M A N A G E R N O T E S Welcome to Home Park for this evening’s Papa John’s Trophy tie with Swindon Town.

Once again, I was really pleased with the way we played and fought on Saturday and to come away with three points against a strong Burton Albion side was really pleasing. Some of the football we played was fantastic and the players followed the game plan we put together really well. The preparation that goes into every matchday is thorough and thought through. We have to be ready for every opponent we

come up against and the work the analysts and coaches do before games is vitally important.

The hard work that goes on behind the scenes and in training is showing during matches and that is very pleasing to see, we have to continue doing it and improving. I would like to extend a welcome to Ben Garner and all the coaches, staff, players and fans of Swindon Town. Ben has done a great job so far this season and we are expecting a tough game tonight. As with all of our

matches, we will be going into this evening’s game wanting to progress in the Papa John’s Trophy. It is a good opportunity for some players to get some minutes, who maybe haven’t had as much as others, but we are respectful of the competition and of the opponents and will be doing all we can to progress.

Whether you are at Home Park or watching or listening on Argyle TV, I hope you enjoy the game. Gaffer.

TROPHY TALES There have been some great nights for Argyle in the EFL Trophy (Papa John’s Trophy) down the years, few better than Freddie Issaka becoming our youngest ever player when he emerged from the bench at the age of just 15 years and 34 days against Newport at the end of August. The Pilgrims enjoyed a morale-boosting night in this competition at Swindon a couple of years ago, when a dominant display gave us a 3-0 win over the Robins. Zak Rudden opened the scoring, Joel Grant added a second and Joe Riley completed the scoring.

Going back to 2017 and a visit from Chelsea U21s resulted in a thrilling night of drama. Callum Hudson-Odoi, he of future England fame, scored twice for the visitors in the second half and Argyle were heading toward a frustrating defeat.

Step forward Alex Fletcher for possibly his finest moment in a Green shirt, pulling a goal back with two minutes on the clock and then securing a superb draw with a sumptuous volley. Argyle then went on to win the penalty shoot-out. Another happy memory

from the Trophy came in 2016, with Newport the visitors to Home Park and a strong Pilgrim side set about dismantling their visitors. Despite trailing at the interval, secondhalf goals from Craig Tanner, Jordan Slew, Jake Jervis and Nauris Bulvitis resulted in a 4-1 triumph.

In a further trawl of the history books (Greens on Screen), the visit of local rivals Exeter City tempted an incredible crowd of almost 10,000 into Home Park. Whatever the competition, a win over Exeter is special, and Argyle delivered.

Played in monsoon conditions, goals from Hiram Boateng and Craig Tanner sent a soggy Green Army home happy and we progressed to the quarter-finals, losing 5-3 at home to Millwall in another entertaining Trophy night.

"HUDSON-ODOI, HE OF FUTURE ENGLAND FAME, SCORED TWICE FOR THE VISITORS IN THE SECOND HALF"

Swindon Town arrive at Home Park tonight with confidence high after a superb response to the disappointment of relegation from Sky Bet League One.

Under the management of Ben Garner, the galvanised Robins started their campaign with a confident 3-1 win at Scunthorpe, recovering from 1-0 down to bag the points with goals from Jack Payne, Ben Gladwin and Harry McKirdy. There was a setback in the form of a narrow loss to Carlisle draw and a goalless draw at home to Tranmere before Payne

scored the only goal in a success at Salford, and Tyreece Simpson repeated the only goal trick at home to Mansfield. A last-minute Payne penalty earned the Robins a point at Stevenage and they opened their Papa John’s Trophy campaign with a 2-1 win over Arsenal U21s, thanks to Mo Dabre and an own goal. League form took a slight downward turn with just two points from three games with Port Vale, Northampton and Colchester, but the Robins have since recovered with two excellent away wins to Westcountry rivals.

First up was Bristol Rovers, when Swindon again recovered from going a goal down and Payne was the man to draw them level on 87 minutes. Three valuable points were secured with a late penalty from Gladwin and a McKirdy strike.

The result on Saturday was arguably their most impressive, travelling to high-flying Forest Green Rovers and producing a top display to win 2-0. McKirdy and Simpson were the scorers in a result that moved Swindon into the automatic promotion places.

PRIDE AND BELIEF

Argyle's rise to the top of the League is attracting national attention... “We are top of the league” boomed around Home Park and, as Ryan Lowe strode on to the pitch and punched the air, the Plymouth Argyle manager was given a mighty roar. “It feels good,” Lowe said after the 2-1 win against Burton Albion that moved Plymouth to the summit of Sky Bet League One. “Whether it’s for a week or a month, at this moment, we’re up there for a reason. NEWPORT COUNTY 2 Telford 57, Abraham 85

ARGYLE 0

Two familiar faces subjected Argyle to a 2-0 defeat in the opening round of the Papa John's Trophy at Newport. A Pilgrim side packed with teenage potential competed well for long periods but were undone by a stunner from Dom Telford just before the hour and Newport confirmed their win with another accomplished finish from Timmy Abraham.

The Pilgrims started with some bright passing football and a Ryan Law pass was only slightly over-hit for Craske in the penalty area. An improved ball from Law found Craske in a similar position on 11 minutes but an untidy Newport challenge earned nothing more than a shake of the head from referee Tom Reeves.

A quiet start to the evening briefly livened with good work from Abraham and a long-distance drive by Robbie Willmott sent rising over Callum Burton’s crossbar. A Newport corner proved more of a problem, as a deep cross found Joe Woodiwiss, who saw his stabbed effort defended by Massey. Newport turned the screw further with a scuttling shot from Abraham saved by Burton and Craske headed clear the loose ball. Argyle responded with a weaving Law run and shot saved by Nick Townsend.

The Greens, bolstered by the opportunity, maintained the impetus with a Pursall effort blocked, followed by Law firing over after a clever corner routine involving skipper Adam Randell and Shirley. Telford took up the mantle with a near-post effort well-fielded by

Burton but Waruih restored Pilgrim momentum with a fine drive sent narrowly wide after a darting run from Jordon Garrick. The half ended with scores level, but only after a rasping Telford strike from 20 yards was fended wide by Burton. Newport made a couple of changes at the interval, introducing Zack Maher and Iestyn Evans for Willmott and Matty Dolan.

The second period started with a cross by James Wilson, back from suspension, finding a determined run by Law and his header was only a fraction wide. Argyle built on that positive moment with a spell of improved temp and territory. Newport snatched back control with a superb goal from Telford, picking up a short throw-in and lashing a left-foot thunderbolt into the top corner from 22 yards. It was a super strike and no chance for Burton.

Evans clearly took inspiration from the goal, spearing a speculative effort from fully 40 yards that needed tipping over. Moments later, Oliver Cooper dragged a shot wide from the left channel. Will Jenkins-Davies, another teenage Pilgrim debutant, came on for Waruih, as the Argyle youngsters looked to find a way back into the game. A fabulous run from Garrick found JenkinsDavies on the right and his cross to Massey was glanced inches wide. Massey was then replaced by Issaka, Argyle’s youngest-ever player by a year, and he was almost celebrating within a minute, as a Shirley header was parried clear by Townsend from a Pursall free-kick.

Carlo Garside for Craske was the final Argyle change but the game was up two minutes later, as Abraham skipped inside and curled a cool finish beyond Burton and into the far corner.
