STEVEN SCHUMACHER Managersnotes
This is the second attempt to play this game, after losing the originally scheduled fixture to the freezing temperatures last week. It really was an exceptionally cold week, and I would like to give a lot of credit to Chris Ralph and his ground staff, who worked incredibly hard to ensure that our Sky Bet League One game against Morecambe on Saturday went ahead.
I’m pleased it did, because we played very well, and got back to winning ways with a 2-1 victory. We had 32 shots during the game, and played some very nice football along the way. We knew we would have to show patience, and we did, but the players stuck to the plan, believed in themselves and kept doing the right things.
The win put us back at the top of the table, which is a nice psychological boost going into Christmas. We have got 47 points so far, with 22 games played. The game at Cheltenham Town on Boxing Day takes us to the halfway point of the season, and it would
be terrific to still be top at that point, with 50 points.
It will be tough; Cheltenham are very good at home, but with another sold-out away end, we’ll be doing everything we can to get the three points.
Tonight, we have the opportunity to advance to the last eight of a competition, which is always a good thing, and something we are excited about. We know that a win would give us a quarter final against Bristol Rovers, who we have already had a lively game against this season. However, we are not overlooking Wimbledon, who are in very good form, having lost just one of their last 13 games in all competitions. This will be a tough game.
We welcome manager Johnnie Jackson and his staff, as well as the players, officials and fans of Wimbledon.
Enjoy the game.
All the best, Steven
Good evening, everyone, and welcome to Home Park for tonight’s Papa Johns Trophy game against AFC Wimbledon.
TROPHY TALES
An Argyle side packed with youth and homegrown talent surged from behind to book their place in the Papa Johns Trophy round of 16 with a 3-2 victory over Charlton Athletic.
Having gone a goal down early on courtesy of a Daniel Kanu effort, Argyle powered to a 3-1 with goals from Sam Cosgrove, Niall Ennis and 17-year-old Caleb Roberts, who entered the history books as the Pilgrims' fifth-youngest competitive scorer, as well as grabbing the winner.
Substitute Karoy Anderson fired home a consolation in added time for the Addicks, but the result rarely looked in doubt following Roberts' effort early in the second half.
Midfielder Adam Randell captained a starting XI containing six products of the Pilgrims’ Academy, but summer signing Mickel Miller was perhaps the most notable inclusion, making his first competitive start at wing-back after an injury interrupted start to life in Green.
The Green Army in attendance were offered a swift introduction to the former Rotherham man’s abilities inside the opening minute, as Miller danced down wing in front of the Lyndhurst Road Stand and generated two crossing opportunities – the first blocked low, and the second whipped narrowly over goalkeeper Nathan Harness’ crossbar.
At the other end, Charlton offered pacey outlets of their own. First, Tyreece Campbell broke down the left and flashed an effort over Callum Burton’s crossbar.
The Greens did not heed the warning, and Daniel Kanu capitalised on some loose play at the back to pick Oscar Halls’ pocket inside the penalty area and bear down on goal. Kanu’s first attempt, low to the far post, was brilliantly saved by Burton, but the rebound fell kindly to the 18-yearold, who gratefully tucked it away.
The Greens’ senior statesmen immediately set about helping the youngsters back on their feet. A lovely interchange between Bali Mumba and Ennis saw the latter lay a perfectly timed pass for Cosgrove into the right channel, and the striker took a touch before firing emphatically across Harness and into the far corner.
Just two minutes later, it was Charlton’s turn to cough up the ball in a dangerous area. Under pressure Cosgrove and with his back to goal, Addicks apprentice Zach Mitchell mistakenly laid the ball to Ennis lurking unmarked yards from goal.
Seven minutes after his side fell behind, the striker fired Argyle in front, sidestepping the desperate dive of Harness before firing past a lunging defender on the goalline.
Both sides looked far more confident in possession of the ball, and Campbell did his best to single-handedly haul the Addicks back on terms on 20 minutes, spinning away down the left flank before cutting inside and firing at goal from the angle, but Burton was again on his toes to make a smart save with his legs.
Chances were flowing in an extremely open encounter,
and Argyle really could have had three or four before the game was half an hour old.
Midfield starlet Roberts drilled cleanly to the near post from the edge of the area to draw a good stop from Harness, before another engine room talent, Will Jenkins Davies, was presented with a chance inside the box after another defensive mishap. Similar opportunities followed for the lively duo of Cosgrove and Ennis to add to their tallies, but lastditch blocks kept Charlton in the tie.
tender years to win the ball and hook beyond Harness at the Devonport End.
After a host of opportunities in the first half, Roberts’ strike took the competitive edge out of the fixture somewhat, and the following period was notably more subdued. The majority of the action occurred in Steven Schumacher’s technical area, seeing Mumba, Ennis, Cosgrove and Randell replaced by Joe Edwards, Ryan Hardie, Freddie Issaka and Morgan Whittaker.
The Greens enjoyed the majority of the play in the first half, but the direct threat of Charlton’s pacey forwards kept Argyle’s youthful defensive trio on their toes. A ball over the top sent goalscorer Kanu racing behind, but Burton once again evidenced his credentials with a brave stop at the striker’s feet.
On the stroke of half timewith the final touch of the opening 45 minutes - Ennis headed over from six yards with Harness unsighted after a brilliant clipped cross from Jenkins Davies.
Within a minute of the second half, a third arrived – and it was 17-year-old Roberts who gleefully opened his professional account. Yet another loose defensive pass placed the Charlton defence under pressure on the edge of the area, and Roberts showed both strength and composure beyond his
The next attempt on goal came on 78 minutes, and it was spectacular. Addicks right back Nathaniel Asiimwe took aim from all of 30 yards with a rocket that seemed destined for the top corner until Burton, voted Man of the Match by sponsors Influence Planning for a reason, leapt to claw the ball wide with another top class save.
Not to be outdone by his contemporary, another Argyle history maker –youngest ever first-team appearance maker Issaka – broke clear to go oneon-one with Harness, but he would have to wait another day to join Roberts in the archives as an Argyle goalscorer.
In the end, it was the Addicks' substitute, Karoy Anderson, who would take his chance, keeping composure to spring the offside trap and fire under Burton in stoppage time.
"Roberts showed both strength and composure beyond his tender years to win the ball and hook beyond Harness at the Devonport End"
AFC WIMBLEDON
AFC Wimbledon arrive at Home Park tonight on the back of a battling 0-0 draw at Swindon Town the weekend before last, a result that kept Johnnie Jackson’s men in mid-table of Sky Bet League Two.
After the frustration of relegation last season, the Dons settled back into the fourth tier with a 2-0 defeat of Gillingham on the opening day, Ethan Chislett and Jack Currie scoring the goals, but they then suffered a sticky spell before securing their next win, 2-0 at Crawley.
Paul Kalambayi and Josh Davison earned a 2-1 win over Aston Villa U21s in the first Trophy outing of the campaign but that was followed by three successive defeats in the league.
It was the Trophy that got them back on form, Kyle Hudlin, Ayoub Assal and Kwaku Frimpong hitting the net in a 3-2 victory over Crawley.
The Dons found some form in the Autumn, beating the likes of Rochdale, Harrogate and, best of all, high-flying Leyton Orient on a great night at Plough Lane. That win came in the middle of a ten-match unbeaten run that only ended with an FA Cup exit at the hands of Chesterfield.
Wimbledon booked their place in the last 16 of the Trophy with a 1-0 triumph over Sutton United, Hudlin scoring the decisive goal.
PILGRIMS DONS &
Over the past 11 seasons, Argyle and AFC Wimbledon have enjoyed some proper ding-dong battles, with both clubs tasting victory and defeat.
Our first ever meeting with the new AFC Wimbledon came in August 2011, a time when the Greens were still battling the trauma of administration, and the Dons waltzed away from Home Park with a 2-0 victory.
The Dons managed to win on their next two
visits to Home Park but Argyle were also recording victories on their away trips to London. Onismor Bhasera and Nick Chadwick in a 2-1 win in 2012, while Gregg Wylde and Graham Carey hit the net in a 2-0 triumph at the start of the 2015-16 season.
A few weeks later, we met again in the Trophy and a super game also went the way of the Pilgrims, as Jake Jervis, Ryan Brunt and Carl McHugh struck in a 3-2 victory.
Unfortunately, the Dons had the final say that season, beating the Greens in the play-off final at Wembley.
The last few meetings at Home Park have been in favour of Argyle, including a 4-2 in February 2018, when Carey, David Fox, Ruben Lameiras and Ryan Taylor notched. Two more Ryans, Hardie and Broom, scored in the 2-0 win from Wimbledon’s last visit in March.
EVERGREEN BE THE DIFFERENCE
EVERGREEN BE THE DIFFERENCE
New Evergreen Membership Scheme Announced
We are delighted to announce the launch of our brand-new and exciting Argyle membership scheme, the Evergreen Fans Fund.
Evergreen is a subscription Fans Fund that provides the Green Army with a full range of fantastic Argyle benefits, while supporting football operations at Home Park. Evergreen members can be the difference in our future success.
The spiritual successor to the outgoing Big Green Lottery scheme, Evergreen puts the Green Army in control of where they’d like their membership subscription to be spent – with options including First Team Operations, the Argyle Academy, and the club’s Sports Science department.
For those who would like to support more than one department, Evergreen members can split their subscription evenly across two or more areas.
The Evergreen Fans Fund was borne from supporters’ feedback towards the end of the Big Green Lottery life-cycle, with 88% of fans stating that their main motivation for subscribing to a scheme was to support the Academy, while 71% also said that they would like to receive ticket discounts/benefits as part of their membership.
With Evergreen, we can achieve both of these aims.
With a range of affordable monthly subscriptions available, Evergreen members will contribute significantly to revenue generation at Argyle, enabling us to press forward in our pursuit of becoming a sustainable Championship club.
In return, Evergreen members gain access to our best-ever range of member benefits, including replica kits with a unique Evergreen insignia, an Evergreen welcome pack, invitations to exclusive
events, prize draws, an Evergreen only open training session, and large discounts on Argyle season tickets, Argyle TV subscriptions, and items from the Argyle Superstore.
Of course, we know that the reach of the global Green Army stretches far and wide, which is why we have also implemented an international membership option, weighting the benefits more practically for overseas supporters, with a greater discount on Argyle TV subscriptions, for example.
The Evergreen Fans Fund scheme already has the backing of Chairman and majority shareholder Simon Hallett, Argyle manager Steven Schumacher, and a long list of high-profile Argyle fans and lifelong members of the Green Army, including Ken Beale from the 50/50 Lottery, Ian Newell from PASOTI, and Argyle Legends’ chief Paul Hart.
Meanwhile, Argyle captain Joe Edwards, alongside Michael Cooper and Adam Randell – graduates of the Argyle Academy which stands to benefit greatly from Evergreen - have signed up to become Fans Fund Ambassadors.
Speaking on the launch of the scheme Argyle Chief Executive Officer Andrew Parkinson said: “We are delighted to be able to launch our new membership scheme today.
“Evergreen provides a great opportunity for our supporters to have a clear voice on how their membership is used to boost the club’s progress, and receive brilliant benefits and experiences in return. Having requested, and received, detailed feedback from supporters on how they would like a membership scheme to operate, we are confident that Evergreen will be a success for both the club and the Green Army.
“The launch of Evergreen is another step forward in our ambitions to become a sustainable Championship club. Your
membership can be the difference in achieving that goal.”
For more information on the packages available, and the raft of benefits associated with becoming an Evergreen member, visit the dedicated Evergreen microsite on www.pafc.co.uk
Evergreen memberships are available now and the different packages include: Premium, Standard, International Premium, International Digital, U18, U12, U8.
The club has recruited a dedicated supporter engagement team to help the Green Army make the most of their Evergreen membership, and provide weekly updates to supporters on the progress of the scheme.
Supporters can sign up anytime online, by calling 01752 302208, or by visiting the brand-new Evergreen Suite adjacent to the Superstore, where our dedicated supporter engagement team will be delighted to guide you through the membership process.

DESIGN & BRANDING
Argyle's Under-18 squad's tireless efforts went in vain as the Young Pilgrims were beaten 1-0 by Gillingham in the second round of the FA Youth Cup at MEMS Prestfield Stadium.
A late penalty from Joe Gbode was all that divided the sides, with Gillingham converting the spot kick in the 78th minute of the tie.
Throughout the first half, Gillingham had the better chances, but the game remained quite even, and it would come
ACADEMY ACADEMY ARGYLE GILLINGHAM 1 ARGYLE 0
down to one error to determine who would score first.
Will Jenkins Davies frequently tested the Gills defence while skipper Oscar Halls made a terrific block to deny the home side an opening goal.
Argyle replied by forcing consecutive corners before a great save from Zak Baker and Halls’ intervention from the follow-up kept the scoreline level.
Perhaps the best Argyle chance came for Joe
Hatch towards the end of the half, but he slipped at a vital time and the opportunity evaporated.
Argyle began the second period brightly, testing home goalkeeper Taite Holtam with efforts from Freddie Issaka and Jack Endacott.
With just over ten minutes remaining, Ronald Sithole was brought down in the area and Gdode, who played for Gillingham’s first team on the Saturday, scored the penalty.
Argyle surged forward in the closing minutes, but Gillingham held on to see the game out and reach the third round.
