M A N A G E R N O T E S Good evening and welcome to Home Park for this evening’s Papa John’s Cup tie with Arsenal.

I have to start off by thanking you all for the support on Saturday. It was one of the best atmospheres we have witnessed since we’ve been at the

club and made for an amazing day.

We have a busy week with an important Emirates FA Cup tie with Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday. That means that this evening will be an opportunity to give some players who

haven’t had as many minutes as others the chance to play and show us what they can do.

I would like to welcome all the staff, players and fans from Arsenal, they have one of the best youth academies in Europe and it will be a test for us tonight.

I am expecting an entertaining game and whether you are inside Home Park or watching back home, on Argyle TV, I hope you enjoy the game. Gaffer

TROPHY TALES Papa John’s Trophy Group Stage

Leading the pack in Group A of the Southern section, West Ham United Under-21s sit level on three points with Gillingham. Meanwhile, Ipswich Town and Colchester United are yet to get off the mark in the competition. In Group B, Sutton United secured their first victory of the season in all competitions against Crystal Palace Under21s, to mark the EFL newcomers’ entry into the Papa John’s Trophy. Goal difference alone now separates Sutton and second placed AFC Wimbledon, who

defeated Portsmouth Finalists in two of the last three seasons - in their opening fixture. Second in Southern Group C and third in the League One standings, Milton Keynes Dons sit level on points with Aston Villa Under-21s, who sit at the summit of the standings. Burton Albion and Wycombe Wanderers inhabit the third and second spots respectively.

Fine margins separate Group D, with Walsall positioned at the summit of the standings. Northampton Town follow closely behind on two points, with Forest Green Rovers registering

a point and Brighton and Hove Albion Under-21s at the foot of the table. Matt Jay’s late leveller rescued a point for Exeter City against Chelsea Under-21s, with Bristol Rovers putting aside their lacklustre League form and riding high in Group E, in the wake of a 2-0 win over Cheltenham Town. As is the story so far in Group F, Swindon Town’s hard-fought victory over Arsenal Under-21s was deserving of all three points, but Newport County claimed the top spot with a triumph over Plymouth Argyle. Group G is heating up, as cross-city London

rivals Charlton Athletic and Leyton Orient dominate the Papa John’s Trophy standings. The Addicks provided the entertainment factor in a seven-goal thriller with Crawley Town, which saw Charlton come out on top 6-1 against John Yems’ men. Cambridge United doubled their points tally at the top of Group H, following up a 4-1 win over Oxford United in August. Sam Smith’s strike was enough to see off second placed Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s, who beat Stevenage last month.

ARSENAL IN THE TROPHY Arsenal U21s began their journey in this season’s Papa John’s Trophy with a trip to Swindon Town and it ended with a narrow 2-1 defeat.

Mo Dabre bundling the ball over the line for his first goal for the Robins.

Despite the setback, Arsenal began to grow in confidence and deservedly equalised with a superb strike from Joel Idaho, rifling a fine finish into the bottom Arsenal responded with Mika corner on 33 minutes. Biereth displaying sublime Swindon, however, would control to bring down a pass not be denied, and claimed from Charlie Patino before the points with a headed lashing a ferocious drive that thundered away off the post. goal from substitute Dion Conroy, glancing the ball into the Arsenal net midway Swindon pounced on the reprieve to grab a lead, through the second half. The Robins started brightly, with an Alex Gilbert almost converted on the rebound by Jayden Mitchell-Lawson.

The Gunners recovered from that setback with an enthralling 4-3 success at Newport County in October.

Jordan Greenidge opened the scoring to give County the lead but goals from Omari Hutchinson and Salah Oulad M'Hand put Arsenal 2-1 up.

Two goals in the space of six minutes from first Timmy Abraham and then Alex Fisher turned the game back around in County's favour though but Arsenal roared back to win it late on.

James Olayinka made it 3-3 in the 87th minute and Charles Sagoe Jr got Arsenal all three points in second-half stoppage time.

It all means that Arsenal need a win at Home Park and will be hoping Newport slip up against Swindon to progress to the next round.

WILSON FEELS THERE'S MORE TO COME James Wilson believes that Argyle are only going to get stronger this season and has credited the determination within the changing room. Speaking ahead of Saturday’s Sky Bet League One fixture with Ipswich Town at Home Park, the former Blues defender explained that the players are still wanting to improve on the performances they have already put in this season. He said, “We’ve got to keep it up, we have a point to prove after last week. We are going to need that determination throughout the season. “We have the bit between our teeth this weekend definitely.

“It’s a great atmosphere, it always is when you’re winning and doing well. We just have to keep our feet on the ground. “The changing room is full of really good boys, and everyone is really grounded.”

James, a former Wales international, spent two seasons at Portman Road and won the club’s Player of the Season award last time out.

He also played in Ipswich’s 1-0 win over Argyle in Suffolk in March and remembers his time their fondly. He said, “I did really enjoy playing there. The first year was great with the fans even though we didn’t achieve what we wanted to. “There has been a massive change there, I don’t know a lot of the boys now even from last season.

“Its’ like any other game, there are plenty of other teams that I have played for before.”

James has been a big part of the excellent run alongside fellow new signings Jordan Houghton, Dan Scarr, Brendan Galloway and Macaulay Gillesphey, but was quick to credit the coaching for the way they have been performing. He said, “That is all down to the staff and the way they set us up. Everyone knows their jobs and it makes playing so much easier. “We have James Bolton coming back as well, so we are only going to be stronger as the season goes on.”

MATCH REPORT ARGYLE 1 Agard 24

SWINDON TOWN 3 Gillesphey o.g. 20 Mitchell-Lawson 74 McKirdy 84

Argyle fell to a second defeat in the Papa John’s Trophy after two late goals from a speedy Swindon earned the Robins a 3-1 win. A first goal in Green for Kieran Agard had levelled a Macaulay Gillesphey own goal in the first half and the Pilgrims created plenty of opportunities to move ahead, but Swindon won it through strikes from Jayden Mitchell-Lawson and Harry McKirdy. A wonderful pass from Danny Mayor created the first chance, headed in at the far post by Rhys Shirley, but the offside flag went against the Greens in a very tight call. The Robins responded with a skidding drive from distance by Ryan East, palmed clear by Callum Burton. A super interception from Gillesphey was just enough to divert a threaded pass to Harry Parsons, who was unable to clip the loose ball beyond Burton, as the Robins enjoyed a bright spell in the game.

The reward arrived on 20 minutes when a fizzing cross from Parsons cannoned into Gillesphey at the near post and there was little he could do to prevent the ball ricocheting into the Argyle net. A surge from Joe Edwards prompted the ideal reply, feeding the ball wide to Gillesphey, who made instant amends with a curling cross to the near post for

Agard to prod out an instinctive boot and the effort squeezed past Swindon ‘keeper Lewis Ward. Mayor was enjoying his evening, completing the first half with a delightful cross that caused panic in the visiting defence, with Panutche Camara lurking dangerously. The Mayor masterclass came to an end at half-time, with trainee Will Jenkins-Davies his replacement.

Jordon Garrick replaced Agard midway through the second period and, with three Swindon changes, the game had become a little disjointed. The Robins were first to find some renewed impetus, snatching the lead with a swift break from an Argyle corner and Mitchell-Lawson kept his composure to slot past Burton from the right channel.

Ryan Hardie replaced Shirley for the closing minutes but everyone inside Home Park was soon gasping at an outrageous curling effort from distance by McKirdy that struck the post.

McKirdy had better luck moments later, sealing the Swindon win with a close-range finish following a surge through the middle from Rom Critchlow.
