More than ever, football is a squad game, as evidenced increasingly because we can now use five substitutes in a match. To have a successful season, you need to use your squad effectively over a period of 50-60 games. We may also include some of our younger players in the squad to give them some more exposure to first-team football, let them see what it is all about, and help further their football education. Thank you all once again for your continued excellent support. We all – players, staff, myself –appreciate it greatly. Enjoy the game.
The good thing is that we dug deep and ground out a result. You don’t always get your own way in football, sometimes you have to find a way to win. We defended our box very well, putting in blocks where we needed to, and of course one excellent save from Mike Cooper at a very important stage of the game. At the other end, two moments of quality from Niall Ennis and Ryan Hardie meant the three points were ours. Turning our attention to tonight, and our first Papa John’s Trophy game of the season. Momentum is such an important thing in football, and the key is to try to keep it going when you have it. We have won two consecutive games in the league, and although we may make some changes to the team tonight, winning is a mentality that we want through the entire squad, the entire football club. We will make a few changes because some players need some minutes, they need to play. Others need to be managed so that they we keep them at their peak physical levels.
All the Steven.best, Good evening, everyone, and welcome to Home Park for tonight’s Papa John’s Trophy game against Bristol Rovers.
STEVEN SCHUMACHER
We welcome manager Joey Barton and his staff, as well as the players, officials and fans of Rovers. It was very pleasing to get another win on Saturday, at home against Bolton Wanderers. That is three wins from three in the league, with three clean sheets. We could not have asked for a better set of home results so far in Sky Bet League One. We were not really at our best against Bolton. It was a case of winning ugly, really. We did not use the ball as well as we can, especially in the first half, although we did improve as the game went on.

TROPHY TALES
On the surface of just looking at results, the Papa John’s Trophy last season was a tough competition for the Greens but, digging a little deeper, it also provided the platform for a new wave of talent to get their first taste of senior football. Argyle travelled to Newport for the opening encounter and it was a team packed with youngsters, including Academy prospects Brandon Pursall, Finley Craske, Angel Waruih, Rhys Shirley and Oscar Massey, plus 15 year-old Freddie Issaka on the bench.
Burton to keep out a late Arsenal onslaught, the game went straight to penalties. After four spot kicks scored from the opening five penalties it went to sudden death, Burton saved from Oyalinka to give Shirley the chance to win it, he did and the Greens got the extra point.
Ryan Law forced a decent block from the home goalkeeper and then fired narrowly over as a tight first period ended goalless. Law continued to be a threat after the break, providing the cross for James Wilson to head inches wide. The momentum changed in favour of Newport when former Pilgrim Dom Telford lashed a tremendous strike into the top corner just before the hour.

This competition has been a tough one for Argyle in recent times and last year went the way of others before it. But it was not without success, six Argyle debuts were handed out last season, and that opportunity for future talent to shine might just come again this evening.
A surge from Joe Edwards prompted the ideal reply, feeding the ball wide to Gillesphey, who made instant amends with a curling cross to the near post for Kieran Agard to prod out an instinctive boot and the effort squeezed past Swindon ‘keeper Lewis Ward. Danny Mayor was in the side as part of his recovery from injury and he mesmerised the Swindon defence for much of the first half, eventually coming off at the break to be replaced

It has been a steady return to life in the third tier for Bristol Rovers at the start of this season.
Ryan Loft scored a lovely goal for Rovers on the weekend but they were pegged back 11 minutes from time, former Exeter and Torquay striker Ryan Bowman earning the Shrews a point. The season started for Rovers with a last-minute goal giving Forest Green Rovers a victory at the Memorial Stadium but the Gas responded with a brilliant 4-0 win at ten-man Burton Albion.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury Town kept the Pirates safely in midtable of Sky Bet League One and manager Joey Barton can be relatively satisfied with the adjustment his side have made over the opening weeks.
Anthony Evans, James Connolly and Aaron Collins (2) scored the goals, all of which came in the first half at the Pirelli. Despite bowing out of the Carabao Cup at Crawley Town, Rovers returned to league action with an excellent 1-0 win at home to a dangerous Oxford United, John Marquis scoring the only goal. This was followed by a tough midweek trip to Barnsley, where Rovers went down to a 3-0 defeat, but they put up a fine showing at in-form Portsmouth. Collins looked to have earned Barton’s men a point before Pompey pinched it with two late Aftergoals.tonight’s Trophy challenge, Rovers host Morecambe on the weekend and Argyle travel to the Mem for our league fixture on Saturday, 22 October.
THE ROVERS SEASON
9 Tonight’s game takes the grand total to 149 competitive fixtures, we have two more games scheduled in the league this season and the FA Cup might just throw us together again. Over the past 148 meetings, Argyle have the edge with 61 wins against 45 for the Pirates, and the goal difference is 236/200 in the Pilgrims favour. Niall Ennis scored both goals in our last meeting, a 2-0 triumph for the Greens in March 2021, while our previous clash in the Trophy was back in September 2019. On that night at Home Park, a rare slip from Argyle goalkeeper Alex Palmer allowed Tom Nichols to volley home the opening goal from close-range but the Greens responded. Antoni Sarcevic struck a super effort against the post and Byron Moore was in the right place to convert the Bothrebound.sidestraded chances after the break and George Cooper very nearly won it for the Greens in normal time, but the game was ultimately decided by a penalty shoot-out. Argyle kept their nerve, scoring all five spot-kicks to bag the bonus point. We have to go back 21 years for the next Trophy meeting between our two clubs, when the competition was sponsored by LDV Vans. The game was played at the Memorial Stadium and despite fielding some great Green names like Romain Larrieu, Paul Wotton, Brian McGlinchey and Ian Stonebridge, we went down to a 3-0 Chapterdefeat.149 will no doubt provide more thrills and spills. A fourth goal for The Pilgrims arrived on 18 minutes when Joe Hatch was brought down in area and he picked himself up to convert the Jenkins-Daviespenalty.came close to taking his personal tally to four as his free kick smashed against the crossbar before, near the halfhour mark, Swindon had their first real effort, with a header from a corner travelling over the bar. Their best chance came a minute before the break a Swindon striker appeared to be clear on goal, but a combination of goalkeeper Zak Baker and Halls ensured that Argyle went in at the interval with a clean sheet. Argyle required just a minute of the second half to make it 5-0 with Jenkins-Davies this time scoring from the penalty spot.
The young Pilgrims did not ease their pressure on the home side, winning a third penalty, on 55 minutes, with Hatch again the man felled. Once again, he converted from 12 yards. The rout was completed four minutes from time when skipper Halls met a corner at the far post with a controlled right-foot effort from four yards. Argyle: Zak Baker, Lewis Colwell, Cole Gibbings, Jeffrey Forkuo, Oscar Halls, Jack Matthews, Caleb Roberts (Kieran Edworthy 78), Will Jenkins-Davies, Joe Hatch (Henry Donovan 56), Freddie Issaka, Finley Wilkes (Harley Sneap 56). The win is Argyle's fourth from just six league games this season - all of them coming with clean sheets - and keeps within striking distance of the early pace setters in Sky Bet League One.

Argyle had not yet conceded a goal in Sky Bet League One football at Home Park before the visit of the Trotters, and from the off, Bolton looked as though they’d pose a stiff challenge to that record.
The direct pace and power of forward Dion Charles looked to stretch the Greens’ back-line, picking up from deep and driving at the defence in the opening exchanges. On the first such occasion, the former Accrington Stanley man saw his pull-back cleared by Dan Scarr, and on the second he took a tumble into the box, but referee Will Finnie waved away the suggestion that there had been any contact from an Argyle leg.
Niall Ennis gave Argyle the lead in the first half by exhibiting a combination of diligent forward craft and smart thinking to get beyond Wanderers skipper

have been in front, too, but for a superb sliding block from Bali Mumba to deny Kieran Lee from 15 yards. Within a minute, at the other end, Mumba was denied by a block of Bolton’s own after good work from Danny Mayor. Mayor himself was growing into the game, enjoying the precious commodity of space afforded to him by this season’s 3-4-3 system. Collecting a Joe Edwards pass 30 yards from goal, the Pilgrims’ no.10 glided into the box and powered a low effort low to the left, but Trafford got down smartly to beat the fierce drive away. Having lost possession in dangerous territory and passed up opportunities to clear, the Greens were outnumbered as a low cross made its way into the box. Unmarked, 10 yards out, substitute Amadou Bakayoko struck goalwards, but Cooper changed direction with remarkable agility to kick the ball onto the post.
It proved to be Bolton’s last chance of a reprieve. With the minutes ticking down, Whittaker broke through an ailing Wanderers midfield to feed Hardie in space, and the Scottish striker fired emphatically beyond Trafford to secure the points in front of a gleeful Devonport End.

“I think we started well, but didn’t really get a foothold in the game in the first half. Both teams were stopping each other playing out, so it was a fairly direct game. Niall’s endeavour on a through ball to get on the end of it and make something happen was a huge boost.
Argyle were winning 1-0 at home to Bolton on Saturday when it looked certain that Wanderers were about to level the scores. There were just over 10 minutes remaining when Amadou Bakayoko received a low cross and when he shot goalwards, probably he thought he had scored an equalising goal.
However, goalkeeperArgyleMike Cooper produced a breath-taking save, reacting immensely quickly to thrust out a leg to deflect the ball onto the frame of the goal. Bakayoko tried to follow up, but quick defending by Brendan Galloway shielded the ball out for a Ninecorner.minutes
movement around the goal. Daz identifies things that the other team does, so thought that kind of cutback is something they might have. I was half ready for it as soon as he squared it. Luckily it came off the post and then Brendan was there to follow up. That’s when you need your defenders.

later, Ryan Hardie latched on to a Morgan Whittaker pass to lash home a second goal to add to Niall Ennis’s first-half opener.
After the game, Mike spoke to Argyle TV, and talked us through the processes of making his save, including how he and goalkeeping coach Darren Behcet had prepared for this exact eventuality.
