THE LOWEDOWN

OUR win Stevenage on Saturday was a great result for us. It is always a tough place to go and Stevenage are fighting for their lives. The strong character that the lads showed throughout the game was very pleasing for me. We had to earn the right to play and I felt that, once we scored the first goal, we were always in the ascendency. Then we had to deal with the floodlight failure, which I felt was a bit of a shambles, and we showed great character, again, to get straight back on to the front foot after that. I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all the travelling fans, who got behind us in their great numbers again. It was a special moment for me and the players, when we arrived at the ground before kick-off and got off the team coach. There were 50-100 people waiting for the lads, and for me and my staff, calling and shouting ‘Green Army’. I felt really warmed by it because they had obviously got to the ground a lot earlier just to wait for us to get off the coach.

We have now got two tough home games coming up, starting with Crawley tonight. As usual, we will be taking nothing for granted. Crawley are in decent form and have got some really good players. However, we will stick to our plan, as we always do, and play our football.

AMERICAN EYE

Nearly 400 years ago, the original Pilgrims embarked on an overseas tour that saw a massive result for the world. In celebration of the city of Plymouth’s historical ties with the United States of America, we look at some football connections between the club and the country.

BY MEGAN STONE WE find our next American-Argyle connection through Fred Binney, who was born and bred in Plymouth and played for Argyle from 1977-1980. This is how his career panned out. Frederick Edward Binney was born in 1946, in Plymouth, and played for South Western League side, Launceston, where he spent his junior career being a profusive goalscorer. He then became an apprentice at Devonport Dockyard and was spotted out by Don Mills, who was acting as a scout for Torquay United. Fred began his professional career for the Gulls in 1966 and was a regular scorer for Torquay’s reserve side. He was given his debut for the first team the following year, but he was unable to secure a place in the side regularly, so he was sent out on loan to Exeter City in February 1969. Following a successful loan spell with the Grecians, making 17 appearances and scoring 11 goals, Fred moved to the club permanently for a fee of £35,000. He spent four seasons at St James Park, during which he made a total of 177 league appearances and bagged 90 goals. It was the following season that Fred was noticed by higher-level club Brighton & Hove Albion and moved to the club for a fee of £25,000 with two of their players

moving to Exeter in return - John Templeman and Lammie Robertson. He stayed with the Seagulls until 1977 and scored a total of 35 goals in his 70 appearances. The end of his time at Brighton saw a massive move in Fred’s career when he moved over to the United States and to play for St Louis Stars in the North American Soccer League. Nine goals in 18 games followed before he joined Argyle. In Fred’s first season at his hometown club, he struggled, as did the rest of the team. There was a battle against relegation and initially Binney was unable to hold a regular place in the first team. The next season saw a massive turn around in Binney’s luck, bagging 28 goals and winning the Player of the Year award. When the new manager Bobby Saxton came in the following year, Binney was suddenly out of favour as he was not fitting in with the plan and the style of play. In January 1980, after netting 42 goals in 81 appearances for the Pilgrims, he was transferred to Hereford United for £37,000. Binney finished his playing career with Hereford, making 27 appearances for the Bulls, and he went on to qualify as a coach at the club and was then appointed assistant manager to Frank Lord. When Lord left for Malaysia, Binney followed suit and went with him as a coach before returning to former club Exeter City, where he became assistant manager. In 1987, when the Grecians’ manager Colin Appleton departed from St James Park, Binney became Recreation Officer at Plymouth University. He later became president and coach of the University of Plymouth football club, where he remains today.

Review Swindon Town extended their lead at the top of Sky Bet League Two on Saturday thanks to a 3-0 win over Port Vale. Starting the day ahead of Exeter City on goal difference, a 20-minute blitz of goals from Leon Legge, Hallam Hope and Michael Doughty either side of the break put them two points clear at the top, and six ahead of Ryan Lowe’s thirdplaced Pilgrims who have played two matches fewer. Exeter City remain Swindon’s challengers despite a drab goalless home draw against Colchester United, with our neighbours extending their unbeaten run to 11 League Two games to be four points ahead of us having played a game more. Colchester's point – their ninth draw in an unbeaten 15-game sequence – was enough to move them up to fifth in the table. Crewe Alexandra, who were held to a 2-2 draw at Scunthorpe United, are seven points off the leaders in fourth place. After trailing to Jacob Bedeau's 15th-minute header for the hosts, goals from Daniel Powell and Chuma Anene turned the game on its head, only for Kevin Van Veen to curl in an equaliser with 16 minutes to go. With Argyle consigning Stevenage to bottom spot, Morecambe, who started the day bottom, drew 1-1 with Cambridge United to leapfrog Boro. Adam Phillips put the Shrimps ahead in the first half but Harvey Knibbs levelled with 22 minutes left on the clock.

Macclesfield Town pulled themselves away from danger despite going down to 10 men against play-off hopefuls Forest Green Rovers. Carl Winchester’s 18th-minute effort had the away side ahead until the 75th minute when Joe Ironside levelled. Corey O’Keeffe saw red for Town five minutes later for hacking down Josh March but Arthur Gnahoua looped in a superb strike to give the hosts an unlikely win. Carlisle United eased their relegation fears with their first home win since November against Walsall. Left-back Nick Anderton marked his debut with a goal to put Carlisle ahead before their lead was doubled through Ryan Loft's header, with the ball going in off Liam Roberts. Mat Sadler pulled one back for the Saddlers but Chris Beech's team held on for the 2-1 triumph. Tonight’s visitors Crawley Town and Grimsby Town split five goals at the People’s Pension Stadium, as the visitors left empty-handed. Two goals from Ollie Palmer and another by Ashley Nadesan gave Crawley the points. First-half goals from Elliott Whitehouse and James Hanson had seen the visitors come from behind to lead after 32 minutes but Palmer completed his brace in the 70th minute before teeing up Nadesan for the winner with 13 minutes left. Strikes from Danny Rose, Nicky Maynard and Andy Cook saw Mansfield Town brush aside Bradford City 3-0 at Field Mill. Leyton Orient ended a six-game winless run as all the goals in their 2-1 victory over Newport County came in the last 15 minutes. Ryan Haynes put in his own net from James Brophy’s corner with nine minutes remaining before Ruel Sotiriou sealed victory shortly after. Ex-Pilgrim Jamille Matt headed home a stoppage time consolation for the Exiles.

ANDREW PARKINSON CHIEF EXECUTIVE GOOD afternoon to everyone ahead of this evening’s EFL fixture against Crawley Town. We would like to welcome all of you to Home Park, including the officials and visiting fans who have travelled across the country from Sussex. Whilst our last fixture away to Stevenage followed the very recent home game against that club played just after Christmas, you have to go back to September, on another Tuesday evening, to when we played Crawley Town away. This was only our ninth game of the season and it turned out to be a very exciting 2-2 draw after a late penalty equaliser from our visitors this evening. The result left us in 12th position in the league at this point early in the season. It had already been clear in these very early stages that we would be a team that would be playing attacking and attractive football both home and away. Of course, though, we also knew that this style and the expectations of the team would take time to gel and that we would experience some ups and downs along the course of the season. Looking back now as we go into our 28th EFL game of the season, one can see how things do indeed take time to settle down and to gain some sort of consistency. After the first third of the season, some were questioning our defensive capabilities; following several commanding performances at the back, focus then turned to whether, in fact, it was in the striking department that we needed to bolster. Statistics, too, can then be too heavily focussed on the last few games and, indeed, lend weight to what perhaps may be an already held opinion about a strength or weakness that may not have foundation. At Argyle, we are focussing on establishing an identity and style of play that will bring both excitement to supporters and long terms success and the underlining performance areas associated with this are the priority. Every game is different in approach to some extent but, as Ryan has said many times, it is concentrating on what we need to do which is key. Forming this identity under the leadership of

Neil Dewsnip is something that we are looking to replicate right across the age-groups at Argyle, from the early ages at the Academy through to the first team: a way of playing that is easily recognised as Argyle is something that will become a road-map for our future. The recent Under-23’s 3-1 victory against Watford was tremendous and underlines the approach that is being taken: four senior players with seven younger players in this team allows a blend and style to be consistent. At the same time, the younger players are gaining experience in local non-league football, ensuring that they are gaining valuable game time. It was great to be able to see Luke Jephcott slot in to the first team, having had this experience and knowing the expectations that the manager would have of him. The Academy is and will be a key element of providing future success for Argyle, both on and off the pitch. Whilst the first team represents the pinnacle, we also recognise that the majority who go to the Academy will not make it all the way through and so it is also about providing those who go through our Academy an education and life skills, too. This forms part of our Vision and Values as a club. We would like to be able to say that, however long somebody was with us at the club, that it was of benefit in some way to them on their journey. This requires a really well-rounded proposition in every aspect of the club and is very much part of our future thinking. On a practical side, we also need to provide the best facilities that we can. At present, the Academy operates over several sites, in Plymouth and outside the city. Over the course of the next few years, we want to be able to get to a more simplified facility provision improving both logistics and coaching time, as groups and one on one. With all these developments, we really will see an identity shine through at all age-groups and provide a platform for the future DNA of Argyle, not just for today’s game but for all those in the future. With best wishes. Andrew COYG!

“THE ACADEMY IS AND WILL BE A KEY ELEMENT OF PROVIDING FUTURE SUCCESS FOR ARGYLE, BOTH ON AND OFF THE PITCH"

BACK I N THE DAY Mike Curno has been scouring the Argyle Archives to seek out some interesting stories from the Pilgrims’ past. TODAY’S featured player would be up there in the Plymouth Argyle annals in the category of The Longest Time It Takes to Oblige an Autograph Hunter with His Signature. Eugene Michael Joseph Patrick Melaniphy, who was a Pilgrim between 1931-36, became known as Miffy because supporters found it difficult to remember his name and even harder to pronounce it. Confusingly, he was also known as Ted, but ‘Miffy’ became more common around Home Park as it rolled off the tongue and was certainly used most often by his Argyle team-mates. Melaniphy was born in Westport, County Mayo, Ireland, on February 5, 1913. After coming over to England, he started playing in non-league football in Surry with Redhill and later moved to Finchley, where his scoring ability brought him to the attention of Argyle manager Robert Jack, who brought him to Home Park. He joined Argyle on amateur terms and before turning professional in 1932, marking his debut by scoring twice in a 5-0 Easter Monday thumping of Oldham Athletic at Home Park. In an era when Argyle also boasted Raymond Bowden, Jack Leslie, Sammy Black, Jack Vidler

and Tommy Grozier, he made 69 appearances during the five seasons he was with Argyle and was content to play in any of the forward positions that the manager requested. His Argyle career record is: 1931-1932: 2 appearances and 2 goals; 1932-1933: 13 appearances and 5 goals; 1933-1934: 21 appearances and 10 goals; 1934-1935: 27 appearances and 13 goals; 1935- 1936: 6 appearances and 2 goals; TOTAL: 69 appearances and 32 goals. In the 1933-34 season, Miffy became the 15th Pilgrim to register hat-trick in the EFL, when he scored three-quarters of Argyle’s goals in a 4-1 Division Two victory over Bradford Park Avenue at Home Park on October 7. Melaniphy signed for Cardiff City in December 1936 and made 20 appearances for the Welsh club, scoring eight goals, before moving to Worcester City. He returned to the EFL with Northampton Town in 1939 but was able to play only three times before the second world war interrupted the league programme. He played for York City and Tranmere Rovers in the wartime leagues, but there are no further records, or any indications to where he might have moved, or which teams he played for, if any. He died on June 3, 1991, aged 79.

BEE IN

IN the olden days when I used to teach in primary schools, I used to take the children outside to spend the day learning about the environment.

I had a whole range of activities centred around life and living things, and one was the ‘Bug Walk’. In a line, with hands on the shoulders of the person in front, we would walk slowly around the wood with our eyes down. The idea was to get the perspective from an insect. You have heard of bird’s eye – this was bug’s eye. Perspective is an important thing, and some of us do get drawn into walking through life with our eyes down, seeing only one aspect – and that will probably be work, problems, things to do, issues to fix. There are times when we need to be eyes down and focussed, but this perspective can all too easily take over at the expense of all else. What gives you inspiration? What lifts your eyes up from the mundane and the everyday, from the limitations and the humdrum up to the skies? To what might be? How do you take time out to smell the roses, admire the view, take in the big picture? The answer to that probably lies in your learning style. Of the many lists of learning styles people have come up with I like the eight categories widely used in schools: the Linguistic Learner for whom the written or spoken word is most helpful, the Naturalist (being in the natural world); the Musical Learner; the Kinesthetic Learner who likes doing; the Visual or Spatial Learner; the Logical Learner; the Interpersonal Learner (learning in a group); and the Intrapersonal Learner (preferring to learn alone). Alternatively, you could ask what gives you life? Is it being outdoors, or with other people, or on your own? Is it art, or music, or a great story? Often, we find inspiration from others – through biographies or biopics, or meeting our heroes. Speeches can rouse people, as can a good

E D R I SP

preach on a Sunday morning. We may go looking for such inspiration, or it may happen to us along the way – a pleasant surprise or an occasion of grace from above. Either way, we need it. Footballers need it, too. At Home Park, we have the legendary No.12 shirt set apart in honour of you, the Green Army! What other club can boast such a fan base? Not only does it inspire the team (particularly on a cold wet afternoon away from home), it also raises their eyes up from their own circumstances to the bigger picture, and the responsibility they have to play for the shirt, and for those cheering them on. I believe that, in life, we were created with eternity in our hearts, and our identity finds its home in the truth that we are born with destiny written into our spiritual DNA; that we are more than just cells, water and chemical reactions. It is in those moments of inspiration that I am reminded of this most clearly – be it on the moors as the sun sets over the hills; by the sea as the waves crash in; amongst the crowd as the winning goal goes in; standing shoulder to shoulder with people in worship on a Sunday; or the emotional connection with a family as I share in that precious but painful moment in saying goodbye to a loved one. That is why football is more than just a game – because we can join together in sharing significant moments; find inspiration and pathos; connect in joy and at times despair; and belong to a diverse community united by a common interest. The ball, the pitch, the rules, the game: all in and of itself meaningless, brought meaning by me and you and the journey we share. That is why I am a chaplain. Not because God loves football (although he does, and he is an Argyle fan) – because God loves the people involved in football. “To see a World in a Grain of Sand And a Heaven in a Wild Flower, Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand And Eternity in an hour.” William Blake, Auguries of Innocence

It has since been rescheduled to Tuesday, February 18.

HOME THOUGHTS Christian Kent Head of Conferencing and Events

WELCOME to the latest news from the Home Park Stadium team. Since the opening of the Mayflower Grandstand in December, pace has been gathering on and off the pitch – here is a small update on some of the non-match day events that we have delivered and are looking to deliver in the next few weeks and months. During December, the team welcomed a number of events as part of the non-match day test event schedule, with the strategy of building up capacity over several functions to ensure delivery of the best possible experience. This started with the Argyle Ladies fixture against Watford, shortly followed by the Vice-Presidents’ 60th Anniversary Dinner, and culminated in the sold-out New Year’s Eve Dinner, with fireworks on the pitch and a live band. Home Park also welcomed private-hire Christmas functions, corporate meetings that kept the team even busier than usual over the Christmas period. You will be pleased to hear that things have not slowed down in January. Spaces have been booked almost every day, including meeting-rooms, training sessions, wakes and conferences. This has included a wide variety of bookers such as the NHS; Professional Investment Group; FSB; BNI; Tropic Skincare; and Portcullis Legal. So far, the team has had fantastic feedback from bookers who have

tasted the non-match day experience. So what is next? In February, there are some larger conferences, including a Mental Health Awareness Conference with Devon & Cornwall Police; some (albeit late) Christmas Parties; Murder Mystery; and Valentine’s Day. The team also continues to work towards some larger gala dinner events in early March. Home Park will also be welcoming some nationally recognised awards events, banking groups, and the club’s end-of-season awards all as we draw closer to the end of the football season. In the summer, Home Park will be hosting screenings of the Euro 2020 tournament, including all England games and selected featured games, whilst working and delivering on bigger projects such as the two concerts in July, with Westlife and Little Mix. Home Park has also secured two smaller concerts with a West End ABBA tribute (April 18) and Elton John Tribute (September 27). Finally, fans will be welcomed to a Grandstand Open Day on February 20, which will include our first-team training on the pitch and tours of the refurbished Mayflower Grandstand. If you are interested in booking space in the Mayflower Grandstand, you can contact me on Christian.kent@pafc.co.uk. COYG!

by Dave Potham "I've got a certain way I want to play and the girls are putting that into practice and we won't go too far wrong by playing that way.

In-form striker Natasha Knapman netted a double to take her career tally to 181 goals Ăą 23 of which have come this season. Mollie Taylor also weighed in with a double, and Leah Burridge, Bow Jackson, Steph Beck and an own goal completed the scoring.

Argyle return to league action next Sunday, when they receive Gillingham, looking to complete a season double. Their 2-0 win in Kent was Argyle's first of the season.

Leonard said: "It was a very good win; the girls played the game in the right way.

ARGYLE Ladies ended a fourmatch losing run with a comprehensive 8-1 victory over Buckland Athletic last Wednesday to reach the final of the Devon Senior Cup. The Pilgrims will have a score to settle with their final opponents Exeter City who surprisingly beat Argyle 4-3 in the National League Cup. The final takes place on Friday, May 15.

It has been a difficult time for Argyle manager Dave Leonard who, within a space of three weeks, lost his complete midfield through injury. Argyle have been lucky to have had a settled squad for this season but the loss of five players from a first-choice 16 players meant that the Pilgrims were left with just 12 fit players available for the Buckland tie. However, despite losing their complete engine-room through injury, and without Jessie Jones Argyle, they showed they have a quality squad.

Argyle went into last weekend celebrating reaching the semi-final of the National League Plate competition, hoping to have got past Stevenage on Sunday.

FA NATIONAL PLATE

Once again, after this match, Argyle are on the road with visits to Keynsham Town, Portsmouth and Yeovil Town. Argyle's Development team were sceheduled to play their most important match of the season last weekend, when they took on local rivals Plympton in a South West League Western Division match. It was seven weeks since Argyle previously played a match, so a result was vital if they want to achieve the promotion they were denied last season. Next up is the visit of Bristol Ladies Union in the quarter-final of the Bristol Soccerworld League Cup.

GOOD afternoon, and welcome to everyone for this evening’s EFL2 encounter against Crawley Town for what should be another highly entertaining affair under the floodlights. With eight EFL2 matches, two Central League and 2 Premier League Under-23 Cup matches in the next 33 days, it promises to be a very busy period, on and off the field. As well as keeping on top of the football-related administration, the next couple of months will see the club preparing its evidence for the EFL’s Equality Code of Practice. Regulation 119 requires clubs to observe and comply with the CoP and failure to do so could result in a breach of regulations charge. We last went through this process three years ago, since when the CoP has been reviewed and the process simplified. However, it is fair to say that, in these three years, Plymouth Argyle has made good progress in our aim to make Home Park as welcoming and inclusive for all supporters regardless of their age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership status, or their pregnancy and maternity status. These specific groups, known as the ‘Protected Characteristics’, are protected from discrimination in law through the Equality Act 2010. Notwithstanding the legal and regulatory requirements to prevent discrimination, and to promote equality, it is simply the right thing to do, and is also a requirement of the club’s respect value: “We are committed to inclusion and we work to eliminate inappropriate discrimination, in all its forms, so that we can all work and watch football in an environment free from intimidation, victimization or harassment.” The Code of Practice examines the club’s policies, processes and activities in relation to all aspects of equality and inclusion including, accountability and commitment; reporting and tackling discrimination; data capture and equality monitoring; policy and legal compliance, and education and training.

SEC’S FOOTBALL It is not just about the internal aspects of the football club, but also relates to the players, coaches, non-football staff and, very importantly, the supporters. An area that we have struggled with in recent years is the equality data capture of the Green Army. To that end, in the coming months, we will be asking supporters to complete an anonymous survey based on the protected characteristics, so that, for the first time, we will be able to really understand the make-up of our supporters. Using that data will allow a comparison to be made to the local and national demographic and , where desirable, actions to be taken to encourage underrepresented groups to attend Home Park and to ensure that the facilities are appropriate for those groups that are already regular attendees. Further updates on our progress towards achieving the CoP will be provided when available but, in the meantime, if anyone has any specific questions or suggestions on equality and inclusion matters, please send them to our DLO and Equality Champion Nikki Francis - nikki.francis@ pafc.co.uk – or direct to me, zac.newton@pafc.co.uk. Enjoy the match. COYG!

OUR youngsters failed to shake off that losing feeling as this was their sixth defeat in their last seven EFL Youth Alliance League and Cup games. They started well as Will Davies Jenkins set off on a forceful run through the centre of the main road only to see his low effort fly narrowly wide from 20 yards. Jenkins-Davies then found Rubin Wilson only for the Argyle top-scorer to fire straight at Forest Green goalkeeper Owens from 15 yards. Forest Green got better as the half wore on and goalkeeper Harry Townsend was forced to make a fine save to deny Luke Hallett before the visitors took the lead on the half-hour when Vaughn Covil met a corner at the near post to bundle the ball home. The second half was just a minute old when Ollie Tomlinson’s back pass was intercepted by Oliver Artwell, who round Townsend to make it 2-0. Argyle replied with Charlie Miller letting fly from 30 yards for Owens to push the ball out, but the game was practically over as a contest on 57 minutes as Covil found space on the edge of the area to fire low into the corner of the net. To their credit, Argyle made changes and fought their way back into the game pulling a goal back on 70 minutes when a trialist took substitute Scott Crocker’s pass to finish low into the corner of Owen’s net from 12 yards. Hope of a point came into the Argyle minds, five minutes from time, when the trialist fired in a shot that Owens blocked for Crocker to follow up and net the rebound. Argyle: Harry Townsend; Isaac Burdon (Finley Craske 75), Brandon Pursall (Oscar Halls 70), Charlie Miller, Ollie Tomlinson, Jude Boyd, Jarvis Cleal, Jeremiah Medine, Rubin Wilson (Scott Crocker 78), A Trialist, Will Jenkins-Davies. Substitute (not used): Tyler Coombes.

PREMIER LEAGUE FLOODLIT CUP

WILL JENKINSDAVIES

A FROZEN pitch at Home Park saw switch our Premier League Under-15 Floodlit Cup game to the Saints Staplewood Training Ground. The Argyle youngsters could have taken all three points against their Academy One opponents despite giving up home advantage. Argyle started the game well, taking a tenth-minute lead when Welsh Under-15 international Will JenkinsDavies ran through the Saints defence before coolly slotting past the home goalkeeper. Southampton came back at Argyle to equalise on 25 minutes when a striker found the roof of James Morley’s goal from eight yards. Morley was adjudged to have committed a foul in his area for the Saints to take a 37th-minute lead from the penalty spot but Argyle went in at the break level after Jeffrey Forkuo had fired home from the edge of the area. Southampton started the second half strongly, enjoying the majority of the possession before taking the lead on the hour. To their credit, Argyle came back at the Saints and their determination was rewarded on 70 minutes when Harvey Field headed home from a right-wing corner. All three points could have been secured in the dying minutes, but Argyle wasted two good opportunities. Their final group game will be against Fulham at Home Park on Tuesday, February 4 with a 6.30pm kick-off.

WAY TO GO, DARREN WE are delighted to announce that former Yeovil Town manager Darren Way has joined Argyle. Darren, 40, has accepted a role in the academy at Home Park, with a specific focus on the Under-18 age group. Born in Plymouth, Way signed schoolboy terms at Norwich City in 1994, earning six caps for England at Under-16 level. Upon leaving Norwich, Darren made over 200 appearances for Yeovil Town between 2000-2006, before joining Swansea City: 16 appearances later, the no-nonsense midfielder returned to Huish Park for another spell. In 2010, he hung up his boots, but remained in Somerset as a part of the Glovers’ coaching staff, working his way up to assistant manager. When Argyle legend Paul Sturrock left Yeovil in December 2015, Darren took the hot seat on an interim basis. By the end of the month, he was appointed full-time manager, a role he held until March this year. Welcome to Home Park, Darren.

Argyle: James Morley; Adam Poole, Harvey Field, Jeffrey Forkuo, Oscar Halls, Harry Gregory (Brandon Quinn half-time), Freddie Issaka (Brandon Gavican-Lapthorne 50), Will JenkinsDavies, Jaydon Gilbert, Ryan Downing (Izeak Aaron-Driscoll 60), Jack Endacott.

A further loss followed against Rotherham (1-0), giving everyone cause for concern as Argyle dropped to 18th in League 2. But, despite their league position, few fans were prepared for the result of the subsequent game, an FA Cup shock loss away to Dorchester (1-0) – and there were a few members of the Green Army ready to voice their concerns…

PLAYERS

Seven years is a long time for anyone, and that is especially true in the world of sport. Of the 29 players and five coaches listed, only two remain directly involved in the club – midfielder Jamie Lowry and first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell. Jamie went on to play 11 games for Argyle in 2012-13 after overcoming an ankle injury during pre-season, whilst Kevin’s role then is largely the same as it is now. Jamie Lowry has since finished his professional playing career and is now Youth Development Coach for Argyle, as well as turning out for local outfit Plymouth Parkway.

COVER STAR: DURRELL BERRY AND ANDRES GURRIERI Durrell Berry and Andres Gurrieri graced the front of the programme for Burton Albion’s visit in a particularly tough season for the Greens – 2012 threw up some difficult results both home and away; however, it was all smiles on the cover as Argentine midfielder Gurrieri is pictured after scoring his first, and Argyle’s second, goal of the day against Rochdale after just seven minutes, following a Guy Madjo penalty after just four!

Once again @Only1Argyle have shrewdly lost in the FA Cup 1st round against amateurs to concentrate on the league.

MATCH REPORT: CHELTENHAM TOWN

With the memory of the Green’s victory against the Dale fresh, Argyle turned up to a chilly Tuesday night away match at Cheltenham’s Abbey Business Stadium raring to go. Conor Hourihane opened proceedings in the 30th minute with a fine shot into the bottom corner, before Steve Elliott replied seven minutes later. Kaid Mohamed then netted the winner 13 minutes from time for Town, bringing Argyle’s three-match winning run in all competitions to an end.

HARD TO

BEAT

You must be delighted to have scored a goal in both your away and home Argyle debuts? Absolutely. I think the main thing for me when I came here was to get games but to come in, to come off the bench and score two goals is brilliant, a really good start. How did it feel to get your first home goal on? It felt good. During the whole game, I was excited to get on because the fans were obviously pushing the team on, and to get the goal at the noisy end of the stadium was a great feeling. What helped convince you to come here? There were a few factors. I had big Ryan Edwards at Blackpool with me; of course, he was here before. He told me how good it was. I had also heard a lot of good things about the manager. The main thing is that he used to be a striker, so I felt that I could develop my game a lot more by learning from someone who has been there and done it in my position. Plymouth, as a city, is just a really nice place as well; it’s just a good place to be able to progress my career. We have a lot of strikers in the team, but what type of striker are you? I do think I offer something a wee bit different. I like running in behind – I will constantly be on the shoulder of the last defender – and, of course, if and when the chances come, I like to think that I would score. You are very quick – that must be a great help to you to get behind defences? Exactly. Because of the way I play, on the shoulder, I don’t think there are many defenders who would be able to get back in time and stop me from having a chance one against one with the ’keeper. So, if the ball is right for me, then I think I will have a lot of chances because of my pace.

Most stupid way you have injured yourself?

“Probably when I was playing golf I missed a putt and hit my ankle"

How beneficial is it to have a manager who knows your position? It is important. As I said, he has been there and done the things that I would like to do. It is very, very beneficial because I think he will be able to see the game a lot differently to other managers. Having played in that position himself, he will understand the frustrations you have as a striker; how to get better; and also how to create more chances for yourself. I have been here a couple of weeks now and the shooting sessions that we have done are more game-like situations or what we can expect to happen in a game. I think, if there is anything I need to speak to him about, then he would be really, really helpful. How did it feel to play for Rangers, the team that you support? It was brilliant. I can’t remember how many appearances I made exactly but I made two starts, scored two goals for my boyhood club. To play in front of 50,000 people at Ibrox was the best feeling in the world. How would you describe Ally McCoist? Ally McCoist gave me my debut away to Falkirk in the cup. I have got a lot of time for him and I really appreciate the chance he gave me; it was good to work under such a legend for the club. In your first start for Rangers, you scored twice – talk us through that? One of them was an overhead kick, with the left swinger as they call it. I don’t even know if you can call it an overhead kick because I never even fell backwards. I swung my leg at it and thankfully it did go in. It was a surreal feeling. It was at the stadium where the reserves played their games so I had played a lot of games there that season and I was used to scoring goals there. Obviously, there were a lot more fans, it was full of Rangers fans but, because I had been used to that pitch, it was just a great feeling to do it for the first team. Do you feel you got a fair chance at Ibrox? Football doesn’t work out sometimes. A lot of things change, a lot of managers change, and the way teams like to play change. As I said, I achieved my dream by playing for Rangers so I would never regret anything that happened. Who was your hero growing up and why? Being a striker, I always used to watch Thierry Henry. That was just because of the way he played the game; he was the one who always got in behind. He was fast and he >>>

rAndOm Qs What languages do you wish you could speak I wish I could speak Spanish, because I have spent a bit of time with Spanish players so I would want to know what they were saying about me

Before going out to Livingston how did you find previous loan spells? My first loan was at Raith Rovers. I was still young, only 18, I think. It really benefitted me. I went back to Rangers the following season, then I went to St Mirren. As I said, some things don’t work out. I think I only scored three goals in six months which is disappointing but that’s what happens – you just have to get on with it and go again. I went back to Raith after St Mirren and I did well again. You go on loan to gain experience first as a young pro. Obviously you want to score goals so that you can come back and compete for a place at Rangers and I did that. I came back in pre-season and had a good go at it. Sometimes managers think that you need more experience – that’s fine – so I went on loan again to Livingston.

What would be the funniest sport to play drunk? Tennis or badminton

When you did go to Livingston, you had a very successful time. How was that? It was very good. My first spell was in the Championship, and we managed to gain promotion that season. Unfortunately, I got injured before the play-offs, so I missed what really counted but I had done my part to help the team get there; I scored seven goals and got them up the table. My second spell was in the Premiership. I had come back from injury in the December and scored seven goals between then and the end of the season.

How would you sum up the internet? It is crazy, what you can find

How did you feel leaving Rangers? It was gutting but at that time it was the best thing for me and my career. It hasn’t worked out so far at Blackpool but coming here, hopefully I can help Argyle get to League One then see what happens from then on.

The worst smell you’ve ever smelled is? My brother works on a farm so going into his shed when he has his boiler suit on

You haven’t featured as much for Blackpool; how do you see that situation? Again, it’s one of those things. I think I had made three or four starts, which is not what I hoped would happen, but that’s life; you just need to get on with it. I had to go and find a solution so that I can go back in the summer a better player. What’s it like being the only Scot in the dressing-room? Every time you speak people mock your accent, which I do to them, as well. I like the banter; the changing-room is really good. How do you feel being so far from home? I moved away from home when I was 14 or 15. I moved in with a family in Glasgow, then I moved into a flat myself when I was 16, so I am used to being away from home. Its

How would you improve the media?

“I would make it a lot more positive. A lot of things you see are negative so it needs to be about how you can improve and things like that" not as if it’s the end of the world – you can get flights from Exeter. My dad used to be a long-distance lorry driver so he would drive here no problem, so I really don’t mind it. The only thing is I have a missus and a dog, so they’ll be moving down as soon as possible and then we’ll be sorted. Who has given you the best advice in your career and what is it? That’s a tough one – probably some of the quotes we were given at Rangers that were on the wall. “Hard work beats talent, if talent doesn’t work hard” is one. “Never give up” is the main one, actually. You have seen that I have had a lot of loans in my career, but you always know, within yourself, that you are good enough and you know that you can affect teams in different ways. Who is your best mate in football? It has got to be Jordan Thompson; we have been at four or five clubs together. He has just moved on from Blackpool. I lived with him for a few years when I was at Rangers and we went to Livingston and Raith together.

LOOKING GRAND IT was a bumper start to the New Year from the Big Green Lottery, as we gave away £1,000, a special Argyle experience and the finalists for our Grand Draw to win a massive £12,000. Starting with the rollover draw, we reached the maximum £500 and congratulations to Ben Sculthorp, from Merseyside (jackpot numbers 8, 14, 18, 24), who will receive a cheque for £500 very shortly. Another Pilgrim set to receive a cheque for £500 is Peter Kenah, from Staines-Upon-Thames (member 1498), winner of the monthly draw for December. Raymond Hutton, from Plymouth (member 837), has won a hospitality experience in the Mayflower Grandstand. Congratulations to all our winners and the draw has been made for our 10 finalists for the Grand Draw to win £12,000. For more information on the Big Green Lottery, drop us a message on bgl@pafc.co.uk or you can just sign up online, win some money and help raise funds for the Argyle Academy. As well as the weekly rollover, members of the Big Green Lottery are entered into a monthly draw for £500, the grand annual draw for £12,000 and monthly bonus prizes...plus a discount in the Argyle Superstore and bigmatch ticket priority.

50/50

LOTTS OF GOOD STUFF GOOD evening all and welcome to your 50/50 Lottery brief. What a great league position the team are now placed in - the lads have really done us proud so far. Evening games always seem to add that extra bit of atmosphere and, with a big crowd behind the team, I hope we can get three more points to keep us in the mix. Come on You Greens. The stadium is now looking fantastic and everyone at Argyle should be really proud of themselves for all the hard work involved, giving us the fans a bright outlook for the future. Well done, team. Now that the works to our stadium are complete, we have a great prize on offer in the half-time draw: the Dave Rowntree Match-Day Experience. Dave - proudly sponsored by your 50/50 Lottery - is the official Argyle photographer at home and away games and that boy has certainly clocked up a few miles over the years. You will get to spend the day as Dave's assistant on a Saturday game. You will arrive at the stadium at noon to meet and greet Dave, who will take you for a tour around with visits to the changing-rooms, hospitality facilities, and to meet the media team and have tea/coffee and a pasty. Going to pitch side before kick-off, Dave will give you tips about getting the best shots - so remember to bring your camera. At half-time, there will be various activities, including the 50/50 draw, of course, and, after the game, you can watch the man-of-the-match presentation in the Club Argyle lounge. This will be a brilliant day out for the lucky winner. We also welcome a brand new sponsor on board - The Big Sheep in North Devon have kindly donated a pair of tickets, which will enable you to have a great day out at their family entertainment theme park. Hill Lane Tennis Club - a longtime sponsor - also donate yet another family voucher. Tonight's prizes are: First - cash; Second - The Dave Rowntree Match-Day Experience; Third - An annual family membership to Hill Lane Tennis Club, Plymouth; Fourth - A pair of tickets for The Big Sheep theme park in Bideford. Thanks as always for supporting the 50/50 Lottery and remember - you have to be in it to win it! Enjoy the game. Ken Beale and our great 50/50 Lottery team

WHERE

The JobServe Community Stadium was opened in 2008 and has been the home of Colchester United since the Us left their old Layer Road ground. The stadium also plays host to a range of other activities, including conferences, banqueting, weddings, parties and events. It hosts boxing dinners, darts opens, comedy nights, tribute band nights, fashion shows, award ceremonies and proms. The stadium was used as an open-air music venue for the first time on June 29, 2014, for an Elton John concert. The ground is made up of four stands, including the West Stand on the west side of the pitch, which towers over the other three. All four the stands are single-tiered, covered and all-seated stands with the West Stand consisting of a row of executive boxes and corporate hospitality areas running across the back of it. The Weston Homes Stand, at the South end of the stadium, also has a police control box incorporated into it. Visiting supporters are usually housed in the northern part of the JobServe Stand, where around 1,000 supporters can be accommodated, but clubs with a larger travelling support also have the Roman Cars Stand, where up to 2,000 supporters can be seated.

HOW

By Car To get to the Jobserve Community Stadium from Home Park, get yourself

Colchester United v Argyle Sky Bet League Two Saturday, February 8 3pm Capacity 10,105 (1,000-2,000 away) Record Attendance: 10,064 v Norwich City, January 16, 2010 Miles and miles to follow the Greens: 583 return How long: five hours and three minutes by car; nine hours and 23 minutes by train

on to the A38 from Outland Road and merge on to the M5. Exit from Junction 29 on to Honiton Road and continue for 19 miles. Continue on to the A303 until you reach the M3 and continue for 11 miles before taking the M25 exit. Exit at junction 28 and follow United Way to your destination.

Car-Parking There are 700 car parking spaces available at the stadium which cost from £6-£10, depending on how close to the exit you are parked. You must prebook your car-parking space in advance via the Colchester United website; all the spaces very frequently sell out. If that happens, fans are directed to an overspill car-park located on the nearby industrial estate, which costs £8. Food and Drink The JobServe Community Stadium is on the outskirts of Colchester which means that there are not very many pubs around, the closest one being three quarters of a mile away and that admits only home fans. The Dog and Pheasant and the Balkerne Gate pubs both allow away supporters. Inside the ground, typical food is on sale in the kiosks behind the away end - pasties, pies, burgers and sausage rolls to name a few. The club also allows access to the bar and toilets located on the concourse area of the Weston Homes Stand before each home game, from 12.15pm. Drinks can be taken outside of the stadium to enjoy the pre-match entertainment such as live bands playing in the marquee.

IU Energy

Since 2008, IU Energy has been Argyle’s official energy partner, supplying us with 100% green power, and no doubt you will have noticed them adding to their green credentials with 58.85kW of solar panels, spelling out ‘PAFC’ on the wonderful new Mayflower Grandstand.

When it comes to business energy and green technology, IU Energy has it covered. Based in Plymouth, they are regular winners of regional and national awards. Last year, this included UK Consultancy of the Year from the British Gas-sponsored TELCA awards. What does this mean to you? Usually, improvements to your profits. If fact, up to 7.7% on the bottom line of

businesses that go 100% renewable. How much extra trade does that correspond to? That is just one of the upsides because, with the mood of the public focused on climate change, greener businesses are gaining sales over their rivals. As an illustration, electric vehicle charging points attract customers. Let us not forget Plymouth City Council’s climate emergency declaration – the city must be net zerocarbon by 2030. That is a full 20 years ahead of the UK’s commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement. With IU Eneregy’s help, Plymouth Argyle will be ready. Will you? Contact IU and they will show you how. ARGYLE IN THE EFL IN THE 2010s (PART II) OUR longest undefeated run in the last decade occurred early in its only promotion season for us, 2016-17. Following defeats in their first two EFL matches, Derek Adams’ men got back to winning ways on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at Notts County. Jake Jervis and Latvian centre-half Nauris Bulvitis were on target at Meadow Lane. This win began a 14-game run without a loss, which lasted until November 19, when an Omar Bogle inspired Grimsby Town beat us 3-0 at Home Park. An impressive 12 of the 14 matches were won. This sequence contained our jointlongest run of consecutive EFL wins in the 2010s, six – starting with the victory in Nottingham and continuing up to and including our 2-0 Devon Derby success at Exeter City on Saturday, September 17. It also contained our longest ever run of away wins, seven – again starting with the County victory and concluding with a come from behind 2-1 success at Crewe Alexandra, Craig Tanner and Graham Carey with our goals. George Cooper was in the Alex line-up and will not want to be reminded that he missed a penalty to put Crewe 2-0 up. At home, our longest undefeated run came in 2018 during our time in League One. Following a 3-1 defeat to Wigan Athletic at Home Park on Saturday, January 20, we won seven and drew one of our final eight home fixtures of the 2017-18 season as a late, ultimately unsuccessful, bid for the play-offs was launched. This run contained six consecutive wins, a home record for the decade. The first two home games of the 201819 season were drawn, but a crushing 5-1 defeat by visitors Peterborough United on Saturday, August 19, brought our ten-game undefeated run to an abrupt end.

The Wigan defeat also galvanised the Greens into our other six-game winning run of the decade. This run included five wins from five games in February, 2018, our second-best ever calendar month in the EFL in our history. Away from home, our longest undefeated run is also ten games – the final ten away fixtures of our 2016-17 promotion season. This sequence started with a 1-0 win at Cambridge United on Saturday, February 4, 2017. Our winner that day came courtesy of Antoni Sarcevic, who was making his full debut for the club. The final game of the run was our last match of the season, a 1-1 draw away to Grimsby Town on Saturday, May 6. Jimmy Spencer scored a late equaliser to record our sixth stalemate from the ten matches. More negatively, our longest run without a win in the 2010s was 13 games. This started with two away defeats at the end of the 2017-18 season – 2-0 at Scunthorpe and 5-2 at Gillingham – as our play-off push hit the rocks. It then continued into the 2018-19 campaign as we went a further 11 EFL games without a victory. In a single season, our longest run of games without a win was 12, early in the 2017-18 campaign. Our longest run of defeats in the 2010s came early in the 2011-12 season. Following two successive relegations and entering administration, Argyle, under the management of Peter Reid, found themselves back in the bottom tier as they began their campaign away to Shrewsbury Town. A 1-1 draw, courtesy of a late equaliser from Carl Fletcher, gave the Green Army some encouragement. However, the next eight league games were all lost and we found ourselves bottom of the entire EFL by late September. Reid had been replaced by Fletcher by that point and the Welsh international ended our losing run by winning his first game in charge, 2-0 at home to Macclesfield Town on Saturday, September 24. Warren Feeney and Robbie Williams were our scorers as we celebrated our first three points and clean sheet of the season.

HISTORY

Founded: 1896 Home: Broadfield Stadium Nickname: The Red Devils Rivals: AFC Wimbledon Founded in 1896, Crawley started in the West Sussex League before transferring to the Mid-Sussex League later in the year. The club disbanded in 1935, but were re-established in the Brighton, Hove & District League, three years later. They then switched to the Sussex County League in 1951 and moved on to the Metropolitan League five years later. The club finally secured their move from amateur to semi-professional status in 1962 as they were accepted into the Southern League the following year. They secured promotion out of Division One in 1968–69, only to be relegated the following season. Crawley Town turned fully professional in 2005 but faced financial difficulties straight away and entered administration the following year. The club survived and appointed Steve Evans as manager in May 2007. Evans led them into the EFL as champions of the Conference in 2010–11 and then

secured promotion in their first season in the League Two. They then spent three seasons in League One before their relegation in 2015.

Michael Luyambula recalled from loan spell Crawleytownfc.com and Twitter

Birmingham City goalkeeper Michael Luyambula has been recalled in order to obtain more game time this season. The club thanked Michael for his historic performances in a Reds shirt, most notably against Walsall, Norwich City and Stoke City in the Carabao Cup. Sentiments towards the German national on social media have been very warm towards the promising shot stopper, with comments from fans and staff showing that he will be missed: @CrawleyReds1 “good luck mate and many thanks for efforts. There’s been a few great memories in your short spell here. All the best.” @LucaFernandoPa1 “Good luck mate, thanks for being so welcoming when I got the chance to train with you, good luck.”

Reds bow out in Sussex Senior Cup crawleytownfc.com

CRAWLEY TOWN 2 EASTBOURNE BOROUGH 3 Goals from Gyliano van Velzen and Ricardo German weren’t enough as Reds exited the Sussex Senior Cup against National League South’s Eastbourne Borough at Horsham’s Camping World Stadium. German’s goal made it 3-2 with 18 minutes to go and Reds pushed forward in the closing stages in search of an equaliser but it wouldn’t come.

If it’s not broken, then don’t fix it – Crawley Town opinion Alain Harper, Crawley & Horley Observer WALSALL 2 CRAWLEY TOWN 1

If it’s not broken, then don’t fix it was the supporters opinion on the coach as we travelled back from the game at Walsall. Crawley were forced into making a change to the starting line-up after the warm up when Nathan Ferguson was replaced by Tarryn Allarahia, the only change from the team that beat Bradford. Until the 70th minute the Red Devils were in control of the game and leading with the solitary strike from Panutche Camara in the first half on 27 minutes. Crawley could and should have increased the lead with Tarryn Allarakhia strike from the edge of the area flashing past the post in the first ten minutes before our goal, then in the second half, Ashley Nadesan’s one on one with the keeper could have done better. Had the team taken either of those chances then we probably would have come away with the three points and continued the unbeaten run. On 70 minutes, manager John Yems decided to go more defensively and brought on Tom Dallison for Nadesan and George Francomb for Allarakhia which changed the formation of the side and from then gave Walsall the opportunity to push forward rather than having to defend against Crawley’s two strikers. The host’s equaliser came from the right when Josh Gordon cut inside two defenders and fired his shot passed Glenn Morris into the net. Crawley still hadn’t learnt a lesson from the equaliser and still allowed the defence to be dragged apart and with two minutes remaining Wes McDonald cut in from the left again beating two defenders to fire a dripping shot over Morris into the net, this off the bar and post. The Red Devils had been undone and all the hard work of the earlier stages of the game meant nothing and no points for the first time in the New Year. The 154 travelling supporters left the stadium bemoaning the timing and use of the substitutions – hopefully everyone will learn from this, both Management and Players. Crawley Town: Morris, Doherty, Palmer, Nadesan (Dallison 59), Allarakhia (Francomb 59), Tunnicliffe, Sendles-White, Bulman, Dacres-Cogley, Camara, Lubala

Reece Grego-Cox and Joe McNerney both returned after injury in a strong Crawley line-up but they started poorly and Eastbourne punished them in the seventh minute. Reds conceded possession poorly and Jack Skinner ran clear and although his lob came off the bar, it fell for the former Hull City striker to tap the ball into an empty net. Jones had to be alert to clear under pressure after McNerney’s back pass fell just short but Reds gradually began to play with some rhythm and they levelled in the 26th minute. David Sesay’s shot was too powerful for Borough keeper Franco Ravizzoli and he spilled it into the path of van Velzen who made it 1-1 from close in. Eastbourne came flying out of the blocks after the break and had a two-goal cushion ten minutes into the second half. Luer grabbed his second of the game after a delightful through ball by Kane Wills meant he was one on one with Jones and despite Jones getting what seemed a strong enough hand to his shot, the ball trickled into the bottom corner. Borough’s third came in the 55th minute when Jones failed to deal with a cross and Jack Skinner nodded home to make it 3-1. Reds struggled to get back into the tie but were given a lifeline when Ravizzoli was beaten to the ball by German who was pulled down as he tried to round the keeper. German’s penalty was saved, but he reacted quickest to score from the rebound. Reds: Jones, Dacres-Cogley (Allarakhia 45), McNerney (Tunnicliffe 45), Sendles-White, Sesay, Francomb, van Velzen, Powell,

Football historian LEIGH EDWARDS selects ten post-war Crawley Town Classic Campaigns 1968-69

Phil Basey was leading marksman with 17 goals as Crawley Town won promotion to the Southern League Premier Division in 1968-69. Starting with a 3-0 win at home to Wisbech Town, they underlined their promotion credentials with an exciting 14-match unbeaten run. Crawley triumphed 5-0 at Gravesend, then Phil Basey grabbed a hat-trick in a 4-2 win at home to Corby Town. They maintained their challenge with just two defeats in 19 matches, winning a home 4-0 to Bexley United and 5-2 to Merthyr Tydfil. John Leedham, John Maggs and Derek Tharme were ever-present as Crawley finished fourth with 55 points.

56

1971-72

Crawley took Exeter City to an FA Cup first-round replay in 1971-72. After losing two of their opening three matches, they climbed the Southern League First Division (South) table with four straight wins, slamming five goals past Woodford Town and four past Ashford Town. In the FA Cup, Crawley beat Eastbourne Town 4-0, East Grinstead 3-0, Horsham 3-1 and Hastings United 3-2 to reach the competition proper for the second year running. They drew 0-0 at home to Exeter in the first round before losing 2-0 in the replay. Phil Basey netted four goals as Crawley trounced Ramsgate 7-0 in April, finishing fourth.

1983-84

Brian Gregory was leading marksman for the second consecutive season as Crawley won promotion to the Southern League Premier Division in 1983-84. The Reds were unbeaten in their opening four matches, then overcame defeats at home to Poole and Basingstoke to emerge as pacesetters with a 13-match unbeaten run, trouncing Thanet United 6-0. Brian Gregory grabbed hat-tricks in 5-0 wins at home to Woodford and Andover as Crawley finished Southern League Southern Division runners-up. Steve Breach, Rick Collier and Brian Gregory were ever-present, while Cliff Cant and Bob Glozier were also key figures.

c i ss a Cl 1984-85

Terry Robbins was top scorer with 24 goals as Town finished third in the Southern League Premier Division in 1984-85. Newly promoted Crawley began life back in the Premier Division with a 1-1 draw at home to Corby Town and lost only two of their opening 11 matches, including a 2-1 victory at Cheltenham Town. Terry Robbins grabbed a hat-trick in a thrilling 4-4 draw at Folkestone, then scored four times in an 8-1 demolition of AP Leamington. The Reds lost just one of their last 11 games and Bob Glozier was ever-present as they finished only three points behind champions Cheltenham Town.

1989-90

Crawley won the Sussex Senior Cup for the first time in 1989-90. They hammered Chichester City 8-0 in the second round, then trounced Peacehaven & Telscombe 7-0 and beat Selsey 3-0 and Southwick 2-1 to reach the Sussex Senior Cup final for only the second time, beating Eastbourne United 2-1. Despite starting their Southern League Premier Division campaign with a 4-0 win over Bromsgrove Rovers, results were disappointing but the Reds slammed five goals past Waterlooville and Gravesend, then triumphed 4-3 at home to Corby. Alan Lester and Tony Vessey were ever-present, while David Boyce was leading scorer.

1991-92

Town reached the FA Cup third round for the first time in 1991-92. The Reds defeated Molesey 5-1, Sheppey United 2-0, Erith & Belvedere 2-1 and Horsham 3-0 to reach the FA Cup competition proper for the first time in 20 years. Two goals by Craig Whitington plus others from Cliff Cant and Tim Hulme gave Crawley a 4-2 win at home to Northampton Town in the first round, then Tim Hulme scored twice in their 2-0 second round win at Hayes. They lost 5-0 to Brighton watched by 18,031 at the Goldstone Ground in the third round. Crawley narrowly avoided relegation from the Southern League Premier Division.

cCAMPAIGNS 2002-03

Crawley won the Southern League Cup in 2002-03. The Reds beat Sittingbourne 2-0, Hastings United 1-0, Ashford Town 2-1, Burnham 4-1, Chelmsford City after their opponents fielded an ineligible player and King's Lynn 1-0 to reach the Southern League Cup final, defeating Halesowen Town 3-2 on aggregate. Nick McDonnell was leading marksman with 15 goals as Crawley finished seventh in the Southern League Premier Division and also reached the FA Cup second round for only the third time, beating Tiverton Town 3-2 in a first-round replay before losing 2-1 at home to Dagenham & Redbridge.

2003-04

Charlie Macdonald was top scorer with 19 goals as Town stormed to the Southern League title in 2003-04. The Reds were never seriously challenged after going top of the table, trouncing Hednesford 6-1 as they netted a total of 77 Southern League goals and had the equal best defensive record, finishing 12 points above runners-up Weymouth to reach the Conference for the first time. They also won the Southern

League Cup, defeating Havant & Waterlooville 3-2, Welling United 1-0, Dover Athletic 1-0 and Eastleigh 2-0 en route to the final, then beating Moor Green 4-1 on aggregate to clinch a memorable Double.

2010-11

Crawley won the Blue Square Premier title with a record 105 points in 2010-11. Steve Evans’ side began with a 1-0 defeat at home to Grimsby but then lost only two more matches, 2-1 at AFC Wimbledon and 3-2 at home to Newport County. The Reds were undefeated in their last 30 games including a 7-0 win over Altrincham and won the title by a 15-point margin. Matt Tubbs was leading marksman in the Blue Square Premier with 37 goals. They also reached the FA Cup fifth round for the first time, beating Newport County, Guiseley, Swindon Town, Derby County and Torquay before losing 1-0 at Manchester United.

2011-12

Town won promotion in their first EFL season in 2011-12. They began life in League Two with a 2-2 draw at Port Vale and were leaders at Christmas after losing just three of their first 21 games. Steve Evans’ side also beat Bury, Redbridge, Bristol City and Hull City to reach the FA Cup fifth round, losing 2-0 at home to Stoke City. Top scorer Matt Tubbs was sold to AFC Bournemouth for a club record £800,000 in January and Crawley won only once in 11 matches before reviving their promotion push with four straight wins. They clinched promotion in third place with a last-day 1-0 win at Accrington.

GOLDEN YEMS

His most prestigious role arguably would have been the time he spent at the Vitality Stadium, where he played a significant role in seeing the Cherries rise from League One to the top flight JOHN Yems was appointed Crawley Town manager in December 2019, starting his second spell at the People’s Pension Stadium a year and a half after leaving Premier League Bournemouth. He had been a key part of manager Eddie Howe’s backroom team but left the Cherries in 2018 following the expiry of his contract, with the club’s stated wish to review his role of Football Operations Manager. With more than 30 years in the game, Yems has built up a wealth of experience and has contacts throughout the game and that reputation was enhanced because of the part he played in Bournemouth’s rise.

caretaker managers, along with Ben Judge and Dave Woozley, in succession to John Hollins. The trio defied the odds to ensure the Reds remained in the National League despite having been handed a ten-point deduction at the beginning of the season. After leaving Crawley in 2007, he dropped into non-league football with Grays Athletic, initially as chief scout before becoming first-team coach in October 2007. Following that, he was Paul Tisdale’s right-hand man at Exeter City for a few months in 2009, joining in February and leaving in July as he did not want to relocate his family from Sussex. Despite not following the well-trodden path of transitioning from football player to football manager, he is vastly experienced, having worked at several clubs in England, and possess a UEFA A coaching licence. His most prestigious role arguably would have been the time he spent at the Vitality Stadium, where he played a significant role in seeing the Cherries rise from League One to the top flight. His next position came in the Westcountry, with Torquay United. His roles involved scouting for the first team as well as undertaking analysis at Plainmoor.

Yems’ work in football over the years has come away from the pitch, as opposed to on it, having primarily been a coach or within recruitment, helping to identify and coach the next crop of talent with London clubs Crystal Palace, Fulham and Millwall.

From a scouting viewpoint, his most recent post prior to making a return to management was at St James Park with Premier League Newcastle United.

His first spell in charge of Crawley came in October 2006, when he was appointed as one of three co-

Long-serving Reds’ midfielder Dannie Bulman joined Yems' management team, with Edu Rubio continuing as firstteam coach.

Yems, 60, returned to Crawley at the beginning on December, replacing Gabriele Cioffi following a run of just one win in 11 League Two games.

JOFF VANSITTART

Experienced striker Joff Vansittart helped Town to achieve the Southern League and Cup Double in 2003-04. Starting with Brighton, he failed to make an impact with the Seagulls and initially joined Crawley in August 1991, moving to Sutton United in June 1995. He was loaned back to Crawley during the 1996-97 campaign and moved to Dover Athletic in May 1998. Joining Farnborough Town in July 2001, he returned to Crawley in May 2003 and partnered Charlie Macdonald in the Red Devils’ attack as they clinched Conference status for the first time in the club’s history. He briefly rejoined Sutton in July 2004.

He was loaned to Rotherham, then back to Crawley in January 2014 before spells at AFC Wimbledon, Portsmouth, Eastleigh, Havant & Waterlooville and Weymouth.

TODAY’S match is only the eighth meeting meeting of Argyle and Crawley since the two teams met for the first time in West Sussex in October 2011. The return at Home Park was memorable for a last-minute point-saver from that season’s Player of the Season, as CHARLIE ROSE recalls.

THE TEAMS Argyle: Jake Cole, Paul Bignot, Darren Purse, Maxime Blanchard, Onismor Bhasera, Luke Young, Paul Wotton, Simon Walton, Ashley Hemmings, Warren Feeney, Matt Lecointe. Crawley Town: Scott Shearer, David Hunt, Pablo Mills, Claude Davis, Dean Howell, Sergio Torres, Scott Neilson, Kyle McFadzean, Dannie Bulman, Matt Tubbs, Tyrone Barnett. THE BUILD-UP With just five wins under their belts all season and only two games left in January, the Pilgrims were in another relegation scrap. The previous couple of days had seen a pre-match supporter's meeting with James Brent at the Guildhall; a rare home victory against play-off hopefuls Burton Albion; the loan signing of Joe Lennox from Bristol City; and a returning of the old guard when Paul Wotton re-signed for the Greens whirlwind, to say the least. Sitting inside the relegation zone on goal difference, the Pilgrims knew that a result against Crawley would be a huge boost to their Football EFL survival. Unfortunately, they were coming up against a side that had lost only once in 17 league games, winning 11 of those. With the Red Devils one point off top spot, hot on the heels of Southend United, Argyle's manager Carl Fletcher was well and truly up against it.. THE MATCH Argyle opened the first half the better side but Steve Evans' side took the lead seconds before the referee put the whistle to his mouth to signify half-time, Pablo Mills latching onto the end of the of a free-kick. The second half was frustrating viewing for the Argyle faithful, the Greens not really being able to get a foothold in the game, and, with time ticking down, it looked like the Pilgrims were set for another fruitless Saturday. With one last roll of the dice, Argyle won a corner. With the box packed, the ball in found its path to Paul Wotton on the edge of the box. Wottsy chipped it back in to centre-back Maxime Blanchard, who scored a lastminute equaliser - with an overhead kick. Jubilation in the stands. Argyle had snatched a point and, most importantly, were out of the relegation zone. THE SCORER Maxime Blanchard arrived at Argyle on a free transfer following his release from Tranmere Rovers in 2011. Whilst with the Greens, Max made 115 appearances for Argyle and scored four goals, his first in English football coming against today's visitors in the first ever Home Park fixture between the Red Devils and the Pilgrims. The French centre-back also picked up the prestigious Player of the Season award from the club in 2012 after forming a solid partnership with Darren Purse. With the managerial departure of Carl Fletcher and following a squad shakeup by John Sheridan in 2014, Max was released by the club and found himself in Ireland playing for Shamrock Rovers for a season. After a solitary game for Newport County, Max retired from professional football. POP CULTURE Rising from eighth place to topple Flo Rida's Good Feeling off the UK singles charts was Jessie J's Domino. The must-see film on the big screen was Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, while American Pie Reunion went straight to the top of the UK DVD charts.
