We all know someone – a friend, family member, or coworker – who usually looks at the downside of situations. They may say things like, “That is so stupid,” “She is so ugly,” “It’s not my fault, it’s theirs,” “He will always be a loser,” “They made me do it,” “It’s hopeless,” or “I give up”.
Such people can be very critical and unpleasant to be around. Whether they are making fun of a person’s outfit, blaming the teacher after they have failed a test, or predicting a terrible weekend when things don’t go their way, it can be enough to make you run away. People who are negative often play the victim and do not take responsibility for their own attitudes and behaviours.
It is likely that negative people have deep fears about themselves that come up in a variety of ways. Often, they are judgmental. For instance, they see a child throwing a tantrum and think that the mother is a terrible parent. Negative people are often demanding and put pressure on others to do things perfectly. This can extend to being controlling. For example, having strong opinions about what their

Manitoba’s delegation to the Philippines, headed by Minister of Labour and Immigration Jon Reyes, tasked to recruit Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) and other healthcare professionals, continues to create strong interest among the IENs and other associated groups in the country.
The delegation, which arrived in Manila on February 18, has already met with Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Susan “Toots” Ople and other government officials in the health and labour sectors.
In the first week, Reyes was joined by Monika Warren, of Shared Health (Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Operating Officer, Clinical Change Services) and Ken Borce, an IEN,

spouse or children wear, eat or how they behave. This is because they are insecure about their own abilities and how the world looks at them. They can also be pessimistic, predicting failure or negative results when there is no evidence that it will happen.
Negative people often avoid opening up in social settings like meetings or parties because they are afraid that what they say will be “used against them.” This can lead to boring conversations and “surface” relationships.
Although this type of person can be difficult to be around, we often keep them in our lives because either we care for them or we don’t have a choice (for example, a supervisor).
Talking to negative people can leave us feeling uncomfortable, stressed, and even angry. We can sometimes doubt ourselves and start to experience anxiety. So, what can we do about this kind of situation? We cannot control others; we only have power over our own thoughts and actions.
Here are some ways to deal with negative people effectively:
1. Try to provide support and be a compassionate listener.
Sometimes, the person can just be having a bad day. They do

Canada to hire more Filipino healthcare workers
MANILA – Manitoba Minister of Labour and Immigration Jon Reyes has expressed interest in hiring more skilled Filipino health professionals under a new program that would financially support Filipino nurses.
Said program would include the provision of airfare, accommodation, and training, among others.

not normally blame and criticize others or look at the glass as half empty. By hearing their story, you can help them to feel better. However, if the person is negative most of the time, it is time to change your strategy.
2. Don’t buy into the negativity.
Joining in and agreeing with the person’s statements will only leave you feeling awful afterwards. Worse, if someone else overhears you, they might label you as a negative person. Don’t respond to their attempts to engage you in this way of thinking. Simply use short answers like “oh” and “I see.” They should soon get the message that you don’t agree.
3. Avoid confronting them or advising them to change their ways. Listen without judgment. Most people don’t take criticism well and people who are already negative will not have a good reaction to constructive feedback. If there is an indication that they might be open to what you have to say, deliver your opinion in a gentle, respectful way from a place of genuine concern. It usually does not help to outright criticize a criticizer.
4. Role model positivity. Compliment that person and
Ople on Wednesday, the two officials agreed on furthering labour cooperation between the Philippines and the Canadian province, especially in the recruitment of Filipino nurses and other healthcare professionals.
The proposed scholarship fund for Filipino nursing students who wish to work in Canada was also discussed during the meeting.
The Philippine Embassy in Canada said that as of April 2018, there are around 901,218 Filipinos working and staying in Canada, which comprises almost 2.6 per cent of its national population.
The embassy added that the Philippines continues to be the top source of immigrants to Canada, followed by India, China, and Iran.

others around you. Saying things like “you did a great job” and “that was nice of you to do that” will leave them feeling better about themselves. They may then start to adopt a kinder way to behave. Also, be sure of your own good qualities. If you are more confident yourself, you won’t be as upset when you hear negative comments. You’ll be able to respond with confidence. For example, the person might say, “I don’t think you should take that job.” You might want to lash out and say, “You never support me!” or “Why do you have to bring me down?” However, being sure of yourself and your choices might lead you to respond instead with, “I think this will be a good change for me.”
5. Encourage them to look at the bright side.
After someone tells you about his or her awful experience or how someone else is to blame for what happened, respond by saying, “What did you learn from that situation?” or “What do you think you would do differently next time?” This encourages them to realize that they have power to change things for the better, and that they are not helpless.
For some people, making negative comments can be a cry
for help. Underneath, they may be feeling pain, sadness, or anger, and they don’t know how to recognize or communicate these emotions in a healthy way. Sometimes people have been abused or have very low self-confidence. If they are showing signs of depression or you are worried that they might hurt themselves, offer to get them to professional help as soon as possible. Always be respectful and show patience. You could be helping that person more than you realize.
6. If the relationship is toxic or abusive and starts to lower your self-esteem, walk away.
Having healthy boundaries with people is important to our wellness. When negative adults cross the line and start to be disrespectful to you, remember that you are not responsible for changing or helping them.
Let go of negative people. They only show up to share complaints, problems, disastrous stories, fear, and judgment on others. If somebody is looking for a bin to throw all their trash into, make sure it’s not in your mind.”

For years we have been counselling Canadian sponsors on the advantages and disadvantages of sponsoring spouses or partners from inside Canada. One of the major advantages is that you can submit an open permit application for the spouse/partner when you submit the sponsorship application from inside Canada. A spousal work permit allows your partner/spouse to work in Canada while awaiting the decision on the sponsorship submission. It is a way to normalize life for couples when they are both inside Canada. This year, Canada is expecting to welcome 82,000 new permanent residents under spousal partner and children sponsorship programs. It can take over a year for the processing of the sponsorship submission, but your spouse or partner will be able to obtain the Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) in considerably less time. The open work permit option is a plus for couples inside the country.
Potential applicants do not need to find an eligible employer with an approved Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). You

do not even require a job offer to apply under the provision. The requirement, however, is that the submission is made in concert with an in-Canada spousal or common-law partner sponsorship submission or can be submitted when or if the in-Canada principal applicant has a work permit or study permit.
The foreign spouses inside the country must have valid temporary resident status as a visitor, student, or worker. The applicant and sponsor must meet all eligibility and admission requirements at time of submission. This also applies to spouses/partners of post graduate work permit (PGWP) holders.
The SOWP is a positive step but only for those in status.
In the short term, the SOWP allows your partner to enter the Canadian work permit and obtain valuable experience. The open work permit also serves the second purpose of giving your partner status inside the country. It takes the place of the visitor visa, for example, that many of the visiting partners may have. In addition, it allows couples to live together

while they await the decision on their sponsorship submission. These are all advantages in terms of couples adjusting to living together in Canada and unifying families. Working in Canada gives the foreign partner a chance to improve their English or French language skills, gain practical experience and establish professional and social networks.
The length of the SOWP depends upon many factors. It is important to be aware that applicants must always be in status so ensure that you apply for extension when and where you can. The processing of your permanent residence may take longer than you expect. It is important for first-time applicants to ensure that they have renewed their passports, otherwise they may be in for a bad surprise when the permit returns with the expiration date on the old or existing passport. The applicants should be aware that normally there is no extension on the PGWP, so take the time out to understand your options. We aware of expiration dates and

the changing requirements for SOWP.
One recent change concerns spouses and partners of foreign workers who apply for open work permits. As of January 2023, most foreign workers can apply for an Open Work Permit regardless if the principal applicant is working in a skilled occupation TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 or a semi-skilled occupation or TEER 4 or 5. This represents a major change and loosening of requirements. You may be eligible for this temporary measure, which applies to both spouses and partners inside and outside of Canada. You must be
included as a dependent in the principal applicant’s permanent residence application before you submit your open work permit application.

People Power Revolution commemorated under Marcos Jr.’s presidency
The Philippines on February 25 marked the 37th anniversary of the People Power Revolution that ended the two-decade rule of the late President Ferdinand Marcos, Sr., father and namesake of the incumbent leader.
A commemorative event was held in the morning at the EDSA People Power Monument along EDSA corner White Plains in Quezon City, with the theme, EDSA 2023: Pagkakaisa Tungo sa Kapayapaan at Pagbangon.
The celebration was led by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), in coordination with the Spirit of EDSA Foundation (SOEF), Quezon City Government, and other groups and government agencies.
Among the officials present were Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, NHCP chair Rene Escalante and Christopher Carrion of the SOEF.
A holy mass was offered at 10:00 a.m. at the Archdiocesan Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace at the EDSA Shrine.
President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. said in a statement that he is “one with the nation in remembering those times of tribulation and how we came out of them united and stronger as a nation.”
It is the first time the Philippines is commemorating the EDSA Revolution under a Marcos presidency following the election last year of the younger
Marcos.
Marcos Jr. referred to that “time in our history” as one “that divided the Filipino people.”
“I once again offer my hand of reconciliation to those with different political persuasions to come together as one in forging a better society – one that will pursue progress and peace and a better life for all Filipinos,” he said.
The president had initially declared Saturday, February 25, as a special non-working day, but moved it a day earlier. According to his latest proclamation, “The celebration of EDSA People Power Revolution Anniversary may be moved from February 25 to 24 provided the historical significance of the EDSA People Power Revolution is maintained.”
On the eve of the People Power anniversary, Marcos Jr. was in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte for the Tan-ok ni Ilocano: Festival of Festivals. He was not present at the People Power Monument on Saturday, but he sent a wreath for the occasion.
Marcos, Jr., who will serve until 2028, had previously defended his father’s imposition of Martial Law from 1972 until 1981.
Remembering the Filipino people’s heroism
The February 25, 1986, EDSA People Power Revolution was the culmination of protests against the administration of Marcos Sr. that was marred by
corruption and human rights violation during the Martial Law imposition from 1972.
“It showcased to the world the remarkable resolve of the Filipino people” and “heralded an era of peace,” according to the Official Gazette, the country’s official journal.
The peaceful revolt installed Corazon “Cory” Aquino, widow of the assassinated Marcos political nemesis Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr., into the presidency. She would later be hailed as an icon of democracy.
“Today, we remember the heroism of the Filipino people who fought to end the Marcos dictatorship, thus restoring democracy in our country,” the Aquino family said in a statement.
“The EDSA People Power Revolution showed the world that it was possible for a courageous and truly unified people to reclaim the freedom that a dictatorship had denied them. We believe that the indomitable spirit exemplified by one Filipino nation 37 years ago remains alive to this very day,” they added.
“It is the same spirit that guards and protects our democracy, confronting those who attempt to deceive us and undermine our rights and liberties.”
The official program at the People Power Monument concluded with the playing of a medley of Isang Lahi and

I familiarized myself with Roselle’s role in order to prepare for the right nuances of the character.”

hamong dala ang pagiging ama especially on setting a good example to your daughters. It’s especially difficult to devote family time when you juggle several roles. Pero kapag anak mo na ‘yung pinag-uusapan, you can sacrifice everything for them.”
Completing the star-studded cast are Klea Pineda, Abdul Raman, Saviour Ramos, Ronnie Lazaro, and Nova Villa.
AraBella follows the story of a loving mother, Roselle, who searches for her lost daughter. Even though it has already been 10 years since her child was kidnapped, Roselle still believes that they will be reunited.
The show’s director Adolf Alix Jr. guarantees that AraBella will deliver something new and special to the audience, “I think the journey is quite familiar and relatable.. the twist and turns of how Roselle takes the chance for Ara and Bella challenges our notion of being a woman, a mother and our traditional family system.”
Catch the world premiere of AraBella this March 6. Viewers abroad can also catch the program via GMA Pinoy TV.

Nakakalungkot at nakakayamot.
No questions asked,
Love thy parents, protect our health services!
Paano ba maging magulang? What it is like to a parent? Ang sabi ng isang novelist na si Nicholas Sparks: “Being a parent is one of the hardest things you will ever do but in exchange, it teaches you the meaning of unconditional love.”
Love thy parents, protect our health services!
