Why From Chief Editor's Desk TM Jitender Balani, CC Chief Editor, "The GIST"

The characteristics of Pimpri Toastmasters Club (PTMC) resembles that of natural element "Water". The club demonstrates uninterrupted flow, flexibility to shape itself with circumstances, quenches thirst of wanderers - seeking leadership & communication skills, and lastly it refines by pulling off impurities to richness through personality & skill development. This defines its very existence, as a necessity in every individual's life. PTMC has now reached it's "Boiling Point" at 100th Chapter Meeting, where it will gradually change its phase to generate steam. PTMC in its new phase will continue to empower it's members to deliver speeches and perform leadership roles excellently. Energy in each member will propel other members to transfer power and drive the engine to reach its mission and vision. While we aim to drive turbines in future, we cannot forget those who engineered it and ignited the fuel that allowed us to boil & achieve self-sustainability.The Newsletter "The GIST" reflects the gist of each member, each element & contributors to the position where we are now. I take this opportunity to thank every member of PTMC for creating memories and also to the newsletter team who put their efforts to gather them. ENJOY !

At Boiling Point From President's Desk TM Nujahad Kulkarni, CL President, Jul - Dec 18 When someone offers you an opportunity and you are not sure you can do it, say yes and then learn how to do it. This is the quote that summarizes the start to my presidential term. When I got to know that I had been elected as President of PTMC ExCom team, I suddenly got cold feet. I had been away from Toastmasters for 3 months and my mind was flooded with doubts. When our ExCom team met for the first time, their energy and enthusiasm was just the kick start I needed to overcome all my doubts. The best part about our team was that each and every member has gone above and beyond the mandated responsibilities of their roles. I am grateful to our senior members, Area Director, Division Director, club mentors and sponsors for being the lighthouse when we needed guidance. This term, we are already selected Distinguished Club, which is the fastest for PTMC till date. I am sure we will continue the legacy of awards in this year too. Our greatest achievement has been the emergence of new members as leaders. I thank each and every member for their support and helping me overcome all the challenges that came in this journey.

"Don't think too much before taking the first step" 5

DTM Niteash Agarwaal

From Club Growth Director

Over the years in Toastmasters, I was kind of surprised, why the old PCMC side of the area had only one community club. The club did produce leaders and contestants, but somewhere we all failed to utilize the true potential of the program and spread our wings in the area. With the IT culture booming, the real estate market picked up like anything. Wherever you’d go, you would see construction happening and people moving in. Many gated communities and townships have come up in the area in the last 5 years. This still didn’t help us spread our wings. The opening of Pimpri Toastmasters Club delighted me. Finally, we had another community club and I felt that this is the breakthrough we were looking for. The club is celebrating its 100th meeting and in two years we were able to reach out in this unexplored area and found gems who are shining in Toastmasters and contributing in the best possible way to flourish our community. We still have a lot of lives left to touch. On this special occasion of 100th milestone meeting & newsletter release, I ask commitment in following three areas, 1) Have more than 40 members and I urge everyone to bring their friends and acquaintances to this wonderful community of people and try opening a community club in their vicinity or society. 2) Toastmasters have been around for more than 94 years and we haven’t even scratched the surface. As we are growing, we need you to volunteer as sponsor, mentor, club coach and role players for other events of the community. 3) Live the brand and its values and embrace the culture by living up to the Toastmasters promise we take, when we become a member. Eager to meet you and hear your wonderful stories. All the best in your journey!

"Commitment is the first step towards growth" 6

From Division Director TM Seema Rani, CC, ALS

Celebrating 100th milestone meeting is a great achievement for a club. For Pimpri Toastmasters Club to reach this milestone has been rewarding as it has led to impact many lives positively. I have attended few meetings at Pimpri Toastmasters Club and I find enthusiasm each time, the efforts that all the ExCom and role players put in, to conduct the meeting in the best possible way, is inspiring. I believe by 100th meeting, Pimpri Toastmasters club is 100% more confident, 100% stronger and has 100% better speakers and leaders. A member's growth in a club is majorly dependent on two factors - quality meetings and growing beyond the club. In Pimpri Toastmasters Club I have seen all members growing by leaps and bounds in both factors. PTMC has achieved "Diamond Club Award" in its first year itself this shows dedication and efforts to make member's growth a priority. They have given speech champions, amazing leaders as Area Director, Division Director, Convener for Eloquence 2019 and many more. Members have shown this growth by learning from educational sessions, by achieving the "Triple Crown Award", "Toastmasters of the Year" and by participating and contributing towards District, Division and Area events. Club has gone beyond club activities and have given back to the society in their own style. I wish Pimpri Toastmasters Club many more milestones, growth and passion to change more lives positively Keep Shining and Keep Smiling !!!

"Continue to contribute beyond the club activities for the society" 7

Setting An Example From Area Director TM Harshad Kheira, CC, ALB I am very happy to be associated with PTMC as Area Director and I can see wonderful growth not only in numbers but actual growth in development of club and its members. Milestone is not just a number but it tells us that together we can achieve more and PTMC is a wonderful example to prove that. All members contribute towards growth and participate actively in club meetings, are going beyond the club for Area and Division Contest. What one needs more than a warm welcoming environment and homely feeling. The amount of respect club members have for members from other clubs or guests is wonderful and I always feel happy to interact with members and am more than happy to see that all are open to improvements and feedback which is wonderful sign for any club. Strength of PTMC lies in its member’s involvement and keeping the meeting alive. Club environment is really good for anyone to attend and feel good about meeting. Also, unique ideas keep meetings unique all the time. Club is for the members, by the members' and Wish you all a "Happy 100th Milestone Meeting" and good luck for many more milestones to go. I also request members to take leadership role within club ExCom and at district level to take the club towards incremental and exponential growth.

"Strength of PTMC lies in its member’s involvement and keeping the meeting alive"

Exclusive Interview with Division Director, Division C TM Seema Rani, CC, ALS With 13+ years of work experience in professional world you have played both technical as well as leadership roles. What made you consider joining Toastmasters International? I considered Toastmasters to improve my communication skills by working on my pronunciation and vocabulary. However after joining, I have figured out many more areas to improve from both leadership and communication track so am working on making a better version of myself.

How does association with Toastmasters International facilitate an individual in transformation of roles? Diversity, you get to learn from people from all walks of life. Attending Toastmasters meetings and interacting with so many people with different perspective not only helps professionally but personally as well.

According to you, what enables a club to achieve its mission and fulfils the responsibilities towards its members and how can a member contribute towards its club success? As mentioned by District Director DTM Ravi Teja during panel discussion at division conference, if each member is inducted into the program correctly and each one is ready to fullfil the promises taken, club will have no boundaries to be successful.

"If each member is inducted into the program correctly and each one is ready to fulfill the promises taken, club will have no boundaries to be successful"

PTMC has achieved its 100th milestone meeting without missing a single meeting. How does the path change here on? What will it take for PTMC to achieve & sustain President Distinguished Club award? Regular meeting is the base to achieve any goal for a member or club. You are on right path, embracing the new education program whole heartily and to treat each member (old or new) with same focus will lead to stay on top of the chart.

"Any role in Toastmasters International is different from real time roles as it gives you experiential learning without being at the edge or putting lots of money at stake." During the recent Humorous & Evaluation contest at Area Level, you stated that Time Management is the key aspect that allows you to manage personal & professional life. What habits one should follow to prioritise the activities and handle multiple roles? There are many techniques but ‘The Eisenhower Matrix’ helps me stay focused and to manage time. You may have to work little extra to use it every time at the start but slowly it will becomes a habit. Another one is planning on a monthly basis along with daily planning by using above matrix or Kanban board (visual board with to- do, in progress and done column), which I have at my home for keeping my plans in front of my eyes.

How is the leadership role of Division Director in Toastmaster International different from any role of CEO or board of director in any organisation?

Your motto in life is to bring out the best in individuals and teams. How do you apply this through your role as Division C Director – Toastmasters International Interesting one. Being a coach it’s the one and only responsibility I hold. Being Division Director it becomes bit easier as Toastmasters International provides many opportunities for us to display or understand our potential and improve. So I believe delegation and giving as many opportunities to each and every member in division C to perform various roles at various events or occasions, certainly helps to bring out best in each.

Exclusive Interview with Area Director, Division C How has your journey with Toastmasters International been so far? What motivated you to look beyond and serve as Area Director? I am happy to share that, my journey with Toastmaster International so far is full of learning and I see better version of myself than I was earlier. First is, belief and support from members of club that empowered me to go for this role and second is, I wanted to challenge myself to achieve things which I felt can be done at Area Director level which may help clubs and district to grow and be a bridge between club and district and third is, self-development and continuous learning in leadership path to know my capacity beyond club. You have played various leadership roles in Toastmasters International. What is your leadership mantra? I always feel it is all about the leadership team, if you work with people you will succeed and grow together. So my mantra is “Learn together, Shine together”. I also agree that you can’t make everyone happy but my mantra is yes, we may not make everyone happy but we can definitely make a difference.

TM Harshad Kheira, CC, ALB "Learn Together & Shine Together is my leadership mantra when it comes to playing multiple leadership roles" How has your experience with PTMC, it's leaders & members been so far? I feel such a positive environment whenever I visit PTMC. The wonderful part is I can correlate this even before I became Area Director. On my visit to PTMC I got a warm welcome as member/guest and it is the same after becoming Area Director. Members and leaders are very helpful and respectful for anyone who visits. I always have some take away from the meeting and I always like leaders of PTMC as they always look for feedback by connecting after meeting to ensure club is improving.

"As of now most of the members are only focused towards attending respective club meetings, this inter-club relation may add to selfsustainable aim."

What according to you does it take for any club to be self-sustainable? Is it realistic to aim for being selfsustainable? If yes, then how and what is the responsibility of its leaders & members? Yes, it is a realistic aim according to me. Toastmasters International has given wonderful foundation and if clubs follows those foundation guidelines and members follow membership promise, leaders get trained on duties which they need to perform in leadership role and creating successor in each term will ensure we create self-sustainable club. Also, members visiting other clubs may help to know culture of the different club and the best practices. As of now most of the members are only focused towards attending respective club meetings, this inter-club relation may add to self-sustainable aim.

PTMC has achieved its 100th milestone meeting without missing a single meeting. How does the path change here on? What will it take for PTMC to achieve & sustain President Distinguished Club award? I see club leaders are doing their duties at best by following all guidelines, club success plans are prepared and shared well in advance which ensures that DCP is on track for the club. I am sure PTMC will achieve President Distinguished Club Award based on club success plan and with current 7 DCP points already achieved. To sustain this award for long term, club needs to look proactively on club success plan so that progress can be tracked.

Leo Connect Late.TM Leo Paulose, is always an inspiration for all of us and that reflects from the message that Toastmasters connect with him Every time I interacted with Leo, the conversation always ended with Leo saying "Let me know if any help is required". Because of this, in my leadership journey, I always had this feeling that there is someone who will be there for me if I get into any problem. His absence will always be a big void for me.

TM Vijendra Jain Leo was not just good friend of mine but guiding star. He made me believe that we have so much to do in life and in Toastmasters. I was the only person who would tease him and he would just laugh. Miss him everyday for his way of doing great things, connecting with people and tremendous work he did in Toastmasters.

TM Pramod Kiwande

I have met Leo twice. I was mesmerised with the way he shook hand to greet us with all positive words by looking straight into eyes with a big smile on face. I aspire to become like him.

TM Amruta Pandharkar

Sometimes in life, you meet people who touch your soul. They are so lively, their presence is so enchanting that your energy gets raised to a high level. They need not speak a word to you, just their glowing eyes and smiling face fills you with immense inspiration and motivation to get going and that was Leo.

TM Aashirwad Gupta Leo was a role model to me. He was a great orator and leader. The thing I liked about him was his humility and his ability to connect with everyone.

TM Nujahad Kulkarni

TM Amruta Pandharkar

To define, Acceptance is welcoming people, things, situations as they are. It is needed for self-peace as all these are not in our control. Life teaches us to accept many things such as accept that you cannot do all things, accept that certain people have left from your life, accept the failures and keep working, special child needs to accept that he/she is differently abled. Acceptance is very important. If we don’t accept, then we stuck there, keep on asking ‘why me? I don’t deserve this or I am not supposed to suffer and struggle and get back nothing. Not accepting things is one of the biggest mental blocks in one's happiness. Person needs to play with his/her thoughts and beliefs to learn and accepting things. Rain falls down without caring whether land wants to accepts it or not. It just falls and the land always accepts it and notifies the acceptance by spreading beautiful smell. When your intentions are right and heart is pure, you are always accepted. Just be yourself. No matter how different you are, no matter how different or out of place you feel, there is one thing life teaches you, that thing is ‘acceptability’ and it is from both sides. You get to accept people for what they are and people accept you for what you are. The very first thing you need to check is ‘do you accept yourself the way you are?’

If not, accept yourself for what you are and love yourself for what you do. 17

Exclusive Interview with TM Nitin Mane 1st Runner-up for Humorous Speech Contest at Area Level TM Nitin Mane Give us a brief background about your journey with Toastmasters? In my office, there was a demo meeting about Toastmasters International where I was introduced about it. So I searched online and attended Pimpri Toastmasters Club as guest in Jan 2018 and joined from 1st March and my purpose was to overcome the fear of public speaking.

"Anytime during the day a point/incident struck my mind, I used to jot it down in the diary"

You made PTMC club & its members proud by winning the 1st position at club level for Humorous Speech Contest 2018? How did you feel representing PTMC at Area Level?

According to you, how is Humorous Speech different than the regular speeches? What preparation you did before the contest?

I never expected that I will win at club level contest because I was contesting against legends like TM Vijendra, TM Aashirwad, and TM Jitender. So I felt very proud that I got a chance to represent PTMC at Area Level.

Yes, it is different than regular speeches because in regular speech you prepare speech according to objectives given in manuals but in humours speech along with objectives you also have to make sure that your speech will be admired by audience. It took two weeks for me to write and practice the speech. Anytime during the day a point/incident struck to my mind, I used to jot it down in the diary.

Does humour comes naturally to you or does it require a thorough preparation to deliver the punch timely? Yes, sometimes humour comes naturally to me. I use it judiciously so that it doesn’t hurt anyone. But delivering a humorous speech for 5 to 7 minutes takes a lot of preparation.

Continued... 18

"If you want to participate in humorous speech contest make sure that you prepare a speech for 6.30 minutes and keep 45 seconds extra for audience to laugh and enjoy your speech" Was the preparation different when you contested at Area Level? Yes, It was. The feedback and suggestion from TM Aashirwad, TM Vijendra, TM Nujahad & My mentor TM Amruta made my speech more entertaining than before. I got many new punches and strategies like when to take pause, how to bring voice modulations. I prepared more compared to my preparation for club contest. This was the first time you participated in the contest and qualified for area level contest. How did you counter the pressure of the big stage? It was not easy to deliver a speech on a big stage with 60+ audience and all were facing me. To counter the pressure, I stood outside the auditorium while other participants were delivering their speech. But, main reason I was able to deliver my speech because TM Pramod and Vijendra guided me very well about contest location and also shared a few tips which helped me a lot to understand the advantages of delivering a speech at big stage.

What message would you like to convey to other fellow toastmasters when it comes to writing a humorous speech? If you want to participate in humours speech contest make sure that you prepare a speech for 6.30 minutes and keep 45 seconds extra for audience to laugh and enjoy your speech. Practice at home in front of the mirror. Ask your mentor, friends, family members to evaluate your speech and provide suggestions to improve the speech delivering and timing. One cannot write a complete speech at one go, so one needs to start as early as possible.

Exclusive Interview with TM Vagish Pandey 1st Runner-up for Evaluation Speech Contest at Area Level Share a brief background about your journey with Toastmasters? I've been a part of Toastmasters International ever since I joined Syntel Pune Toastmasters Club in 2017. My purpose of joining Toastmasters International was to get over my stage fear and improving my skills of dealing with people and task delegation. You made PTMC club & its members proud by winning 1st position at club level for Evaluation contest 2018? How did you feel representing PTMC club at Area Level? It was honestly a surprise for me when I won the Evaluation Contest at Club Level, as I have been known to be someone who is a bit too critical and blunt with feedback. Therefore, I was very nervous yet excited to represent the club at Area Level.

TM Vagish Vandana Pandey, CC, CL

"A good evaluation is one which helps speaker in gaining useful insights to evolve themselves as a competent and confident communicator" The most important aspect to remember is that a good evaluation isn't the one which covers all the points mentioned in a sample “good speech or the one which uses fancy language and verbal tools. A good evaluation is the one which helps speaker in gaining useful insights to evolve themselves as competent and confident communicator.

According to you what are the key aspects for evaluating a speech? What does it take to evaluate a speech critically yet effectively and impactful? While evaluating a speech it is important to keep in mind all the aspects of a good speech, right from body language to content of the speech. This is slightly tricky, as different types of speeches call for different types of content, voice modulations, and body language, for example an informative speech might not require as chirpy tone as is for a humorous speech. Further, sometimes one might have to prioritise the recommendations and commendations.

Continued... 20

What effort you put in to prepare before the contest & during the contest? I listened to various speeches of Toastmasters International's world Champions over the years and tried to understand the methods they used to turn their speeches into winning orations. Then, I thought of ways to best explain each of these aspects to a target speaker.

How should one prepare for the evaluation contest? There is no correct or definite way to prepare oneself for an evaluation contest. Each evaluator has his or her specialities and weakness. A good approach towards a contest is to concentrate on the weak points in order to improve them, and simultaneously work on polishing the strong points. For example, as mentioned earlier, while i am good at recommending someone, but I'm not well known to commend someone and hence I practised on ways to balance out the two.

A good approach towards a contest is to concentrate on the weak points in order to improve them, and simultaneously work on polishing the strong points" This was the first time you participated for the contest and qualified for area level contest. How did you counter the pressure of big stage? I have a long standing five step strategy of dealing with pressure. Step 1: Prepare, so that you have confidence. Step 2: dress well for the occasion, as appearance is something which matters a bit in carrying the confidence. Step 3: ensure that you have friends seated near the stage who would smile and encourage you when you speak on the stage. Step 4: take deep breaths and calm yourself by remembering that everything is a learning process and the true purpose of this contest is to learn and improve. Step 5: go on the stage, see a large audience, and panic anyways. After all it's been proven that our brain tends to work better under short span of pressure.

Experience @ PTMC

TM Saurabh Sinha

New to Pune, I always thought of the best learning experience opportunities after my work life. I had known Toastmasters International from colleagues at Jamshedpur,Tata Motors. I was searching for avenues to enhance my leadership skills, and landed up at Pimpri Toastmasters Club for the 1st guest meeting in early July 18. I opted Dynamic Leadership under Pathways and started off with my first Ice breaker speech recently. I am privileged to get support from my mentor TM Aashirwad Gupta, who is a dynamic person and a brilliant speaker. It would not have been possible to join the club, without the persuasion from our Madam President, TM Nujahad Kulkarni who helped me to understand how club has changed her thought process and enhanced her skills to take up challenging roles. I am also indebted to our VP Education TM Amruta, who helped me in planning my time and gave me extremely convincing ideas on how to priorities my daily routine. I am really privileged to get into network of such beautiful minds. I dream to be a successful toastmaster with the support and guidance of this family.

I have visited couple of other Toastmasters Cub before joining PTMC. The reason to choose PTMC is because of the enthusiastic team as well as punctuality in the meetings. I feel the same enthusiasm in every club meeting since last seven months of association. Club members are friendly and encouraged me to achieve my Level 1 milestone in Pathways. My mentor TM Amruta as well as Excom team has motivated me to take many roles in club meetings. These roles have played a pivotal role in improving time management, listening, evaluation and leadership skills. Thank you PTMC!!

TM Mahesh Barband

I attended Pimpri Toastmasters Club for the first time as a guest and by the end of the meeting, the Club President asked me for the feedback in front of the audience. That time i was so nervous, that i could barely talk. My heart beat raced like horse and on the very same day I decided to join the Toastmaster Club. This club has given me enough self confidence to speak in front of audience with normal heart beat. Thanks to Pimpri Toastmasters Club.

Experience @ PTMC Overall my experience at PTMC has been awesome. I loved the way overall program is designed. Program is conducted in a very professional way. Selection of topics is very unique and creative. I think, I have long way to go with PTMC. There is lots to learn from my mentor and other Toastmasters.

TM Arvind Gupta I have recently joined Toastmasters Club, since I wanted to overcome the stage fear. I feel this is the right platform for me to overcome it. I chose PTMC, as I feel the atmosphere here is very friendly and supportive. All members encourage and motivate each other. I joined just one month back and I have started taking small roles. When I played my first role it was a great experience because all members encouraged me just to boost my confidence. TM Vaghish Vandana is my mentor and she is very supportive and guides me whenever I need her help. After attending around 6 meetings in PTMC, I am sure of achieving my target of becoming a confident speaker.

TM Chhaya Ghadage

It is indeed a pleasant journey for me. Toastmasters gives a great platform for public speaking and enhancing my leadership qualities. My journey with Toastmasters has been interesting so far. Initially, I was nervous while playing assigned roles, later on became more and more comfortable with the proceedings. My mentor always motivates me to do activities in a different manner which helps me a lot in personal development.

TM Shyam Patil I knew about toastmasters for long but never had courage to join despite many pushes from my close friend TM Sujata Ramani. Somehow I showed courage and joined Toastmasters to improve my communication and leadership skills. My first speech on stage made me realise that I am on right platform to fill empty spot with skills inside me. When I got to know the name of mentor I felt that I have to take next step of improvement very quickly and reach to next level as soon as possible to give respect to mentor, and her name is our Madam President TM Nujahad Kulkarni. She is supportive and directing me to achieve the purpose behind joining toastmasters. Thanks to her and everyone who is associated with PTMC. Feel like I have started my journey towards my dream which will come true soon.

Safety Pin ! TM Vagish Vandana Pandey, CC, CL

For me, words are like Safety Pins, When used properly they can hold fraying shreds of my life together But my lack of patience leads them to achieve a different goal altogether For me words are like Safety Pins, I find them while digging in my past, Always ready to open and prick me with the memories that last, Yet Alas, When I search for them frantically in what seems the vast abyss, They vanish or get intertwined in my hurry to use them at last And hence I say, To me words are like Safety Pins !

Phase Change From President Elect TM Aashirwad Gupta, ACB, CL President Elect, Jan - Jun 19

100 is always a special number. A milestone of the journey which came as a result of mammoth efforts by the previous ExCom team and the contribution of time, speeches, roles, and encouragement, by the members of Pimpri Toastmasters Club and from the Toastmasters Family across the globe. Being the President for the next tenure of the club, it defaults me with the responsibilities of being the representative face of the club wherever I go. However, I am of the opinion, that this club hasn't grown because of one person. This club stands because of its members who have always stood ahead and gave their wholehearted efforts for any task they took in hand. As the President for the next tenure, I promise to put my capabilities for the club and its members' overall growth. How? Just 6 words, Let's all grow and shine together. Let's all work together to excel on our communication and leadership journey. Let's all grab, gather, and generate, ample opportunities so that all of us grow resulting in the growth of this beautiful club. Let's all carry the pride and be the face of Pimpri Toastmasters Club, together !

For those who have an eye on my wallet !

TM Jitender Balani, CC

For those who have an eye on my wallet, I have no complaints For those who spoil me for their interest, I don’t blame…. For the fact that I know problem lies inside Since my gross habits and net income do not reconcile….. For those who manipulate me, subconsciously, I appreciate…. As they display my wants and needs as twins, which I can’t differentiate For those who taught me maths in school, were many… Only to learn the fact, I know multiplying numbers not money For those who told me time is money, so keep saving…. But the fact is, we only talked about it, did nothing For those who care, whether I am alive or dead, are few…. As they rise only when my credit card is overdue... I know.. you still have an eye on my wallet but you will get nothing this time. As I have shifted from physical wallet to a digital one in no time..

FOR THOSE WHO HAVE AN EYE ON MY WALLET!
