PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious God, you sent your son who died and was raised to new life that death might end and that we might live a new life in Him. Yet we confess that we too often have chosen to remain captive to doubt and fear and ways that lead to death.

By our thoughts, words, and actions, we have scorned your love, diminished the lives of others, and defaced your image in us. Forgive us for Jesus’ sake, and enable us by His resurrection power to live no longer for ourselves but for Him who died and rose again for us. Amen.

April 18 – Partisan Faith: The Church in an Age of Polarization There has been a good bit written about how divided our country is and how this threatens our democracy. These two sessions will explore how polarization threatens the church (and faith) and explore ways the church can productively respond so that faith informs faith participation in civic life. This forum will be led by Dr. David True, Associate Professor of Religion at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.

His research interests grow out of his interest in Reformed faith and culture. He coedited the book Paradoxical Virtue: Reinhold Niebuhr and the Virtue Tradition (Routledge 2020). He has written on theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, political fundamentalism, just war theory, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. True is a member minister of the Presbytery of Carlisle and has served congregations in McLean and Richmond, Virginia.

April 25; May 2, 9 – What God Has Done: God’s Work in Christ and the Sacraments We welcome to our Sunday Insight Forums the Rev. Dr. Fred Anderson, former pastor of Pine Street Presbyterian Church. From 1978 to 1991, he served as pastor of Pine Street and is noted for having led Pine Street to adopt the practice of the weekly celebration of the Lord’s Supper. Dr. Anderson has engaged in a life-long quest to understand the atoning work of Christ. An in-depth study of this important teaching began when a faithful church member asked him, “Fred, what does Jesus’ death on the cross have to do with me? How does that save me?” In this series of classes, Dr. Anderson will share his powerful understanding of Christ’s atoning work and its implications for the sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper. We warmly welcome him back to Pine Street!
