G ATHERING IN THE P RESENCE OF THE R ISEN C HRIST

PRAYER OF PREPARATION

Lord Jesus Christ, bread of heaven, you sustain us with life eternal. Draw us around your table and shape us by your holy mysteries so that our life in you might transcend tribe, ancestry, and heritage. Amen.

VOLUNTARY March in C

David N. Johnson Andante in C

(Please use the opening voluntary as a time of silent meditation and preparation for worship.)

SALUTATION

One: O Lord, open my lips,

Many: and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.

CALL TO WORSHIP

One: Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Hear my voice!

David Colestock

Many: Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications!

One: I wait for you, Lord, my soul waits, and in your word I hope.

Many: My soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning.

† Those able are invited to stand Bold text is read or sung by all

† PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy God, we confess that we have been prone to complaint and confused by your presence. We define our neighbors by our preconceived notions. We doubt that it’s you who has drawn us together. We imagine that true discipleship is burdensome and unattainable. We struggle to see that you are living still, living within us, and sustaining us every step of the way. Dear Lord, sanctify our vision that we might glimpse you in the bread we receive today, and all days, tasting eternal life right here and right now.

† SILENCE FOR PERSONAL CONFESSION

† KYRIE

† ASSURANCE OF PARDON

One: Almighty God have mercy upon us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, keep us in eternal life.

Many: Amen.

† GLORIA GLORIA PATRI

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

St. Meinrad VIII, Refrain: Robert Kreutz

One: I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad. (Refrain)

Many: O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together. I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. (Refrain)

One: Look to him, and be radiant, so your[a] faces shall never be ashamed. This poor soul cried and was heard by the LORD and was saved from every trouble. (Refrain)

Many: The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him and delivers them. O taste and see that the LORD is good; happy are those who take refuge in him. (Refrain)

THIRD LESSON John 6:35, 41-51

SERMON

“Carried Over”

† AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from John 1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it.

† THE PEACE

One: The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Many: And also with you.

ANTHEM I’d Rather Have Jesus arr. by David Neff

I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold; I’d rather be his than have riches untold; I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands; I’d rather be led by his nail-pierced hand. Than to wear the crown of a vast domain and be held in sin’s dread sway; I’d rather have Jesus than anything this world affords today. I’d rather have Jesus than crowd’s applause; I’d rather be faithful to his dear cause; I’d rather have Jesus than worldwide fame; I’d rather be true to his holy name. Than to wear the crown of a vast domain and be held in sin’s dread sway; I’d rather have Jesus than anything this world affords today. He’s fairer than lilies of rarest bloom; he’s sweeter than honey from out the comb; he’s all that my hungering spirit needs; I’d rather have Jesus and let him lead. Than to wear the crown of a vast domain or be held in sin’s dread sway; I’d rather have Jesus than anything this world affords today.

PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise Christ, all people here below; Praise Holy Spirit evermore; praise triune God, whom we adore. Amen.

INTERCESSION, SUPPLICATION, AND CONSECRATION

One: In your mercy,

Many: Lord, hear our prayer.

… now and forever.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
