Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

G ATHERING IN THE P RESENCE OF THE R ISEN C HRIST

PRAYER OF PREPARATION

Triune God, when no other words will suffice, we receive your Word in spirit and truth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, you hushed our world’s deadly monologue. In your Holy Writ, you call us as your own. By the Spirit’s proclamation, you continue to promise us that the best is yet to come. Give us ears to listen and tongues to confess, we pray, Amen.

VOLUNTARY Préambule

(Please use the opening voluntary as a time of silent meditation and preparation for worship.)

SALUTATION

One: The Lord is in his holy temple. Many: Let all the earth keep silent.

CALL TO WORSHIP

One: The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.

Many: Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge.

One: There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard. Many: Yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.

One: Let us converse with Almighty God in worship. † HYMN 15 All Creatures of Our God and King

OF CONFESSION

Incarnate Word, we long to be excellent stewards of your creation and to craft something new from the raw material of our lives. Yet, we confess that our tongues have led us astray. Our words have caused hurt. Yet, our silence speaks volumes. Even our fervent prayers obsess over the small embarrassments and omissions arising in the normal course of life. Yet, we overlook the greatest sites of destruction for ourselves and for each other. Holy Wisdom, lay upon our lips the coals of your holy fire, that we might speak words of blessing to you and upon those made in your likeness.

† ASSURANCE OF PARDON

One: Claimed in the waters of baptism, we are dead to the ways of sin, and ever alive in Christ.

Many: For those who lose their life for his sake, and for the sake of his gospel, will be saved. Thanks be to God!

† GLORIA GLORIA PATRI

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

† AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Colossians 1:15-20

Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible. All things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn of the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. Amen.

† THE PEACE

One: The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Many: And also with you.
