Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost

G ATHERING IN THE P RESENCE OF THE R ISEN C HRIST

PRAYER OF PREPARATION

O God, full of compassion, I commit and commend myself to you, in whom I am, and live, and know. Be the goal of my pilgrimage, and my rest by the way. Let my soul take refuge from the crowding turmoil of worldly thought beneath the shadow of your wings. Let my heart, this sea of restless waves, find peace in you, O God. Amen.

VOLUNTARY Prelude and Fugue in A Minor

J.S. Bach (Please use the opening voluntary as a time of silent meditation and preparation for worship.)

SALUTATION

One: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, Many: and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

Elyse Rogers

INTROIT Come and Worship Karen Marrolli Come and worship, worship here, blest community of love! Come just as you are, come near! Come and worship God above. Here below we see God’s face in each precious child of grace. Come just as you are, come near! Come and worship, worship here!

† Those able are invited to stand Bold text is read or sung by all

CALL TO WORSHIP

One: The angel of the Lord encamps around all those who fear him and delivers them.

Many: Taste and see that the Lord is good. Happy are those who take refuge in him.

One: Fear the Lord, you his holy ones, for those who fear him have no want. Many: The young lions suffer want and hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

One: Let us worship the God of abundant grace.

† HYMN 320 The Church of Christ in Every Age WAREHAM

† PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Lord Jesus Christ, you have borne our infirmities and stand ever in the breach for us. Yet, we confess that we are ever more concerned our own standing. Though you call us to be your servants, we are quick to argue who is greater. We live by our own calculus of importance and prestige, filled with envy and selfish ambition. We’re close-handed when faced with the poor and do not face others with the welcome you’ve called us to share. Purify our spirits, that we might live peaceably and with gentleness, filled with your mercy and filling your kingdom with good fruits. † SILENCE FOR PERSONAL CONFESSION

† ASSURANCE OF PARDON

One: Do not fear, says the Lord, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by name; you are mine.

Many: God is doing a new thing; now it springs forth! By the grace of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen.

† GLORIA GLORIA PATRI

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

R EADING AND H EARING THE W ORD

FIRST LESSON Proverbs 31:10-31

† PSALM 1

Old Testament Page 613

Arranged by Hal Hopson

One: Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked or take the path that sinners tread or sit in the seat of scoffers, but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law, they meditate day and night.

REFRAIN.

Many: They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. REFRAIN

One: In all that they do, they prosper. The wicked are not so but are like chaff that the wind drives away. REFRAIN

Many: Therefore, the wicked will not stand in the judgment nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous, for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. REFRAIN.

SECOND LESSON James 3:13-4:3

THIRD LESSON Mark 9:30-37

SERMON “The Ambassadors” The Rev. Seelman

† AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Philippians 2:5-11 Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess to the glory of God: Jesus Christ is Lord! Amen.

† THE PEACE

One: The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Many: And also with you.
