Twenty Second Sunday after Pentecost

G ATHERING IN THE P RESENCE OF THE R ISEN C HRIST

PRAYER OF PREPARATION

Faced with your presence, O God, we have no basis for comparison. Words fall short and our feelings betray us. Still, you became like us, speaking words we could understand, calling us to become lower still and to show love unto death. Invite us again and again into this mystery of faith, that we may, in manifold ways, offer ourselves to you and one another. Amen.

VOLUNTARY Prelude in F

Johann Krebs

(Please use the opening voluntary as a time of silent meditation and preparation for worship.)

SALUTATION

One: Give thanks to God for the faith we share; Many: be steadfast in hope through Jesus Christ.

INTROIT He that Hath My Commandments

Linda McLaughlin

Thomas Shorter

He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, the same is he that loveth me. If any man love me, he will keep my word, and my father will love him, and we will come unto him and dwell with him.

CALL TO WORSHIP

One: The Lord is wrapped in light as with a garment. You make the winds your messengers, fire and flame your ministers.

Many: You set the earth on its foundations so that it shall never be shaken.

One: O Lord, how manifold are your works. In wisdom, you have made us all.

Many: The earth is full of your creatures. Let us praise the Lord!

† HYMN 24 God, Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens HOLY

† PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O Lord, you have taught us that whoever wishes to become great must be a servant, and whoever seeks to be first must be last and servant of all. Still, O Lord, we are like James and John, seeking seats of glory. We organize our lives around ladders to climb, not realizing that we are stepping on people whom you love. Forgive us, O Christ, and teach us to follow in your way, for the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

SILENCE FOR PERSONAL CONFESSION

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

One: Now stand firm in your faith, covered by the saving grace of God and ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

Many: Thanks be to God.

MANNA

† GLORIA GLORIA PATRI

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

† AFFIRMATION OF FAITH adapted from the Confession of 1967 9.32-33

The life, death, resurrection, and promised coming of Jesus Christ has set the pattern for the church’s mission. His human life involves the church in the common life of all people. His service to men and women commits the church to work for every form of human well-being. His suffering makes the church sensitive to all human suffering so that it sees the face of Christ in the faces of persons in every kind of need. His crucifixion discloses to the church God’s judgment on the inhumanity that marks human relations, and the awful consequences of the church’s own complicity in injustice. In the power of the risen Christ and the hope of his coming, the church sees the promise of God’s renewal of human life in society and of God’s victory over all wrong. The church follows this pattern in the form of its life and in the method of its action. So to live and serve is to confess Christ as Lord.

† THE PEACE

One: The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

Many: And also with you.
