The Good News Is: As 2014 dawns at Pine Street, the outreach mission initiative of establishing an Adult Learning Center (ALC) is much closer to realization, thanks to several grants and donations from a number of community and corporate sources. Over the past six months or so the ALC Planning Committee has been preparing and submitting proposals requesting external funding to support the project, and in recent weeks we have been gratified to learn of several awards which now put us in a position to move forward more actively. The initial grant of $25,000 from The Donald and Dorothy Stabler Foundation was received in late September and followed by two grants from the Carlisle Presbytery, one from the Strengthening Our Congregations Committee and another from the Mission Advocacy Committee, which put together total $23,000. As of this writing, the Planning Committee is

also awaiting word on a request to TE Connectivity to support the creation of a purpose-built computer lab which would be designed to meet the requirements for becoming a certified GED Testing Center. Then the Pine Street venue will not only provide student tutoring and instructional classroom development but could augment the area’s other two existing testing facilities at TriCounty OIC and at HACC which currently are not believed to be adequate to serve the projected, increased need for testing places as a consequence of the newly implemented, exclusive use of computerbased examinations for GED candidates.

In addition to the cash grants, the ALC Planning Committee has also accepted two significant in-kind donations, both of which resulted from suggestions from Pine Street members. In the spring, we acquired See ALC on page 4
A Farewell to Ms. Brenda Ervin by Elaine Strokoff, Executive Director, Downtown Daily Bread
After 28 years at Pine Street Presbyterian Church and Downtown Daily Bread, Brenda Ervin has “ hung up her apron” and said goodbye. At 1:15 she dined like a queen at a luncheon in her honor hosted by DDB. Pine Street staff joined in toasting Brenda’s retirement along with the presentation of gifts, many toasts for a bright future, and many humorous and heartfelt stories. I had a tear in my eye as I recounted my first meeting with Brenda. It was almost 19 years ago when I was taken to see the soup See Farewell on page 2
