“God’s Love in Action”: A Tea to Honor Carol Mader

According to the flyer you will find in the Gathering Place, Stephen Ministry is “God’s Love in Action.” It is a ministry where lay persons have been trained to provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care to individuals in the congregation and community who are experiencing difficulties in their lives. A Stephen minister is someone who is a child of God, a member of the congregation with gifts for caregiving, a lay person who has received 50 hours of training in providing emotional and spiritual care, a Christian friend who listens, prays, supports and encourages. It is someone who will “be there” for his or her care receiver, meeting faithfully for about an hour each week, for as long as there is a need.

Here at Pine Street, Stephen Ministry was brought to the attention of our Senior Pastor, Russell Sullivan, in

2009 by Carol Mader. Carol learned about Stephen Ministry in part from her brother who is a Stephen Minister at his church. She felt a need to bring the kind of caring and comfort that Stephen Ministry offers to our congregation.

Inspired by further investigation of what Stephen Ministry can do for those who need support and Christian love, she began working with Russell in 2009 to bring the needed information, materials and training to Pine Street. In 2010 the first team of Stephen Ministers was developed and has been available for care. In 2012 we commissioned three new Stephen Ministers to add to the team.

Jonathan Hays Featured in next MAPS Concert

Pine Street’s own native son, Jonathan Hays is the featured performer in the next Music At Pine Street concert, which will be held on Friday evening, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. and will be a benefit for Downtown Daily Bread, replacing an earlier concert that had to be canceled.

Brahms and a new song cycle

by Jeremy Gill entitled Helian.

Mr. Gill serves as Mr. Hays’ accompanist for the concert which makes for an especially wonderful experience of Mr. Gill’s new work. Jeremy Gill is a native of Harrisburg currently working out of Philadelphia. He is a young composer who has gained much respect in the musical world for his exciting music. His works include pieces for orchestra, chamber ensembles and organ as well as voice.

Jonathan Hays teaches studio voice at Dickinson College, Susquehanna University, and Brooklyn College and Conservatory of Music; and specializes in performances of newly composed vocal music. Career highlights include performances of leading roles with the Los Angeles Opera, Washington Opera, the Lincoln Center Festival, Portland Opera, Central City Opera, Bel Canto at Caramoor, Opera de la Colombia, and Cape Town Opera; and concert engagements with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Mostly Mozart Festival, Toronto Symphony, Musica Viva, American Symphony Orchestra, and Colorado Symphony, among many others. His recording of Jeremy Gill’s Helian ranked fourth on Philadelphia City Paper’s list of Top 10 Classical Albums of 2011, and the Big Easy Foundation honored him with their 2011 award for Best Performance of New Classical Music. All in all he has a busy career of both teaching and performing.

Vacation Bible School will be held June 25 – 29, 2012 from 6:00 – 8:30p.m. Pine Street will again partner with Faith United Church of Christ in New Cumberland.

Children age three through fifth grade are welcome. We will be learning about Daniel.

The concert is free, which is a change from the original announcement. Being a benefit, we hope you will bring your checkbook and be generous to Downtown Daily Bread, our own mission in action right here at Pine Street Church. For your convenience, the South Street garage will be open and free of charge to all concert attendees. We offer child care for the event. Mark the date now, and make it a priority of your spring ‘to do’ list! It will be an evening to remember.

Trustee Notes for March Approved the accounting firm of Greenawalt & Company to perform audits for Pine Street and DDB for the years 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Approved the job description for the office of Treasurer of Pine Street.

Approved the termination of Pine Street’s relationship with US Trust/Bank of America, and approved transferring all managed investments to Bryn Mawr Trust.

Approved the purchase and installation of a security camera in the South Street entrance.

Accepted a proposal to refinish the floors in the sanctuary with work to be done in the summer months.

What can we do? How can we help?

I am often asked these two questions. When they relate to DDB, the answer can be short and easy, “write a check, donate goods, or volunteer.” I might add that a mere $2 donation would pay for a meal for a hungry person or that a donation of clothing or personal hygiene items would help the Downtown Daily Bread Lunch Plus program. If I had more time, I could tell them client stories and encourage folks to attend DDB fundraising events.

If you would like to be on the Downtown Daily Bread mailing list, please send your name and mailing address (not email) to estrokoff@ pinestreet.org or call 238-4717.

Once your name is on the mailing list, you will receive the DDB newsletter, event invitations, and other important information.

DDB is in need of . . . razors and

personal hygiene items, especially shampoo.

There is also a need for professional, interview, and work-appropriate women’s clothing, as well as casual. The DDB counselors are seeing more women clients and are helping them on their way to self-sufficiency.

We need your help. You can drop items off at 234 South St. If you need help bringing it in, call the client counslor at 238-4718 and she will get people to help.

Pine Street Life

To answer “What can I do? How can we help?” in our larger context is far more complex. Based upon my 17 years at DDB, I would say that we must focus on the individual. That said, I wrestle with the concept of the “chicken or the egg?” At DDB we work primarily with adults. We see people who have experienced lives of negativity and strife. They have done things we cannot imagine and have witnessed things we should never experience. These young adults are old beyond their years.

When they become parents and are responsible for raising a child, I feel there is a need for society to step in and provide help.

In many cases, young, uneducated parents living in poverty never had a real childhood. There was no stability in their lives and no appropriate role modes for parenting. I think it imperative that we work as a community or “village” to offer these young adults and their children the best opportunities beginning with the birth of the baby and continuing into teenage years. Downtown Daily Bread helps by offering meals and counseling young women who become pregnant. We refer them to the proper agencies for health checks, prenatal care, and financial assistance. DDB may help with employment counseling and shelter, as well. When someone asks me, “how can I really make a difference?” I would say that beyond helping provide the basics of life such as food, clothing, and shelter, provide for the next generation.

Do this by becoming a mentor for a young mother or father and provide them with a good role model for parenting. Many children born into poverty and ignorance do not have a chance of growing into a happy, independent, healthy adult unless we provide those services to them. Every minute, every cent spent in this endeavor will come back ten fold. Not just for the child but for society at large.

On a brighter note, I wish you all happy spring and a happy heart as we watch the earth renew itself. Peace.

Walk for Community Checkup Center

Camp Krislund Annual Spring Work Day As summer approaches there are always jobs that need to be done to prepare Camp Krislund for the nearly 700 children who will begin arriving in June. Work includes a variety of activities such as planting, painting, power washing, putting on wagon canvases, placing equipment. Please join us on Saturday, May 5 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with lunch and fellowship to follow.

Volunteers of all skill levels are welcome! Tools are available at Krislund, but please bring your own work gloves. RAIN OR SHINE. Carpooling is possible. Sign up at Welcome Center.

ALSO, a list of needed items for the camp is on the mission table. Items can be delivered to the camp through the Presbytery Office in Camp Hill.

They will be sent to Haiti and India with a local medical mission group for use as medications are dispensed to patients.

New Brochure/DVD For Visitors

For the past 8 months, Chris Ewing and I have been working closely with Steven Neiman to produce a new brochure and DVD for visitors who attend our church services. This brochure is the result of many hours of painstaking effort and is a beautiful representation of our congregation. Every person who visits our church will be given one of these brochures with a DVD in the back pocket as a means to encourage them to become active members of our community.

The first printing of this brochure had an error, so we had to have them reprinted (free of charge). As a result, we now have 2,000 brochures. The 1,000 that are error free will be given to visitors with the DVD in the back pocket. The 1,000 with the error we would like to give out to the congregation. We want you to take them home with you and give them out to your friends, neighbors and colleagues.

They will be available at the Welcome Center and you can have as many as you want. We only ask that if you take them that you give them to people rather than keep them for yourself. I think you will agree that the brochure is absolutely stunning. I am proud to have been a part of its creation and I believe it reflects everything important about our church, our values and our faith. I encourage you to check it out and take some with you to help us get the word out about what’s happening at Third and Pine.

Lenten Food Drive Thank you to those who contributed to the Lenten Food Drive for Ecumenical Food Pantry.

In February we were able to deliver 12 bags of food and 15 bags in March.

Youth Mission Trip

I would like to say a word of thanks for everyone who contributed to our Youth Mission Trip during the fundraiser on Palm Sunday and Easter. You all generously donated over $2600, which was our goal. Your donations will help offset the cost of transportation, which is quite expensive because of the number of youth we are transporting to Florida.

Deaths Robert Ward September 19, 1936 – March 13, 2012

As you all are aware, each year I attempt to expose our youth to a different kind of poverty. The first mission trip dealt with urban poverty. The second mission trip exposed them to rural poverty. This year our mission trip is aiming to serve the mentally handicapped. I am attempting to expose our youth to what I call “poverty of the mind.”

Unlike rural and urban poverty, which are often defined by geography and resources, the mentally handicapped suffer from a very different kind of poverty.

What you and I take for granted every day as we navigate the world around us and work to build our lives through knowledge and information are incomprehensible to the people we will be serving.

The challenge of this trip is really twofold. On the one hand, I think the youth will grapple with the issue that the meaning that defines our lives, is the not the same meaning that defines the lives of the mentally handicapped. On the other hand, they will grapple with the fact that the mentally handicapped are still God’s children and our assumptions of what brings meaning to our lives is patently misguided. My hope is that they will discover that all humans possess an intrinsic and indescribable value that is the basis upon which we should define the meaning of our lives.

We are traveling to the first place I ever participated on a mission trip and I can assure you that the impact of this trip is much easier to feel than it is to articulate.

Though they may return unable to convey in words how this trip affected them, I guarantee there will be something inside of them that has changed as a result of this trip. I look forward to telling you all about it during the Adult Forum on August 5th. Thank you again for your generosity. We could not do these mission trips without your support.

Pine StreetWalkers Ready To Hit the Trail On Sunday, May 13, 2012, the Pine StreetWalkers will return to the Victoria and White Tail Trails in hopes of catching a glimpse of the freshly blooming Pink Lady’s Slipper. This will be a three mile loop hike with a considerable climb up a rocky trail. The pace will be as slow as the slowest walker. Wear good footwear and bring water. Of course, bring your cameras.

Sorry, you may not pick this endangered wildflower. So take plenty of photos for your mother and take them to her on this Mothers Day. Better yet, have your mother come along. We will meet at the trail head parking lot at 1 pm.

Directions to the trail: Take PA Route 225 north out of Dauphin (approximately 2 miles), turn right onto PA Route 325, go exactly 5 miles, the trail head parking lot is on your left. Be careful, the parking area is easy to miss as it is behind trees and just after you crest a small hill. Sign up at the Welcome Center.
