Pine Street VOLUME 33 | ISSUE 7
Pine Street Presbyterian Church
Summertime Music by Thomas Clark-Jones, Organist/Choirmaster
With the coming of June, the choir begins its summer recess which continues through the first Sunday in September. That group will be back leading worship on Rally Day, September 8. But in the mean time, a number of special treats are planned so that music will continue to fill the church during the recess. By the time this edition of Pine Street Live gets to you, you will have heard Kathy Montalbano at the piano, and her friend, oboist Keith Kaneda offering music on June 2nd, along with Kathy’s wonderful young piano student, Bradley Fagan. Also during June, solos by Bob Wilson, John Sharpe, Ray Weatherell and Elizabeth Anderson. As July begins, we will hear from Ron Poorman; former Pine Street Quartet member, Cheryl Crider; Roger Sieber and trombonist Rachel Bani. August will bring music from pianist Louise Poorman, singer Elizabeth Atnip, the Rader Brothers Trumpet Trio and the Poorman Family Singers, along with a few friends to fill in the spaces the Poorman’s can’t cover! During several Sundays in this period, our former Organ Scholar, Chelsea Barton, now a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, will be playing the organ while Tom ClarkJones takes some R&R. Chelsea will also be opening our 2013-2014
season of Music at Pine Street with an organ recital on Friday evening, September 13. Mark the date now. Returning this summer are the hymn sings we enjoyed for several summers. This time we are using the hymnal as our resource, as in the past, but also taking the opportunity to introduce some new hymns from the hymnal sampler that is in the pew racks right now. This small volume is a sampling of the contents of the soonto-be-published hymnal Glory to God. In the coming months we will be studying this new hymnal produced by the PC(USA) to decide if it’s time to replace the fine ‘blue book’ that has served us so well for more than twenty-five years. These events begin on June 23 and will continue through August 11, giving us eight weeks of opportunity to enjoy old and new hymns together. Each of these events begins at 10:45 am and replaces the usual organ prelude during this time. If you haven’t requested a favorite hymn, there is still time to register your request at the Welcome Center. Summer at Pine Street is always a time to ‘let our hair down’ a little, and stray from strict liturgical practice in the music program. It gives our many talented musicians a chance to do something special and in so doing add their own mark of praise in our services. We hope you will enjoy the change and the variety of gifts that are brought to us during this season.
