I have to admit that I watch more TV than I should. Sometimes I think I might be turning into Chauncey Gardner, the Peter Sellers character from the movie Being There.Chauncey found himself in some pretty high company and always answered questions by likening the subject at hand to a garden. That’s because he was not really Chauncey Gardner, but, Chauncey, the gardener. When asked what he did he would reply, “I like to watch TV.” Chauncey nearly was president for the perceived ‘wisdom’ in his gardening metaphors — and the fact was, there was truth in them. Big time! I’m not quite that into TV, but I do like the ‘letter’ shows: CSI, CSINY, SVU and of course, NCIS. The latter show features a favorite of mine, David McCallum. Mr. McCallum played the partner of the ever-suave Robert Vaughn on the Man from

UNCLE when I was a little kid, and now reappears in his elder years as the wise Navy Coroner, Dr. Mallard on NCIS. In a recently viewed episode, Dr. Mallard speaks to his young protégé who is reticent about some changes coming in his life, saying, “Mr. Palmer, when you get to be my age you realize that there is only one sure thing in life … change … so best embrace it.” Wise words indeed from a pop TV show. But I think perhaps it was good that I saw that episode, because as I get older, change is more difficult. And the change of leaving Pine Street for a new adventure is the biggest challenge yet.
