MAPS Season Begins September 13

In September of this month, Friday the 13th should turn out to be a very lucky day for those who join us to hear our former Organ Scholar, Chelsea Barton play a recital on the Pine Street organ. That evening, Chelsea opens the 2013 – 2014 season of Music at Pine Street with a recital featuring mostly French organ repertoire, a repertoire that plays very well on this instrument!

Chelsea first came to the attention of Pine Street music lovers when she became our Organ Scholar in the fall of 2008, when she began playing See MAPS on page 2

Rally Day Update

You may have read my article about Rally Day in our last edition of PSL. I spoke of opening doors to discipleship and how we as Christians can pass that faith on to others.

Our theme for Rally Day morning will be “Reaching out in Faith.”

Following a continental breakfast (a freewill offering will be taken) and a song by the energetic children of Pine Street, our speaker will be Alison Siewert. Alison is a dynamic speaker and enthusiastic teacher, focused on spreading the Gospel through leadership and community development, theatre ministry and worship leadership. She has led workshops in churches of our presbytery and is eager to join us on Rally Day. Alison will challenge us to think about how we can reach out in faith and what we need to be equipped to go forth in service. Join us on Sunday, September 8 in Fellowship Hall at 9:40am for good food and fellowship and to learn about how we can open the doors of discipleship so we can take the good news of God’s love into the world. MAPS Continued from page 1 the latter half of the early service and almost weekly postludes from the great organ literature. Then it was time to move on, and the venue was the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where she graduated this past May with a Bachelor’s degree and a Performer’s Certificate. At Eastman, she studied with William Porter, and earlier with Shelly MoormanStahlman of Lebanon Valley College.

In Rochester she spent two years as organist at First Church of Christ, Scientist and her senior year at Christ Church, Episcopal as their associate musician.

She placed second in the Schnitger International Organ Competition in 2012 and also took second prize in the Schweitzer Competition. She recently won the West Chester Competition. She leaves in late September to study in Toulouse, France with Michel Bouvard.

Her program at Pine Street includes works of Vierne, Bach, Brahms, Messiaen and the complete Symphony Romane of Charles Marie Widor. Come and hear our wonderful young virtuoso. In her four years away, she has become a mature master of her instrument and a musician from whom we are going to be hearing a great deal in the near future!

The concert begins at 7:30pm on Friday, September 13. The suggested donation at the door is $10.00. The South Street Garage will be open for the recital, so parking will be plentiful. Come and enjoy!

Discernment Continued from page 1 next several months to shape a vision for our ministry and mission. Before we even begin to decide about the calling of a new associate pastor, we believe that an extended time in prayer and reflection is essential for our planning. Each elder is committed to seeking God’s will for our future and being part of this process.

You need to know two other things. First, you are served well by able and dedicated staff members who are pros at pitching in and making sure that the ministry of Pine Street moves forward. Second, you are a gifted people with so much to share and offer in the service of God, and I know you will answer the call if you are needed. For these reasons and many more, I love being your pastor, and I look forward to leading See WORK on page 3

Session Notes Session did not have stated (regular) meetings in July and August, however there was much work and discussion through this period.

First, Session held a longscheduled retreat July 26-27 The focus was on gaining a better understanding of the roles of Elder and Pastor, our visions for Pine Street, and how Session can review and revise our strategic plan.

Second, committees have been thinking about the 2014 budget. A meeting will be held to review the status of “trusts” which have been established over the years by memorial and other gifts. Some are limited to particular uses and by how funds may be expended; others are not.

Income from these funds is an integral part of the budget.

And, last but not least, Session has had to deal with the immediate issues of Alex Lang’s departure.

This will continue to occupy Session over the coming months and, in fact, Session has decided to meet twice a month for the next several months to deal with the issues of Pine Street’s future, staffing needs, and so forth.

Much of this work will continue over the next few months. There is much to discuss. There are many opportunities. Pine Street’s future is exciting!

DDB Celebrates 30 Years of Feeding the Hungry

Correction to August DDB article: Judy’s last name is Bryan, not Bryant. Judy Bryan was not an associate pastor at Pine Street, she was a church member who ran DDB when it first started.

DDB would like to thank Cheryl Goode and her “little elves” for baking delicious sugar cookies and for making Christmas decorations during their “Christmas in July” fun day.” Our DDB clients have already enjoyed their sugar cookies (delicious!) and say Thank you!! and Merry Christmas!! This year marks a milestone of great significance for Downtown Daily Bread. It was 30 years ago, in 1983, that Downtown Daily Bread, as a mission of the Pine Street Presbyterian Church, opened its doors, its kitchen and its embrace to those who were hungry. For 30 years, people of every kind came to eat at the busy kitchen on South Street, Harrisburg. And for 30 years, Downtown Daily Bread fed them nourishing good food and treated them with compassion and respect.

And so with great joy and gratitude, we embark on a year-long celebration of Downtown Daily Bread’s 30th Anniversary. Invited to join the celebration are the community of devoted friends and partners, volunteers and benefactors and the staunchly supportive churches and synagogues. Without them, DDB could not have flourished and grown over the years. Together, we will share and celebrate this success on October 6, 2013, at the Harrisburg Hilton. An Honorary Co-Chair for the event will be The Rev. Dr. Fred R. Anderson who was the senior pastor of Pine Street Presbyterian Church in 1983 when Downtown Daily Bread was conceived. Dr. Anderson is currently the senior pastor of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York City. Joining Rev. Anderson will be Honorary Co-Chair Raymond F. Gover, long time Pine Street Trustee and former publisher of The Patriot-News. Valerie Pritchett of Channel ABC TV News will serve as emcee.

Trustees Notes Trustees do not meet in July or August A Request: Trustee minutes have now been bound and will be at the Welcome Center on Sundays. We ask that anyone who has been Secretary for the Trustees during the period 1998 to the present stop by and sign the minutes they prepared. They are on acid-free paper so they will be a permanent record. A hearfelt “thank you” to Michelle for her diligence in locating the minutes and having them bound.

The evening will begin at 5:30pm with an hour of mingling and music followed by a delicious dinner and a program including speakers, video, silent auction.

Ice Cream & Bingo On Friday, August 16, the Mission Committee provided an ice cream social for the residents of the Presbyterian Apartments. At least 30 residents attended the event.

Ice cream sundaes and cookies were served and then we played bingo.

Members of the mission committee provided prizes for the bingo games.

AND tomatoes were offered to the residents, thanks to the efforts of those who gleaned at Strites Orchard the day before. The residents of the Presbyterian Apartments always enjoy their time with members of Pine Street. We are currently discussing the possibility of starting a Shawl Ministry with the residents — they are interested.

Gleaning Tomatoes

So, I got a call from Strites Orchard on Monday, August 12, and the message was that there were tomatoes to be gleaned, but the gleaning needed to be done by the end of the week. Strites did not want to continue spraying this area of their garden, and the tomatoes were going to be tilled into the ground and not used. Within three days, we had the Central PA

Food Bank on board (the Food Bank delivered boxes to Strites and was ready to pick up whatever we were able to glean), and on Thursday morning, August 15, at 9:00am there were 10 volunteers ready to pick tomatoes. Those able to help were Joanne Alwine, Pam and Bill Bauer, Charles Gerdes, Patricia Page and her two grandchildren (Ava and Alex), Sarah and Larry Pearce, and Debbie Olson. Others who had offered to help but who were unable to help on Thursday (when most people could help) were Jo Dolbin, John Goodrich, and Linda McLaughlin. Thanks to all

who were willing to help glean. In about 1 ½ hours, our efforts yielded 27 bushels of tomatoes. We gave 1 ½ bushels directly to DDB. Mission Committee was to hold a gathering with residents of the Presbyterian Apartments the next day, and we saved ½ bushel for that gathering. So Central PA Food Bank got 25 bushels of tomatoes from our efforts. THANKS to all who helped make this possible on such short notice.

Prison Pen Pal Ministry

Christmas In July

Several months ago, Rev. Dr. Charles (Buz) Myers came to Pine Street, at the urging of Deb Olson, to speak to interested Pine Streeters about a prison pen pal ministry. The men involved are all from Buz’s Monday and Wednesday evening Bible studies. I, along with others, decided it would be a wonderful way to bring joy, concern and the Love of God to some prisoners. We each got to choose a man with whom we wished to write back and forth.

Buz gave us all the pertinent information to get us started in our pen pal writing. He guided us with questions to ask about our pen pal and how to send the letters so they will get to our pen pal. He also acknowledged that the men like to hear and enjoy the back and forth sharing of what is going on in our daily lives. My pen pal writes very well and described himself as having a very upbeat attitude, which I’ve found to be very true.

I speak for myself when I say it’s been eye and heart opening. I felt I would be doing this wonderful ministry for a prisoner who maybe had no one else that wrote to him or visited him. But in writing back and forth with my pen pal, he’s brought great joy into my life. I look forward to getting his newsy letters with great anticipation. I’m always struck with his upbeat attitude in the daily difficulties he faces on “the inside”. I’m also learning new prison language…”locked down,” “count off,” “the inside,” and “the outside.” We pray for each other and share our daily concerns. My pen pal has great faith and knows God is there for him in a very difficult situation. He knows he will not be getting out and will most likely be on “the inside” for the rest of his life. He has already served 20 years and is 42 years old. But his faith is strong and he always is grateful for God’s unfailing Love and Concern for him in the situation in which he finds himself. Hopefully, he is going to put me on his list so I can visit him soon. He has not had any visitors and has no one on his visitor list at the present time. I hope to remedy that soon!!

I would encourage any of you reading this to become involved in this wonderful ministry. Buz has more names available. These men on “the inside” are overwhelmed to know that there is someone on “the outside” that cares about them enough to write, pray, even visit but ultimately be a source of Christian strength for them.

KOALA Club Is Back In Action

KOALA Club began its regular year on Wednesday, August 28, 2013. Our first evening back we enjoyed a scavenger hunt around the church.

We will continue this year with games, practicing Bible verses, music and more each week. KOALA club is for students first through fifth grade and meets every Wednesday from late August through May of each year. The Christmas In July event was a great success!

Thank you to George and Eileen Kunkle, George for your donation of the wooden trees, your time cutting and sanding the trees and Eileen for the paint supplies. Thank you to the Mission committee for supporting this event.

And thank you to all who participated in painting the trees (they will go to DDB for table decorations in December), and for those who mixed and baked the many dozens of cookies that were enjoyed in July

2013-2014 Wonder of Worship

This summer elementary students have enjoyed an extended Wonder of Worship time. We have met in the library each Sunday beginning at eleven o’clock, and then entered the sanctuary in time for communion.

Summer is coming to an end and we will return to our regular schedule for Wonder of Worship on Sunday, September 8, 2013. Students will attend worship with their parents, come to the front of the Sanctuary for the children’s sermon and go with me to the library for Wonder of Worship time, returning to the sanctuary for communion.

Parents, I ask that if you want your child to sit with you when we come back into the sanctuary, that you meet us in the Gathering Place right after the doxology is sung. This means that children will be kept safe and assures they are getting to their parent. Thank you and I look forward to the upcoming year.

Meet Our New Members Deaths

Jeanne Rhine June 18, 1925 – July 17, 2013

Trudy Brunot, Kathleen White, Coty Funnye, Deborah Ann Fowler

Trudy Brunot comes to Pine Street from First Presbyterian Church of Greensburg where she served as a deacon and an elder and had been a member since she was a child. In addition to her job in human resources for the Commonwealth, she’s a freelance writer with more than 400 published articles. Trudy has a 24-year old daughter, Leslie, who lives in Pittsburgh.

She speaks French and Spanish. Her favorite Bible verse is John 14:2 and favorite hymn is The Doxology.

A native of Central Pennsylvania, Kathleen White grew up in the Presbyterian Church in “the outlying counties” and as a teenager was actively involved on the Carlisle Presbytery Youth Council. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, she returned to the Harrisburg area where she taught Latin and English at East Pennsboro High School for over a decade before returning once again to the University of Pittsburgh. There she earned a Ph.D. in International and Development Education and also worked on developing, and then served as the first Director of, The Pennsylvania Governor’s School for International Studies (1984-1998) before moving overseas in 1999.

Over the years, Kathleen has traveled extensively, living, teaching and/or consulting in such places as Brazil, China, England, Greece, Italy, Japan, Turkey, South Africa and most recently in Scotland. Despite what she regards as her “natural genetic nomadic tendencies”, Kathleen has been gradually repatriating herself, reconnecting with old soul mates and former colleagues, and working on establishing new friendships and relationships which now very much include the people of Pine Street.

My story Coty Funnye: I’ve lived in Harrisburg for 4 1/2 years and attended a couple of churches in the area but was not very happy. I asked a coworker of mine who attends and has the church involved with our daycare from time to time what her church was like. She told me to come visit one day. And me and my girls did. When walking in we were welcomed and the staff were very friendly. My girls loved the children’s church and for a while I did to until Mrs.Cheryl Goode directed me to a Sunday school class of my own. After a month or so I was so very comfortable I wanted to join.

I love the different events that go on in and out of the church that help me to show my children to have faith in God within themselves and to help others around you. I’m glad I was given the opportunity to become a member of the church and share an unforgettable moment getting baptised with my children. And now as a member me and my girls are disappointed when we miss a Sunday!

My name is Deborah Ann Fowler I recently got married to a wonderful man. I am a grandmother of 5 beautiful grandchildren, 4 girls and 1 boy. I just became an employee of the state and look forward to retirement in about 20 years...lol! I am from NJ where I grew up and raised my three children whom I am very proud of. This is the first time in my life that I have joined a church but I was raised believing in God and look forward to learning all that I can about God and being a part of a community in a way that I never have. I am blessed. Thank you Deborah Fowler( Smith).
