Fall Stewardship Campaign: “One Heart and Soul” Dr. Russell Sullivan, Pastor

In the fourth chapter of the book of Acts we read that the early church was “of one heart and soul,” and this unity in mission was so overwhelming and life changing that they were led to share all that they had to care for one another. I am hoping and praying for that kind of unity as we begin to reflect on our individual financial giving for 2013. Your Session has dreamed big for 2013 and believes that God is leading us to accomplish great things for God’s mission and ministry at Pine Street.

You will be hearing from me in midOctober in a letter with more details about the 2013 Budget and mission goals for our church next year. On Sunday, November 4, the Stewardship Committee will host a Campaign Breakfast in the Fellowship Hall at 9:40 a.m. A freewill offering will be received. At this continental breakfast these goals

will be presented to you. (Signups for the breakfast will begin on October 14 at the Welcome Center in the Gathering Place and on-line.)

You will also be given a pledge packet with a copy of the 2013 narrative budget, a pledge card, and a return envelope. During that two week period, we are asking everyone to pray and to discern what you think God is leading you to commit financially to the ministry of Pine Street. We ask that you bring your completed pledge card to worship on Sunday, November 18, to be consecrated in the service. (The return envelope is given to you in case you will not be in worship that Sunday.)

“One heart and soul” – Let’s strive for a unity that builds God’s kingdom at Pine Street for the sake of our community and all whom we serve.

Evensong for All Soul’s Day The Chamber Singers and Choir team up for a beautiful memorial service on All Soul’s Day, November 2, Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. The Chamber Singers begin the evening with a service of Choral Evensong. This beautiful service includes prayers and scriptures for the day as well as the traditional evening canticles: the Magnificat (Song of Mary) and the Nunc Dimittis (Song of Simeon) as set by English composer, Francis Jackson. The anthem for the evening is taken from “Dies Gratiae,” a set of meditations on grace by California composer, Craig Phillips, organist of All Saints’ See EVENSONG on page 3

These are important times to notify the pastors, but not the only times. In an increasingly complex world -- when we are pressured from every side in daily living -- here are some suggested times when it would be appropriate to call upon your pastors’ services, friendship and support: * When you are facing a serious family problem * When someone is interested in the church * When there is illness or hospitalization * When there is a death * When there is a wedding planned

DDB Focuses on Mental Health

In December, 2011, Downtown Daily Bread (DDB), formed a collaboration with Dauphin County Mental Health and a federal grant enabling DDB to hire a Street Outreach Coordinator and Mental Health Caseworker.

Proceeds to benefit DDB. They sell for $30 and DDB receives $5 for each book. That $5 will pay for 2.5 meals. . .every little bit helps and the book pays for itself. Great holiday gifts and hostess gifts.

Takes the anguish out of “what should I buy?” Think Downtown Daily Bread!

This position serves to ‘bridge the gap’ between DDB and the Dauphin County Case Management Unit, which serves those Dauphin County residents with a mental health diagnosis. The caseworker utilizes outreach as a major method to reach out to homeless individuals, particularly those with underlying mental health issues. These individuals typically do not utilize available services to meet their needs, and therefore, outreach efforts include walking throughout the Harrisburg community in an attempt to make contact with homeless individuals. Downtown Daily Bread is open to all individuals seeking a variety of services. As relationships evolve with clients and counselors and a sense of trust is established, additional referrals may be made for other services including the Case Management Unit and mental health counseling providers. The mental health counselor also works with individuals already receiving services from DDB as well as those who do not come to DDB but who may be identified with, or seeking evaluation for a mental health diagnosis.

In the end, our success can be evaluated through a variety of measures, hopefully ending with a sense of reestablishing contact with family and society.

Church, Beverly Hills. Following Evensong, the Choir will present the Requiem of Gabriel Fauré in memory of Donald L. Clapper, late Minister of Music Emeritus of Pine Street Church. This gentle and moving requiem is a fitting tribute to our beloved Don who gave so many years of his life to this congregation. Assisting in this performance will be Adrienne Weatherell, soprano, and John Sharpe, bass along with harpist Elizabeth EttersAsmus. Thomas Clark-Jones leads from the organ. A free will offering will be received and child care is provided.

The South Street garage will be open and free of charge for this event. Come and mark this fitting tribute to all our departed loved ones.

A Rally Day Thank You A big thank you to all who made Rally Day a success! There were lots of hands to help set up and take down tables and chairs, hands to cook and voices giving direction.

It was a glorious day, with blue skies and I thank all who helped make it happen.

PEACEMAKING

Gleaning At Strite’s October 13 or October 20 will be our gleaning date this year at Strites Orchard. Stay tuned to the website and bulletin insert for exact date and time.

Recycling Mission committee continues to talk about a recycling initiative at Pine Street. Anyone with ideas on how we can begin recycling plastic and metal should contact a member of the committee. The committee is checking with other churches and businesses in Harrisburg to find out how they deal with this issue.

With so much metal and plastic used at DDB, the committee feels this is an important initiative.

Presbyterian Apartments Save the date– W e d n e s d a y , December 5, we will join with residents of the Presbyterian Apartments for a Christmas gathering.

Peace has been defined as tranquility, a calm and quiet state, free from disturbances or noise. To live in peace, to be in a state of peace, takes on different meanings for all of us. Living peacefully includes the protection of individuals’ integrity and human rights. For some of us, peace means access to education and the elimination of poverty, homelessness, injustice, and violence. For some, peace is the ability to openly express our opinions or to practice our religious beliefs without the fear of imprisonment or even death. In our homes, our communities, and our world, we are called to be makers of peace. Peacemaking is the human response to God’s gift of peace giving.

The Peacemaking Offering was created in 1980 to support the efforts of the PC(USA) to live out a deeper commitment to peacemaking as part of our faithfulness to God. It is one of four special offerings designated by the PC(USA)’s General Assembly. 50% of the offering is used by the General Assembly ministries through the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program. 25% is used by presbyteries and synods.

And 25% stays locally to support an agency that is working toward peace in our community.

This year Pine Street’s mission committee has decided to give that 25% of our collection on Sunday, October 7, to “Neighborhood Dispute Settlement.” This group was formed in 1979, originating with people from the Society of Friends and the Fair Housing Council. It serves Dauphin, Cumberland, and Perry counties.

The purpose is to facilitate decisions (not make them) among the parties. Some examples of mediation activities include a dispute with a family member; a dispute with a landlord or tenant; a dispute with a business, agency, merchant, consumer, or organization; a dispute with a neighbor, including harassment, loud music or noise, parking problems, pet problems, etc. Two facilitators mediate each case — our own Margaret Mielke is a trained facilitator and has been mediating disputes for this group for several years.

Thank you Messiah College Students A heartfelt thank you to Ted Davis and his team of Messiah College freshman who spent their Service Day cleaning woodwork in the sanctuary, balcony and choir loft, and serving at DDB. We appreciate their hard work and service to Pine Street and the community.

Fall Work Day At The Church A lot of work has taken place to make our church look beautiful. The inside of the sanctuary has been repainted and floors refinished and the signboards outside have been restored. There is still more work that needs to be done. The property committee will hold a congregational work day on October 13th to scrape and repaint the railing on the handicapped ramp and the entrances on Pine Street and refinish the one door on South Street. Also, to repaint the yellow strips on the steps entering the church at Third and South. Brad is developing a list of other jobs to do if we have enough volunteers. If you are willing to help (no experience necessary) please sign up at the Welcome Center. You can also sign up for the Men’s Breakfast and eat before we start to work. CHRISTMAS COOKIE BAZAAR

Have you ever wondered about the history of cookies? Or where cookies come from? I would like to give you the amazing history of cookies!

According to culinary historians, cookies evolved from test cakes used to test oven temperature. Small amounts of cake batter were dropped onto pans to test the temperature of the oven before the cakes were baked.

Cookies are believed to date back to 7th century Persia (one of the first countries to cultivate sugar), and spread throughout Europe as a result of the Muslim conquest of Spain, and by the 14th century, cookies were common throughout all of Europe.

By the 1800s, cookie recipes were being published in cookbooks as ‘small cakes.’ In fact, the term ‘cookie’ comes from the Dutch word koekje or koekie which means little cake!

What we call ‘cookies’ in the United States are called biscuits in the United Kingdom and Australia, galletas in Spain, kels in Germany, and biscotti or amaretti in Italy.

The history of cookies continued with their journey to America during the English and Dutch settlement in the 1600s.

Throughout the 19th century, most cookies were baked at home as special treats because of the high cost of sugar. In the early 1900s recipes for cookies in a variety of styles and flavors increased and continues today.

Ninety percent of home bakers bake cookies, making them the most common home baked good. Half of all home baked cookies are chocolate chip. The official state cookie of both Massachusetts and Pennsylvania is the chocolate chip cookie that was invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1930 at the Toll House Inn Restaurant in Massachusetts. Mrs. Wakefield sold the recipe to Nestle, who began manufacturing chocolate chips in 1939.

Now that we know the amazing facts about cookies, and I hope it has you thinking about your favorite cookie, I want to tell you about another amazing fact.

Pine Street’s Kitchen committee is offering a Christmas Cookie Bazaar, to be held on Saturday, December 8th in Fellowship Hall. The doors will be open from 10:00a.m. until 12:30p.m. There will be cookies, fudge and sweet breads for sale.

Cookies and fudge will be sold by the pound. Sweet breads will be priced separately.

And for those who are looking for that special gift, for that special someone, there will be craft items, jewelry and gift baskets for sale. Come join us and I bet you will find your favorite cookie!

Pine Street Life

Movie Night Fundraiser On Saturday, October 20th at 7:00pm in the Fellowship Hall the Congregational Life committee will be hosting a Movie Night Fundraiser for the youth mission trip to Haiti in June. The idea behind this fundraiser is that you donate the amount you would normally spend going out to dinner and movie.

We will be watching the movie Contact with Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey. Although this movie is rated PG, children under the age of 10 will have trouble following the plotline, so we ask that parents please take that into consideration. Childcare will be provided. We will also provide light refreshments including, popcorn, candy and nachos. The youth who plan to attend the trip will be helping to serve. So come and enjoy a night at the movies and support the youth in their efforts to serve the people of Haiti.

Kirkin’ of the Tartans

On October 14th at 11 am Pine Street will celebrate Scottish Heritage Sunday — also known as Kirkin’ of the Tartans.

You may wonder why we don’t celebrate French Heritage Sunday? Or, Mexican? Or, Irish? Or any number of countries that contribute to our modern American culture. Perhaps we should!

But, despite some inconvenient facts, Scotland holds a special place in the development of Presbyterianism.

Inconvenient facts? Well, St. Columba who brought Christianity to most of Scotland came from Ireland.

And, Francis Makemie, the first Presbyterian Minister in America, was an Irishman (although educated in Edinburg, Scotland.)

As the Reformation grew after Luther published his 95 Grievances, John Calvin emerged as a leading Reformist scholar. We hear his name and teachings frequently from our pulpit even today.

One of his students, John Knox, a Scotsman, took Calvin’s principles back to Scotland, where a nascent Reformist faith struggled for legitimacy, defied the Monarchy, and led the Scottish Parliament to abolish Roman Catholicism and establish the Presbyterian Church. The Scots Confession of 1560 is the third Confession in our Presbyterian Book of Confessions.

It is from this rich tradition that our theology and polity are formed. The three marks of the true Kirk (Church) come from Knox: true preaching, regular administration of the Sacraments, and ecclesiastical discipline within the Church. It is said that the Presbyterian Form of Government —Session, Presbytery, General Assembly —served as a model for the US Constitution.

So, these are reasons for remembering and studying our Scottish heritage. Tartan is more celebration of a bygone way of life and those who suffered for faith, country, and tradition.

Pine Street Walkers Hike On Sunday, October 14 2012, the Pine S t r e e t Wa l k e r s will return to Peters Mountain to walk on the Appalachian Trail to Table Rock and back. This will be a four mile hike out and back over a rocky trail.

The pace will be as slow as the slowest walker.

Wear good footwear and bring water. Of course, bring your cameras. If the timing is right, we will see the beautiful fall colors of Clarks Creek Valley.

We will meet at the trail head parking lot at 1 pm.

Directions to the trail: Take PA Route 225 north out of Dauphin (approximately 4 miles), to the top of Peters Mountain. The entrance to the trail head parking lot is on your right before you pass under the pedestrian walking bridge over Route 225. Proceed up the driveway with caution.
