THE BOSS’S NOTES

T HE M A N AG ER

SIMON WEAVER GOOD AFTERNOON ahead of today’s game against Bradford City, and thank you for your continued support from home. I would like to extend a warm welcome to Mark Trueman and Conor Sellars and the staff and players of Bradford City who have made the short trip up to North Yorkshire today. We had Conor here as a winger in 2013/14, so I’m sure the game will have that extra significance for him. On Tuesday against Leyton Orient, we continued to move the ball around like we had done in the first half at Bolton, but we also added a physical edge. The lads did everything we want of them and there was a grit and determination not to lose and it actually never felt like we were going to, despite falling behind twice. That was really pleasing to see, as it’s something we’ve struggled with, getting back into games after falling behind. We were busy and relentless and showed an abundance of character all over the park. Today’s game is hugely significant for our club and further demonstrates how far we have come. It will be a fantastic challenge and one we’re relishing against one of League Two’s biggest clubs, and they’ll be coming here to continue their great run, optimistic that they can still push for a

shot at promotion. It’s a Yorkshire derby and an early kick-off, so naturally gets the juices flowing and gives us that extra incentive and motivation to make sure we come out on top. In the televised fixture at Valley Parade earlier in the season, we produced one of our better performances of the campaign, playing with great intensity and passing the ball around well and we’ll be looking to replicate that again today. Our pitch is playing much better now which allows us to play more of our preferred brand of football and is true testament to the hard work of our ground staff. It will be good for us next season. Lastly, I’d just like to mention the exciting launch of our Category 4 Academy which was announced earlier this week. Under the guidance of Paul Stansfield, Ross McKay and Dave Riley, the Academy is a key component to driving the club forward and will provide young footballers with the opportunity to train with the club and develop and progress into the first team set up. Enjoy the game!

FROM THE SKIPPER

T HE C A P TA I N

JOSH FALKINGHAM WE COME INTO TODAY’S GAME with Bradford City on the back of a really spirited fight back against Leyton Orient on Tuesday night.

In terms of mentality, it’s a huge boost for us to take this result into the final few games and for our trip to Wembley.

It’s been tough recently and again we found ourselves not once, but twice behind. Leyton Orient are a good side and we’ve had difficult games against them in the past so we were really happy with the night’s work and it felt like we finished stronger than them and were the team that were most likely to win it.

It’s especially important to take confidence into the Yorkshire derby on Saturday. Bradford are a massive club and we’re really looking forward to that game. A change of manager has seen them do really well and they brought in top quality signings in January.

It was pleasing that we didn’t let our heads drop and that we kept going after going behind for the second time particularly. When you go 2-1 up, it’s much easier to manage rather than fighting to get back into the contest, and coming back after falling behind is something that we’ve found difficult to do but it’s part and parcel of the level that we’re at now - it’s not going to be easy.

The kick-off has of course been brought forward and that can always add a little extra to it. We’ll be right up for it and looking forward to hopefully doing the double over our closest rivals. It’s a big game for the fans and a win would again show how far we’ve come as a club.

GARRY PLANT

ONE OF MY FIRST TOWN MATCHES was against Bradford Park Avenue which took me back to my childhood listening to my dad and grandad talking about the rivalry between City and Park Avenue. My first match at Valley Parade was in March 1976 against Southampton in the FA Cup quarter final, the ground was packed and the atmosphere was absolutely electric.

Hospitality Team are working hard on events to allow supporters the chance to watch the match, in their permitted bubble and to celebrate the day with a drink. We have to meet all the demands of Public Health England as well the Harrogate Safety Advisory Group.

I never imagined we would be welcoming the Bantams to The EnviroVent Stadium, perhaps we are all still pinching ourselves at being in the EFL and without doubt everyone is working hard on and off the pitch to ensure the club continues travelling forward.

We will keep you posted on the progress we make and at the same time please rest assured that we are working closely with the EFL on a return to crowds for the 2021/22 campaign.

On 3 May we return to Wembley for The Trophy Final and whilst it will be behind closed doors, our

8

The most important responsibility we have is to make sure everyone is safe.

JON STEAD

JON STEAD

A TRIBUTE TO JORDAN SINNOTT On 25 January 2020, Matlock Town were set to play Mickleover Sports at the Don Amott Arena in a crucial Northern Premier League Derbyshire derby. Sadly, this match never took place. News had come through in the early hours of that Saturday morning that Matlock Town midfielder Jordan Sinnott had been found unconscious with a suspected fractured skull following an altercation in which he was brutally attacked. Jordan was rushed to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield in a critical condition and despite the best efforts by doctors, Sinnott passed at 7pm on 25 January at the age of just 25 years old. The tragic news shocked Jordan’s family, his friends, his football club and the footballing world. In this interview, we sit down with Town striker and extremely close friend of Jordan, Jon Stead, as we pay tribute to the life of Jordan Sinnott. By Henry Whitaker JORDAN WAS BORN IN BRADFORD and was a gifted footballer. As a youngster, he played for Shipley Juniors, Guiseley JFC and St Marys Menston before signing a scholarship with Huddersfield Town at 16 years old. Jordan went on to captain the U18 team and was then offered a professional contract with the Terriers in 2012. The Bradford born lad made his first-team debut under a year later in the fourth round of the FA Cup against Leicester City on 26 January 2013 and he would spend eight years at Huddersfield Town.

15

A TRIBUTE TO JORDAN SINNOTT

It was at the West Yorkshire club where Jordan and Stead first met. Stead had begun his second spell with Huddersfield at the start of the 2013/14 season but immediately found himself out of favour with manager Mark Robins. Being left out of the pre-season tour to Portugal turned out to be the beginning of a true friendship between Stead and Sinnott. “For the pre-season, everybody had to give their passports for the tour and I handed my passport in and a couple of days later it was put back on my kit so I knew I wasn’t going to be travelling to Portugal with the first team,” Stead laughs. “I stayed back and trained with the under 23s for a week and Jordan was part of that group and we struck up a good friendship”. Stead continues, “he was always smiling and would crack a joke while still being fully focused on making it as a footballer. He was a really good character to have in the dressing room, he would light up a room and his smile was infectious.” On the pitch, Stead says Jordan was a “natural talent who made it look easy” and he became part of a tight-knit group that included Stead, Duane

16

Holmes, Matt Crooks, Lloyd Allinson, Danny Ward and Alex Smithies. Whether that be spending countless hours at each other’s houses or taking trips away to Magaluf or Las Vegas, Sinnott would be part of the group, bringing that energy and smile. “I always called him ‘Sin’ but we also nicknamed him the Duracell bunny,” Stead chuckles. “You’d set him off and he’d just go. At 4am, we’d all be stumbling out of a club looking for food and then bed but Jordan would be wanting to know where was still open. The following morning, if we were away on holiday he’d be the one up at 8am, wideeyed asking for a pint with his breakfast. It was incredible, he just seemed to carry on forever.” Jordan also had some dance moves in his locker and was a “lover” of the 80s dance classics and true dancefloor fillers. Whether he had a drink in his hand or not, Jordan would be first on the dancefloor, no shame in sight. The midfielder’s stint at Huddersfield came to an end in 2015 and he went on to play for Altrincham, Halifax Town, Chesterfield, Alfreton Town and

JON STEAD then Matlock Town before the gut-wrenching and unthinkable happened.

about what was happening. I pulled up outside the hospital with my two stepbrothers and as we got there we saw Kelly and Jordan’s mum, Mel, at the door. I knew it wasn’t going to be a good ending. They took me straight in to see him and he was just there on his own in a room. It just looked like he was asleep. He was still all wired up and breathing with the machines so it was a really surreal way to see him. There were no marks on him, not battered and bruised, just laid there.”

After leaving The Vine pub in Retford, Nottinghamshire, in the early hours of 25 January, Jordan was the victim of a violent and drunken attack following a misinterpreted joke. The punches thrown by the attackers put Jordan in a critical condition and he was rushed to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield. It was a matchday and Stead was gearing up to play for Harrogate against Wrexham in the National League when he got the call from his stepbrother, Al Lee, who told him that Jordan was in the hospital. “I remember exactly where I was when Al rang,” Stead explains. “I was driving to the game and just as I’m getting to Wetherby Road, past the Kestrel pub, I get the call that Jordan was in the hospital. At that point, we didn’t really know how serious it actually was and there was the ‘he’ll be alright’ thought about it. Al did say he was in a bad way though and then everything was going through my mind, I’m filling up in the car thinking ‘what I do now?’.” Stead told his stepbrother that he was starting against Wrexham and that it would be “very late to let everybody down”. Jordan was stable and Stead could do nothing at the time so decided to play the match but would check his phone at every opportunity in case there was an update.

Jordan very sadly passed at 7pm that night, leaving Mel and Ian without their son, Stead and his mates without their best pal and Kelly without her fiancée and soon-to-be father to their daughter, Maisie. It was a heartbreaking period for everyone who knew Jordan, as Stead describes him as a “humble, lovely, happy and really kind lad you would just gravitate towards”. The humble lad from Bradford was also a caring one and a registered organ donor. After his death, Jordan helped save at least seven lives, while soldiers and other burn victims benefitted from Jordan’s decision after receiving skin grafts.

The Town striker admits that the game was simply a blur. “I played the game, and can’t remember anything of it. My mind was completely elsewhere. I spoke to Thirs [Paul Thirlwell] and he told me straight away I could go and be with him. I knew Jordan would want me to play though and there was nothing I could do at the hospital as they weren’t too sure what was going to happen. After the game, I went into the changing rooms and checked my phone straight away. I had a couple of missed calls from Kelly (Jordan’s fiancé) and I rang back straight away. She told me to come down to Sheffield Hospital quickly.” Stead now felt like he was now in a race against time to see his mate and he travelled from Harrogate to Sheffield in less than an hour. “I drove extremely illegally and all the way there I was in and out of being in tears thinking

Stead after scoring the first of his two goals against Chesterfield in a Man of the Match performance on what was a emotional night for the striker.

17

A TRIBUTE TO JORDAN SINNOTT

The days and weeks that followed were unimaginably tough for Jordan’s family and friends, Stead being no exception. Although he admits he’s never been a crier or an emotional person, the passing of such a close mate at such a young age brought out a different side in him. “I’ve never had to experience something like that before. To have a really close mate die so suddenly and so young, it was new to me. I had a very tough first week back in training, I think the Gaffer mentioned to me how quiet I was. It was almost like I was on autopilot and a zombie, not really thinking about anything. My thoughts were with Kelly, Ian and Mel, thinking they’ve got it bad. How does Kelly move on now? Jordan was her life moving forward and now she’s on her own. It was just a horrible thing to happen and definitely the toughest period of my life by far.”

Jordan’s funeral was held at Bradford City’s stadium, Valley Parade on 4 March 2020. Hundreds of people attend and all the shirts that had been donated were hanging from the ceiling, creating a truly remarkable spectacle. “Seeing all the shirts at the funeral in Bradford’s stadium, it was incredible,” Stead says with a smile. “They had them all strung up which needed about a kilometre of wire. It really was stunning, they had done a fantastic job. High profile players had got involved and then for me it was great to see the village and kid teams’ shirts being sent in, that was brilliant.”

Following Jordan’s death, his brother, Tom, appealed for football clubs to donate shirts to appear at the funeral.

The majority of the shirts were then donated to Comic Relief and sent to children across the world who could then wear them.

The campaign ‘Shirts for Jordan’ gained support from all over the world as clubs donated shirts with ‘Sinnott 25’ on the back. Rangers, Atletico Madrid, and Leeds United were just three of 862 shirts to be received.

For Stead, emotions would then be ramped up again just a couple of months later as he and his Town teammates made it to Wembley to compete in the National League Promotion final.

Other sports, including cricket, American football and basketball, were also represented in the

18

collection and some were sent from locations such as Bahrain, Qatar, Thailand, the Philippines and even the Chagos Archipelago, a string of islands in the Indian Ocean.

Stead had taken down a cut out of Jordan, who was in the stand behind the goal, watching his mate help make history for the football club.

JON STEAD The striker came on with 30 minutes to go with Town winning 2-1 and he admits that his mate was on his mind, especially when he had a great chance to score at the end Sinnott was sat in. “When I came on I was thinking about Jordan.” I had a real chance to score and as soon as it left my foot I thought it was in but as it bounced off the turf it just stayed and didn’t turn. I would have been straight into the stand to Jordan’s cutout if it had gone in.” At the full-time whistle, an emotional Stead made his way up to Jordan’s cut out and sat with him to show off his winners’ medal. It had been a tough six months for Stead and the win at Wembley brought out a range of feelings for the 38-year-old. “I was still grieving at this point but I was jubilant with the promotion,” he admits. “Half of me was thinking ‘why am I happy?’. It was a really weird mix of emotions. There was everything in one and it’s mad how you can feel so many things. From one morning feeling like crap and then suddenly feeling like I’m top of the world, it was so up and down.” The Jordan Sinnott Foundation Trust was set up in honour of Jordan soon after he passed and it’s there to keep his name going and create a real legacy. The foundation provides financial assistance to vulnerable and underprivileged children and young adults to help them access sports, leisure and exercise.

Stead admits that the foundation has been an “eye-opener” for everyone as a lot of work goes into making everything run smoothly. “It’s been a full-time commitment” but something everyone is really enjoying being a part of,” Stead says. “We’re all happy with the pace at which it’s going at, we’re raising funds, we’re making a difference but if anything, we could probably do with some more applications. We’ve got a little bit of money set aside now and we need people to start coming and asking for it.” The Coronavirus pandemic has put a halt on some events and fundraisers that were planned but a charity football match is set to take place in August against a West Yorkshire Police team and then there’s a golf day and annual ball to come as well. The charity has also had support from some big names including Arsenal legend Ian Wright, who is a patron for the Trust. He invited Mel onto his podcast ‘Everyday People’ and it was a chance for Mel to tell her story and get the word out about the Foundation Trust. Wright has since donated a signed shirt to be auctioned and Stead is thankful that big names like Wright are wanting to support the work they’re doing. “It’s a big thing to get him on as a patron. He was really interested and supportive of the story and everything that has happened. It gives us that awareness but we’re not going to go mad with it though and try to run before we can walk. With grassroots sports reopening, clubs will need some help. Even if it’s a Sunday League team that needs a kit and 15 shirts, we can provide that. It’s what the charity is there for.” Anyone wanting to find out more about the Jordan Sinnott Foundation Trust can do so by visiting www.js25.co.uk/ and by following @JSFTrust on Twitter and Instagram. Jordan’s memory will live on, not only through the charity but through the gift he gave to Kelly, their beautiful daughter Maisie Jordan Sinnott. Rest in Peace, Jordan ‘Sin’ Sinnott.

TODAY’S OPPOSITION

BRADFORD CITY

Bradford City’s roots are deeply set in Rugby League. With the Football League keen to encourage Association Football in the county, they elected Bradford City into Division Two in place of Doncaster Rovers, and a few days later Manningham FC’s committee decided to switch their club code from Rugby League to Association Football. Thus in 1903, Bradford City AFC was born, inheriting both Manningham’s colours and Valley Parade.

After winning the Division Two title in 1907-08 and with it promotion, Bradford recorded their highest ever finish of 5th in 1910-11, but the highlight of that season was their FA Cup success against Newcastle United. Bradford were relegated in 1921-22 and again to Division Three (North) in 1926-27. After promotion two seasons later, Bradford then spent the next eight seasons in Division Two before dropping back to Division Three (North) in 1936-37. Bradford were placed into the newly created Division Three in 1958-59 and spent the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s yo-yoing between the third and fourth tiers. They returned to Division Two in 1984-85 under Trevor Cherry, although the season’s celebrations were overshadowed by the Valley Parade Fire in the final game of the season. Bradford reached the play-offs in 1987-88 before relegation two years later which became Division Two with the creation of the Premier League. Chris Kamara took

Bradford back up to the second tier via the play-offs before Paul Jewel took over in January 1998 and guided Bradford into the Premier League and a first spell in the top flight for 77 years. After securing their Premier League status on the last day of 1999-2000, they were relegated the following season.

The next season they were placed into administration, and two years later suffered another relegation before a third relegation in seven seasons came in 2006-07. Since then Bradford have had lengthy spells in League Two and back up in League One after Phil Parkinson took them up via the 2012-13 play-offs. That season they also became the first fourth tier club since Rochdale in 1962 to reach the League Cup Final, although they lost 5-0 to Swansea. Their latest stay in League One finished with relegation in 2018-19 and after being one of the pre-season favourites for promotion last season, Bradford started well but results tailed off and after replacing Gary Bowyer with Stuart McCall they finished ninth on points per game. After a poor first half to this season and a run of six defeats on the bounce, Stuart McCall was replaced by the duo of Mark Trueman and Conor Sellars in December and that has seen a huge turnaround in form, with Bradford winning 13 out of 24 games and losing just five and putting themselves in play-off contention.

TOWN LADIES

Town U16 Girls restart season with a thumping win Town U16 Girls 7 v 0 Horsforth SM

Town Girls U16s returned to league action for the first time in 2021 with a home game against Horsforth St Margarets. Town exploded out of the blocks as Liv Johnson scored after just 54 seconds. Horsforth SM came back strongly into the game but the Harrogate defence stood strong and doubled their lead on 20 minutes, Niamh Tyssen’s through ball finished with aplomb by Eva Jenkins. It was soon 3v0 as Ciara Streatfield hooked in a cross from the byline which was volleyed home at close range by Jenkins. Jenkins completed her hattrick from an assist by Maddie Ashby and then Tyssen made it 5v0 running on to a beautiful ball from the back from Robyn McKendrick. Having been foiled a few times by Horsforth’s

excellent goalkeeper, Lydia Corner got her reward with a fine strike nestling in the top corner. Liv Johnson finished what she started with a powerful low strike from outside the area to wrap up a 7v0 victory. Much credit goes to a Horsforth SM side who, without any substitutes, never gave up throughout and forced Town goalkeeper Taia Port into some important saves. LEAGUE TWO ROUND UP

A LOOK OVER TUESDAY NIGHT’S GAMES IN LEAGUE TWO

Bolton players celebrate Lloyd Isgrove’s winner at Salford

Bolton Wanderers closed the gap on the Sky Bet League Two leaders with a 1-0 win at Salford City. Lloyd Isgrove put the visitors ahead with a low strike in the 23rd minute after a well-worked free-kick picked out the midfielder. The Trotters moved to within a point of Cambridge and two behind leaders Cheltenham, who have a match in hand. Play-off hopefuls Tranmere Rovers lost 1-0 at Walsall, where they saw midfielder Jay Spearing dismissed during the second half. Emmanuel Osadebe made the breakthrough with 20 minutes left when he drilled in a 25-yard effort which came off the underside of the crossbar. In Tuesday night’s earlier kick-off, Morecambe thumped Scunthorpe United 4-1 at the Globe Arena. Cole Stockton fired the hosts in front in the 25th minute, with midfielder Carlos Mendes Gomes adding another shortly before half-time. Iron defender Jacob Bedeau saw the ball go into the net for an own goal from a corner just four minutes into the second half. Yann Songo’o added a fourth on the hour following a quick free-kick. Scunthorpe substitute Alfie Beestin scored a late consolation, slotting in a rebound after his initial shot was saved. Newport County were held to a goalless draw at home by Carlisle United, but that was enough to move them up to sixth above Forest Green Rovers. Barrow beat Exeter City 2-1 to pull further clear of the drop zone in the fight to stay up. Patrick Brough broke the deadlock just before the break and Scott Quigley made sure of victory when he knocked in from a free-kick during stoppage time. Exeter defender Pierce Sweeney grabbed a late consolation shortly before the final whistle.

Crawley Town won 2-0 at Bradford City with goals in each half from defenders Jordan Tunnicliffe and Joe McNerney. Harrogate Town twice fought back to draw 2-2 against Leyton Orient at the EnviroVent Stadium. Conor Wilkinson broke the deadlock just a minute after the restart to give the O’s the lead with a low effort from 20 yards, but Dan Jones levelled just before the hour. Danny Johnson put Orient back in front in the 63rd minute, before Harrogate were awarded a penalty, which Jack Muldoon saw saved. Harrogate, though, did soon force an equaliser when winger Josh McPake cut in from the left with 15 minutes to go.

HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY FOOTBALL AT HOME The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform your garden into a proper footy pitch.

Oldham Athletic

Tuesday 20th April 2021 - League Two, 7pm After relegation from League One in 2018, Oldham Athletic began life in the fourth tier with a 14th place finish in 2018-19 before a 19th place finish last season under a series of managers including Frankie Bunn and Paul Scholes before Harry Kewell took over in the summer, becoming the Latics fifth manager in 12 months. Celebrating their 125th anniversary this season, Oldham have had a strange campaign where inconsistency has been the main issue. Whilst they have gone on numerous runs without a win during the season including starting the campaign without a victory in six, they have also picked up superb wins over the likes of Cheltenham, Exeter, Cambridge, Newport, Salford and Carlisle. Kewell was relieved of his duties as manager in early March after a run of one win in six and replaced by the experienced Keith Curle. He will be keen on preparing for next season and ending

the campaign on a high and a finish in the top half of the table which they’re on course to do with two resounding wins in the last two games. In the reverse fixture on Boxing Day, Town came away from Boundary Park with a 2-1 victory courtesy of a brace from George Thomson in either half after Conor McAleny had given the Latics an early lead from the penalty spot in the 19th minute whilst Bobby Grant also got his marching orders just before half time.

Saturday 24th April 2021 - League Two, 3pm After finishing last season 18th, Chris Beech set about re-building his squad over the summer and Carlisle had been enjoying a superb season, showing consistency particularly at home. A 2-0 win at Walsall on January 2nd sent the Cumbrians top of Sky Bet League Two surpassing most bookies’ pre-season expectations. But then Coronavirus and the British Winter hit where Carlisle played just three games in the next seven weeks, which meant they dropped to 9th but still just seven points off top with five games in hand. But a major dip in form of just two wins in 14 games in February and March including nine defeats left them well off the pace and even in danger of missing out on the play-offs. However, a run of three 2-0 wins on the trot and two draws in late March/early April has seen them get right back into contention for the play-offs. 46

When the two teams finally met in the reverse fixture at The EnviroVent Stadium in mid-February after an abandonment due to a frozen pitch and a postponemnet due to a powercut, Town came away with a 1-0 win courtesy of a Josh March penalty in the 28-minute. For Town it was a third win in four, whilst for Carlisle, it was a second loss in a row and the beginning of their poor run of form. They will be looking to avenge that defeat and continue their charge for the play-offs.
