ince I last wrote groups have been running more and more successful Temporary Campsites and members have been supporting them well and enjoying themselves. I hope that we are now over the worst and that this continues to happen. One thing to mention is that this could not happen without the group committees, rally hosts and other members who volunteer. It is getting towards the time for group AGMs and I would just like to comment that without members being happy to serve on the committees the groups could not exist. Please attend if possible and also check with your group to see if there is anything you can do to help. Hosts are always needed for TCs (rallies). I hope you continue to enjoy your motorhomes and have good times away in superb venues.

CLUB NEWS OBITUARIES RAY HANSELL It is with deep regret that Nene Valley have to announce the sad news that Ray passed away on 18th July in hospital. He was admitted to hospital suffering from coronavirus, but unfortunately he wasn’t strong enough to beat it. Ray was a gentleman through and through and was liked by everyone. Rest in peace Ray, we’ll all miss you and send our love and thoughts to Mary and family.
Time for tea! Recruitment stand update
T
his year we have been at three shows with no tea tent, but boy have we been busy. Peterborough had all eight of us rushed off our feet all weekend. What a great start signing up so many new members and lots of those are new to motorcaravanning. We signed up several YouTubers at that show, one of which are Dan and Mazzy, who have recently done a video promoting our great Club entitled 'Why You Should Join The Motor Caravanners’ Club', check it out. This was so popular that both the stand and the office have
been inundated with new members. We hope they all enjoy our Club. We then went on to Stoneleigh and Newbury, both shows as busy as the first. At last we have been allowed to open our tea tent at the Norfolk show and as all of our volunteers have been double jabbed we felt it was time to get it going again. We hope that all of our members both new and long standing will have enjoyed their weekends and hope that the year continues to improve for all. Recruitment team

MILLIE PARKER It is with much regret that the Yorkshire group have had to say goodbye to Millie Parker who recently died suddenly. Millie and her husband Mike joined the group in 2010 and shortly after they both served on the committee, Millie as entertainments officer and Mike as the rally officer, where they both did excellent work. Millie often set quizzes for us to struggle with. She stood no nonsense with dissenters. They always brought their dog to the meets and you would often see Millie out walking their dog in all weather. She will be sorely missed by all and we pass on our sympathies to Mike and family. CLUB NEWS: OBITUARIES
Tribute paid to Alec Chislhom 'a true Anglia Group legend' It is with great regret that the Anglia Group report the death of Alec Chislhom, aged 90 years. For those of you fortunate enough to have encountered Alec, you may or may not know that Alec was perhaps the driving force behind the resurrection of the Anglia Group. After two false starts, Anglia became a force in the annals of the MCC, led by Alec and his late wife Mary's drive and enthusiasm, with the help and backing of other notable members. He served as Group Chairman on two separate occasions and in 1998 became our Honorary President, a role he was greatly proud of. Who can forget his wonderful motorhome, a stand out Cotswold on a Mercedes base. A big van Alec and Mary cherished and in which they spent many winters in Mojácar, Spain. He always returned from those Spanish jaunts ready to help the group, including as Chairman. He led the Anglia Group in 1995 when the Club AGM was held at Norwich Showground for the first time, when we celebrated with what was probably the first themed National, the 50th anniversary celebration of VE Day. After the loss of his wife
Alec with his late wife, Mary
Alec gradually withdrew from the scene and eventually sold his beloved motorhome. He did however maintain his interest in the group and its activities and members. He will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with his two sons and family at this time of great sadness. Tony Chapman

CLUB NEWS Agenda Item 7: Members standing for election to Council of Management. (See Appendix A) There are two vacancies on the CoM due to members retiring. Council of management is set at 15 people to carry out all duties. Applicants: Keith Poole; Peter Johnston and Marie Johnston Unsuccessful applicant: Marie Johnson. Chairperson Kate Jones gave a warm welcome the two new members onto the Council of Management. Kate also thanked Marie Johnston for putting herself forward to stand for a position on CoM. The Secretary closed the meeting at 7.15pm. Dated this fourteenth day of July 2021. By Order of the Council of Management. Mr Ronald Harris, Company Secretary
MEMBERS MEETING Minutes of the online Zoom meeting held at 7.15pm on Wednesday 14th July 2021 Chairperson Kate Jones opened the meeting at 7.15pm and explained that all the questions raised today would be discussed at the next CoM meeting and the answers would be published in the October’s monthly magazine and on the Club’s website. Sue Turl (Avon Group) submitted two questions to be raised. Q1 Would Council of Management please clarify their policy regarding the holding and refusal for Groups to hold T.C's in other Groups areas. It is my understanding that a directive given by CoM remains whereby a Group may hold a T.C. in another Group’s area providing there is one free weekend between T.C.'s held at the same venue.
Permission having previously been sought and given in writing or if refused a notice sent stating the reason why. If this is no longer to be the case would CoM please define their policy on this matter with special regard given to any valid reasons for Groups to refuse other Groups permission. Kate asked if there were any other comments from the represented Groups at the meeting. Sue Turl raised concern that she would like an answer as soon as possible as she is awaiting replies from other Groups about rallies that she wishes to book soon. Chairperson explained that there are rules already in place. All Groups should be following the rules and respond to any requests for rallies within their Group’s area stating Yes or No and give a reason why they will not allow the rally to take place. There is a template that should be filled out and sent by email. William Steel (Rally Officer) stated that he had not received the template. Chair stated that there were issues with some of the company emails but the forms have been sent to the Group Secretaries and that they can get the forms by email from them. Q2 After Government has lifted all restrictions relating to the Coronavirus pandemic, can it be left to the decision of individual Groups as to whether they choose to adopt the pre booking of places
for their T.C.? Tony Heal (H&S Officer): This subject was discussed at our last CoM meeting. Groups will be able to continue to accept bookings for their rallies if they wish, but they do not have to use the booking system as of Monday 19th July 2021. You will be able to organise non-bookable rallies. It will be up to the individual Groups to make that decision. I feel it would be wise to continue with the bookable system till the end of this year and go back to the nonbookable rallies at the start of 2022. Chair: Stated that if the venue only allows a small number of units then it will be wise to make it a bookable rally, but we do need to return to non-bookable as that is what the Club is known for and people like to just turn up without having to book. Barbara Noble (SWP Secretary): Q3. Can we now stop Track & Trace? Tony Heal: We would encourage you to continue with Track & Trace to assist the government, use QR Codes and keep a record of all members and day visitors that are on site. Ron Harris (Club Secretary): Q4 Do we need to continue with sanitation stations and general hygiene by Elsans etc? Tony Heal: Yes I feel that we need to continue supplying sanitation stations as we have been doing. Bill Hanby (Chair N. Counties): Q5. Can we now relax the rules regarding Day Visitors and allow them to visit the rallies?

CLUB NEWS Tony Heal: Yes as of Monday 19th 2021 you can allow Day Visitors but use the Track & Trace. Steve Wynn (Chiltern Secretary): Q6. Are people allowed to go into each other’s motorhomes and awnings? Tony Heal: Yes that rule has been relaxed but we must be sensible as some people will not want to encourage visitors into their immediate space and that should be respected. Peter Heale (MCC Webmaster): These rules that you have discussed do not include Wales, Scotland & Northern Ireland. When you cross the borders you must abide by the rules of these areas. May I also re-visit an earlier point that I have listed for the Yorkshire rally officer the name of Charles Gothorpe not William Steel. Ron Harris: Can all Group Secretaries please send into the office all names and contact details for their Group Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and Rally Officer so we can update our records. Graham Kendall MCG Chair): Q7 Can you please discuss at the September CoM meeting the single supplement for members attending the 2022 National? Anne Taylor (National Rally Chair): At the moment we do not have single supplements for the National Rally but we will discuss this at the next CoM meeting. Brian Graves (Kent Group Chair): Q8 Would you consider a family
Thank you for your support Firstly, I’d like to congratulate Peter and Keith for getting elected to CoM and to thank you all so much for your votes. I had phone calls from many of you to kindly offer commiserations but I genuinely was not disappointed at the outcome. When we sent in our resumes in January 2020 we didn’t know if any members were actually going to stand down but applied to register our interest and show our willingness to serve on CoM at some point. Our membership has given us many wonderful times and great memories and we would like to give something back to the Club. The Covid pandemic put a stop to the AGM that year and also caused huge disruption to the normal activities of the MCC and our regional groups. With no rallies and largely being housebound I had forgotten all about it and was really surprised to see the 2021 AGM agenda! After the results were announced, I was very pleased to see that Peter had been elected to CoM and I am sure he will make a strong contribution once he finds his feet. We are a strong team and I will be happy to support and assist him in any way possible (protocol permitting). Once again, Peter and I thank you for your support and for continuing to support the MCC as we all now look forward to the resumption of normal life. Onwards and upwards!! Marie Johnston, Anglia Group membership for the children of members who own caravans to be allowed to rally with their families? Q9 Can the minutes of the CoM meetings be published on the Club’s website?
Q12 Are there plans to revise the format of the National Rally to make it more attractive to members? If not, how long will it be allowed to continue running at a loss?
Q10 Can the requests for change submitted by Groups please be submitted on the Club’s webpage along with CoM’s decision explaining their rational?
Chair Kate Jones: The CfG was totally revised last year and a new copy was posted on the website which can be downloaded. All the above questions will be added to the list for the next meeting.
Q11 Is there an intention for the CfG to be reviewed in its entirety to ensure that it is keeping pace and fit for purpose?
Chair asked if there were any more questions and then closed the meeting at 7.45pm

A CAMPSITE WITH A DIFFERENCE... LeoBay is quite unique as it is a campsite with fitting facilities, so if there’s that little something you need doing from replacing a bulb to a complete conversion we do it all. Our experience goes back 40 years. Our core experience is in auto electrics and vehicle security as well as vehicle diagnostics, we use factory diagnostic software to solve your problems. Trained in both vehicle and mains voltages we can also inspect and test your mains hook up too! Gas that’s no problem either! Now there’s a service that makes life simple, so next time you need help, come and stay at LeoBay, a nice cuppa on arrival, we will sort your problems while you relax on our 1st class site. There’s even a courtesy vehicle to use during your stay at LeoBay! LeoBay is a site in a million, completely built by us and independent, so all are
welcome whether you’re a club member or not. We have drawn on our 25 years as motorhomers, collating all the best bits from the many sites we have visited over the years. The pitches are all wide hardstanding, with a 10amp hook up and your own grass area to spread out on, the site sits up on a hill over looking the sea with amazing views. On site facilities include a unique summer kitchen, where everyone can chat, relax and eat under cover, there’s a barbeque and pizza oven for you to use, or sit and relax by the open fire with a bottle or two. We like to make sure you’re warm and comfortable so the shower block is heated, with two large rooms, and to top it off the gardens are just splendid. Pets are welcome; the dog walks along the shore are great, there’s plenty of wildlife to watch. So as you can see it’s well worth a visit at just £18 per night all in.

Auto-Sleeper no 1. Note the fold-down tent annexe attached to the rear
Auto-Sleepers celebrate A 60 years in the business Gentleman Jack tells the story of the longest established British volume motorcaravan converter…

uto-Sleepers didn’t land on the planet as a fullyformed motorcaravan manufacturer. Their very first motorcaravan was a DIY build on a Morris J2 by newly-retired, ex-steel company director and designer Calverley Trevelyan. It was built to take his family on an extended touring holiday in France. Presumably he decided to build his own as opposed to just buying (say) a Martin Walter Dormobile, because he could! Back in Blighty after the holiday, Calverly decided to sell the converted Morris J2 to Henlys of Bristol. They were so impressed with the level of ingenuity and build quality that they immediately ordered five more to be built on the Austin version. As soon as the five had been completed, Henlys ordered twelve more. This couldn’t be fulfilled as a DIY exercise so Calverley joined forces with local builder Bob Halling, bought an old building in Manchester for £99 and in 1961 Auto-Sleepers began production. Groovy baby Throughout the 1960s Auto-Sleeper motorcaravans captured the essence
of newly found freedoms. There had been a warp-factor increase in the amount of our leisure time and also to our disposable income. Stuffy attitudes of the austere 1950s had been blown away by a new informality. This was coupled with a desire among ordinary folk to travel both at home, and for the first time ever, abroad. The company went from strength to strength, and quickly outgrew their small factory. They eventually settled in a small village near Broadway in the Cotswolds which became the site of their new expanded operation. They’ve been
there ever since, which is why I frequently refer to their products as ‘Broadway Babes’! Throughout the 1960s AutoSleepers’ old loyalties meant that they remained wedded to the Commer PB as a base vehicle and that they didn’t even consider the ‘new fangled’ Ford Transit. A full order book appears to have vindicated their decision. Anyway, the Commer was held in high regard. In this sector it was the first panel van in which it was possible to sleep transversely. Further, the mechanicals were reliable, the petrol engine was a smooth (if rather thirsty) unit and a Laycock overdrive unit was available. However, it was >>

the diesel option that turned heads. Commer chose to use the Perkins 4-108 engine which was willing, economical and absolutely bombproof. Raising the roof One of the advantages Auto-Sleeper owners enjoyed over owners of other rising-roof motorcaravans was the design and construction of the roof itself. It consisted of solid hinged sides with a lift that operated as a parallelogram. The others made do with a bit of canvas to form the walls. The Auto-Sleeper roof provided better thermal insulation and consequently there were no condensation problems. Also, many a romantically involved couple were grateful for its acoustic insulation properties during moments of high passion.
Conventionally-built coachbuilts using bonded sandwich panels continue to this day. One of their most successful has been the Nuevo. This is an early 2002 model.
Commer’s crown slips The complete domination of Commer in the 1960s gave way to a more pluralistic approach towards base vehicles in the 1970s. Commer continued to sell in meaningful numbers, Leyland Sherpa-based models had their adherents and the Ford Transit started making inroads. All were in for a rude awakening though when Luton based Bedford unveiled their CF rival to Ford’s Transit. It demonstrated itself to be so totally superior to anything else >>

on the market that it became the default choice for the majority of Auto-Sleeper purchasers. While Ford were still slavishly fitting the unsophisticated and sometimes troublesome V4 engine, Bedford came out with a range of petrol engines that for the first time gave a 'van the performance of a car…and then some. Auto-Sleeper Bedford CF’s started as a range of elevating-roof models, these were quickly joined by an elegant GRP high-top offering full standing height and finally in 1977, by their first coachbuilt, the CB22. This was an important development for Auto-Sleepers as they were haemorrhaging sales to go-ahead rivals Autohomes (previously CI Motorised and CI Autohomes) because they had pioneered the (soon to be popular) cab-over style with their Autohome/Motorhome/ Travelhome ranges.
FOUR THAT GOT AWAY All deserved a longer production run. However, and for a variety of reasons, they were short-lived. Three are based on the VW Transporter. The high-top model is not a long wheelbase Topaz, because back then Volkswagen said that that they were not going to build any long wheelbase Transporter panel vans. Thus Auto-Sleepers fabricated their own rear pod extension to form the pictured Trophy …and then VW changed their mind, and the Topaz was born. The one with the red stripes is a long wheelbase, rear washroom, year 2000 Sherbourne. The other is a Sandhurst from 2009, complete with Al-Ko wide-track rear chassis and a rather hefty price tag. Thus, it didn’t sell well in the teeth of the last economic recession. Finally, the ‘A’-class which was actually an Italian-built Marquis Mirage but – as can been seen – with a luxurious Auto-Sleeper interior. Should have flown out of the dealers, but it didn’t! Cracking pre-owned buy now though!
Marvellous monocoques After the encouraging success of their first coachbuilt, Auto-Sleepers decided to employ the services of automotive designer William Towns (of Aston Martin Lagonda fame) to come up with a new design for a different type of body. The result was a one-piece moulded >> September 2021 MOTOR CARAVANNER 23
DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY GRP coachbuilt. In one swoop Auto-Sleeper set the standard with their Bedford CF based SV100 and Clubman, No angular joins, in fact no joins at all, curvy and fluid lines, strong and leak proof… what a body! It is a common misconception that Auto-Sleeper monocoques didn’t change over the years, they did. However, it was by ‘evolution’ not ‘revolution’. In the late 1990s rising development costs forced a change of thinking at Auto-Sleepers. Slowly the monocoques were replaced by conventionally built slab-sided
CARAVAN & CAMPING
models using bonded sandwich panels. Staying power 60 years on Auto-Sleepers are very much ‘still here’ and although their market share has declined slightly, they are still popular with British purchasers… including me. They’ve survived floods, a disastrous fire and some questionable changes of ownership. Today they are rock-solid and part of the global Trigano group.
Left: The Sprinter wasn’t the only Mercedes base utilised for their motorcaravans, this delightful 1997 Montana is based on a Mercedes Vito. Above: And finally…we like Auto-Sleeper motorcaravans, our favourite conversion out of those we’ve owned was this 1998 Medallion. The VW LT base was unreliable though, chewing its way through lots of expensive parts :-(

The hairless chair
I
n the July issue of the magazine there was an ode to the Hairy Chair telling members of the West Country Group Chairman’s plan to raise funds for a charity by having all his hair removed. Although still displaying his rings on his hands the Hairy Chair is now the Hairless Chair with Bob having allowed members to cut off a piece of his hair for a donation to charity. The great haircut took place at the Exmouth Ruby Club ate a West Country Group Temporary Campsite. The event was supported not just by West Country members but by members from 13 other Groups, not only in the removal of the flowing locks but also in a book sale and auction of items.
To make life easier, and possibly safer, for Bob his hair was plaited into a myriad of tiny plaits in the afternoon. The evening came and members were invited to step forward and remove one of these plaits for a contribution. Encouraged by others the activity was popular and this plus the auction that followed raised £613. Donations also came as follows: the book sale raised £35.43, another £5.70 was placed in the charity box so £654.13 was raised on the day. But, this was not all, a feature on the Travel Trolls YouTube and donations from friends raised £905 and there was £378.25 in the funds from before covid. This resulted in there being a running total of £1937.38 which will go to the charity which is The
Children’s Holiday Foundation, North Devon. Thank you to all who supported this good cause.

Thirty-two vans joined Anglia for the six-day meet with visitors from East Midlands, Yorkshire, Essex and Northern Counties, five first timers and one who joined at the rally. Teresa arranged a fish and chip order for Friday evening and they were very good. Saturday most went into town whilst others soaked up the sunshine. Carol bought a budgerigar in town having smuggled a cage on board when Derek wasn’t looking! Well whatever floats your boat! Saturday night David Seals sang for us in the hall with the music drifting across the field. Sunday morning Keith and Brian cooked free bacon rolls for all. Some went home whilst most walked into town for a roast dinner and at night David and Pat Hill from Essex provided music. Monday there were six games of bingo turning into a good night for Teresa who had three houses and a line. Tuesday hot weather to start but a storm in the afternoon really dampened the ground. Wednesday those of us left went in to town and in the evening played the Dice Game. A great break. Thanks to Brian, Jenny, Terresa, Keith plus Derek and Carol for taking the money before leaving on Sunday. Forty-four vans came to Sheringham for the pre Norwich Show TC. We had nine first timers and visitors from East Midlands, Chiltern, Essex, Severn Valley and Yorkshire. It was a very free and easy week with members going into town and further afield to Cromer, Norwich as well as riding the North Norfolk Railway to Holt. Unfortunately the weather was not kind enough to be able to put on any outside activities since of course we did not have the use of the hall but it did not stop everyone from enjoying themselves.
All units were parked in straight lines without the use of an infra red theodolite and despite a member's comments on Facebook no one suffered from OCD as a result. Seriously though, we have to abide by the rules as laid down by DEFRA as indeed do all clubs as a condition of their licence, so that there is access at all times for vehicles to move out in a safe manner. Can you imagine the chaos if we all parked where we liked? Thanks to Keith, Teresa, Derek, Carol, Tony and Carole for a great rally. Another reminder to all members that bookings are being taken for the Xmas Party at Wells on the 4th December, and New Year at Terrington. Contact Carol or Derek on dereksherman41@gmail.com or 01473 620933. Members are reminded that the AGM is in October and nominations will be required for officer posts. This will be put up at Burnt House as usual. Upcoming TCs: 9-13 September at Burnt House Farm, Witnesham IP6 9JE. Starts 1pm. 1-3 October is a new venue at Acle Academy, South Walsham Road, Acle NR13 3ER. This venue replaces Sir Harry Smith college at Whittlesey.
AVON The Beehive Field, Bradford-on-Avon Rally was a huge success and well attended. The field was superb and our members had many options of things to do in the lovely sunshine. Some took advantage of going to either Trowbridge or Bath on the bus which stopped outside the site, or a meander along the canal towpath to Bradford-on-Avon. Each evening we had a get-together (socially distanced) and were entertained by our very own DJ, Mark, who also regaled us with many funny jokes. Carol, our very talented poetess, gave us some of her latest renditions. One night we had a nostalgia quiz which was >> September 2021 MOTOR CARAVANNER 29
GROUP NEWS won by Leroyd and Enid and Kevin won the last person standing ticket. Our evenings concluded by watching the International Space Station fly over and members were amazed to discover we could still see it when in fact it was flying over Poland. On the Sunday afternoon, we all enjoyed a glass (or two) of Pimms which received many compliments. Our thanks go to our assistants, Mark, Penny and Mike. Richard & Caroline Upcoming TCs: 9-12 September at The Cross Keys Inn, East Lydford. 23-26 September at Frome Cricket Club. 7-10 September at Sharpness Docks Workers Club. NB all TCs for the remainder of 2021 must be pre-booked, giving at least 48 hours notice before the start via our secretary Kay Norman. Tel 01278 685449 or email: avon18sec@gmail.com.
CHILTERN Following 'Freedom Day' the Chiltern Committee have decided to relax all the previous COVID restrictions on their TCs with the exceptions that all meets for the remainder of 2021 will be bookable via Julie Noakes (details on our website) and we will continue to collect monies in cash in a sealed envelope. Only one TC to report on this month. Thanks to Linda and Roger Green for the following words: What a beautiful weekend we had in Bourton on the Water, fabulous weather, great company and a fantastic place. 42 vans arrived between Thursday and Friday, 24 Chiltern and 18 visitors, one from Spain, one Nene Valley, three Lancashire, four East Wessex, two West Wessex, two East Midlands, two Severn Valley, two Avon and one Essex. Among those were 10 first timers with Chiltern. The village was extremely busy due to the weather and atmosphere of the place, many youngsters and a few dads in the river having a great time. One of the sad parts of the weekend was discovering the large fish and chip shop at the far end of the main road was closed down, but hopefully will reopen eventually under new ownership. Many thanks to Steve, Marion, Roy and Carole, who celebrated her birthday on Sunday, for all their hard work and for taking over this rally at the last minute when we were unable to do so. Upcoming TCs: 9-13 September at Home Farm, Stoke Bruerne NN12 7SD. 7-10 October at Valley Farm Campsite, Farmoor OX2 9NL. 15-17 October at St Peter’s School, Old Windsor SL4 2QY (AGM).

Beckingham – After a lovely morning the rain poured just as the vans began to arrive. There were 22 vans, 21 East Midlands and one Nene Valley. Everyone was looking forward to our first rally with a hall. On Friday the chairperson, Anne, welcomed everyone. The stewards Brian, Yvonne, Dave and Jean organised a game of bingo and there was a general knowledge quiz which, after numerous tiebreaks, was won by Carol and Dave’s table. Then it was over to Les who compered the karaoke. On Saturday morning there was a coffee morning after which some members travelled into Gainsborough and some went to the nearby garden centre for lunch. In the afternoon Dave organised a game of lawn darts which was won by Geoff and Ann. Saturday evening we were entertained by Elle Davies. Some members left us on Sunday after the coffee morning but on Sunday evening Brian and Yvonne arranged a game of Scattergories which was won by Brenda’s table and also had a few games of card bingo. The members were very impressed with the venue and hope we use it again soon. Yvonne B Upcoming TCs: 3-5 September at Sports & Community Centre, Grassthorpe Lane, Sutton on Trent. EAST WESSEX Plenty to report this month. Twelve vans came to Leylands Field, Lymington, and it was a pleasure to meet three new East Wessex members, Pam, Trish and Sylvia. It was so nice to be able to sit outside until dusk, catching up with friends old and new. Some went cycling or walking in the forest whilst
others enjoyed the town market and harbourside activities. Debbie and Roger had a successful time geocaching and another member, no names mentioned, went off with fishing rod in hand looking to catch his tea, and was later spotted barbecuing – a steak. Oh dear, better luck next time! We managed to squeeze in a raffle before the England match beckoned and people vanished inside to enjoy the football. A new venue, Middle Wallop Army Flying Museum, saw 18 vans, including visitors from Avon, West Country, West Wessex and Chiltern groups turn out for a fantastic weekend, the hottest of the year so far, with temperatures well into the 30s. Pitched next to the airfield we had a ringside seat as helicopters, planes and gliders took off and landed. The popular onsite café did a brisk trade in cooked breakfasts thanks to our members, and the museum gave us a very good deal on annual tickets. By Saturday afternoon, many were wilting in the heat and sat quietly snoozing under their awnings. By evening it cooled enough for a get together, until huge maybugs arrived causing much hilarity as we tried to dodge them. Everyone agreed that this was a great venue and we will definitely be back. The third rally was at Burnham Copse School, Tadley attended by 14 vans, one visiting from East Midlands. Some of us caught the bus into Basingstoke whilst others visited a nearby National Trust property as the rain hammered down and temperatures dropped. The brief lull in the rain was too brief for Allen and Dave out on their bikes and they got soaked. Luckily, the school's outside shelter allowed us to get together in the dry in the evenings, though blankets, scarves, hats and mitts were dug out from the backs of cupboards. Larry did a couple of quizzes and card bingo, which, after a gap of 18 months, made us feel that maybe life is getting back to normal. Please note the TC at Wootey Junior School, Alton has been cancelled.
Upcoming TCs: (Both with use of halls, if allowed). 17-19 September at Ringwood Junior School, Hightown Road, Ringwood, Hants BH24 1NH. To book: phone 07802 321304. 1-3 October at Rodborough Academy, Rake Lane, Milford, GU8 5BZ. Trains to Guildford and fishing lakes nearby. Further details will be posted on our website: www.eastwessex.moonfruit.com. All are welcome. Before setting out please check the website for any last-minute changes.
ESSEX Another great temporary campsite at Grange Farm for Essex. Our first visit this year to this site. It was a good turnout and good to see many friends again and catch up on what members had been doing during lockdown. As this was a commercial campsite we all had the luxury of electricity. Friday evening we had very heavy rain and thought we would be flooded, in fact at the bottom of the field we were as three members were surrounded by water. Fortunately it drained away very quickly but some of their equipment outside did get wet, luckily on Saturday we had good weather to dry it out. One of the units had his canopy out with wind blockers on and it rained that heavy they soaked up the water and made his canopy collapse, in doing so it twisted the canopy and bent the legs; I hope he has now been able to sort it out. Also, another member (not naming any names, Nigel) forgot to put their fanlights down and informed us they had a wet bed that they could not sleep on but Barbara contradicted him to say it was only a little bit wet and that he exaggerated. Saturday saw the sunshine and social distancing we had a game of bingo with the owner's permission, with a sound system so that members could be spread out across the field (My wife won. Sorry, forgot the others). In the evening at the local club there was a singer and members said it was very good. Sunday we had a coffee morning with members bringing their own coffee and the raffle was drawn. >>

GROUP NEWS Some members stayed until Monday. Clair Priory was a bookable temporary campsite because of Covid rules and also the site is very small although lovely. It was quite a surprise the day before to be told because of a dangerous tree having had a branch come down some of the field was roped off but with careful siting by the committee marshals everyone was accommodated. Unfortunately, our Chairman Bob could not attend as he had Covid so no Chairman's Waffle on Sunday. As it was a lovely day, after parking their motohomes everyone was outside enjoying the sunshine. Saturday was hot and sunny and there was a market in Clair at which some members bought South American-style hooded ponchos. In the town hall there was a table top sale with some interesting items. Clair is a lovely little town with some unusual shops. There is an antiques centre, not sure if anyone purchased an antique. The disused railway station is now a cafe with a children's park area. The castle is a ruin and to get there it is very steep but the view is amazing. Saturday early evening most members were outside their motorhomes with their bar-b-ques and tables were set out under the trees. Once dinner was over we made our way to the marshall's motorhome and sat around in small groups. We had a quick quiz by Nick, not sure who won but my team did not. Thank you, Nick. The raffle was drawn. As the sun went down we saw the South American-style ponchos coming out and very colourful they were too. Sunday, again the weather was very hot and sunny, unfortuntely, I had to leave early to dog sit for my daughter. Great venue and good company. John Upcoming TCs: 10-12 September at Pleshey. 17-20 September at Grange Farm, Thorple le Soken. 8-10 October is our AGM at Chelmer Valley School, Chelmsford. 22-24 October at Blenheim Primary School, Leigh on Sea (TBC). All pre-bookable.
KENT Following a very wet start to the Broadstairs TC, we move to the hottest weekend of the year so far at Hole Park, Rolvenden, 16-18 July. Sixteen vans attended, thirteen from Kent and three from Sussex. Very nice to see new members, Melanie and Gary, Harold and Brenda and new “old” members Sharon and Steve joining us. Unfortunately the beautiful gardens were closed due to the owner being on holiday. However a bonfire was arranged each evening, which was very pleasant to sit near. A few marshmallows were baked and a disastrous sausage binned, but the stars were amazing in this area, as no light pollution. Thank you to Ted and Gloria for providing some jokes and a Dingbat Quiz. Impromptu entertainment was also provided by Cecil, due to his acrobatic back flip descent from his chair. Thankfully Cecil, one of our most senior members, was 32 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2021
OK which was good as he received little sympathy but lots of laughter from his partner and other members. On Sunday, Hole Park held a hack event on the estate which included 200 horses over a ten mile route. The horses and riders set off at intervals during the day and rode past our vans, which was very nice to see. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, Kent do not yet hold a true coffee morning but members were invited to bring their own for the group chat on Sunday morning. Thank you Fil and Jan for hosting yet another rally. New members: On behalf of the committee, I offer a very warm welcome to many new members who have joined the Kent Group since beginning of June. Important re AGM: The AGM at Oasis School at 11am, Saturday 9th October, has been confirmed. Kent requires a new committee, so please, if you are interested send your nomination to the Kent secretary by the 1st October. Also if you would like to raise any questions at the AGM, please also submit these to the Kent secretary also by the 1st October. Fil has arranged a very good selection of Temporary Campsites for 2022, which will require hosts. Please help the committee by volunteering. If you are unsure of what is required, please speak to any current committee member or better still come and join us on the day. Please remember to visit our Facebook page, Kent Group of the Motor Caravanners’ Club or kentgroupmcc. weebly.com for the latest updates and further information. If you are aware of someone who does not have internet access, please consider calling them to keep them updated. Upcoming TCs: 3-5 September at Fir Tree Farm, Rhodes Minis. 8-10 October is our AGM at Oasis Academy, Sheerness. 10-12 December at Greatstone Primary School, Greatstone (TBC). 30 December-2 January at Oasis Academy, Sheerness. At the time of writing, we are still awaiting confirmation from Greatstone Primary School as to whether they will allow the Temporary Campsites. We will confirm on Facebook as soon as we hear.
LANCASHIRE July 9-11 at St Josephs School, Brindle. There were only six vans, all from Lancashire. Several members went for walks round the area and then gathered in the evenings for a general chit-chat about previous activities. 23-25 July at Gibsons Farm, Nateby. There were 28 vans: one East Midlands, three NWM&NW and one Yorkshire. A lovely spot. On arrival the weather was good, and in the evening we played a variation of Take your Pick and bingo. On Saturday afternoon a game of Kubb was played outdoors. Some members walked or drove to Garstang. In the evening there were two quizzes. Upcoming TCs: 10-12 September at Greaves Farm, Garstang PR3 1AA. £8 pupn. Another new venue. 24-26
September at Warton Cricket Club Carnforth LA5 9QJ. £8 pupn. 8-10 October at Warren Farm Equestrian Centre L37 9QJ. £10 pupn. We are holding our AGM here at 11am on Saturday. Membership cards must be shown to gain admittance. Please see website for full details of committee changes.
MOTORCYCLE Cromford, 2-7 July – We joined East Midlands Group on a large flat site at the rugby club. We were nestled between two hillsides, a canal, a river and a railway. Three different ride outs took us to Hassop Station cafe, CMC at Chesterfield and Yonderman cafe in the Peak District, organised and led by our local members, little Graham, little Ann, Geoff and Northern Ann. Many of us walked up the canal to High Peak Junction or around the mills at Cromford. Some of our group went in the hall on the first evening to watch the England football match and another day some others played in the Boules match organised by East Midlands. Such a lot to see and do here. We were able to get together on one evening outdoors and chat and then had our WhatsApp quizzes for small groups by the vans. Breedon on the Hill, 7-11 July – 15 vans attended and 14 with bikes. Our first ride out was to the Arboretum in Staffordshire where we had a good 3 hours to walk around looking at the memorials. We were also lucky enough to see a Dakota fly over as part of a service going on there. Our second ride out was to Tutbury, a lovely little village near Burton on Trent and the Triumph Factory. Many of us visited Breedon Priory on the hill nearby. 25-31 July, Aberystwyth RFC – 11 vans arrived on site which was close to the town and sea. Our first ride out took us along the coast to Borth, then inland along the estuary to Machynlleth and back down to Aberdyfi. John and Pat gave out a town trail which many of us did and were able to discover more about this little town including the remains of the castle on the hill above the harbour. The second ride out went to the beautiful Elan valley and up to the top of reservoirs. Many bikers said the roads were great to ride on allowing them to take in fantastic views across the valleys. Our last ride out took us on a ‘Pasty Run’ to Welsh Newquay. Some of the ladies went off together around the charity shops in the town and ended up in Wetherspoons for lunch! The quizzes continued in the evenings, bringing us together in our small groups and getting to know one another a little bit more. Jane and Noreen got us to do a scavenger hunt one evening. We had to find things from our vans and race to deliver the items to them. It was great fun and created a lot of laughter. The winners were the Scooterists! Looking forward to our next meet, see you soon.
Upcoming TCs: 9-13 September at Abingdon Air show. 16-20 September is our AGM at Kemble airfield. Further details on all rallies see the MCG website: motorcyclegroupmcc.co.uk.
NENE VALLEY Our temporary campsite at the beginning of July was small but our stewards, Janice and Martin, helped make it a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. Seventeen vans attended our Temporary Campsite at Stoke Bruerne rally field in the middle of July. We had 12 Nene Valley, three Anglia, one West Country and one Essex. We also had one new member – Charlie – who joined the Club on Wednesday and arrived on the Friday for the weekend. The weather for the whole weekend was scorching and coincided with Formula 1 racing at Silverstone with the usual stream of helicopters going back and forth to the race track. Several members walked along the canal towpath for a change of scenery and others were just happy to partake in a little refreshment at one of the pubs either side of the canal. We even managed to have two socially distanced coffee mornings. Upcoming TCs: 10-12 September at Fir Tree Caravan Park, Warmington, Banbury, OX17 1JL. 2pm start. 23-27 September at The Cranford Vintage & Steam Fair, Cranford near Kettering. 2pm start.
NORTHERN COUNTIES Hi everyone. Our second mini Lake District tour was the main event for July with an additional TC at Amble Foreshore completing the TCs for July. Amble was scheduled for earlier in the year but was cancelled due to the Covid situation. Grasmere Sports & Showground TC from 2-6 July was the first location for the Lakes Tour situated within the village with plenty to explore, unfortunately the weather could have been kinder, very mixed with heavy showers. An excellent turn out with 66 units over the four days, 41 from Northern Counties, nine each from Lancashire and Yorkshire, three from Anglia, two each from East Midlands and S&W Wales. The TC was hosted by Dave and Jan Hird assisted by Graham and Jan Havert. Part two of the tour was a return visit to Ambleside Rugby Club hosted by Peter and Jennifer Brunt assisted by others for a further four nights. A slightly reduced number of 48 attending with eight from Lancashire, three each from Anglia and Yorkshire, two from East Midlands and one from S&W Wales, not forgetting 31 from Northern Counties. Thank you all for attending. Our final destination was Spital Farm in Kendal, where our chairman Bill Hanby celebrated his 70th birthday. It was hosted by George and Nora Davie, assisted by Dave and Janet Hird, with an attendance of 38 units again over four nights: 26 from Northern Counties, 10 from >> September 2021 MOTOR CARAVANNER 33

N. IRELAND Temporary Campsite at Irvinestown 9-11 July. On arrival at Irvinestown for the Lady of The Lake Festival we were made very welcome by our hosts Joe, Florence, Robbie and Irene. On the Saturday we went into the town for a walk round the shops. The business owners were very friendly. On Saturday night a number of members went out for a meal to Mahons Hotel. It is highly recommended as the staff are very friendly and the craic is great. The weather was pleasant and a number of fellow motorhomers were sitting outside listening to music provided by Gary Little. Some of us had a dance. It was a well organised and very enjoyable event. Thanks to the organisers who made it possible. Ben Young Temporary Campsite at Cookstown PS from 30 July -1 August. This weekend the weather was in our favour and the rain stayed away. Iris and Stanley along with Flo and Enda were our hosts and a grand job they did. 23 vans turned up for the weekend. Friday evening everyone got settled in and it was nice to see some new faces as well as familiar ones. Saturday morning some people took advantage of the market stalls and the shops in Cookstown. It was nice to see Ellie Robinson and family back amongst us after their recent sad bereavement. Saturday evening our chairman Joe put on music for us and it was so good to get back to some sort of normality. Thank you Joe for that. We once again had our own photographer Roy Smith with us taking all the photos. Thank you Roy. A good weekend and craic was had by all. Liz McKenna 36 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2021
NWM&NW What glorious weather we had at Bala Rugby Club – fantastic sunshine. Visitors came from Yorkshire and Severn Valley. We also had new members Peter and Valerie Arnold, Gary and Jackie Westwood and David and Annemarie Livesey with their grandson Rueben. It was wonderful to sit out late into the evening to enjoy the late sunshine chatting to friends old and new. Saturday some braved the heat to support the high street while others admired the lakeside location or relaxed under awnings. Rueben went swimming in the lake. Peter and Michelle ventured further afield to Barmouth. In the evening George and Joan Woolnough held a sausage and cider supper for everyone in the Rugby Club marquee. Most enjoyable, and many thanks to all those who helped. There was quite a good range of winners on the bingo some missing out on a chance to wash-up. The 80s and 90s quiz was won by Ken and Ineke with Dave and Annemarie. Further entertainment was provided by RAF jets low level flying over the lake. Additional amusement came in the middle of the night as the noisy rescue helicopter woke most of us when circling searching for late night kayakers on the lake. A huge thank you to George and Joan for the supper and marshalling this rally and then moving on to Salford Children's Holiday Camp Prestatyn to repeat the good work. This is a great location with easy access to the beach, walking in the sand hills and buses to Rhyl and Prestatyn. Unfortunately the weather changed dramatically. It was much cooler with wind and rain lashing the 'vans over night. Wednesday evening was spent chatting in the hall while on the Thursday we had an amusing game of Scattegories won by two Eileens helped by Jean. Darren and Shirley invited us all to join their tenth wedding anniversary celebrations with cake, wine and nibbles. A big thank you and best wishes for many more. All venues must be pre booked until 2022. When booking a venue please supply your name, membership number, group, vehicle registration number and contact number. Look on our website www.nwmandnw.org.uk or Facebook for booking and further updates, or ring Mike and Linda 01785 223382. If, after booking, you can not attend please let us know so the place can be offered to someone else. Upcoming TCs: 9-12 September at Eccleshall Castle, Newcastle Road, Eccleshall, Staffs. ST21 6LS. Grass parking, short work to a lovely village with shops and pubs. A good location for anyone interested in geo-cashing. Buses to Stafford or Newport. 24-26 September at Glebe Farm, Peel Lane, Congleton, CW12 4RQ. Grass parking, no hall. Farm shops. Good pub
nearby. 1-3 October at Stone Cricket Club, Lichfield Road, Stone, ST15 8QH. Some hard standing and some grass parking. Hall, bar drinks. Farmers' market close by. Town a short walk.
SCOTTISH Hello fellow members hope you have had a good summer. As I write these notes the sun is shining again, what a difference it makes. Twenty one units attended Upper Largo over the five nights, the good weather helped an enjoyable meet. We welcomed two new members Brian and Jackie Burnett, and Sean and Veronica Gibson. Two visitors from Northern Counties John Ternent, Steve and Liz Scott and Adrian and Ann Billingham from East Midlands. A warm welcome to Roger and Ellen Amos who have transferred to the Scottish Group. A great time was had at Monturpie, visiting Largo Arts Festival, St Andrews and Leven with a two-course meal arranged at the onsite restaurant at the end of the rally. The meal was attended by 32 of us, eight having to eat out in summer houses in the garden. The meal was great value with the committee booking next year's AGM at this venue. The arts festival was on for a week and was an attraction for members to attend. It is disappointing that the Brechin meet had to be cancelled. This was due to no bookings from members and sheep still in field within three weeks of the meet. Future meets at Culzean Castle Camping and Caravan Club site from 16-21 September at £20 pupn with EHU. The AGM will be held at Lathamond bus museum hall on Saturday the 16 October starting at 1pm. Bookings are required as normal for this season if you want to attend the AGM. Regards, Squeezebox
SEVERN VALLEY Due to CoMs (HO) instructions we know can only have all TCs on a pre-bookable basis by contacting our rally officer, Sandy, or booking online at our website. All the information will be available on the Severn valley Group website, so keep looking on there for more information: http:\\severnvalleymcc.co.uk. Raphaels, Evesham – Another good TC where free cider flowed, added bonus of hot air balloon landing in the adjacent field which enabled some very good photos. Another well supported Severn Valley TC. Thanks to Bernard and Betty Le-Feuvre, the rally hosts. Wilmcote – Wilmcote holding stables had a bowling green quality rally field. We were lucky enough to have excellent weather all weekend. The members were very friendly and relaxed and soaked up the lovely sunshine together. We had four new members who joined in and hopefully had a great time, like the rest of us. We all got together around the hosts' van on the Friday night and some of us continued the evening in
the local club enjoying very reasonable priced drinks. Rocket Ron organised a game of Boules Saturday evening when our experienced player Jenny Barlow won the competition. Hosts were Liz and Derrick. Barrons Cross, Leominster – Unfortunately the weather was not so kind with mixed sunshine and showers. Entertainment was booked for Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon. The entertainment band let us down on Saturday but Alan Jay from Glasgow who entertained us on Friday stepped in and saved the day. Friday evening he entertained us with his singing and he also did a rendition with Jeremy miming the song “Sandy” to Sandy which gave us all a good laugh. Check out the Facebook recording taken by Ian Taylor. Another star turned out to be Oscar the parrot who became very popular with Alan Jay. Thanks go to Richard and Kirstie who stepped in at the last moment to run the rally. Upcoming TCs: 17-19 September at Bewdley Yew Tree farm DY14 9TH. £13.50 with EHU PUPN and £10.50 without EHU. Two nights of live entertainment in hall. 1-3 October at Avon Bank Meadow, Perhore WR10 2JF. £13 PUPN. AGM awaiting confirmation by venue, also new committee members will be required.

Our event at Mount Edgcumbe was a successful weekend with a good turnout and enjoyed by all despite the classic car show being cancelled. Our thanks go to Bob and Margaret for hosting. People enjoyed some wonderful walks and boat rides to the Royal William dock yard. We are taking bookings for our New year event and hope that many will attend to see this year out and bring in what we hope will be a more normal 2022. Entertainment will be on every evening and the site has full facilities including a swimming pool and ten pin bowling alley. Please note the formal notification of our AGM below. It is lovely to see other groups booking but if we do not get more SWP members coming forward and prepared to stand on the committee as well as host the events organised for next year we will unfortunately have to cancel many of them. We have booked entertainment and hope that we can make it a party to mark the end of the successful summer events. The site is full facilities including a golf course and great walks. Notice is hereby given that the Twenty Sixth Annual General Meeting of the Members of the South West Peninsula Motor Caravanners' Club will be held at 8pm on Friday 29th October 2021 at Trevornick Holiday Park, Newquay, TR8 5PW. S&W WALES Hello again. As I write this report it is raining heavily and windy, the sort of weather we are getting used to this changeable summer. However, it was a different story from Thursday, 15th July to Sunday, 18th July when it was hot with unbroken sunshine and the lightest of breeze at our TC at Brownhills Caravan Park near Newquay in Ceredigion. We were given a warm welcome by our hosts Kath and Peter Thomas with John Saunders (alias John the Pipe) who parked up 32 vans. This was quite a difficult task as recent prolonged heavy rain had made the field saturated in places, although it looked firm. The assistance of the site owner and his trusty tractor rescued several vans and the now sunny weather soon dried the ground. We were delighted to be joined by new members Albert and Sue plus visitors Beryl Stait (Severn Valley), Pete and Pat (Avon) and Ann and Mike Connell (Lancashire). The site owners had made considerable investment in the site during the pandemic and we benefited from the luxurious shower block with its immaculate individual wet rooms. Also some members booked for a socially distanced swim in the very smart indoor swimming pool. Others caught the bus from the site entrance to Newquay or Aberaeron. Those who chose Newquay needed to be quite fit as the bus dropped you at the top of the hill and you walked down to the harbour and beach, but of course, you had to climb the hill on the way back. Some members chose to return by taxi and I don’t blame them. We chose to go on to Aberaeron which is such a pretty town where brightly painted houses cluster around a tiny harbour. I can verify that the excellent reputation of the restaurant on the harbourside is accurate as their fish and chips was superb. This weekend was made extra special because we were able to sit out in the warm evenings, carefully socially distanced, with an uninterrupted view of sensational sunsets and be entertained by the ukulele playing and singing of our very own John Davies. On the Saturday evening he was joined by our Roger Jones and the visitors, Ann and Mike Connell (who play in the Lancashire Group Ukelele Band) and we all enjoyed the singalong. A reminder to everyone to make sure that Peter Heale, our secretary, has all your contact details including, 38 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2021
where possible, an email and mobile phone number. This is to ensure that you can be informed when the booking for future TCs opens and how to book and any changes. Peter will email and text message the booking details approximately one week before the date of the TC. This information will also be on the website for those without email or mobile. Please remember that all TCs will be bookable for the foreseeable future and subject to the Covid rules that apply at the time. Upcoming TCs: 23-26 September at Pembrey Country Park, SA16 0EJ. Starts 12noon. 15-17 October is our AGM at Pencoed School, Nr. Bridgend, CF35 5LZ. Starts 5pm.
SUSSEX Well after such downpours of rain which threatened to keep us in situ a couple of times during July we were grateful for the scorching sun that followed to dry us out and allow us to leave our TCs! What a disappointment that the Aviation Museum was shut for some necessary refurbishment, however it didn't stop the 18 'vans joining us for some hot sunshine. It was so good to see some planes travelling in and out of Gatwick, gave us a feeling of normality! The local pub did a good turnover for food and drink, and even had the footie on for the many who were interested in how England faired in their game. We all had a much needed get together in the field to catch up with old and new friends. Lovely to see Mike and Pearl again after a long absence. Lancing saw 13 'vans arrive despite the welcoming drizzle which turned into brilliant sunshine, just right for the close by beach and the ice cream van who visited the site each afternoon. So good to be able to hold raffles again – Julie Rogers was very honoured to pull the first ticket – and so pleased that it was her own! We'll be back at Lancing in October. EHUs available, please just give Marilyn a call to book. It seems to be a year of closures this year. We were back at Isfield Lavender Line, but the railway had been shut due to covid (of course) and couldn't open ready for us as idiots had vandalised one of the carriages, and there needs to be some retraining for the volunteers who keep the Lavender Line running. However, we hope to be back there again soon with a working steam train and the wonderful cafe. Marilyn did a sterling job of organising the local mobile pizza company, and arranging for the pub to supply a scrumptious full English breakfast on the Saturday. Peter and Anne Baker did a fantastic job of hosting and making 26 'vans welcome, including one couple from Scotland, Malcolm and Lesley (new to rallying), and Brian and Sandra. They even supplied the cream tea on Saturday afternoon. We just didn't need to eat anything else that day!
Peter's Friday night and Saturday night musical quizzes were absolutely brilliant. Some people even started singing! Everyone shared in the boxes of Celebrations that the same team won (only by 1 or 2 points!) on both nights. Some lucky retirees stayed on at the CL site for a few more days of relaxation. Please remember, whilst we are still booking you in, please let us know if you can't attend – someone might be waiting for a space. Linda Reading is now taking bookings for our Xmas rally at Bexhill. Full details on our webpage and in this magazine. Carole Upcoming TCs: 1-5 September at the new Loxwood Village Hall RH14 0SF. Starts: 2pm. 13-15 September at Wild Heart Hill BN14 0RJ (new venue). Starts 2pm. 24-26 September at Tillingbourne School GU4 8NB. Starts: 6pm. 1-4 October at The Barn, Lancing BN15 8JG. Starts: 2pm.
WEST COUNTRY Our TC on 1-6 July was at the Lady's Mile Holiday Park. A total of 32 motorhomes were booked and enjoyed a five day rally in this excellent venue. The weather was good and the site had plenty of things to do. Our Chairman Bob and his wife Helena were hosting and we had a visit from a couple called Dan and Mazzy. They have a blog called The Travel Trolls. They were interested to hear that Bob was having his long hair cut off for his charity The North Devon Children's Holiday Foundation, which gives holidays for sick children. Bob is to have his long locks cut off at the Exeter TC later in the month. The Travel Trolls put it onto their blog and raised £707.56p. Bob was hoping to raise £1,000 and was delighted to be so close to his target already. A big thank you to Dan and Mazzy for helping him get there. They are coming to film the hair cut the Exmouth TC. Our Second TC meet on 13-18 July was at Barnstaple Rugby Club. A total of 41 motorhomes, some from other groups, enjoyed wonderful weather all the time of the five night meet. Several members enjoyed a fish and chip supper from the local fish and chip shop on the Thursday evening. A good many of the members took the buses to some of the local beauty spots of Ilfracombe, Woolacombe, and Lynmouth. A total of 77 motorhomes were booked at our Holiday TC held at Exmouth Rugby Club from 27 July1 August, coming from all over the country and one from Spain. The weather was sun and showers, thunder and lightening, however a storm blew up mid week and caught a few of us out during the night resulting in finding a few wind breaks blown over and was very windy during the next day. The club room was open Wednesday and Thursday evening for our use. On the Thursday evening at 7.30 Chairman Bob Bawden, known as The Hairy Chair,
proceeded to have his locks cut off by anyone who wanted to have a go and donate a minimum of £1.00. Almost everyone was more than generous and coupled with an auction raised £613, other money raised was from a book sale £35.43, charity box and other donations £5.70, last years donations £378.25 and the Travel Troll plus friends and others £905, giving Bob the grand total of £2240.25 for his charity. A big thank you to all who helped and donated. Bob is now affectingly know as the Hairless Chair.
WEST WESSEX All Covid guidelines will still be strictly applied. We look forward to giving a warm welcome to visitors from other groups. Bucklers Hard, Bealieu. 1-4 July. Robert, Anne and Judith-Lynne hosted this rally at Bucklers Hard to welcome 17 vans. Started with beautiful weather giving us the opportunity to view the attractions in the local area which began with a visit to the museum (entry included in the rally fee) to immerse ourselves in naval history from the Nelson era. The adjacent café gave good value with a restricted menu as we pull ourselves out of Covid. Saturday brought a few showers but the spirits were not dampened as many of us tackled the walk to Beaulieu Village and carried on to the Motor museum. It is many years since we last visited and how things have changed. It took us a while to get around the museum with the house and gardens still to see so it was fairly late before we started the trek back, luckily the ice cream shop in the village carried us wearily back to the van, mileage for the day was 9.6 miles. Phew! WeyHill Fayre Pub. 22-25 July. In great weather for the Thurs/Fri Linda and Doug Rowberry hosted a total of 21 vans, 19 West Wessex and one each from Spanish and Kent groups. It was good to see the pub open again, good menu of pub grub and decent ale was served up by a very helpful staff. We were kept awake during Friday night by the first thunderstorm of the summer, thought it was in the van at one stage and close enough to discover the next morning that a house three miles away was struck by lightning. The bus stops were very handily outside the pub so it was easy to reach Andover or Salisbury. A good weekend so who cares if the weather became rather damp for the drive home. Our outgoing chairman, Derek Mills and his wife Maggie made this their last rally as chairman, maybe we shall see him again at a future date. We wish you all the best in your move to Bonnie Scotland and very many thanks for all your hard work for the group especially during this difficult Covid period. YORKSHIRE Nineteen vans (16 Yorkshire, three East Midlands) arrived at the Thornensians RUFC, beautiful sunshine all weekend which made a change. It was great to see a number of old faces once again, and some new members joining our temporary campsite. Saturday saw most people heading out and about the town. Some walking the canal with dogs in toe, but most directly into town to find the cafes and pubs. Late Saturday afternoon we were treated to some cake and scones from our hosts, followed by some free wine and beer supplied by Alan and Elsie Stead to celebrate his 80th birthday. All though late with this, happy birthday Alan! Following on from that we had a quiz by Dave , needless to say it was very hard and non of us got into double figures for the answers. Sunday saw some of us have Sunday lunch in the club house and a late departure. Thank you to Dave

and Sue for hosting. Whitby –Thursday saw the arrival of 43 vans, with more arriving Friday. They came from Yorkshire, Lancashire, Northern Counties, East Midlands, Anglia, NWM&NW. We also had a few first timers. On Friday many walked into Whitby via the coastal path. Finding the shops, pubs and cafes all open, we had torrential rain later in the day which kept most members confined to their vans. Saturday was a better day weather-wise, members getting out and about going to Grosmont (Aidensfield in Heartbeat), Sandsend, Robin Hoods Bay, Ravenscar and beyond. Some members on Sunday enjoyed the steam train journey into Pickering. Mike Lambert organised a walking group for members and they met up with the Yorkshire Mountain Rescue Team and carried on with their walk which was enjoyed by everyone who did it. Members sitting outside vans enjoying BBQs and just catching up, what a great temporary campsite enjoyed by all. Thanks to all the committee and helpers for putting the weekend on. Upcoming TCs: 2-5 September at Beverley Racecourse HU17 8QZ. 9-12 September at Royal Yaght Club Bridlington YO15 3QL. 15-17 October is our AGM at Wetherby Racecourse LS22 5EJ.

WALES
Hop across the border to the green, green grass of Wales, where you’ll find castles galore, mountainous National Parks, fabulous walks, a wild coastline and above all, a warm welcome.
The

Cardiff Castle
Cardiff Castle
There are more castles in Wales than you could visit in a lifetime, so choosing which to take a wander round is not an easy decision – but, if you find yourself in the capital, a trip to Cardiff Castle is a must. With a history spanning over 2000 years, the castle has housed Roman soldiers, seen noble knights
Brecon Beacons National Park
If scaling the rocky peaks of Snowdonia sounds too strenuous, the Brecon Beacons offer a slightly gentler but no less picturesque landscape of grassy moorland, sandstone peaks and heather-clad escarpments. This is a walker’s paradise, with plenty of remote countryside and countless trails to choose from. Wander through lush moorland, past waterfalls and

prehistoric monuments into the area’s quirky towns. Visit foodie hotspot Abergavenney or book-mad Hay-on-Wye to recharge before heading back out to search for the area’s famed Welsh mountain ponies. Stay past nightfall and you’ll be treated to a breath-takingly starry sky – the area is the country’s only International Dark Sky Reserve. Brecon Beacons

the island and its ruined church are associated with Saint Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers. With more than 10 miles of footpaths crossing the island and neighbouring nature reserve Newborough Warren, including the Anglesey Coast Path, it’s the perfect place for a stroll with the one you love.
Pembrokeshire Coast Path

National Showcaves Centre
National Showcaves Centre for Wales
While you’re in the Brecon Beacons, take a trip below ground to this popular family-friendly attraction. Three caves each offer a unique underground experience: walk through the beautifully decorated passageways of Dan-yr-Ogof; marvel at the enormous caverns and
40-foot-high waterfalls of Cathedral Cave; and learn why 42 human skeletons were buried in Bone Cave, and how our ancestors used these spaces millions of years ago. On site there is also one of the world’s largest collections of life-sized dinosaur models, as well as the Shire Horse Centre, an Iron Age village, museum and café to quench the thirst you’ve no doubt worked up after all that!
Llanddwyn Island
This romantic tidal outcrop extending from Anglesey is one of the most picturesque locations in Wales, with a pristine Blue Flag beach and views extending out towards Snowdonia. Rich in legends,
The Pembrokeshire Coast Path National Trail twists and turns its way for 186 miles along what is widely considered the most magnificent coastline in Wales. Covering a myriad of maritime landscapes, the path lies almost entirely within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park — the UK's only truly coastal National Park – so the trail displays an array of coastal flowers and bird life, as well as evidence of human activity from Neolithic times. Although in its entirety it represents a fairly mammoth trek, with its ascent and descent said to be equivalent to climbing Everest, it can be enjoyed in multiple shorter sections so you can dip in and out of the beaches, secluded coves, rugged cliff tops and into the pretty coastal villages strung out along its length.

Smallest house in Great Britain
>> Tintern Abbey The most famous of Wales’ medieval ruins, Tintern Abbey still stands in roofless splendour nearly 500 years since its tragic fall from grace. Captured by JMW Turner, William Wordsworth and countless other artists, writers and poets, Tintern has earned its place as a national icon. Set in the steepsided Wye Valley, its soaring Gothic arches are close enough to the road, river and footpaths to be viewed from many different angles – each one more beautiful than the last. The present-day remains are an combination of several phases of building spanning 400 years, though the basic arrangement has stayed the same.

Blink and you’d miss it – this tiny dwelling in Conwy is well worth a look to wonder how on earth anybody could've lived in it. The Smallest House in Great Britain is a mere 72 inches across, 122 inches high and 120 inches deep, so isn’t ideal if you’re claustrophobic! Despite this, there's a bedroom, an open plan living and kitchen area and, as past occupants have proven, enough room for one person or a couple to live in comfortably – its last resident was a local fisherman who happened to be 6 foot 3!
Foster and Partners. Inside the tilted glass dome is a Mediterranean landscape dominated by a sixmetre-deep ravine. Rock terraces and sheer faces are cut by streams and waterfalls, while a lake provides a humid habitat at the foot of the chasm. Visitors can experience the aftermath of an Australian bush fire, rest in a Spanish olive grove or wander through collections of fuchsias from Chile. Also onsite are lakeside walks and the British Bird of Prey Centre, among many other charming and educational gardens.

new pastime, whether you’re a fitness fanatic on a mountain bike or simply want to gently ride on an electric bike.
But which UK city is already the best for cyclists? Data from Leisure Lakes Bikes has revealed the top five bike-friendly cities to peddle round – why not get in the saddle when you’re next on a trip near these cities in your motorhome?

York
With 900 cycle routes, amounting to 59,305km of mapped ways, York places fifth on the ranking of best cycling city in the UK. The northern cathedral city has a great network of off-road cycle paths and on-road cycle lanes for cyclists. There’s also an extensive availability of cycle parking facilities across the city, including at shopping centres, schools, and offices. If you’re looking for a fun route to cycle in York, we’d recommend cycling from York Minster along the River Ouse towards Beningbrough Hall. You’ll enjoy seeing the historic city before easing into an idyllic green space with fantastic water scenes. 50 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2021
Glasgow is the most populated city in Scotland, so it’s great to see that the city has 912 cycling routes and 82,340km of mapped ways. Bristol is one of the UK’s most popular tourist destinations and also held the title for the best city to live in in 2014 and 2017. Perhaps the high number of cycle routes contributed to its achievement? Placing third in the UK, there are 1,612 cycling routes in Bristol
with 96,947km of mapped ways. As cycling is one of the most sustainable methods of transport, it’s unsurprising that this cyclingmad city was also awarded the European Green Capital Award in 2015. The Bristol and Bath Railway Path is one of the most famous
cycling routes in the country. At 15 miles long, this off-road cycle path is part of the National Cycle Network. Using the old Midland Railway track, you’ll find art, monuments, and remnants of the old train line along this route that connects Bristol and Bath.

London
The UK capital narrowly misses out on also being the cycling capital, placing second as the most bikefriendly city. London has 1,730 cycling routes and 223,429km of mapped ways – meaning it comes out on top in terms of mapped
ways. Cycling is an incredibly popular option for working professionals in the city, and as such, it has the infrastructure to match. If you fancy practising some quality metropolitan cycling, London has no shortage of routes.
1
One scenic route that will help break you into London cycling is King’s Cross to Notting Hill. Don’t bother getting the Underground – enjoy seeing Camden Lock, the zoo in Regent’s Park, and the waterside by Little Venice. What’s a trip to London without some sightseeing?
Edinburgh Beating its southern counterpart, Edinburgh takes the top spot as the most bike-friendly city in the UK. The data reveals that there are 1,751 cycling routes in the Scottish capital with 164,913km of mapped ways. With a range of bike priority measures, Edinburgh is shaping up to be the best and safest cities in the UK for cycling. You can enjoy off-road and on-road cycle paths and lanes throughout the city. There’s a great mix of urban and green space to enjoy too. From pedalling around Arthur’s Seat and Edinburgh Castle to heading up into the majestic Pentland Hills or speeding along the shoreline, exploring Edinburgh on two wheels is endless fun.

Folding ebike upgraded for 2021 The beauty of the One’s design is its adjustability, which fits a range of rider heights from 5ft to 6ft 4in. It’s able to fit so many rider sizes because of its adjustable telescopic bar/steerer and telescopic seatpost, which features a rather clever flip-lever lock-out.
Pack a punch. Designed with a focus on providing reassuring performance ride after ride, the MiRiDER One folding ebike was carefully crafted to be the ultimate electric folding bike. The rear hub motor offers 250w of assistance with the latest model offering a jump in torque to tackle off-road trails. Charge from empty to full in 5hrs and expect between 25 - 45 miles of range.
Once folded, the bike measures 770mm x 430mm x 680mm with the bar and seatpost on their lowest settings, compared to 1,340mm x 575mm x 1,100mm unfolded.

Garmin celebrates the Great British summer with an historical holiday route created using its Camper GPS Sat-Nav range
W
ith Britain set to enjoy a bumper year of domestic tourism, many holidaymakers will be considering how to make the most of destinations closer to home. With resorts such as Margate, Scarborough, Skegness and Great Yarmouth seeing their bookings skyrocket like they did during their heyday in the 1940s and 1950s, touring in a motorhome gives the freedom and flexibility to enjoy the best of the British Isles without competing for holiday rentals and hotels. The Garmin Camper GPS SatNav’s Trip Down Memory Lane is designed to help plot out a holiday that explores the storied history of Britain as a tourism destination. The order listed below is by no means set and is best mapped out using one of Garmin’s camper-specific sat-navs. With custom routing, road warnings,
and a directory of motorhome sites and services at your fingertips, you can spend less time planning and more time adventuring.
which gave birth to the first British seaside resort, it was soon followed by many other towns we know and love today. Brighton was one of these first spa resorts and, over time, restorative trips to the area evolved into recreational visits for the upper classes, gaining even more popularity when the health benefits of bathing in the sea came to be known. Recommended stay: Brighton Caravan Club Site, BN2 5TS – are we recommending Caravan Club sites or should we find another one? Also consider: Aberystwyth, Blackpool and Southend, three other typical early holiday destinations.
Seaside sojourns The route starts with one of the UK’s most popular, and first, holiday locations – Brighton. Following the discovery of spa waters in Scarborough in the 17th century,
Steamboats, railways, architecture and creativity With the establishment of holiday resorts in the 17th century, the 1800s saw the emergence of piers in destinations as a facilitator for

travel, with steamboats bringing thousands of holidaymakers from London. Following Brighton, the Trip Down Memory Lane moves our campers on to Margate – one of the key destinations buoyed by access via steamboat. From Dreamland to Turner Contemporary, it’s a great example of a resort turned around, home to cultural pursuits and small creative businesses. Recommended stay: Hawk Place Camping, CT7 9QS From Margate, hop across the Queen Elizabeth II bridge to Essex and visit another destination benefited by steamboats, SouthendOn-Sea. Recommended stay: The Lake at Nine Acres Campsite, SS9 5QT From new favourites to the originals A trip through Essex and Suffolk’s AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) to the Norfolk coast takes holidaymakers to one of this year’s most popular holiday destinations – Great Yarmouth. Enjoy the town’s ‘Golden Mile’ seafront and the heart of the Great British holiday’s prime, before settling down not far from town in the beautiful Norfolk Broads. Recommended stay: Wild Duck Touring and Camping, NR31 9NE The trip now brings us to where it all began, one of the towns that kicked
Kendal off the very essence of holidaying. Buxton, a spa town where the sick would come to regain their health before people realised they enjoyed the trip out of the city so much they started doing it for leisure purposes. Recommended stay: Buxton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, SK17 6UJ – ditto this one Northern Delights As the route travels north, do as the Lancashire Mill town workers would have done when using the new railway lines at the start of the 20th Century for a visit to Blackpool’s Pleasure Beach and head to Morecambe (soon to be the home to the Eden Project of the north). Morecambe was one of the hardest hit resorts from overseas travel in the 1970s; it’s now bouncing back with developments such as the refurbished art deco Midland hotel. Recommended stay: Little Acre Holiday Park, LA7 7NN
62 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2021
No look back at the history of the Great British holiday would be complete without a stay in the Lake District – set to be a huge favourite of staycationers this summer. Windermere, Kendal, Ambleside and Ullswater are all highlights, and the area was the inspiration for the establishment of the National Trust. More remote destinations like the Lakes became even more popular after the Second World War as cars became more affordable for families to own, followed by the development of the campervan, such as the cult classic, the VW Westfalia in 1955. Recommended stay: Low Wray Campsite, Ambleside, LA22 0JA To finish the trip, a stop in the Scottish spa town of Dumfries is essential, particularly with the beautiful Galloway Forest Park on its doorstep. Recommended stay: Barnsoul Caravan Park, DG2 9SQ Plot out this route, or create your own Trip Down Memory Lane with the Garmin Camper GPS Sat-Nav. With custom camper routing, which considers the size and weight of your motorhome to find the best routes, extra-large 8” and 10” sat-nav display with portrait or landscape view and a directory of campervan parks and services, the Garmin Camper is the perfect companion to your next Great British adventure.
