INTRODUCTION «Summer Bloom 여름이 피다» 전은 프랑스 우양산 장인 미셸 오르토(Michel Heurtault, 1966-)와 한국의 김용호, 권중모 작가의 작품을 함께 소개한다. ‘Summer Bloom’은 이번 전시의 주요 작품인 우양산을 여름에 비유하며 “꽃이 피다”라는 뜻의 ‘Bloom’과 함께 표현함으로써 우산을 펴는 행위를 계절성과 함께 개화와 같은 자연적 현상에 빗대어 표현한 제목이다. 이번 전시는 아시아에서 처음 소개되는 미셸 오르토의 18-20세기 우양산 컬렉션과 그의 작품을 통해 일상 속에서 친근하게 사용해오던 우산과 양산을 공예 작품으로서 접근한다. 또한 전시의 부제인 ‘프랑스 우산 이야기(A Story of French Umbrellas)’를 통해서도 짐작할 수 있듯 앤티크 소장품들과 오르토가 수집한 다양한 아카이브 자료들, 그리고 국내 작가의 작업들을 한 자리에서 보여줌으로써 프랑스 우산의 역사 속에 등장하는 흥미로운 이야기들을 소개한다. 각 시대에는 그 시대의 스타일과 고유한 기법들이 존재했다. 프랑스는 우양산 제작의 선두주자였고 20세기 초에는 10만명 이상의 장인들이 직접 만든 우양산을 세계 각국으로 수출했다. 당시 기술은 창의적이었고 스타일과 기법도 다양했다. 오르토는 그러한 앤티크 우양산에서 매력을 느끼고 지난 30년 동안 1770년부터 20세기 후반에 제작된 역사적이고 독특한 우양산을 수집하고 복원해오고 있다. 미셸 오르토는 2013년 프랑스 문화부에서 제정한 Maître d’Art(Master of Arts) 무형문화재에 선정되었다. 세계의 유일무이한 우양산 장인인 오르토의 작업에 대한 열정은 8세의 어린 나이에 우양산을 해체하고 조립하는 과정 속에서 그 메커니즘을 이해하면서부터 출발했다. 그는 오트 쿠튀르 패션 하우스들의 코르셋 복장과 다양한 영화와 연극 의상을 만들고 복원하는 일을 하다 2008년 본인의 이름으로 우양산 공방을 설립했다. 2017년 일본 도쿄 국립박물관, 2019년 중국 베이징 국립박물관의 «Wonderlab 프랑스 무형문화재» 전과 2018년 독일 분데스쿤스트할레의 «Weather Report» 전을 통해 그의 작업 세계를 선보인 바 있는 오르토는 2019년 서울의 플랫폼엘에서 국내 작가 김용호, 권중모와 함께 작가 본인의 작품과 18세기-현대 컬렉션 작품을 함께 보여주며 그 시대상과 경제 문화적 이야기를 함께 풀어나간다. 오르토의 컬렉션과 함께 소개되는 김용호, 권중모의 작품은 과거의 창작물을 더 창의적으로 관람할 수 있도록 한다. 전시장 2층에서는 오르토의 앤티크 컬렉션과 함께 권중모 작가의 한지 조명 작품들을 소개한다. 한지라는 전통적 소재를 이용해 조명 설치 작업을 하는 권중모 작가의 작품은 서양의 오래된 컬렉션과 함께 어우러져 동서양, 고전과 현대의 미가 어우러진 전시장을 구성한다. 전시장 3층에서 소개되는 김용호의 <blow blow blow>는 김용호가 촬영한 제주도의 사계절을 담아낸 작품이다. 앤티크 우양산 컬렉션과 함께 어우러진 영상은 마치 그 계절에 있는 듯한 여운을 남겨주며 영상 속에 등장하는 작은 개화를 비롯한 자연적 현상은 시적인 감정을 불러일으킨다. INTRODUCTION The exhibition «Summer Bloom» introduces Michel Heurtault (1966-), a master of parasols and umbrellas, as well as the works of Kim Yongho and Jungmo Kwon. The title ‘Summer Bloom’ blends the association of parasols and umbrellas with the summer season and the way they “bloom out” like flowers when opened. This exhibition introduces collections of parasols and umbrellas from the 18th to 20th centuries for the first time in Asia and offers a new context in which we can perceive umbrellas and parasols from a perspective of craft rather than of daily use. As the subtitle ‘A Story of French Umbrellas’ suggests, the show tells interesting stories of the history of French umbrellas by presenting archive materials collected by Heurtault, alongside the works of a selected few Korean artists. Each era has its own style and technique. France, a leading producer of parasols and umbrellas, exported the parasols and umbrellas of more than 100,000 artisans all over the world by the early 20th century. At that time, the technology was creative and style and techniques were varied. Heurtault, who was inspired by those antique parasols and umbrellas, started to collect and restore these unique productions spanning from 1770 to the late 20th century. Michel Heurtault received the title of Maître d’Art (Master Artist) from the French Ministry of Culture in 2013. As the only master of parasols and umbrellas, he recalls that he became interested in them by disassembling and reassembling them since he was 8 years old, finding and understanding the mechanism behind them. He initially began his career by creating and restoring various costumes for films and theaters, as well as corset costumes of Haute Couture fashion houses, before opening his own studio under his name. His works were presented at the Tokyo National Museum in 2017 and the National Museum of China in 2019, with the exhibition «Wonderlab: Living Treasures of France», and at Bundeskunsthalle in Germany in 2018 with «Weather Report». This time, with Kim Yongho and Jungmo Kwon, he will present his works and collections from the 18th century to tell stories of each era, as well as their economic and cultural episodes, here at Platform-L in Seoul in 2019. The works by Kim Yongho and Jungmo Kwon give an opportunity to creatively appreciate the productions of the past. On the 2nd floor, Kwon presents Hanji lighting works alongside Heurtault’s antique collections. Hanji, a traditional material, is in harmony with the old Western collections, giving an impression of balance between the East and the West with a traditional and modern aesthetic. On the 3rd floor, “blow blow blow” by Kim shows the four seasons of Jeju island. The film, displayed with the antique parasols and umbrellas, gives a feeling of being in a specific season. The small blooming scene in the film, as well as various natural phenomenon, bring a poetic sensation.

미셸 오르토(1966-)는 지난 30년 동안 역사적이고 독특한 우양산 작품을 수집하고 복원해오며 이를 재해석하거나 시대를 아우르는 현대적인 작품들을 제작해왔다. 2008년 본인의 이름으로 파라솔 공방 Parasolerie Heurtault을 설립했고, 2011년 프랑스 정부에서 뛰어난 기술력과 전통, 장인 정신을 바탕으로 하는 지역 대표 기업들에게 수여하는 인증 마크인 Living Heritage Company(EPV, 현존하는 문화유산)을 부여받았다. 이후 2013년 프랑스 문화부로부터 장인의 최고 영예인 Maître d’Art(Master of Arts)를 수여받았다. 1770년부터 20세기 후반에 제작된 수천 점에 달하는 그의 앤티크 컬렉션과 본인의 현대작으로 2017년 일본 도쿄 국립박물관, 2019년 중국 베이징 국립박물관의 «Wonderlab 프랑스 무형문화재» 전과 2018년 독일 분데스쿤스트할레의 «Weather Report» 전 등 여러 국가에서 개최된 다수의 전시를 통해 그의 작업 세계를 선보인 바 있으며, 이 외에도 <페어웰, 마이 퀸>(2013), <블랑섹의 기이한 모험>(2013), <마담 보바리>(2015), <마드무아젤: 위대한 유혹>(2018) 등의 영화와 드라마 베르사유 및 극장 의상 소품을 제작했다. 김용호(1956-)는 90년대 패션 브랜드 광고 사진들을 통해 강렬한 인상을 남겼다. 이후 오랜 시간 장르를 넘나들며 패션, 광고, 순수 예술 등 여러 분야에 걸친 경험을 바탕으로 실험적인 작업 활동과 전시를 선보이고 있다. 최근 몇 년간 그는 사진 이미지뿐만 아니라 영상 매체의 가능성에 주목하며 작품 활동의 폭을 넓혀가고 있다. 주요 개인전으로 2008년 대림미술관에서 개최된 «몸», «피연»(COEX, 2011), «우아한 인생»(류화랑, 2012), «현대차 아트 프로젝트브릴리언트 마스터피스»(비욘드뮤지엄, 2013), «blow blow blow»(제주 해비치 호텔, 2017) 등이 있으며 이 외에도 다수의 그룹전에 참여했다. 권중모(1982-)는 바르셀로나에서 산업디자인을 전공했으며 다양한 재료를 사용한 조명, 가구, 오브제 등의 작업을 선보여왔다. 모든 자연현상 특히 빛, 새, 그림자, 일상 속 사물의 자연스러운 형태 그리고 기하학적 구조에 관심이 많고 최근에는 한지와 섬유, 금속 재료를 이용한 조명 작업과 이를 설치 형태의 작품으로도 선보이고 있다. 스페인, 파리 등 유럽 유수의 디자인 위크에서도 입선 및 선정되었다. 특히 한지의 물성과 빛의 음영으로 마치 한 폭의 산수화 같은 산 능선의 아름다움을 입체적으로 표현한 조명 작업 <White Screen Lamp>으로 2018년 KCDF 한지 상품개발 공모전의 대상을 수상하였다.

Michel Heurtault (1966-) has collected and restored unique and historical parasols and umbrellas for the last 30 years, reproducing them and creating all-time favorite modern works inspired by them. In 2008, he opened a parasol studio called Parasolerie Heurtault named after him, and in 2011, he received the title of Living Heritage Company (EPV), which is given to a representative local industry based on their excellent technique, tradition, and craftsmanship by the French government. Later in 2013, he also received Maître d’Art (Master of Arts) from the Ministry of Culture in France. His antique collection spans from 1770 to the late 20th century and his modern works were displayed at the Tokyo National Museum in 2017 and the National Museum of China in 2019, with the exhibition «Wonderlab: Living Treasures of France», and at Bundeskunsthalle in Germany in 2018 with «Weather Report» as well as many other international exhibitions in cities worldwide. Moreover, he created costumes for films such as “Farewell, My Queen” (2013), “The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec” (2013), “Madame Bovary” (2015), and “Mademoiselle de Joncquières” (2018), as well as the drama “Versailles” and various theater props.
Majored in industrial design in Barcelona, Jungmo Kwon (1982-) has created lighting, furniture, and objects from various materials. He is interested in natural forms such as lights, birds, shadows, and daily objects, as well as geometric structures. He also recently presented lighting works using Hanji, textile, and metal as installation pieces. His works were nominated and selected in many well-known design weeks in Spain, Paris, and other parts of Europe. His recent work “White Screen Lamp” on the Grand Prix at KCDF Hanji Award, presenting physical Hanji with shades of light as a ridge of landscape painting.

Kim Yongho (1956-) is well known for his fashion brand advertisement photos in the 1990s. For a long time, he experimented in different genres such as fashion, advertisement, and fine arts, displaying his works in various exhibitions. In recent years, he expanded his career from photography to film media. He has held solo exhibitions at Daelim museum (‘mom’ 2018), Coex (‘Piyeon’ 2011), Ryuhwarang (‘Noble life’ 2012), Beyond Museum (‘Hyundai car art project - brilliant masterpiece’ 2013), and Jeju Haevichi Hotel (‘blow blow blow’ 2017) and has participated in many group shows.
