DEAR FRIENDS

Amy Brady

M

arch 3 marked another successful KeyBank Broadway Series launch! We announced these 2020-2021 critically acclaimed shows: To Kill A Mockingbird, Pretty Woman: The Musical, The Cher Show, The Prom, Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations, Moulin Rouge! The Musical and Hadestown. Playhouse Square continues to boast the largest number of season ticket holders for touring Broadway shows in the nation: record-breaking 48,629 for the 2019-2020 Series! And for that we have all of you to thank for your continued support as season ticket holders. That record-breaking total is the reason our audiences are the first to experience shows in their initial touring, like Hamilton and the upcoming Moulin Rouge!, even before other major cities. Together with our sponsors, donors and collaborations with neighboring businesses, Playhouse Square’s ongoing goal is to create the alchemy to turn a night in our district into an escape from life’s routines and give patrons a memorable experience. All components of our not-for-profit mission work synergistically to address every aspect of your visit — from an early arrival for a Broadway Buzz or dinner, then on to the ticket window, seating, concessions and, of course, the performances and sometimes post-show chats. To enhance any Playhouse Square visit, I recommend first searching through our website, PlayhouseSquare.org. Select a show or community engagement event, order pre-paid parking, purchase tickets online and even use our digital ticket delivery option. Your Playhouse Square visit might include any of the great dining spots that run the gourmet gamut from white-tablecloth to ethnic to coffeehouse eateries, all found within two blocks of our venues and perfect for pre-show dinners or post-show drinks or desserts. If your wish is to extend the experience overnight, Playhouse Square’s Crowne Plaza Hotel (with its full-service restaurant and bar) is just one block away. It is also the hotel of choice for many of the stars appearing on our stages. There is so much happening in our neighborhood we want you to experience. Whatever your reason to make Playhouse Square a destination, be assured our board, staff, volunteers and neighboring businesses work tirelessly to put out the welcome mat so that each Playhouse Square visit is as memorable as the last.

Best wishes,

Amy Brady Chair, Playhouse Square Board

SETTING THE STAGE

for success

We believe that all Cleveland youth should have access to high-quality arts education. Through the generosity of our donors, we have invested more than $5 million since 2016 to scale up neighborhood-based programs that now serve 3,000 youth year-round in music, dance, theater, photography, literary arts and curatorial mastery. That’s setting the stage for success. Find your passion, and partner with the Cleveland Foundation to make your greatest charitable impact.

t’s showtime! Welcome to the 2019-2020 KeyBank Broadway Series at Playhouse Square! As Cleveland’s hometown bank, KeyBank is proud to support Playhouse Square and help bring award winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series. Our passion goes beyond the financial services we provide our clients and extends to supporting the culture and hardworking attitude that Cleveland residents embody. We understand the responsibility we have in the community to concentrate our most valuable resources, time and energy, on the lifeblood of our city — the people, and are deeply committed to stabilizing and revitalizing our neighborhoods. Through 2018, KeyBank has made community investments totaling more than $423 million in Northeast Ohio as part of our National Community Benefits Plan, which supports low to moderate income individuals and communities through community development lending for affordable housing, small business lending, mortgage lending and transformative philanthropy. We are bringing hope and opportunity to the communities where we do business and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. playhousesquare.org

The valuable group of Playhouse Square volunteers, known as the “RedCoats,” because of their red blazers, are comprised of 2,000 men and women of all ages and backgrounds, all of whom share a passion for the theater and a desire to give back to the community. RedCoats believe so strongly in what Playhouse Square contributes to our community that they are willing to pledge their time and talents to every facet of Playhouse Square. Most volunteer at the 1,000+ performances we host each year — but many are also behind the scenes. What do RedCoats receive in return? They: …make new friends …make a contribution to the arts …feel appreciated …have fun as a valued member of the Playhouse Square “family” RedCoats must be able to make weekly commitments to volunteer 4 to 5 hours per shift. Matinee show crews may be scheduled anytime between 9 a.m. –5 p.m. Evening crews between 5:30 –11 p.m. Volunteers pick the best day and time to fit their schedule. We are always looking for new volunteers to join the team! Playhouse Square expects the same high standards of professionalism from its volunteers as it does from its full-time staff members. More information on becoming a RedCoat is available at playhousesquare.org/volunteer.

SPOTLIGHT ON Fundraising

Playhouse Square is committed to providing quality arts learning opportunities to enrich the lives of students, families, teachers and adults. The Playhouse Square Dazzle Awards, presented by Pat & John Chapman, recognizes excellence in Northeast Ohio high school musical theater programs and emphasizes the importance of the arts. Students participate in master classes and workshops throughout the year, as well as a week of intensive rehearsals leading up to the Dazzle Awards ceremony on Saturday, May 16. Following the Dazzle Awards, two of the top students will represent Cleveland at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards in New York City in June 2020. Our goal for the Dazzle Challenge is to raise $25,000 by June 30, 2020 to help the program grow and thrive. An additional generous contribution will be made by long-time Trustee John Chapman and his wife Pat, who are committed to helping to provide inspiring and engaging opportunities through the arts. PROGRAM NOTE

I

Gina Vernaci

n the early 1970s when there were few reasons to come to the unrenovated theaters at Playhouse Square, thankfully, there was rock ’n’ roll. This was the time where environmental aesthetics were forsaken in favor of being in the aortic-vibrating presence of your musical idols. In those years, the countercultural rock experience — aka the British Invasion — was sweeping across America and Cleveland faster than you could say My Sweet Lord. However, it was influences from Midwesterners such as Bob Dylan and Belkin Productions that brought vision to the launch of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. First, let’s step back across the pond to London, England, to the beginnings of this now iconic creation. Their first collaboration, Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, brought a bit of notoriety to the 20-something duo Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Soon, they began noodling on their next musical creation. King Richard and the Crusaders? King Saul? Finally, the Dean of London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral suggested they tell the story of the final days of the life of Jesus Christ. And so they did, perhaps with slightly more verve than this man-of-the-cloth had envisioned. The notion of telling this story of betrayal and execution through the eyes of Judas Iscariot was inspired by the 1964 Bob Dylan song “With God on Our Side.” The lyric of the song postures the double-cross of Judas’ kiss as Dylan ponders: You’ll have to decide ... Whether Judas Iscariot ... Had God on his side. Judas, from whose perspective Superstar is told, is a wounded spirit and a misfit. As a follower, he seems to love the doctrine that Christ espouses and simultaneously he is in doubt. For me, this is a bit reminiscent of Aaron Burr’s character in the musical Hamilton. In that piercing moment when he murders Hamilton, is he wishing death on his opponent or acting in a moment of self-preservation? As Judas offers the deadly kiss to Jesus, his destiny as a universally scorned antagonist is catapulted into the ages. Webber and Rice’s contemporary retelling of this ultimate betrayal turned into an unexpected journey, as the established theatrical kingpins of London’s West End told them, “this is the worst idea in history.” Desperate for a path with their new piece, the tenacious twosome turned to the music industry and the label that had released The Who’s rock opera Tommy. Ultimately, in September 1970, they struck a deal, releasing the double “brown” album and its 28-page libretto. The album topped the Billboard charts in 1971, landing the No. 1 slot at year-end and edging out Tapestry, Carole King’s gargantuan triumph. Although there was a passionate appeal for Superstar, the music sparked an outcry from traditional institutions. Initially, the “blasphemous” LP was banned by the BBC, perhaps better suited for the turntables south of Purgatory. Christians and Jews alike scoffed at it. However, small, unauthorized productions began popping up in schools and churches. In an attempt to protect the rights and garner the growing enthusiasm for the piece, a London record producer decided to stage Superstar as a U.S. arena tour, playing Cleveland’s Public Auditorium in July 1971 during the initial month of this groundbreaking incarnation. That engagement and many dates throughout the Midwest were promoted by the legendary impresarios Jules and Mike Belkin of Belkin Productions. The Midwest is again making its mark with the 50-year celebration of the album. At Playhouse Square, we are adding 22 local string players, bringing the total number of musicians to 33. The arrangements were created especially for our engagement by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s company, the Really Useful Group. And on March 23, Sir Tim Rice is traveling to Cleveland to accept Playhouse Square’s highest honor, The Star Award. These events are only scheduled to occur here. After experiencing Superstar in the spirit of its original youthful vigor, you may find yourself really changed.

Enjoy,

TIM RICE (Lyrics) has worked in music, theatre and films since 1965 when he met Andrew Lloyd Webber, a fellow struggling songwriter. Rather than pursue Tim’s ambitions to write rock or pop songs they turned their attention to Andrew’s obsession – musical theatre. Their first collaboration (lyrics by Tim, music by Andrew) was an unsuccessful show based on the life of Dr. Barnardo, the Victorian philanthropist, The Likes of Us. Their next three works together were much more successful- Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. Tim has since worked with other distinguished popular composers such as Elton John (The Lion King, Aida), Alan Menken (Aladdin, King David, Beauty and the Beast), Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (Chess) and most recently, Stuart Brayson (From Here to Eternity). A new production of From Here to Eternity made its début at the Finger Lakes Musical Theatre, New York, in June 2016, and played in the Fall of 2017 at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine. In December 2016 selections from the score were performed at three official events to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Further US productions are in the works. In March 2017, two films with new Tim Rice material were released. Disney’s fresh interpretation of Beauty and the Beast, directed by Bill Condon, features three new songs written with Alan Menken, and the latest Roger Goldby film, Time of Their Lives, starring Joan Collins and Pauline Collins, features Morty and Me, a song written with Pete Hobbs, sung by Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Tim is also an executive producer of the latter movie. He formed his own cricket team in 1973 and was President of MCC in 2002. He is a regular broadcaster/pre-

senter on BBC Radio 2, drawing on his extensive knowledge of the history of popular music since Elvis was a lad. He has won several awards*, mainly for the wrong thing or for simply turning up.

TIMOTHY SHEADER (Director) has been Artistic Director and Joint Chief Executive of Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre since 2007. For Regent’s Park, productions include: A Tale of Two Cities, Jesus Christ Superstar (Evening Standard Award winner, Best Musical; Olivier Award winner, Best Musical Revival); Running Wild (also UK
