NEWS IN BRIEF
LINCOLN WELCOMES STEAMPUNK FESTIVAL
World famous Steampunk festival, Weekend At The Asylum returns to Lincoln this month. A Steampunk market will fill Castle Square and more events will be available inside the castle itself with a wristband. Check out to www.AsylumSteampunk.co.uk for more information.
AROMA TURNS 10
Coffee Aroma will be celebrating it’s 10th anniversary on the 1st August with an evening in homage to the bohemian coffee society of the 1920s. Zeph Brown & Del Davison, Lauren Davidson and Alex more will be providing music. There’ll be a 1920s style cocktail menu and, of course, birthday cake.
BUSKERS IN THE BAIL
It was with sad ears that we heard about the cancellation of last month’s scheduled Funny As Folk festival. The team are working on planning next year’s festival hopefully with no hiccups this time. In the mean time some of the same brains host a weekly improv jam night at the Magna Carta. “Buskers In The Bail is an improv. jam night held every Sunday from 7.30pm. Bring your instruments and join together with other folks to craft a song, with the ideas of improvisation, listening and working together at the core. It's a little like the mad-hatters tea party.”
A Guide To Pub Etiquette For Steampunks by Dr Cornelius Porridge Welcome, dear reader, to my world... the wonderful world of Steampunk. It’s a movement that brings together science fiction and the Victorian era with good old crafting and a great deal of fun. I, Dr Cornelius Porridge (you must have heard of my adventures!), have learnt many a lesson from my exploration of the public houses this fine galaxy has to offer and I feel the need to share them with A.L.E's dear readers in honour of Lincoln’s infamous Weekend At The Asylum. 1. Be prepared to answer questions as a Steampunk, the commonest being 'What is Steampunk?' Have a short answer but be polite and respectful, you represent a whole community of fine people. 2. Do not be tempted to point your gun/sword/ crossbow (replica or otherwise) at unsuspecting members of the public. People will ‐and have!‐ called the local constabulary over such matters. You’ll end up being the one with a gun/sword/crossbow up your nose ( Editor’s note: I’m not entirely sure in which century Dr Porridge last encountered the British police. ) 3. Be respectful to the staff at all times. It can be slightly unnerving serving drinks to returning veterans of the Martian wars. If you find a pub that is open to Steampunk it should be nurtured and visited regularly. 4. And finally, the most important point of all ‐ HAVE FUN. If you're not having fun you're missing the essence of Steampunk. Make your way to pubgeek.co.uk for more of Dr Cornelius Porridge's Steampunk etiquette lessons. Dr Porridge is a member of the grand and renowned Society of Lincolnshire Steampunks though his opinions are his own.
