2022 will be the 45th anniversary The BMW NZ Polo Open
BMW NZ Polo Open
The 45th anniversary of New Zealand’s famous polo event, The BMW NZ Polo Open, will take place on Sunday 20 February at Auckland Polo Club in Clevedon. This year sees six teams competing in the competition and while the 2022 event will be without any international players due to COVID, the calibre of the teams will be particularly competitive promising to deliver an exhilarating showcase of the best in New Zealand polo. For the first time since the event was founded, two South Islanders will each captain a team, Pete Dormer and George Cooper-Dixon; Dormer captained the NZ Polo Open winning team in 2016. To complement the action on the field, there will be plenty of exceptional hospitality and side-line action with an exciting new twist on Fashion at the Polo. The ‘Horsepower’ race between a BMW and a polo pony will be sure to entertain just before the main polo match.

Well, what a difference two months makes. Whilst the previous issue was published in the midst of winter’s doom, gloom and global uncertainty surrounding the COVID situation, as this issue is arriving with our readers, we have cause for real optimism. ‘The shortest day’ is already some way behind us; the first signs of spring are upon us with the first daffodils valiantly emerging from the cold earth; the UK arena season is in full swing; whilst finally, public health restrictions have all but been removed across the entire country, with masks, social distancing and forced self-isolation no longer on everyone’s minds. 2020 and 2021 were two very challenging years for most of us and as the oldest polo publication in the world, on behalf of the Polo Times team, I would like to thank every reader who has not only contributed over the years, but contacted me with thoughts, ideas and inspiration – we could not have done it without you. As many people religiously keep their old copies going back decades, what really will people think when reading old back issues of Polo Times, (or any publication for that matter), in years to come… I guess, the same as when one reads those journals of 104 years ago when Spanish flu ran rampant as a deadly global influenza pandemic. There are also similarities in that we still have global powers jostling for the limelight on the world centre stage. With fuel prices – particularly gas – rocketing skywards as a direct consequence of the tensions, there will be no winners. Therefore, we must all hope and pray that the posturing which is currently being metered out will not see tensions escalate further, but rather, that diplomacy will be the order of the day. Being part of the polo community means many things, to many people. For most of us, it is overwhelmingly, the camaraderie which goes with enjoying similar things in life, with like-minded individuals. It really does not seem to matter what level of polo you play, new friendships are made, regardless of whether you are playing the high goal, or club chukkas. So, with ponies shortly coming back into work for the eagerly awaited 2022 polo season, here’s to friends of old meeting up again and to new acquaintances soon to be made.

Gauntlet of Polo 2022 Teams
This year there are nine teams competing in the Gauntlet of Polo, which has been opened up to include individual team entries for all three tournaments of the series, which means that there will be 20 teams competing for the first time. There are nine teams entered for all three Gauntlet of Polo titles (C.V. Whitney Cup, USPA Gold Cup & U.S. Open Polo Championship) and therefore will be eligible to claim the title if they win all three tournaments. The series begins next month with The C.V. Whitney Cup (6 – 27 February), followed by The USPA Gold Cup (1 – 27 March) and conclude with The U.S. Open Polo Championship (29 March 29 – 24 April). This year sees a revision in the prize money format, with a total of $200,000 up for grabs; $50,000 will be awarded to each of the winning teams of The C.V. Whitney Cup and USPA Gold Cup, and $100,000 in prize money will be presented to the winner of The U.S. Open Polo Championship.

Obituary Claire Tomlinson 1944 – 2022 14 February 1944 – 12 January 2022
www.polotimes.co.uk
Photograph by ©www.imagesofpolo.com
Claire was the daughter of Ethel and Lascelles Arthur Lucas, founders of Woolmers Park Polo Club in Hertfordshire in 1949 and instrumental characters in the revival of polo in the UK after the Second World War. Claire was a talented sportswoman from an early age, riding and hunting as a child and while at Millfield school she was selected for the British Junior Fencing Team competing in France, Holland and Hungary. Later while at Oxford University Claire was shortlisted for the Olympic fencing team. Whilst at Oxford University, the polo team were short of players and Claire took part in the 1964 Varsity Match, becoming the first female player in the history of the match, although the Oxford University Polo Club (OUPC) had cautiously entered her as Mr Lucas rather than Miss Lucas. Two years later, in 1966, Claire became the first female Captain of OUPC and in her final year at university was rated 0 goals. Claire had always wanted to visit Argentina and when she graduated her father agreed to pay half her airfare if she got a job, which Claire promptly did doing fertilizer research in Buenos Aires for a British firm. In September 1966, Claire’s brother John visited Argentina to source ponies for the following year’s high goal season, and so Claire began her first horse-hunting foray which continued throughout her life. It was during this time that Claire began to play 25 goal practices to try the horses and so her polo improved, by 1967 with her fertilizer project completed and 25 ponies gathered, Claire arranged to fly them back to England, something which had only been done a handful of times before. After an interesting flight home, with a burst tire in Las Palmas on the Canary Islands and the plane’s navigation system struck by lightning, they safely landed in Gatwick where fire engines lined the runway! In 1967 Claire was raised to two goals, alongside Lavinia Roberts, and they became the first British women to rise above 1 goal. In 1968 Claire married Simon Tomlinson, they played the 1969 season at Cheshire Polo Club as Los Locos, adopting the red and green colours of Woolmers Park. A decade later, now based in Gloucestershire and after winning a handful of low and medium goal trophies including The County Cup at Cirencester Park Polo Club in 1972 and 1977, Los Locos moved to the high goal; however women could not play the high goal. Claire’s initial request was refused, but she persevered and collected signatures and presented the petition to the HPA Stewards who relented and in 1979 Los Locos stormed into their first high goal season winning The Queen’s Cup. Claire later became the first female player to reach 5 goals (mixed handicap) winning some of the most prestigious titles in the country including: Cowdray Park Challenge, Cheltenham Cup, Apsley Cup, Harrison Cup, Junior County Cup, Smith’s Lawn Cup, Royal Windsor Cup, Duke of Wellington, Mountbatten Cup, Archie David Cup, Kingscote Cup, Stockland Cup and County Cup.
After a decade in the high goal, Los Locos returned to the medium goal and with their children – Emma, Luke and Mark – now playing polo, Claire and Simon founded the Beaufort Polo Club in 1989. The early 1980s also saw a ground put in at Down Farm, which had been the home of the Beaufort Polo Club from 1929 – 1939, and their doors opened to the Pony Club and new members when nearby Cirencester Park Polo Club closed entry for new members due to it being full. Claire was also one of the first ever polo coaches, coaching the English international team in Australia, Argentina and Mexico, in 1993 alongside Hugh Dawnay she set up a coaching system for the HPA and was always admired for her ability to coach novices and professionals alike. On Wednesday 12 January, the polo community lost one of its trailblazers with the sad passing of Claire Tomlinson at the age of 77-years-old. Claire suffered from advanced dementia and died peacefully at home with her three children, Luke, Emma and Mark, at her side.

January, a weekend stay in the Exclusive Hotel Group’s five-star South Lodge Luxury Spa including a delicious dinner for sponsors, players and their families on the Saturday night, plus a Sunday roast at the polo clubhouse to round off the weekend. “It is a wonderfully unique tournament weekend, where the aim is to have 12 like-minded
players spending a weekend together as a truly social occasion,” explained Bunn, “We wanted to reintroduce much needed camaraderie that can be missing in polo these days, as everyone’s lives have just got so busy. If only all polo tournaments could be like this!” After a nervous wait for an update on COVID protocols from Boris Johnson, the Polo Times, February 2022

of Inspired. After the pony change, it was Morley’s turn to showcase some outstanding play as he ran the ball end to end with the first goal for Simon Arber’s team. Just before the chukka bell, Good scored a great back hander, leaving the scores even going into the second chukka. The match then exploded into life with outstanding play by both teams. Good scored early in the second chukka to put Escobedo’s team back in the lead, but with some great team play from Joe Arber and Morley, the scores were quickly back level. A couple of quick goals on the rebound led to the first half finishing with a great back hand by Good and a lead of 5-4. The third chukka saw Good missing a two pointer by mere millimetres, and the father and son Arber combo produced five goals in two minutes, both nailing two pointers. Escobedo produced a two pointer of her own to take the score to 14-11, but with Joe Arber playing a fantastic game and Morley delivering a 60 yard goal, Astra ran out the winners, 19-12.

fifth Inspired Arena Polo Masters finally got the green light to go ahead, having missed last year’s fixture due to the pandemic. Four well-matched teams took to the arena to battle it out for this year’s trophy. Simon Arber returned with his son Joe and professional Tom Morley for Astra; Ana Escobedo, arena specialist Jonny Good and Guards Polo Academy’s Ebe Sievwright made up Inspired; and organiser Bunn’s 2020 winning team Playnation returned with Hickstead Polo Manager Niall Donnelly and Charlie Wooldridge of 12 Oaks fame – all three teams have played every year since the tournament’s inception. This year saw a new team join the fold with Welsh Captain Ricky Cooper, professional Jack Hyde and Royston Prisk playing for Bell Fruits Games. Saturday’s games were slightly dampened by somewhat biblical rain, but Hickstead’s arena held up well and all games were completed on schedule. The first game ended with a convincing victory for Astra against Bell Fruits Games, while the second was a much tighter affair with the lead changing hands regularly throughout, before Inspired made it into the Final 14-13. Sunday saw the Sussex sun return, and the action kicked off with the Subsidiary Final between Playnation and Bell Fruit Games – Bunn’s team were the eventual winners after a fast-flowing game with both teams scoring freely. The Final started a little cautiously, with both teams testing each other, but it soon went up a gear in the third minute, with Good clearing the ball out of defence with a strong header after which he then charged up the arena forcing a penalty goal in favour

ichard Mille secured the St. Regis World Snow Polo Championship title with a 9-6 win against St. Regis in the Final on Sunday 19 December, the win signified their third win in the last four years and Pablo MacDonough, who has been on all three of those winning teams, was chosen as the Most Valuable Player and commented, “It was good to win for the third time, we had a very good game. We played well. The most important thing was we won many throw-ins and we scored. It was an advantage towards the end of the game”. Richard Mille’s throw-in success, winning 90 per cent in the Final, meant that they led in the first half and also outscored St. Regis in the second half. Jessie Bray scored back-to-back goals early on in the third chukka, he took the High Scorer Award after scoring 12 goals in the tournament, however Nacho Figueras swiftly scored, followed by penaty conversions for Siegel Magness and Melissa Ganzi. The fourth and final chukka saw Richard Mille lead throughout, slowly increasing their advantage to 9-4 before St. Regis scored their last two goals. The victory was all the sweeter after Richard Mille’s 11-10 overtime shootout in 2020 against WPL.

ith memories of New Year’s Day celebrations waning, on Saturday 2 January International Polo Club Palm Beach’s year kicked off with their first Final of the season for The Iglehart Cup on the U.S. Polo Assn. Field, with Beverly Polo vs La Fe and spectators were treated to a thrilling, overtime clincher which saw Beverly Polo’s Lucas Diaz Alberdi score the golden goal to confirm the title. Beverly Polo were the first to add to the scoreboard with a penalty 2 conversion from Jorge ‘Tolito’ Ocampo Jr., who was later named Most Valuable Player, which was swiftly answered by La Fe with two goals in quick succession from Robi Bilbao and Louis Devaleix. The second chukka began in a similar ilk with another penalty goal from Ocampo, but La Fe’s reply was muted by Diaz Alberdi’s first goal of the match as well as two back-to-back goals from Ocampo and despite trading goals in the third chukka, Beverly Polo’s initial advantage remained and the half-time bell rang out, 6-3. La Fe emerged revitalised after half-time and frenziedly scored three consecutive goals courtesy of Bilbao and Francisco Elizalde which erased Beverly Polo’s lead. Hilario Figueras regained the lead for Beverly Polo in the opening of the fifth chukka, La Fe’s Devaleix suffered an injury in the seventh minute but was able to remain in the game and Lucas Escobar secured back-to-back goals to take the lead for La Fe, 8-7. The sixth chukka dawned with tensions high, La Fe suffered a series of fouls which opened the door for Beverly Polo’s Ocampo to send home three consecutive goals but La Fe scored two crucial goals, pushing the Final into overtime. Alberdi ended the battle with the last goal of the match, securing the 11-10 win for Beverly Polo.

Coming Soon IMPROVING POLO SKILLS By Rege Ludwig Do you know how to use the mechanics of your body to help the polo horse decelerate most effectively for you, turn more quickly for you, and accelerate back up to speed, rapidly? Learn how to accomplish all three from my book, Improving Polo Skills, Book One, Riding. Decelerate Position
Accelerate Position
Do you know how the way you grip the mallet handle affects the way you hit the ball? Are you aware of how the strong fist grip compares to the more soft open-hand grip? Both situations are discussed in depth in my book, Improving Polo Skills, Book Two, Hitting. Open Hand Grip
Fist Grip
If you were umpiring a game, would you know how to use the line of the ball (LOB) and the right of way (ROW) to control the safety of the game? If you were playing the No. 1 position, do you know what the differences of your responsibilities are when playing in the offense mode of play as compared to playing in the defense mode of play? Both topics are discussed in great detail in my book, Improving Polo Skills, Book Three, Strategy. Line of Ball & Right of Way
Each of the above topics and many others are dealt with extensively in my soon-to-be released Polo Educational Program, which consists of five major books of approximately 100 pages each, in excess of 20 booklets consisting of about 10 pages each, plus an approximate five-minute-long video for each of the booklets demonstrating what is described in the booklets. My intention is to produce the most extensive and complete educational program available to the modern world of polo. All of the approximate 50 pieces of polo education information will be available in one meticulously cross-referenced package in early 2022. More information can be found on my website RegePolo.com

Smiles all round for Patagones!
ain delayed play by two days, but Final day rolled around on Tuesday 18 January under cold skies on International Polo Club Palm Beach’s Isla Carroll West field, with Beverly Polo vs Patagones. The two teams met for the first time in the Final, with Beverly Polo on a high following their over-time win in The Iglehart Cup just a few weeks earlier, while Patagones were looking to add to their 2020 Ylvisaker Cup win, both teams were no strangers to one another having played against each other at all levels over the years, which only added to the competition as each side knew their oppositions’ playing style and horses. The Final got off to a penaltyridden start with a flurry of penalties which eventually resulted in Patagones’ Joaquin Avendano being sent to the sin bin for two minutes after he received his second yellow card. Beverly Polo were over-eager to capitalise on their player advantage and fell foul themselves, allowing Patagones to convert a Penalty 4. The third chukka eventually saw the first field goal of the match for Patagones’ Santiago Wulff which was swiftly followed by a goal in reply from Ocampo Jr. to end the first half 5-2 in favour of Patagones. Ocampo Jr. exploded into the second half which saw four goals scored by Beverly Polo to level the scores, Patagones’ Tomás García del Río replied with two goals of his own but foul play resulted in penalty opportunities for Beverly Polo who took the lead for the first time in the match, 8-7. The fifth chukka saw each team score three goals, with Patagones rebounding with consecutive field goals from Wulff and Avendano. The final chukka got off to a swift start with both teams eager to score, it was Ocampo Jr. who reached the scoreboard first and their advantage was extended after Avendano was given his second yellow card of the match for dangerous riding and was sent to the sin bin; however Beverly Polo failed to capitalise on the three vs four player advantage and the clock ticked down with the scores tied at 10-10, pushing the match into over-time.

Avengers returned in the second chukka with a two pointer, but Amos were quick to reply with a goal of their own to level the scores at 7-7, Amos continued to storm ahead to take a 12-8 lead at the end of the second
chukka. Immediately after the half-time break Amaya flew down the arena to score Amos’ thirteenth goal of the Final, Max Charlton sped round trying to get a goal for Avengers but luck wasn’t in his favour and Amos scored another flurry of goals, however a penalty shot by Charlton in the last 30 seconds of the third chukka saw the scoreboard read 18-9 going into the fourth and final chukka with Amos pulling away from Avengers and looking likely to take the title. Avengers scored the first goal of the fourth chukka and narrowly missed out on another which was fished out of the goalmouth by Amaya. Bin Drai Polo team scored the first and only goal during the first chukka of the Final. Habtoor Polo displayed an excellent defensive play through the next chukka, thwarting its opponent’s efforts to further its lead. The excitement kicked up a notch as Justo Cuitino from Habtoor Polo tied the game in the last 30 seconds of the penultimate chukka. Without missing a beat, the Bin Drai Polo team scored a flurry of goals in the last chukka and drastically paved the road to its victory at 4 goals to 1. The last tournament of the year in the Club’s 2021 calendar, The AHPRC Festive League Final, featured Bin Drai vs Mahra and was closely fought throughout, with the scores tying throughout the match. However, the match took an unusual turn due to an injured Bin Drai player which led to the team deciding not to continue to play, therefore Mahra took the win with a 3-3 tie. Cristobal Sanchez Duggan was the Most Valuable Player and Olgasan was the Best Playing Pony. The day was filled with festivities including a galloping Santa Claus who alongside the little helpers gave gifts to the children watching the matches.

I don’t think it could have gone better for the first year. I would love to see it played again next year.” The inaugural match got off to a slow start, with not many goals scored, missed opportunities and fouls hanging over the
young teams and the first half ended 3-1 to Port Mayaca. The third chukka saw Port Mayaca begin to click and they gained momentum in the fourth chukka, which saw Santino Magrini pick up the pace for his team; Hilario Figueras kept his team in the game with his second goal of the match in the fifth chukka, however Magrinin quickly replied to maintain Port Mayaca’s lead and they went into the final chukka leading 6-2. Figueras tried to bring Dutta Corp/Show+ back into contention with two more goals, but the Magrini brothers had other ideas and scored to end the match with an 8-4 win for Port Mayaca. Santino Magrini was awarded the Most Valuable Player prize and Don

In the beginning my dad didn’t want me to play polo because it’s an expensive sport, but I ended up loving it and I still do. I loved going around on little ponies and being led around when I was 3 or 4,” Secunda said. “After that I was using a little mallet on short horses. Nowadays, I have fun playing it and I like the bond with the horses. It makes your mind sharp as well and getting into a good school when I’m older.” The Major Collin Memorial was won by Power Group Total Care (Benjamin Obregon, Valentina Tarazona, Lion Mandelbaum, Sebastian Mandelbaum) after they tied with Mayer Ranch 1-1 and defeated GJ Racing 2-1 in their second match. Power Group Total Care’s Valentina Tarazona was the Most Valuable Player and Bayita, owned and played by Antonio Villamil, was the Best Playing Pony.

Inter-Service Challenge Match teams
The first Inter-Service arena match was held on Saturday 11 December at Tedworth Park Polo Club between the HACKETT Army development team and RAF team. The Army got off to a good start with LCpl Flic Townend scoring the opening goal. The RAF were quick to react and demonstrated their experience in the arena with George Linfield-Brown scoring back to back two pointers. In the second chukka, the Army started to adjust to playing in the arena and the second chukka ended with the score 6-8. Each team pushed on hard to get more points on the board and a few errors crept in on both sides. The final chukka proved the most exciting, the Army were down 8-12 but a two point penalty by Capt
Jess Wood and a goal by Maj Alex Humphreys helped to pull the Army back into contention. Unfortunately for the Army, the RAF were relentless and with excellent support from Ben Lane, Ross Thompson was able to secure the victory for the RAF with the winning goal. Reduce Injuries New year, new bulletproof body!
A constant issue of being a polo player is that your risk of getting injured is pretty high. Sometimes injuries are unavoidable; a horse tripping or falling, a horse standing on your foot or from a questionable ride off! So, let’s once again focus on what you can control; joint stability, suppleness, and overall strength to help bulletproof the body. Maintaining physical stability takes more than a single structure working in isolation to
provide joint support. Instead, lots of parts — muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, and other soft tissues — all have to work together to produce a stable joint. Stable joints help you avoid injury, such as shoulder dislocations and ACL sprains. The factors that help maintain stability are usually broken up into separate categories: the active mechanisms (the muscles) and the passive mechanisms (everything else, like
Reducing Injury Strategies 1.Ensure that your workout programme includes compound exercises that simulate the movements of polo during a game.
These could be squats with rotations or single leg balance whilst simulating the swinging motion.
the ligaments, bone shapes, cartilage, joint capsule, and so on). The components from each type of mechanism must communicate with each other to provide stability. If the muscles (active restraints) don’t fire as they should or are weak, stability is compromised, and if the ligaments, tendons, and so on (passive restraints) have been compromised, injury may result as well.
2. Add in exercises that include single leg and arm work to improve your balancing skills and identify any weak areas. Single leg see saw, plank with arm reach.

3. Muscle activation exercises encourage passive muscles to wake up and activate to support the joint during movements. Try adding in a few of these pre-ride or preworkout: Glute bridge, single leg balance, superman, back extension.

4. Don’t forget to eat well too – lots of calcium rich foods such as leafy greens, almonds, seeds, fortified drinks and food, beans and lentils. These foods will help strengthen the joints and aid in recovery. Lean high-quality proteins such as nuts, white meat, fish and seeds are also crucial to muscle repair. 5. Warm up and stretch daily! About 90 percent of players we talk to rarely warm up before riding let alone for an important game. A dynamic mobility routine will help to keep the joints supple whilst strengthen and stabilising the surrounding muscles. Check out our Instagram page @chukka_wellness for an effective mobility routine.

PADDOCK POWER POWERING PERFORMANCE
PADDOCK POWER ORIGINAL
Horses at grass or in training thrive on PADDOCK POWER ORIGINAL lick with added protein and a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals. This is no ordinary lick it’s a balancer in a bucket! Paddock Power will help your horse prepare for the winter months by supporting it’s immune system and giving it the internal tools to fight mud fever, rain scald and the annual ailments over the winter months. We all like to watch our budget over the winter but sometimes you need to invest to reap the rewards. By supplementing the grass and hay/haylage over the winter with Paddock Power you can really boost your horse’s resilience to our unpredictable English winters. Right now, our horses are changing their coats from summer to winter, and this requires a lot of energy, vitamins, and minerals. These vitamins and minerals are not abundant in the traditional English pasture, and most of us have stopped hard feeding our horses. Paddock Power Original will supplement what we are no longer getting from hard feed. Most horses are running on reserves by the end of a full season, whatever the level, and need a pre-winter boost! Paddock Power provides what they need to help them have a fruitful winter and return in the spring recharged and eager to play.

Feeding those in winter work Firstly, I wish you all a very happy 2022 – let’s hope it is a good one with plenty of polo! Since the Christmas break, I have been asked a few questions about feeding over the winter months with some aimed at horses in work and playing arena polo whilst others relate to those turned out on their winter break. Q: When my ponies are playing arena during the winter months, do I still need to give them electrolytes? A: The simple answer is YES! They will still be sweating, and those electrolyte salts lost in the sweat will need to be replaced with an electrolyte supplement. As always, I would supplement only when the horses are sweating, probably not every day – such as days off, quiet days or possibly days on the exercise track when the weather is cold. Make sure you read the manufacturer’s recommended quantities of the supplement, whether it be powder, liquid or syringe to ensure you are feeding the correct quantities, and how to administer it – in the water, a sloppy feed or syringed. 42

Always ensure there is free access to water for the horses to remain hydrated at all times, with good access to forage which will act as a reservoir in the hind gut to aid hydration during exercise. Q: A couple of my ponies that are playing arena have gone a little dull in the coat and their skin seems to be dry and scurfy, what should I do? A: There are a few suggestions when horses are looking a bit dull coated at this time of the year, especially when being clipped. I would suggest trying the following: • Ensure the diet is balanced – feeding the right amount of feed for workload will ensure all essential vitamins and minerals are being received for general good health, which includes skin and coat health as well. • Adding a good ‘glug’ of soya or linseed oil to the feed or using an oil supplement such as Outshine or EquiJewel, will help to bring back the coat shine and allow the skin to not be so dry and more supple. • Sometimes, if the forage is not of great quality, it may not be providing all those essential nutrients that the concentrate ration should be complementing, so ensuring enough of a good quality forage is being fed and possibly substituting the forage with a beet pulp or an alfa with oil, will help to pick up the overall nutrient content of the diet. • And, not forgetting those basic management ideas – brushing out the sweat, washing off well, and NOT over rugging. Q: I have a mare playing arena polo who is proving to be quite hot, she also plays in the summer and is better suited to grass as she likes to run, but I need to settle her in the Arena without her dropping condition – help?! A: Great question! Some horses are just suited to arena or grass but we can sometimes use their diets to help them adjust. As arena polo is a lot more ‘stop/start’ with very short bursts of speed may cause some horses that are used to being able to run to become quite www.polotimes.co.uk
excitable or ‘hot’, so my suggestions would be as follows: • Initially, to help reduce the excitable energy I would opt for a low starch diet, although, because calories are required to help prevent her losing condition, it’s best to avoid a traditional Conditioning Cube or Conditioning Mix and look at something like Ease & Excel Cubes or Ease & Excel Mix. The calorie intake will still be met, but the starch (which can exacerbate excitable energy) will be reduced considerably. • Monitor how much forage is being eaten – if the hay is not being eaten up during the day or night it’s worth providing an alternative fibre source… o A more palatable hay or haylage – ideally less stalk, more leaf o A separate feed bowl containing a couple of scoops of Fibre-Beet or Dengie Meadow Grass, for example • Splitting the feeds over three meals per day rather than two large meals – to increase absorption and digestion of the concentrate feed, no more than 1½ round bowl Stubbs scoops of cubes/mix/chaff/ beet in one feed. • Looking at a pre/probiotic supplement to help support the beneficial bacteria in the hind gut work more effectively. • If she doesn’t settle after trying the above suggestions, I would have the conversation with your vet regarding Gastric Ulcers (EGUS) and whether to treat or investigate further. Q: Usually, I play my horses from the field, but this winter we are having to keep them in, and I have had a couple of episodes of impaction colic, what would you suggest I do to help this? A: Oh, how frustrating, but you are not alone and there are things we can do to hopefully help! Firstly, I would keep a close eye on their droppings – are they becoming too firm? I would also suggest keeping an eye on how much they are drinking, if they are used to being out and not drinking from buckets they may be intimidated by the narrowness of a bucket so a ‘trug’ on the floor might be better suited. I would also suggest feeding a sloppy beet pulp to really help keep the wet fibre going through the digestive tract, especially if the horses are on hay or a dry haylage. If you (or they!!) are not so keen on the beet pulp then feed a scoop of chaff and add a scoop or so of water to it so you are still increasing the water content and digestible fibre in the diet. Have a look at your hay or haylage – if it is very ‘stalky’ it may not be as digestible – perhaps mixing it with a soft leafy hay will help to resolve the problem until a new batch of forage comes in? To help with the digestion of the fibre, you may want to consider adding a pre/probiotic supplement to their diets as well.
Knowledge

Q: Since Christmas, my wintering ponies have dropped off a little condition, what should I do? A: Very often those horses turned out over the winter will maintain their condition during the first half of the winter, and as the winter weather begins to get harsher after Christmas, we often find the horses will drop off condition. If you are already supplementing with hay or haylage in the field already, this is great. What might therefore be the problem is that the forage is not providing adequate calories and therefore some hard feed would be necessary to help stop the loss of condition – a heaped scoop of Conditioning Cubes per day would suffice as this adds a few calories, some quality protein and vitamins and minerals – perfect! You could also consider putting field licks out in the fields for them to take on some extra supplementation of vitamins and minerals. Q: I have been offering my wintering horses extra hay this winter, the fields they are in have plenty of grass, and they don’t seem to be all that interested in the hay, does this matter? A: Yes, we do see this from time to time, and if you are lucky enough to have winter grazing that is dry this is a ‘win win’ situation! This year in particular the grass didn’t stop growing until quite late, so it is likely they are getting enough ‘gut fill’ and fibre from the grass. I would, however, keep offering them some hay, particularly now (after Christmas) as the colder weather is with us, they will want to eat more long fibre to ensure their ‘central heating system’ is working effectively (also known as the hind gut)! Don’t put huge amounts out for them, just a few small scattered piles, and see if they are interested. Once they begin to tuck in, you will need to keep them topped up – they are hungry for extra fibre! Away & Alone – Not Anymore Self-examination & virtual doctor visit The actual health crisis affected everybody and has resulted in a sudden and dramatic shift in the delivery of clinical care for patients with sports medicine injuries, away from in-person outpatient clinic visits to remote tele-health evaluations. Different videoconferencing platforms are widely available and user-friendly apps enable face-to-face patient-clinician interaction. A consequence of social distancing measures and imposed restrictions on in-person evaluations is that clinicians and patients have been forced to use videoconferencing. Several studies across an array of medical disciplines have reported that, compared with in-person visits, tele-health visits have similar patient satisfaction levels, while concomitantly reducing travel costs, visit times, wait times, and overall health care costs. One common view was that musculoskeletal tele-health visits are limited without an in-person physical examination. But with a comprehensive description and the help of screen share instructions, a shoulder and knee evaluation can take place virtually.
bras or tank tops and sport shorts. Shoes and socks can be left out. Optimal patient preparation is with a digital brochure which has instructions for the explicit moves.
Shoulder Examination
The patient should be asked to turn so that the camera is able to visualize the front, side, and back of the affected shoulder for a thorough inspection. An inspection of both shoulders should be performed to evaluate obvious muscle atrophy, deformities, prior incisions, scars, skin lesions or rashes, swelling, ecchymosis, or erythema. Common injuries like bone fractures, AC joint distortions, full tendon ruptures or dislocations can be detected very well with these tests as shown in the pictures. More complicated pathologies may need the help of a household member to execute the physical examination or help to detect painful areas.
Technical aspects
One common view was that musculoskeletal tele-health visits are limited without an inperson physical examination. With the help of some gadgets like a laptop with camera / cell phone / shopping bag / water bottle and towel an overview of joint functions and limitations can be examined without the need of a physical examiner when the patients themselves steps into this role. But with the results of the selfexamination and with the help of a questionnaire or an interview, the next steps for a comprehensive shoulder and knee physical examination can be prepared. The camera distance should be 10 to 15 feet in an elevated position. It is better if the player wears minimal clothes like sport 44

Knee Examination
Before the start of the knee examination, the patient should arrange his surroundings to be able to lie comfortably in an outstretched position. Lower back pain and radiating pain to the lower extremities should be ruled out. Pictured is a relevant core exam including an overall inspection, range-of-motion testing, motor testing, and sensory testing. Special testing for ligamentous or meniscal injuries can be tailored by the physician depending on the player’s suspected abnormality. Patellofemoral joint injury and ligamentous instability can be detected, and also postoperative knee examination is feasible. A combination of both examinations will be executed within a 15 min interval.
Limitations
In fact, in a randomised, controlled trial of orthopaedic visits performed via tele-health compared with in-person consultations, physicians rated their ability to examine patients as good or very good in 98 percent of tele-health visits, with no significant differences between groups and no adverse safety events. Malpositioning of the patient and camera, and certain camera angles and player positions may not allow the clinician to interpret certain tests with the same accuracy as an in-person exam. The diagnostic accuracy of these tests when performed by a player or patient or untrained remote examiner and interpreted by a clinician have yet to be defined, but they are likely lower than published values for the same tests performed by an experienced examiner in person.
Outlook
The next step in modern medicine is complete and tele-health is here to stay. With the help of electronic and communication devices, musculoskeletal complaints make
A tele-health knee examination
it possible that players can get help even if based in remote areas. While tele-health visits will not entirely replace in-person visits for sports medicine patients, they offer a wide array of advantages for polo players regarding speed and access to healthcare professionals. In the near future, wearable sensors will help screen and identify players who underperform and
need help to diagnose the limiting factors and prevent accidents before they occur or overuse takes place. For more information on Polodoc contact Andreas Krüger at drmedkrueger@gmail.com or www.polodoc.ch

Playing Tips
Playing tips with Rege Ludwig Joystick & Child on Shoulders Renowned polo coach, Rege Ludwig gives his expert advice on how to get more out of your game Within my style of teaching, I use analogies to emphasise the intent of what a concept is suggesting. Two of the more significant analogies I use relative to riding, and/or, playing the polo horse are: 1. Joystick 2. Child on Shoulders I use these two analogies to stress the fact that how you use yourself on the horse’s back (intentionally or inadvertently) produces a direct effect on how the horse can and will work with you to play for you.
Photography courtesy of Rege Ludwig
Joystick Think of your body (head to toe) as a Joystick similar in effect to the way you would use a joystick to control a car on a screen. For example, if you want the car to go forward you would move the joystick forward and down. If you want the car to go
Joystick
46
Polo Times, February 2022
right, you would move the joystick right and down. Similarly, on your horse’s back you should move your body in the same manner to control the horse’s movement. For example, leaning your upper body forward and down will cause the horse to move its body weight and balance point forward and down. At the same time your rein hand will be moving forward and down, which is releasing pressure on the horse’s mouth, and is indicating to the horse, accelerate. At the same time that your upper body is moving forward and down, your lower legs, should move back and up along the horse’s sides to counterbalance your upper body moving forward and down. With your lower legs moving back and up, that is another indication to the horse, accelerate. If you want the horse to move right, you should lean your upper body right, which should cause your rein hand to move the same direction, at the same time, and to the same degree. Additionally, when leaning your upper body right, your right upper leg is pushing down on the horse’s right shoulder, while your left leg is lifting the left shoulder of the horse. Those two manoeuvres will be causing the horse’s body to be tipping somewhat in the direction you are leaning. Those movements of your body represent the Joystick effect of asking the horse to move right. Child on Shoulders The child on shoulders analogy is to draw attention to the fact that your body on top of the horse will produce the same effect on the horse as a child carried on your shoulders produces on you. For instance, if the child were to lean right, you would be caused to move laterally right; if the child were to lean forward, you would be caused to move forward at a somewhat faster pace; if the child were to lean back, the carrier would be caused to slow down to the degree that the child is leaning back. Basically, what I am referring to is the balance relationship between you, the rider, and the horse, the carrier. As your balance moves on the horse’s back, the horse is almost forced to shift its balance and body weight correspondingly, and move in the direction you are leaning, and move with the same degree of intensity to which your
Change direction laterally

Accelerate
www.polotimes.co.uk
Playing Tips joystick upper body is leaning, i.e., the Child on Shoulders analogy. Along that line of thinking, if your upper body weight and balance are shifting forward and down, because of your upper body leaning forward and down, your upper legs are being pushed forward and down into the horse’s shoulders to the degree that you are leaning forward and down. That, in turn, is shifting the horse’s point of balance forward and down to the same degree, which is indicating to the horse, accelerate at this rate. Contrastingly, if you were to lean your upper body weight and balance back and up from the forward and down accelerate position; you are effectively lifting the horse’s front end with your upper legs, while pushing the horse’s hind quarters down from your weight and balance having shifted back and down toward the horse’s hind quarters. Another indication to the horse, decelerate. What I would like for you to take away from this article is, the horse is carrying you on its back, and because of that, how you move on the horse’s back leaves the horse with little choice as to how it can and will work with you, to play the game for you. My suggestion is, if you are not getting what you want from the horse; the first question to ask is, “What moves am I making on the horse’s back, that would make it respond this way?” The second question
Knowledge
is, how much time and effort it will take from you and the horse to figure out how the two of you can work most effectively together. When you have attended to those three riding issues, there is little doubt in my mind that you will be playing every horse you will ever play with a much greater degree of effectiveness; as long as you are truly helping the horse work most effectively for you. When you know how to help the polo horse play with maximum effectiveness, you are reaping the benefits of what the polo horse has to offer you.
Decelerate
should be, “How is the way I am making those moves affecting the horse’s ability to work with me and play the game for me?”. The third thing to get an understanding of

Newish Year Resolutions
How to start and finish the year!?
I understand that New Year’s resolutions are now over, but it would be ok/good to start something new now… Newish year resolutions are much more effective, you’re back in the grind, slogging it out in the trenches and more likely be making sober statements to yourself and others about what you will achieve this year. Photography courtesy of Jason Warren
10 potential reasons & solutions to why you aren’t sticking to your new year resolutions…
Jason enjoying Jordan Peterson’s 12 Rules for Life
January is the time a lot of people have ideas to make change or achieve goals. But by now in February some time, when this issue has been released, most of those actions and ideas will have waned into non-existence. Not to say this has happened to everyone, but how often do we see it?! Whether it’s dry January, starting exercise, starting a business, going up a handicap, getting up earlier, whatever it is, when the January motivation starts to fade, what are we left with? Maybe an underlying feeling of guilt, a development of excuses, or a realisation of how it’s maybe harder than you first thought.
Find someone to compete with or someone to be accountable to
48
Polo Times, February 2022
Problem 1: You’re in the wrong environment Solution: Create an environment that supports your ambitions. Problem 2: You haven’t done it enough to create a habit Solution: If you start something new it needs to be done regularly and enough times for it to stick, some say 60 days. So, start something that you can do regularly and then stick at it until it becomes a habit. Problem 3: You’re making it hard for yourself Solution: Make it as easy as possible to do. If you want to eat healthily, only have good food in the house. If you want to get up earlier go to bed earlier. Problem 4: You haven’t put enough thought into why are doing it Solution: Don’t rush the decision to commit to something or get pushed into it. Consider the reasons you want to do something. How will it change your life for the better and is that important to you? If it’s important to you, there is more chance you’ll stick to it and be willing to commit. Problem 5: Things get in the way Solution: Before you start, identify the barriers, so you can plan to avoid or manage them. If you really want to achieve a new habit, you’ll do what’s necessary to avoid obstacles. Problem 6: You went in too hard Solution: Small actions over a long period of time create change. Make it as easy as possible, create small habits over time that are achievable and that lead to something great. For example, run for 100m every day for a week, then 400m everyday for a week, then a mile etc. Make it easy to start with and build slowly.
February is a great time to make newish resolutions
Problem 7: You’re not seeing any progression Solution: The habit should create progress, for example if you plan to lose weight by eating better, plan the week of food/exercise and understand how you will achieve the goal. If you can’t see progression or it doesn’t give you some reward, then the motivation to continue will drop off. Problem 8: It’s too uncomfortable, most things require an element of discomfort or hardship Solution: Embrace the discomfort and know it’s part of the process. Problem 9: You didn’t know what you were shooting for Solution: Set a goal so you understand what you are heading towards. Problem 10: You have no-one to share the trials and tribulations with Solution: Find someone to compete with or someone to be accountable to.
Conclusion
Now is a good time to make a small change that will have big benefits over time. Daily habits are what make up the big changes. Consideration of what you change, how you will do it and what the barriers are all important things to consider. Contact Jason on tolaperfomance@gmail.com www.tolaperformance.com

Members’ Festive Lunch & Lights Members of the Club enjoyed a delightful Mosimann’s prepared Christmas Lunch, complete with carols from the choir of the Royal Chapel and all topped off with an exclusive visit to the Windsor Great Park Illuminated, which saw Windsor Great Park come alive with stunning projections, dancing stars and dazzling lights for the festive season. It is hard to believe another season has come to an end! Photography by ©www.imagesofpolo

Inspired Arena Polo Masters Final; The All England Polo Club, Hickstead; Sunday 9 January
Rain, Sun & Sunday Roasts! The first day of the weekend, Saturday 8 January, saw biblical rains dampen the arena ground but not the spirits of the players and supporters, with revelry continuing late into the night. A return of the better weather the following day helped clear foggy heads and spectators enjoyed a fast-flowing Subsidiary Final followed by an exciting Final, all while bathed in glorious winter sunshine, a welcome sight after what was reported as one of the dullest Decembers on record, with just 26.6 hours of sunshine for the whole month. The whole weekend was rounded off with a Sunday roast in the Clubhouse – not a bad start to the New Year! Photography by ©www.imagesofpolo Lucy & John Bunn

Robert Strom is a familiar face on the European circuit, having won The French Open, Paris Open, Trophée Bourbon and Trophée Guerrand Hermès in France; The Gold and Bronze Cups in Sotogrande, Spain; The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz in Switzerland and further afield achievements include The Copa Presidente and Copa Sojo in Argentina and The World Polo League in America! What is your biggest passion and why? That’s an easy one, I have to go with polo obviously. It’s all I have known since I was a kid, my grandfather played, my father played, it runs in my blood. What is your all-time best polo memory? I had the chance to play with my father for a long time, and we won the last tournament in which he could participate, The Sotogrande Gold Cup in 2020. We won the Final in over time, it was a very special moment this will always be one of my greatest memories on a polo field
Hardest opponent? Playing The French Open against Barto or Jeta Castagnola, that was pretty tough to say the least!
Most prized possession? Apart from horses, the first car I bought, a 1991, black, Jaguar XJS.
Which sports do you like outside of polo? I must say I have grown pretty fond of Padel tennis lately, it’s very addictive. Otherwise, alpine skiing and wakeboarding are two sports that I enjoy a lot.
Favourite celebrity and why? Mick Jagger, complete legend. Best holiday destination & activity? St. Moritz! Or any Italian island during summer. Favourite film and why? Tough to choose just one but probably The Goodfellas, I’m a big fan of DeNiro and Scorsese
Who were/are your favourite teammates? My father will always be the best teammate I ever had. I also have the chance to play with my brother-in-law Clemente Zavaleta, he’s a very good player and we get along very well. Also, lately I played The French Open with two very good friends, Jaime Serra and Pacho Jaipur and that was a lot of fun.

Favourite song/album? Favourite song would be The Gun by Lou Reed and favourite album would be L.A Woman by The Doors. Favourite food/dish? Can’t hide that I’m a big pasta lover, in any form but al dente. Favourite hobby outside of polo? I love the sea, and spending part of the summer in the Mediterranean Sea, jumping off cliffs, snorkelling, spear fishing, wakeboarding… I spent a big part of my life there and it always feels amazing to connect with the sea.
Best pony and why? STM Black, she’s a beautiful black mare that came from our breeding and was trained at home. She turned out to be the best horse I ever played. She has won many BPP prizes and quite some notoriety on the polo fields. Are you passionately superstitious? Not really, I’m more religious when it comes to that. I just believe in coming well prepared to the game. Describe yourself in three words… Resilient, trustworthy & Rock’n’Roll One thing which would surprise us about you? I can’t ride a motorbike and I enjoy 19th century poetry. www.polotimes.co.uk
Dreaming of Argentina? Come to Sotogrande, it’s closer.
365 days of polo a year. Live the endless summer at Polo Valley and play on our new full-size field.
