Italy & Spain Qualify for FIP

In the absence of England, this year’s FIP World Championship opened up to new nations with the European Playoffs held at Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly. The results saw Spain maintain an undefeated record and Italy only losing one match, seeing both teams qualifying for The FIP World Championship.

As this June issue of Polo Times arrives on doormats, it is with immense admiration – not to mention a degree of awe – that we are all about to embark on celebrations and festivities to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. 70 years in any role is simply staggering and it is hard to find words to describe the wonderment to salute and acknowledge that HM The Queen has been our country’s Head of State for seven decades – ‘nothing short of miraculous’, perhaps best sums things up. Throughout this time, Her Majesty has, of course, been a staunch supporter of British polo – initially through her husband, HRH Prince Philip when he began playing polo in the 50s when the newly-weds were first based in Malta; then through her eldest HRH Prince Charles who followed his father’s love of the sport winning most major tournaments and finally watching her grandsons, Princes William and Harry, who not only continued the Windsor family’s competitive streak, but also its unstinting commitment to raise monies for charitable causes. The latter is of course, what polo does so well and so very sadly, this issue includes the obituary of a dear family friend – Major Christopher Hanbury – it is telling of Christopher and of polo, that his two stand-out loves were: supporting charitable causes and watching his family play polo. Combine the two and Christopher was in his element! I first met Christopher almost 40-years-ago, and I can safely say, there are very few who can claim to have contributed so very much to polo in modern times. Christopher will be sorely missed and polo, whilst a better place for his support, all the sadder for his passing. As you read this issue, I hope you will agree that it is great to witness polo – both on and off the field – being so enjoyed, free from the straight-jacket COVID restrictions of the last two years. However, do also spare a thought, for our European cousins who, three months on, are stoically defending our freedom. That the agressors must be vanquished is a certainty – at what cost, is the unknown.

Obituary Christopher Osgood Philip Hanbury 16 February 1944 – 10 May 2022

Photograph by ©www.imagesofpolo.com

Christopher was born on 16th February 1944 in County Meath, Ireland, where he was brought up by his mother and was a regular on the Ballymacad hunting field. Schooled at Wellesley House followed by Millfield (there he became great friends with Clare Tomlinson, a friendship that lasted all their lives) where he played county hockey and boxed for the school! Cirencester Agricultural College was his next stop where his love of polo began. In 1965 Christopher joined The Queen’s Royal Irish Hussars. During his time with the QRIH he was posted in 1974 to Brunei as ADC to His Majesty The Sultan of Brunei, this was a journey that lasted nearly 50 years – during his primitive years in the Far East His Majesty asked him to set up a Polo Club, which he duly did with the help of Jack Williams and their Argentine friends. Jerudong Park was formed and the rest is history. Returning to the UK in 1983 Christopher threw himself in to Cirencester Park Polo Club, becoming the chairman in 1995. He also created Longdole Polo Club with the help of Rob Cudmore where he encouraged and gave the opportunity to the young to start their polo careers. The Longdole and Lovelocks Polo teams won most of the Cirencester trophies, the ones he missed out on his sons Charlie and George picked up with him supporting on the side lines. The Lovelocks and Longdole teams travelled the country picking up their trophies with an assortment of players including his now son-in-law Will Lucas. During his Chairmanship, Christopher was instrumental in bringing the va-va-voom to Cirencester Park Polo Club by organising His Majesty The Sultan to play against and with His Royal Highness Prince Charles – during these games they raised millions for various charities. In 2003 buying several fields outside Lobos and turning them into the most amazing Polo Farm, El Remanso was born – a wonderful home and polo holiday destination. The Lovelocks Polo Stud was born here too, and to this day mounts some of the

10

world’s best players. Christopher’s happiest days in polo were spent watching his children and grandchildren play. Some of their successes include: every level of the Pony Club with children and grandchildren, The Warwickshire Cup, which George won three times (!), The Queen’s Cup, won by Charlie with Apes Hill, as well as the all-English El Remanso team winning The Gold Cup in 2018. In 2005 he took over as Chairman of the Hurlingham Polo Association and his main focus for his four years was on improving and expanding the professional umpiring and on the development of young English players who were finding it increasingly difficult to get into a high goal team. During his chairmanship, lifetime achievement awards were introduced and tests were carried out on polo helmets, the first step towards the introduction of the rule governing their standard which was introduced 10 years later. He also organised an exhibition of polo art in St James’ Palace and took great pleasure in sending Christmas cards to some 500 members each year, many of which included much more than just his signature as it was particularly important to him that those who contributed to polo were recognised and thanked. Christopher has always loved his racing and with Bridget has had many a winner between here and Ireland, hopefully his racing stud in Ireland, Triermore will continue to breed winners! Cheltenham Festival was his favourite, with many a winner and entertaining many a friend with his generosity! Christopher leaves a huge hole in the equine world, whether it’s racing or polo. He leaves behind his adored wife of 52 years, Bridget, six children: Zahra, Emma, Arabella, Jessica, Charlie and George, their other halves and his 21 grandchildren. A true legend and a gentleman. Major Christopher Hanbury’s Memorial Service will be held on Friday 10 June at St Michael and All Angel’s Church, Lambourn. If you would like to attend, then please email (hanbury@lovelockshouse.com) so the family can have an idea of numbers.

Hi Editor, Readers of Polo Times might be interested in the attached photo from London Illustrated News in 1936, of the Beaufort Polo Club that contains eight players from USA, two from Australia and remainder British – quite comfortably making for three 32 goal teams: Five x 10 goals, four x 9 goals, one x 8 goals and three x 7 goals. Dear Polo Times and all contributors I am writing to you as I have thought over the years how beneficial it would be to condense a year’s worth of your editorial into one book. My name is Charlotte Christodoulou and I have been playing polo for almost 18 years. During this time I have accumulated multiple copies of your fabulous magazine. This got me thinking… In December of each year, you could put together for example “The Knowledge” pages that are so informative and helpful. They cover horse welfare and player welfare which are so relevant and useful. That way there could be an annual manual that could be beneficial to all who subscribe. A Christmas Special that helps us mere mortals navigate the wonderful, challenging and mystical world of polo. Best Wishes Charlotte Christodoulou

A Gallop Through History performance was a highlight of the event, which although sadly did not w XXXXXXXXXXXX include any polo, did include an equine demonstration from Azerbaijan Land of Fire, who have dazzled spectators at The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz in the past. w Photograph by @www.imagesofpolo.com

Action from The Polo Pony Class

Windsor Horse Show Polo Pony Class 2022 Polo players enjoyed their annual chance to showcase their skills to a wider equestrian audience on 12 May at the historic Royal Windsor Horse Show, which has run since 1943. The Polo Pony Sponsored by Guards Polo Club show class is unique in the UK and the showground boasted record visitor numbers this year, many of whom crowded around the Frogmore Arena to enjoy watching players demonstrate the skills of some truly stunning ponies.

Just three of the 15 competitors had been entered for the ROR section. Siri Evjemo-Nysveen was invited to give the first individual show, on last year’s Supreme Champion Riba Roja. The lovely tenyear-old bay mare once again produced an elegant, controlled performance under the guidance of the Vikings patron and the spectators showed their appreciation. Harold Hodges was next to give a oneminute show, riding his own six-year-old mare, Plum Duff. The 3 goaler provided a dynamic show, despite the younger mare finding her surroundings slightly disconcerting. Last of the ROR contenders was Lingfield Lass, a 9-year-old, owned and ridden by Georgina Armitage. Based at White Waltham Polo Club and rated 0, Georgina showed her mare ably, prompting a spectator to later conclude that the amateur women players rode far better than the amateur men! Two of the amateur male players were asked to give the first show for the next section of the class. Trooper Conor Beules of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment rode the immaculately turned-out chestnut gelding, Champion, to considerable applause. Champion is owned by his commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Armitage, Commanding Officer of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment. Lt-Colonel Armitage himself was next into the ring and gave a neat demonstration on Stiletto. The 14-year-old mare is owned

Sadly, polo did not merit inclusion in the evening equestrian extravaganzas celebrating HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. A Gallop Through History included appearances from many of the royal family’s own horses, making polo a notable omission, particularly since polo demonstration games were included in previous years’ evening programmes at the show. This year, a total of 15 ponies were entered and the class as usual was split into ROR contenders and purpose-bred polo ponies. Judging duties once again fell to Lord Charles Beresford, a former 7 goal player and nephew of the late Lord Patrick Beresford, himself a many times winner and later judge of the class. Guards Polo Club Director of Polo Antony Fanshawe shared the judging role and has been the class’s chief promoter in recent years. They were accompanied into the ring by Sarah Gracey, proprietor of local saddlery The Millwheel 18

Tack Shop & GG Feeds, who both sponsor and judge an annual prize for the best turned out entrant. Following the customary scramble to find missing kneepads and mallets, since full polo attire is mandatory on this occasion, all the competitors made it into the ring. The presence of a good number of very senior players and uber talented ‘pilots’ from high goal caused a last-minute degree of panic from the amateur riders, but all in the end conquered their nerves and all performed well. The greatest improvement to this year’s class was the addition of a knowledgeable and enthusiastic commentator, Major Jamie Heywood, himself a veteran competitor at the event. This year, the audience were told who was in the ring and their relevance in the world of polo which enhanced the nonpolo spectators’ enjoyment to a great degree. www.polotimes.co.uk

The pros came out in force towards the end of the class, as 6 goaler César Crespo powered around the ring on Green Gates patron Noor Khadra’s Maestra. The compact bay mare attracted a lot of attention as César showed her off superbly. Guri Araucaria, another horse owned by Siri EvjemoNysveen came out next and the onlookers learned that they were watching another top player riding her; Ignacio Pieres. The striking grey acquitted herself impressively and her turn out also drew the admiration of judge Sarah Gracey. Machitos Yoko was shown next: a pretty chestnut mare owned by Siri Evjemo Nysveen. Machitos Yoko was in the highlyskilled hands of Jaime Roberts, who rode successfully in the class last year and knew exactly what was required for the occasion. Vet and amateur 3 goaler Harold Hodges was last into the ring, on another younger horse. His own six-year-old Narnia gave a good demonstration of her prowess under his sensitive handling.

Having allotted a mark out of ten to each of the 12 ponies and found that they had several ties, the judges elected to ride four ponies in order to determine final placings. Antony Fanshawe climbed aboard Guri Araucaria, Maestra, Machitos Yoko and Pony Lucky and trialled them with his customary ability. This also gave the spectators the chance to see that polo ponies are less one-man horses than many other performance horses. Finally, the judges made their selection and Riba Roja was once again placed first in the ROR category. Georgina Armitage’s Lingfield Lady was second with Plum Duff third. In the other side of the class, Noor Khadra’s Maestra, ridden by Cesar Crespo, took first place. Machitos Yoko and Jaime Roberts were second, Pony Lucky and Simon Franc third. Fourth prize went to Guri Araucaria and Ignacio Pieres, fifth to Pony Piggy and Tincho Merlos and sixth to Cometa and Maryam Sherozia. by his wife, Georgina, who had already shown her skills in the ROR class. Several spectators commented how nice it was to see military players entering the class once again, after a dearth of them for in recent years. Nick Johnson and Alan Kent’s Runway Bay followed Lt-Colonel Armitage and upped the ante considerably. Nick and Alan have both been stalwart supporters of the Polo Pony Sponsored by Guards Polo Club show class in recent years and have also enjoyed considerable success in it. As in previous years, the combination of a talented professional rider and a well-bred and well-schooled horse impressed all onlookers. Nick put far more speed into his show than the previous competitors and used more of the ring, letting everyone on the side lines have a good look at the mare and concluding with a dramatic stop just a foot in front of the judges. Nicola Davidson was next to ride and brought in her own grey Argentine mare, Lolita. The mare belied her 20 years and looked brisk and handy in the ring under the able guidance of 0 goaler Nicola. Showjumper Maryam Sherozia followed, on Clive Reid’s rock-solid old bay gelding, Cometa. Despite having admitted that she had never actually played polo but enjoyed stick and balling, Maryam showed the well-made gelding off nicely and caught the judges’ eyes. Agustin ‘Tincho’ Merlos then came out on Simon Franc’s lovely bay mare, Pony Piggy. The mare was bred by Tincho, who explained before the class that her interesting name was due to her “being a chanchita” to break in. Commentator Major Heywood informed the crowd that one of the world’s highest ranked players was now riding in front of them and they sat up and took notice. Simon Franc himself next set out his show, on another Merlos homebred, Pony Lucky. The eight-year-old chestnut mare was very eye catching. Simon was succeeded by Jemima Wilson, on her own Purito, a very nice 15-year-old gelding who looked to be in great condition. The classical Thoroughbred seemed utterly unfazed by either the heat or the crowds and was ‘chill’ to the nth degree.

two sections of the class, and Maestra was awarded the Challenge Trophy and Machitos Yoko the Reserve Challenge Cup. Sarah Gracey chose Jemima Wilson and Purito as recipients of her Best Turned Out prize, which comprised a £100 voucher from the Millwheel Tack Shop & GG Feeds. Guards Polo Club Chairman Brian Stein presented the prizes to the winners of the two sections and remarked that he had enjoyed seeing “some really lovely horses” in this year’s class. Brian continued “It was pleasing to see that the number of entries was only slightly lower than the last class

held pre-Covid. As a Club, we will seek to publicise the class even further next year, specifically to our own Members and make sure that entry details do not get buried in all the other membership paperwork and entry forms that they receive.” “Overall, the ponies and riders were of a great standard this year,” said Lord Charles

Beresford. “We just need to increase the number of ROR entrants next year.” Having placed sixth on her first outing, Maryam Sherozia vowed to return next year having “really enjoyed” herself. “It’s so lovely to come and ride at the Royal Windsor Horse Show on a beautiful summer’s day,” remarked Clive Reid. “But it is very tough to have to ride against polo’s top professional players. What we need is the inclusion of an Amateur Cup within the Polo Pony Sponsored by Guards showing class. I and my team, AFB, would be delighted to sponsor an Amateur Cup for next year’s show,” Clive concluded.

Introducing the emblem

The emblem design for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is based on an original illustration drawn by Edward Roberts, a 19-year-old student at the University of Leeds. Young creatives were challenged to sum up The Queen’s 70-year reign with their artistic skills. Edwards's simple platinum line design reflects The Queen’s continuous service and was selected by a judging panel of industry experts. The emblem features a purple and platinum design. The continuous platinum line reveals a stylised St Edward’s Crown, incorporating the number 70, on a round purple background associated with royalty and signifying a royal seal. The elegant font Perpetua, meaning forever, is an acknowledgement to the first British Monarch ever to mark 70 years on the throne.

Beach Polo World Cup

he Beach Polo World Cup was created in 2005 by Reto Gaudenzi, widely regarded at The Godfather of Snow Polo after founding The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz in 1985, hosting the event at South Beach until 2008. A decade later, Gaudenzi’s son, Tito Gaudenzi, resurrected the event in 2018 alongside World Polo League co-founder, Melissa Ganzi. The Ganzi link continues with the family’s Wellington based, Grand Champions Polo Club as the host polo club for the Beach Polo World Cup and the World Polo League is the event’s title sponsor. The 2022 event saw record crowds converge

at Collins Park by the 22nd Street beach entrance to watch some of the best players compete for the title, while enjoying extra features such as The Polo Lounge, VIP Experience, Retail Village and Après Polo. Eight teams competed over three days, with an undefeated Casablanca facing Richard Mille in the Final. The teams knew each other well, having competed against each other in the 2021 St. Regis World Snow Polo Championship, Roldan commented, “We knew Richard Mille was going to be tough, we played them before in the Snow Polo Finals. We just moved the ball, the footing was a little sticky in the end. All in all, it was amazing. It was such a good tournament, very

competitive, probably one of the best beach polo tournaments we’ve had”. Richard Mille began the Final with a half goal handicap advantage, but it was Casablanca who secured the first goal of the game, leading 4-1½ at the end of the first chukka, with Nic Roldan managing to escape injury after a tumble from his horse, “I got a little bit too far out of the saddle and the horse kind of stopped on me, I went over and the horse stepped on my ribs. I’m fine, I’ll survive”. Despite the epic horsepower of Richard Mille’s Pablo MacDonough, the team struggled to come back after their early losses and Casablanca ran out the winners 11-7½. The Casablanca Trophy for third and fourth place saw The Setai defeat Land Rover, 9-7½, with Alejandro Novillo Astrada named Most Valuable Player and Picara, owned and played by Melissa Ganzi, the Best Playing Pony.

he sun shone down on The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club on Saturday 14 May for The Justerini & Brooks Prince of Wales Trophy Final between Twelve Oaks and Great Oaks Les Lions. Although no strangers to the British polo circuit having often competed in the medium goal, but this year is the team’s first foray into the high goal, as Joaquin Pittaluga explained, “We have been talking about this for two or three years, we have been putting in effort for that time to get him [Charlie Wooldridge] better mounted and focused, which is not easy, and we finally made the decision last year and we gave it a go. with John Paul last year and really enjoyed it, so we put him [John Paul Clarkin] in the team and then Magoo [Laprida] is like a brother to me who hasn’t been playing in England and if we are going to take this challenge then he was the number one guy I wanted beside us and he has been awesome”. Meanwhile, Great Oaks Les Lions are no strangers to the high goal circuit, having reached The Cartier Queen’s Cup Semi Finals in 2019, in 2020 the team won both The Cartier Queen’s Cup and The Gold Cup while reaching The Prince of Wales Trophy Final and in 2021 they reached the Gold Cup Semi Finals, so this year they were keen to build upon earlier successes and add to the trophy cabinet. The first two chukkas saw Great Oaks Les Lions dominate, taking an early lead which they maintained until the fourth chukka when Twelve Oaks began to assert their dominance.

By the sixth chukka the scores were tied at 9-9, which pushed the match into an extra chukka, much to the excitement of the onlooking crowd who needed no excuse to prolong their sidelines enjoyment. Three and a half minutes into over-time, a 60-yard penalty was awarded to Twelve Oaks which Joaquín Pittaluga converted to take the title for Twelve Oaks and with it their first high goal title – an impressive accomplishment considering this is Twelve Oaks’ debut British high goal season. Charlie Wooldrige was unsurprisingly thrilled with his team’s debut high goal success, “It is amazing, especially at The Berkshire, Jamie is a really good friend of mine and it is incredible to come here and win one of the top tournaments. Joaquin and I have been talking about it for a while, but the timing hasn’t been quite right and we haven’t quite been ready, he has had a lot on, and this year we just decided let’s do it and see where we end up so glad we did! We are all good friends and going out there to have fun.”

“We focused on it not being complicated, having fun and we just got better and better doing that and it paid off” Joaquin Pittaluga

n impressive 20 teams entered this year’s La Martina Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother’s Centenary Trophy, the Club’s tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, which is a competitive 15 goal early in the season. With such a large field to compete against, reaching the Final was a battle in itself, with Romilla Arber’s Four Quarters Black facing defending champions, Spencer McCarthy’s Emlor. Four Quarters Black put up a strong fight, making Emlor work hard in the drizzly conditions. When Benjamin Urquiza fired through the equaliser in the fourth chukka nobody off the field of play was disappointed that such an exciting game was heading towards extra time and although both sides did have further chances in the fourth to close this match all sent their chances wide. Max Charlton, later named Most Valuable Player, sent through the golden goal in the fifth chukka, ensuring Spencer McCarthy headed home with the trophy for the third successive year.

Arber family affair in Subsidiary Final

he Valerie Halford Memorial Trophy is played at Coworth Park, a country house hotel just minutes from Guards Polo Club, providing a stunning setting for players and guests alike, in memory of Valerie Halford – a passionate polo photographer and writer who promoted the sport to a wider audience. This year saw a total of 10 teams competing in two leagues over 10 days of tournament action, with Alan Fall’s Mad

Dogs and Maximilian Kirchhoff ’s Snakebite facing each other in the Final. Following four chukkas of fast-paced, 12 goal action, Alan Fall’s Mad Dogs kicked off their 2022 season with a 9-5 win, which was swiftly followed by a win in Guards Polo Club’s Spring Tournament 24 hours later when they teamed up with Heiko Voelker in their Tchogan Dogs team. Sophie was the Images of Polo Best Playing Pony and Will Emerson was chosen as the Most Valuable Player.

With 10 strong teams entered in the competition, it was no surprise that the Subsidiary Final was competitive, despite being between two family teams – Simon Arber’s Four Quarters Orange vs Romilla Arber’s Four Quarters Black. In the end it was Romilla’s team who came out on top with a narrow 4-3½ win.

T

he Trippetts Challenge, played for the James Wentworth Stanley Cup, is Cowdray Park Polo Club’s opening high goal tournament of the season and provides a warm-up for the high goal teams competing in later 22 goal tournaments. Four local teams competed in the week-long tournament, with Alejandro Aznar’s Marques de Riscal meeting Corinne Ricard’s Murus Sanctus in the Final. Neither team were put off by the drizzle and fought fiercely across the five chukkas. Murus Sanctus’ Alfredo Cappella was the first to score and by the end of the first chukka they had pulled ahead, 4-2, with the ball remaining in the Murus Sanctus defending half for the first half of the second chukka, but by the end of the second chukka Marques de Riscal had clawed back some of the deficit and were trailing by just one goal, 5-4. Murus Sanctus hit their sweet spot in the third chukka, with two

converted penalties in their favour and no response from the Marques de Riscal ranks. Sapo Caset flew out of the starting blocks after half-time, but the ball fell wide and possession switched back and forth; another converted penalty by Araya increased Murus Sanctus’ lead to five goals and Marques de Riscal were running out of time to get back in the game. Caset made several determined runs to goal, but, by the end of the fourth chukka Murus Sanctus held a 10-6 lead. Caset broke through the Murus Sanctus defence at the start of the fifth chukka to score the seventeenth goal of the match, followed by an impressive run to goal from Alejandro Aznar, which took Marques de Riscal within a two goal striking distance of Murus Sanctus. Fouling once again played against Marques de Riscal, with Araya successfully converting the opportunity from the 30 yard line, yet Caset wasn’t giving up without a fight and scored twice more, bringing the scores breath-takingly close at 11-10 with just once chukka remaining. Marques de Riscal continued to find their way through the Murus Sanctus defence as Murus Sanctus also began to tire on the attack during the fifth and final chukka, which saw the men in maroon turn the tide and take the lead, with a foul from Cappella giving Caset the perfect opportunity to extend their lead; as the clock ticked down, Murus Sanctus were unable to find a sufficient response and Marques de Riscal ran out the winners, 14-11.

Black Bears Polo Club – The Oxfordshire Cup Final – Sunday 15 May Number of teams: Four Winners: Black Bears Points: 15 The Final and Subsidiary Final of The Oxfordshire Cup took place on a glorious day of sunshine bathing the grounds of Lower Bolney Farm Faced with the prospect of a very strong Emlor team that was so successful against them last year, Black Bears knew they would have to dig deep to get an early advantage. Jimbo

Fewster got them off to a flying start with a rapid goal, followed by a converted penalty from Paco O’Dwyer, but Max Charlton and Hugo Taylor quickly rallied and the first chukka ended two goals apiece. This was followed by two goals by Michel del Carril with Guy Schwarzenbach scoring a decisive goal in the third to ensure that Black Bears were five ahead at the end of the chukka. The second half got underway and spectators were treated to a further great display of competitive polo with both teams making the most of the opportunity to go end to end on a field that really lends itself to fast, running polo. www.polotimes.co.uk

The fourth chukka saw the game continue to favour Black Bears, with Schwarzenbach scoring a couple of goals alongside del Carril to counter the earlier one from Charlton, and Black Bears looked to have a comfortable lead of five goals going into the last. However, inspired by Spencer McCarthy who earned the title of Most Valuable Player as a result, Emlor staged a powerful comeback with Alejandro Muzzio scoring three alongside McCarthy’s cracking effort. Unfortunately, time was just against them and in the end Black Bears won 8-7. The Subsidiary Final was won by Perfect Moment, who defeated White Crane 9-6, with Max Gottschalk chosen as the Most Valuable Player and Florence, owned by Whithorn Estate and played by Andrew Blake Thomas was BPP. IMPROVING POLO SKILLS by Rege Ludwig

Unfortunately, there has been little written on the subjects of how to teach the game of polo and/or how to play it. My soon to be released educational program entitled, Improving Polo Skills, deals with both topics. My major focus is on the riding, the controlling and the playing of the polo horse. I discuss how you do each affects the way you execute the strategy of the game, and hit the ball. Over many years of working in polo, I have heard again and again that the polo horse is at least seventy percent of a player’s ability to play the game of polo. If that is true, as I am sure it is, then it only makes sense that if you want to improve your polo playing skills, the obvious place to start is where the largest percentage of your playing ability lies, i.e., riding, controlling, and playing the horse. In the book, Improving Polo Skills, Book One, Riding, I go into great detail explaining “WHY” the Polo Style of Riding is so important to playing the game of polo. I then go into the “HOW TO” of riding in the Polo Style. In the book, Improving Polo Skills, Book Two, Hitting, I go into an in-depth discussion on why a strong, secure and stable hitting platform is crucial to hitting any of the eight shots used in polo. Additionally, I introduce my Hitting Checklist, which is a series of steps that Half Seat must be executed in sequential order if efficient hitting of any of the eight shots used in polo is to be realized. I refer to that sequential order as, The Law of Sequence. I also go into how the ending of one shot feeds into the beginning of the shot used for hitting in the opposite direction on the same Begin Offside Fore Shot to End Offside Fore Shot/Begin Offside Backshot side. In the book, Improving Polo Skills, Book Three, Strategy, I discuss what the line of the ball and the right of way are. I reference each in a manner that defines how each should be used if maximum safety and effectiveness of play are to be realized. I also discuss, from an offense and a defense perspective, what the responsibilities are for each of the four positions in the outdoor game and the three positions of the indoor game. I also break the width of the field down into three sections that extend the length of the field. The middle section is an 80-yard-wide area where the offensive #1 and defensive #4, while staying on a direct line between the ball and the goal, should play the majority of the game. The two 50-yard-wide sections, on either side of the field, are areas where the #2s and #3s should play a large portion of the game. For more information go to RegePolo.com

Q&A Summer Feeding Questions Lorna Edgar answers your nutrition queries

Q: I have a horse that is beginning to lack stamina as the season progresses, what should I do? A: Following on from the previous question, stamina is NOT going to be rectified by the addition of oats or a Polo Mix as they are high in starch so provide ‘quick release energy’ which is pretty much accountable only for the first half of the chukka. For stamina we need to focus on a couple of other things as well… • Is the horse on a balanced diet for the amount of polo it is playing? This is always key to any diet but can make a huge difference to performance. • How much forage is the horse eating? If it is picking and not wanting to eat much it will affect energy levels as fibre contributes towards stamina.

60

Polo Times, June 2022

Is the horse drinking enough? This needs special consideration when travelling a lot and in the warm weather. Once addressing the questions above, stamina can be increased by… • Adding oil into the diet – using an oil supplement that contains antioxidants is ideal, such as Baileys Outshine or Saracen Equi-Jewel. You can add this to the existing balanced diet using ‘cups’ rather than scoops, for example I would normally suggest using 450g per day and this can be built on if necessary. A ‘glug’ of oil will not contribute to energy levels to increase stamina – but will assist coat shine! Using over 100ml of straight oil, such as soya oil, per day would also then require the addition of antioxidants (in order to help improve utilisation by the horse). • Administering electrolytes (eg. Baileys Aqua-Aide) within a two hour window BEFORE playing can help to reduce the onset of fatigue by up to 22.5%! My go to suggestion here is to use half a scoop of chaff with a scoop of water or a sloppy beet pulp to put the electrolytes in, an hour before they play, or as you arrive at polo. • Allowing access to pick at hay/haylage on the way to and from polo in the lorry. Try these small changes, and I am sure you will find your horse has more stamina! Q: Can I feed electrolytes everyday? A: You can, but they are not necessary. When the weather is consistently (!) hot then yes, electrolytes every day is ideal, but not when the horse is not sweating – they will excrete what they do not utilise. It would be an idea to add table salt to the feed every day or provide a salt lick in the feed bowl or in the stable for them to have free access to.

Photograph by Lorna Flemming & Jo Radford-Smith

Q: My horses have started the season on a low starch feed, should I be switching to a Polo Mix? A: Well, if your horses are going well on a low starch mix and they have enough energy, you don’t have to switch to a higher starch feed, such as a Polo Mix or Conditioning Mix. I discourage ‘blanket feeding’, where all horses are fed the same diet, it really must be done on an individual basis – some need more energy, some need more calories, some don’t need any energy, and some don’t need any calories. One feed does not fit all! Really think how your horses are feeling at the beginning of the chukka and at the end – is their diet supporting their workload? The majority of polo ponies work hard, and I feel it is often underestimated how hard they do work! Ensuring the diet is balanced to support their work is essential in maintaining energy levels, muscle integrity and body condition. Don’t be afraid to get in touch with a feed company or nutritionist to ensure you are ‘crossing the T’s and dotting the I’s’, it will make a difference!

Administering electrolytes at the lorry using a large syringe with a lot of water

Q: My horse has dropped some top line, should I use a muscle supplement? A: No, I wouldn’t reach straight for a supplement, you need to see if the diet is balanced first. Start with assessing the quality of the forage – is it soft, coarse, clean, dusty, good quality? Are they eating enough of it? If they are picking at the forage or the quality is not great, then I would be wanting to pick up the digestible fibre in the diet by adding an alfalfa chaff, freeze dried grass or beet pulp (Fibre-Beet) to the ration to counteract for the deficiencies in the forage. Alternatively, increase the amount of forage you are feeding them, or if they are playing a lot of polo and travelling a lot, ensure forage is available in the lorry to reduce time away from it in the stable/field. Is the hind gut working effectively – take note of the droppings, are they looking normal? Is the horse tucked up and hollow

in the flanks? Perhaps a course of pre/ probiotics would be preferable to assist in aiding fibre digestion in the hind gut. Products such as Protexin Quick Fix, Science Supplements Gut Balancer or Baileys Digest Plus, for example, can all help. Then I would look at the hard feed – ensuring it is a balanced ration to support the workload, as I have mentioned above. If you are worried about too many calories being provided, then top up with a balancer as this will provide quality protein to aid muscle development. And, finally I would talk to your physiotherapist or vet to see if there is any reason for muscle atrophy or soreness etc to ensure the horse is using itself correctly to build muscle in the right places. So many things to think of before spending out on a supplement! Q: Do I need to add chaff to the feed? A: No, you don’t! I have some clients that always use a chaff, some use a beet pulp in the hard feed and some use none, and that is fine, it works for their horses and yard set up. Generally, if the forage is good quality there should be no need to add additional chaff to the feed, unless you have a particularly greedy individual or a horse that is susceptible to choke. It really is a personal preference. I try to discourage over feeding in a meal and often adding chaff and beet can cause meals to become too large. Focus on the mix/cubes in the feed bowl, and where possible adding a separate feed of beet or alfalfa to increase digestible fibre in the diet where necessary if an induvial is not thriving or not eating enough forage. If your feed buckets are not too full, you could add half a scoop of chaff or soaked beet, but always bearing in mind the size of the horse’s stomach – as I mentioned in the April article!

Q: I have seen people feeding alfalfa before they play, is this ok? A: Oh yes, this is a great practise, and I will always encourage it! The thought process behind this is that the alfalfa chaff works as a ‘mat’ on the gastric acid produced in the stomach when fed approximately 30 minutes before they play, reducing the sloshing effect of the acid as the horse gallops. The added benefit of the alfalfa is it has a buffering capacity to the gastric acid from its calcium content. Some people will also take this opportunity to add water to the chaff and add electrolytes to aid hydration and reduce fatigue, as I mentioned earlier. Q: Is it true I should feed oats to my horses? A: As I have mentioned earlier, it is not a necessity, and they don’t suit all horses.

What I try to be mindful of is oats are not a complete feed – they are deficient in many minerals and quality protein, and if the energy is not used in their work, they will store it as fat! The longer I have worked in polo the less need there is for oats with most horses, but traditionally oats are used a lot in polo. I don’t feel they are needed for all horses – again, it comes back to ‘blanket feeding’ rather than feeding the individual. The mistake that is often made is that oats are overused, the diet becomes unbalanced from the nutritional deficiencies in the oats. So, what needs to be done is the deficiencies need to be counteracted for – adding a balancer to the diet to ensure the horse can actually metabolise the energy from the oats, with an increase in vitamins and minerals, and provide the quality protein that the oats are also deficient in. I would encourage you to speak to a feed company or nutritionist to ensure the diet is balanced instead of just adding scoops of oats into the feed hoping it will provide more energy, it is not as simple as that, the essential words ‘BALANCED DIET’ need to be considered first!

Oats don’t suit all horses, so consider alternatives as well

Unstable or Painful Shoulder in trouble

To make the ball fly across the polo field, a perfect swing is needed. A free range of motion in the shoulder is a prerequisite to correctly start this biomechanically demanding move. Additionally, the combination of full abduction and full external rotation and the weight of the polo stick pose a critical risk for strain injuries. Marginal limitations can already have a massive impact on technique and play strength. Secondly, the shoulder is a weak point when a fall happens and the energy is absorbed by the upper extremity. Most players also suffer from previous, partiallyrecovered, injuries where a painful snapping can really get in the way.

Anatomy

The shoulder joint (glenohumeral joint) is a ball and socket joint between the scapula and the humerus. It is the major joint

MRI with labrum lesion

62

Polo Times, June 2022

connecting the upper limb to the trunk. It is one of the most mobile joints in the human body, at the cost of joint stability. Comprising numerous ligamentous and muscular structures, composed of the clavicle, scapula, humerus and sternum, and an intricately designed combination of four joints, the Glenohumeral (GH) Joint, the Acromioclavicular (AC) Joint and the Sternoclavicular (SC) Joint, and a “floating joint”, known as the Scapulothoracic (ST) joint. The shoulder allows for a large range of motion due to the spheroid shape of the glenohumeral joint but this (i.e. a large ball in a small socket) renders it prone to dislocation and other injuries.

Common Shoulder Injuries/ Pathologies

Shoulder dislocation: The humerus or one of the other bones in the shoulder slips out of position. Raising the arm causes pain

and a ‘popping’ sensation if the shoulder is dislocated. Labral tear: An accident or overuse can cause a tear in the labrum, the cuff of cartilage that overlies the head of the humerus. Most labral tears heal without requiring surgery. Pulley lesion / biceps instability: Mostly snapping in the shoulder and painful combinations of abduction and rotation as well as pulling against resistance can be an indicator for a pathology of the biceps tendon. An unstable tendon is a constant problem under load bearing during sport and will usually not improve under conservative therapy. Rotator cuff tear: A tear in one of the muscles or tendons surrounding the top of the humerus. A rotator cuff tear may be a sudden injury or result from steady overuse. Shoulder impingement: The acromion (edge of the scapula) presses on the rotator cuff as the arm is lifted. If inflammation or an injury in the rotator cuff is present, this impingement causes pain. Shoulder tendonitis: Inflammation of one of the tendons in the shoulder’s rotator cuff. Shoulder bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa, the small sac of fluid that rests over the rotator cuff tendons. Pain with overhead activities or pressure on the upper, outer arm are symptoms.

Due to the fact that after your polo career you still need to move your arm above the horizontal during daily living, it is crucial to keep your shoulder in good shape and functional. Injury prevention is key and should have a central role in the routine during exercise off the field and when warming up pre-game. Stretching and range of motion movements are important to prevent early retirement from the sport. Playing Tips

Playing tips with Rege Ludwig Follow Horse’s Body Movement Renowned polo coach, Rege Ludwig gives his expert advice on how to get more out of your game

The significance of the follow concept is that as the horse’s is moving, i.e. walking, cantering, or galloping, and its front feet are moving forward and down to contact the ground, its head is moving forward and 64

The polo horse is asked to execute four distinct manoeuveres within playing the game of polo. Two of the manoeuveres are obvious because they are the exact opposite of each other, accelerate and decelerate. The third manoeuvre, changing direction, is obvious because it typically involves the two opposites of decelerate and accelerate; as well as, you are going in a different direction; which, is easy to identify and adjust for. The fourth manoeuvre, collection, is by far the most used manoeuvre. That is true because collection is used in conjunction with accelerate, decelerate, and change direction. Collecting the horse is the process of shortening the horse’s body and stride for the purpose of supporting the horse to help it become and stay balanced and energised with the appropriate degree of intensity, that is equal to the manoeuvre being asked of the horse. Three critical factors of the collection manoeuvre are: 1. Your lower legs must be back far enough to where they are contacting the horse’s sides sufficiently to energise the hindquarters to push the back legs forward and under the horse’s body. When that has happened, the horse will have the balance and energy to execute whatever the next manoeuvre might be. And, do it with the appropriate degree of power. 2. You must establish and maintain contact with the horse’s mouth to the degree of supporting the horse’s front end consistent with the degree of power with which the horse is being asked perform the manoeuvre. Within that process, you are helping the horse compress, or collect, its body and stride for the purpose of building the energy and the power with which to execute the manoeuvre being asked of it. 3. Within my style of teaching the riding aspect of playing polo, I teach a concept I refer to as, Follow the Horse’s Natural Body Movements.

Follow Horse’s Head Movement

down at the same time, consistent with the degree to which the feet are moving. Under those conditions your rein hand should be following the horse’s head, i.e. its mouth, forward and down consistent with the degree its head is moving. At a walk your rein hand could be moving up to two inches forward and back, as the horse’s head is moving to that degree. At a canter your rein hand could be moving up to four inches forward and back with the horse’s head movement. At a full fledge run, the horse’s head, i.e. its mouth, could be moving up to six inches forward and back. To maintain a supportive pressure on the horse’s mouth that is consistent with the speed the horse is travelling, your rein hand should move forward and back that same approximate distance; and, with the same approximate degree of intensity that the horse’s head is moving. Under those conditions, your rein hand is moving consistent with the movement of the horse’s head. I promise; if you are to play your best game of polo, you almost have to be working with your polo playing partner, the horse. Think about it, if your rein hand is not

moving forward and down with the horse’s natural head movement, then as the horse is moving its head forward and down, consistent with its feet movement, the horse’s mouth is being bumped into by an unforgiving rein hand. At that rate, the horse cannot help but be somewhat confused to the point of wondering, “Do you want SLOW, or do you want GO”? I fully realise that following the horse’s natural body movement is taking improvement to the next level. However, I assure you, if improving is an objective for you, then learning to help the horse play better for you can be an absolutely crucial part of your improving. In one of my earlier seasons in Wellington, Florida I was watching eight goal player Dale Smicklas practicing penalties. He had the horse moving at such a slow and collected pace, that I was confused by his doing it. It was not until I had taken lessons in dressage riding that I figured out why he had the horse moving at such a collected and slow pace. First of all, by having the horse’s body and stride shortened, or collected to that degree, he could feel the horse’s stride to www.polotimes.co.uk

Playing Tips the point of developing a sense as to when to initiate the swing to hit the ball at the appropriate spot within the arch of the swing. Secondly, Dale was building energy within the horse’s stride to where he could hit the ball harder using the horse’s energy, instead of having to develop his own power to a greater degree. The fact of the matter is, the greater the degree to which you generate your own power, the more detrimental it is to hitting the ball accurately for the purpose intended, which, in this case was to hit the penalty shot. I remember my hitting a penalty three on field two at the Retama Polo club in San Antonio, Texas. I hit the ball so correctly that when I Iooked up, I saw the best shot I had ever hit. That shot was so effortless that I was not aware that the mallet head had contacted the ball. I promise, it was not power that produced that hit. It was more a matter of timing in association with using the collected power of the horse’s body and stride. After I saw the effect of my shot, my mind went immediately to Dale Smicklas in Wellington, Florida. Dale rode his horse to the ball at such a collected and slow pace that the timing as to when to initiate the swing must have felt so obvious.

Hitting Spot

Relative to timing the shot, I reference my main resource book, Observations Upon The Nature Of The Gallop And The Timing Of A Polo Stroke And Form In Striking, written by seven goal player, Dr. John D. Richards in 1939. I abbreviate what Dr. Richards

suggests in that book, the ideal spot for contacting the ball when hitting an offside fore shot is when the horse’s right front foot is opposite the ball, with the right front leg being straight, and in full vertical support of the horse’s body weight.

Chukka Wellness ‘How To’ Tutorials Perfect Plank & Back Extension Core stability is key to maintaining balance in the saddle during each shot and ride-off. As well as protecting riders from back pain, a strong core contributes to correct posture and better cues to the horse for overall performance between horse and rider. Two very simple but effective core exercises are the well-known plank and the back extension. These compound exercises

work the trunk in different ways; the plank relies heavily upon the anterior chain muscles and the back extension requires the posterior chain. Together they help stabilise the whole trunk and prepare the rider for action! Although these exercises are simple, many people perform the movements incorrectly which can lead to body

imbalances and potentially an injury. English 4 goaler Tommy Severn has kindly demonstrated the dos and don’ts of each exercise. Tommy has just finished playing with the Tchogan/Polo Performance team in the Valerie Halford 12 Goal Tournament and the Queen Mother’s Centenary 15 goal Tournament with Sujan Polo Team.

The Perfect Plank

The plank is the ultimate core exercise; not only are you improving core strength but activating all parts of the body.

Photography by Chukka Wellness

Don’ts 1. Hips too high – this puts too much pressure on the front of the shoulder and prevents the core muscles from working correctly 2. Hips too low puts too much pressure on the lower back and prevents the core from engaging correctly. 3. Feet too close together – this can cause the collapsing of the hips to one side and result in falling over! 4. Planking with the elbows in front of the shoulders can put unnecessary stress through the shoulder and elbow joints Don’t put your hips too high in the plank position

Dos 1. Fully extend the legs and lengthen through the torso (imagine someone is pulling the crown of your head away from you) 2. Hips in line with your shoulders 3. Shoulders sit directly over the elbows 4. Feet hip width apart 5. Pelvic tilt to protect the lower back and correctly engage the core muscles. Side Note To make the plank a more effective exercise try 60 seconds of diaphragm breathing beforehand. Challenge: How long can you plank for? Matt Kenna is a fully qualified veterinary and sports chiropractor working with elite athletes and their horses. He is currently working providing consultancy to premiership football teams, high goal players and treats horses across all levels of polo from low goal to high goal. Based between Guards and Cowdray, he travels all over the south of England.

We all see it. The sun comes out, it warms up and our mares start squealing, humping, trying to kick each other and go through all the emotions under the sun in a ten-minute window. They prance about with tails in the air and our polo ponies become dressage horses. We are talking about them coming into season. Many women I see in my human clinic experience tightening and an increase in back pain during their menstrual cycle. Why? Nerves send information from the brain to the body along the spine via the spinal cord. The ovaries are located near the lower back, within the pelvis. The nerves that send information to the ovaries travel down the spine to the lumbar spine (lower back) and then exit the spine, as spinal nerves, to go to the ovaries. Nerves also feedback from the ovaries which is how our body knows what’s going on, it provides the information that controls all the functions, much like an engine management

system in your car. During a women’s cycle, these nerves become overly excited and send this information back to the brain. Where these nerves enter the spine in the lower back they also excite other nerves in that area. Because these other nerves innervate and control the surrounding muscles, skin, bones and nearby organs, these subsequently become excited too, which leads to contraction, especially the muscles. The same thing happens in our horses, so with the vast majority of polo ponies being mares, that puts a huge proportion of horses playing polo in a position where this may be possible. They will experience attitude and behavioural changes, but the thing that gets reported to me the most and the reason for most of my visits, is a decrease in performance. Engaging their rear ends, in some horses will be difficult, they will find turning one way easier and they may not stop as easily as it involves a lot of lumbar flexion

and pelvic engagement. Lumbar pain, muscle tightness, reduced power from behind, tense quarter muscles, canter problems, issues with circle work on one rein and a sharp character along with many other signs could indicate ovarian/ uterine problems. To the frustration of many owners, some mares also appear to be constantly in season. The behaviour changes may be due to completely normal physiological events related to the mare’s oestrus cycle or may be a sign of a more serious problem. Over the last few decades, many authors have related ovarian dysfunction to personality problems in the equine. Ovarian tumours, cysts and granulomas were thought to contribute to hypersensitivity and aggression. After these issues were corrected, behaviour improved as their cycles normalised, so the behaviours were thought to be merely hormone-related. Chronic pain is now being

There Is No Such Thing as Talent…

Photograph by Emily Gordon

Jason has a Performance Coaching business in which he works with professionals to help and support them throughout the season and year. He helps them maintain a good headspace and works on their personal development on and off the field. He also manages and plays for Oriflamme polo team

Natural ability vs effort and practice

The word talent can be unhelpful and limiting

If you start to overemphasise talent, that could debilitate you as an athlete. If you say, ‘he is very talented’ firstly you take away the work that person may have put in (which you probably don’t know much about), secondly you take away your own belief in your potential i.e ‘if he’s talented, I’m not’. If you look at someone like Jonny Wilkinson, many will say he was a talented rugby player, which I’m sure as a youngster he was, but from that moment he had a very disciplined and driven mindset to become better. When he drop-kicked the World Cup winner in 2003, was that based on his talent or the work he put in up to that point? If youngsters or anyone believes overly in talent and see their peers as more or less 70

Polo Times, June 2022

Photograph by Mark Beaumont

The definition of talent is to have ‘natural aptitude or skill’. So, if you are to say someone is talented, you are making that conclusion based purely on their ‘natural’ ability over their practiced ability. If you look at a 28-year-old football player, there is no possible way you could say they are talented, unless you knew them at the age they started. The age they started would show their unaffected natural ability. If they’re a great footballer at 28, that will be a result of talent, practice, coaching and training, but to decipher which was more prominent would be impossible, unless you knew all the work they put in, or didn’t, but that would still involve some element of guesswork. If you look at two young children who both jump on a horse having never ridden or never held a polo stick and ask them both to stick and ball, you can to some degree assess their talent. There is a high chance one will be better than the other. Therefore, the child that is better, is more talented. If you see the two children ten years later playing polo, but you don’t have any knowledge about what they have been doing over the ten years, which child is now better? The talented one or the non-talented one?

Talent in polo is diluted by the vast additional resources needed to be good at polo

talented than them, this will automatically create less focus on coaching/ practice/ training, for both the talented and the untalented. The talented may fall into a feeling that they don’t need to work as hard as the others and the untalented will feel no matter how much practice they put in; they will not get as good as the talented.

Hamilton win the champion in a Volkswagen Polo? Of course he wouldn’t, this is an exaggeration of the point, but without the resource the initial talent isn’t realised. If he had a slightly worse car than Verstappen, he may seem a less ‘talented driver’ than Verstappen but in reality his talent or ability is hindered by the resource.

Is there talent in polo?

What’s the point of this article?

When looking at polo, talent becomes even more diluted because of the resources you need to be good at polo. Are Argentine polo players better than other nations because of talent or their resources? Clearly, it’s because of their resources, opportunities and culture, NOT talent. Of course, those top Argentine polo players are talented, but I’m sure in Finland or China there are some equally talented polo players that never get the opportunity to play polo, let alone the resources if they did start. When talking about resources we are talking about horses, practices, time playing, opportunity to play, money, coaching, culture and I’m sure many more. Another sport that is heavily based on resources is Formula 1, would Lewis

The less you believe in talent the more you allow yourself to find ways to get better. Rather than accepting others as more or less talented, instead you could ask the question, what did they do to get as good as they are? Or what can I do to get better? I think language overtime can be very powerful, if you start absorbing the language and ideas you are given that could dictate the actions you take. To become a good polo player, you need to put in the right work and find the right resources not worry about how talented you are. Contact Jason on tolaperfomance@gmail.com www.tolaperformance.com

Heralding from a polo background, it has been no surprise to see young British talent Josh Hyde taking the 2022 American season by storm, winning The C.V. Whitney Cup and reaching the USPA Gold Cup with Park Place. Josh has now returned to England for the high goal season where he will be playing alongside familiar teammates, Hilario Ulloa and Juan Britos for Park Place Vaara

What is your biggest passion and why? Polo is by far my biggest passion because of the lifestyle of being a polo player and the adrenaline you get out on the field.

Hardest opponent? I think I would have to say Facundo Pieres because of how well he’s mounted, he never misses the ball and can read the play like no other.

Favourite celebrity and why? My favourite celebrity is probably Ricky Gervais because how he speaks the truth about the world is so refreshing.

What is your all-time best polo memory? My best polo memory is winning The C.V. Whitney Cup in America and I’m sure I’ll never forget it. Photograph by David Lominska

Who were/are your favourite teammates? My favourite teammates to date are definitely Juano [Britos] and Hilario [Ulloa], I think together they have huge chemistry. I also enjoyed playing with Ryan Pemble because of how he made me understand the game and he taught me loads in a short amount of time.

Which sports do you like outside of polo? I really love football, our family are huge Chelsea supporters. I also used to play squash with my brothers and dad a lot.

Polo Times, June 2022

Best pony and why? The best pony overall would have to be a horse like Cuartetera, but my personal favourite was one owned by my brother named Sweet and Low, because she was such a strong brave horse.

Favourite film and why? My favourite film would have to be The Hangover because of the comedy. Favourite song/ album? My favourite song always changes, but right now it’s The Anthem by the Good Charlotte.

Are you passionately superstitious? I try not to be, but sometimes I will eat the same dinner and breakfast as I had before the previous game if we won.

Favourite food/dish? My favourite food is definitely my dad’s Sunday roast.

Describe yourself in three words… Adaptable, ambitious and motivated.

Most prized possession? I don’t have many important possessions, so probably my bank card! 80

Best holiday destination? The holiday destination for me would have to be going to Tokyo.

One thing which would surprise us about you? That I am madly obsessed with my brother’s dog Obi! www.polotimes.co.uk
