As we approach a new pool season, this is typically the calm before the storm for many in this line of work. I don’t know though, maybe it’s something in the air, because if this is the offseason, boy it sure doesn’t feel like it. Everywhere that I look people are going ahead, both guns blazing, preparing for what we’re all predicting will be another extremely busy summer. I for one am excited for what this year holds in store for our industry. On the heels of attending the most recent Pool Spa Patio Expo in Las Vegas, I had the opportunity to see some of the incredible new products and innovations that are sure to become popular this year with pool pros and consumers alike.

In our latest issue we feature some of those hot new products that you’re bound to see while attending this year’s trade shows. I particularly enjoy attending these events because it’s such a wonderful opportunity to connect with peers, network, and stay up to date with what’s going on in the pool world. It’s also a great chance to meet and learn from folks whose work you’ve always admired.

While I was in Las Vegas, I had the chance to interview Joan Roca, one of the most well-respected designers in the industry. His passion for the art of pool and outdoor living design is truly inspiring.

Spring is certainly a time of rebirth and embracing all that is new. It’s in that same spirit that we bring you a number of articles that you’ll surely find nowhere else, including our featured story with star of the hit TV series “Insane Pools”, Lucas Congdon.

A Look At The U.S. Navy’s INDOOR OCEAN

Pool Magazine takes an in-depth look at the 12 million gallon indoor ocean where the United States Navy tests it’s entire naval fleet.

One of the world’s largest wave pools sits at the United States Naval Surface Warfare Center. They use the facility to create waves of specific sizes, frequencies, and amplitudes. Since 1962, the US Navy has tested all of its ships, platforms, and moored systems in realistic sea conditions at the Indoor Ocean in NSWC Carderock.

Approximately 240′ x 360′, the enormous basin is 20 feet deep and holds 12 million gallons of water. In addition, it also once held the record for having the world’s largest dome.

Indoor Ocean Used To Predict Ship Performance

The Navy uses the facility to predict how their full-scale ships will perform in the open ocean by testing their stability and control in a vessel that simulates real-world wave conditions. The maneuvering and seakeeping basin, also nicknamed (MASK) is where the US Navy tests its fleet.

Built in 1962, and renovated in 2013, the Indoor Ocean received an upgrade from 21 slow and inefficient pneumatic domes to 216 paddles. Consequently, today, operators have better and

more independent control. With 99 percent precision, the results produced at the renovated facility provide far more realistic conditions than its predecessor.

Engineers at the facility evaluate operability, ship motions, and efficiency. MASK researchers can then use this information to fine-tune a new vessel’s design to maximize its chances of achieving the desired level of performance.

Testing also aids in establishing operational guidelines for the crew and ensuring the correct configuration of the ship.

“There are many different kinds of waves,” Calvin Krishen, NSWC engineer, said in a YouTube video uploaded by the Department of Defense. “Waves are different in different parts of the world and they are different depending if you are close to shore, or away from shore or whether you’re in a storm or not. We actually have the capability of programming all those different types of waves to test.”

Engineers perform rigorous tests and manufacture vessels to a smaller scale in order to see how they will perform out on the open ocean. Based on the analysis conducted at NSWC Carderock, ship designers can make necessary adjustments to improve performance in realworld conditions.

The machine that operates the wave pool consists of a paddle system that lines two walls of the pool. The system consists of 216 individual wavemakers capable of producing waves of varying sizes from -45 degrees to 135 degrees.

The paddle system is programmed for choreographed movement. It creates reproducible, perfect-sized, perfect-frequency waves. Force transducers create air bellows that go across the pool at specific angular motions. The motion is akin to fingers moving across the keys of a piano.

The old pneumatic-powered wave system used antiquated technology. The Navy requires a facility capable of performing the rigorous testing demanded by engineers. In the past, the testing team sometimes had to relocate their models to the actual ocean and study the weather in order to recreate the perfect wave conditions.

Does it shock and awe us that the United States military owns the best wave pool in the world? Not really. However, it does fill us with enormous pride to know that dedicated professionals perform the highest level of testing and analysis for the vessels that comprise our naval fleet.

The Surreal Pool Art OF ANIA AMADOR

These days, artists find inspiration working in a variety of different mediums. Take a stroll around town and you’re liable to stumble across art in the strangest of places. Case in point, the subject of today’s discussion. Ania Amador is an artist who has rapidly been building a following and has gone viral with her surrealistic swimming pool murals.

To appreciate her art does involve stepping out of your comfort zone. No, you won’t need a ticket to a gallery or museum. To view this art up close and personal, you’ll have to strap on your bathing suit or put on a pair of swim trunks.

A trained commercial artist, Amador gave us some insight as to how she first got started painting swimming pools.

“I’ve been doing this for about ten years - full time, but I’ve always been creative and liked painting. When it comes to my mural work, it’s really great to be able to diversify and paint in private homes,” explained Amador, “Pools seem to be pretty popular these days, and I’ve had a lot of fun the two times I’ve had the chance to paint a pool.”

What drew our eye to Amador’s work, is not only the vivid and surrealistic imagery she incorporates into her murals, but also her preferred canvas. A swimming pool seems to be the most unlikely place you’d find a detailed mural depicting an astronaut lost in space. However, it’s exactly that decision to apply this painting technique inside the pool that is turning heads.

“That was my first time ever painting on the ground or in an immersive surface like that, where it’s actually around you and trying to think about all the different angles and how most people would be experiencing the painting,” said Amador.

“There were a lot of unknowns with the space pool specifically, and I just went for it. I thought the astronaut would be a really good way to achieve a good perspective from either side of the pool, and that was the focal point,” explained Amador, “Then I was able to add a vortex and galaxy. The client had a couple of other specifics they also wanted to be thrown in there, but that’s usually how these concepts unfold. I meet with my clients, see what their overall vision is, and then I come up with my own spin on what that is.”

The project took Amador a while to complete and was well documented on social media while she was painting it, as are many of her other projects. In the course of painting the pool, she began to attract more and more followers. Consequently, she slowly began thinking of her next pool painting which would feature a surreal seascape theme.

“It’s funny because some of my most viral projects have been a swimming pool and then another huge ocean scene I did. I knew that this one was going to be a hit,” said Amador.

Her latest creation which depicts an underwater scene was documented in a time-lapse video of her painting the entire swimming pool over the course of ten days. As with the first, her second pool painting generated millions of views and shares.

Ania acknowledged that this type of artwork is temporary and degrades over time and her client who commissioned the work knew this as well. Due to the technique used and the harsh environment a swimming pool presents, the pool will need to be repainted eventually. The average lifespan of the paint her clients chose is only 3 to 5 years, according to Amador.

Not all art is made to be permanent. Ephemeral art is to be appreciated in the here and now. Although these murals are temporary, it’s easy to appreciate the beauty in Amador’s work.

When she’s not painting her latest pool masterpiece, you can find this professional artist painting at rock concerts in front of a live audience, working on a new commission, or teaching a workshop.

Million Dollar Pool Design WINNER

Pool Magazine is proud to have been one of the sponsors of this 2022’s Million Dollar Pool Design Challenge at the PSP Deck Expo in Las Vegas. The winning design was done by up-and-coming designer Rance Schindler who blew away the judges with his $10,000 winning entry, courtesy of Riverflow Pumps by Current Systems.

The annual competition is the brainchild of renowned designers Mike Farley and Reid Schindler, and it seeks to promote cutting-edge ideas for backyards by doing away with financial restraints.

Designers are invited to enter the competition and create the ultimate outdoor oasis for hypothetical clients on a million-dollar budget.

Entrants in the 2022 competition were tasked with creating an outdoor living oasis for a husband-and-wife pair of lawyers in Chicago, Illinois.

Designing the ultimate backyard for these dream clients meant planning a seasonal space that would prioritize health, wellness, and self-care.

A large number of entrants tried out for the Million Dollar

Pool Design Challenge, but only a select few were invited to show off their skills. PoolHaus’s Brent Dutton, Old State Landscape’s Whitney Morris and Stephanie Carnahan, Complete Exterior Solutions’ Rance Schindler, Randy Angell Designs’ Brad Holley, and AquaTerra Outdoors’ Minsung Kim, Karishma Karki, Paola Hidalgo, and Sameepa Modi were also finalists.

Some prerequisites for submissions were that the design should incorporate a few wish list items:

The Site

• Home has a lower terrace area, front approach, and rooftop terrace.

• Seasonal usage of space, designer should consider wind, sun direction, shade, and the Chicago climate.

• Clients goal for the space is a space to unwind.

Aesthetics & View

• Keep the view open if possible, but they also want privacy.

• Preferred to have natual elements, but they love structured design.

Pool & Spa

• The pool is for health, wellness, and self care.

• They are looking for a complete setting, not just a swimming pool.

• A hot tub and cold plunge are needed, possibly a sauna.

Elements To Include

• A fire element to gather around.

• Cool lighting.

• The use of a Riverflow Pumps by Current Systems product (lazy river or swim jet system).

• A real or synthetic lawn space.

• The use of Ledge Lounger furniture.

• An outdoor kitchen.

Other Considerations

• The couple will entertain/host six to 12 guests maximum.

1. Aesthetic Quality - Is the concept’s form pleasant to look at?

4. Realization PossibilityIs the concept buildable if the client decided to move forward with construction? ie. topographically, features, function

The design plan also features a lovely rooftop dining and conversation area as well as an outdoor kitchen.

Deckorators Releases 3D Software DECK DESIGNER

Deckorators, a leading manufacturer of outdoor living products, has recently launched a new deck designer software that allows users to quickly and easily design their dream deck.

With this cutting-edge tool, users can start designing their ideal deck within seconds. The software features a user-friendly interface that makes it easy for anyone to use, regardless of their design experience.

To get a better understanding of the full capabilities of the software, Pool Magazine spoke with Michelle Hendrick of UFP Industries and Jason Varney of Dock and Deck.

“It’s a consumer tool, but contractors can also utilize it as well to really plan out the project that they’re working on and work with a homeowner on ways to look at different colors and how that pairs well with the siding of

their house,” explained Michelle Hendrick.

One of the standout features of the Deckorators design software is the ability to choose from a wide range of customizable options.

Users can select from a variety of decking materials, including traditional wood and composite options, as well as different colors, styles, and patterns. They can also add railings, stairs, and other features to their design, allowing them to create a truly personalized outdoor space.

“ You can even pull in a photo of your home into the software as well,” explained Hendrick, this really gives you a good feel for what that deck could look like.” Hendrick claims the software gives users the “design flexibility to really look at different pairings and ways to really accentuate the backyard”.

“I think it is a tool that a contractor can use too,” said Varney, “DIYer’s will definitely use this to get a basis of an idea or a plan and almost kind of see where their cost price points are going to be before they contact a general contractor to come out and give them a full rendering.”

“It’s a great start of letting a customer kind of figure out where they want to start out price-wise and get a budget in mind of where they think they need to be as far as materials,” said Varney.

Glass Bottom Pool A FIRST FOR CANADA

While traveling to Canada I recently had the opportunity to check out the amazing swimming pool at ARC Vancouver. The ARC tower is a mixeduse building with residential units, commercial space, and amenities for residents.

The ARC is located in the Yaletown neighborhood of Vancouver, close to restaurants, shopping, and entertainment. The building has a sleek and modern design, with floor-to-ceiling windows and a striking curved glass facade. Suspended directly below a bridge in the middle of the building sits a glass bottom swimming pool offering breathtaking views of the city below.

Reminiscent of the Sky Pool in London, Canada’s 200-foot-high see-through indoor swimming pool sits 20 floors above street traffic. Measuring 38 feet across, the ARC’s pool is truly a sight to behold, with crystal clear water that allows swimmers to see straight through to the streets below. The floor of the pool is made entirely of transparent acrylic, giving the impression that swimmers are floating above the city.

The ARC’s glass-bottomed swiming pool is not only a stunning architectural feat, but it’s also a revolutionary concept in pool design. It’s the first of its kind in Canada and has rapidly become be a major draw for both tourists and locals alike.

Only three companies in the world have the technology to make the six-inch thick acrylic glass that covers the entire area of the pool’s floor and can support the weight of approximately 1,650 automobiles.

The tower’s pool is the showpiece, but the bright ‘Ode to Canada’ ceiling design is a nice touch as well. When night falls, the pool’s reflective ceiling turns its floor into a beacon for passersby below. Looking up at the masterpiece from below the pool’s depths reveals a smudge of beautiful and vivid colors.

Critics Say Piranha Pool Scene

TOO VIOLENT FOR TEENS

The new Netflix series Wednesday, based on the beloved Addams Family franchise, has been receiving a lot of buzz since its release. A pool scene featuring piranhas dropped into a swimming pool has folks talking. The supernatural comedy horror series, stars Jenna Ortega as the titular character. Catherine Zeta-Jones stars as Morticia and Luis Guzmán plays Gomez Addams.

For those unfamiliar with the Addams Family, the franchise originally began as a series of singlepanel cartoons by Charles Addams, which were published in The New Yorker in the 1930s and were revived again in the popular 60’s TV sitcom and series of films produced in the 90’s.

One of the standout moments in the new Netflix series features a scene in a famous swimming pool. After Pugsley (played by Isaac Ordonez) is harassed by school bullies, Wednesday opens the series by exacting her revenge as the boys practice water polo.

In the scene in question, she releases two bags full of piranhas. While the scene is certainly over-thetop and absurd, it is also a great example of the dark humor that the Addams Family is known for.

While we’re big fans of seeing pools in the movies and on television, this scene will reignite any irrational childhood fears you’ve ever had. Despite the fact that the act was in keeping with the Addams family’s style, some people believe the scene was too much, especially given that the show is aimed at a broad teen audience.

“I’d be ok with it being played for laughs or as a gratifying comeuppance for a bully if this whole thing wasn’t so one-sided. We know this wouldn’t fly if the genders were reversed, even more if the one getting revenge was a male character against a female one. I can think of very few productions where a male character brutalizes a female one as revenge for something she did,” Redditor Deadlocked02 said in regards to the violent scene.

Overall, the new series Wednesday is definitely a darker addition to the Addams Family franchise, but will surely be a hit with fans of the original series and films. The swimming pool scene with the piranhas is just one example of the bizarre and outrageous moments that have made the series popular. With that said, it still may be too violent for some younger teen viewers to watch without parental guidance, (Wednesday is rated 14+).

Foam Core Construction in THE POOL TRADE

Foam core construction is a relatively new technique in the world of swimming pool construction, but it is quickly gaining popularity due to its numerous benefits. This construction method involves using foam boards as the core material, which are then covered in a layer of concrete. The resulting pool is lightweight, energy efficient, and costeffective.

To get a better understanding of how foam core construction is being applied in the pool trade we consulted with Nathan Giffin. Giffin is an expert in the field and has been working with foam core construction for over a decade. He has taught countless

professionals and contractors on the technique and has helped bring it to the forefront of the industry.

One of the primary reasons Giffin is such a proponent of foam core construction is that it is incredibly durable and longlasting.

Giffin says that foam core provides a strong foundation for elements like rock waterfalls, slides, and grottos, and that concrete stone facing adds an extra layer of protection.

Consequently, he feels this makes foam core construction a wise investment for those looking to add a swimming pool to their property.

“The first mountain I ever built at a pool with my colleagues, we did steel rebar construction, which is your typical method. You’ll have a worker bend up all the steel, and then you’re welding it, and then you’re backing it and shooting it. By the time you’re all said and done, you’ve got six to eight inches thick of concrete,” explained Giffin.

“We had to dig about 18 caissons just to support the weight of 99 yards of concrete. We shot that for a waterfall that surrounded a pool slide. Six years ago, I did a slide of a similar size, and I used 60 billets of foam. For this project, we used less than twelve yards of concrete, and it’s just held up like a champ,” said Giffin.

Nathan Giffin explains how foam core construction has suddenly become more widely used in the swimming pool industry.

“For a medium-sized mountain, we can probably have the foam carved up in about a week. We’ll actually sculpt this stuff in warehouses and then have the client come out and actually walk on it,” explained Giffin.

“They’re completely bedazzled over the entire structure because it’s so large,” said Giffin who explained that once the client has had an opportunity to view the structure, it’s then scheduled for delivery.

“We put it in a truck, bring it out to the job site,” explained Giffin, “within day one, it’s delivered and glued together. Then all of our pipes are run and we’re structure coating it. That all happens on day one. The rest of the week, we’re just spraying the concrete on and finishing it. I’ve finished very large structures inside of a two-and-a-

half week time frame.”

That foam core pool construction is a unique and creative way to build large, complex structures with simple tools was the net-net we got from Nathan Giffin. By using hot wires on the foam structure, you can create intricate sculptures that are both beautiful and functional.

Despite its many benefits structural foam is still a relatively new technique, and some pool contractors may not be familiar with it. However, Nathan Giffin has been working hard to promote and teach the technique. Consequently, he’s been teaching pool builders how to build with structural foam.

This method of construction has been used in the past to create everything from bridges to theme park rides, but it’s also great for

creating custom pools. With a little bit of knowledge and some practice, pool pros can learn how to use this technique to create custom outdoor features.

It’s clear that foam core construction is a promising technique for swimming pool construction. It is energy efficient, cost-effective, and durable. With experts like Nathan Giffin leading the way, it is likely to become more popular in the future.

One on One With LUCAS CONGDON

Recently, Pool Magazine had the opportunity to chat with Lucas Congdon, owner and founder of Lucas Lagoons, a company that specializes in the design and construction of luxury pools and outdoor living spaces. Congdon is also known for his role as the star of the hit TV show Insane Pools, airing on Animal Planet, the DIY Network, and Discovery+.

Congdon started Lucas Lagoons in 2002, with the goal of creating one-of-a-kind outdoor living spaces for his clients. Over the years, the company has grown in size and reputation, with Congdon and his team designing and building some of the most extravagant and unique swimming pools and outdoor spaces in the country.

In 2015, Congdon was approached by the Animal Planet network about starring in a new TV show that would showcase his work at Lucas Lagoons. The show, titled “Insane Pools: Off The Deep End”, quickly became a hit.

Lucas Lagoons practically became a household name after the Insane Pools show aired on TV networks.

PM (Pool Magazine): Is it safe to say that Lucas Lagoons has become kind of a household name by now?

LC (Lucas Congdon): “Yeah, that’s how it feels. Wherever I go, there are always people excited to see me or sometimes I get, where do I know you from? And then I know right away, like. I don’t know them. They’re a fan of the show and it’s flattering. It’s pretty cool.”

“Sometimes it’s one of those awkward moments where you’re like running to catch a flight you’re late for and someone stops you. You don’t want to be rude, so you try to make the time. But yeah, it’s pretty cool to just be able to share my passion and have people recognize that. And it’s obviously really hard to kind of start a company and let people know what you’re about and Insane Pools

really helps show people what we’re about and that’s quality and fun and building one-of-a-kind pieces of art you can swim in.”

PM: Congratulations on some of your recent awards. We had a chance to check out some of these projects, and they’re really breathtaking.

LC: “Yeah, it’s hard to keep them all straight. I have a list of some of the most recent awards, but they’re all just so unique and different. And when I first started out, we took the time to submit for a lot of awards.”

“We won within the first couple of years almost 40 awards. Then I got so busy with the show, I didn’t submit Lucas Lagoons for awards for years. Just recently we’ve had some time to start submitting again and it was just awesome to get such great feedback from FSPA and then

we also won a Pinnacle Award. It’s just been awesome.”

“Each job is just so uniquely different. We’ve been doing some modern designs, just to show that we’re well rounded and getting awards for those as well. Lucas Lagoons isn’t a one-trick pony.”

LC: “We got really, really, lucky. We had our YouTube channel and people were finding us through that. Then we had, I guess for lack of better words, just kind of like a talent scout who was looking on YouTube for ideas for a new show and saw what we were doing. He made a sizzle reel and pitched it to a few different networks. The first round nothing happened. The second round was drawn out and was like this multi-year process. So it was really like gut wrenching. You think you’re going to have a show, then you don’t have a show. That kind of back and forth. After a while, I stopped telling people Lucas Lagoons was going to have a show because it was just taking so long, they thought I was just making it up.”

“I just figured I’d just put it out of my mind and whatever was meant to be, was meant to be. Luckily ‘Insane Pools’ all came together and it was definitely a much bigger and harder challenge to do the show than I ever thought it would be. In the end though, well worth it. It really got our name out there and we’re obviously very proud of the show and the pools we did. I can say one thing, it was

definitely a huge challenge to try to film the show and still be able to run a business at the same time. Yeah, lots of challenges.”

PM: Can you share that with us? What are some of the challenges of building a pool for a customer that’s going to be on a TV show?

LC: “Everyone thinks that just because you’re on TV, you’re just rich and made of money. That’s the thing with reality TV, they don’t pay you hardly anything because they know that it’s an opportunity for you. So you don’t really get paid much from the show. The clients know you’re going to get advertising for it, so they want a discount and they want something special. A lot of people have seen Extreme Home Makeover where they do things for free. There’s kind of that mentality that maybe they’ll get something for free if they reach out to the show.” ”The first season was really tough because they put low budgets on the pool. I built something worth five times what I was paid. That was season one, I think that was seven years ago now. Obviously with inflation things have gone up.

So people see that first season, they think for $150,000, I can build them the pool they saw on TV. Now, that’s our average design fee just to develop these types of massive projects we’re doing. So a lot has changed.”

PM: What’s been your favorite part about doing the show?

LC: “I think just being able to connect with so many people that I wouldn’t have connected with before the show, whether it’s homeowners or other people in the industry or kids that have been inspired to be creative and want to work with their hands. These days so many kids are just kind of stuck on devices and disconnected from this kind of hard work and art. So it’s been really cool. Kids have sent me videos of them building their own little ponds in the backyard, or making Lego pools or hand drawings of pools. Just so much fan mail. It’s really cool. I love that I’m inspiring the next generation to be creative and work hard, that’s really rewarding.”

Drought Has Pool Pros Looking FOR WAYS TO RECYCLE

As the drought continues to impact many areas of the nation, pool pros are looking for innovative new ways to recycle the backwash from filter cleanings.

The drought that has plagued many parts of the United States in recent years has been nothing short of disastrous. Record low levels of precipitation have led to widespread water shortages, with many states implementing mandatory water restrictions. The situation has been particularly dire in California, which recorded the driest 22-year period in at least 1,200 years, according to a new study.

Recent storms have added to the snowpack in the Sierras which supplies 30% of California’s water. Experts however say that it isn’t enough. While these storms have provided some relief, they are unlikely to have a significant impact on the megadrought that California has been experiencing.

For now, major cities like Los Angeles have managed to avoid instituting measures that would prevent homeowners from filling swimming pools. The problem does however make a good case for backwash recycling as it has a direct impact on water usage.

Study Shows Primary Culprits of Water Loss

A study conducted in 2010 by the California Urban Water Conservation Council looked at ways that water is lost in swimming pools. The study pointed out that the primary causes of water loss in pools are leaks, splash out, evaporation, disinfection, and filter operation.

The topic was certainly a hot-button issue at last

year’s Pool Industry Expo in Monterrey, CA. It’s also a reason why products like Best Clear System have suddenly become very relevant to the conversation about water conservation. The system promises to help homeowners save thousands of gallons of water while keeping their pool filters effortlessly clean and helping protect the environment

Recycling Backwash Saves Water

To get a better understanding of what the Best Clear System actually does, we spoke with industry veteran and CEO of Aquos Pools, Harold Tapley.

“In a nutshell, the Best Clear System actually clears the water so you don’t have to dump it on the ground and lose it,” said Tapley.

“When you’re discharging, be it backwashing or when you’re washing the cartridge out, you’re getting salts into our fresh water supply. It’s going into the ground or drain in the street and down to the creeks and streams,” explained Tapley, “that creates a conundrum for our industry because it’s almost like Vegas. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Well, what happens in the backyard sort of stays in the backyard because you can’t really see what’s going on. When you see that big white stain in the gutter from D.E. being discharged or somebody out there hosing a cartridge off in the gutter, that really brings it to your attention.”

“If you’re backwashing, the things that are in that backwash, besides salts and chlorine are metals. Typically it’s copper which is deadly to algae in a pool, of course, but when it enters our ecosystem, it creates a lot of problems,” said Tapley, “the discharge itself typically is just sediments of clay or sand, but it does have some stuff in it that’s not good for the environment.”

Pool Pros Put On Notice

Many pool professionals have already begun getting fined according to Tapley. “Here where I live in the Central Valley, the city has actually hired water patrol police. We need real police, but the water patrol, they’re out. There are huge stiff fines for wasting water and dumping it into storm drains. Improper disposal is costing service techs a ton of money when they don’t do things the right way. At P.I.E. I ran into several guys that told me that they had already been fined up to $1,000 for backwashing cartridges in the street,” said Tapley.

To put the numbers into the proper context, Tapley explained just how much water is used in backwashing filters each year. “A typical backwash for a sand filter is 200 to 250 gallons and it’s recommended to backwash them once a week,” explained Tapley, “that’s over 5,000 gallons a year of freshwater that you have to put back in the pool to replace it. Keep in mind that the skimmer starts grabbing air because the water level drops. So you got to double that. I mean, you’re really talking about 10,000 gallons per pool.”

“When you’re cleaning the filter and you dump a couple of hundred gallons of water onto the ground, you lose that pretreated water,” explained Tapley, “and when you’re putting the fresh water back in, then you got to go right back to your test kit and start readjusting the pool. The service guys realize that every time that they have to put more chlorine in because they just top the pool back up and give it a couple of hundred gallons of water. So that said, I feel like when we have pretreated water that we’re capturing and putting it right back in, that is a savings right there itself. If it is a saltwater pool, of course, then we’re saving the salt water.”

Shark Tank Swimming Pool Fire Hose A MISS WITH POOL PROS

The FireFighter1 swimming pool fire hose is a product that made its way onto the popular TV show Shark Tank, where entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to a panel of investors in hopes of securing a deal. The FireFighter1 swimming pool fire hose was a hit on the show and ended up winning over the Sharks, resulting in a successful investment. Whether or not the product will become a hit with consumers, however, remains to be seen.

About The FireFighter 1 Hose

The FireFighter1 system is ostensibly a fire hose designed for swimming pools. The average residential swimming pool has around 25,000 gallons of water and the FireFighter1 claims that it

can deploy more than a gallon of water per second, in a controlled spray that can reach up to 40 feet. The product claims to offer homeowners the ability to quickly extinguish small fires that may occur around the pool area. The kit comes with a hose available in 50 and 100-ft lengths as well a 3-way diverter.

One of the primary features touted in the pitch for the FireFighter1 System is its high-pressure nozzle. Manufacturers claim the nozzle is able to produce a powerful stream of water that can effectively extinguish small fires. The hose also comes with a built-in shut-off valve, allowing users to easily control the flow of water. Another key selling feature of the FireFighter1 swimming pool fire hose is its compact size. The hose

can be easily stored in a pool shed or other small space, making it readily available in the event of a fire.

On the surface, the system seems like a no-brainer for pool owners who live in areas prone to wildfires. So why are pool industry professionals saying that they’re ready to give this product a hard pass?

Experts Warn Against Using Your Pool To Put Out a Wildfire

Swimming pools and ponds are frequently utilized by fire departments. Typically helicopters are deployed to use the water to combat wildfires. One could argue, doesn’t a product like FireFighter1 make sense for consumers to have in their backyards?

Clearly, the product is targeting homeowners who live in rural areas with fewer available resources to respond to house fires and potential wildfires. This was the premise of the value proposition on Shark Tank. The product however is raising alarms both with pool industry professionals and fire safety experts who feel that the equipment being pitched to the public is inadequate in the face of realworld wildfires.

“I think it will sell. People will buy into it, especially in drought-stricken areas prone to fires. I do think it will work to a certain point if installed correctly - not as in the demo. It needs to be on the discharge of the pump. I don’t think most homeowners will know to change the suction to draw from the main drain versus the skimmer and they will run out of water. I do think it will provide a false sense of security and keep people from evacuating as early as they should. All in all, I’m not a fan.” - CPO Instructor, Host of Talking Pools Podcast, and Best-Selling Author, Rudy Stankowitz.

“There’s not enough water volume. We have a detail/spec for a fire department standpipe off of a dedicated pool main drain for firefighting. It’s a 6” main line to a 4” vertical pipe for a wharf hydrant. It’s a detail that we’ve had approved by the CDF, LA, Santa Barbara & Monterey County Fire Marshals,” Paolo Benedetti - Swimming Pool Expert Witness.

Did Shark Tank Take a Bite on The Wrong Product?

Wildfire prevention and mitigation expert, James Rappuhn feels this product may actually be dangerous in the long run. “I do not feel this is a good solution for homeowners. It creates a false sense of security (“I don’t need to perform necessary home hardening or clearance because I have this pool pump system”). Additionally, wildfires move faster than people know. They should be evacuating to safety not staying home and fighting a fire with inferior equipment. To me, this is a dangerous product. I base this on 20 years of wildfire experience.”

There are numerous threads on social media dedicated to whether or not this is a viable product for consumers. The general consensus among pool professionals and fire safety experts we spoke with is that consumers may have difficulty engaging the system in an emergency and that the flow rate may not be suited to the task of fighting an actual wildfire.

Bianca Wittenberg is the founder of FireFighter1 and current CEO and Lead Product Developer. On the surface, it does not appear that she has much pool or fire safety experience. She owns a residential real estate company called Own It Real Estate and is an operations manager and broker at IBMC Lending. Prior to starting FireFighter1, she owned a synthetic lawn and landscaping business.

Experts we spoke to would like to see more involvement from independent sources both in the pool industry as well as fire

safety to ascertain whether or not this product is actually a safer alternative to simply evacuating.

Shark Tank has a history of finding great new products, especially when it comes to pool-related items. One such product that was a big hit was Magic 5, which made a splash with its innovative custom-tailored swim goggles. Sometimes the sharks hit, and sometimes they miss. This certainly wouldn’t be the first fire safety product that went awry for the sharks. For now, however, it’s safe to say that FireFighter1 appears to be a big miss with pool pros.

In 2023, Online Retailers Are LEVELING THE PLAYING FIELD

The retail industry has faced numerous challenges in recent years, and 2023 is no exception. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the industry, with many retailers experiencing closures, reduced foot traffic, and decreased sales.

In addition to these challenges, retailers must also navigate an increasingly competitive landscape. Inflation has certainly made operating a traditional brick-and-mortar store a much more expensive proposition.

To get a better understanding of how online retailers are thriving in a changing economy we spoke with Frank Vitori, owner and co-founder of Aqua Blu Mosaics,

a leading eCommerce site in the pool & spa vertical.

“Aqua Blu was actually established back in 2013,” explained Vitori, “we started the company because we saw a giant void in the online world for distribution of swimming pool products. At that time, we actually just started out with the pool mosaics, the dolphins and turtles, the ornamental type stuff. Before we knew it, it started to catch. Over time, we started expanding categories and it quickly became known that glass tile was our core competency.”

Today Aqua Blu Mosaics has become a leading source for many products that pool professionals use on a daily basis. The website has been growing its inventory by rapidly adding new distributors.

The company is also on a mission to win hearts and minds within the industry itself, according to Vitori.

“We’re excited to say that we’ve experienced great growth since 2013,” said Vitori, “we put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into the company. I’m humbled when I say I feel that in the online world, Aqua Blu Mosaics has positioned itself as the go-to online distributor for all things pertaining to pool tile, accessories, and outdoor living furniture. Fast forward to 2023. I’m proud to say that Aqua Blu is becoming more of a household name. If you want to compare it to National Pool Tile or Noble Tile, Aquabella, or any of those firms I would say that Aqua Blu is right there with these brick-and-mortar distributors.”

Vitori attributes a big reason for growth to its internet and marketing strategy. Aqua Blu Mosaics ranks as one of the top websites in a search query for pool tile. The website dominates for many pool-related keywords on popular products they sell on their website.

“I want to say that glass tile is at least 40% of our sales. We really have become the go-to guys for all of the specialty products. I like to say that we have all the fun stuff. We’re a small group and very boutique in nature but offer unparalleled customer service,” said Vitori.

Victori credits engagement with pool professionals at numerous levels as another factor for growth and has been eager to expand Aqua Blu’s builder network. “We have a wholesale program that’s called our Aqua Pro Trade Network, where we offer extremely competitive rates to our pool builders, contractors, designers, and landscape architects,” explained Vitori.

The strategy is one that retailers like him are using to great success. Ecommerce sites like Aqua Blu Mosaics have been able to thrive in the face of a changing economy in a number of different ways. One key factor is their ability to reach a wider audience than traditional brick-and-mortar retailers. Online stores can sell to customers anywhere in the world, which has helped them to weather economic downturns and shifts in local consumer behavior.

Another advantage for online retailers is their ability to offer a more convenient shopping experience. Customers can shop from the comfort of their own homes, at any time of day, and have their purchases delivered directly to their doorstep. Vitori says offering this type of convenience has helped online retailers like him to attract and retain customers, even during times of economic uncertainty.

Online retailers like Aqua Blu Mosaics have also been able to take advantage of advancements in technology that enable them to spot trends as they occur and increase profitability. One trend Vitori spotted early last year was an increase in the sale of artificial grass which he credits to the ongoing drought in many parts of the country. “It all makes logical sense, right? I mean, a lot of homeowners are trying to mitigate their water expenses. Some people also don’t like lawn maintenance,” said Vitori.

Pool Pros Struggling With NEW CAL-OSHA REGS

OSHA has a new life jacket regulation that California pool pros need to be aware of. As pool professionals in California continue to adapt to new safety regulations, one rule, in particular, has caused confusion and frustration: the requirement for pool cleaners to wear a life jacket while on the job.

The regulation, known as T8 CCR 3389, was implemented by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as a means of protecting workers from drowning hazards.

For many pool cleaners, the idea of wearing a life jacket while performing their duties seems unnecessary and cumbersome. After all, many would argue that they typically aren’t getting in the actual pool or engaging in activities that would normally warrant the use of a flotation device.

The CPSA had the following to say about the regulations, “We were recently called by one of our larger pool service members who brought to our attention a recent interaction they had with Cal-OSHA. This company was attempting to do the right thing by scheduling a review of their safety

practices to make sure they were doing everything correctly and to avoid any potential future audits and/or penalties. The pool service company confirmed that they provided goggles and gloves for their service personnel.”

OSHA insists that the life jacket rule is necessary to protect workers in the event of an unforeseen accident or emergency. For example, if a pool cleaner were to slip and fall into the water, the life jacket would provide them with the buoyancy needed to stay afloat until help arrives.

Others have pointed out that there are already a number of safety measures in place to protect pool cleaners, such as the use of safety ropes and harnesses, which should be sufficient to prevent accidents.

Despite these concerns, OSHA has made it clear that the life jacket rule is non-negotiable and must be followed. Pool professionals who fail to comply could face fines and other penalties.

If an employee is required to work in an area where they may be at risk of drowning, their employer is required to equip them with a personal flotation device that has been approved for use by the United States Coast Guard. That includes people who work in the pool industry, like pool techs, repair contractors, and maintenance workers.

As a result, many pool professionals have reluctantly accepted the rule and are doing their best to comply. However, the confusion and frustration surrounding T8 CCR 3389 remain, and it will likely take some time for California’s pool industry to fully adjust to this new safety regulation.

T8 CCR 3389 Life Vest CAL-OSHA Regulation

(a) Except as specified in subsection (a)(1) for marine terminal operations, at least one U.S. Coast Guard approved 30-inch life ring with not less than 90 feet of 600-pound capacity line attached shall be kept in a readily accessible place where employees’ work exposes them to the hazard of drowning or each employee so exposed shall wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD).

The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 was passed by Congress in order to provide safe and healthy working environments. Nonetheless, as advantageous and protective as it may sound, some business owners view the organization as a relatively unscrupulous government agency, particularly in the way it disseminates information to businesses impacted by changing regulations.

The best advice for the time being, invest in some life jackets, train your personnel, and avoid a possible fine by making sure your pool business is adhering to the letter of the law.

The Rise of pH

The term pH is a symbol for the power of hydrogen. Any chemical that contains hydrogen is considered an acid. There are weak acids and strong acids. Muriatic acid is also known as hydrochloric acid. Muriatic acid is made by taking hydrogen chloride and dissolving in water. This produces hydrochloric acid which is known as a strong acid because it has a high percentage of hydrogen.

The term “muriatic” means “pertaining to brine or salt” since it originates from the production of pure chlorine combined with hydrogen. When hydrogen chloride is dissolved in water you have hydrochloric acid. The main takeaway here is the presence of hydrogen. A high percentage of hydrogen ions in pool water will lead to a lower pH.

There are base or alkaline chemicals such as soda ash (sodium carbonate) or baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). These are salts that contain a higher percentage of hydroxyl ions over hydrogen and therefore will raise the pH. The formation of hydroxyl ions from the addition of soda ash leads to the consumption of hydrogen which drives the pH up.

The Unintended Side Effect of Modern Pools

Pools now are designed with waterfalls, fountains, negative edge, and raised hot tubs. The latest system designs include SWG saltwater generators, ozone, and AOP Advanced Oxidation Process. All of these new items offer a plethora of benefits from bettersanitized water to the peaceful ambiance of a backyard water oasis.

These new trends all have one thing in common. They create either aeration or turbulence of the water that leads to the increase of pH. Swimming pool water contains a collection of chemical species. Water balance species include carbonate ions (CO3-2), bicarbonate ions (HCO3-), carbonic acid (H2CO3) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Normally, all of these exist in equilibrium.

All of the devices named will cause the pH to rise. Here’s how; When air is forced into water it breaks the equilibrium of CO2 between the air and water. This is a violation of Henry’s Law which states that the amount of gas in a liquid is in proportion to that of the same gas at the surface. The first phase here is that aeration causes the water to off-gas CO2. This upsets the equilibrium of all the species and causes the consumption of hydrogen.

When hydrogen is consumed the pH goes up. Aeration and turbulence are present in ozonators from the bubbling of the O3 gas. In saltwater generators, chlorine gas is produced at the positive cell and sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas are made at the negative cell.

The bubbling from these gases is enough to cause turbulence and increase pH. Obviously, when waterfalls or fountains run continuously there is high aeration which leads to increased pH.

Raised hot tubs that spill over into the pool will increase pH due to the aeration from the jets and the turbulence of the overflow from the hot tub to the pool. High negative edge drops also create turbulence that increases pH.

Two Ways To Ease The Rise in pH

The ideal standards for pH are between 7.4 to 7.6. High pH can lead to:

• Lowered percentage of active killing agent from chlorine (with or without CYA)

• Scale formation

• Metals will stain at pH of 8 or above especially copper

• Cloudy water

• Reduced Oxidation Potential Reduction ORP

There are two very simple ways to reduce pH increase.

One: Keep the total alkalinity at a target between 7080 ppm. High total alkalinity can be lowered by 10 ppm using 25.6 fl.oz. of muriatic acid in 10,000 gallons of water.

Be sure to test and account for the cyanuric acid CYA that contributes to total alkalinity. If there is CYA present in the pool over 50 ppm 1/3 of the CYA reading must be subtracted from the total alkalinity test to get the correct carbonate alkalinity.

With the total alkalinity lowered by acid to between 7080 ppm the pH may decrease below 7.0. You can aerate by using the running waterfalls etc. in the system to raise the pH to 7.4-7.5 without having any effect on the total alkalinity.

The pH can be managed better at these levels and less acid will be needed to keep pH down. The LSI can be

helpful here as well. Where total alkalinity is kept is also based on the primary sanitizer used.

Trichlor is an acidic form of chlorine so it will lower both pH and total alkalinity. In this case the alkalinity can be maintained at 80-90 ppm. If using cal-hypo or liquid chlorine 60-70 ppm is preferred.

Two: Add borates to slow down the rise of pH. Adding borates at a level of 50 ppm will help considerably to slow the rise of the pH in pools with water features or devices that produce turbulence. Adding borates can help conserve the amount of muriatic acid needed to control a rising pH.

Everything related to water is about balance. Proper management of total alkalinity and the addition of borates can help to restore balance and slow down the rise of pH in pools with high aeration.

Important Take Aways When It Comes To pH - Ideal Range 7.4 to 7.6

• Keep the total alkalinity between 70-80 ppm.

• Test and account for CYA.

• Trichlor will lower both pH and total alkalinity.

• Add borates to slow rising pH.

It started with a phone call from the owner’s personal assistant. They had movable pool floors in the pool and spa that didn’t operate properly. They wondered if I’d fly up to Whitefish, MT, and have a look-see at their problems.

Upon my arrival, I was met with an odd home-brew moving floor system. In an attempt to reinvent the wheel, the pool builder tried to create his own moving floor systems. The premise was that ballast tanks would be filled with water to lower the floor and be filled with air to raise it. In theory, it may have worked, but

as with any unproved and untested design, there are always kinks. Testing theories on a wealthy client and working out the kinks on a multi-million dollar pool project, is never the place to learn.

To begin with, the structure was fabricated out of aluminum. Anyone who’s spent time around chlorinated swimming pools knows that aluminum rapidly decays in salt or chlorinated water. The ballast tanks did not have any bulkheads, so the water sloshed from end to end. This caused the floor to list to one side or end, binding it within the pool walls. You can imagine a multi-ton structure

wedged within the pool walls. The deck of the floors were finished in Ipe, a hard exotic hardwood. However, after submersion in water, the wood becomes gray, slimy, and slippery.

To make matters worse, the builder failed to recess the incandescent lights and wall fittings. So the shifting floor structure would sheer off the glass lenses and fittings. In a futile attempt to keep the multiton structure aligned, the builder cut guide tracks into the walls and installed roller wheels. The forces at play here grossly exceeded the bolt-on wheel assemblies.

The moving floor in the spa was another disaster. The mechanism was a scissors lift, driven by a hydraulic ram. The builder sourced his hydraulic ram from a local tractor supply store. Over a few quick months, the leaking ram created an oil slick atop the spa. Needless to say, the cast iron ram began to corrode within the chlorinated water.

Once I began to evaluate the hydraulics, electrical, and moving floor systems, it became apparent that the entire project would require a substantial renovation in order to be safe, functional, and code compliant.

I partnered with a local contractor, Shawn Hossack of Panorama Builders. Together we came up with a plan to remove the dangerous floor system and install a new fully proven and engineered system. Though we obtained bids from a number of manufacturers, we settled on systems from Hydrofloors - Twinscape Group. Their technical support and proven track record made the client’s choice simple.

The interior of the pool & spa was determined to be not completely plumb and true. The only means to correct these deviations would be to render them with mortar and tile them. First, the failing Eco-Finish would have to be removed from the walls, the walls roughened, and prepared for waterproofing

To get the exact contours from which Twinscape could begin fabrication, the crews at Panorama tiled the top 3 feet of the pool in order to generate a 3-D model of the interior.

Since the walls are supposed to be perfectly vertical, these 3 feet would be a representation of the entire pool depth. From this model, Twinscape was able to begin fabrication, while progress was being made on tiling the pool.

The spa wasn’t quite deep enough to accommodate a properly designed scissors lift. We remedied this by raising the spa walls 18 inches and replumbing the jets. Once the concrete had cured, the tiling of the spa began in parallel with the pool.

During demolition, we discovered many electrical and bonding

deficiencies. The incandescent lighting was converted to strip lights from Hydrolume and proper j-boxes and conduits were installed.

The hydraulics and mechanical systems were corrected to the best possible conditions. Some pumps were eliminated and their pipes repurposed in order to reduce the line velocities on the remaining pumps. Some drains were converted to returns and unblockable drains and sump were installed.

To eliminate the fall hazard over the vanishing edge, we partnered with Reynolds Polymers to fabricate and install an acrylic railing system. The panels were set into a channel within the floor. So, regardless of the height of the floor within the pool, there will always be a railing of sufficient height to protect pedestrians and bathers.

All in all, the repairs to the project took almost 20 months.  The ensuing lawsuit resulted in a jury trial and a judgment of $4,750,000 – to date, the nation’s largest judgment in a residential pool construction defect case.

How a Mr. Rogers Episode Featuring a Small Pool Helped FIGHT SEGREGATION

In 1964 the Civil Rights Act outlawed segregation in public places. One person on the forefront of breaking down barriers of segregation was Fred Rogers. His children’s show, “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” ran from 1968 to 2001, and he became famous for the compassion he showed on the show.

In particular, two scenes from different years (one from 1969 and the other from 1993, per NPR) have been getting a lot of attention from viewers, who have been tweeting and posting them on Instagram and Reddit. Rogers (who passed away in 2003) and Officer Clemmons (played by François Clemmons), a

black actor, both dip their feet into a wading pool.

Mr. Rogers Episode an Important Moment For Civil Rights

Civil unrest over U.S. pool segregation policies coincided with the airing of the first scene, and many viewers saw it as Rogers speaking out against racism. Rogers is shown in the scene inviting Officer Clemmons to join him in a wading pool for a refreshing foot soak. Rogers offers Clemmons his towel after Clemmons says he doesn’t have one.

In 1969, when this episode aired, many public pools were still

segregated despite the passage of the Civil Rights Act almost five years earlier. This act of kindness from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood meant more than it seemed at the time.

For tens of thousands of young viewers, it was a chance to see that there was no reason to assume that people of different races couldn’t enjoy the same activities together, such as sitting at a table or swimming in the same pool.

Mr. Rogers had a good friend in Police Officer Clemmons. It was a hot and sunny day. To ask if he wanted to take a seat and relax for a while to cool off was the humane thing to do.

It’s a small thing, but it would be a great example of compassion and acceptance for the rest of humanity. What a terrific example to set for millions of children watching at home. The imagery of that moment was a canonizing footnote in television history.

The pair’s final episode together in 1993 featured a replay of the same scene from 24 years earlier. While soaking his tired feet, Rogers invites Clemmons to do the same. “Sure!” Clemmons gives his reply.

When promoting his memoir, which came out in May 2020, and in the 2018 documentary about the show, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?,” Clemmons discussed these powerful clips.

“They didn’t want black people to come and swim in their swimming pools, and Fred said, ‘That is absolutely ridiculous,’” Clemmons recalled in the documentary.

“He invited me to come over and to rest my feet in the water with him,” Clemmons said. “The icon Fred Rogers not only was showing my brown skin in the tub with his white skin as two friends, but as I was getting out of that tub, he was helping me dry my feet.”

They revisited the scene in their final episode together in 1993, and Clemmons says reenacting it affected him deeply.

The 1969 episode of “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood” featuring Officer François Clemmons is widely considered to be a groundbreaking moment in children’s television. François Clemmons was a regular character on the show. The character Officer Clemmons was a friendly police officer who often visited Mr. Rogers in his neighborhood and sang songs with him.

“I think he was making a very strong statement. That was his way. I still was not convinced that Officer Clemmons could have a positive influence in the neighborhood and in the real-world neighborhood, but I think I was proven wrong,” said Clemmons.

“To say that he didn’t know what he was doing, or that he accidentely stumbled into integration or talking about racism or sexism, that’s not Mr. Rogers,” said Clemmons.

The episode was seen as a powerful statement against racism and segregation, and it was widely praised for its positive representation of racial harmony on children’s television.

This episode, and Officer Clemmons character throughout the series, helped to break down racial barriers and show children that people of all races can be friends and treated with kindness.

The relationship between Mr. Rogers and Officer Clemmons was not only symbolic but also personal, as François Clemmons was a close friend of Mr. Rogers, his presence on the show had special meaning . He was a pioneer of children’s television programming, Mr. Rogers was committed to using his platform to promote love, kindness, and acceptance. The 1969 episode featuring Officer Clemmons is a testament to this commitment, and it continues to be an important and inspiring moment in the history of children’s television.

It is worth to mention that the episode was not controversial at the time, however, the gesture of two men of different races sharing the pool was one of the first and most powerful demonstrations of racial equality on television.

Much has changed since the first airing of that episode but the road to a fair and caring society is long and arduous. It was five decades ago when Officer Clemmons and Mr. Rogers conveyed a message that is as powerful today as it was fifty years ago.

Surety Bonds For Pool CONSTRUCTION

Robin Kix of Lance Surety explains what pool contractors need to know about surety bonds for the pool construction trade.

If you are a contractor who is involved in pool construction or making other outdoor site improvements, you might be required to obtain a contractor’s license and a license bond.

Swimming pool contractors in some states are required to obtain specialized licenses, and bonds are frequently required as a condition of licensing.

For example, California requires swimming pool contractors to obtain a swimming pool contractor license, which carries a bonding requirement as a licensing condition. Other states, including Florida and Texas, also require bonds for pool contractors who perform electrical work on pumps and other components of pool installation.

Even if your state does not require you to obtain a specialized license for pool construction work, you might have to get a general contractor’s license and post a bond to perform work above a certain amount.

In addition to license bonds, there are other types of contractor bonds that you might need based on the size of a project or the requirements of the project owner.

Here is some information about contractor bonds for pool contractors and those who perform work on other outdoor improvements.

What is a Surety Bond?

A surety bond is a legally binding agreement between the following parties:

• Principal – The individual required to post a bond.

• Obligee – The party, which might be a governmental licensing authority or private project owner, that requires the bond.

• Surety – The bond company that approves and issues a bond as a guarantee the principal will comply with its legal and contractual obligations.

Surety bonds are not a form of insurance. Instead, they protect the obligee and the public against potential misconduct on the part of the principal.

When a bond company approves a surety application, the principal must sign an indemnity agreement through which it agrees to hold the surety harmless in the event of a filed bond claim and loss. Ultimately, the principal is the party who will be responsible for paying valid bond claims that might be filed.

License bonds are bonds that might be required as a licensing condition before a contractor can secure a license. These bonds might be required by a state licensing body or by a city or county before a contractor can obtain a license or certificate to perform work in the jurisdiction.

Many contractors who perform work on outdoor improvements or construct pools might also be required to post contractor bonds. A contractor bond is a type of surety bond that guarantees the contractor will perform work that meets the provisions called for in a contract.

These bonds might be required for public projects valued at $100,000 or more. Many private project owners also require bonds before they will enter into contracts with pool contractors and those who will perform work on other outdoor improvements. The following three types of contractor bonds are common:

Bid bond – A bond that might be required as a condition of bidding on a project that guarantees the winning bidder will follow through and perform the contract at the bid price even if the contractor forgot to include something in the bid.

Performance bond – A bond that might be required by a public or private project owner that guarantees the contractor will perform according to the provisions called for under the contract and will not complete substandard work.

Payment bond – A bond that guarantees the general contractor will pay its subcontractors and suppliers for their labor and materials that protects the subcontractors and suppliers as well as the private project owner. Payment bonds protect private project owners from potential mechanic’s liens that might otherwise be filed by parties that have not received timely payments for their work from the general contractor.

It’s 2023 so we’re going to kick things off with a project that just got underway this year. A guitar pool design that just has award-winner written all over it from the word “go”.

Chris Johannsen is a real upand-comer who knows a thing or two about creating an over-thetop luxury outdoor experience. After all, the award-winning designer has made a career out of capturing his client’s vision for their ideal backyard and landscape. Working hand-inhand with builder JDO Pools & Spas, Johannsen is poised to set a new career milestone with the design of this incredible

guitar-shaped pool design. While certainly not the first musical instrument-shaped pool, the project is definitely a first for Johannsen who flat-out told us that projects like this are not typical for him.

The design represents a turning point for Johannsen who up until now has been known for luxurious but traditional backyard designs that are more of the norm for his particular region. Johannsen claims he was thrilled when he was contacted for the opportunity to step outside his comfort zone and design a backyard that will feature a guitar-shaped swimming pool.

Guitar Pool Designed Around Fun & Accessibility

The project represented some difficult challenges for his Virginiabased design firm CreativEscapes. The technical and creative requirements called for a design that was quite unlike anything Johannsen had ever designed.

“It’s a very unique design,” said Johannsen, and explained that the client for this particular project is a disabled veteran with a profound love of music. “We put a lot of consideration into making sure that he’s able to enjoy the space to the fullest.”

“Since the client is a musician, he wanted a guitarshaped pool and the design we came up with really worked out great,” explained Johannsen, “we use the neck of the guitar as zero entry where he can enter in and go down.”

The entire swimming pool was custom designed for the client, not only as an art piece but to be able to offer ease of accessibility. Ease of use and the client’s comfort in the pool was of paramount concern to Johannsen throughout the process.

“There’s a nice sun deck with a sunken fire feature in the middle where the homeowner can pull up his wheelchair and have conversations with guests on the sun deck. It’s great because he’ll be able to get in and out of the pool himself. This is really a big thing because he enjoys independence,” explained Johannsen.

One of the most dramatic elements of this particular pool design is the strategically placed fire feature that becomes the focal piece of this rockin’ pool project.

Creating a Statement Piece

While this pool is being designed for accessibility, what’s truly impressive is how this has been incorporated into a distinctly unique pool experience. The elegant guitar shape appeals to the client’s personal tastes as well as the music lover in all of us.

“At the top of the neck where the tuning pins are, will be a hot tub that will incorporate a lift system,” explained Johannsen, “there will also be an overflow going down the neck of the guitar with sunken lights for the strings.”

One of the most dramatic elements of this particular pool design is the strategically placed fire feature that becomes the focal piece of this rockin’ pool project.

“The fire element is actually submerged below the water and the ignition system is above the water,” said Johannsen, “the gas will bubble and float above and actually ignite above the water so that it looks like the fire is just dancing on the water. We’re working with an engineer now, Interior 2000, a local fire pit manufacturer, to design and build it.”

This project has been a labor of love for Johannsen who says the design is one he particularly enjoyed working on. The fact that he is drawing clients who trust him with their wildest ambitions for their outdoor living space is not lost on him. “Really, I love everything about it. I’ve been super lucky to have some really awesome clients,” said Johannsen.

The Unconventional Pool Art of BENEDETTO BUFALINO

French artist Benedetto Bufalino is creating a sensation on social media with his unique & artistic pool art made from old vehicles.

When we talk about pool art, it’s impossible to have a conversation without mentioning Benedetto Bufalino. He is an artist who has gained recognition for his unique and imaginative use of vehicles in his art installations.

One of Bufalino’s most notable projects is his series of “vehicle pools,” in which he transforms cars and buses into functional swimming pools.

Born in 1978, the french artist has gained a reputation as one of the most innovative and imaginative artists of his generation, with a unique and playful approach to art that engages and delights audiences around the world.

One of the key themes in Bufalino’s work is the idea of transformation and reinvention. He is known for taking ordinary objects and giving them new life and purpose, often in humorous and surprising ways.

Repurposing Old & Discarded Vehicles as Pool Art

Bufalino’s pool creations are more than just functional swimming pools; they are also works of art that challenge traditional notions of what a pool can be.

he begins working with a new client, he is focused on bringing their dream pool to life. It’s this dedication to excellence and attention to detail that has earned Roca a reputation as one of the premier pool designers in the industry.

In this special feature, we had the opportunity to sit down with Roca at the International Pool Spa Patio Expo and learn more about his approach to pool design, his favorite projects, and what sets him apart from the competition.

PM: PM (Pool Magazine): How did you first get started in the pool industry?

JR (Joan Roca): I am an industrial engineer. I graduated from the University of Costa Rica in the early eighties and I’ve been working in the swimming pool industry since 1975. Back then, I was a kid working along with my father. That’s when I really fell in love with the pool industry.

In 1982, was my first international pool experience, I really fell in love with that as well. It was more amazing than I thought it could be.

It was there that I had the luck of meeting the three founders of Genesis. I did all the programs that they had. You know, if you are an engineer or a doctor or whatever and you wanted a master’s degree or PH degree, there are hundreds of universities in the world where you can go to get it. But if you’re a pool builder, there was really no place to study something like that. So they created a program called Genesis. I did the whole thing, and I became the highest category, which is the master pool designer.

PM: What was that you learned in the Genesis program that gave you the knowledge and the confidence to go out there and dominate?

JR: Genesis gave me the ability, confidence and, technology to add to my passion and talent. If this was basketball - on your own, you can train and train and still never be like Michael Jordan. If you have the talent inside you to be a star, Genesis will bring that out of you.

PM: What inspires your design process and how do you work with a client on helping them conceptualize their ideal outdoor living environment?

JR: Well, the question is not easy because what inspires you? I was thinking about this question, and I think that what inspires me is the site. When you actually visit to the place as a designer, you are there, you see it, you feel it, you see the architecture of the house, of the buildings. It’s at that time that you see the view, the weather, how the sun is moving. Is it a cold place, a tropical place? How is the garden, the landscaping? This is where I get my inspiration and of course, knowing who is going to swim there. When I am there, I’m imagining what the area will be and that is what inspires me to take my paper and pencil and start designing.”

PM: What we enjoy about your work is that really, no two pools are quite exactly alike. Can you explain your design philosophy?

JR: Every pool is different because when I sit at my drawing table to design a pool, I start from scratch. I sit there and I say, okay, we have the images of the property, the survey and all the notes that I wrote when I interviewed my customers. I start by making a shape that conforms to all that information. Taking all that information and translating that into a drawing.

PM: You’ve been in the pool industry since 1975, what’s changed since you first started?

JR: When I started building pools, I remember that my father used to do everything in one and a half inch. One skimmer, one main drain, one and a half inch, one pump. In that time, everything was very simple. I think that mainly what has changed the most is technology and maybe some tendencies. Like in the past, people used to have very deep pools.

PM: What do you foresee the next couple of years looking like for our industry?

JR: Well, the whole industry has always been up and down other than in 2008. It’s my gut feeling that things are going to be okay. What could be affecting things with economy right now is the situation with Russia and their war in the Ukraine, for example. In Jacksonville, there are a couple of customers that I designed a really nice pool for, people unrelated to each other and they decided to the pool builder, to wait until they see what happens there. I think that this “wait and see” way of thinking could be happening with more and more people.

PM: What is some advice that you would impart on professionals that are looking to design and build the way you do?

JR: The first thing that came to my mind is dedication and integrity in their work. Whatever you do, even if you are a shoemaker, soccer player, teacher, do it with dedication. If you put dedication into your work, the first 50% is done. And then, integrity - in the full concept of the word. Do it well, with the right skills, and make it with passion and respect. Apply all your knowledge, technology, and abilities in each and every design that you do. Above all, pay attention to your customer.
