Book Arts—Japanese Bookbinding

Age 13 & up

Discover the traditions and methods of the handmade book, focusing on the Japanese Stab Binding method. This method produces a book with a spine that does not allow the book to be laid flat. No need to fold papers to create separate book signatures―instead, the papers are merely gathered and holes for binding are ‘stabbed’ into the paper. It slightly resembles a photo album with metal screw posts for binding papers/signatures. Add original cover papers such as marbling, suminagashi, as well as handmade paper. Price includes a $50 materials fee which covers all basic supplies. Get materials list online for suggested supplemental materials, plus a list of what is included in materials fee.
