Our metalsmithing program has classes and workshops on various topics, allowing students to build their knowledge on firm foundations as they progress through the curriculum. The studio is equipped with five Smith acetylene/air torches, a Smith oxy-acetylene Little Torch, oxy-acetylene melting torch, centrifugal caster, metal clay and enameling kilns, hydraulic press, combination rolling mills, dual-speed buffing arbor with dust collector, drill press, flex shafts, 12" shear, hand tools, vacuum table, advanced ventilation system, a resource library, and more. Prices cover tool use and basic supplies. Precious metals are not included.

Open Metals Studio— FALL 2023

Requirements: Open Metals Studio sessions are only available to currently registered MAC Adult Jewelry/ Metalsmithing students. Youth classes and workshops are excluded. Advanced registration is required.

Registration Start Date for Fall 2023 Sessions: Monday, September 25 at 12:30pm

Fees: $15 per three-hour session

Age 16 & up

Artists have been creating jewelry for over 100,000 years with the earliest examples originating in Africa and proliferating throughout the world, growing in complexity and creativity. Learn both historical and contemporary practices in this foundation course. Explore fundamentals of fabrication with nonferrous metals such as copper, brass, and sterling silver. Through assignments, gain experience in sawing, filing, silver (torch) soldering, polishing, and basic patination. Chainmaking and the elements of design will also be introduced. No prerequisite. Price includes a $45 basic materials fee which provides all basic materials. Additional materials available for purchase.

Jewelry / Metalsmithing II—Surface & Design

Age 16 & up

Build your fabrication skills while adding options beyond stock sheet and wire. Learn to create custom decorative surfaces and textures, including roll printing, etching, and patterning. Using your own patterned metal, explore methods for adding dimension, such as easy hollow forms, and unique pillow forms using the hydraulic press. Options for adding bezel-set cabochons to your work included. Prerequisite: Jewelry/Metalsmithing I or equivalent experience. Price includes a $50 basic materials fee which provides all basic materials. Additional materials available for purchase. *No class 11/23

Beginning Stonesetting

Age 16 & up

Learn the essentials of stone setting in this fast paced class. Starting with bezel setting cabochon stones, learn to correctly measure and size various bezel materials to securely capture a wide variety of stones. Build on these basic skills through embellishments, setting of irregular and rough stones with a variety of sheet metal and wire designs. Gain confidence in using stones and unusual items, such as found objects or artifacts. Specific processes include bezel setting, bezel and prong settings, wire cage settings, tab settings, and volcano settings. Prerequisite: Jewelry/Metalsmithing I or equivalent. Class price includes materials fee of $50. After first class, this fee is non-refundable.

Intro to Enameling

Age 16 & up

Add color to your metal with this ancient method of fusing specially-formulated glass onto metal. Sifted, painted, and wet-packed techniques will be introduced, including stencils, basse-taille, decals, sgraffito, and painting. Torch and kiln firing methods will be covered. Prerequisite: Jewelry/ Metalsmithing I or equivalent. Class price includes materials fee of $50. After first class, this fee is non-refundable.

Rings Galore!

Age 16 & up

Explore the wonderful world of ring making! Learn three approaches to ring making. First, create a marriage of metals bead ring using three dimensional forms incorporating copper and brass. Second, make a bronze ring through cuttlebone casting. End the term by designing a bezel set ring with found river rocks. Students may bring in their own oval or circle stones to incorporate as well. Prerequisite: Jewelry/Metalsmithing I or equivalent. Class price includes materials fee of $50. After first class, this fee is nonrefundable.

Boxes & Lockets

Age 16 & up

Combine hollow forming techniques, and mechanisms to create functional pieces that can hold precious items: simple lockets, round or square boxes, and objects like poison rings. We will also explore hydraulic press, hollow form construction, hinges, catches, and closures. Boxes can become small sculptural objects, wall hangings or jewelry. Learn how to construct boxes and pill containers through saw, bending, and soldering. Prerequisite: Jewelry/ Metalsmithing I, Metalsmithing II also recommended. Class price includes a materials fee of $55 which is non-refundable after class begins. *No class 11/23

Centrifugal Casting

Age 16 & up

Students will learn the skills necessary to create their own centrifugal castings. We will learn how to carve and manipulate wax, make silicone molds to create multiples, and clean up your castings. Create models with a variety of additive and subtractive waxes to produce a piece of custom cast jewelry or small sculpture. Skills studied include: spruing, investing, burnout, and finishing. Prerequisite: Jewelry/Metalsmithing I or equivalent experience. Class price includes a materials fee of $50 which is non-refundable after class begins. *No class 11/2, 11/23

Chainmaking Studio

Age 16 & up

Explore some of the exciting techniques available to jewelers to create a range of chain styles. Weave a cord from fine gauge wire, explore connections that are soldered, unsoldered, and even melted. Experimentation and invention is encouraged. Prerequisite: Jewelry/Metalsmithing I or equivalent. Price includes a $30 materials and studio fee which is non-refundable after class begins.

Argentium Filigree Granulation

Age 16 & up

Historically used for highly decorative twisted wire lacework and granulation in classic Etruscan jewelry, filigree variations can also be found throughout Europe, Russia, Asia, and South America. Make twisted wire filigree, and create modern square wire frameworks. Use powdered and chip solders, then apply them to your design. Work with Argentium silver, a highly tarnish and firescale resistant alloy, along with fine silver. Fuse silver spheres onto Argentium, a classic granulation technique. Prerequisite: Jewelry/Metalsmithing I or equivalent. Price includes a $60 studio and materials fee (includes some Argentium, fine silver wire, sheet, and solder).

Color Filled Enamel Earrings

Age 16 & up

Make a pair of silver earrings, adorned with gorgeous glass enamels using the champleve technique. Using fine silver sheet as our base, create your own line drawing that will be transformed into a wire design applied to the metal surface. From here, learn to apply delicate layers of colorful powdered glass enamels to your design, which are fired in a kiln to fuse the glass to metal. The results are luminous, transparent layers of glass. Prerequisite: Jewelry/Metalsmithing I or equivalent. Class price includes materials fee of $60. After first class, this fee is non-refundable.
