Textiles

Our Textile Arts Program offers classes including basketry, felting, knitting, crochet, dyeing, spinning and on-loom weaving. The weaving studio has over 60 floor and table looms including an AVL compu-dobby, spinning and dyeing equipment, a wide selection of yarns for purchase, and an extensive library. During class time only, students have access to a weaving design software program called Fiberworks. Students will be assigned a loom by their instructor at first class, based on class needs, student experience, and projects planned.

Textiles Studio Drop-In Policy

Currently registered weaving students may drop in to the weaving studio at times other than during their registered class. Students may drop in anytime the center is open except during other class times. For drop-in, please sign in and out in the book at the front office. Between terms, there may be some additional time for students to drop in for a small daily fee to finish work. See studio calendar for available weaving times in-between terms. All work must be finished by the end of term. Students should choose projects that can be completed by the end of the term. Looms are not reserved in advance for students—registration is on a first come basis.

Drop Spindle Workshop

Age 13 & up

Have you dreamed of making custom yarns that match your vision of what you want for your next project? Soft and fluffy, tightly twisted, thick, thin, or perhaps both? What about creating your own colors? When you can’t find what you want in a commercial yarn, why not create your own? Explore an art form that is just as relevant today as it was 200 years ago. Learn basic drop spindle techniques, a variety of fiber types, blending your own fiber, and how to turn fluff into yarn! Drop spindles available for use, or you may bring your own. Price includes $25 materials fee that is nonrefundable when class begins.

Sewing: Quilted Fabric Postcards—Intergenerational Age 12 & up

Beginners Welcome! It is fun and inspiring to make a quilted fabric postcards and actually mail them to family and friends. Learn to make 4” by 6” quilted postcards that you design, quilt and embellish. The possibilities of themes are endless; make a holiday postcard or make and send a special someone a birthday postcard, or even a Valentine. The focus will be on creativity and less on detailed instruction. Basic materials included in class. Sewing machines available. Additional supply list available online. Class price includes a non-refundable studio and materials fee of $30. Younger participants are encouraged to register with an adult.

Sewing: Rope & Fabric Bowls

Age 13 & up

Learn to make rope or fabric bowls to give as gifts or hold anything from fruits, veggies, jewelry or customized to suit your needs. Learn different techniques using basic cotton clothesline, braided rope or paracord rope. Basic techniques of building a classic bowl shape, block stitch, loop finish, and flat tassel finish will be taught. Thread play, embellishments and fabric wrapping is demonstrated to finish off your beautiful bowl. Depending on time, additional smaller bowls for gifts can be completed. Prerequisite: Basic sewing machine skills, not for beginners. Basic materials included in class, with additional rope, fabric and thread available for purchase. Sewing machines available. Class price includes a non-refundable studio and materials fee of $40.

Hats from Sweaters—Intergenerational Age 12 & up

Transform reclaimed sweaters to create fabulous, warm and water repellent hats. Embellish them with fabric scraps, buttons and beads. Bring a felted wool sweater to cut up and a pair of scissors and a sewing machine if you have one. Class price includes a materials fee of $10 that covers basic materials. Intro to Needle Felting—Intergenerational Age 12 & up

In this workshop, explore the magic of needle felting! This versatile technique can be used to create felt from roving without water. Learn the basics of needle felting while creating a small animal of your choice. Class price includes a materials fee of $10 that covers basic materials. Students may bring optional supplies: sharp scissors, felt, yarn and fabric scraps, beads and buttons, unused thick household sponge.

Weaving—On Loom: Beginning

Reed Baskets

Age 12 & up

In this class, you will learn the art of reed basket weaving. This hands-on workshop series will teach you various techniques to create beautiful baskets using reed. You will explore different shapes like square, round, and rectangular designs. Customize your baskets by coloring the reed with dyes of your choice. Additionally, we will cover essential finishing techniques to ensure the durability of your handwoven creations. This class is suitable for both beginners and intermediate basket-weaving enthusiasts. Come and discover the world of reed basketry. Prerequisite: previous reed basketry weaving experience. All supplies included. Price includes a $50 materials fee for basketry materials which is non-refundable after class begins.

Reed Basketry Studio

Need more time to practice your reed basket weaving? This is a wonderful opportunity for individuals with experience in reed basket weaving to come together and work on their personal projects in a collaborative environment. During this studio series, you will have access to a fully equipped workspace with all the necessary tools and materials for reed basket weaving. This class time is formatted for students with basket weaving experience who just need some guidance and support in their personal basketry projects. This is not a guided class with instructional time. Bring your materials and tools to class. Some materials available for purchase.

Basketry—Beginning Pine Needle

Age 12 & up

Using ponderosa pine needles learn how to gather and prepare pine needles for basketry. You will get an overview of how to dye pine needles and several coiling stitches to use in your pine needle baskets. By the end of the class, you will have the skills to weave basic pine needle baskets on your own and a mini coiled basket with a sampling of stitches. All supplies included. Price includes a $30 materials fee for fiber materials which is non-refundable after class begins.

Historical and contemporary weaving practices discussed. Created as a ‘next step’ class, complete beginners are encouraged to register for the beginning foundation course, but those who have had some experience can join this more challenging class. Beginners will make samplers. Beginning students cannot miss first class. Continuing students will design and produce more complex works. Students will be assigned a loom by their instructor at first class, based on class needs, student experience, and projects planned. *No class 11/11, 11/23, 11/25

Historical and contemporary weaving practices discussed. Not for beginners. Students must be able to warp a floor loom independently and read drafts. Students will design and produce more complex works. Students will be assigned a loom by their instructor at first class, based on class needs, student experience, and projects planned.
