1. THE VILLAGE Portmeirion was the brainchild of the architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis whose ambition was to create an ideal village to enhance rather than blend in with its natural surroundings. Using an eco friendly approach, he designed his architectural vision around a Mediterranean piazza. Endangered buildings and unwanted artefacts from all over the globe were transported and rebuilt to create a nest of loggias, grand porticoes and tiny terracotta roofed houses, painted in bright pastel hues. The result is truly unique. Think Italian Riviera meets rural Wales with a riot of colour and architectural styles. A free 20 minute tour of the village is offered to all visitors from 9.30am-3.30pm during the high season - but bespoke excursions can be designed according to your guests’ interests with advanced notice.
2. THE GARDENS Discover one of Wales’ most stunning, natural landscapes. Our subtropical forest, affectionately known as the Gwyllt, features Britain’s largest trees, secret gardens, a derelict castle and rare flowers - plus lots more. Ask the informtion centre for a free gardening booklet. During the high season, our guests will enjoy our free train ride to the Oriental Garden, where they’ll find a classic temple overlooking the Chinese bridge and lake. In the warmer months, large leafed rhododendrons fill the air with an exotic aroma. Guests can disembark the train at any point to explore one of several paths that takes them along 16 miles of coastal paths. The views are simply stunning.
3. OUR EVENTS Expect an exciting programme of events showcasing the best of all things Welsh - from music and culture to food and flowers. Apart from the annual staples of The Prisoner Convention, Festival of Gardens, Festival Number 6 and our Christmas Fair, there will be a series of pop events celebrating the year of sea 2018.
