WELCOME TO PORVOO

Riverbank

Porvoo - my home Porvoo’s coat of arms dates back to

the year 1423. The letter C in the coat of arms stands for the Latin words castrum and castellum, meaning a castle or fort. The year is 1978 and I can’t get to sleep. I look out at night-time Porvoo from the open window of my apartment. I admire the stately pine trees and wonder how it can possibly be so quiet that I can’t sleep.

As dawn breaks the birds begin their song. Nowhere can I hear the familiar sounds of the Helsinki metropolitan area, where I had always lived: cars and trams, rumbling and squeaking. It took a few weeks before I got back into the rhythm of sleep. Porvoo has the sea, a river, a riverside boulevard, lakes, hills. A proper town with its stone houses and squares, manors and a real rural landscape, it has forests, fields and an archipelago. It has a history and a present day. It has a bilingual history, and nowadays the ever increasing amount of multilingual tourism gives the town a cosmopolitan feel. Like the townspeople, the tourists want services, culture, entertainment, shops, hotels, markets, parks, places to meet, places to have a good time.

13th century 4

Porvoo’s current settlement begins with the arrival of immigrants from Sweden.

1380

As a person who enjoys good food, I am happy that word has spread about the town’s restaurants and shops, so that our visitors can often tell us beforehand where they want to eat and which shops they want to visit. For me, the town is perfect as a place for exercise and recreation. The airport is near, you can reach Helsinki quickly and so it’s no problem to travel for performances elsewhere in Finland. The sea is only a short distance away and you can reach the best places to fish early in the morning. For the amateur there are plenty of cycle paths and fantastic winding roads for motorcyclists. In winter Porvoo’s ”Dolomites”, the slopes at Kokonniemi, are excellent for Telemark skiing. You can take your dog for a walk right from your doorstep, and in my garden, my dog Perro (who weighs all of 60 kilos), has freedom to race like a dervish around the trees and bushes. I’m happy to call Porvoo my home.

Juha Laitila, scriptwriter - actor - entertainer

Porvoo is granted its Town Charter. The building of the Cathedral starts in 1400.

16th century

In the early 16th century Danish pirates destroy Porvoo, at the end of the century the town is burnt to the ground by the Russians (the 25-Year War).

WHAT TO SEE IN PORVOO

Old Porvoo

Welcome home! 1.6.-28.8. Guided tours in Porvoo Cathedral Mon – Fri at 10.15 am, 12.15 pm, 1.30 pm, 3.15 pm and 5.15 pm. I remember well my first visit to Porvoo Cathedral. At the time I was still a student of theology, and we had come to watch the ordination of a priest. I thought then what a magnificent church it was, but I would never want to work there. My own home church was an example of 1950s architecture and, compared to it, the Cathedral seemed “too grand” for me. In addition, the very word Cathedral, which in Finnish suggests judgement or doom, was enough to put me off. Well, ten years later, I myself was ordained as a priest of the Cathedral congregation, and the Cathedral became my home church. I still consider the Cathedral a splendid and beautiful church, where the high walls and lofty ceiling bear witness

to the existence of something greater than man. The church’s centuries-long history tells its own tale about men’s longing to find God. But above all, the Cathedral is a home, where I can come to find peace, and where I can come into contact with life in all its variety, whether alone or together with others. Time and time again I have to remind myself and others that the Finnish word for Cathedral does not mean that this church is place of “doom”, but that it comes from the Latin word “domus”, which means home. The Cathedral is the home church of the bishop as well as mine and it is a home for the whole congregation, so welcome home!

RESTAURANTS AND CAFÉS

Porvoo for food lovers Runeberg’s cake named after Finland’s national poet J.L. Runeberg is traditionally eaten in Finland on the poet’s birthday, 5 February, but you can buy them in cafés all year round, for example in Café Helmi and Café Fanny in Old Porvoo.

There is a saying that a ticket to travel somewhere is the only purchase that can make you richer. And as a native of Porvoo I would add to the aphorism that living in a place where you can have Runeberg muffins all year round, you have every reason to be happy! The café and restaurant culture in Porvoo is so diverse it almost takes your breath away. You can stop for a simple, relaxed lunch, sample home food made from local ingredients or enjoy fine dining with gourmet dishes cooked by prestigious master chefs; you can chase away any trace of gloom brought on by the grey everyday by visiting a café where crystal chandeliers

and inviting display counters filled with so many kinds of tempting cakes and pastries will make you feel you are living in a dream. Porvoo is good for your soul, as well for your stomach! In Porvoo even take-aways are ennobled by the surroundings. Why not some time try out how the take-away meals offered by the local restaurants taste sitting on a park bench under the pine trees in Linnamäki Park, admiring the view of the Old Town – following in the footsteps of the artist Albert Edelfelt himself, admiring the picture postcard landscape in reality will be as good as any dessert.

Millariikka Rytkönen, from Milla blog ”Millainen Elämä” (What a life).

Wi-Fi network In Old Porvoo the Wi-Fi network can be used in cafés and restaurants including the Porvoo Roastery and the Old Town Public House. The Art Factory has a wireless network that serves the whole area. Password available from the Art Factory information desk. 12

LIVING IN PORVOO

Friends of history: a dream come true Porvoo is investing in modern high-quality housing and new residential areas are currently going up all the time in different parts of town. www.porvoo.fi/tontit

History has been our most beloved hobby for ages and ages. We got to know Porvoo only through the pages of history books. Seeing the film ”Tanssi yli hautojen” (Dance over the Graves), telling about the Diet of Porvoo in 1809 and the romance between Czar Alexander I and Ulla Möllersvärd, inspired us to visit Porvoo and, opened our eyes to the treasure trove that the town is. We started to think of moving to Porvoo. Surprisingly quickly, we both found suitable places to live in this idyllic town, in the Empire-style district. We moved about two years ago. It was thrilling to settle down to live in this cornucopia of history. A living breathing history book, the Old Town with its Cathedral takes the visitor back to the past at any time. For our own part, we wanted to contribute to keeping the Diet of Porvoo, its unique significance for Finland, the personal histories relating to it and the fascinating local history in the public eye and to making it come alive. This is why we founded Wanhan

Porvoon Hywät Asukkaat – Good Citizens of Old Porvoo, an association that aims to illustrate local history through role figures and various activities. The association has organised monthly events relating to the theme all year round, including lectures and visits to manor houses. The Old Town, with its buildings dating back to the Diet of Finland provides an authentic backdrop for our activities. Other interesting places to visit are the historic manors in the immediate vicinity of the town – there are more of them here in eastern Uusimaa than anywhere else in Finland. The personal histories relating to them are often closely linked with the Diet of Porvoo.

NATIONAL URBAN PARK National urban parks help to protect environmental values

The aim of national urban parks is to preserve urban nature and built cultural environments so that they form a comprehensive, integrated whole. These parks play an essential role in sustainable urban planning and building. The nature and the cultural sites of the urban park are important recreation areas for the people of Porvoo and form a vital part of their identity as inhabitants of the town. For tourists, the national urban park area offers places to visit, from mediaeval churches to nature reserves, and gives them an opportunity to enjoy a variety of experiences, from birdwatching to a tour of Edelfelt’s art. The Porvoo national urban park comprises areas that are significant in terms of both cultural history and natural biodiversity. The park includes 25 separate sites, covering 1122 hectares of land area and 1030 hectares of water area, not to mention the many stories it has to tell.

NATIONAL URBAN PARK The August Eklöf Park was completed in 2009, on the bicentennial of the Diet of Porvoo. The park is a breathtaking sight, filled with flowers from April to November, beginning in spring when 40,000 bulbs come into bloom and continuing into autumn with the flowering of thousands of perennials of more than 60 different species. The park is lined with 40 white-flowering ornamental apple trees forming an avenue. Through the middle of the park run two 30-metre-long streams bordered by lilac trees. Right at the centre stands a work of art “Valtiopäivätriptyykki” – “The Porvoo Diet Triptych” by artists Kirsi Kaulanen and Ylva Hollander, the colours of which are reflected in the park fixtures and lighting.

The Old Town, the riverside on both banks of the river, with their restaurants and boat quays form a fantastic milieu for the parks in the town centre. The environment is unique in Finland. One of the functions of the parks is to support tourism and help to create experiences for visitors. Best of all, many of the parks in central Porvoo are on the tourist routes or within easy walking distance. The Porvoo river valley with its cultural environment was awarded the status of a national urban park in 2010. The area includes very old park areas, such as Linnamäki, Näsinmäki, the small parks of the Old Town, the historic Runeberg Park and the more recent riverside parks. Porvoo’s parks contain monuments and statues to many historical figures of note. The townspeople are rightly proud of the grand old trees in the parks and the beautiful tree-lined avenues. I particularly recommend the experience of visiting the new parks on the west bank of the river, Köynnöspuisto Park and across the footbridge August Eklöf Park with all its flowers, and the Japanese-style Kirjailijapuisto Park on the northern side of the Town Library. For families with children there are numerous parks with playgrounds. The Moomin playground in the Town Park is particularly popular. A good number of events are arranged in Porvoo’s parks. It’s also a good idea to go cycling from the town centre and enjoy the peace of nature on the outskirts of the town near the sea along the Kokonniemi-UddasHamari shore. In Porvoo, you can go in for various activities on your own and free of charge, such as Frisbee golf or bmxcross biking, for example, at the Hornhattula local recreation area. Porvoo has much to offer tourists in the different seasons, also in winter. During the Christmas season, the streets of Porvoo are bright with sparkling Christmas lights and about ten illuminated Christmas trees.

Porvoo is well known for the red ochre painted wooden shorehouses lining the river banks. In the old days ships used to come upriver from the sea to unload and load their cargo here. The buildings which line both banks of the river were the merchants’ warehouses. The bridge offers a picturesque view of the river.

Albert Edelfelt was born in 1854 in Kiiala, 4 km outside Porvoo. The statue looks towards the manor house where he was born. The young Edelfelt went to Paris to study, but always returned to Porvoo in summer. He immortalised well-known Porvoo views in his paintings and is one of the best loved of Finnish artists. Edelfelt’s studio museum is located in Haikko (see page 9). The house of Judge Orreaus behind the statue is where the peasant estate convened during the Diet of Porvoo. Nowadays there is a restaurant in a building in the courtyard.

It was about here that the Great Fire of Porvoo started in 1760. Of the town’s 293 houses, more than 200 burned down. The cause of the fire turned out to be a fish soup cooked in the small hours of the morning: the fire blazed up when the housewife left the stove unattended for a moment. However, the people of Porvoo showed great determination and rebuilt their houses on the old stone foundations.

The Porvoo Diet was both opened and closed in the Cathedral in 1809, and a statue of Czar Alexander I commemorates this historical event. As a result of arson, the church was damaged by fire in 2006, but it has since been restored and was re-inaugurated in November 2008.

The Porvoon Kymnaasi school building was completed in 1759 and served as a grammar school until 1850. The clergy convened there during the Diet in 1809. Czar Alexander I held his opening speech there, and a ball to celebrate the Diet was held in the great hall upstairs. The story goes that the Czar was much taken by a young lady who had dropped her fan, Miss Ulla Möllersvärd. Along with Porvoo Cathedral and the Town Hall, it is one

N. Linsén Park

Gabriel Linsén (1838 – 1914) was a proliferous composer and music teacher at the Porvoo grammar school. His wife Natalia was Finland’s first female photographer and an energetic activist in social affairs and education in Porvoo. At first they lived near the park, but later moved over to the Empire-style district of Porvoo. Gabriel Linsén and his students used to greet the poet Runeberg, who lived nearby, on his birthday (5 February) by singing under his window (for Runeberg’s Home see p. 7). The tradition has continued until this day!

THE ARCHIPELAGO

Äggskär

Heading out to sea from Porvoo A picnic to remember. At the Pellinki

village shop, Söderby-Boden, you can buy a super picnic hamper with all you need for a wonderful picnic in the archipelago

www.soderbyboden.fi

We launch the season at the end of April, when the ice melts. It’s been our custom to sail to the island of Äggskär, where we celebrate by roasting the first sausages of the season at the campfire site. Äggskär is a pearl among the islands of the archipelago, with a stunning landscape and wildlife. Walking around the island you always come across something new and different. Another favourite place of ours is the Pirttisaari outdoor recreation area in the eastern part of the island beside the old customs station. The jetty has been rebuilt, and many people travelling by boat have included this sheltered haven in their itinerary. The eastern part of the bay beside the incoming channel is a good place to drop anchor, but you can also moor your boat to the cliffs in a quiet spot. The area boasts fine sandy beaches, old army fortifications and cannons, and of

course a rich and well-preserved natural environment. When in Pellinki a visit to Benitas Cafe in Sandholmen by the inner sea channel is a must. On Saturday mornings in summer, the market is bustling with islanders, and there are plenty of island delicacies to buy. On Wednesdays there’s also an evening market if it suits your plans better. At Tirmo you can do your shopping easily and quickly by parking your boat alongside others at the visitors’ quay. At both places you can moor your boat for the night and there is often live music in the evenings The season for pike-perch starts from midsummer in Porvoo, and in autumn it’s the time to head for the perch fishing grounds. Once the waters start to cool down later in autumn, the more experienced fishermen go out to catch brown trout.

Fishing permits. To obtain a fishing permit in Finland there are two fees to be paid by adults: the state fishing management fee and the fee

for permission from the owner of the water area (in Porvoo this is mainly the lure fishing fee for the Southern Finland region). Not far from Porvoo centre you can fish at Kokonniemi (at the end of Kokonniementie road) and at the bridges leading to Sikosaari. For hook and line angling or ice fishing no separate permit is needed. For more information see: www.ahven.net

THE ARCHIPELAGO

Experience the magic of the Porvoo archipelago

The Porvoo archipelago has something for everyone: magnificent land- and seascapes, interesting sights and versatile services. You can reach the island of Pellinki by boat, but also by car and bus. The trip on the ferry from Tirmo to Pellinki is an experience in itself. On Pellinki you can visit the art gallery and the museums, or, for instance, enjoy the countryside and the fresh sea air either walking or cycling. The weekly market in summer is a popular place to meet, and the Christmas Fair has an atmosphere like nowhere else. If you want to go out to sea, but don’t have your own boat, why not book a fishing trip and try your luck!

Porvoo Guest Marina

Pellinki also has many summer cottages to rent if you want to stay longer. www.visitporvoo.fi In summer 2015 you can visit Tove Jansson’s summer home on Klovharun Island between 11 and 18 July. The Strandverk network of enterprises in the Eastern Uusimaa region provides genuine experiences of the archipelago. The network includes handicrafts and accommodation services www.strandverk.fi A friendly haven in the centre of town close to all the services. The marina is open from May to the end of September.

You can row to the Hasselholma beach from the opposite shore at Staffan – about 200 metres. A sauna can be reserved from the lifeguards during the summer. More information about the Porvoo beaches at www.porvoo.fi/liikunta

Kokonniemi, right in the centre of Porvoo, is a forested area that is part of the national urban park. It has a skiing centre in winter and an outdoor swimming pool in summer. The area’s network of lighted paths is not only used for jogging and walking, but townspeople also use them to cycle to work.

Upload the routes on your mobile, pack your picnic basket and go for a hike in the countryside.

HOME OF THE ARTS

Art Factory, Jenni Tuominen

Inspiration dwells in Porvoo The cultural scene is well provided for in Porvoo: concert halls with high-quality technology and excellent stages for the performing arts. There are also numerous art galleries where artists hold their exhibitions. The Old Chaplain’s House in the Old Town is one of the favourite galleries. Porvoo is just the right size for me. It has the feeling of a town, but if I miss the buzz of the Helsinki scene, it’s only a short journey away.

The workshop community at the Art Factory is important to me. Having coffee with colleagues and the direct feedback and support I get from them is very valuable.

In Porvoo, you are never far away from nature, and almost every day I take a walk or bike ride in the national urban park here. Maari with its fine views over Old Porvoo is my favourite place.

I recommend anyone visiting Porvoo to take a break from the streets of the town and go to Näsinmäki or Linnamäki, where you have the best views of Old Porvoo. I also recommend a trip by bike along the river to Kokonniemi or Sikosaari.

Porvoo’s varied world of colour and nature are reflected in my design work. In my Marimekko patterns and other illustrations, you can see references to the town’s architecture and its landscape.

For most events tickets are also sold at the door. 32

PORVOO FOR KIDS

Porvoo museum, Old town hall

Explore the town and discover its stories The Magic Button.Historical figures come to life when you press the Magic Button in Porvoo Museum on the third floor of the Old Town Hall! Ulla Möllersvärd dances once again with the Czar of Russia, Ville Vallgren works away at his sculptures and businessmen Auguvst Eklöf and Werner Söderström lift their hats to each other.

I

I live in Porvoo, and for me, Porvoo is a good place to live, even though it’s quite small.

Even close to the centre, there is lots of lovely scenery, down by the river, for example, in the Kokonniemi area and the hills of Näsinmäki and Linnamäki, where you can climb up, have a picnic and get beautiful views over the town. Porvoo also has many places where you can play sports or games, such as the indoor swimming pool, various beaches, a new Frisbee golf course and places for skateboarding. Recently quite a few play parks with different themes have been opened or renovated. Two of my favourite places are the Town Library and the Art Factory. In the library, you can read, play board games or go

on the Internet while you’re waiting for a lift home At the Art Factory there are shops, a cinema, art exhibitions, cafés and restaurants. With my class at school, we’ve visited Runeberg’s Home. It was great getting to know about Runeberg, his family and how they lived. The rooms have been kept almost the same as during his lifetime. During touring tours of the Old Town, you also learn new things about its history and hear interesting stories about people who used to live here. Many of the stories are connected with the Cathedral. As well as its history, Porvoo is also known for Brunberg’s chocolate factory, where you can taste the sweets and choose your favourite ones to buy.

Annika, 12 years

The best views in town open up from the Näsi Stone. Did you know that the stone was thrown there by a giant from Sipoo? And have you 34

heard that elsewhere babies are brought by storks, but in Porvoo they are fetched from under the Näsi Stone? The best mementos of your visit to Porvoo will be photographs taken in Tykkipuisto, which means Cannon Park, by the Old Bridge – if you dare climb and pose on top of the cannon!

PORVOO FOR KIDS

Old Porvoo is like a doll’s house town

A family picnic in the park

When you explore the narrow cobbled streets and lanes of Old Porvoo, you feel as if you were wandering in the pages of a story book. You will find a toyshop where you can buy a real doll’s house or doll’s house furniture. In the Toy Museum even the grown-ups enjoy reminiscing about their childhood, and in the Porvoo Museum, historic figures come to life at the press of a magic button. Auntie Monika’s dramatised tour of Porvoo initiates kids into the secrets of Old Porvoo (see www. teatterisoittorasia.fi). A visit to Brunberg’s chocolate and confectionery shop is a treat that every child will love.

What could be more fun than packing a picnic basket full of goodies and spreading a picnic blanket on the river bank or at the edge of the play park? In the Moomin play park opened last summer the kids can experience all sorts of adventures in the world of the Moomin trolls. Ruusupuisto, or Rose Park, on Laivurinkatu Street is also a great place for kids of all ages. At the tip of Kokonniemi peninsula is a beautiful parkland area with a superb view of the river. There is a large grassy lawn where children can play games, and you can easily spend the whole day there.

Adventures on Linnamäki

Play and Learn in Runeberg’s home

Linnamäki, or Castle Hill, on the outskirts of town, has a fascinating history. The paths that criss-cross the hill and the bridges over the moats make a perfect stage for playing Viking games. Linnamäki is one of the most important ancient monuments in the Uusimaa region, and it’s easy to let your imagination fly in these surroundings. In summer the Porvoo Theatre organises “the Viking Adventure” on Linnamäki, a popular role play game for children.

In J.L. Runeberg’s home you can book a dramatised tour for your family with Mari the maid as your guide. In summer the play area in the outbuilding becomes a Play and Learn environment, where children can get a feeling for what everyday life was like in Runeberg’s day: pumping water from the well, gathering eggs, fishing, going to the market, looking after the horses and pigs…Play and Learn is open every day from 10am–4pm in June and July (except at Midsummer, Friday and Saturday 19–20 June, 2015).

ACCOMMODATION

Why not stay a little longer? Porvoo is wonderful – a beautiful, irresistible

place – and spending a night or two is definitely worth it, because the longer you stay the more you will see and experience!

For 25 years of my life, I have worked in the tourist industry around Europe, living in fantastic cities such as London, Amsterdam, Stockholm and Tallinn. As part of my job, I got to know a wide range of accommodation services all round the world – manor houses, luxury hotels, B&Bs and so on. In fact, I was a hotel manager myself for many years. When asked when I would go back to Finland, I always answered – whenever an interesting work opportunity comes up in the Kuopio or Porvoo direction. It’s not that I have any relatives or other connections there, it’s just the feeling of these places. Now I have spent five years as a returnee back in Finland and I have lived in both towns! Porvoo and its beautiful archipelago has truly won a place in my heart as one of Europe’s loveliest, most idyllic small towns! In its own individual style, the town gives the visitor a sense of history and a tranquil atmosphere, but also plenty to do and see with its varied cultural offerings. They will find plenty of lovely souvenirs, both memories and mementos. As for accommodation, Porvoo has something to suit everyone’s pocket. Charmingly individual, memorable places to stay that will meet visitors’ varied needs and wishes. You can spend the night at a manor house spa with a historic atmosphere, at a good

family hotel in the centre of town, an intimate boutique hotel in the Old Town, a cottage by the sea or a romantic B&B, in the town centre, in the peace of the countryside, or on an island in the archipelago. They say the cobbler must stick to his last, and during my years in tourism abroad I had the dream of my own B&B “sometime in the future” and that some time came true as an experiment in summer 2014, when I was living in Pellinki, in Porvoo’s lovely archipelago. When it became clear during a tourism development project that there is a need for more accommodation capacity during the summer months, I had the idea of bringing the POP-UP B&B concept to Loviisa and Porvoo. So now, in Porvoo you will find many private places to stay, following international trends, not only in the centre of Porvoo, but also in the country and the archipelago. Now visitors can really get close up to the local scene. In addition, we hope that in summer 2015 there will be even more POP-UP entrepreneurs, as the feedback has been very positive, from clients and from the POP-UP B&B hosts as well.

CONFERENCES AND FUNCTIONS

Art Factory

Conference services with a difference Why not charter a boat and hold your conference at sea! For example, yachts Alexandra and Mirelle can be chartered for functions. Meetings and events in shiny, modern premises, in the heart of the countryside, in charming old buildings, in manor house or cottage environments, all these can be successfully arranged in Porvoo! We have held meetings and events in different parts Porvoo, and the choice of venue depends on the meeting’s objectives. Porvoo offers a good range of alternatives, and the flexibility and individual approach of service providers are important elements for the success of an event. In addition to the venue, the catering at our meetings has also received praise. By making use of versatile auxiliary services the events can be personalised and made memorable for participants.

We have used the Art Factory successfully for meetings, seminars and product launches, as there is enough room to move in large, space-consuming refrigeration appliances for presentations. We have used the Avanti Hall for our staff functions. Our foreign guests are especially impressed by Haikko Manor’s seaside location, and Old Porvoo’s idyllic buildings have also provided a backdrop for many functions. In the immediate vicinity of Porvoo there are several venues with an individual touch, such as Nybergs Varpet, Porvoon Merisavu, Hommanäs and Kannonnokka, where we have organised many successful events.

SUMMER GUESTS

We recommend Porvoo

“Porvoo has a long history. We had also heard about the traditional architecture and how friendly the local people are.” -How does it feel now that you have got to know the town?

“Porvoo is even better than we expected. It’s peaceful, it’s easy to get around and find places, and it’s also suitable for a longer stay. We’ll be delighted to come again!”

Ye & Yunheng, Guangzhou, China

“I live 10 minutes from Versailles in France. I saw a picture of the red shore warehouses on the Internet and decided I had to come to Porvoo to see them!” I’ve spent one night here as a couch surfer and yesterday I walked all round the town. There was a wedding in the Cathedral, so I couldn’t get in. It’s funny how you always want to visit churches when you’re abroad, even though you seldom go into a church at home…”

Alice, France

Shirley grew up in Michigan and she learned Finnish because there were so many Finns living in the area in those days. “It was like a Little Finland,” she tells us. At the age of 19 she moved away and there was no one to speak Finnish to. CDs and books helped, but she longed to speak Finnish face to face with someone. Years later she heard someone in the street speaking English in a familiar way: “I recognized the accent and I was so thrilled I almost grabbed hold of her!” Shirley and the woman in the street became friends and she is here meeting her friend and practising her Finnish language skills. I have relatives in Lapua, and I’m so pleased that I will be meeting them too!”

Shirley, Chicago, USA

“Porvoo is really different compared to other Finnish towns. Parts of Porvoo reminded us of Venice, another part of Austria, another of a small town in southern Europe. At times it even seems as if you were in a mediaeval town.”

Natasha, Ljonja, Nastja, Ludmila & Alisa, Russia

“We knew what we wanted to do in Porvoo even before we came here. We saw an ad on the Internet about renting bikes. Great, we thought.”. – How does it feel after 6 hours of cycling?

“Fantastic! Haikko Manor was such a beautiful place. We like the fact that there are separate cycle paths here in Finland. In Norway you are cycling in among the cars. We definitely recommend renting a bike in Porvoo!”

“We’ve heard a lot of positive things about Porvoo and the Porvoo archipelago. We’ve also heard a lot about Pellinki and the evening market there. Now we spent a night at the Kokonniemi campsite and from here we’re going on by car to the Porvoo archipelago.”

Wendy, Elisa & Oona, Valkeakoski
