THE HOUSE OF THE
T
Potter
he House of the Potter opened in September, 1975 after William (Bill) Kirner, a native of Fanwood, New Jersey, converted the White Swan tavern into a Pottery Studio and Gallery. A degree in Art Education from West Virginia Wesleyan College, followed by an apprenticeship with potter, Lee Magdanz, spearheaded Bill’s desire to dedicate his passion to become a full time artist. He has continued since then to refine his stoneware and porcelain pottery and his love of painting Oils and Watercolors. The creative process has always been an intriguing pursuit that has led to the recording of original piano and guitar compositions. The Gallery has provided an excellent outlet for his personal expression to flourish. Music CDs now share the spotlight for Bill’s artistic endeavors. Friends and musicians, Jerry Funk and Ray Reade, have joined forces to create additional CDs with Funk-Kirner-Reade contemporary instrumentals. Functional wheel thrown pottery receive the artist’s touch with hand painted dogwood blossoms, a grape motif or other attractive glaze combinations. Whimsical castles, chess sets and decorative sculptures are also created in a distinctive and unique style. Fired to 2380 degrees in a gas kiln, the pieces are all lead free, oven proof, dishwasher and microwave safe. The local region, nature and architecture comprise the major compositions of William Kirner’s paintings. A keen sense of design and fresh use of pigments are evident in the artwork that includes Limited Edition Prints of selected original watercolors. The House of the Potter features the work of over 50 artists and craftspeople from the U.S. and Canada. Our discerning taste dictates the fine quality of items that we showcase. Custom framing is available for most artwork including photography and needlework. We provide design consultations to meet a variety of home and business decors. Chautauqua County
CRAFT BEVERAGE, WINE, AND ECOTOURISM MARKETING CAMPAIGN
OBJECTIVE The Chautauqua County Partnership for Economic Growth (CCPEG) is soliciting proposals from qualified marketing professionals to create a robust marketing strategy and campaign to promote the craft beverage and wine industries within Chautauqua County, New York while highlighting the ecotourism opportunities. The campaign will build on the successes and existence of cultural tourism and agritourism. BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND PURPOSE Chautauqua County is the western-most county in New York State. The County is rich in natural assets, including five (5) lakes, more than 20,000 acres of State and County forest lands, more than 400 miles of groomed and marked snowmobile trails, the most miles of single track groomed fat bike trails in New York State, and hundreds of miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, just to name a few. It is also home to the renowned Chautauqua Institution, Robert H. Jackson Center, Roger Tory Peterson Institute, and the National Comedy Center. Chautauqua County possesses very strong manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism sectors, with the tourism sector showing the greatest expansion year-after-year. Unique to the county is cultural tourism, which the visitor’s essential motivation is to learn, discover, and consume the tangible and intangible attractions/products, which has more than a 150 year history. In the late 1800’s, people came to the hotels, cottages, and religious encampments dotting the shores of Chautauqua Lake, Findley Lake, and Cassadaga Lake. Chautauqua Institution and Lily Dale have retained historic architecture and their missions’ to continue to offer summer programming based on artistic, intellectual, and spiritual growth. Globally, the agritourism market size continues to expand and our county is well positioned. The pastoral landscape can be found within the rolling hills between dense forests, but a significant amount can be enjoyed along the 50 miles of Lake Erie shoreline. There are hands-on farm experiences, vineyard tours, educational foraging programs, farm to table dining, and farm bed and breakfasts. The microclimate along the lake and the rich soil create an ideal terroir or growing conditions for fruit trees and grapes. Since the 1800’s, table grapes have been grown in the region. Welch’s first headquarters was located in the County in Westfield, NY. In 2013, the Grape Discovery Center was opened as the official Visitor’s Center for the Lake Erie Concord Grape Belt, which has been designated a New York State Heritage Area. last decade, farmers and brewers are growing more and more hops. There are twenty (20) wineries that make up the Lake Erie Wine Country, a member based organization that promotes the wineries and wine related events. Thirteen (13) of them are located in Pennsylvania and nine (9) of them are located in Chautauqua County, New York. A few of the wineries have added breweries and distilleries. In 2015, one winery, Mazza Chautauqua Cellars created Five & 20 Spirits & Brewery and became New York State’s first combination winery, brewery & distillery, and dubbed “The Westfield Wonder”. There are five (5) breweries that have a presence in Chautauqua County. The rural setting that continues to see an increase in tourism fosters a market for farm breweries, some of which have outdoor stages to host live music.

NY’S OLDEST ESTATE WINERY, INNOVATIVE AND
High-Quality Wines
J
ohnson Estate’s Tasting Room, located in a 1920s apple cold-storage building built by the first generation of Johnsons; was renovated to provide a special view, through a ceiling-high glass wall, to some of the stainless-steel tanks used in our wine production. That glass wall provides the framework for the story of Johnson Estate which includes a rich authentic heritage, starting with the first generation, to the current innovative and consistently high-quality wines (and service) by the third generation of Johnsons and their team. The History of Johnson Estate, Remember the Number Three The history of Johnson Estate Winery is a story of threes; three generations, three buildings and three types of grapes. In the late 1800s, an English orphan named Frederick Johnson immigrated to Western Canada from England as a teenager. In 1896 he found his way to Cornell University to study entomology and later worked for the Department of Agriculture. In 1911, Johnson purchased a 1820s home and farm in Westfield, New York and planted fruit orchards as well as Concord and Niagara vineyards. According to family lore, Johnson started making wine in the basement of the farmhouse during Prohibition. In 1920, he built an apple cold storage facility that now houses the winery’s tasting room. Second-generation family member, Frederick Spencer Johnson, grew up on the farm and served in World War II as a naval aviator, graduated from Cornell University in 1946, and then raised his family overseas while working for the Rockefellers’ agricultural endeavors in Latin America. He returned to the farm in 1960 after his father died, removed the aging fruit orchards, and planted the first wine grapes in Western New York. Like Dr. Frank in the Finger Lakes, Frederick Johnson was the pioneer in WNY who understood that its special Germanic microclimate was excellent for wine grapes. He opened the winery in 1961 in his father’s apple cold storage building becoming the state’s oldest estate winery, supported NYS’s Farm Winery Act passed in 1976, and built a new tank building in the early ‘80s.
Upon his death in 1998, the third generation of Johnsons, Frederick Jr., Elizabeth and Anthony, all Cornell graduates, inherited the farm. They planted new Riesling vineyards and constructed a finished goods warehouse. In early 2011, Frederick Johnson Jr., with his wife Jennifer, purchased his siblings’ interests in the farm and winery. They completed a renovation of the tasting room later than year, just in time for the celebration of the winery’s 50th anniversary. The farm, owned by the same family for over one-hundred years, was awarded a Century Farm designation from the New York State Agricultural Society in 2018. From Bud to Bottle – Estate-Grown Grapes to Award-Winning Wines The team at Johnson Estate, led by Owners Fred and Jennifer Johnson and Winemaker Jeff Murphy, pays attention to all of the right details, from “bud to bottle”. The winery, celebrating its 62nd year in 2023, produces, innovative, and high-quality award-winning wines - over forty vintages, from dry to sweet, made from the thirteen varieties of grapes grown on 110 acres of Estate vineyards. These include European Classics such as Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay, now grown on the Estate, as well as dry rosés, fortified and ice wines. May Wine – A Creative Example – New Vintage This Week Jeff Murphy has been Johnson Estate’s Winemaker for over twenty years during which time he has introduced over a dozen award-winning wines to the Estate’s portfolio. He has a degree from Pennsylvania State University in Food Science and Enology and prior to joining Johnson Estate, had worked at Glenora Wine Cellars and two other New York wineries. In a terroir which excels in growing Germanic varieties, Jeff has a palate and preference for making wines which accentuate the estate-grown grapes’ best attributes. He is inspired by German food and wine culture to the produce European and Germanic style wines which best express our “terroir”. There is no better example that our sparkling Vidal Blanc May Wine, which is infused with dried sweet woodruff. This wine, inspired by Germany’s May Day celebrations, mimics their white wine punches, as a German friend said once – it’s “Mai Wein in a bottle”. The 2022 vintage will be released this week! Hospitality - Indoors & Out: Have You Been to FLIGHT? At Johnson Estate, the hospitality of our staff matches the quality of our wines. The Tasting Room at Johnson Estate is opened every day, year-round, except for the four major holidays. In addition, the winery opened a new outdoor tasting venue in 2021, which we call FLIGHT. It is open from Memorial Day to Columbus Day and is named FLIGHT to honor of the founder’s love of planes AND to remind you that we serve “flights of wine” as well as cheese and charcuterie boards – large enough to be your lunch. To take advantage of the Estate’s vineyards and natural beauty, we also offer a number of “experiences” to be enjoyed – including vineyard walks (guided or self-guided), winemakers’ dinners, and harvest happenings. We hope that you can join us. More information is available on our website, www.JohnsonWinery.com.

n 2014, retired educator, inspired creator and experienced director Rick Mascaro returned from Anderson, South Carolina, to his native home Westfield, NY. With hope in his heart and a vision in his mind, he set out to fulfill a cherished dream: a multifaceted arts center in his hometown. Gathering a group of like minded friends, Mascaro assembled a board of directors, applied for 501c3 status and launched an effort which has resulted in today’s vibrant and varied Lake Shore Center for the Arts. Initially, having no permanent base, but wanting their entrance to the community to be through theater, the acting troupe performed in spaces from the local Moose Club dining room to the Octagon Gallery of Patterson Library, from a Lake Erie beach pavilion to the stunning sanctuary of Westfield’s First Presbyterian Church. Happily, the relationship with that church led to a win-win. The church needed a tenant to rent some unused spaces and the arts group needed a home. Further impetus for the move came with a September, 2016, grant of $34,000 from the Peter Brand Foundation. November 3, 2016, marked the first board meeting in the group’s newly acquired space on the third level of the church, located at 49 South Portage St., right across the street from Patterson Library. From that date to the present, board directors and volunteers gradually have transformed several classrooms and spaces into a range of facilities. The Jacqueline Phillips Theater, a blackbox venue, includes a stage and backstage space, tiered seating for 30+ patrons and a versatile lighting and sound system. Art is the focus of the Brenda Eno Gallery, which also flows up the stairs, into the hallway and other spaces such as the Bill Ross Recital Hall which also serves as a music performance area. The gallery is open for visitors every Saturday, 12-3 p.m. The Lorna B. Penny Suite, once the site of Scout meetings and projects has been transformed into an elegant and welcoming library, conference and green room. It’s in those commodious surroundings that our Writers’ Group meets Wednesday evenings, 7-8:30 p.m. Of special interest to many members is the amazing Innovation Studio, a room which draws “techies” and neophytes alike to attend classes or to use Open Studio times to restore photos, create performance based animations or screenwrite using Final Draft 12. The opportunities are endless. Photographers love it! A scenery creation and equipment storage area, a costume room and an area for hands-on workshops round out the arts center. Since its inception, the group has presented many well established works: TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, ELEEMOSYNARY, LOVE LETTERS, IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE, to name just a few. This year, LSCFTA will see the culmination of their first Juice Box Organic One Act Play Competition, another of Executive Director Rick Mascaro’s visions. The invitation to participate brought in an astounding close to 200 entries! From there, a panel of readers narrowed the field to the top twenty, all of which have been vocally recorded by our Readers Theater Ensemble and are available for listening through a link at our website lakeshorecenterforthearts.com. Another judging panel now has narrowed the choice to the top five comedies and the top five dramas which will be staged May 26-28 in our theater. Go to our website for full details. Lake Shore Center for the Arts is proud to be a colorful and strong fiber in the fabric of Westfield. We work everyday to fulfill our mission statement, “to provide innovative, relevant, and diverse cultural arts and experiences that both reflect and expand the community’s needs via visual, digital and live performing arts events, to become a creative force and educational resource for Western New York and the entire lake shore region, and to harness the economic vitality of the arts to grow local economy.

N
earby, but a world away, the Allegheny National Forest Region is a great destination for exploring nature, participating in hiking, biking and mountain biking adventures, learning local history along the collectible pin trail, or enjoying rest and relaxation in a cabin or campsite along the shoreline of the Allegheny Reservoir. Designated a National Forest on September 24, 1923, this year marks 100 years of preserving and managing this massive land mass, 414,029 acres, for conservation and public recreation. Special events planned to mark this important 100-year milestone are the Centennial Geo-Trail, the ANF’s 100-mile trail challenge, and a monthly list of events such as the Full Moon Walk. The Full Moon Walk is free ranger-led interpretive night sky program on Friday, April 14, 2023, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Kinzua Beach, off St. Route 59, just north of Kane, PA. The closest lodging will be in the cabins or campsites at Red Bridge Campground. Other nearby lodging choices include the historic Kane Manor Inn, Kane Tourist Home & Motor Inn, and a variety of Airbnbs. The main celebratory event will be held at Twin Lakes in the ANF. This family friendly event will be on September 24, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information on ANF Centennial events and the history of the Forest, visit: https://www.fs.usda.gov/allegheny. The Forest offers 14 campgrounds, with more than 1,000 sites for developed recreation, cabin rentals, and a marina. The Allegheny Reservoir offers fishing, kayaking, and canoeing along with motorized boating. The Kinzua Wolf Run Marina is a full-service marina, with a seasonal restaurant. Allegheny Site Management offers kayaks, canoes, and paddle boats for rent at Willow Bay Recreation Area. Fin & Fly Adventures offers fishing guide services. The 2nd Kinzua Cup Walleye Tournament, sponsored by the Willow Creek Sportsman’s Club will be on May 20 & 21, 2023. The trail systems in the ANF Region provide a wide variety of opportunities to get outside and enjoy nature. In all, there are over 600 miles of four-season trails in the region. History lovers will enjoy exploring the McKean County Historic Collectible Pin
Trail which offers a different collectible pin at 10 historic sites within McKean County. Two local trails offer picture-perfect wooden covered bridges. Marilla Bridges Trail, a 1-mile loop trail, features a covered wooden bridge across the spillway of Marilla Reservoir. A second wooden bridge is located on the Kinzua Valley Trail, a 10.5-mile trail from Red Bridge Campground, past the village of Westline, to Rt. 219. Mountain bikers will enjoy Morrison Trail, a 10.8- mile loop trail through open hardwoods and large rock formations. The Trails at Jakes Rocks offer mountain bikers a wide degree of challenges, from gentler loops to the one-way, epic Blacksnake gravity trail. The 2023 Pennsylvania Trail of the Year is the 7.8- mile section of the Knox & Kane Rail Trail which runs from the Kinzua Bridge State Park to Mt. Jewett, PA. This trail connects to the #1 State Park of the Year, as voted on by TripAdvisor, the Kinzua Bridge State Park, home of the awesome Kinzua Sky Walk. Contemporary Glass Art with Traditional Glass Concepts
Nature has always been the subject of my pieces; whether it is symbolized or implied, natural components will always be present. I believe nature provides the most intriguing element of design through form, structure and color. I try to interpret what I see and feel in this most captivating medium of glass. A stained glass window can be a wall of light that changes throughout the hours of the day following the strength and direction of the sun. As light changes so does the character of the stained glass. The effect of light on and through glass has no parallel. Glass is thrilling to work with and at my Living Glass Studio I rely on one fact when designing; The interaction of light, color and texture produce an energy that seem to enhance ones imagination and so anything is possible!” -Denise Williams-Stebbins, Artist
(716) 269-8977 LivingGlassGallery.com Stained Glass Basics It is true that stained glass measures its true power against the lighted sky. But this is not a limiting factor. During the day, stained glass windows come alive with brilliant colors, but as daylight changes so does the character of the stained glass. Everyone has their favorite time of day to view a particular window. Frank Lloyd Wright used the term “organic architecture” in which he designed his structures – as if they emerged from their surroundings. His windows also framed nature using the natucontinued on page 38

ral scenery outside along with his geometric window design. The Living Glass Studio has adopted a similar theory behind its designs. Living Glass windows not only use nature outside their windows but incorporate nature into their windows as well. Shells, Stones flowers, fibers and beach glass are used to accent designs. Lead lines are not just to support the glass but are incorporated as part of the design as well. The harmony between line and light is evident in every Living Glass piece. Once the sun goes down, the Living Glass window displays a different aspect. Special features with glass texture, attention to glass color, finishing details to the lead and solder, transform the window into an art form in itself. Although I have worked in several mediums, glass has become my favorite and I have stuck with it faithfully for the past 30 years. Through my business Living Glass, I offer personalized designs for windows in the kitchen, bathroom, living room, entrance way or any other area of the home. My work is an unusual technique of combining contemporary art with traditional glass concepts. I invite you to stop into the Living Glass Gallery to enjoy the work produced in my studio as well as the work of several other local artists. It truly is the most charming shop in Chautauqua County! Making Waves with our Pennsylvania Wines Driftwood Wine Cellars is a quaint, family-owned winery and vineyard located near the shores of Lake Erie in North East, Pennsylvania. Driftwood Wine Cellars offers a collection of choice wines from our small vineyard in North East, PA. “If you grew up with my brothers, you’d understand…” our vintner would say when people asked how he got into making wine. But what started as a hobby has turned into a passion for making great tasting unpretentious and fun wine. Like many people that live in the country we love to try new things and see what happens. But like the air fryer or instant pot we no longer use (and glam metal) some things sound better in our heads. Instead, we’ve learned to trust our farmers to take the best local varieties to the next level with a bit of fun and see where that road leads. Not content to just satisfy our palate’s varietals locally though we source varietals from far reaching grape regions around the world. Creating unique blends that are sure to spark your imagination and enhance your appreciation for great local wines. So, sit back and relax with a glass and let our wines take your sense through a new memorable experience or harken back a memory from good times you want to have again. Our goal is to create a place close to home where you can escape the daily grind and enjoy our unique wines in a comfortable setting with friends and family. So, check out our new tasting room in Downtown North East with as many friends as you want to bring or make there. We’re happy to help you make all the Pour Decisions you can handle! See you soon.

Willow CREEK WINERY W
illow Creek Winery is a proud member of the Lake Erie Wine Country Wine Trail. The Winery was established in 1999 by Jim Emerson in his garage. Mr. Emerson was a teacher for Lake Shore Central School. He was a homemade wine maker for 20 years. His hobby turned into a dream. Jim started a wine making club in 1992 which grew to 40 members. In 1999 he retired from teaching. Together with 15 fellow winemakers, Willow Creek Winery was born. Unfortunately, in 2000 Mr. Emerson unexpectedly passed away. Upon his passing, Mr. Doug Metzger took over as president. Mr. Metzger renovated the grounds adding in a beautiful pond, accompanied with a gazebo. In, 2012 Doug completely remodeled the tasting room/ retail store, opening it up to one amazing space. Upon doing so Mr. Metzger came across the original wood beams from the 1800’s that he fell in love with and proudly restored to their original form, giving the room a wonderful rustic feel. In 2016 as Doug retired his sister-law and niece “Carolanne and Jessica Metzger” took over the winery.
Since opening, Willow Creek Winery has always been dedicated to producing some of the finest wines that WNY has to offer, all hand crafted on site. She thinks about the women and their families who lived in the beautiful home and worked their farms with no indoor plumbing or electricity and wonders what their lives were like.
An open staircase decorated with dental crown molding work, is located inside the double front doors. Several bedrooms with fireplaces are found on the second level. A third-floor ballroom is often used to take pictures because of lighting and unique windows. Guests who climb the stairs to the cupola see the grounds from a very different perspective and may see the deer and turkey that sometimes roam below.
he RED (Retreat Event Destination) House in Cassadaga is a living piece of Chautauqua County’s past.
“I always feel shear relaxation and comfort when I come onto the property. The area I get the most internal feeling is when I cross the threshold into the kitchen,” says Nancy, the current owner. “I just wish the building could talk and I could learn more.”
The elegant 19th century Victorian manor, with seven fireplaces, was built by the Denny Family in 1860. It is a very well preserved example of the detailed structures of the time with transom windows, bay windows and crafted hardwood floors. Over the years, the house has been mentioned in several books and publications, such as Nineteenth Century Houses in Western New York, In The Rear Window and The Sittin’ Stone. These books, as well as articles, letters, and old photos are on display in the parlor for visitors to peruse. Over the years the house has served many purposes. At one time it was the Homecroft Inn and at another it was connected to the Lily Dale Sanitarium. Also in it’s past it served as a reflection room and played an important
The most popular use of the manor today is for the bride and groom to get ready on their big day, with the bride and her attendants using the front of the house and the groom and groomsmen using two rooms in the rear of the house that used to be the quarters for the hired help. There is a front and back staircase, so the groom doesn’t accidentally see his bride before the ceremony. Since 2022 the manor is also available for overnight stays for those visiting the area The barn is the reception hot spot and if inclement weather brings the ceremony indoors if is a beautiful back drop for the ceremony. It is the perfect setting for formal or informal celebrations. The current barn was built in 1910, after the first one burned. It was built from blocks made by the Cassadaga Block Company which were made from gravel from Cassadaga Lake. The beams are built with peg construction and give a cathedral like feeling to the second floor. The original elevator which utilizes a pulley system is a carryover from the old barn. Chandeliers light both floors. A covered open loft in the back brings in the outdoors through the big swing doors that mirror those in the front of the barn.

With the amazing manor and rustic barn the property is a great mix of the eloquence and casual comfort to the setting that is nestled on six parklike acres framed by deep woods. They have been the magical backdrop for a decade of wedding ceremonies and receptions. Thomas Annear Adventure meets quiet contemplation in my paintings. From the snow capped peaks of the Tetons to the old growth forests of Western New York his paintings capture the grandeur and beauty of the American landscape. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, my career has shifted over the years from political and abstract pieces to paintings that focus on contemporary uses of the environment. For nearly twenty years, I have sought to capture the unique geography, weather patterns, and natural resources of Western New York through my plein air paintings. Patrick Stokes I consider myself a portrait photographer whether my subject is a person or a landscape and I approach both with wonder, curiosity, and awe. I started my photographic journey in a dark room at 14 and over the years drifted in and out of capturing images over the years. Being a tech fan, I picked up my first digital camera in 2001 and progressively began to grow my passion for capturing images anew. With the advent of cell phone cameras and computational imagery I took the leap continued on page 51

into fine art photography with the acquisition of state-of-the-art lenses and cameras. Photography to me is time traveling and as an avid traveler and sci-fi enthusiast I hope someday a millennium from now someone will discover one of my images and be transported back in time. Please follow my explorations on Instagram or visit my website. Tom Janik Tom is a retired chemistry professor. Along with his career in chemistry, Tom has had a lifelong interest in photography starting at the age of 11 with a Brownie camera. Tom’s photography is centered on landscapes and the natural world. Photography has the special quality of extracting, revealing and recording the beauty that oftentimes goes unnoticed. Tom is inspired by many great landscape photographers such as Elliot Porter, but also by photographers whose images have a graphic art quality, e.g., Pete Turner. Tom has a recent book of Lake Erie photographs available to see and/or purchase. Hub 2. Keith Callen Studio 232 Liberty St., Fredonia • 505-603-0258 Keith Callen The beauty and solace of texture and light inspires me to recreate joyous experiences of nature and humanity. Through our challenges and delights, our species grows with greater understanding and appreciation of the divine spark within us. In my work, I explore how pattern and color create visual dimension and an emotional response that is activating and illuminating. Through that response I present allegory and stories about the human experience in the small yet significant experiences of our daily lives. Whether in my hand-woven home décor or in my figurative painting, I seek to share my experience of the divine. Hub 3. Kniti Griti Works 42 Rosalyn Ct., Fredonia • 716-672-4275 Seri Beeson As long as I can remember, I’ve been collecting and making things. My training is informal and ongoing, with handmade items created from bits of fabric, glass, and stone. COSO Studios focuses on casual, everyday objects of adornment and holding. Current fixations are hand-crocheted jewelry with “found” pottery, glass, and stone and an assortment of handmade crossbody bags from upholstery fabrics. Just as birds collect fantastical found treasures, my goal is to create items you will enjoy gathering for your own personal collection or share with those you love. Marcia Merrins Marcia sculpts a wonderful menagerie of wood fired and raku animal pieces, from hippos to elephants, that are fun and collectible. This Indian Rhino was accepted into the 2021 Spring Show at the Erie Art Museum. Marcia also creates signature pieces that are quirky themed, including bright and sassy “footed bowls”. She is drawn to whimsy and her work reflects what she finds in contemporary footwear and clothing. Fairy houses are new in the studio and adorable. When you make something with your hands, you put your heart into it too. Those who experience your creation will feel the tug on their own heart – a strange and very real phenomenon. Nancy Nixon Ensign Experiencing isolation and solitude during the pandemic of 2020, I find the appeal of assemblage onto sparse landscapes a way to convey my story to the viewer. Social distancing provides a reflection of my inner voice not spoken. Creative studio work is appetizing for the introverted. The historic and sometimes abandoned homes of Chautauqua County provide untamed architectural landscapes that call to be painted into relevance with isolated figures. Susan Forrester-Mackay
I am a child of the sixties when beauty, love and peace were going to change the world. I create artwork because the beauty of the process is the best mind- altering state I have ever known. The need to touch, feel, respond and communicate human emotions within the landscape of the human form is enormous. The subject of human beings and their interactions is an endless source of fascination for me; hence, most of my work is figurative and evocative, focusing on the variety of everyday human gesture. Paula Coats (Labor Day Weekend Only) I am Paula Coats of pc:) pottery. I fashion decorative and functional pottery using primarily hand-building techniques. I am fascinated with adding texture to the pieces because of the beautiful ways they accept the glazes that I use. My functional pottery is fired in an electric kiln to cone 6 with lead-free glazes. This functional pottery is microwave and dishwasher safe. I do not have a website or a presence on Face Book, but you can contact me at joepaulac@roadrunner.com. Hub 4. Within both of these roles, Jessie works to bring quality art experiences to as many populations as possible within the region. Her pots are made with the intention to bring beauty and joy to the everyday moments of living. Sherry Nugent I am the creator at Wildfire Pottery. By trade, I am a restaurateur and chef, so I naturally gravitate towards kitchenware. I have a collection of spices, procured from my travels, which inspire me to create dishes that deserve a beautiful vessel for serving. Much like food, clay is a medium that I can create anything my imagination desires. Sarah Zielonka Sarah Zielonka is a ceramic artist creating functional stoneware pottery in North Evans, New York. After earning a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Ceramics at Alfred University in 1991, she has honed her craft, producing beautiful handmade objects that speak directly to the user through everyday interaction. With respect for traditional aesthetics, her goal is to employ the medium’s infinite flexibility to translate a story, a memory or feelings of joy, whimsy and play. Currently, she creates wheel thrown and hand built objects, then experiments with a variety of high firing techniques including wood, soda, gas and electric. Lisa Ann Eppolito I make functional, wood and soda-fired pottery. There are central understandings about process and environment, I place in the objects I make. I create vessels that consider the wood-firing process. Firing pottery in a wood kiln produces distinctive outcomes, both controlled and uncontrolled. I acknowledge the atmosphere of the kiln, using glazes and flashing slips that interact with melting wood ash. Wood ash vitrifies and produces a natural glaze. Therefore, my forms intend to encourage subtleties such as catching wood ash deposits, and encouraging flashing. I observe how the vessel and flame speak to one another, capturing information on the surface. Hub 5. Living Glass Art Gallery 71 E. There is a developing series of monochromatic pastel/charcoal landscapes on paper. There is also an ongoing series of fanciful figures in motion (pastel and acrylic). I’ve also pulled up a number of older, unfinished (unresolved) pieces out of my past and am attempting to rework them. It’s very interesting to pick up a piece put to the side years ago and revisit my thought processes at the time. DRINKING WINE AND FELINE FINE AT THE
Erie Zoo M
any of us have dreamed of a day when you could sip on a glass of merlot and gaze into the eyes of a lion, but now that the Erie Zoo is hosting its first-ever 21+ wine-tasting event, Felines and Wines, dreams are actually coming true. Our local, nonprofit, Erie Zoo debuted this fundraising event in August 2022, with an evening full of local wine and mead tastings, delicious food truck offerings, live music, and big cat training demonstrations. “The Erie Zoo is always looking for new and exciting ways to reach animal lovers of all ages and after several years of hosting our successful beer fest, Lions, Tigers, and Beers (held on October 7th, 2023) we were looking to bring the delights of wine tasting to zoo grounds.” said Kylie Kaspick (Erie Zoo Marketing and Events Assistant) “We wanted to offer the Erie community a fun and unique wine tasting event, but it was also important for us to work in our mission of wildlife education and conservation. We saw the opportunity to integrate the celebration of International Cat Day (August 8th,2023) by incorporating it into the event and highlighting the many big cats that call the Erie Zoo home”.
ries for their second year hosting the event! In addition to the wineries, they are looking to offer samplings from local distilleries, as well as, give the attendees the opportunity to shop local and regional small businesses. Additionally, this year they are planning to offer exclusive Erie Zoo wine-o merchandise which is guaranteed to be both full of puns and purrfect for wine or cat lovers.
Many Erie community members don’t find themselves at the zoo beyond the years their children or grandchildren are exploring it. However, wildlife education and conservation consciousness can be celebrated and explored by all ages, since we all share the planet with these amazing animals! In an effort to bridge this gap, the Erie Zoo event team has been working to find new and creative ways for adults to experience the zoo. Beyond Felines and Wines, the Erie Zoo offers two other adult-only fundraisers throughout the year; The Mane Event kicks off the zoo’s fundraising season on June 24th, 2023 with a high-end event full of live music, local “grazing stations”, libations, animal encounters, and a bountiful silent auction. As previously mentioned, the zoo also hosts an annual beer Felines and Wines will be held this year on Friday, August 11th, fest fundraiser, Lions, Tigers, and Beers, in October where again from 6 PM-9 PM. The Erie Zoo event team shared that they attendees can enjoy live music, local food trucks, beer tastings, have already nearly doubled the participating wineries/meade- and animal encounters. New this year, the zoo is hosting an event series, Movement Mondays, where on select Mondays, June through August, where four yoga instructors will lead attendees through a yoga class of their choosing. Vinyasa, Chair, Walking, and Slow & Mindful yoga will be offered throughout the series. Ticket sales for these sessions will launch on May 5th, 2023 and it is sure to be a wild experience.
