Locals searching fresh produce have plenty of options to Panama Rocks, located in Southern Chautauqua County, has been a popular destination for locals and tourists since 1885. When asked why people visit, owner Jonathan Weston said, “Panama Rocks is an amazing wonder of nature. The rocks are hidden in a lush forest and form seemingly endless passageways for guests to explore. Don’t just take my word for it,” Weston added. “We encourage potential guests to Google our reviews on TripAdvisor and Google.” Panama Rocks has been the No. 1 reviewer ranked attraction in Chautauqua County since 2011 on TripAdvisor and was rated the No. 1 reviewed
Panama Rocks
trail in New York State by the trip planning service Inspirock. In addition to being an amazing natural attraction, Panama Rocks offers glamping, camping, ax throwing, recreation hall rentals for events, and is host to two festivals.
Panama Rocks began offering glamping accommodations last year. They provide fully furnished, luxury tents with beds, linens, furniture and a mini-fridge for guests who want to camp in comfort. Each glamping campsite also includes a picnic table and firepit, and the park restrooms and bathhouse have been newly refurbished for guests.
“Every one of our guests who stayed with us last year said they enjoyed their stay and we are looking forward to another great summer this year,” said Weston.
Panama Rocks is now offering traditional “bring your own tent” camping sites for guests in 2024 as well. The Wild America Nature Festival will take place on July 27 and 28 and features a fine nature art & craft show, falconry and animal demonstrations, local food, music, and more. The Panama Rocks Foliage Festival will be on Oct. 5 and 6. Highlights include traditional crafts, music, food, and Fall and Halloween themed activities.
When asked about his hopes for this coming year, Weston said that he hopes to see lots of happy guests. “Panama Rocks is such a special place. We are often told by parents and grandparents that they love Panama Rocks because it is a place where they can explore together with their kids - and that the kids say it’s one of their favorite places to visit! We also hear from many people that they love the peace and tranquility of the park. Many find that the rocks have a powerful, even spiritual presence. We are grateful to be able to keep Panama Rocks open to the public and help people have fun and create wonderful memories while spending time in nature” added Weston.
Guests can learn more about Panama Rocks, make reservations, and see pictures and videos of the park on their website, www. PanamaRocks.com, and social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. n

“I’ll put you guys in the will,” Iglesias said. “And that’s a great thing too, because I have been struggling with a business manager, and going back and forth with a trust. It sucks when they tell you to write down a list of all your favorite people in order and figure out what’s going to happen when your gone because nobody wants to have those conversations. I can safely say this (The NCC) is definitely making the list.”
Joan Rivers’ 65,000 jokes will be arriving in 2025 to be part of her exhibit at NCC. Highlights from the collection include Rivers’ earliest hand-written jokes, personally compiled scrapbooks, never-before-heard autobiographical audio recordings, hundreds of pre-show preparatory notes, intimate correspondence with peers in entertainment, the guest books from her storied run as host of “The Late Show with Joan Rivers,” and a selection of the iconic gowns, boas, and jewelry that defined her inimitable style.
Other popular exhibits include Johnny Carson: The immersive Experience, and Carolines.
“The Johnny Carson: The Immersive Experience is presented in a theater environment where visitors are enveloped in the story. It takes you on a journey through the legacy of Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show,” Gunderson said.
The exhibit is designed to fully immerse visitors into Johnny Carson’s rich history on The Tonight Show. Gunderson said visitors will be surrounded by storytelling, media and sound. The exhibit features Jimmy Fallon as the hologram host, presenting visitors with a unique experience.

Glass Growers Gallery IS CELEBRATING 50 YEARS
Glass Growers Gallery (GGG), located in downtown Erie, Pa., is proudly celebrating 50 years in business. The gallery and gift shop represents over 90 regional artists and features another 100 artisans from across the country, creating a diverse and ever-changing selection of unique artwork and artisan goods. GGG offers paintings, photographs, pottery, glass, mosaics, jewelry, sculpture, and more. This milestone signifies a five decade legacy of cultural enrichment and artistic contributions to the Erie community.
Retrospective, International Images, Women in Transition, and Judy Chicago’s “The Birth Project” to name a few. GGG thrived while providing artistic encounters for the community and encouraging people to find their creative selves.
In 1974, Glass Growers Gallery (GGG) opened its doors at 2nd and Plum to showcase the work of John and Deborah Vahanian. They took flat sheets of glass and made 3D objects: geodesic domes and quartz crystal shapes that became part of kinetic sculpture, terrariums, light fixtures, and windows. The name “Glass Growers” has its roots in that process. Over time, the founders stopped “growing glass” themselves and expanded the gallery’s representation of regional fine art and professional American crafts in their bright, welcoming, plant-filled space.
In 1982, GGG relocated to a renovated church building at 701 Holland St. In the spacious 2 ½ story building, Deb Vahanian took the lead and began curating annual shows: Quilt, Watercolor, Kaleidoscope as well as other unique shows like the History of the Bicycle, the Carousel, Joseph Plavcan Student
In 1999, the Erie Art Museum planned to expand. GGG chose to be its neighbor by moving to its current location in the heart of downtown Erie, 10 E. 5th St. In September of 2020, Deborah Vahanian retired and GGG was purchased by its current owner, Emily Ernes. Two staff members, Noreen Finn and Susan Martin, stayed on and helped ensure a seamless transition with their combined 30 years of experience. The team continues to focus their attention on celebrating art and imagination and creating an inspiring space for the community. Prioritizing art experiences, GGG features rotating art exhibits in the main gallery every 6-8 weeks, hosts a variety of artist workshops, participates in seasonal gallery nights through the Erie Art Museum, and hosts boutique nights and other events with its shopping district neighbors.
GGG believes there is a special inherent quality found in original artwork and handcrafted artisan goods. These pieces are imbued with a sense of purpose and meaning from the careful attention provided during the artistic creation process, making them acquisitions to be treasured for years to come. GGG’s art and gift offerings and event calendars can be found online at https://www.glassgrowersgallery.com. Nationwide shipping is available (free on jewelry-only orders) and the staff is readily available for personalized shopping consultations at staff@ glassgrowersgallery.com or 814-453-3758.
If you haven’t visited downtown Erie recently, you’re in for a treat. The blocks surrounding GGG have been experiencing a renaissance. Only a short walk from the beautiful bayfront and filled with historical buildings and architecture, downtown Erie provides a special, multi-faceted experience for visitors to shop, dine, learn, and play. The team at Glass Growers Gallery hopes you will stop by and find joy and inspiration from our rich history, unique art offerings, and enthusiasm for the vibrant Erie community and its bright future.n

Farm Festival Plans FOR 56TH YEAR
There will be a Farm Festival this summer in Fredonia. The village has announced the event will take place in Barker Common and include music, food and craft vendors as well as community activities on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 24 and 25.
This year’s festival will be sponsored by DFT Communications, Kravitz Tree Service and Chautauqua County and organized by an independent committee co-chaired by Lauren Boyle and Greg Krauza.
“I am so proud and thankful for the way the community embraced this event,” village Mayor Michael Ferguson said.
“We are lucky to have so many individuals and businesses that reached out to me to offer their resources. I made it clear a few weeks ago we need this festival to continue and I am happy to say the Fredonia Farm Festival will be here for its 56th year.”
Boyle and Krauza say they are excited to lead the committee but were quick to point out this is a community event.
“We will need a lot of help and support from individuals and businesses throughout the community in order to have an event we are all proud of,” the chairs said.
The committee said it is grateful for all of the support it has already received and looks forward to maintaining the core events of past Farm Festivals while also planning to add some new ideas. Organizers say they are committed to the values of this festival, including honoring the farm community, growing the family atmosphere, highlighting local entertainers and of course, the parade.
The organizers and committee are thankful to have the support of Ferguson, the village of Fredonia, County Executive PJ Wendel and major sponsors.
The committee will be working closely with Festivals Fredonia and past organizers, Mark Mackey and Melissa Thompson, to ensure a smooth transition.
In the near future, information will be available for volunteer opportunities, becoming a food or craft vendor, and participating in the parade on the ‘Fredonia Farm Festival’ Facebook page and www.farmfestivalfredonia.com. If any businesses or individuals are interested in sponsoring an event or activity they can email farmfestivalfredonia@gmail.com. n

The Lawson Center CONTAINS FASCINATION
This enchanting museum started life as a boat livery in the 1880s, renting boats to the occasional tourist, but primarily to farmers and tradesmen who needed to transport their goods to market. In 1918, it was purchased by David Lawson, Sr. who operated it as a boat chandlery and automobile repair shop.
Dave Lawson Sr. made friends with Christopher Columbus Smith, founder of the Chris-Craft boat company and was one of the earliest dealers of these beautiful, mahogany boats. The building, known locally as “Lawson’s,” was owned and operated by members of the Lawson family until 2012 when it was converted to a museum and event center.
As a museum, The Lawson Center contains a fascinating display of antique and classic boats, an extensive collection of vintage, historical photographs, and a wonderful Kaptain Kid’s Korner on the lake level where children can play in a racing boat, build a balloon-powered boat of their own, and complete an activity book to earn a Junior Mate patch.
The all-volunteer staff also conducts local history programs for 4th grade students from many of the school districts around the lake. Adults will love the boat and motor displays and the interactive kiosks with information about the history of the Chautau-

The Comedy Center announced “Roastmaster General” himself Jeff Ross and Nailed It!’s Nicole Byer will headline the first two nights of the festival, now it its 34th year, at Jamestown’s Reg Lenna Center for the Arts. A third headliner, confirmed for August 3 at the Northwest Arena, will be announced in midJune.
Known for his numerous high-profile roast credits, including the most recent blockbuster Netflix “Roast of Tom Brady,” Jeff Ross shares a side of himself audiences don’t typically see in his new solo show on Friday, August 2. Nicole Byer takes the stage Thursday, August 1. Byer is one of the most distinctive voices in comedy today; widely known as the host of the Emmy-nominated Netflix reality-competition baking series Nailed It!, Byer has also won acclaim recently for her Netflix specials Big Beautiful Weirdo and Comedians of the World. “Jeff Ross has been a genre-defining artist for decades, both continuing and revolutionizing the art of insult comedy. Beyond the roasts, he’s just a fantastic stand-up comedian, an incredible writer, and a genuine champion of the art form’s past and present, which I love about him,” said Journey Gunderson, National Comedy Center Executive Director.
Visits to the National Comedy Center’s “Art of the Roast” exhibit, featuring the history of insult comedy from the Dean Martin and Friars’ Club Roasts, through Comedy Central Roasts, Roast Battle, and highlighting artists from Don Rickles to Jeff Ross, can also be reserved with museum admission before live shows during the festival.
“Nicole Byer is a fearless performer with a candid, razor sharp take that brings the audience along for a fun ride. I’m thrilled to have her in this lineup and welcome her to Jamestown, where fans from across the country celebrate this craft with our award-winning comedy museum visitor experience by day, and the best live comedy shows by night.”

Amish Trail PROVIDES SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
BY SARA HOLTHOUSE, sholthouse@post-journal.comCattaraugus County’s Amish Trail is made up of a variety of different Amish shops, existing throughout the Northwest part of the county.
While the Amish Trail is not an actual trail itself, it is made up of nearly 200 shops, according to Tourism Specialist Samantha Hayes. Maps and brochures can be sent via email for free and can be found at amishtrail.com.
Visiting reasons can differ depending on the person, Hayes said.
“Reasons to visit can be different depending on each person’s needs,” Hayes said. “People can come to leisurely shop and get things like homemade Amish donuts and gifts. People can visit different businesses if they need something like a garage built or kitchen cabinets. There’s something for everyone who wants to visit the Amish and find homemade high-quality items.”
Hayes added that there are probably some newer shops as well that are a part of the trail, and that there are also some that are more hands-on. Items to be found in shops can range from things such as custom oak furniture to chocolate to toys. She said at the shops, the Amish people who own and run them will interact with visitors and help make the visit more fun.
The Amish Trail is open throughout the summer, spring and fall seasons but Hayes said summer is usually the best time to visit because of there being more items available and more shops open.
“A lot of the shops are only open when they have items to offer,” Hayes said. “Some shops have vegetables that they only have during a specific season. So, you can come and follow the signs and pick up your produce, while also supporting the shops.”
The unofficial opening of the summer season for the trail was the Amish Relief Auction on May 25. This is an annual event that brings a lot of Amish people to one place to sell their handmade items. All the money collected goes towards helping children and families in the community. This event is always the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. More information on the Amish Relief Auction can be found on the Amish Trail website.
The Leon Historical Society offers custom design tours for everyone who visits the Amish Trail. Hayes said that to set up a tour a person would have to contact the society, and more information on that can be found on the Amish Trail website.
One of the most important things Hayes asks the public to remember when visiting the Amish Trail is to be aware of the culture and their surroundings.
“Do not take photos of the Amish, as it is against their culture to take photos,” Hayes said. “Be sure to take your time when traveling on the trail. Horses and buggies will be around so be aware of your surroundings and the traffic. There can also be children walking to and from school, so just take your time driving and be aware
your surroundings.”
Lake Erie Wine CONTINUES TO THRIVE
Lake Erie Wine Country is one of the highlights of Western New York. With vineyards prevalent throughout the region, nearly two dozen wineries offer a taste of what this area is all about.
Chautauqua County is the largest U.S. grape-cultivating region east of the Rockies and the largest global Concord grape growing region. Concord grapes are often used to produce jelly, jams and juices, along with wines.
According to the Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau, the Lake Erie Grape Belt features more than 30,000 vineyard acres along a 53-mile Wine Trail. From Silver Creek to Harborcreek, Pa., 21 wineries are spread throughout Chautauqua County and beyond to comprise Lake Erie Wine Country.
Sen. George Borrello noted this past October how the Trail “has really grown and matured over the last few years.” Senator Borrello highlights the region’s agricultural progress not only as a resident of Chautauqua County, but also as the grandson of grape farmers himself.
In the past year, major renovations have begun at two of the most established wineries in the region, Liberty Vineyards & Winery in Sheridan and 21 Brix Winery in Portland.
21 Brix is located on Route 20 in Portland, with a Pink Elephant statue out front you can’t miss. The winery is in the final stages of wrapping up a 6,400-square-foot expansion that includes a multi-purpose space for additional seating of approximately 100 enclosed seats during nice weather. The expansion also includes a full-scale kitchen, which will allow the winery to implement in a full food program for events and catering.
Kris Kane, Owner of 21 Brix Winery in Portland, claimed that his business sees 35,000-40,000 visitors each year because of its location on the Wine Trail. Kane’s parents, Mike and Marion Jordan, own Olde Chautauqua Farms, a third-generation farm that has grown grapes since the 1950s.
Less than 30 minutes away, on a straight shot down Route 20, is Liberty Vineyards & Winery in Sheridan, which began a renovation of its pavilion in early March. Liberty Vineyards & Winery
is a family-owned business that has operated as a winery since 2008. The grape-growing history of the site, however, dates back nearly 150 years. Liberty Vineyards & Winery also offers workshops for beginners to prepare charcuterie boards to take home and share with friends and family, as well as a Wine Club for customers to receive shipments of Liberty wines.
Willow Creek Winery, located in a historic farmhouse built in the 1800s in Silver Creek, is the furthest the trail goes to the east. Willow Creek’s four specialty chocolate wines set it apart from the others on the trail, aside from its location. However, just off the path of the Wine Trail is Merritt Winery, located in nearby Forestville. Merritt Winery is known for its “Slush Bus” that is often featured at local events to offer wine slushes.
The village of Westfield is known for the oldest Welch’s grape juice factory, so much so that grapes are even featured on the sign welcoming visitors to the village. From Portland on past the state line, vineyards are prevalent throughout, with three more wineries on the trail between Westfield and Ripley. Johnson Estate Winery, Noble Winery, and Mazza Chautauqua Cellars, also known as Five and 20 Spirits and Brewing, all tap in to the rich history of grape farming near the Barcelona Harbor.
More information about the Wine Trail is available online at lakeeriewinecountry.org or by calling (877) 326-6561. n
