Tour our historic station and view all the exhibits, from antique railroad lanterns to switch locks and even an old switch stand. Nostalgic original photographs depict an era of days gone by. Next, you pass our authentic ticket office, where the ticket master will be glad to sell you tickets for the day’s train trip. Tour our small gift shop and snack bar while waiting to board your train. With an “all aboard,” the whistle blows, and the whoosh of the air brakes releasing can be heard. Located on the shores of beautiful Chautauqua Lake, Midway State Park is a family treasure. Originally established in 1898 as a trolley park, Midway State Park is one of the oldest continually operating amusement parks in the nation. The first owners of the park constructed playing fields, tennis courts, bath houses and a dance hall to entice customers to ride the trolley on weekends. In 1915, a new building was constructed with a kitchen, a large dining room and space for dancing and roller skating. Today, this building is home to a museum, gift shop, concession stands and other facilities.
Midway State Park continues to offer the same family friendly atmosphere that visitors have come to love. Patrons can take a nostalgic ride on the vintage carousel or ferris wheel, play a game of mini golf, take a spin on the tilt-a whirl and ride the go-karts or watch their children enjoy themselves on the many kiddie rides. And, while some may prefer to relax while enjoying cotton candy, others can test their skills at classic midway arcade games.

GERRI BEGIER OwnerTHE FREDONIA JAZZ FESTIVAL RETURNING IN OCTOBER
The Fredonia Jazz Society has been presenting jazz concerts in the Fredonia/Dunkirk area for the past five years, including the wildly successful Jazz at Domus Fare and the 2021 Fredonia Jazz Festival. This Fall, on October 19-21, the Fredonia Jazz Festival returns with local, regional and leading national musicians performing a range of styles from Dixieland to modern classics and beyond. “Over the course of these three days, there will be literally something for everyone,” said Karl Boelter, President of the Society’s Board.
Boelter continued, “The dates for the festival are a little later in the season this year, so we’ve decided to hold all the events indoors — at Domus Fare, of course, but also on campus and at the venerable 1891 Fredonia Opera House.”
The Festival begins on Thursday night at Domus Fare with The Nick Finzer Quartet. This diverse group is comprised of leading NYC musicians and will perform two shows, one at 5:30 and another at 8:00. Domus Fare will be offering a menu of food and drink specially selected for this evening.
On Friday, the Festival moves to the university campus for performances by the Alumni Band, led by Craig Fattey (’74), and the Fredonia Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Professor Nick Weiser.
Saturday, October 21, is a big day at the Opera House. It begins with an “Afternoon Showcase” of four different styles, starting at noon with some Dixieland by the Morgan Street Stompers from Buffalo followed by a solo piano performance by Pittsburgh’s Deanna Witkowski in a tribute to Mary Lou Williams. It concludes with Dave Golando in a saxophone feature called SaxTime and finally the soul-oriented David Jonathan and Inner City Bedlam. All of these performances can be accessed on a single ticket.
The day culminates in a headlining performance by one of today’s most creative and skilled jazz singers — Nicole Zuraitis (Zer-eye-tiss). The Nick Weiser Sextet will open this show, Pianist and vocalist Nicole Zuraitis will take the stage in this 7:00 pm show with her stellar quartet of musicians from New York City. “A heart full of soul and a voice full of sunshine,” writes All About Jazz. Indeed, Nicole is a rare singer, able to express a song with elegance and finesse, and then turn around to deliver the next with roof-raising passion. Backing her will be Idan Morim on guitar, Sam Weber on bass, and Dan Pugach, drums. Zuraitis and Pugach are a creative team that has been GRAMMY-nominated for their insightful and compelling songs and arrangements.
Downbeat Magazine exclaims,“Zuraitis showcases superb songcraft.” Broadway World states that she performs“effectively, effortlessly, and oh-so-enjoyably…. an artist this affable deserves as big an audience in her corner as possible — she is simply that good.”
Nicole Zuraitis has
established herself as an undeniable force in jazz. Her effervescent personality and boundless enthusiasm thrill her audiences. She regularly headlines at major NYC jazz venues like Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center, Birdland, the Blue Note, and the Carlyle, and has appeared as a featured soloist with several orchestras, including the Savannah Philharmonic and the Asheville Symphony.
Her career has taken her to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage

Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival, Savannah Jazz Festival, Saratoga Jazz Festival, Klaipeda Jazz (Lithuania), and Port Ferry Festival (Australia). Nicole is a proud faculty member at New York University and SUNY Purchase.
Her latest recording — “How Love Begins” — is coproduced with bassist and eight-time GRAMMY winner Christian McBride, and features all-original compositions and the talents of some of the jazz world’s best. In many of her songs, she invents strong lyrics with interesting twists and turns, like this one from her new release.
You’re only crazy in the good ways… …Like lighting fires in the wind. Your type of crazy feels like oil on water And that’s how love begins.
In 2019, Nicole was nominated for a GRAMMY alongside her husband, renowned drummer and bandleader Dan Pugach, for their arrangement and performance of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.”

Developed by the Concord Grape Belt Heritage Association, it seeks to be an experiential destination that supports and promotes the grape industry through sharing stories and engaging, educating and informing the public about all things grape. Admission to the Center is Free and Wi-Fi is available. Donations are graciously accepted.
The Concord Grape Belt is located along the southeastern shores of Lake Erie in western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania, and is the largest and oldest Concord grape growing region in the world. The Concord grape is native to North America, and was first selected and propagated from wild seedlings by Ephraim Bull in Concord, Massachusetts in 1849. It was brought to western New York in the 1870’s where climate, geography, and soils proved to be very suitable to its production.
Established in 2004, the Concord Grape Belt Heritage Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization of grape growers, juice processors and wineries, related grape industry businesses and regional organizations. Our mission is to encourage and support the grape and wine industries within the region, and to enhance the region’s quality of life. In May, 2013, the Grape Discovery Center was opened by the Heritage Association as a showcase for local grape-related products, and as a venue for sharing the rich history and culture of the region.
Tasting Bar - Enjoy a glass of wine or grape juice with friends in the Tasting Bar or on the Steve Baran Memorial Patio nestled beside a Concord vineyard. The Tasting Bar features local artisanal cheeses, cured meats, snacks, grape juice, and a weekly selection of wines from Lake Erie Wine Country Walk through the Star Family Exhibit Room to learn the story of the Concord grape and 150 years of grape growing in the Lake Erie region. A NATIONAL FOREST 100-Hundred Years in the Making
By Christopher Leeser, USDA Forest Service Since1923, the Forest Service has been restoring and caring for the Allegheny National Forest, creating the perfect venue for your year-round outdoor adventures. With outstanding opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, riding ATVs, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, horseback riding, hunting, boating, fishing, and camping. Plus, relaxing in nature, wildlife watching, backpacking, outdoor learning and immersing yourself in history. Enjoy the scenic vistas, rejuvenate your spirit, or simply take a drive through the woods, there is something for everyone in Pennsylvania’s only national forest!
Just one hundred years ago, the 514,183 acres that became Allegheny National Forest were by and large a desolate, wildfire-ravaged landscape. Timber harvesting, the oil boom, and the subsequent railroad logging era had stripped the mountains of their trees, leaving not much more than a brush patch and streams choked with mud. Gifford Pinchot, the Father of American Forestry, and other conservation pioneers had the vision to restore our Nations’ forests for the benefit of future generations. The Weeks Act of 1911 empowered the nascent US Forest Service to protect watersheds and produce timber through the purchase of forested, cutover, or denuded lands. The headwaters of the Allegheny River were chosen to become a national forest and the first parcel of land totaling 32,000 acres was approved for purchase in 1922, setting the stage for President Calvin Coolidge to establish the Allegheny National Forest on September 24, 1923. There was much work to be done, especially if the Forest were to realize the potential identified by L.L. Bishop, the first forest supervisor.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) program brought the ingenuity and muscle to get the work of forest restoration moving forward.
The CCC enlisted single men between the ages of 18 to 25 to work on improving America’s public lands. The second CCC camp in the Nation was established in the Allegheny National Forest. The Forest hosted 16 CCC camps from 1933 – 1942. The CCC boys’ legacy of recreation areas, buildings, roads, trails, erosion control, and reforestation work is evident throughout the forest and are among the twelve points of interest related to their enduring work that await your discovery using the National Forest Explorer App.
Over decades, forest service scientists investigated methods to overcome ecological problems and collaborated with foresters to implement plans that have resulted in the resilient second-growth forest that has reclaimed the once scarred mountainsides. Forest Supervisor Bishop’s words in 1925 were prophetic, “With the further extension of the highway systems and the completion of the Allegheny purchase program, thousands will annually seek the region for pleasant and wholesome out-of-door recreation”. That is indeed what came to pass, each year hundreds of thousands of people pursue their happiness through the outstanding outdoor recreation opportunities available to them in the now-reforested, northwestern corner of Pennsylvania.
The 100th anniversary is the perfect time to immerse yourself in the diverse history and revel in the conservation success story that is Allegheny National Forest. Please join us for the ANF Centennial Celebration at the Twin Lakes Recreation Area on September 24, 2023, from 11 am to 7 pm. YWCA WESTFIELD HOSTS 51ST ANNUAL ARTS & CRAFTS FESTIVAL IN MOORE PARK
YWCA Westfield announced its annual Arts & Crafts Festival will take place the weekend of July 28th and 29th. The free two-day event is held at Moore Park, where visitors will be able to browse dozens of booths offering handmade items including original art, home and lawn decor, clothing, accessories and toys.
“We appreciate the committee work that goes into the Arts & Crafts Festival every year,” said YWCA Westfield Executive Director Stephanie Stevens. “This event is such a celebration of creativity and community and we really look forward to it.”
Approximately 125 vendors will offer a variety of craftwork and approximately 5,000 people are expected to attend over the course of the weekend. In addition to the shopping opportunities, food will be available from different vendors and will include sandwiches, salads, wraps, baked goods and ice cream.
“The Arts & Crafts Festival brings together the community as well as welcomes visitors to the area each year,” said YWCA Westfield Board President and event Chairperson Kathryn Bronstein. “Local art and craftwork is featured and it gives us a chance to show off what this region has to offer! Visitors can
even stay in the YWCA Westfield Air BNB.”
Since its launch in 1971, proceeds of more than $160,000 have been invested to support community projects such as holiday decorations, a freezer for the soup kitchen, park benches, new trash cans and lights for safety and beautification.
In 1992, YWCA Westfield took on the planning and hosting of the event, which is now known as the YWCA Westfield Arts & Crafts Festival.
At that time Linda Dunn who was one of the event’s original organizers said that the event was ready for new leadership and that after 20 successful years, she believed it would continue for 20 more. Last year marked 30 more years, and the YWCA Arts & Crafts Festival is still going strong.
Mark your calendars now so you can plan to make the most of this event. For those attending, parking is available throughout the Village as well as at the Westfield Academy and Central School bus garage with continuous shuttles to the park and back. Proceeds from booth rental are now used by the YWCA Westfield to support its mission of empowering women and eliminating racism.
As summer slowly transitions into its golden hues, the town of Westfield eagerly prepares for a remarkable milestone: the inaugural Westfield Grape and Wine Festival. Set against the picturesque backdrop of vineyards and rolling hills, this highly anticipated event marks the beginning of a cherished tradition that brings together locals and visitors alike for a celebration of all things grape and wine.
The first Westfield Grape and Wine Festival pays homage to the region’s rich viticulture heritage and the hardworking grape growers and talented winemakers who have nurtured these fertile lands. It serves as a testament to the town’s deep-rooted connection with the land and the pride it takes in producing exceptional concentrates, juices, and wines.
One of the festival’s greatest appeals lies in its ability to cater to a diverse audience. Families with young children can revel in the array of kid-friendly activities and educational exhibits that teach them about the fascinating process of grape growing and harvesting. Meanwhile, wine enthusiasts can embark on a tasting journey through the various vineyards’ offerings, discovering new favorites with each pour.
The festival’s atmosphere is electric. Live music fills the air, creating a symphony of celebration. Local artisans proudly

display their creations, adding a touch of creativity to the festivities. It is an opportunity for them to showcase their talent and for festival-goers to bring home unique souvenirs.
Central to the festival’s success is the strong sense of community that permeates throughout. The first Westfield Grape and Wine Festival acts as a unifying force, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and togetherness. It is a moment of collective pride as the community comes together to celebrate this inaugural event. The festival also provides a valuable platform for local businesses to shine. Restaurants and eateries in the area seize the opportunity to tantalize taste buds with delectable food pairings that complement the wines on offer. Visitors are treated to a gastronomic journey, savoring gourmet bites that further showcase the town’s culinary prowess.
Beyond the enjoyment of food and wine, the first Westfield Grape and Wine Festival plays a significant role in boosting tourism and driving economic growth for the region. As visitors flock to the festival, they explore the town’s charming streets, stay in local accommodations, and support the businesses that make Westfield the vibrant destination it is. The festival acts as a catalyst for the local economy, injecting vitality and opportunity into the community.
As we eagerly anticipate the inaugural Westfield Grape and Wine Festival, let us embrace the vibrance and unity it represents. Let us raise our glasses and toast to the passionate grape growers, the talented winemakers, and the dedicated organizers who have worked tirelessly to make this event a reality. Together, let us celebrate the beauty of this remarkable town and its promising journey into the world of grape and wine festivals.
In the heart of Westfield, where the sweetness of grapes meets the craftsmanship of winemaking, the first Westfield Grape and Wine Festival stands as a testament to the power of community, the magic of shared experiences, and the beginning of a longstanding tradition.
Cheers to the First Westfield Grape and Wine Festival—a celebration that embodies the true spirit of community, gratitude, and the vibrant flavors that unite us all.
GERRY RODEO
Professional rodeo is headed to Western New York for the 78th consecutive year for four nightly performances, August 2-5, at 8:00, with nearly 250 pro cowboys and cowgirls from more than 30 states competing for approximately $50,000 in prize money.
This event, sponsored by the Gerry Volunteer Fire Department, features exciting competition in eight rodeo events – bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, and bull riding, along with two events for the cowgirls – barrel racing and breakaway roping. Adding to the action are rodeo clown, Rob Gann; announcer Greg Simas; and bull fighter Phil Hussmann. Each performance will be shown on a stadium style 20-footwide video board which gives the fans closeups of the action as well as instant replays.
The stock for the competition will be provided again t his year by Painted Pony Pro Rodeo, who will be trucking more than 100 head of stock to Gerry from their ranch in Lake Lucerne, New York. They produce about 50 rodeo performances each year in sites all over the East.
For many, the highlight of the event is the Western style barbeque dinner, featuring beef cooked outside over wood fires for eight hours and served with secret recipe barbeque sauce, kettle browned potatoes, corn, cottage cheese, tossed salad, ice cream, and a drink. Dinners are served in the air- conditioned dining room each evening, Wednesday through Saturday, from 5:00 -8:00.
For those who like to come early, there is a midway with about 20 vendors offering everything from Western wear and souvenirs to cotton candy and friend dough. Two food concession stands are also open with sandwiches and drinks. There are activities for the kids including sand art, face painting, and pony rides. All profits benefit the Gerry Volunteer Fire Department in their efforts to protect the lives and property of the surrounding area as they answer more than 300 fire and emergency calls each year. The rodeo arena is located on Route 60, five miles north of Jamestown, New York
Additional information is available at the rodeo website www.gerryrodeo.org or by phone at (716) 9854847 or 1-888-985-4847. Tickets are available ahead of the event at the above website and phone numbers and at the Country Fair stores in Fredonia and Gerry and at the Quik Fill store at Exit 12 in Jamestown.

There are ALWAYS wonderful dogs just waiting for the right person or family to come meet them. A 4-legged friend might just be the best friend ever. From energetic ball players and running companions to happy go lucky dog pals to slow and steady couch potatoes, NCCR has them all! The shelter can be reached at adoptions@caninerescue.org or 716-326-7297.
NCCR can always use volunteers, foster homes, donations and financial support. Volunteer applications, foster home applications and a donation list can be found online. NCCR created the Sampson Fund named after a dog found freezing in the snow a number of years ago. The Sampson Fund helps with the veterinary bills for the most urgent and sick cases that come into the shelter. Sampson’s story is also online.
One of the best fundraisers for the shelter is coming up soon - the 11th Annual Dog-Gone Good Yard Sale is happening July 28th & 29th from 9am-4pm and July 30th from 9am-noon at the shelter. Remember, it’s all for the dogs, but discounts will start Saturday afternoon and any items that haven’t sold by Sunday will be bargain basement prices! Donations are accepted through July 22nd. We will once again be selling raffle tickets with 2 BIG tables of Raffle Baskets including lottery tickets, gas gift cards, and many themed baskets. Try your luck! New this year will be Foodies Sweets N Eats food truck offering a nice selection of tasty treats to keep you energized while shopping. This event just keeps getting bigger and bigger; if you’ve been before, you know there are a HUGE number of wonderful items to buy at great prices. We are BURSTING at the seams with amazing bargains! Watch the website or the Northern Chautauqua Canine Rescue Facebook page for any updates. The dogs and volunteers greatly appreciate the community’s support. “NYS Registered Rescue #028”

THE NATIONAL COMEDY CENTER OPENS NEW EXHIBITS AND EXPERIENCES
As the nation’s official cultural institution for the art form of comedy, the National Comedy Center continues to welcome visitors to Jamestown, NY. Named the “Best New Museum” in the country by USA Today and one of the” World’s Greatest Places” by TIME magazine, the Comedy Center is one of the most interactive and immersive museums in the world. Condé Nast Traveler called the National Comedy Center “one of the best museums in the country,” and People magazine named it one of “100 Reasons to Love America.” Visitors from all 50 states and eighteen countries have given the Center a rare 5 out of 5 rating on TripAdvisor, ranking among the highest in the attraction and tourism industry.
Over the past year, the National Comedy Center has been featured in media across the country including The New York Times and CBS Sunday Morning U.S. News & World Report named it a “25 Top Weekend Family Getaway in the U.S.” joining a prestigious list of national attractions including Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
The most significant enhancements to the National Comedy Center since its grand opening in 2018 took place when it opened two new exhibits — Johnny Carson: The Immersive Experience Hosted by Jimmy Fallon, a multi-screen theater presentation celebrating Johnny Carson’s 30 years hosting The Tonight Show 30 years later, featuring Jimmy Fallon as the hologram host, plus Steve Martin, Mel Brooks, Bette Midler, Martin Short, Byron Allen, Billy Crystal, Paula Poundstone, Jay Leno and more — and Carl Reiner: Keep Laughing, a multi-media, interactive exhibit that honors and celebrates Carl Reiner and his collaborations with Mel Brooks, Sid Caesar, Steve Martin, Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore.
A collection from the estate of the beloved Betty White, as well as a collection from the groundbreaking sketch comedy series In Living Color, are now on display, having recently become a part of the Center’s permanent archive. These artifacts and wardrobe will be preserved by the Comedy Center’s Carl Reiner Department of Archives and Preservation.
The Comedy Center recently opened a new exhibit celebrating the renowned New York City comedy club, Carolines on Broadway and its founder/owner Caroline Hirsch, and it just announced that it will be the home of comedy legend Joan Rivers’ career archives including her extraordinary 65,000 joke file. Look for a new interactive exhibit on Rivers at the Center opening in 2025.
This summer, the National Comedy Center is welcoming kids and teens for free, made possible by the generosity of Shults Auto Group. Now through Labor Day weekend, kids can enjoy a day filled with laughter, for free (up to two kids per paying adult), and experience a variety of family-friendly interactive exhibits, from creating cartoons and memes, to putting themselves in classic TV and movie scenes and performing comedy karaoke. Learn more about this at ComedyCenter.org/kids.
The National Comedy Center’s 31st Lucille Ball Comedy Festival will take place this summer, August 2nd through 5th, featuring record-breaking comedians Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias and Taylor Tomlinson, plus 50 live events over five days, featuring some of the most talented stand-up comics from across the country. The lineup includes a Stand-up Showcase, Comedy Late Night shows, a free family comedy and variety event, I Love Lucy legacy events, live music, block parties and much more. ALLEGHENY NATIONAL FOREST REGION HIKING & BIKING ADVENTURES
By Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau - Linda DevlinThe massive trail systems in and around the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) Region offer just a wide variety of exciting and beautiful trail experiences. Beginners will enjoy the easy 1-mile loop trails and interpretive trails for birding. For more experienced hikers and bikers there are trails up to 10-miles with a rating of moderate, plus multi-day backpacking trails. The granddaddy of all trails within the ANF is the North Country Trail at 96.8-miles. Jakes Rocks and Morrison Trail both offer great mountain biking opportunities, while the three trails at the Kinzua Bridge State Park range from easy to more difficult. All the trails mentioned are located nearby in northwestern Pennsylvania. In addition, this year marks the 100th year anniversary for the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) so two very special trail activities have been created to help visitors explore the ANF.
Centennial Hiking Challenge- Hike 100 Miles to Commemorate 100 Years
If you are an avid hiker looking to explore the trails within the Allegheny National Forest this hiking challenge is for you. Hike 100 miles of the best and most beautiful trails in the Allegheny National Forest in honor of the ANF Centennial. Begin your challenge by downloading your trail log from www.fs.usda.gov/detail/allegheny/learning/history-culture. It is
recommended to choose from the trails listed on the website, but you can choose others from within the Allegheny National Forest making sure they add up to 100 miles. As you are hiking, remember to mark the date, trail name, and miles hiked on your log. When you complete 100 miles bring your hiking log to the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau, 80 E. Corydon Street, Bradford, PA, or one of the ranger stations in
Bradford, Marienville, or Warren, Pennsylvania, to receive your commemorative camping mug, while supplies last. The hiking challenge ends Sept. 24, 2023, just in time for the ANF Centennial Celebration at Twin Lakes which will include food, music, guided hikes and more.
ANF Centennial Geocache Trail
This commemorative geocache trail has been created to offer an opportunity to connect the American public to the outdoors, to encourage families to explore the national forest together, and to provide educational and recreational opportunities for the users of the trail. If you are new to geocaching it is like hunting for buried treasure except you are using a GPS unit, clues found online, and the treasure is a variety of items or codes contained within the hidden cache. For this geocache, you will be retrieving a specific code. The first step in enjoying this trail is to register on www.geocaching.com. Once registered, participants will be able to retrieve the coordinates and other location information. The next step is to pick up your passport from the ranger stations or download if from www.pennsoil.org. Then follow the instructions to be eligible for an ANF Centennial Souvenir Token trackable on geocaching.com.
Kinzua Bridge State Park Trails
The Kinzua Bridge State Park is widely known as the home of the Kinzua Sky Walk, “one of the top 10 most scenic skywalks in the world,” but it also offers three distinct trail experiences. The General Kane Trail is an easy family friendly trail through a hardwood forest, it has very little change in elevation making it a fun activity to do with children. The Kinzua Creek Trail is the most challenging trail at the park, it is a steep hiking trail down the side of the gorge. At the bottom of the gorge, you can see the massive steel towers twisted and lifted from their foundations during the tornado of 2003. It is recommended to wear hiking boots and to take water with you for the hike back up. The third trail, the Knox & Kane Rail Trail has been selected as the “2023 Pennsylvania Trail of the Year.” This section of the trail links the park to Mt. Jewett and Lantz Corners. It is open for hiking, biking, and equestrian use.
Mountain Biking & Gravel Riding in the ANF
There are miles and miles of gravel forest service roads open for biking, the best way to find which roads are open yearly is to purchase an open road map from the Allegheny National Forest at one of their ranger stations. Two developed mountain biking trails exist in the ANF. The Trails at Jakes Rocks are an exciting, stacked loop mountain biking trail system. This 30+ mile trail was developed in partnership with Trail Solutions, a sister company of the International Mountain Biking Association, a world-renowned trail development company. THE RED HOUSE SERVES AS BARN WEDDING VENUE WITH A STEP BACK IN TIME
The RED (Retreat Event Destination) House in Cassadaga is a living piece of Chautauqua County’s past.
“I always feel shear relaxation and comfort when I come onto the property. The area I get the most internal feeling is when I cross the threshold into the kitchen,” says Nancy, the current owner. “I just wish the building could talk and I could learn more.”
She thinks about the women and their families who lived in the beautiful home and worked their farms with no indoor plumbing or electricity and wonders what their lives were like.
The elegant 19th century Victorian manor, with seven fireplaces, was built by the Denny Family in 1860. It is a very well preserved example of the detailed structures of the time with transom windows, bay windows and crafted hardwood floors.
Over the years, the house has been mentioned in several books and publications, such as Nineteenth Century Houses in Western New York, In The Rear Window and The Sittin’ Stone. These books, as well as articles, letters, and old photos are on display in the parlor for visitors to peruse.
Over the years the house has served many purposes. At one time it was the Homecroft Inn and at another it was connected to the Lily Dale Sanitarium. Also in it’s past it served as a reflection room and played an important role in the Freemason’s initiation ceremonies. Another interesting feature that used to exist at the house was a tunnel leading to Cassadaga Lake.
An open staircase decorated with dental crown molding work, is located inside the double front doors. Several bedrooms with fireplaces are found on the second level. A thirdfloor ballroom is often used to take pictures because of lighting and unique windows. Guests who climb the stairs to the cupola see the grounds from a very different perspective and may see the deer and turkey that sometimes roam below.
The most popular use of the manor today is for the bride and groom to get ready on their big day, with the bride and her attendants using the front of the house and the groom and groomsmen using two rooms in the rear of the house that used to be the quarters for the hired help. There is a front and back staircase, so the groom doesn’t accidentally see his bride before the ceremony. Since 2022 the manor is also available for overnight stays for those visiting the area
The barn is the reception hot spot and if inclement weather brings the ceremony indoors if is a beautiful back drop for the ceremony. It is the perfect setting for formal or informal celebrations. The current barn was built in 1910, after the first one burned. It was built from blocks made by the Cassadaga Block Company which were made from gravel from Cassadaga Lake. The beams are built with peg construction and give a cathedral like feeling to the second floor.
The original elevator which utilizes a pulley system is a carryover from the old barn. Chandeliers light both floors. A covered open loft in the back brings in the outdoors through the big swing doors that mirror those in the front of the barn.
With the amazing manor and rustic barn the property is a great mix of the eloquence and casual comfort to the setting that is nestled on six parklike acres framed by deep woods. They have been the magical backdrop for a decade of wedding ceremonies and receptions.
The RED House which is located at 91 Frisbee Road in Cassadaga, is truly an area treasure to be experienced and enjoyed. For more information visit the website www.the-redhouse.org, email Nancy@the-red-house.org, or call (716) 595-2450.

WEIDNER BBQ IS FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED
Try one of our original recipe favorites • Treat your guests to a homemade BBQ Dinner!
In 1956, Bert Weidner and his two brothers set up a small stand at the Erie County Fair and began serving BBQ Chicken. They slow cooked fresh chicken over an open flame all the while basting it with their own special recipe BBQ sauce until it was cooked to perfection – tender and juicy on the inside, crispy and golden brown on the outside.
Three generations later, we are cooking it the exact same way and using the sauce as Bert and his brothers did over 60 years ago. Today we are still at the Erie County Fair, the Eden Corn Festival and hundreds of fundraisers, events and private parties all over Western NY.
Now, not only can you order our signature chicken, but you can also try our wood smoked pork and ribs, tender roast beef or any of our delicious homemade sides.
If you are planning a party or event, give us a call! We will take care of all the food, so you can relax and enjoy yourself. You and your guests will be happy you did!

Summer is synonymous with relaxation and fun in the sun. The easygoing nature of summer can make it easy to overlook safety concerns that run the gamut from heat-related illnesses to bug bites to water play injuries. Though no one wants to rain on their own summer parade, keeping these safety tips in mind can ensure the coming months are as safe as they are fun.
• Safeguard against the threat of heat-related illnesses. Sizzling summer days pose a significant threat if the proper measures aren’t take to avoid heat-related illnesses. According to the National Safety Council, heat exhaustion, which occurs when the body loses excessive water and salt, and heat stroke, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes is marked by the body’s inability to control its temperature, can escalate rapidly. The NSC identifies individuals who work outdoors, infants and young children, people who are 65 and older, people who are ill, and people who are overweight as those most at risk of heat-related illnesses. Such illnesses are entirely preventable, and the CDC recommends remaining indoors in air conditioned rooms, drinking plenty of fluids but avoiding alcohol, wearing loose and lightweight clothing as well as a hat, and replacing salt lost from sweating by drinking fruit juice or sports drinks.
• Apply sunscreen. Long days in the summer sun may be a great way to relax, but it’s imperative that individuals apply sunscreen before going outside and then reapply it throughout the day as necessary. Sunburn is not only unpleasant, it also increases a person’s risk for skin cancer and affects the body’s ability to cool itself, which can increase the risk for heat stroke.
• Protect against mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are more than a mere nuisance. Mosquitoes can carry an assortment of viruses, including Zika virus and West Nile virus. And though such viruses are often thought of as a problem for people in faraway lands, the NSC notes that the Aedes mosquito, which is a known transmitter of the Zika virus, has appeared in various regions of the globe, including the continental United States and popular vacation destinations like Mexico and Central and South America. The NSC recommends that everyone, and especially individuals who work outdoors, apply mosquito repellant before going outside and to continue to do so as necessary throughout the day. In addition, clothing treated with the insecticide permethrin may help to repel mosquitoes.
• Exercise caution around water. The CDC reports that drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children between the ages of one and four. Though children might be most vulnerable to water-related accidents and death, adults also must exercise caution when around the water. The NSC
SUMMER SAFETY TIPS
recommends individuals avoid the water, be it in a lake, river, ocean, or pool, unless they know how to swim. Individuals also should never swim alone and only swim in areas supervised by a lifeguard. When swimming at a private residence, children should never be allowed to swim unless an adult is supervising. Adults also should avoid alcohol when swimming.
Summer is a season to relax, but it’s also a season when safety should be a top priority for people of all ages.
