THE BIRTH OF THE TEAM BAHRAIN MERIDA PRO CYCLING TEAM Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team is just born, already setting a record in the history of cycling as the UCI’s first Middle East team with a World Tour licence. How it all started depicts a story of passion for sport, love for cycling and admiration for pro riders for their exciting challenges on the worldwide roads. Above all, it’s a story of passion for one’s own country, the Kingdom of Bahrain and its people. It aims to showcase the country on a global stage, presenting the Kingdom all over the world as a premier business and tourism destination, as well as supporting the growth of cycling within Bahrain and the Middle East which endeavours to achieve awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

T

The birth of the team can be described as a dream come true, the vision of a Prince, His Highness Sheikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa. He is a passionate sportsman and leads the Bahrain National Endurance Team. He also participates in regional and international endurance races where he won numerous medals. Sports including cycling in particular are just few of his passions. The thrilling competitions among pro riders in the most important races of the world have always made him desireto create a team who willcarry around the world the name of Bahrain, his country. It was on February 2014 when Sheikh Nasser met Vincenzo Nibali for the first time. He is one of the strongest and most famous cyclists in the world. The Italian rider was in the Middle East to attend the Dubai Tour when he

gladly accepted the invitation of the Prince to visit Bahrain for a casual ride together. It was then that His Highness came up with the idea of creating a Pro Team representing Bahrain, comprising of the most prestigious cyclists in the world and aiming for the top. However, the time was not quite right for such a project but it set the wheels in motion.

It aims to showcase

At the end of January 2015, the Prince once again invited Vincenzo Nibali in Bahrain. The Italian cyclist gave Sheikh Nasser the yellow jersey he wore when he won the Tour de France in July 2016. He made history by becoming one of the six riders to have won all the three Grand Tours. During that time, they started talking about the idea of establishing a new team around Nibali, ending up with a successful discussion and a plan. The Italian champion was with his Italian manager Alex Carera at the time. They were both introduced to Sheikh Nasser by

Milan Erzen, a former Slovenian rider who was a coach and a team manager of Adria Mobil. Erzen appeared to be the right man to work on this project with his vast knowledge and experience in the world of cycling; and his close relationship with the Prince. Beyond presenting the Kingdom of Bahrain to the world as the destination of business and tourism, the ultimate objective of His Highness is to support the national vision to inspire sports enthusiasts in Bahrain and the Middle East. With this in mind, Erzen with the support of Carera and some of the world’s proven cycling experts carefully studied the project in order to present it to the government of the Kingdom of Bahrain including the consortium of businesses and partners from the country such as the Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO). Meanwhile the Prince kept on showing his support as a fan of pro cycling and had set a meeting with Nibali during the

enthusiasts, and fans to visit the country.

After two years of meticulous planning and analysis of the growing sport of professional road cycling, the final decision to form the team finally came to fruition in January 2016. The presentation produced by Erzen together with the pool of experts have been a success. The birth of the first Pro Cycling Team of Bahrain was not just a dream but now a reality. The clear vision for the team was created: a Bahrain Pro Cycling team, who can inspire and encourage people within the Kingdom to engage in the sport, be that as a spectator, or take up cycling themselves. Moreover, since millions of people are watching Pro Cycling races all over the world, the idea is to also attract cyclists, cycling

On 29th of July 2016, an official announcement to the world have been released, “The Kingdom of Bahrain has today announced its support for a new professional cycling team - Bahrain Cycling Team, supported by the Kingdom of Bahrain and funded through a consortium of businesses and partners from Bahrain”. Erzen was appointed to build the team and in 2016 he started working on selecting the best riders for the team. He approached the riders and agents, first of all Vincenzo Nibali and Alex Carera, offering the Italian manager a role in the new team. As one of the biggest rider agents in the world, Carera has a wide network of contacts of riders and technical sponsors for the team,

particularly the bike supplier. For several months, some of the most famous brands were challenged to supply bikes for Nibali and teammates. The team waited for the official announcement of the brand who will have the honour to be the official bike provider for the first pro cycling team in Bahrain. On 1st of August 2016, the team announced MERIDA, one of the biggest manufacturers in the world as the co-title sponsor and provider of the team’s bikes. The Taiwanese bicycle company is a brand well-known by Brent Copeland, who gladly accepted the proposal of Erzen and Carera to become the General Manager of the Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team. Since July 2016 the South African manager shifted his focus entirely on this new project,

working strategically increating the core group around Vincenzo Nibali, who was announced on 3rd of August 2016. It was followed by the announcements of the other riders and technical staff. The management of the team then submitted to UCI the request for the World Tour licence. On 25th of November 2016, after a strong strategic plan, Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team’s clear goals, effort and commitment succeeded in becoming one of the 18 teams in the World Tour to have a UCI World Tour licence. A goal accomplished and a first success for the newly established team. Its first and major supporter His Highness Sheikh Nasser, is now looking forward to the victories of its riders in the most important competitions of the Pro Cycling map.

INTERVIEW

TURNING DREAMS INTO REALITY An interview with HH Sheikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa on the realisation of his vision of creating a Pro Cycling Team that will carry Bahrain’s name all over the world and will help shape the future of sports in the country.

C

reating a team of the best professional cyclist in the world started as an idea and a dream. Sheikh Nasser shares his vision for the team and Bahrain.

Can you please give a brief background on how the idea of creating the Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling came about? What is your inspiration behind this idea? I love sports and I have been a sportsman at a very young age. I enjoy endurance sports in particular like endurance horse riding and have been a fan of endurance cycling as well. Following the World Tour is one of my favorite things to do. Being one of Vincenzo Nibali’s fans, when I came to learn that he was participating in Dubai Tour I invited him to visit Bahrain and have a casual ride together. We had a great conversation on cycling and of his many achievements in sports. That’s when the idea of creating a cycling team started. All of the sporting activities that myself and my brother HH Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa do is always in support of the national vision to promote sports and create a healthy lifestyle.

16

My main goal in sports is for Bahrain as a country to be recognised around the world in

sporting activities, to place my country in the sporting map, for Bahraini youth to be in the limelight in future and hopefully to encourage the youth and local community through sports to live a healthy lifestyle. Cycling is just one of the many sports I would like to introduce to Bahrain.

Among the many other sports that you support, what made you decide to put the spotlight on cycling this time around? Aside from endurance horse riding, I have been focusing on triathlon lately which raised my passion in cycling. From having triathlon in the country and with the growing community of triathletes, the next best sport to bring to the country is cycling. Everyone can cycle; it is a fantastic sporting activity that the whole family and community can enjoy. Formula One has been a great platform for Bahrain in placing the country’s name in the international sporting arena. However, it provides massive publicity only for the weekend during the three days racing period. Cycling will be another platform that will generate a much wider publicity as it encompasses 200 days of racing which will create a lasting image for Bahrain. After the Olympic Games and Football World Cup, the Tour de France is the third biggest sporting event in the

17

world. All the stakeholders who have invested into the team will absolutely get massive international exposure of their brands throughout the year. This will also highlight Bahrain’s name in the world.

How big of a role in your overall sports portfolio would this team play? What do you envision to be the future of this team and its role in the local and global cycling arena? I envision the Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team to provide a source of inspiration to the Bahraini people and help encourage the community to be active in sports and start living a healthy lifestyle. The team being the first in the Middle East to be granted a UCI license for two years will be the sporting ambassador of Bahrain and the Middle East in the international cycling arena, and hopefully one day to win the Grand Tour. The team has set plans in developing local athletes to have a Bahraini rider on the team in the near future. Cycling is one of the most watched sports that is broadcast live on television all over the world. Representing Bahrain in a global sporting event will surely place the country in the minds of all the people.

Do you see any specific impact of this initiative in areas such as tourism, culture, the economy or others? What do you see as its value to the promotion of the Bahraini culture? All of the sports activities that we do are raising the profile to generate awareness in sports, showcasing where Bahrain is and what the country can offer. Bahrain is such a small country and many people around the world are not aware where it is located. To be able to promote

18

It is my dream to have Bahrainis in the team in future; racing for Bahrain and winning the world’s most famous cycling races like the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and so on. tourism in Bahrain, there are a myriad of things to consider. Among them is educating the world about Bahrain; its location, our people, our culture and what we can offer. Creating a team bearing Bahrain’s name is one way of raising awareness about Bahrain in the international community and inspire people’s curiosity about the country. The team is working together with the Bahrain Tourism Authority in partnering with various activities and ways that will promote tourism in the country. We plan to organise cycling activities in future that the local community and athletes around the world can participate. Such events will bring visitors to Bahrain that will boost tourism and increase the country’s economy. The aim in promoting sports to the Bahraini community is to create a culture of camaraderie, sportsmanship and a healthy lifestyle. I would love to see this vision in full bloom soon.

Can you share with us the selection process and criteria for being a member of the first-ever Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team? Behind Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team is a group of

experienced professionals and seasoned cyclists like Milan Erzen, Brent Copeland and Alex Carera. I trust their expertise in selecting the best cyclists for the team.

In the future, many Bahrainis might also be inspired to join the team, what tips can you give the aspirants so they can also be part of this team? It is my dream to have Bahrainis in the team in future; racing for Bahrain and winning the world’s most famous cycling races like the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and so on. For all the Bahrainis who wish to be part of the team, the first thing to do is to get on your bike, start cycling, live a healthy lifestyle, follow the team and enjoy cycling. This will hopefully deepen your passion in cycling. If your interest and passion in cycling is there, everything else will follow. The team will be conducting several activities next year, be a part of it and we are certainly looking forward to meet cycling enthusiasts who can be developed as a future endurance cyclist.

Learning how to ride the bicycle has always been used as a metaphor for explaining life and its challenges, what can you say about this sport, why you support it, and why should others take it on? Cycling is indeed a good metaphor for life and overcoming its challenges. One needs good balance to cycle just like in life. Adding healthy lifestyle, enjoying sports that you love will certainly give a better work and life balance to people. I personally love cycling. Other than a sport, it is an activity that everyone can learn easily and enjoy. In the beginning it is a bit difficult to learn how to balance and cycle, but once you’re on the bike, it gives a feeling of accomplishment and freedom for an adventure. Cycling has a lot of benefits to offer to everyone whether you are trying to lose weight, recovering from injury, trying to get on a meditative state, or aiming to be happy. I encourage everyone to get on a bike and cycle even if they are not looking to be an athlete. It will change their life and how they see things. It is a good way of keeping fit without going to the gym.

INTERVIEW

MEET THE BOSS As guaranteed by his professional path with a complete knowledge in all the cycling fields despite his young age, Brent Copeland is the General Manager of the Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling team. His aim is to unveil the Kingdom of Bahrain as one of the most competitive and well known countries in the world of Cycling. One of his ultimate goals is to have a Bahraini Pro Cyclist to watch in the World Tours in the future.

Hi Brent, Welcome to Bahrain. Is this your first time here? Have you enjoyed your stay? Thank you. It’s my second time in Bahrain. It has been a fantastic trip this time around. The first time I came here was last March when they first proposed to meet to take on the General Manager position. I was here just for one day so I didn’t get time to see around much but for the last two days, I’ve got to see the Island. I’ve looked around and really enjoyed my stay here. It has been an absolute pleasure. The people are very welcoming. It’s fantastic to be here.

You’ve built your career around cycling, where did your passion come from and who was the driving force to get you into this sports of cycling? I started at a fairly young age in South Africa at the age of 17. I have my cousin to thank for who introduced me to the sport. My dream was to become a professional cyclist in Europe. I left home at the age of 20, went to Europe and raced for a couple of years. Unfortunately, I never turned professional. I had a lot to learn and I learned a lot in those years. At the age of 25, I was ready to go back home but then

20

I’m looking forward to be imparting my experience and putting any input I can to help the team out in the best way possible. I was offered the opportunity to stay on and work for a Swiss Italian team. That was when my working career in cycling started. I went to Europe in 1994 so it has already been 22 years that I’ve been staying in Europe, mostly in Italy. It feels like it was just yesterday but actually, 22 years have gone past.

What would be different in managing the Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team from your previous experience? Where do you see the challenges coming from? Any experience that you have in the past is always an experience you can take on to whatever future jobs you’re going to be working on. Working for those two teams were both different experiences. They both have

21

different cultures, mentalities, and ways of working. I think mixing the two together gave me a good opportunity to give even more to Bahrain Merida which they deserve. It’s important that I give more input in order to know what a different cultured team can bring to cycling. I’ve also worked at Yamaha

What do you think the team needs to do to be successful? Success for a cycling team of this level that we put together obviously comes through victories. People would want to see victories. They would want to see the brands through television and to see the brands on the races.

Moto-Racing and Moto-GP for four years which was a fantastic experience as well. I’ve worked with Ben Spies, one of the top Moto GP riders, and a passionate cyclist himself. Putting all these together gave me a great experience in which I can give to Bahrain Merida. I’m looking forward to be imparting my experience and putting any input I can to help the team out in the best way possible.

22

With organisation comes the good

Personally, I want to see the team as well organised with a good image from the start. This is mine and the management’s first main goal before we see victories because one doesn’t work without the other. If you start the team off on a new project, it’s always a challenge. With organisation comes the good image and when you mix the two together, victories come so much easier. This is the starting point for us. This is what we’re working towards from the beginning. Having HH Sheikh Nasser as our supporter is something truly

seeing the passion he has for lifestyle he exceeds towards is team members can all learn and look up to him for this.

What are your goals for 2017 and what are the specific races that you’re targeting for the Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team? We are part of the World Tour team which is the elite of cycling. It’s the highest level of any cycling team can get to so we are obliged to do the World Tour Races. These consist of races that start in Australia in January and end in October at the end of the season. We are to do these races so we’re not selecting one more than the other. We will work with our 27 riders in the best way possible to put the best team together in each race they go to. If you ask me about specific goals, obviously having Nibali, being the leader of the team. He’s going for the general classification of the grand tours.

We would obviously like him to win a Grand Tour, either Giro d’Italia or Tour de France. This is the main goal that we are working towards with the training staff and all the staff behind this project is already working to plan the races to those grand tours

The team is going to be racing from January all the way to October with

You’ve mentioned Vincenzo Nibali, are you happy with the overall roster of the team and the process of the team selection?

Bahrain Merida on

We were really pleased the way it has come together. Choosing the team roster for a new project is never easy. It’s always a challenge because the riders will look at it and say, “The team’s new”, “How is the organisation of the team?” “What’s the image of the team?” There were a lot of questions. But together with the management team and the trainers, we’ve looked at specific riders and we’ve gone through many riders. We’ve selected them from the elite. We were really good at explaining to them what Bahrain Merida was about and what was behind the team. Fortunately, all these top riders have accepted us which gives us great satisfaction. If you look at the team roster, I think anyone would be happy with what we’ve put together. Having Vincenzo on the team gave a huge amount of guarantee to the project, this helped convince the riders, staff and sponsors to get involved, the same can be said for Alex, the two of them helped secure the project as did Merida when they got on board. We got many top names in the team which gives us great pleasure. We’ll do one step better in the following year. We will work towards the Belgian classics which is important for us. We want the athletes to be shown in those races as well but it’s always difficult in a new project to come

We’re going to be

the World Map so it’s just not one race. doing something for the whole year to cover every single kind of category race. Overall, we’re very pleased for what we’ve got for the first year.

Looking beyond just the team in cycling, you have a bigger team which is the staff and the mechanics, are you happy with that selection and will they help the team be successful in these races? This is probably one of the points that we are more pleased about. The staff of the team is one of the most important points. If you don’t have the right staff, you can’t have the right organisation and you won’t get what you’re looking for from the team. You won’t get the visibility that you want. I don’t think that even with an unlimited budget, we would be able to put as good staff put together. The medical staff, technical staff, trainers, masseuse, mechanic, we’ve looked at every specific person that has come to the team. They’ve been selected from elites like the athletes and we’re very pleased of what we’ve put

together. They’re the best that you can find in the cycling world.

So we’ve spoken a lot about the positives of the team but we also want to ask you, what do you think are the weaknesses in this new cycling team? There will always be some kind of weakness in the team that you gotta better otherwise, it would just be too easy. That puts us to the challenge. The weakness of the team is that it’s a new project so we’ve got to show to the world what this project’s about. We got to show to the athletes that we are organised. We gotta show to the Merida what we’ve put together. The thing is, we don’t have anything to show them at the moment. That’s why it’s important that the image and the organisation of the team are better. We are working on that but I’m confident that it will all come together

Over the past years, we’ve seen lot of races coming to the Gulf, in Qatar, Oman, UAE, and we recently have the world championships in Qatar. How do you think these races have helped the region? And with the first time coming out of the region in the form of Bahrain Merida, how will that develop the sports of cycling? The races have grown year by year. This sport, being the first World Tour team for cycling from the Gulf is something huge. This is taking it one step further. Organising the race is one thing and organising the team is another thing. The team is going to be racing from January all the way to October with Bahrain Merida on the world map so it’s just not one race. We’re going

We want to start the kids to cycle. We want them to understand cycling it’s all about, and to create a healthy environment. It’s a social responsibility. to be doing something for the whole year. Having said that, we are looking at bringing racing and cycling event to Bahrain and this is something we are talking about in a team. We’d love to do something together to bring cycling to the people in Bahrain like they’ve done in the other Gulf countries. This is an important step that we’d like to take because this way, it will give the opportunity to Bahraini people to get close to cycling for them to get an idea on what it’s all about.

We all know this can be quite a difficult sport. Where is the fun in cycling? Cycling is one of the most beautiful sports you can ever participate in. You have to ask a cyclist who has experienced cycling. I am going to try to get across to the people and to the general public who have never ridden a bicycle before. The satisfaction of getting on a bicycle, being outside in the fresh air, exercising and enjoying the freedom is huge. The satisfaction is great. In Bahrain, you don’t have climbs but when you get to Europe, you do a 10km climb and when you get to the top, that satisfaction is unexplainable. You gotta experience it.

23

24

We hope that the Bahraini people start to get on to the bicycles and start to ride to experience it and feel it themselves. It really is something unique. Cycling is a sport which you can do if you’re tall, if you’re short, if you’re big, or if you’re small. It’s not a sport just for one kind of category person and that’s what makes it so special. It’s not hard on your tendons and ligaments or on your back even though you bend over to a position that looks uncomfortable. Once you get used to that position, it’s really not hard on your body. It’s actually good for your body. In fact, a lot of doctors use cycling as a form of rehab for problems of knees or legs. It’s a great sport but you’re right, it’s not easy. You gotta work on it but that’s where great satisfaction comes from.

This has been a huge surprise for me in a really positive way coming in to do this new project and working in a country that has no cycling background and no cycling culture. I really thought it would have been a big challenge to work with the people in the administrative side but I must say, it has been an absolute pleasure working with them and I say that with all sincerity. They’ve understood cycling from day one. They’ve gone and found out about the background, what it’s about, the contracts, the bureaucratic side of it. It has been great. The enthusiasm that I’ve seen coming from the Bahraini people for this project has been fantastic.

How will you help connect to the people of Bahrain and how will you give back to Bahrain as a nation?

We want to put Bahrain as a brand globally through the vehicle of cycling. This is really important. We want to give

How do you think you’ll give back to the people of Bahrain?

back to the Bahraini people to try getting them to enjoy cycling whether they’re just a fan or a cyclist. We want them to understand the sport. We want them to enjoy it for them to know more about it, and hopefully their kids or they themselves will start to cycle. We’ve been working on projects with different associations. We want to start the kids to cycle. We want them to understand what it’s all about, and to create a healthy environment. It’s a social responsibility. These are the important points that we want to give back to Bahrain for the support that they’ve given us to take this team forward. So we are definitely going out of our way to do this. Hopefully, they’ll become our number one fan.

This is one of the things that

Do you think we can see a Pro Cyclist from Bahrain as part of the team racing in these world tours in the future?

we’re working over time. We want to find someone that we can get on to the team, teach him how the racing works, take him up to the pro level and have him racing as pro level, world level. Who knows, we may have a Bahraini cyclist in the Tour de France in the future. We want this to happen. We know it’s important to the Bahraini people. We saw how sports have evolved in Bahrain, athletics, endurance triathlete team and we want them to happen in cycling. It is a process. It doesn’t happen from one day to the next. We want to teach them how cycling works, take them to Europe, put them to the races athlete. We will definitely have a Bahraini Pro Cyclist.

THE WORLD OF CYCLING Cycling is one of the most popular sports in the world. It can be an intimidating sport for beginners, but it also can be one of the most rewarding. Yes, you may have to deal with traffic and the potential of a mishap but cycling is a great way to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to more scenic avenues while you improve your fitness.

TACTICS Cycling is a team sport and although only one rider wins, his victory is due to effective use of team tactics employed throughout the race. There are number of different tactics but most important are:

DRAFTING A rider can significantly reduce the required pedal effort by closely following in the slipstream of the rider in front. Riding in the main field, or peloton, can save as much as 40% of the energy employed in forward motion when compared to riding alone.

BREAKS A group of riders that “breaks away” (a “break”) from the peloton has more space and freedom, and can therefore be at an advantage in certain situations.

LEAD OUT TRAIN Bike races that are mostly f lat often end with a bunch sprint among specialists referred to as sprinters. The most successful cycling teams provide their sprinters with a well-rehearsed lead out train of three to four teammates sheltering the sprinter from the wind and clearing a path free of other riders.

UNION CYCLISTE INTERNATIONALE

TYPES OF RACES IN ROAD CYCLING There are two types of races: road races, where all of the riders that are competing start at once, and time trial races where individual riders or teams start at intervals.

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is the world governing body for the sport of cycling recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It was founded in Paris in 1900, and its headquarters are now located at the UCI’s World Cycling Centre in Aigle, Switzerland.

ROAD RACES

The UCI manages the races and the points ranking system in different disciplines – from road to mountain biking – for men and women and also amateur and professional riders. The UCI issues racing licenses to riders and enforces disciplinary rules – also in matters of doping, for example.

Races that go from one point to another (for example ParisRoubaix or Tour of Flanders) or on a circuit (for example UCI World Championships). Some courses combine both - taking the riders from a starting place and then finishing with several laps of a circuit, usually to ensure a

All of the riders start at the same time. The courses are of varying distances (for example: 260 km for Elite Men in the UCI World Championships) and the races have several different formats.

ONE DAY RACES

good spectacle for spectators at the finish. Another form of road races are stage races that consist of several races, or stages, ridden consecutively. The competitor with the lowest cumulative time to complete all stages is declared the overall winner (accordingly, a rider does not have to win all or any of the individual stages to win overall). Stage races that last longer than two weeks are called Grand Tours. The professional road bicycle racing calendar includes three Grand Tours, the Giro d’Italia, the Tour de France, and the Vuelta a Espana.

TIME TRIALS In time trials the riders set off individually at regular intervals (1-2 minutes). The Individual Time Trial is raced over 40-50

km. The winner is the rider that completes the course in the fastest time. Team Time Trial with the same principles but in this case the whole team of a minimum of two riders and a maximum of 10 riders competes. Also in this type of races there can be stage races where the winner is the time trial rider (or team) with the lowest time on the course.

ULTRA MARATHONS Ultra-distance cycling races are very long single stage events where the race clock continuously runs from start to finish. They usually last several days and the riders take breaks on their own schedules, with the winner being the first one to cross the finish line.

TEAM AND RIDERS

UCI WORLD TOUR

The number of riders per team

The UCI WorldTour is the annual male road cycling tour. The name refers to the tour and also an annual ranking system based upon performances in the events of the tour. Up to this year there were 27 events included, but for season 2017 there are 10 new additions. Alongside the three Grand Tours, there will be 14 stage races and 20 one-day events. As in previous years, the season will begin in January with the Santos Tour Down Under, and finish with Il Lombardia at the end of September.

is set by the organizer of an individual race, with a minimum of four and maximum of eight or nine riders for Grand Tours. In UCI World Tour events, the number of starting riders per team is nine for Grand Tours and eight for other events. Different riders have different strengths and weaknesses and so they perform different tactical roles within a team. The main types in road racing are:

1 BASIC CYCLING GEAR TO 2 GET YOU STARTED

BIKE

The very first item you need to buy if you want to start cycling seriously is a bike. Depending on the type of cycling you will do - whether road cycling, mountan biking or cycling just for fun and fitness, there are a variety of types out there to choose from. Select the one that fits your budget and requirement.

Is it your first time to ride a bike? Are you ready to start cycling but don’t know which item to buy first? Here’s a list of some of the basic gear you need to start riding. Not all cyclists will carry each item whenever they go riding.

30

HELMET

Helmet is the second most important gear you need after purchasing you first bike. Although cycling is actually safe; especially if you are riding away from the main roads around town, your chances of having a serious crash will be minimal. However, accidents happen all the time and it is better always wear protection. Helmets are designed to offer protection in relatively low-speed crashes that don’t involve motor vehicles. Helmets has to be properly fitted and securely attached to your head

3

CYCLING SHOES

There are a lot of cycling shoes options out there. Cycling shoes with cleats and so-called clipless pedals will drastically increase your pedaling efficiency, allowing you to pull on the upstroke and downstroke as well as increasing your speed and performance. Cycling-specific shoes have stiff soles so your feet don’t get sore f lexing over the pedals. Mountain bike shoes are sold with covered threads so you can still use your shoes with regular pedals which is a great option for new riders. You can also wear regular rubber shoes for an easy cycling ride for fun or fitness.

4

BIB / SHORTS

When you go out riding, you’ll be looking at comfortable clothing to wear. You can choose getting a regular short or a bib (shorts with built-in suspenders). If you’re planning to ride over 20 kilometeres, get the one with an actual pad that can provide you with a great deal of comfort when cycling long distance

5

SOCKS

Socks comes in two lengths - the simple toe covers and full booties for the clipless pedal cleats shoes. Make sure you check how tight your shoes are as getting a thicker socks are impractical for tight-fitting shoes. Socks will shelter your feet from wind and cold while riding.

6

SUNGLASSES

Bahrain’s weather is mostly dusty and sunny which makes it not fun to cycle. Eye protection is essential and one accessory you need to carry when you go riding. Choose glasses with as much coverage as possible to keep your eyes on the road and away from dust and other particles.

7

NUTRITION

Cycling is an excellent way to exercise your body, however such activity can also make you body weak without proper nutrition. Make sure you eat the right food before, during and after the ride. For longer rides, make sure you have some nutrition snack to keep you going.

8

GLOVES

Not all bikers wear gloves but it’s a good idea when you’re starting out because of the high probability of crashing. They also help reduce soreness caused by vibrations from the bike. Gloves protect your hands from soreness and vibraton including improving your grip while riding.

BAHRAIN MERIDA TEAM BIKES

T

he newly formed Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team will be equipped with the perfect array of MERIDA bikes for the upcoming 2017 season providing the perfect machine for every stage and every riding style. Three bikes will be in the arsenal for the team – the SCULTURA TEAM, the REACTO TEAM and the WARP TT. The bikes will not just represent the latest technology and level of innovation in road cycling but also visually represent the new team perfectly. ‘The colour scheme and design of the three BAHRAIN MERIDA team-bike models SCULTURA, REACTO and WARP TT incorporates the national colours of Bahrain - red and white. The detailing shows some classic road-style features and will be easily recognisable in the peloton, particularly in conjunction with the new helmet and race-kit design, the team will have a striking appearance, on and off the bike.’ – explains Jürgen Falke, Director of Products at MERIDA bicycles. Due to the demands of modern road racing which requires the perfect bike for every stage and race, as well as the different personal preferences and strength of the riders, the perfect choice of bike is an absolute necessity. Where every second counts, even the smallest advantages can make the difference between being victorious or not. Climbers and demanding mountain stages require a super light bike, which combines comfort, agility and perfect power transfer while more powerful riders and sprinters, as well as fast and f lat stages favour a more

32

aerodynamic bike with super power output and an aggressive riding position. And when the riders chase every second during the time trials of the Grand Tours the requirements vary once again. But the engineers of MERIDA have the perfect bikes ready for the season. The SCULTURA TEAM – one of the lightest road bikes in the world combines extremely low weight with comfort and sharp handling and will be used by the team on the majority of mountain stages. It is also the bike, which in its disc-brake version, is the ‘go-to-bike’ for some of the Classics which have cobblestone and even dirt road sections. The REACTO TEAM due to its market leading aerodynamic features slices through the air and despite its impressive power delivery offers the rider outstanding comfort and stability – two hugely important points when stage races last up to three weeks. And finally the WARP TT – the time trial specialist, which enables the rider to perfectly dial into the most aerodynamic riding position and be able to push the bike and himself to gain even the smallest time advantage. Specced with the best equipment available, our three bikes will be ready to be a strong force in the 2017 World Tour.

SCULTURA Presented for the first time in 2015 the SCULTURA is designed to be the lightweight ‘workhorse’ of the BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team. With an impressive frame weight of just 850 gr, the SCULTURA sets new standards when it comes to acceleration and climbing ability. But the new SCULTURA is much more than ‘a lightweight’. Despite its chain stays, which are just 400 mm long and provide great agility, the bike can take up to 25 mm tires to increase the excellent comfort even more. And to top it all off - the SCULTURA is wind tunnel optimized, and achieves aero readings that are almost equal to those of a dedicated aero racer. Combined with its traditional virtues, this produces a SCULTURA that is undoubtedly one of the best road bikes in the world.

33

REACTO The REACTO is TEAM BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team riders’ choice when they are looking for the aero advantage. Many hours of wind tunnel testing and gained knowledge from the WARP TT development process created the perfect aero bike. When every second counts at the end of a long breakaway, the REACTO is helping to preserve energy with its aero performance and super stiff bottom bracket, making sure that all energy is turned into speed. But the REACTO is not a specialist stage bike. With its low weight and unprecedented comfort, it will be the regular choice for many TEAM BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team riders and has won mountain stages, sprints and solo breakaways in the past!

WARP TT Totally focussed on aerodynamic performance, no other MERIDA road bike has spent more time in the wind tunnel. Developed for TEAM BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team to use in the time trial stages of the World Tour, the frame is designed around ‘NACA Fastback’ tube profiles. Pro riders may be similar in terms of ability and fitness, but their shape and riding style varies dramatically. A key innovation on the WARP TT is a modular cockpit allowing the rider the ability to adjust the aero position depending on personal preferences and race conditions.

LET’S LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER Cycle Safe Bahrain will be seen appearing around the Kingdom over the following months. It is an initiative by PowerUp and TriLife to promote safety and awareness for cyclists and motorists sharing the road.

in partnership with

THE TEAM C LEADER VINCENZO NIBALI

ycling enthusiasts would definitely recognise his name for the Italian professional road bicycle racer is considered as one of the strongest stage race riders in the world today. The 2010 Vuelta a España, 2014 Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia champion (2013 and 2016), made him one of six cyclists who have won the three Grand Tours in their career. As Vincenzo Nibali tells about his trainings, winnings and heroes, find out how the champion’s fame and notoriety have taken over the world of cycling.

During his visit to Bahrain in October 2016, PowerUp had a great opportunity to have a chat with one of the toughest cycling champions in the world “The Shark” Vincenzo Nibali, the team leader of the new Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team.

ON HIS VISIT TO BAHRAIN The first time the champion set on foot in Bahrain was when he met with HH Sheikh Nasser for a casual ride together. He considered this invitation as a great honour up to this day as it paved the way for the opportunity to introduce the cycling world into the Kingdom. Bahrain to him is like a home as it allowed him to enjoy and relax the perfect weather and the warm welcome of its people while being on the top of his game.

BEGINNINGS

36

It was his father, Salvatore, a great cycling fan, who has directed little Vincenzo towards the cycling world. His father inculcated him discipline and drive that made the champion have a clear success

immediately making his mark and putting his record straight which made it impossible not to recognize his talent. All his experiences have been important steps in his career which are marked by sacrifices that have shaped his character.

THE VICTORIOUS “SHARK” The story of the nickname “The Shark of the Strait” was a very long one as he mentioned it being linked to his friends and fans club. He said, “Eddy Lanzo the President of the fan club gave me this nickname because of my way of riding which is ‘always attacking.’ I’m not a very fast rider and so I’ve always tried to attack from far away to blow up the race and to try to take a win. This is how I got my nickname.”

ON HIS TAKE ON THE NEW PROJECT: THE BAHRAIN MERIDA Vincenzo Nibali being the saving grace of Italian cycling is now the team leader of the Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team project. In the recent years, the Italian champion has been with many great projects. He turned pro at a very young age with the Fassa Bortolo. The Team had some issues which made him move to Liquigas. Liguigas has built a team around a group of young riders like himself, to make them grow for the future as they reach their aims set. After that, he

37

joined the Astana where he has achieved huge successes. Even from day one, the Italian champion always believed in the project of Bahrain Merida as he is certain of its great successes in the future. “The team is brand new but the people behind this project are very professional group who is working together for in achieving its goals,” he explained. Nibali believes that it is a team with huge ambitions. His biggest aim for the team is winning the Grand Tours.

THE FUTURE OF 2017 IN NIBALI’S EYES

reference point. He considered this season as extreme as he felt the pressure being the main fans favourite to win. He added that the race itself was exhausting but he managed to cope with this pressure and provided a big show. The team worked brilliantly during the entire Giro. He showed his class and has set the bar high. Nibali said he will never forget the people who believed in him till the end and worked hard to secure his success.

DEFENDING THE TITLE IN GIRO D’ITALIA

His aspirations for 2017 are crystal clear. He aims to join the Grand Tours. The Centenary edition of the Giro will take place in 2017, Nibali said he will not miss the opportunity to compete and defend his title with the race passing through Messina, his home town. He is determined to try again and give back to his fans especially in Italy for their constant support.

This year, Nibali will be racing with the Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team in getting back the championship. According to Nibali, “In Bahrain Merida Team, there are a lot of great riders. The team has been built up particularly for the Grand Tours. I know many of them in the team. Javi Moreno, Valerio Agnoli and Ion Izaguirre are very professional riders. They will surely be a big help in the Giro d’Italia.”

ON THE GIRO D’ITALIA 2016

2017 GIRO COMPETITORS

Cycling is full of surprises and Giro 2016 has been a challenging one for him. The media pressure was extremely overwhelming and for many riders, he was the

GRAND TOUR TRIPLE CROWN WINNER

Fabio Aru was Nibali’s teammate when he won Giro d’Italia race and received his first maglia rosa. The year 2017 will see the battle of these two former teammates competing for the podium.

Winning three Grand Tours, the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España is one of the ultimate achievements a professional cyclist can get in his career. Vincenzo is one of the only six riders in history who won all three Grand Tours as of 2016.

“Thinking of Giro I believe that there will be many stages where the strongest contender will come out during the first week in Mount Etna. The Block Haus is next, then climbing Stelvio stage twice will be a very difficult stage for all the riders. My main rivals in this race would be Fabio Aru, Chavez and Kruijshwijk but all riders are of great importance,” Nibali said.

When asked how it feels winning the Grand Tour Triple Crown Vincenzo humbly replied, “It’s difficult. I don’t even think about it. Whenever I have some free time, I go back and watch some of my victories. It makes me realize that I have done something incredible. Maybe I don’t appreciate it as much now, but there will come a time that I will appreciate it more.”

Haussler’s biggest victory was the win of Stage 13 in 2009 Tour de France. In 2015 he won the Australian National Road Race Championships.

In his long career Franco Pellizotti won many stages at Grand Tour and other races. He was third overall in the 2009 Giro and in the same season he won the polka dot jersey in Paris as the best climber of Tour de France, as well as named the Most Combative Rider on Stages nine and 17. In 2016 with IAM Cycling he took excellent results in Classics as the sixth place in Paris-Roubaix and the seventh in Milano-Sanremo. He rode the Giro d’Italia, where he was eighth in a stage. He had other top ten finishes at Tour de Pologne (twice fourth and once seventh).

In 2016 Pellizotti can’t attend the Giro d’Italia because his Team has not been invited. So he missed a great chance to take results in a stage race where he is specialist. He took some top ten finishes in Tour de Slovenie (overall), in a stage of Volta a Portugal (ninth) and in Coppa Sabatini (seventh).

Haussler can bring fantastic results to BAHRAIN MERIDA in many different terrains. He is really motivated to be racing for this new project and his CV speaks for himself. It is the third time in his career that he has signed for a new team and so he has experience also with new project. He can do well both in stages and in one-day races, in particular he brings Classics experience to the team set-up. The Australian cyclist of German heritage is 32 years old and even though he has a huge experience in the peloton he can still have a good margin of improvement.

In 2016 he collected some interesting results, topped by two wins in the Klasika Primavera and in Giro della Toscana, where he took a third place as well. Visconti performed well in one-day races too as Amstel Gold Race 8th, Il Lombardia 14th , GP Indurain 4th, Coppa Agostoni fourth, Tre Valli Varesine fifth and GP Larciano third.

When he found out that the team management was interested in him and when he realized the team’s strength, he became certain on the idea of being one of the team members in this big project. He will definitely give the team a boost to the group of riders for the GC of tours. He is a complete rider who can win both one day races in the general classification of tours. Thanks to his very good time trailing ability and climbing skills. At the age of 27, he has been very experienced and has ridden for seven years in the pro peloton.

The well known Italian Giovanni Visconti he is also the one who should be a huge help to the team. At the age of 33 he’s looking to return to winning. During the last seasons with Movistar he rode as a domestique rider for the captains Valverde and Quintana at the Grand Tours. With BAHRAIN MERIDA he can perform the same role for his friend and former rival Nibali during the stages races, supporting him on climbs. But Visconti will be an important man for Classics too, where he can have a great opportunity to ride for himself.

Even though he has these behind his name, he clearly knows that he still has a margin for improvement in his maturation years and within this team. He is ready to take this challenge and is looking forward to work with his new team colleagues and committed to achieve their progressive goals. He is keen to be the best that he can be in the upcoming season. The team believes that he will be able to achieve more. 56

M

ay is the month of the Giro d’italia. It has been since 1909, when at 2:53 am, 127 men on their bicycles left Milan to arrive in Bologna after 397 km. It was the first of the eight stages, for a total 2,448 km, of the first edition of the Giro organized by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the main Italian sports newspaper. Just 49 cyclists completed the first edition which ended in Milan on 30th of May, perhaps never imagining that it would become one of the most important international sporting events. After more than a century, the edition of 2016 was seen by more than 820 million television viewers all over the world. The numbers were impressive starting from 5,500 dedicated TV broadcasting hours, the 46,000 average publications worldwide passing the 470,000 followers on Twitter and 250,000 fans on Instagram. From the dusty roads of Italy in the early twentieth century to the present, the Giro has grown a lot. Its 21 stages did not only attract thousands of fans

along the roads where it had 12.6 millions spectators in the last year, but also had a very strong economic and social impact. With the Giro and the large media coverage, it continuously raised the worldwide exposure of the country which attracted the growing f low of tourists and encouraged the promotion and development of the territory. It reinforces the positive race and educational values like team spirit, respect and commitment.

THE ORIGINS AND THE INTERWAR PERIOD Italian and French riders competed for the first editions of the Italian race. In 1914, the time classification replaced the point classification. On the same year, the longest tour stages in history were raced: from Rome to Bologna for a total of 430 km. Giro was not raced while the First World War was fought in the Italian territory, between 1915 and 1818 to start back in 1919. The Italian Costante Girardengo won the edition, leading the General Classification from the first to the last stages.

After more than a century, the edition of 2016 was seen by more than 820 million television viewers all over the world. In 1924, Alfonsina Strada was the first and only woman to ride and finish, despite a disqualification from the Giro d’Italia. In 1931, to give way to the spectators to distinguish between all the riders and the race leader, the pink jersey was introduced. This was the same color of the Gazzetta dello Sport. The dominant figure in this period was Alfredo Binda who won the Giro for five times. It was so strong that in 1930, the organizers promised him a cash prize equal to the one offered to the winner, 22,500 Italian liras, in order for him not to run the Giro. Alfredo Binda then accepted. In the midthirties, his place was taken by the Tuscan Giro Bartali. nicknamed as the “Iron Man of Tuscany” because of his endurance. Bartali had time to win two Tours of Italy before the outbreak of World War II could have stopped the pink race.

THE TOUR OF REBIRTH AND THE ECONOMIC “BOOM” The 29th Giro d’Italia, the “Renaissance”, after the tragedy of the war began in June 15, 1946. It ended in July 7 after 17 stages and just over 3,000 kilometers. They left at 79 and arrived in 40. Gino Bartali was the fastest one who

won the pink jersey . It took him 95 hours and 32 minutes, with an

phen Roche in 1987. As of 2016,

average speed of just over 30 km. The youngest, Fausto Coppi, who became one of the most famous champions in the history of cycling, won the following edition. Their rivalry would’ve split Italy. Still in this period, cycling was the most popular sport than football. Italy’s economy was booming and the Giro became more modern. In 1953 the first images of the Giro were transmitted by the Italian television, just two years after the first radios were installed on the vehicles following the races.

lowed by Belgium (7), France (6), Spain, Switzerland and Russia (3), Luxembourg (2) and one each for Sweden, US, Ireland, Canada and Colombia. The Giro confirmed to be a strong vehicle of great passions and lighted cycling rivalry. After Coppi and Bartali, Late ‘70s and early ‘80s were marked by famous Italian rivalry, the one between Moser and Saronni that divided the Italian fans.

SPONSORS AND INTERNATIONALISATION Many sponsors entered in cycling adding to the companies manufacturing bicycle, while the tour was getting more exposure internationally. In fact, the presence of foreign riders increased steadily. In 1972, the Belgian Merckx, the two Spaniard Galdos and Fuente completed the first non-Italian final podium of the Giro. In the following year, the tour started for the first time abroad, in Belgium (Verviers). In 1974, Merckx won the Giro Tour and World Championships, a record equaled only by Bernard Hinault in 1980 and Ste-

NEW CHAMPIONS AND THE CONTEMPORARY YEARS In 1990, Gianni Bugno won the Tour wearing the pink jersey from the first stages until the end. In 1992 and 1993, the Spaniard Miguel Indurain dominated Both the Giro and the Tour which became historic as they completed two consecutive doubles. In 1994, the Russian winner Evgeni Berzin, also won the Maglia Bianca (Young Classification). Twenty years later, the Colombian Nairo Quintana did the same in 2014. In 1998 Marco Pantani won Both the Giro and the Tour. He was the last rider who succeeded . In 2000 ,Gilberto Simoni, Paolo Savoldelli, Ivan Basso, Alberto Contador

and Vincenzo Nibali won two editions of the Tour, but never on consecutive editions.

THE MYTHICAL CLIMBS The Giro is a long journey through the beauty and history of Italy. Throughout its life, there were thousands of places crossed. Some were very special. In 1978, for example, the Tour arrived in Venice with a unique Individual Time Trial crossing the Grand Canal on a bridge of boats of 150m. But it is on the climbs of the Alps that the Giro showed its magic. The endless

58

switchbacks leading up to 2,727 m of the Stelvio - queen mountain of the pink race - the Gavia passed with spectacular views and the Mortirolo stepped with its prohibitive slopes. Those were among the most famous climbs in the world. Then, Colle dell’Agnello on the border with France, the wonderful Dolomites reminding the company of Vincenzo Nibali at the Giro 2001 came under the snow at the finish line of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo

NUMBERS In its long history, the Giro has more than 346,000 km path.

If he had cycled to the Moon with an average distance 384,400 km, it would have been about 90% of the entire route. More than 5,000 riders participated in the Giro: 2,750 Italian and 2,400 foreigners. The longest solo breakaway was nearly 240 km. It was in 1913 starring the Italian Clemente Canepari during the stage Campobasso-Ascoli Piceno. Thirty-one nations from all five continents have won stages.

EMERGENCIES In 1911 due to the great amount of public waiting for the finish, the stage ended in Pompei rather

than in Naples. In 1962 the stage of Moena stopped on Rolle pass due to a large snowfall. The stage of Briancon in 1995 stopped in Pontechianale for avalanches on the Agnello. In 2006, instead of in Plan de Corones, due to the bad weather, the stage arrived at Furkelpass. Fausto Coppi is still today the youngest winner of the Giro: in 1940 when he won at 20 years 8 months 25 days of age. The older, however, was Fiorenzo Magni who was 38 years old when he won the Giro in 1955, nine years less than Giovanni Gerbi who with his 47 years has been the oldest participant in the Giro.

To honour the partnership with the Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team, Rudy Project has designed the all new Gold collection of high performance helmets and sunglasses. An exclusive colour that will give a distinctive and unique look to the riders within the peloton.

64

Tralyx the iconic sunglasses Racemaster the HELMET Built for extreme performance and unparalleled protection, the Racemaster is Rudy Project’s latest helmet creation with an aggressive design. Featuring cutting-edge safety technology, such as Hexocrush and MIPS®, the Racemaster sets a new bar in helmet protection. The inner liner is enhanced with Rudy Project’s exclusive new Hexocrush structure. Originally inspired by Conehead technology and developed to be extremely lightweight, the inner liner is molded with two different foam densities. A hexagon shaped structure provides improved shock absorption by dissipating impact forces laterally and radially. Thus, the Hexocrush reduces the g-force pressure on the head in the event of falls or impacts.

The Racemaster is also available with MIPS® (Multidirectional Impact Protection System), which is a low friction layer that mimics cerebrospinal f luid, and acts between the head and the helmet to provide added protection during angled impacts. An easily customizable fit is ensured with the precision Retention System RSR 9 and Divider Pro side buckles, allowing for complete adjustment that’s earbud friendly. Ref lective straps improve rider visibility, and a uniquely designed helmet tail reduces vortex formation, thus reducing overall drag and neck strain. Furthermore, a new ‘Garage Eyewear Dock’ provides an innovative system to hold sunglasses at the back of the helmet, and prevents contact between the sunglasses’ temple arms and the user’s head.

Literally sculpted by the wind, the Tralyx redefines the pinnacle of eyewear bike technology. With its entirely new geometry package, unique and powerful dynamic design language. Outstanding lightweight styling and phenomenal comfort are combined with unobstructed wide peripheral field of vision and unparalleled heat dissipation solutions thanks to the innovative PowerFlow system: vents have been scientifically incorporated through the entire chassis to enhance air circulation while ensuring maximum aerodynamic efficiency and without disturbing vision. The brand new system “Adaptive Tips” is designed to ensure compelling comfort superiority. Thanks to its inner bendable steel core, the front portion of the tip can be very easily adjusted to create custom fit factor; moreover and by merging intelligently the use of soft polymers, surface geometry and our experience in bike helmet design, the rear portion of the tip will naturally f lex without hurting the riders’ skull.

Tralyx is equipped with ImpactX2: the photochromic and unbreakable lenses developed exclusively for Rudy Project. Thanks to their molecular semirigid properties, ImpactX2 lenses minimize injuries during impact of fall while providing an unique climatic management reaching a custom color from an initial clear state within few seconds. Tralyx is also available with wider lenses. The all-new Tralyx XL is delivered in an updated package, featuring a new wider lens offering more depth, coverage, and protection. Tested by professional cyclists - either with ImpactX2 and RP Optics lenses - Tralyx XL is engineered to expand the depth of vision. The gear for the Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team also includes the aero helmets Boost 01 and Wing 57. Two models extremely comfortable and proved to be the most aerodynamic helmets on the market after intense wind tunnel testing.

Hamad Al Khalifa has done for Bahrain is the greatest sports achievement in our history. A professional Bahraini team, first in the history of the Middle East that will be competing at the World Tour Level. From all the hundreds of thousands of teams out there, only 18 of them qualify for the World Tour Level, and Bahrain is one of them guys! So, each year, there are several races on the calendar, such as Tour of California, Dubai, Australia and others. But the biggest three are the Giro d’Italia, La Vuelta in Spain, and of course the Tour de France. The Tour de France itself is the single largest annual sport event in the World! Around 188 countries have live coverage of this event, with 10 million viewers only

in UK, and 2,000 journalist are directly covering the event on ground. My friends, what is more exciting is not where we are right now, it is where we are going to be soon. This courageous move by His Highness means that we are continuing to evolve into a much healthier, greener, and efficient society. Bahrain will cement itself amongst the world’s best in investing in the right infrastructure that develops the individual citizen as well as provides a better way of commuting from point to point in a growing Europe-like city. For now, my summer plans have changed, I’m planning to go to Italy and cheer for Bahrain while our team, lead by Champion Vincenzo Nibali, battle to climb the Alps first! www.powerup-mag.com

Technology plays a big part in every aspect of our lives including the time when we’re on our bikes. There are apps for almost everything and some are tailored for cyclists, from optimising gears to planning routes and logging distances travelled. These are our top picks of cycling apps to guide you to ride faster, sleep better, train smarter and having fun on the bike.

STRAVA It is probably the most famous of all cycling apps and one of the most popular GPS cycling apps there is. Strava’s ace in the hole is its social component. Many riders use a Garmin for recording and uploading rides to Strava and then use the app for checking out what their friends are up to.All rides uploaded to Strava deliver automatic rankings of your times over popular stretches of road and trail, with a GPS map of where you rode. The premium edition facilitates decent postride analysis, too, with the ability to map out future rides and get real-time feedback. The real-time feature, which tells you how fast you are tracking on a selected segment like the local hard climb, works on smartphones but also newer Garmin Edge computers, too. Strava’s special sauce is the social component. Much like Facebook, you can follow your friends and see where and how hard they’re riding, leave comments and give kudos on their rides, and post photos with your own rides.

68 | PowerUp | January 2017

WAHOO FITNESS Wahoo Fitness isn’t pretty, but there is a ton of data that can be easily directed where you want it to go. Perhaps the biggest draw of this app is the fact that it plays nicely with others. It pairs easily with Bluetooth sensors like heart-rate monitors, speed sensors and progressive power meters such as Stages. (With a Wahoo Key plugin you can pair with ANT+ sensors, too.) In a world where many companies defensively guard your data in their various ecosystems, Wahoo Fitness uploads to all the good sites — Strava, MapMyFitness, TrainingPeaks, MyFitnessPal — and, if you like, can push your data in your choice of five file formats via email or Dropbox. If you’re an engineer, or just a data hound, you’ll love the number-heavy presentation of the app, too, with eight customizable pages of data on speed, power, heart rate and more. Plus, there’s a GPS map — though it burns through the battery pretty quickly.

BIKE GEAR CALCULATOR If you love nerding out on numbers, from power data to frame geometry angles, the Bike Gear Calculator will blow your mind. With it, you can compare gear ratios, tire width, and crank length, and figure out the perfect number of teeth for your cassette. It might be overwhelming for casual cyclists, but if you spend hours considering which cassette to buy (or are really curious about bike design), this cycling app might come in handy.

GARMIN CONNECT Garmin’s Connect software provides a link between your mobile device and Garmin GPS device to share data. The connection can work both ways, with a compatible Garmin GPS able to display weather data and notifications on your handlebars. Data from the Garmin device goes into the mobile device, giving you a range of ways to display the numbers: charts, graphs, maps, etc. LiveTrack lets friends follow your progress online as you are riding, and you can compete in weekly challenges and wirelessly upload activities.

GOOGLE MAPS CYCLEMETER Cyclemeter turns your iPhone into a great cycling computer if you’re down for putting your iPhone on your handlebars. It is similar to Wahoo Fitness in its wealth of customisable options during the ride, but you also get a smorgasbord of post-ride analysis. Plus, you don’t have to log in to any site; the data stays on your iPhone. You can start/stop rides with your iPhone earphone remote button, and integrated Google Maps can assist you in unfamiliar areas. Want to compete against a prior time on a course? You can do that. Want to configure audio alerts for time, heart rate, distance or other variables? No problem. Want to set up a training program with intervals, power and heart-rate zones and online calendar integration? Yep, you can do that too.

@powerupmag

While you wouldn’t want to use it for a long ride, Google Maps’ combination of Google search plus touchscreen, bikespecific navigation is excellent. Apple has done some amazing things, but it can’t beat Google at mapping. The latest Google Maps app is the world’s best navigation tool for your phone. Just like you use your phone on the fly to find places, read a few reviews and then go to the one you select, you can use Google Maps to do so too and get there on bike paths and bikefriendly routes. Like any app, it’s not perfect or magic, but in its category, it is the best there is. The audio turnby-turn instructions are nice when riding, too; for riders who choose to ride with headphones, you can have your phone in your pocket and easily get where you need to go.

MAP MY RIDE MapMyRide is similar to CycleMeter, but it benefits from the parent company’s online history with route mapping software. The app is better equipped for tracking not only rides but your nutrition, weight and more, but it can also get you where you need to go. The app works with any Bluetooth Smart sensor (and ANT+ sensors with a plug-in), and it offers a competitive option for popular routes.

ONE ON ONE WITH BCA PRESIDENT SHEIKH KHALID BIN HAMAD AL KHALIFA PowerUp had a one-on-one chat with the President of the Bahrain Cycling Association, Sheikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa to talk about the development of cycling in Bahrain and the launch of Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team; what it can bring to the country and how it can be a source of insipiration to the local community.

C

ycling has been in Bahrain for many years. Individuals and private companies used to organise cycling events and races around Bahrain and in 1983, the Bahrain Cycling Association was established to address the needs of cycling enthusiasts and develop the sport in the country.

CYCLING DEVELOPMENT IN BAHRAIN

70

Sheikh Khalid has been the President of the association since 2004. According to him, “Cycling is a sport that many people have enjoyed from a very long time in

Bahrain and it has become part of our culture. Since the establishment of the association, Bahrain has managed to continuously develop the sport. In last couple of years, we have seen an escalation in the popularity of the sport including an increase in the number of people participating in various cycling events.” We now see male and female participating in various events. It is very positive for the cycling association to see such mix of people and he said, “Having His Highness Sheikh Nasser getting more involved in cycling through triathlon is another inspiration for us to make the sport more popular. It encourages us to work even more. The main challenge we had and we still have is the availability of the cycling roads where riders can safely cycle. The sport develop more if there are cycling routes or lanes around Bahrain.”

FAMOUS BAHRAINI RIDERS Some of the famous riders in Bahrain were Jamal Al Dossary, Saber Mohammed Salah who became popular during the ‘90s. Jamal still rides with the national team until now. He competed in the GCC Tours at the age of 46. Sheikh Khalid said, “We are very happy to see him still deeply involved with the sport. His son is riding with us now, but we requested Jamal to stay an active member of the team and participate regularly.”

PARTICIPATION IN THE LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL SPORTING EVENTS The Bahrain National Cycling Team participates annually in the Gulf Championship, as well as the Arab and Asian Championship. The team also took part for the second time in The World Championship held in Qatar last year. One of the team’s biggest participation.

The team also joins regional and international championship including tours such as the Asian tour and also travels to Morocco or other region where they can compete. Sheikh Khalid explained, “We have a lot of young riders with us now. In cycling it is essential for the youth to be trained at an early stage to be ready for international competition in the future. This is the reason why our local races should be focused more on the young riders under 15, under 17 and under 19. The association is looking at three age categories for our young riders to make sure that we have the right number of upcoming cyclists representing the Kingdom in the future.”

LOCAL RACES AND CYCLING CLUBS The Cycling Association organises six races every year in conjunction with the local clubs in Bahrain starting from September and ending in December. There are currently six clubs registered with the association. However, some clubs are more active than

others. These clubs are the main source of riders for the national team.

In the last couple of years, we have seen an escalation in the popularity of the sport including an increase in the number of people participating in various cycling events.

SheikhKhalid explained, “We now have Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team representing Bahrain in international cycling events. It will be a marvellous addition to cycling in Bahrain, not only will it create awareness but it will also create opportunity and provide an inspiration to young riders to develop themselves and be a part of the team.” The country needs to identify promising athletes who will be joining the team in the future. It is going to take time to prepare the riders for such a feat. There are countless steps we have to take in developing our riders, maybe we have to put them in a development team and once they are able to bridge the gap, maybe then we can see our local cyclist riding with the Bahrain Merida Pro Cyling Team.”

HIS VIEW ON BAHRAIN MERIDA PRO CYCLING TEAM

“One of the objectives of the team is finding a local talent and being able to develop them to compete in the international arena. I see this as an important project but it does not mean that our relationship with the team will end in organizing events with them.

The National Cycling team is not yet eligible to participate in professional riding except through a professional team.

The Bahrain Cycling Association is working on seizing any opportunity where we can utilize their expertise in training our

71

national team. We want to reach out to the public through Bahrain Merida by organising more events in the future,” he added.

BENEFITS OF BAHRAIN MERIDA TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND TOURISM We asked Sheikh Khalid on his opinion about the benefits that the country can generate for the local community and tourism in the establishment of a Pro Cycling Team. He enthusiastically shares, “When creating a new Pro Cycling team bearing the name of Bahrain as a country; there must be a clear plan and a vision. Bahrain Merida is going to be amazing, they will be participating in world’s famous races like the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and La Vuelta. These are huge events with massive number of spectators and are followed minute-by-minute by the international media. Basically, it is like paying for a huge advertisement. But the country is not just benefitting from advertising, it is also a great way of improving the image of Bahrain. It will be a perfect platform to showcase to the world the country’s approach to sports; how Bahrain is encouraging

72

people to adopt sports as a way of life. It is definitely more than just an advertisement. Cycling is associated to a healthy lifestyle and it ref lects a positive image of the country.” According to Sheih Khalid, in terms of tourism, it is a very good opportunity to boost tourism in Bahrain. People around the world would want to see Bahrain Merida. His hope is to have something in Bahrain that will represent the team. People will definitely ask about where Bahrain Merida is, and Bahrain has to make sure that there is something in the country that will showcase the team.

PLANS FOR 2017 The Bahrain Cycling Association plans to increase the number of public rides where the whole community can participate in 2017. The association is organising rides starting in February as part of the National Week of Sports or National Day of Sport program. A plan is also underway to conduct a 100 kilometre ride to encourage people to cycle, not only compete but have fun just like the group rides.

LOCAL CYCLING RIDES The entire cycling club under the association only caters for

competitive rides. According to Sheikh Khalid the public rides that he knew are the ones organised by Skate Shack and TriLife. There are also closed community who organises cycling rides in Bahrain such as the mountain bike community who does their own bike rides.

rider’s training and development. The next screening will be during the international competition which will depend on the rider’s achievement and position. Those selected will be sent to training camps all around the world, to give the team the exposure they need to advance to the next stage.

SELECTION OF BAHRAIN NATIONAL TEAM CYCLISTS

ADVICE FOR BEGINNERS

Selecting the right people for the team is crucial for the team’s performance in the international competitions. The association will ensure that they choose the best riders the country has. The Bahrain National Cycling Team riders are selected based on their performance in each race they compete. They will then select the top six riders to focus on the

We asked Sheikh Khalid to share some advice for people who wish cycle but don’t know where to start. He said, “Cycling is becoming very popular but it is important for people to know that there are beautiful and scenic areas that they can cycle in Bahrain. Not just on the road but on one of the many mountain bike trails around the country. I encourage beginners to start with a mountain bike and then move to a road bike. It will be very dan-

ENDURA SPORTS CENTER It can be daunting for a road cyclist to pick from all the gear that’s out there. This is especially in the Kingdom of Bahrain where biking culture started only a few years ago. Luckily, as the Kingdom progresses in the world of sport, people nowadays embrace it and more importantly lead a healthier lifestyle.

I

f you are looking to buy a new bike for endurance riding and events, Endura Sports Center is the place to be. Founded by Ali Janahi in 2014, it opened four months before the triathlon event in the country was introduced. It offers

enthusiast level roadies a range of road endurance bikes. They are made available only from the best leading brands. It is located in the Gulf of Bahrain Avenue close to the Formula One circuit and strategically located in the only cycling marked road in the country. Being one of the most distinctive bike centers in

Bahrain, they are set up to allow anyone from the beginning cyclist to the professional athlete to take advantage of their passion for cycling and multisport. This passion is backed by the most wide variety of inventory stocked deep, over years knowledge of cycling and fitting followed by immense desire to fulfill all of their customer’s needs. Furthermore, they have an incredible catalogue of top quality products offered at competitive prices and guarantee the best rate and most expedited service. “The goal of this centre is for the people to get what’s not on hand in Bahrain for all the triathletes because most of them are not available here,” says Janahi. “It was difficult for them to find it here,” he added. Since most of the sports shops here are specific for football, the owner wanted to make a change. The shop aims to gather all the people who love sports in one place, train, and to share experiences

with one another. The shop’s ambience is a home for the sports enthusiasts. “They drink and they chat while being able to find their needs” says Janahi. “It is not just a shop but a friendly and an open community.” “It caters to mixed culture.” “We have got the full gears from A-Z you name it and we have it,” he added. Endura Sports Center believes that they are unique as they build friendship around the community and most of all, awareness. They are continuing on upgrading the shop as they plan on putting massage therapist and a mini coffee shop. The centre is taking part in the Bahrain Merida and assures to help them in every way they can as they strongly believe that it helps establish a healthy nation through cycling in the Bahrain community.”
