FOREWORD

SPORTS AND LIFE Influencing Bahrain, the GCC and the World Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the all-round growth and development of the youth of a nation. In Bahrain, under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad, we are dedicated to provide all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is concerned. I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to teamwork, and problem-solving and organisational abilities. In today’s most challenging environment, such skills can only help individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is developing a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early stages of education. Possibilities for implementing such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome of an effective physical education. In fact, sports have been proven to actually raise IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports help children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and

how to respond positively to setbacks and failures. Most importantly, sports helps a child to prepare to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion. Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and show jumping, which have an immense traditional value, although we must not forget there are also other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us. For the above reasons, I warmly welcome the arrival of PowerUp, the first sports dedicated magazine based in Bahrain. It will be a fantastic tool for the people of Bahrain to view sports clubs and fixtures that are available on our island. It will expose them to new sports from around the world and introduce them to exciting existing sports they may wish to try.

SHAIKH SALMAN AND ALNEAIMI VICTORIOUS AT NATIONAL RACE DAY IN BIC Shaikh Salman bin Isa bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa and Mishal Alneaimi were the stars of an action-packed National Race Day on Friday, January 8, 2016 at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir. Shaikh Salman won both races in a dramatic fashion on the fourth round of the BIC 2,000 cc Challenge, while Alneaimi captured an historic double in the first ever races of the Bahrain Superbike Championship (BSBK). Race One saw Shaikh Salman start in the front row alongside pole-sitter and brother Shaikh Hamad bin Isa bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa. Driving identical Honda Civic Challengers, the pair were well ahead of the rest of the pack, engaged in an exciting head-to-head battle for first place over the opening half

of the 12-lap sprint. But a small mistake from Shaikh Hamad gave Shaikh Salman just enough room to seize the lead. He eventually went on to win in a total race time of 15 minutes 43.911 seconds. In race two, Shaikh Salman had a more convincing victory after taking over as leader. The former 2,000 cc champion took the chequered flag in 16:13:950. Says Shaikh Salman “It feels great to extend my championship lead. There are four rounds left, and hopefully we can win the title this year. Former Superbike World Champion, Carlos Checa was on hand at the awarding ceremony. The next round of both the BIC 2,000 cc Challenge and the BSBK will take place on February 12 at the BIC.

The Bahrain Endurance Team welcomes another champion to its roster and restructures its racing team with a greater focus on Bahrain. IRONMAN champion Sara Gross is a stellar addition to the team line-up. The Canadian is a 20-time top five finisher, the 2005 ITU European Long Distance champion, and claimed backto-back IRONMAN wins in 2014 with IRONMAN Brazil and the North American championship at IRONMAN

Welcome elite athletes who are participating in the IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai held for the first time in the UAE. We are honored that it is held under the patronage of HH Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council, who gave unlimited support to the sector and is keen to provide all means of success to it by encouraging all members of society to exercise, and being their example in practice and excellence in sports. In order to organize a worthy championship under the auspices of His Highness the Crown Prince of Dubai, we are working around the clock to complete all requirements of the organization, which is the strongest of its kind. Through Dubai, you can see the excellence, quality and splendor of the planning symbol implemented with “IRONMAN“ the largest organizers of triathlon races in the world. 1000 athletes will participate in the first race; from all ages and nationalities, within and outside the UAE, including professional athletes, in addition to a participant at the age of 86 years. All of these emphasize the importance of the race and its value for all lovers of triathlon and practitioners from different countries and continents. We are delighted with the participation of a number of athletes from the UAE, where the popularity of triathlon is beginning to increase dramatically. This sport contributes to the participant’s vitality and endurance to face the challenges of life. We are also proud of the completion of the events site in terms of location, planning and implementation, and the construction of the IRONMAN village that will give participants and the public the opportunity to experience an unforgettable event. Also, we have organized the swimming, cycling and running routes to pass by scenic places to give participants the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the city. Dubai has become an excellent sports city through organizing events and encouraging community groups to exercise and to live healthier, building running tracks and sport areas in public beaches. I wish all the best to the participants, athletes, coaches, administrators, media, and the audience, who will witness the event in the IRONMAN village, or via Dubai sports channel and international channels which will broadcast the event to the world as one of the most important triathlon championships and the first stop in the Triple Crown series. It also includes the world championship in September and Bahrain championship in December.

IRONMAN NUTRITION GUIDE TO PROTEIN

Protein holds the key to success for training, racing, and recovering. Make sure you’re taking it right. by Kim Mueller, MS, RD, CSSD (Photo by Simon Hofmann/Getty Images for IRONMAN)

24 | PowerUp | February 2016

27-29 January 2015

In Greek, protein means “to take first place”— a feat most triathletes aspire to. Endurance activity, especially that of prolonged duration like in IRONMAN triathlon, increases the need for protein. Strategically timing the intake of both protein and some of its building blocks, amino acids, in and around workouts can also enhance an athlete’s response to training.

THE BASICS Proteins are simply large molecules that make up 20 percent of our body weight in the form of muscle, bone, cartilage, skin, and other tissues and body fluids. During digestion, protein from food is broken down into small usable amino acids that promote the growth, repair, and maintenance of muscles as well as the development of bone, tendons and other tissues. There are a total of 21 amino acids, nine of which must be consumed through food (essential), four of which

@powerupmag

the body can synthesize on its own (non-essential), and eight of which we need to increase during times of injury, illness, or stress (conditional). During endurance training—especially those efforts incurring large energy deficits common in IRONMAN training—certain amino acids, such as the branched chain amino acid leucine, are extracted from muscle tissue as a means to provide energy for muscle contraction and prevent low blood sugars, aka “bonking.” Some research has shown upwards of 15 percent of the total energy output during an endurance bout needs to be protein-derived. Additionally, the repetitive nature of endurance training leads to physical separation and breakdown of muscle fibers, a process known as catabolism. Optimal dietary intake of protein helps to maintain the free pool of amino acids, thereby supporting the synthesis of protein and consequent repair and growth of muscle tissue. If adequate energy from protein is not provided, the free pool of amino acids becomes dehydrated hurting performance (due to elevated levels of fatigue-causing ammonia) and slowing recovery (due to muscle tissue damage).

BEFORE TRAINING Consumption of 20 grams of protein as part of a preworkout meal approximately one hour prior to starting has been shown to prevent excess muscle protein breakdown and allow muscle protein synthesis to be elevated throughout a training session. Both dietary strategies may help the triathlete to better adapt to prolonged exercise training, thereby increasing performance capacity. A cup of low fat Greek yogurt serves

MEETING DAILY NEEDS Because the human body doesn’t store protein, it is best to consume individual protein demands spread out evenly over several meals throughout the day. In fact, a very recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition revealed muscle protein synthesis to be 25 percent greater when protein is consumed evenly over three staple meals versus one meal being heavier than another. For example, a 150 pound triathlete completing a five hour brick workout should target a daily protein intake of 116-136 grams which optimally would be spread out as follows:

Meal Time Quantity

Suggested food intake

Breakfast

25-30 grams

1c Greek yogurt, 2 Tbsp Chia seeds

Snack

15 grams

2 hard boiled eggs

Lunch

25-30 grams

3 ounces tuna, 2 slices sprouted grain bread

Snack

15 grams

2 cups lentil soup

Dinner

25-30 grams

3 ounces steak

Bedtime Snack

15 grams

¾ cup shelled edamame (soy beans)

as one convenient way to consume 20 grams of protein before a workout.

in them.

DURING TRAINING

Damage to muscle and body proteins is just one of many metabolic ramifications of prolonged endurance training. Focused attention on facilitating repair and remodeling of skeletal muscle, therefore, is key in the post-training recovery period. Protein consumption at a dose of 20-25 grams immediately after exhaustive exercise is proven to boost the rate of muscle protein synthesis, stimulate muscle protein growth, and enhance the skeletal muscle adaptive response to endurance training. My personal recovery favorite: Blend one cup low fat kefir, one tablespoon cocoa powder, two tablespoons almond butter, one tablespoon honey, and one large ripe banana (cut into chunks and freeze if you like a thicker shake).

Whey protein, which is derived from milk, is an ideal source of protein for triathletes to use in and around training because of its rapid rate of digestion and absorption and ideal amino acid composition. Like pre-workout, consumption of 20 grams of protein spread out during a prolonged exercise bout seems to hinder muscle protein breakdown and stimulate muscle protein synthesis, allowing the triathlete to better respond to training. To avoid experiencing stomach upset from protein, which requires more oxygen for digestion than carbohydrate, keep hourly intake in the two to five gram range. Protein can be derived from food (e.g., turkey jerky) or supplements like sports drinks and energy bars with protein

ROLLING SWIM START

As part of IRONMAN ongoing race development and improvements, IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai will be using a “Rolling Swim Start”.

This method of start has been introduced into several IRONMAN events across the globe with positive feedback and outcomes.

a “time trial” dynamic for the race and for the determination of the final results.

WHAT IS A ROLLING START?

– It is part of the IRONMAN Global Swim Smart initiative aimed at increasing safety and reducing anxiety in the swim. – It allows athletes to swim at their own ability and improves the overall swim experience – It leads to faster swim times – It defuses the drafting

Athletes will line up according to their realistic, predicted swim time (self-seeding) and every five seconds, we will send out ten athletes. It will take approximately 20 minutes to get the entire field across the swim start line. In effect, this will create

WHY CHANGE TO A ROLLING START?

problem on the bike course

DO MODERATE SWIMMERS HAVE ANY ADVANTAGE BY STARTING IN THE FRONT PART OF THE FIELD? No, it is quite the contrary. If a moderate swimmer starts in the front part of the field, she/he will be passed by hundreds of fast swimmers which poses a needless risk for all involved parties. The cutoffs stay the same (1h 10m swim, 5:30 swim/

bike, 8h swim/bike/run) and all athletes with a finishing time of more than 8 hours do not appear in the results list. NOTE: The predicted swim time does not have to be communicated to the race officials in advance. PLEASE BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF AND LINE UP ACCORDING TO YOUR REALISTIC EXPECTED SWIM TIME!

NASSER BIN HAMAD TRIPLE CROWN AWARD

This award distinguishes the elite athletes from the pack.

“Triathletes exemplify personal endeavor, self-discipline persistence, and the pursuit of dreams. Through the Triple Crown I intend to promote the longterm health and wellness benefits that triathlon can bring to the people of Bahrain and around the world, and to lend whatever support I can to those top athletes who set an example to us all”. HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa

NASSER BIN HAMAD TRIPLE CROWN 2016

O

ver the past decade, HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa has championed the promotion of sports in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Gulf Region through his role as Chairman of the Supreme Council of Youth and Sports and as President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee. He is a keen sportsman himself, leading the Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation, the Royal Endurance Team, and the Bahrain Endurance Horse Racing Club. Following his participation in numerous IRONMAN competitions since 2013, HH was responsible for bringing triathlon to the Gulf through the patronage and organization of a number of races in the region. This has positioned the Gulf as an important stop in the triathletes’ annual calendar of sporting events.

28 | PowerUp | February 2016

The Nasser bin Hamad Triple Crown series is undoubtedly one of the most distinguished triathlon competitions in the world. Through the patronage and support of the Nasser bin Hamad Foundation, the Triple Crown will work with leading partners to deliver world class endurance events. These events aim to celebrate, to educate and to inspire—showcasing the value of an active lifestyle from the elite to the aspirant, and

from experienced athletes to dedicated debutantes. It’s worth mentioning that the Nasser bin Hamad Triple Crown Series was launched in Dubai last year and includes two more stages in Queensland, Australia and Bahrain. Daniela Ryf was the first winner of the Triple Crown Series. A cash prize of one million US dollars, the biggest prize in the history of triathlon sports, was set by IRONMAN for the winner of the series.

* Dubai * Australia * Bahrain Who will be 2016’s Million Dollar Baby? Who will be Triathlon’s next legend?

Daniela was eligible to win the prize after she won first place in both Dubai and Queensland races.

Functional Strength Training for the Triathlete As triathlete season kicks up, get the tools you need to withstand the competition.

E

ndurance athletes are always looking for new tools, tricks and gadgets to get them faster; however, they often overlook the most simple and most effective tool to increase power and speed. That tool is functional strength training. Triathlon is a demanding multidisciplinary sport calling for high levels of endurance in the water, on a bike and on the road. While training gives you enviable endurance, it is not enough to maintain strength levels. Research has revealed that beginning about the early thirties, athletes will lose approximately .5 lbs of lean muscle per year if they do not engage in strength training. This loss will happen regardless of the amount of aerobic activity one engages in. To maintain both fast and slow twitch muscle fiber strength,

44 | PowerUp | February 2016

the athlete must incorporate a sound, functional strength training program into his training. The three individuals who together have won 20 Hawaii IRONMAN titles—Mark Allen , Dave Scott and Paula NewbyFraser—all made strength training an important element of their triathlon training. All got exactly what every triathlete can get out of a functional strength-training program: enhanced strength, muscular endurance and power, and a higher resistance to injury.

INCREASING SPORT SPECIFIC STRENGTH AND ENDURANCE The best way for triathletes to improve endurance performance is to combine cardio and strength training to build up and maximize stamina. This approach also decreases muscle fatigue helping you maintain training intensity. The resultant increase in strength can enhance the skill, power or efficiency of the sporting movement.

BUILDING RESISTANCE TO INJURIES Another benefit of strength training is that it helps to build up resistance to injury by increasing bone density and protecting joints. Given that triathletes are completing many repetitive motions, they

have more need for extra protection than many other types of athletes. With the correct exercises you will be able to correct muscle and postural imbalances that cause so many injuries in athletes.

NO MORE EXCUSES

“I hate the gym” Perhaps what attracted you to triathlon is outdoor training. You could do a circuit in the park, or at your home using kettlebells, medicine balls and resistance bands.

“Don’t want to bulk up” Functional training doesn’t involve traditional body building exercises, it involves specific movements to increase swim times, core strength, and strength to climb hills with ease and power. Changing exercises like Bench Press, Leg Press, Lat Pull Downs and Sit Ups for Push Ups, Single Leg Squats, TRX Inverted Row and Cable Wood Chop will enable the athlete to train in a functional, multi-planar way, more specific to the sport. These functional type of exercises can also be done in a circuit format, which has been proven to lower body fat percentage

“Don’t have time” Doing the right exercises that are precisely designed to strengthen the

exact muscles used during swimming, cycling and running, will make a 20-30 min workout very effective, and save you time in the gym. The off season and base building periods are perfect times to incorporate a strength training program because you aren’t overly taxing your body from triathlon training.

“I don’t know what exercises I should do” Before you start with a conditioning program, meet with a qualified trainer or sport scientist that can assess your movement pattern and posture. Identifying any imbalances and weaknesses will not just help increase performance and resistance to injuries, but also improve your posture. In the pre-season and base training, focus on exercises to improve the weaker areas, as well as full body, multi-joint movements in a circuit format. In-season exercises should focus more on maintenance of the strength and endurance gained from the preseason. ANOTHER CHAMPION IN THE ROSTER Stellar champ Sara Gross is the latest in the line-up of Bahrain Endurance 13, a team famed for their exploits in athleticism.

“Sports

is a place where people come together as equals and I think triathlon is a wonderful starting point for meaningful dialogue. I look forward to being part of that process”. Sara Gross

I

ronman champion, Sara Gross, is a 20-time Top 5 IRONMAN finisher, the 2005 ITU European Long Distance Champion, who claimed back to back IRONMAN wins in 2014 with IRONMAN Brazil and the North American Championship at IRONMAN Mont Tremblant. Aside from her athletic feats, Sara is also accomplished in the academe, having achieved a PhD in Ancient History and Religion with a dissertation in the field of women’s history. A passionate advocate for women in sports, she is also the president of TriEqual, a group dedicated to achieving gender equality in triathlon. Sara has deep ties to the Gulf region: at the age of 14, she moved to the United Arab Emirates with her family, where she took up running and swimming and she went to high school. Her family called that country home for 20 years. She has also been to Bahrain on a number of occasions as her mother spent five years just over the causeway in Saudi Arabia. She says “The Bahrain Endurance Team brings together many of the things I feel passionate about—religion, culture, politics, and triathlon.

Having gone to school in Al Ain in Abu Dhabi, I have come to love the Middle Eastern people, the culture…and especially the food. In current times, how we react to our Muslim neighbors could literally make the difference between war and peace. Sports is a place where people come together as equals and I think triathlon is a wonderful starting point for meaningful dialogue. I look forward to being part of that process”. Sara has both the experience and inclination to be a spokesperson for team members on Middle East matters. Her contract with the Bahrain Endurance team calls for the following: helping educate aspiring athletes and people who want to live a healthy life in Bahrain; provide Bahrain National Team updates; create content about health and wellness, Bahraini culture, and women in sports. Her role in Bahrain Endurance 13 has a lot to do with media, communications, and social commitments. Though she still gets to race as part of the team, there is less emphasis on performance; instead she will focus some of her energy on writing and other media work that she enjoys.

The Bahrain Endurance 13 team has now been restructured to focus on high performance athletes in Bahrain. Expect to see the team in full force this year at the Triple Crown Series, the 70.3 and IRONMAN World Championships, and the Olympics.

TRI DESTINATION Trilife is no longer the new kids on the block, but still just as enthusiastic as day one!

T

o so many people in the middle east region Trilife is still unknown. However, after a little more than a year of being in operation, here is a quick look at what it has accomplished in the past year, the services that it offers, and what it have to offer to the local Cycling and Triathlon market.

THE BEGINNING Having opened in December 2014, Trilife undertook the challenge of serving the cycling and triathlon community in Bahrain, which at that time

48 | PowerUp | February 2016

was relatively new. Jumping right in to the deep end of things, Trilife officiated it’s presence at the Challenge Bahrain event. It provided an extensive variety of equipment to cater to the triathlon community as well as a fully fledged team of mechanics available on site for any last minute race related mechanical issues. It also offers on-route mobile support teams to assist competitors with technical issues and breakdowns. Throughout the last year Trilife has been involved in all the major triathlon events on the island offering race

checks and support leading up to the events and also having a shop on site for last minute requirements, bike checks and problem solving. Last year at the 2015 IRONMAN Bahrain 70.3 Middle East Championships, Trilife did it again and with great success! Abdulmohsen AlGosaibi, co-owner of Trilife said, “We were received with open arms and it was great to see the response from the seasoned athletes, both local and international, who have become a part of the Trilife Family. IRONMAN first timers were also overwhelmed by our speedy service and professional staff.”

CREATING COMMUNITY Trilife also strengthens thelocal cycling community by creating and organizing fun and focused road group rides leaving from their shop in Zallaq on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Recently, Trilife has also added some mountain bike group rides on Friday mornings. Being a very new market and having limited resources such as riding terrain, it has seen some really good growth and interest in this area by putting together new fun routes to ride.

STAFF SUPPORT

TAILORED WORKSHOPS The shop also offers occasional “workshops” on various topics ranging from how to fix a flat wheel to more in-depth home maintenance tips and secrets of the trade. Catered workshops can be arranged on request by clubs or groups who are interested in learning the finer art of bike repair and maintenance. riathlon is one of the fastest growing participation sports in the world with many people slowly becoming addicted to being a marathoner and traveling to different countries to compete. Bahrain is no stranger to triathlon, with the country hosting the legendary Bahrain Endurance 13, a team that has garnered countless podium wins in just one year of being assembled. Into this background of triathlon, youngsters hoping to make it big have big shoes to fill. Enter rising star Abdulla Attiya. Competing in the IPIC World Triathlon Abu Dhabi alongside some of the best triathletes in the world, is just a day in the life of Abdulla, who as he says is “just a kid chasing his dreams”. What drives this kid on in pursuit of the seemingly impossible? What makes him sacrifice “a normal life” of studies, hanging out, and being with friends for a future that may or may not happen? Many people dream about being in the Olympics, but less than 1% make it to the top. He wants to represent Bahrain in the 2020 Olympic games; to be #1 in Asia; and to finish Top 20 in the world. Plus, he wants to retain the title of Arab champion. These are big goals for someone who has not yet reached 20.

LIFE STRUGGLES

His mother though is a great woman who allowed Abdulla to dream big, and gives him enough discipline in order to fulfill his goals. At the moment, Abdulla has a lot on his plate, running marathons and helping his family out, studying and getting enough rest to keep his body in top form. This teener has already won the U-18 Super Sprint Distance in the Aquathlon last March in a debut junior event that saw over 250 youngsters make a

“I am just a kid chasing my dreams” - Abdulla Attiya splash on the Abu Dhabi Corniche. He is an international Junior Triathlete representing The Bahrain National Team and a one time Junior Arab Champion. And what he wants to do in the future is not to be an engineer, or a doctor, or a lawyer. At this age, he already knows that he will be a future Olympian. The IPIC World Triathlon in Abu Dhabi marks his descent into the world of serious sportsmanship—as this event has featured the likes of Javier Gomez, Jonathan Brownlee, and Gwen Jorgensen. He is one of the athletes that the Bahrain Endurance 13 has confirmed plans to support in their development, and he will one day be part of the Bahrain National Triathlon team. To get this fit, he trains at least 2 hours a day, and this is on top of being a student at AMA University. He trains approximately 20-25 hours a week; twice a day. His training consists of cycling, swimming, core strength, and conditioning. But then again, most triathletes have always been focused, surmounting obstacles in the pursuit of their dreams. If this streak continues, we can definitely count Abdulla as one of the local leaders in triathlon.

A BRIGHT FUTURE

To be an Olympian takes more than being an athlete. A lot of speculations and conjectures happen in picking an athlete to support/ sponsor. But the fact is, Abdulla has worked hard to be able to get to the perfect apex of strong body/ mind/ and willpower. The spirit of wanting to learn more and to try different things in support of his Olympic goal is intense and very refreshing to see in a 17-year old. A few more years might see him in the podium in Qatar for the 2020 Olympics. And we will definitely be there to document it. Follow him: Facebook: /AbdullaAttiya Instagram: @abdullattiya

WINGSUIT FLYING Wingsuit flying is the sport of flying through the air in a wingsuit, which adds surface area to the human body to enable a significant increase in lift. The modern wingsuit, first developed in the late 1990’s, creates a surface area with fabric between the legs and under the arms. Wingsuits are referred to as “birdman suits” (after the

52 | PowerUp | February 2016

makers of the first commercially available wingsuit), “flying squirrel suits” and “bat suits”. A wingsuit flight usually ends by deploying a parachute, and so a wingsuit can be safely flown from any point that provides sufficient altitude for flight— normally a skydiving drop craft or a BASE jump exit point. The wingsuit flier wears parachute equipment specially designed for skydiving or BASE jumping. The first wingsuit daredevil was Franz Reichell.

He did not survive his misguided jump from the Eiffel Tower (which must have been a long, long minute of freefall). Following this resplendent attempt, American Rex Finney used a wingsuit in the 1930’s as an attempt to increase horizontal movement and maneuverability during a parachute jump. The modern wingsuit was developed by Patrick de

Gayardon of France which was then further developed in Boulder, Nevada by the Bulgarian Sammy Popov. Testing was conducted in a vertical wind tunnel in Las Vegas at Flyaway Las Vegas. This design was a great improvement in creating lift; it was able to slow the vertical speed to 30 km/h while gliding horizontally at speeds over 300 km/h. In 1998, Chuck “Da Kine” Raggs built a version which incorporated hard ribs inside the wing airfoils. Although none of their designs ever made it

MUAY THAI to commercial production, Popov and Raggs flew together for the first time and showcased their designs side by side at the World Free-fall Convention at Quincy, Illinois in August 1999. Both designs performed well. At the same event, multiple formation wingsuit skydives were made. It was not long before people would begin franchising the idea of the wingsuit that was safe and accessible to all skydivers. Jari Kuosma and Robert Pesnik teamed up to create Bird Man International Ltd which offered wingsuits to the general public. They were also the first to advocate an instructor program. The instructor’s program aimed to remove the stigma that wingsuits were dangerous and to provide beginners with a way to safely enjoy what was once considered the most dangerous feat in the skydiving world.

South East Asian martial arts has a history dating back several hundred or several thousand years. Muay Thai has got to be Thailand’s most popular sport which is also known as the “art of the eight limbs”. You can use punches and kicks to knock out your opponent as well as knees and elbows, it can definitely teach you a thing or two about combat. With a heavy focus on body conditioning, participants can expect to be in top physical shape in no time at all as the combination of shadow boxing, rope jumping and

body weight exercises that will strip off fat and bring out some serious muscle definition. Using a combination of live sparring, Thai pads, focus mitts and heavy bag work to perfect lethal attack combinations, this 2,000 year old pastime is not for the faint-hearted! Muay thai is actually known as one of the most brutal forms of martial arts in the world partly because the training hardens the body as a whole and partly because its striking uses some of the hardest bones in the body. Originally practiced with bare hands and feet, the colonial era saw boxing gloves introduced in an attempt to lessen injuries, though in some cases,

SPORTS & FITNESS

boxers actually wrapped seashells around their knuckles to inflict maximum damage. Almost all techniques involve rotating the body with each punch, kick, elbow, or block and the integration of Western boxing punches means fighters use a vast array of punches from the traditional Western hook and uppercut to the spinning backfist—a blow using the two main knuckles of a fisted hand, delivered while spinning towards your opponent— and the cobra punch –in which the rear leg is brought forward to feign a kick, then snapped back while throwing a cross blow. The two most common forms of kick are the foot jab and roundhouse, kicking upwards under the arm and ribs. But it is with the use of the knees that the real brutality of the sport can be seen with moves such as a straight knee strike where the fighter can simply knee his opponent, or, if holding in a clinch, can bring the knee up to aim for the other fighter’s face. But it’s not all about getting beaten up. Muay Thai is very big on defensive moves such as blocking, evading, and redirecting blows. For more information: Thai Martial Arts +973 3999 9469

SEA WRECK DIVING The Kingdom of Bahrain has a long and storied maritime history that includes fishing and oyster diving as well as numerous wars at least partially conducted at sea. While Bahrain’s warm and shallow waters make regular scuba diving a treat for most visitors, those looking to add an extra edge to their underwater fun should investigate some of the island’s more exotic diving locations. Whether it’s the Caisson wreck’s concrete and steel structure that house numerous fishing inhabitants or the ominous tangled structure of the Sestan wreck off Bahrain’s eastern coast, you will be

amazed at what can be found under the island’s turquoise waters. The Caisson’s old steel and concrete structure make it the perfect artificial reef. Home to massive schools of fish including reef species and larger pelagics including the occasional tuna or jack, it is covered in coral and sponges that make the perfect backdrop for underwater photographs. Night diving at the Fifi wreck will leave you breathless at the uniquely ethereal and slightly spooky experience of swimming around this old, sunken tugboat. This wreck, which is approximately 5 miles east of Bahrain is suitable for more advanced divers.

The vessel, owned by Khalifa Khalafan, caught fire and sunk in the early 1980’s. This is currently the most popular sea-wreck diving site in Bahrain. The wreck is swarming with marine life and lies in relatively shallow water (around seven metres) which means it is perfect for Padi Open Water Diving Students. Perfect for night diving, you can find angel fish, surgeon fish, shrimp, and baby barracudas as well as sting rays, turtles, and even sea snakes. In addition, it serves as a nursery for

juvenile barracudas, and its corals and sponges are ideal hide-aways for colorful shrimps, crabs, and other macro life. Get yourself certified by a PADI diving instructor, choose your wreckage, and start exploring! Seven fighters from Bahrain were selected for this competition, and were trained for two months by coaches Eldar Eldarov and Renat Iusubov. Training camp was held in the KHK MMA Gym with the support of His Highness Shaikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa and included extensive training in multiple disciplines with focus on grappling, wrestling, boxing and takedowns. As a result of this intense training, the team garnered five winning awards in the Championship. “We were surprised by how popular

MMA is in India and how warmly we were greeted by the local people”, said Renat Iusubov. In the flyweight category, KHK MMA Bahrain was represented by Fahad Abdulrazaq and brothers Hussain and Hassan Ayyad. They won two first championship bouts, easily overcame all the techniques of their opponents and reached the semifinals. The fourth fighter in the semifinals, Shaklee from India, was unfortunately injured and refused to continue the struggle for medals. The KHK fighters decided not to fight with each other and the coaches made a draw between the three fighters. The strongest fighter, in the coaches’ opinion was Hussain Ayyad, bronze medalist of the European Open Championship of

Ali Ebrahimi defeated his opponent Umesh from India at the finale via triangle choke in the 2nd round. In the semifinals he won against Indian Fighter Rohan Sunil in the second round by RNC. “For our amateurs first of all, it was another experience. WEIGHTLIFTING Before a sport reserved for male beauty pageants, now weightlifting attracts the masses. Weightlifting, also called Olympicstyle weightlifting, is an athletic discipline in the modern Olympic programme in which the athlete attempts a maximum-weight single lift of a barbell loaded with weight plates. The two competition lifts in order are the snatch and the clean and the jerk. Each weightlifter receives three attempts in each, and the combined total of the highest two successful lifts determines the overall result within a bodyweight category. Body weight categories are different for men and women. A lifter who fails to complete at least one successful snatch, and

58 | PowerUp | February 2016

also one successful clean and jerk also fails to total, and therefore receives an “incomplete” entry for the competition. The clean and press was once a competition lift, but was discontinued due to difficulties in judging proper form. In comparison with other strength sports, which test limit strength (with or without lifting aids), weightlifting tests aspects of human ballistic limits (explosive strength); the lifts are therefore executed faster—and with more mobility and a greater range of motion during their execution—than other strength movements. Properly

executed, the snatch and the clean and jerk are both dynamic and explosive while appearing graceful, especially when viewed from recording at a slowed speed. While there are relatively few competitive Olympic weightlifters, the lift performed in the sport of weightlifting, and in particular their component lifts (e.g. squats, deadlifts, cleans), are commonly used by elite athletes in other sports to train for both explosive and functional strength. Weightlifting has a lot to offer for those interested in high levels of strength and/or sports performance.

WEIGHTLIFTING

SPORTS & FITNESS

The sport is controlled by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF). Based in Budapest, it was founded in 1905. Athletes compete in a division determined by their body mass. There are eight male divisions and seven female divisions since 1998. MEN’S WOMEN’S 56 kg (123 lb) 48 kg (106 lb) 62 kg (137 lb) 53 kg (117 lb) 69 kg (152 lb) 58 kg (128 lb) 77 kg (170 lb) 63 kg (139 lb) 85 kg (187 lb) 69 kg (152 lb) 94 kg (207 lb) 75 kg (165 lb) 105 kg (231 lb) 75 kg and over (165 lb+) 105 kg and over (231 lb+)

In each weight division, lifters compete in both the snatch and clean and the jerk. Prizes are usually given for the heaviest weights lifted in each and overall—the maximum lifts of both combined. The order of the competition is up to the lifters—the competitor who chooses to attempt the lowest weight goes first. If they are unsuccessful at that weight, they have the option of reattempting at that weight or trying a heavier weight after any other competitors have made attempts at the previous weight or any other intermediate weights. The barbell is loaded incrementally and progresses

@powerupmag

to a heavier weight throughout the course of the competition. Weights are set in one kilogram increments. When a tie occurs, the athlete with the lower body weight is declared the winner. If the same athlete lifts the same total weight and have the same bodyweight, the winner is the athlete who lifted the total weight first. During competition, the snatch event takes place first, followed by a short intermission and then the clean and jerk event. There are two side judges and one head referee who together provide a “successful” or “failed” result for each attempt based on their observation of the lift within the governing body’s rules and regulations. Two successes are required for any attempt to pass. Dr. Hashim Hussain, UNIDO Investment promotion programme head affirms that weightlifting activities/ competitions and exhibitions aim to spread the concepts of healthy and natural culture, as well as highlighting the developments achieved by the kingdom in this field. It also targets the increasing percentages of obesityrelated diseases in the region, such as diabetes. Acting General-Secretary of the Bahrain Olympic Committee, Abdulrahman Askar, spoke with pride of Bahrain’s talented athletes in this field and of their ability to compete at an international level.

In Bahrain, this sport is fast becoming popular. The Bahrain Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Federation (BWBF) has a lot of achievements to boast of. BODYBUILDING ACHIEVEMENTS  Raed Fuad won the King of Kings title.  Nader Malalah won first place in the Asian Championships in Mongolia.  Hussain Jassim won the 2010 Asian Championships in Bahrain.  Ammar Al Mohsin was first in the 2010 Asian Championships in Bahrain.  Sami Al Hadad won his weight category in the World Amateur Championships in India in 2011. WEIGHTLIFTING ACHIEVEMENTS Abdulredha Abdullah Yusuf took a gold medal in the 2010 GCC Championships in Bahrain. The National Weightlifting team took 12 medals at the 2nd GCC games in Dammam.  Zahra Hassan took three gold medals in the youth section of the 2015 West Asian Cup.  Salman Al Kindi also bagged three gold medals in the men’s section of the West Asian Championship’s junior category.  Sara Ateeq added three gold medals to Bahrain’s tally in the Arab Cup and Asian championship.

THINGS You Didn’t Know You Could Do With EBikes by Fahad Hareb Electric bikes, or e-bikes, have been taking the world by storm with many people believing that they are the future of transport. While the benefits of e-bikes as sustainable, cost effective, environmentallyfriendly transportation options make it ideal for commuting and recreational purposes, there are a few other practical and leisurely functions that e-bikes can be used for.

BIKE DUNE BASHING Previously, venturing into the desert meant that you needed to have a fully equipped 4x4 to tackle the undulating terrain, but with a special e-bike the dunes are under your control. The founders of EBikes UAE built a bike which they named Saluki, named after the Bedouin dog, which is perfect for the desert sand. The bikes can be fitted with large tires allowing riders to easily tackle the dunes.

3 NEIGHBORHOOD SECURITY The e-bike’s silent motor makes it ideal for security guards or neighborhood watches to patrol the area. They can arrive at the scene undetected making it easier to apprehend violators or criminals. The e-bikes also won’t make noise in the quiet of night, avoiding noise disturbance to the area.

DELIVERIES For small businesses, using e-bikes to make deliveries makes financial sense. E-bikes start off at just 6,500 AED, which is inexpensive when compared to the cost of purchasing or renting a motorcycle or a car. Not only can companies save on fuel costs, but the drivers also don’t need to get licenses to operate the e-bikes.

BIKE ON THE BEACH With an e-bike, you can enjoy a scenic ride on the beach, without the sandy terrain costing you too much pedaling effort. While a petrol motored bike would be noisy and likely to get you stopped by the police, e-bikes allow you to maintain the peace and doesn’t emit any bothersome fumes.

RECLAIMING YOUR YOUTH! With e-bikes you can feel years younger, as they take you back to your youth. You can once again experience the thrill of soaring with the wind in your hair and the sun on your face. People who have leg problems due to age or injury can once again step up on a bike and ride.

SKIN CARE

SKIN CARE ESSENTIALS The skin is the largest organ in the body so taking care of it is not just an important task, it determines how we look.

The skin performs multiple tasks in our body: protection, regulation, and sensation. It consists of two layers, the epidermis and the dermis. It usually renews itself about every 28 days. That means, a new skin cell is born in depth and then moves upwards until it dies slowly and scales by approximately one month. If our skin is intact, there are no problems in completing the extensive tasks. It can protect us against UV rays, from cold and warmth, from environmental dirt and other harmful influences of our living and working environment.

62 | PowerUp | February 2016

If the horny layer of our skin, which consists of a plate epithelium, is defective, then negative substances can penetrate through the broken skin into our bodies and then also to our organs. The proper care of skin is important to preserve and protect our body and to slow down the aging process. The German Skin Care Centre works exclusively with products which are free from the above mentioned substances. And the best part is, the creams are individually mixed for each customer according to his/ her skin condition. Thus,
