THE FUTURE OF TRIATHLON IN BAHRAIN What makes triathlon exceptional is that every triathlete has a story to tell. Let me impart with you mine: how triathlon came to where it is in Bahrain today and how its future is going to look like.

I

t is the time of year again when the eyes of the triathlon world shifts to Bahrain. IRONMAN 70.3 Middle East Championship is here for all of us to enjoy. On and off, triathlon “sprint” distance was being organised in the early days at a place called “Bapco Beach” where Sofitel in Zallaq is now located. I haven’t attended nor heard about it until 2008. I read in a local newspaper that a triathlon would take place in Marina Club right next to Bahrain Museum. Catching the bug, my friend Tariq and I became

Now that we have a perfect setup in triathlon, we are going to introduce the first local Triathlon Series in the Arab world. organisers and we have planned to organise more triathlons in the region. We then introduced the first Olympic Distance Triathlon in the Island. A couple of years after that, triathlon started booming in Bahrain. I still remember getting a call from an old friend who informed me that the President of Bahrain Olympic Committee, His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa was going to participate in the event that I was organising in Sofitel. The following day, I received another call from a VVIP who occupies a high position in the government who gave his advise that if I want triathlon to succeed in Bahrain, I need to impress and make a great performance. Triathlon is a very intense activity and it is all about how much pain you are willing to go through while swimming 1.5 kilometres, cycling 40 kilometres and running 10 kilometres. It was way back 2013 but I still vividly recall asking myself, how I would be able to make a good impression as a first-

timer with only one week of training. Well, I didn’t stand out. It was HH Shaikh Nasser who overwhelmed us all, by winning his age group in his first ever triathlon! #mashaAllah! After participating in IRONMAN 70.3 Berlin and IRONMAN Florida with him that same year, his orders were clear to me and to the team that was assembled: Get IRONMAN to Bahrain! People has given me some credit that I don’t deserve. I have seen my close friend, Mr. Abdulla Al Zain work tirelessly from that time to this day in order make this happen. This man is a person every triathlete in Bahrain should thank massively. We are grateful to Bu Zayed because today, we have a National Federation and we have IRONMAN. Let me tell you what to look forward to in 2017. Now that we have a perfect setup in triathlon, we are going to introduce the first local Triathlon Series in the Arab world. In my discussion with the ITU President Marisol Casado, she mentioned that it is essential to have a local triathlon series to develop this sport and become internationally competitive. Although I share the same principles as her, I believed it even more after learning about the LTAD Program (Long Term Athlete Development). Our plan is to setup a ranking system similar to WTS. In this way, we hope to support local clubs in considering triathlon the same way they treat any other sport. Believe me, they will. For now, enjoy IRONMAN 70.3 Middle East Championship, and remember that you are playing a significant part in a story that was made by a lot of good people. Thank you Your Highness Shaikh Nasser for being a leader by example.

WELCOME

For the past three years, triathlon has been growing rapidly in Bahrain and the number of athletes participating in this endurance activity has been consistently increasing every year. His Highness Sheikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa’s vision of developing sports and healthy lifestyle is one of the reasons why IRONMAN has been brought to the Kingdom of Bahrain. His passion of bringing triathlon close to home has created the buzz in the local community and has also been a perfect platform for Bahrain to participate in an international event without having to go far. The IRONMAN race has been an opportunity to boost Bahrain’s tourism and achievements, putting the country in the international sporting map. At the same time, such a prestigious event aided in promoting the Kingdom of Bahrain in all fields. For the second year, we are expecting more participants and spectators from all over the world and the GCC community to take part in this endurance event. It’s a great honor and privilege for Faalyat to organise such a significant affair. We are looking forward to welcoming all of you to the 2nd IRONMAN 70.3 Middle East Championship Bahrain. This occasion will surely bring Bahrain’s best to the world.

On behalf of IRONMAN, we are very proud to welcome everyone to the second IRONMAN 70.3 Middle East Championship Bahrain. This flagship race promised to be more than just a sporting event. We are extending our utmost gratitude to HH Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, for his unceasing support for triathlon in the region and the immeasurable inspiration he gives to many athletes. As an athlete, you are sharing in a remarkable moment as IRONMAN 70.3 Bahrain brings you closer to Middle Eastern history and heritage. Bahrain is definitely a beautiful country. I love this place and the people’s hospitality. For the second time around, you will be able to experience the race’s fantastic course, starting on waters of the iconic “H” shaped building of the Four Seasons Hotel and ending at the home of the annual Bahrain Grand Prix Formula One, the Bahrain International Circuit. A global event of this scale requires the cooperation of many parties and we thank all of the authorities who have given their approval for the event. We also recognise the team who have been dedicated to staging a great race: from the swim safety team to the bike and run course crews, and also the medical staff. Last but definitely not the least, we express our deepest appreciation to the volunteers who shared their time to assist with the event and ensure that you have the support that you need to achieve your goals. To all our sponsors and supporters, thank you for your great contribution in making this event possible. I hope you will have a great experience and wish you every success.

DRINKING ON

Getting your nutrition right can make all the difference to getting across the finish line and having an enjoyable race. HIGH5 is the on course sports nutrition at IRONMAN 70.3 Bahrain so here’s a guide to help you plan your nutrition strategy for the race.

FUELLING AN IRONMAN Carbohydrate is your high-energy fuel for endurance events. It will help you go faster and further. Unfortunately, you only have a limited amount stored in your body and it’s depleted after less than two hours of swimming, cycling or running. Carbohydrate re-fuelling will substantially extend your endurance by providing the extra energy you need. You’ll enjoy your event more and feel stronger, particularly later on. You can consume energy bars, gels and drinks for carbohydrate. HIGH5 EnergySource is an advanced sports drink that contains a revolutionary carbohydrate formulation known as 2:1 fructose. Find out more about 2:1 fructose drinks and how you can benefit here

STAYING HYDRATED You lose fluids and electrolytes when you sweat. If you don’t replace these, then you obviously become dehydrated which can really affect your performance. Sport drinks contain electrolytes to enhance the absorption of water and help you re-hydrate.

GOOD TO KNOW: These guidelines are based on the latest science and real world feedback from thousands of athletes to help you perform better and enjoy your race more. Research shows that by simply following these guidelines on the day of an event, athletes were able to maintain their pace 26% longer(1). This was compared to their existing brand of nutrition consumed as normal(2).

BREAKFAST

DURING THE RUN

An ideal pre-race breakfast is light and high in carbohydrates with a little bit of protein too. Porridge, toast and rice pudding are good options for carbohydrate. A poached egg or omelette would be a good source of protein.

BEFORE THE SWIM Take two EnergyGel or IsoGel sachets with 200-300ml water or ZERO around 15 minutes before the start. This is your fuel for the swim.

DRINKING ON THE BIKE A 70.3 is often won or lost in terms of nutrition during the ride. Start to drink and eat as soon as you have settled down into your rhythm after transition to keep your stores topped up. You might not feel it straight away but it will make a difference later on. How much you can drink on the bike often depends on the weather conditions. In warm or hot conditions, the scientific 2:1 fructose and electrolyte formulation in HIGH5 EnergySource means that you can drink up to one litre per hour. This will provide fluids, electrolytes and carbohydrate for hydration and energy. If the weather is cool and you drink less, your carbohydrate intake will be less and you will need to boost it with gel or bars. If you drink the following amounts of EnergySource each hour, you can take the number of gels or bars show.

When running, it’s easiest to get your carbohydrate from gel. You can take up to three sachets of EnergyGel or IsoGel per hour. This will give you around 60g of carbohydrate per hour. If you have caffeine loaded, then one gel should be the PLUS variant to keep you in the caffeine performance zone. Any remaining gel should be standard gel with no caffeine. To stay hydrated, drink water or ZERO. If you drink coke, then you should reduce your gel intake by one for every 400ml that you drink, starting with the caffeine gel. In hot conditions you might also want to take some salt tablets as these are easy to carry and gels do not contain a high level of electrolytes.

WHEN YOU FINISH When we exercise our muscles become energy depleted and break down. In a tough triathlon, you really push your body to the limit so expect soreness and stiffness afterwards. Consuming protein and carbohydrate afterwards help to replenish your muscle energy stores and kick start the repair and recovery process. Drink 400ml Protein Recovery as soon as you finish. This contains a unique blend of whey protein isolate and carbohydrate. It gives you the time to have a shower and relax a bit before eating a balanced meal one to two hours later.

CAFFEINE Caffeine gives you both a physical and mental boost. When taking part in tough sport events like a long distance triathlon, it helps to increase your endurance performance and capacity. This means you can go faster than before without any extra training! The scientific research has shown an effective dose is 3mg caffeine per kg bodyweight for increased endurance performance. Below you can see how much caffeine(3) you need to take depending on your body weight and an example of what you could take to get there.

In a middle distance event, the pro tip from IRONMAN Champion Lucy Gossage is to take caffeine at the start of the bike leg so that you can benefit from it for the rest of the race. Your body removes caffeine from your bloodstream over time. Once you have loaded up with caffeine, you should top up with 30mg every hour. EnergyGel Plus and IsoGel Plus each contain exactly 30mg caffeine per sachet.

RUN BIKE Exiting transition 1 from the Four Season’s Hotel, participants will cycle through an extremely interesting bike course. Riding from the landmark Four Season’s Hotel in Bahrain Bay through the city, participants will pass vital landmarks such as the Al Fateh Grand Mosque the Gudhaibiya Historic Palace, Bahrain Museum, Bahrain World Trade Center, Bahrain Financial Harbor, Dilmun Burial Mounds, National Charter Monument and lastly the Bahrain International Circuit to do the last 5 km of the 90 km bike ride before arriving at T2, on the start line of Bahrain’s annual GP F1 race.

Moving out of T2, the one run course will loop around the Bahrain International Circuit, giving spectators several chances to cheer on their athletes, before heading out of the circuit, through the stunning and mesmerizing Al Areen Wildlife Park where runners will enjoy running through the natural habitats of Arabian birds and other animals listed in the Park’s link. Participants will need to run to reach the park, and take the scenic run loop, before heading back. The course will repeat the section inside the International Circuit, where annually the Bahrain Formula One race takes place, and where the lap record of Michael Schumacher still holds. Families and friends will enjoy waiting for their loved ones to finish right next to the Formula 1 team buildings, where the finish line straight will be situated.

SWIMSMART TOP 10 CHECKLIST 1

PREPARE FOR RACE CONDITIONS

• Race day should not be your first exposure to an open water swim. Make sure some of your training replicates real race conditions, including water temperature, proximity to other swimmers and wearing a wetsuit if needed.

2

RACE IN SHORTER EVENTS

• Being properly trained is the best way to reduce anxiety. If possible, race in shorter events and clinics to prepare yourself for open water conditions. • For extra guidance, talk to a coach or your local triathlon club.

3

STUDY THE COURSE

• It's important to prepare yourself mentally as well as physically prior to race day. Thoroughly review the race website and pre-race communication to familiarize yourself with the course. • Every body of water is different, so you’ll need to

28

PowerUp

educate yourself on water current and surf conditions. • Study the event timetable to plan for proper arrival and preparation.

4

ENSURE HEART HEALTH

• As an athlete in training, you should take the proper steps to assess your health with your physician. • Health experts suggest a 12-step screening process for competitive athletes. This includes a physical exam as well as an assessment of your family history and personal heart health.

PAY ATTENTION TO WARNING SIGNS

5

• If you experience chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, light-headedness or blacking out while training, consult your doctor.

DON’T USE NEW GEAR ON RACE DAY

6

• Focus on controlling as much

as you can on race day. • You should never race in equipment you haven’t trained in – this is not the time to test new gear. • Make sure your wetsuit fits properly and that your goggles, swim caps and other accessories work properly. • Prepare for the unexpected with backups of all your gear.

7

WARM UP ON RACE DAY

• Arrive early enough on race day for a proper warm-up prior to the start, preferably in the water. • If you aren’t able to warm up in the water, spend between 5 and 10 minutes getting loose. • Be sure to do some cardio activity, such as a light jog, to increase circulation and prep your muscles.

8

CHECK OUT THE COURSE

• Get comfortable with the course by checking out water conditions, the swim entry and exit layouts, along with turn buoy locations.

An open-water swim in a triathlon is substantially different from swimming in a pool. To alleviate stress, it’s important that you arrive on race day healthy, fit and prepared. Here’s a checklist to help get you ready.

• Identify basic navigation points so that you know what you are swimming towards.

START EASY RELAX AND BREATHE

9

• Don’t race at maximum effort from the start. • Relax and focus on proper breathing technique as you settle into a sustainable pace.

BE ALERT AND ASK 10 FOR HELP

• In a race setting always stop at the first sign of a medical problem. • If you or a fellow athlete needs help, just raise your hand to alert a lifeguard or safety boat. • Feel free to hold on to a static object like a raft, buoy, or dock. • As long as you don’t use it to move forward, you won’t face disqualification. • Race rules allow for competitors to stop or rest at any time during the swim.

ATHLETE’S DIARY

JODIE SWALLOW Take a glance at how professional triathlete Jodie Swallow handles the pressure of joining a race. Also, read more about her tips on how to prepare for race day. 30

December 2016

Remember these top three tips for enjoying race day: Experience people. Watch other people’s faces, their joy, their pain, their effort and acknowledge their achievement. The difference in people’s goals, in their shapes and their abilities is what makes this sport come alive.

I

can’t tell you how many ‘race weeks’ I have endured through my life. It must easily run into thousands. With all the experience in the world, I still haven’t mastered the art of enjoying a race week. I guess if you like resting, planning, worrying and waiting, then race week is pure bliss for you. Not me, but I do know how to nurture a successful pre-race week experience. Ultimately, that means an enjoyable postrace week and that is good enough!

EVERYBODY GETS NERVOUS IN RACE WEEK

Racing is a test of training and tests make us nervous. Test results are polarizing; you pass or fail; you win or lose. That’s a lot of pressure. Take the time to remember the preparation that has gone into your race. Remember good sessions,

remember painful sessions. Understand that if you have done all you can in the allocated time, then you have to be happy with the outcome of that work. If you are a little ‘undercooked’ and haven’t been wholly focused on the task of racing, then that is also understandable. Do not force training in the last days before competition. You will only enter the race fatigued and unfit, which is infinitely worse than just unfit. Use your relative freshness to your advantage. It is far better to be slightly undertrained than over-trained. Concentrating on race routines and nutritional preparation won’t take too much energy but will improve your performance. Enter the correct mind-set of going out there and doing the best with what you have. Sports nutrition is not complicated. Away from commercial agendas and product marketing, successful fuelling plans have remained virtually the same for decades. Whilst professional athletes may reach for a 1% advantage in nutritional strategy, 95% of

competitors simply need to drink a carbohydrate beverage that they can stomach during exercising and eat sugars that are quickly absorbed and easy to digest.

TRY YOUR RACE FUEL OUT DURING TRAINING

In the days before a race, it is important to reduce fibre intake. Fruit, vegetables and salad play dominant roles in our daily diet but they have no place on the day preceding a race. You need simple food that is not going to stay in your digestive tract for too long, ensuring a settled, comfortable tummy for the race. Nerves are not a bad thing. They are a physiological and hormonal response to prepare the body for action. Once the gun fires, nerves are replaced by concentration. If the days before a race are the worst part of my job, then time spent racing is the best part. It’s better than any movie, ride or party I have ever been to.

Keep perspective. Triathlon is a sport that is marvellous because it mirrors life. Like life, it is the process rather than the result that matters in the end Sometimes people endure pain because they have no other choice –the grieving, the ill, the injured, the victims. Racers endure pain too; but in racing,it is our choice and it is not infinite. Appreciate the freedom to experience pain as we want. Millions would give anything for that privilege

lwaleed Philantrophies is a proud sponsor of the IRONMAN 70.3 Middle East Championship Bahrain. Through similar athletic programs, the foundation continues to support the youth in different aspects of their lives especially in sports . As part of Alwaleed Philanthropies’ (AP) commitment to empowering youth in education, vocational training and sports, the AP Equestrian Team was established in 2007. The team had 4 male and 4 female endurance riders representing the team worldwide. Since the team’s establishment, they have won 71 championships within Saudi Arabia and beyond. The team donates the monetary awards it receives in competitions to numerous humanitarian causes. Usually training four hours a day, seven days a week, the AP Equestrian team members juggle their full-time jobs and studies with their practice schedules.

The members of the team – Latifa Alshaikh, Maha Al Jefry, Kholoud Mukhtar, Aya Khalil, Abdulaziz Al Dewish, Abdulaziz Al Mohawwis, Moath AlKhalifa and Mohammed Al Rayes – are devoted to representing Saudi youth in international equestrian endurance competitions. “The emotional toll it takes on you is greater than the physical one. Everyone is expecting you to achieve at your highest potential and I cannot let my team or my country down,” said Maha Al Jefry, Alwaleed Philanthropies endurance rider. Maha is an inspiring Saudi female athlete. While competing with 90 other riders in a 70km race in Abu Dhabi, she was badly injured, necessitating her withdrawal from international competitions for a year. It took her months of physical therapy and support to get back on the saddle. She later competed in a 140km race in the Kuwait Endurance championship, in which she overcame all obstacles to place second. The proportion of equestrian

endurance riders in the GCC is approximately 40% female and 60% male. Despite a rapid increase in the number of female equestrians over the last 8 years, they still face a number of unique challenges as they pursue the sport in Saudi Arabia. For example, female equestrians face difficulties finding outdoor facilities to train. To address this problem, Alwaleed Philanthropies has taken the lead in supporting female equestrians by ensuring that they are provided with the opportunity to train in safe routes. The female riders express their desire to change the situation for women in sports in Saudi Arabia and encourage more girls to take on sports professionally. One female member of the AP Equestrian Team said, “Endurance riding is not only a challenge with other riders, but also with yourself. As a Saudi woman, this type of sport has given me the strength and confidence to overcome stereotypes about Saudi women in sports.”

For more than 35 years, AP has supported and initiated projects in more than 120 countries regardless of gender, race or religion. In addition to sports initiatives like the Equestrian Team, AP sponsors a host of initiatives aimed at youth empowerment globally. These include vocational programs – like Education for Employment and the Grow program – that equip students with the skills they need to attain employment and lead successful careers. AP also sponsors Saudi Arabia’s Little Khawarzmi National Champion Team, which has competed in and won numerous international mathematics competitions. On top of supporting youth empowerment, AP collaborates with a range of philanthropic, government and educational organizations to combat poverty, empower women, develop communities, provide disaster relief and create cultural understanding. Together, we can build bridges for a more compassionate, tolerant and accepting world.

epresentative of His Majesty the King for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports and President of Bahrain Olympic Committee His Highness Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa has always been true to his principles which shaped the success of triathlon in Bahrain. He believes that through sport, people can nurture a culture of hope, respect, dedication, discipline and diversity including leading a healthy lifestyle. According to Shaikh Nasser, sport does indeed cross boundaries of sect, nationality, gender and religion which create an effective and efficient vehicle for peace. “If we want to promote these ingredients, we must work together to give our people a foundation for their dreams, an opportunity worthy of their dedication. We must give them that sense of limitless possibilities; the belief that the world is their oyster and there is nothing they cannot conquer, if they work hard and passionately for it. We will be there to support them and we will be there to encourage them,” he added. In addition to his vision of developing sports and healthy lifestyle by promoting triathlon in Bahrain, Shaikh Nasser also brings pride by his excellence as a sportsman. To this day, he continues his series of successes in local and international triathlon competitions. Each victory means achievement not only for the local community but also for the GCC. The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) rewarded its highest honour to Shaikh Nasser for his efforts in sports. “This vision has enabled the Kingdom of Bahrain to move forward and prosper while recording incredible achievements at the Olympic level, thus making the country a role model which is appreciated by everyone following the

BIKE FITTING In this exclusive interview with Spanish professional road bicycle racer, David Herrero, he shared with us his comprehensive knowledge about bike fitting.

D

avid started cycling at a very young age. From the beginning, he knew that he wanted to make his passion for cycling a way of life. Throughout his sports career, he accomplished outstanding performances in prestigious international cycling events. In the past, he was a professional cyclist competing in important races such as Vuelta a EspaĂąa and Tour de France. After racing for 10 years, he retired and his interest in bike fittings started. Throughout the years, David has been acquiring the technical knowledge, training qualifications and practical experience necessary to provide advice at a professional level to cycling practitioners of all levels.

December 2016

HOW IS BIKE FITTING DONE?

The first step is a consultation with the riders because every one of them is different. Some riders are very tall while some are not, and other riders are more flexible than others. This step is very important as the bike fitting is specific to one person. Every rider has their own personal position on the bike.

CHECKING THE CLEATS

When a rider comes to the fitting studio, the first thing that David does is to check the cleat position. The foot position is the most important part in cycling, it is where you get the power for

the pedals. The bike fitting system measures the power of pedalling and applied force in 3D to guarantee the perfect position on your bike. During cycling, the feet are in a fixed position with the cleats on your shoes. Pain in the knee, hip, or ankle is caused having the foot in a wrong position. “I have to put the cleats in the correct orientation and position in all directions. The cleats are must be tailored for each rider,” David said. The 3D Pedal Analyzer not only measures the power produced, but also specifies the

direction of the force applied to the pedals in every seven degrees of the revolution of the connecting rod, both left and right.

MONITORING THE BIKER’S MOVES USING SENSORS AND ADJUSTING THE BIKE’S ANGLES

The RETÜL system that David uses for the bike fitting allows a more precise analysis of the ideal position for a cyclist as well as the most effective pedalling position. This data collection system dynamically offers more accurate results on the movements of a cyclist in comparison to simulating the pedalling movement in static. According to David, “With this

system, sensors are placed on the rider’s body. Measurements of all angles of the body over the bike are taken while the rider is pedalling. I then adjust the bike in order to get the best angles for the rider. All the angles have its specific range: back angle, knee extension, and hip movement. Each angle is identified and adjusted by moving the different parts of the bike.” The data of the measurements collected by the traditional biomechanical study system do not provide a precise result. To produce a comprehensive analysis, the biomechanic has to take

Bike Fitting involves biomechanic analyses using different tools and machines to check the position of the cyclist on the bike. This is done in order to get the best fitting on his bike for maximum efficiency and for the prevention of injuries and pains that may appear while cycling.

measurements or collect data from a single plane in each phase (front and side). The Retül System’s motion sensors allow you to simultaneously collect data or measurements in 3 dimensions. This enables the biomechanical system to generate a movement analysis (frontal - lateral) of the knees and hip at the same time. Handlebars are also adjusted along with the angles. “I have to take into consideration the flexibility of each person. If their flexibility is very low, I have to put the handlebar a little bit nearer and higher. I could also put some riders in a more aggressive position by adjusting the handlebar a bit lower and in a more forward position,” David

David Herrero – Biomechanico y Entrenamiento (Biomechanics and Training)

explained. Implementing slight changes in the measurements of your bike causes irritating sensations after cycling. The Retül system allows adjustments with an accuracy resulting in perfect measurements applied to the cyclist’s biomechanics. Small adjustments can make a big difference in relieving pain or discomfort of the back, knee and neck. Undoubtedly, a customised bike fitting helps in improving the rider’s performance.

DETERMINING THE SADDLE’S PRESSURE POINTS

The system has a sensor mat for measuring pressure that is taped to the saddle. He puts the sensors over the saddle where the rider sit over that mat. While the rider is pedalling, David checks the hip movement on the monitor to verify the different points and pressures on the sadle. “I recommend for riders to avoid having high pressure on your hip as it can lead to health issues,” David said. During the fitting, he puts the saddle into a correct position and check the right amount of pressure. David explained, “In the PowerUp

51

beginning, I tested the pressure on the saddle without moving or changing the saddle’s position. If I see that there are very high pressure points on certain parts, I move the saddle’s position or replace it into a softer, wider, or different shape. I also record a video before and after the fitting to compare the first and final positions.” The gebioMized system allows a reliable and accurate diagnosis based on measuring the pressure points between cyclist and bicycle. This measurement technology includes pressure mapping at

position for them. It is essential for riders to carry a copy of the bike’s measurements when they travel. The rider can also use it if he wants a new bike in the future, he can go to any shop and get the perfect size and geometry for every bike part,” David said. David recommends all cyclist to do a bike fitting before buying a bike. It will help them get the right size of bike specifically for them. There is a misconception that bike fitting is expensive. On the other hand, bikers often have to visit their physiotherapist

BIKE FITTING REVIEW BY DAVE TAYLOR:

“With the bike fitting from David, I just feel a lot more comfortable. Previously, the bike was actually too small for me so David picked up on this and recommended that I went a size up. During the saddle fitting, the pressure on a certain area was something that I noticed. When he put the pad on the saddle, it showed the pressure accurately. Putting a new saddle on my bike made me feel a lot more comfortable,” Dave said.

On the left is the initial pressure of the cyclist on the saddle and on the right is the pressure on the wide area of the saddle where we can see the perfectly supported ischiums.

all points of contact that the cyclist exerts on the bike as well as a high definition in motion capture. The result is monitored graphically, showing a reliable data on the distribution of total pressure exerted. The system has two parts with sensors that help to optimally position the seat and to evaluate, in a personalized way, the levels of pressure that the cyclist exerts during pedalling. After the bike fitting, a report stating the measurements, angles, and distance of the rider’s bike will be given to the rider. “We are in Bahrain now and a lot of riders go out of the country to join competitions. In the fitting, we get the best

due to body pains caused by the wrong bike size or body position while cycling. One fitting from the onset will be the solution for that pain and problem. The fitting is not as expensive as buying an expensive bike with the wrong size. David believes that bike fitting is an investment for the future.

On the left column, we see how the maximum angle of the ankle is excessive and the angle of the knee extension is at the limit of the range. In contrast to the right column, after descending and advancing the saddle, we see how the angles changed.

ABDULLA ATTIYA

TURNING DREAMS INTO REALITY

Abdulla Attiya is not your ordinary athlete. This 18 year old is a fast rising star not only within the Bahrain triathlon scene but also in international endurance competitions.

54

PowerUp

“To be honest. I have no talent nor am I the most talented athlete here in Bahrain. I have to train hard. And if there is someone better than me then there is someone better. There are no secrets or shortcuts to success.”

A

side from being the Youngest Arab Full Marathon finisher and Asian Cross Country team gold medalist at 16, Abdulla is now the youngest Professional athlete at TriYAS. TriYAS by Daman’s Active Life 2016, Abu Dhabi’s only day-to-night triathlon, is back at Yas Marina Circuit. He also took the 5th overall and was the 1st AG at the 5150 Subic Bay Philippines. He has multiple overall finishes in local and international triathlon events. He considers these as his greatest achievements in the international competitions he participated in this year

TRIATHLON BACK STORY

Abdulla was a former national team swimmer before he got into triathlon. Although from a swimming background, he admitted that he never really enjoyed swimming. Abdulla’s brother had an unused treadmill at his house so he took it and started running. He said, “I started running on the treadmill for two to three kilometers a day and I really enjoyed it..” From swimming into running, he then joined an aquathlon and surprisingly won. Abdulla laughingly explained, “I thought maybe people lost their way during the race or something.”

December 2016

TIPS FROM THE RISING STAR Abdulla shared some tips on how to succeed in the sport you are in. ● You have to love what you are doing.

When Abdulla won the race, people suggested for him to participate in a triathlon. He took that advice and soon got himself a bike to join the race. It all started out with a treadmill at home and now he is one of Bahrain’s top triathletes. In pursuing an extreme endurance sport like triathlon, it is common for athletes to look up to someone. For Abdulla, he considers HH Sheikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa as his inspiration. He is also a big fan of Jeff Symonds.

TRAINING

When asked about how it feels to train here in Bahrain, Abdulla said “Many people say that it’s too hot. But you have to get used to every type of weather condition. ”Familiarization on different types of weather is a must especially when you are a triathlete. Sometimes you have to go to a race that has different temperature than Bahrain so you must be ready at all costs. However, Abdulla still loves training in Bahrain, “I love the surroundings, I know everywhere and Bahrain is home to me,” he added. He usually trains for two to three sessions a day except on Fridays and Saturdays when

“Love what you do. Take a sport that you love and just pursue it. Never be scared to chase your dreams.” he usually does a long bike ride around the region.

ABDULLA IN ACTION

“I love to take the pressure off during a race.” Like most athletes, Abdulla gets a lot of pressure before the competition, so to forget the nerves and anxiety that comes with racing, he likes to socialise. Talking to people is one of the things he enjoys and trying to get as much information as he can about the race from other triathletes are just some of the activities he likes to engage in. “Enjoy what you do in the process. You just have to love what you do,” Abdulla advises. Representing Bahrain at the Asian Beach Games was Abdulla’s most memorable experience in triathlon. That was also the first ever triathlon he participated in.

FAST FORWARD

As 2016 ends, different local and international races surely await Abdulla. When asked about what races he will be participating in the near future he said, “It depends where I am because I’m not sure where I will be in a few months’ time. The most important races would definitely be participating in European cups in ITU soon.” Abdulla’s goal is to qualify for the 2020 or the 2024 Olympic Games. On the other hand, he also wants to take up a degree in Human Resources. He encourages the youth to engage in different sporting activities at a young age rather than have them regret it later on. He wants the youth to think of sports as a long-term commitment. According to Abdulla, the more you engage in sports, the healthier and fitter you will become in the future. Also, participating in physical activities reduces the risk of acquiring diseases. “I think that triathlon is the perfect sport as it involves three disciplines; swimming, biking and running. The triathlon community in Bahrain is growing fast and it is an amazing sport to participate in.”

● Train smart Training smart means quality over quantity. Overtraining does not guarantee the perfect condition during the race. In fact, it leaves you more unfit and fatigued. Training smart combines the right timing and routines in a workout plan. This also ensures that you’ll get maximum gains with just the right amount of effort. ● Have a good group of training partners Having workout partners can double your performance as they can provide you motivation and support. Being with partners that have the same goals as you will surely make training a lot easier and more fun. ● Surround yourself with good vibes It is always important to stay optimistic and to surround yourself with positive energy. Good vibes radiate good moods and better health overall.

ENTHRALLING UNDERCARDS Before this welterweight crescendo takes place there will be a captivating undercard with some highly significant fights, which are very hard to call. Brave CEO Mohammed Shahid and his team believe in giving fighters a true test no matter what stage they’re at in their career. There seems to be no conflict of interests in their matchmaking and they are not looking to promote certain stars more than others – there’s a level playing field. That’s why the two undefeated light-heavyweight fighters, Ben Forsyth and Tyree Fortune, who both have excellent amateur pedigrees, have been thrust into battle against each

slug it out in the co-main event, and one of them is the brother of Abu Azaitar, Ottman, who is looking to follow in his dominant brother’s footsteps. The Moroccan is currently undefeated and has beaten his opposition with his grit, determination, and dynamite fists. He has shown some

vulnerability on the ground, but also shown the willpower to overcome adversity and knock his opponents out. Kevin Koldobsky, the Argentinean lives and trains in Dublin, Ireland with SBG Ireland and head coach John Kavanagh. He’s been developing his allround game and is particularly

dangerous in close quarters, where he can land deadly knees or even grab your legs to take you on the ground. With some vicious striking and improving JiuJitsu he will provide a major test for the undefeated Azaitar. This one should be a classic and may go the distance; such is the toughness of both competitors.

other so early in their careers. It’s sink or swim in Brave, no tune-up fights or padded records, both these fighters, who have four professional bouts between them, must fight to decide which prospect takes the first leap forwards. The same goes for the fight involving the Bahraini boy Hamza Kooheji, who instead of being paired with an easy opponent has been given a Team Lakay fighter from the Philippines. Jeremy Pacatiw is also undefeated and is coming to kill. Jarrah Al Silawi has never had it easy and made his name through hard work and winning some tough fights in the Middle Eastern MMA scene. Now he faces another up-and-coming star from Sweden, Erik Carlsson, who also wants to announce his

name to the world. Someone will emerge from this fight a possible title contender in the welterweight division and one will sink back into relative obscurity, such are the stakes. Speaking of stakes, opportunity knocks for two featherweights, one an experienced UFC veteran Walel Watson, the other a young, talented Elias Boudegzdame, who may be in line for a featherweight title fight if they win impressively. The featherweight title was on the line at Brave 2 until Masio Fullen and Alan Omer withdrew, paving the way for the next featherweight contenders. Two more featherweights who will be looking to do exactly the same is the undefeated Brazilian Alex “Leko” Da Silva Coelho, who brings his

seventeen fight winning streak to Bahrain. He’s finished all his opponents, but his adversary Daniel Swain is confident that his skills, experience and coaching at American Kickboxing Academy will mean “Leko” has finally met his match. Speaking of gyms, how about the battle between Canada’s Tristar, who will be represented by Gurdarshan Mangat and Team Lakay’s Troy Bantiag from the Philippines? Mangat with four wins is on a mission to be the most successful Indian mixed martial artist ever. Mangat’s record and credentials are intimidating, but if there’s one thing we know about Team Lakay fighters, it’s that they aren’t intimidated easily. Remember Stephan Loman from Brave 1? SPORTS YOU CAN DO IN BAHRAIN Whether you are an athlete or just a sports enthusiast, Bahrain offers a wide range of sporting activities you can enjoy and experience. Here are some of our favorites.

HORSE RIDING

Horses have always been part of the Bahraini culture. This country has a rich tradition of horse riding and horse racing. According to Bahrain Equestrian and Endurance Federation, Endurance Riding is a competition to test the competitor’s ability to safely manage the stamina and fitness of the horse over an endurance course in a competition against the track, the distance, the climate, the terrain, and the clock. Equestrian not only enhances your motor skills but is also good for your overall physical fitness. During horse riding, your core muscles are being exercised. Horse riding is an isometric exercise, which means it uses specific muscles to stay in certain positions. At the same time, it also improves your coordination. Horse riding is an enjoyable activity for adults as well as children.

FOOTBALL

Football is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players with a spherical ball. This sport can be easily enjoyed by people of all ages. Aside from improving your aerobic capabilities and muscle strength, this sport also improves your heart’s health. Football involves a lot of running, jumping, kicking and tackling which provide great benefits for both your mental and physical health. Bahrain has its own topnotch domestic professional football league, the Bahraini Premier League.

MMA

The rise of Mixed Martial Arts as a sport is continuously being promoted and supported in order to introduce it to Bahrain’s community. Mixed martial arts is the “unarmed combat involving the use of a combination of techniques from different disciplines of the martial arts, including, without limitation, grappling, submission holds, kicking and striking” subject to applicable limitations set forth in the Unified Rules and other international regulations. It combines different disciplines of martial arts and Olympic sports such as boxing, kick-boxing, karate, jiu-jitsu, muay thai, tae kwon do, wrestling and judo. Through the efforts of First Deputy President of The Supreme Council for Youth & Sport and President of Bahrain Athletics Association, Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad, the fastestgrowing sport in the world is now within reach. A gym like Bahrain MMA offers a wide range of sporting activities like MMA, boxing, muay thai and jujitsu.

INDOOR SKYDIVING

Make your dream of flying into reality through indoor skydiving in a safe and fun environment. Indoor skydiving simulates the feeling of freefalling through a vertical wind tunnel. A vertical wind tunnel moves the air up in a vertical column. At the same time, it also enables people to experience the sensation of flight without planes or parachutes, through the force of wind that is being generated vertically. When you are inside a vertical wind tunnel, your body floats midair. This is similar to the so-called “bodyflight” being experienced during freefall. You can easily enjoy this exhilarating and thrilling experience in Bahrain. Indoor skydiving guarantees you a life-changing and one-of-a-kind experience. Indoor skydiving is something different from your normal sporting activities and will surely leave you with extraordinary memories.

The Bahrain Qualifier, back for the first time since 2013, showcased seven of the kingdom’s most skilled drifters as they battled it out at speed on the twists and turns of a challenging track. Roaring, smoky engines added to a high-octane atmosphere enjoyed by fans and spectators. The demanding track was designed by Red Bull Athlete and Rally Champion, Abdo Feghali. Soon after being announced as the winner of every Red Bull Car Park Drift Bahrain Qualifier, Salman Abdullah said: “I plan to continue to win every Red Bull Car Park Drift in Bahrain!”

CLOSING THE DOOR WITH VICTORY

Audi Sport Team Joest fulfilled a dream exit from the FIA WEC, following an outstanding one-two in the Bapco 6 Hours of Bahrain at BIC.

he no. 8 R18 Hybrid driven by Lucas di Grassi, Loic Duval and Oliver Jarvis clinched a welldeserved victory ahead of teammates Marcel Fassler, Andre Lotterer and Benoit Treluyer in Audi’s no. 7 car. It was an emotional result for the German manufacturers, who announced last month their withdrawal from endurance racing and Le Mans following the completion of the WEC’s season-ending round in Bahrain. Also making his final appearance in the sport was Porsche’s Mark Webber, who also had reason to celebrate after steering his team to the last overall podium spot in third place. Webber, who is retiring from racing, was in the cockpit of Porsche’s no. 1 919 Hybrid as it crossed the finish line behind the victorious Audi pair. To add to their victory, Audi set a distance record for the Bapco 6 Hours of Bahrain after completing 201 laps. Following the race, di Grassi

commented: “We are proud to take the ‘Four Rings’ on the top of the podium for the last race; it’s where we belong.” Jarvis said: “The emotions are unbelievable. To take the last win and last pole position for an Audi car, it is very special.” Duval added: “We wanted to finish with a great result. To close the door with this kind of victory is well deserved for the whole team. The emotion is super high.” Meanwhile, Porsche’s no. 2 team of Neel Jani, Romain Dumas and Marc Lieb secured the FIA World Endurance Drivers’ Championship despite finishing sixth – one position behind their closest rivals from Toyota Gazoo Racing featuring Mike Conway, Stephan Sarrazin and Kamui Kobayashi. The drivers’ title made it a double for Porsche in the second successive year, after they also won the FIA World Endurance Manufacturers’ Championship. It was almost a disaster for the trio after suffering damage on their left-rear tyre and rear

They needed to stop to make the changes, costing them a few places and plenty of lost time. But in the end they managed to claim just enough points for them to take home their crown. Jani said of their title victory: “Winning in Le Mans this year and now world championship, it’s simply amazing. It can’t get any better!” Di Grassi was in the car at the chequered flag as his team completed the grueling endurance event, which began in

the daylight and concluded under the brilliant BIC floodlights which lit up the Sakhir sky. With their one-two in Bahrain, Audi make their exit from endurance racing the same way they won in Sakhir in the WEC’s inaugural season in 2012. Audi end their tenure in endurance racing and Le Mans after 18 successful years. The Bahrain marshals commemorated Audi’s final race by holding up the Bahrain flag next to a large banner while standing track side during the formation lap. The banner read the message: “Thank you, Audi. We will miss you.” Meanwhile, G-Drive Racing’s Roman Rusinov, Rene Rast and Alex Brundle were the top team in the LMP2 category in their Oreca 05-Nissan. Aston Martin Racing’s Nicki Thiim and Marco Sorensen in their Vantage V8 won the LMGTE Pro class; and Abu Dhabi-Proton Racing’s Patrick Long, Khaled Al Qubaisi and David Heinemeier Hansson claimed the LMGTE Am category.

With the result, Hiltbrand added to his European karting title and his victory in the International KZ2 Super Cup for 2016. The world championship

featured close to 50 participants battling it out over three days. In the junior final, Martins was starting from the front row next to pole-sitter and favourite David VidalesAjenjo of Tony Kart Racing Team.Ajenjo managed to keep his lead at the start while Martins was overtaken by Gianluca De Castro Petecof of CRG SpA. SPORTS RECOVERY

LIFE AFTER THE FINISH LINE You spend weeks training, creating that perfect machine, aiming to race with your body in absolute peak. Your mindset is right and you’re ready to go… You finish the race, but what about recovery?

E

ffective recovery should be considered as a holistic programme covering measures to offset muscle fatigue, rehydration, diet and sleep. Here are a few tips from Back on the Move Osteopathy and Physio Relief Physiotherapy

RE-HYDRATE

Dedicate the first hour after a race to rehydrating with a balance of fluid, sodium and electrolytes. Even in cooler conditions it is rare for an athlete to complete an event without some level of fluid depletion.

RE-CALORIE

Try to consume a few hundred calories of protein and high carbohydratewithin 60–90 minutes after the race. Fruit, a recovery smoothie or chocolate milk are all good options. It will take up to 48 hours to completely replenish muscle glycogen stores, so keep the food light for a while. Consume protein and some healthy vegetables in the 24 hours after the race.

GET HELP FOR YOUR 68 | PowerUp | December 2016

MUSCLES

Massage is one of the earliest recorded forms of physical therapy and has been used by different cultures for 3,000 years. However, relatively few amateur racers take advantage of regular massage as a part of their training regimen. Massage helps by increasing blood circulation where the acid is flushed out of tired or strained muscles which equates to faster recovery and better performance.

KEEP MOVING

A cool-downis probably the last thing you feel like doing, but a light walk can help promote blood flow and reduce muscle stiffness.

CHILL OUT Reducing inflammation early with just 5–10 minutes of ice on quads, calves, or any stressed areacan help speed musculoskeletal recovery and reduce the micro-trauma sustained during extended efforts.

SKIP THE IBUPROFEN

Yes, it can help reduce inflammation, but the negative aspects outweigh the benefits of taking it immediately after a hard race as it can produce gastrointestinal distress to an already-irritated stomach lining.

CALM DOWN

After a big event many athletes find it difficult to sleep as they are still wound up from all the adrenaline. Don’t plan any ambitious activities for a day or two, post-race.

BACK OFF

Don’t ‘train’ the day after a race. It can be tempting to head out for a ride or run the next morning as the excitement has not yet worn off, but jumping back in is a sure recipe for injury and/or illness. Always keep on the side of caution with recovery. Missing a week early on may save you many weeks of fatigue and frustration later.

BUT WHAT IF YOU’RE INJURED?

swim, a ripped calf from the ride or a knee injury from the run? That’s where osteopathy and physiotherapy come into play.

OSTEOPATHY

is a form of drug-free noninvasive manual medicine that focuses on total body health by treating and strengthening the musculoskeletal framework, which includes the joints, muscles and spine. Its aim is to positively affect the body’s nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems.

PHYSIOTHERAPY

is useful as well, through concentration on specific joint or ligament strains using hands-on manipulation and/ or taping of muscles to assist with support while the area heals. Fermented foods like yogurt, fermented dairy and pickled vegetables help aid your digestion. Good digestion is key to good recovery. Yogurt contains live bacteria called probiotics and is a healthier treat than ice cream. An athlete can get good balance when his digestion is also well-balanced.

Green, leafy vegetables are high in fiber and rich in iron and other nutrients which boost your metabolic functions. Vegetables like spinach are also low in calorie content and are jampacked with great antioxidants.

A person doesn’t need to be a fitness expert to know that electrolytes are needed when you’re engaging in an athletic performance. According to University of Maryland Medical Center, electrolytes such as potassium are crucial to heart function and play a key role in skeletal and smooth muscle contraction, making it important for normal digestive and muscular function. Include bananas, mashed potatoes, avocadoes and cooked lentils in your meals for a healthier body.
