FOREWORD

BAHRAIN AND SPORTS Influencing the GCC and the World Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the all-round growth and development of the youth of a nation. In Bahrain, under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad, we are dedicated to provide all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is concerned. I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to teamwork, and problem-solving and organisational abilities. In today’s most challenging environment, such skills can only help individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early school stages. Possibilities for implementing such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome of an effective physical education. In fact, sports have been proven to actually raise IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports help children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and

how to respond positively to setbacks and failures. Most importantly, sports helps a child to prepare to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion. Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and show jumping, which have an immense traditional value, although we must not forget there are also other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us. For the above reasons, I warmly welcome the arrival of PowerUp, the first sports dedicated magazine based in Bahrain. It will be a fantastic tool for the people of Bahrain to view sports clubs and fixtures that are available on our island. It will expose them to new sports from around the world and introduce them to exciting existing sports they may wish to try.

I

t was a fantastic 2015 folks and the PowerUp team is looking forward to an amazing 2016. There were lots of awesome sports, health, and fitness events programmed for the year. People should be thinking about losing those extra pounds they’ve put on over the holidays and what better way to do it than by looking at our exciting articles and stories. This has spurred even me on to lose my extra weight by joining a whatsapp group with my friends from all around the world, photographing our feet on the weighing scale every week to see if we’ve lost weight. I urge you to be inspired to have fun with fitness: do a handstand, try the plank, or do some jumping jacks. Whatever makes you feel like a kid again! Another thing you can try to do is to join the Bahrain Road Runners Association who will host various half marathons throughout the year. Bahrain saw its first Ironman in 2015 and we are looking to increase as more and more people take up the challenge of a lifetime: the dream of finishing a marathon. The Middle East Championship, under the patronage of HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa will greatly strengthen Bahrain’s position as the sporting hub of the Middle East. Also, more and more people are launching themselves into MMA under the inspiration of HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa and the KHK-MMA team. Gravity, the new exciting indoor skydiving experience will soon be adopted by the whole island and you’ll be seeing more of it in the magazine throughout the year. Why don’t you look in the pages of PowerUp for a new sport or hobby that will keep you fit and healthy for 2016? Check out our new and improved listings to get you started.

SPORTS & FITNESS

FITNESS

BENEFITS OF SPRINTING Sprinting is one of the purest and most powerful physique-shaping exercises. A variety of muscles are at work to help make the body as lean as it can be. Here are some benefits of sprinting:

LOSES FAT Sprint training is one of the most efficient conditioning exercises that can create significant and notable fat loss. Compared to long and steady aerobic training, like running or jogging, sprinting enables you to lose body fat whereas in aerobic training, you are more likely to lose body mass – which includes fat, but also water weight (muscle). When wanting to lose weight and become healthier, you should aim to lose fat by doing sprint training, where you will burn fat faster and maintain or even build muscles.

IMPROVES HEART HEALTH Sprinting also comes with cardiovascular benefits. It can help lower your blood pressure. The fast-twitch muscles that you are building with sprints can improve your heart function. Doing all those explosions and putting all the extra effort on your muscles, makes your heart work and pump harder which strengthen it. Also like every exercise, you have better blood circulation. Having a strong heart reduces your chances of getting a heart disease.

INCREASES SPEED AND POWER Sprinting is essentially speed training. Since sprints build muscles and target the fast-twitch fibers, they increase your speed and power, leading to a faster running or cycling speed. With an explosive start, you are putting a load of power in your muscles and the more you repeat this, the more your power and speed increases over a certain period of time.

SAVES TIME

BUILDS STRENGTH Sprints are an anaerobic exercise, this means that it will trigger muscle building, increasing the size and strength of the powerful, fasttwitch fibers.

Sprints are quick bursts of movements, and as such, they are just as and oftentimes more effective than jogging for an hour. If you are crunched for time, sprints are a great way to maximize your workout in half the time. Try doing uphill sprints, that’s what you call CHALLENGING!... Happy Sprinting!

B “A man without scars on his face never had to fight for something he believed in” .

@powerupmag

ahrain’s leading Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner Reza Monfaradi, founder and head teacher of Reza Martial Arts Center has a lot of accolades under his belt. He is a 2nd degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belter under the International Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Federation (IBJJF) and is also a certified referee. His interest in martial arts was apparent from a very young age. As a teenager, he started training Hapkido, and through years of intense training he achieved a 3rd degree (black belt) in the sport. In 1995, during a training session he suffered a serious injury to his spinal cord, which immobilized him and put his dreams of competing to a halt. He focused on his recovery, and having regained mobility, still unable to train, decided to travel to San Diego, California, to pursue his studies in Graphic Design. There, Reza’s interest caught a martial art he hasn’t encountered before—Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ). He was inspired by Royce Gracie, a BJJ practitioner who competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). By then miraculously reaching full recovery, he was able to train again. He broadened his jiu-jitsu training with wrestling and judo classes. Reza competed a lot during this period winning many countless honors and awards. After finishing his associate de-

gree in 1999, he went back to Bahrain and started teaching Brazilian jiu-jitsu to his family members and some close friends. His first student was his brother Seena. The idea for a school of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which was then unknown in the island was conceived and he then quit his job in one of the top banking institutions in the country to start his business.

THE START OF A LEGEND In 2002, he received a letter from General Organization of Youth and Sports (GOYS), granting him permission to open a jiu-jitsu academy. But he wasn’t stopping there. He wanted to open a mixed martial arts school. He began traveling to Thailand, a few times a year, for months at a time to learn about Muay Thai. From his trips he was able to learn the techniques and to get teachers from Thailand to come teach at his school. Now, he is the proud owner and head teacher of Reza’s Martial Art Centre in Barbar—a school that offers top class training in several world respected martial arts such as jiu-jitsu, muay thai, and mixed martial arts (MMA) among others. He is the pioneer and founder of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, capoeira, and MMA in Bahrain. He is also the president of the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Federation under the Bahrain Martial Arts Association. The centre is affiliated with the number one jiu-jitsu association in the world, Alliance, and when stepping

into its facilities, one cannot help but take notice of the countless medals on display, many won by Monfaradi himself, but most won by his students.

AN ALLIANCE OF CHAMPIONS

It has also partnered up with one of the world’s leading Mixed Martial Arts gym, King’s MMA. Appropriately known as “the champion’s factory”, King’s MMA is the training ground of some of the world’s top MMA fighters and champions. At the 2012 world MMA Awards, King’s MMA was nominated as Best Gym of the Year, while Master Rafael Cordeiro, founder and chief of King’s, was Best Coach of the Year. Says Cordeiro “This is a great opportunity for us to show the techniques of a lot of our guys who fight in the UFC and build our own champions in Bahrain”. Don’t be fooled, this gym is not all about fighting. Jiu-jitsu and other forms of martial arts teaches not just physical strength, but also self-discipline, compassion, and humility. As Master Cordeiro says “It doesn’t matter if they want to fight

18 | PowerUp | January 2016

or not. The way we train will give them lessons they will take with them for the rest of their lives”. Reza has been juggling roles as a competitor and teacher over the past several years, fighting for medals, and representing Bahrain in many top international competitions and then passing on his many hardearned lessons to those who followed him. But while he possesses the knowledge and skill to remain as one of the top competitors in the global sporting arena, it is his role as a mentor, teaching and molding pupils into champions that he is most passionate about. Reza and Cordeiro share many of the same traits and experiences; having done everything in martial arts, now they feel the need to give back to the community that has nurtured their talents. As Cordeiro says (and Reza also feels) “I am in another step of my life now teaching big, big

champions”. In Reza’s studio, he teaches big, big champions indeed. His champions include winners of international competitions including the Pan American Championship and the World Championships in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Reza’s Martial Art Centre caters to the whole family. As Master Cordeiro says “I was pleased [during my visit] to see a lot of girls and women on the mat. This is very important for any gym, it shows you what martial arts is all about. Sometimes you go to an MMA gym and you see big guys with a bad face and you feel afraid; but when there are girls and kids around, it feels more like a family place with a good atmosphere”.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was created as a marketing tool for the Gracie family (who popularized jiu-jitsu) to promote the effectiveness of jiu-jitsu against other martial art systems. The first MMA fight in history happened in Shanghai in 1909. That’s right it all started with the Chinese. America’s first MMA fighter was President Theodore Roosevelt. He wrestled, boxed, and practiced judo most of his life and actually was the first American to have earned a brown belt.

And this is exactly why Motorcity Bahrain organized the “Subaru in Motion Family and Track Day” event at the Bahrain International Circuit. The programme included an F1 track experience for Subaru enthusiasts and for Subaru owners. Over 200 Subaru owners with their family and friends and 400 participants showed up at the event. It also featured kid’s entertainment, games, food and beverage, and live music. Participants had the chance to choose from a wide range of Subaru Demo cars for a test drive on the exclusive F1 track. They were even given a formal introduction by the BIC staff on how to technically drive on the F1 track. They were also instructed on how to get the best out of the car on track in a controlled and non-competitive environment. “Driving on the F1 track was an unforgettable experience, I would like to thank Motorcity for giving us the opportunity to drive our cars and feel special” expressed Mr. Abdallah. Extreme sports are the ultimate adrenaline rush, a way to defy gravity and live life to the fullest. In this section we take a look at some extreme actions we can do or look forward to in Bahrain.

Adrenaline

PARACHUTING Are you ready to free-fall?

Parachuting or skydiving is the method of exiting an aircraft and returning to Earth with the aid of gravity, then slowing down during the last part of the descent by using a parachute. It may involve free-fall, a time during which the parachute has not been deployed and the body gradually accelerates to terminal velocity. In this sport, you will jump, dive, fall, float, and land. The military developed parachuting technology as a way to save aircrews from 22

| PowerUp | January 2016

emergencies aboard balloons and aircraft in flight, and later as a way of delivering soldiers to battlefields. Occasionally, forest fighters, known as “smokejumpers” in the USA, use parachuting as a means of rapidly inserting themselves near forest fires in especially remote or otherwise inaccessible locations. Competitions developed in the 1930’s and parachuting became an international sport in 1952. As a recreational activity, it is widely considered as an extreme sport because of the risk involved. Jumping out of an aircraft at 13,000 feet and plunging down to earth at speeds of over

120 mph is the experience of a lifetime! If you want extraordinary, there’s no better thrill! But despite the perception of danger, fatalities in this sport are rare. About 21 skydivers are confirmed killed each year in the US, roughly one death for every 150,000 jumps (which is statistically less than 1%). If you are ready to jump out of an airplane, if you want to experience the thrill of freefall, if you want to know how peaceful and silent parachuting through infinite space feels, then this may be the sport for you. For first time parachuters, it is normally recommended

to do the tandem skydive, where your instructor is actually attached to your harness. Many skydiving ventures now offer video packages, that will serve as proof to any doubters that you actually parachuted from an airplane. Due to the hazardous nature of skydiving, the greatest of precautions are taken to avoid parachuting injuries and death. For firsttime solo parachutists, this involves four to eight hours of ground instruction. While still not available in Bahrain, we hope that this air sport will take off soon!

CAPOEIRA An intangible cultural heritage

“Do one thing every day that scares you.”– Eleanor Roosevelt

@powerupmag

This Afro-Brazilian, nonviolent martial arts offer practitioners a unique blend of live traditional music, aerobatics, and combat techniques. Originating from 16th century slaves who were prohibited from engaging in live combat, it has evolved to tell the heart-wrenching story of this populace through musical instruments, singing, and ritual sparring. Disguised at first as a dance form, it has evolved to become a source of freedom from slavery and mental oppression. Today it is practised worldwide and has in fact been granted a special protected status as “intangible cultural heritage” by UNESCO. During the early days of the Portuguese colonial empire, thousands of slaves came to

Portugal to provide labor for the sugar cane plantations. They were often living in inhumane and humiliating conditions, forced to work hard and physically punished for the smallest misbehaviour. In this environment, capoeira was born as a simple hope for survival, allowing escaped slaves, who were completely unequipped to face the hostile, unknown land, to dodge the hunt of the “capitaes-do-mato,” the armed and mounted colonial agents who were charged with finding and capturing escapees. After a while, groups of escaped slaves formed settlements of their own called the quilombo. In the quilombo, which was constantly threatened by Portuguese colonial troops, capoeira evolved from a

and toned physique.

For more information: Luciano de Silva 3222 6855

FUN FACTS Portuguese soldiers sometimes said that it took more than one dragoon (platoon) to capture a quilombo warrior, since they would defend themselves with a strangely moving fighting technique. From this early martial art beginnings, capoeira has evolved into a lively game, played rather than fought, in a ro-da (pronounced ho-da), the Portuguese word for a circle. In Bahrain, this sport is fast becoming a popular one.

WAKEBOARDING Go full-throttle Another watersport which has been making waves with local thrill seekers is wakeboarding. Get ready for the ride of your life as you are towed at full throttle behind a speeding waterboat while attached to a wakeboard. Once up, you can utilise the awesome power of the boat’s wake to attempt impressive stunts and jumps, or just enjoy the feeling of skimming through the waves. While it can be slightly frustrating for beginners, who will find themselves face planting the salty sea surface at high speeds during their first few attempts, a few lessons at wakeboarding will have you zooming along like a pro in no time. Wakeboarding is a surface water sport which involves riding a wakeboard over the surface of a body of water. It was developed from a combination of water skiing, snowboarding, and surfing techniques. The good thing about wakeboarding is that there are so many tricks to learn because the

24 | PowerUp | January 2016

wake of the boat acts as a jump. Wakeboarding is best practiced behind a towboat or wakeboat with a distinct hull design, engine types and accessories, such as a wakeboard tower to mount the rope, and ballast tanks used to generate the wake. The hull design, ballast tanks, and special wave plates help create the different types of wake shapes while the higher torque V-drive engines help keep the boat on a straight course while pulling the riders with ease. Founded in 1964 and organized by the International Waterski Federation, it was recognized by the International Olympic Committee as an official partner since 1967. Wakeboarding has been part of the World Games since 2005, in the trend sports category. Recently, wakeboarding was added as a competitive sport in the X-Games II. The term “wakeboarding” was coined by Paul Fraser from Vancouver, Canada. Paul approached Herb O’Brien of HO Sports, and Herb went on to manufacture

and sell the “Hyperlite” wakeboard in January 1991; these were the world’s first compression molded boards. The new manufacturing technique redefined the sport: skiboarding became wakeboarding. The neutral flotation of the Hyperlite allowed for much easier starts, and the sport became available to a wider demographic. In Bahrain, there are many places to wakeboard, most especially in Durrat Al Bahrain. Many top tier athletes also go to Bahrain to practice their skills, so there’s a good chance you’re gonna be wakeboarding side by side with these extreme athletes! Awesomeness! Would you be capable of performing simple physical tasks that could save your life if the need arose? And what if, the ultimate apocalyptic scenario arose and there are zombies in your backyard. Can you outrun them? Can you outwit them? Here we’ve outlined some possible physical fitness tactics to outrun zombies and some exercises you can do in the meantime to prepare for the upcoming apocalypse.

They’re right behind you, and you need to outrun them, run through them, or run around them. Either way, you have to keep moving. The thing about zombies is they are fairly slow-moving, but their numbers are big. Changing tactics and directions is a pretty good bet to outwit them. Shuttle runs will build up that agility muscle for you. Agility is often explained as being your ability to respond quickly to external stimuli and dodging a zombie is a perfect example of why you need to hone this skill. Research suggests that sprinting is one of the fundamental movement patterns that helped us survive the evolution process so if you want to continue this survival trend, you had better get your sprint on. Incidentally, as well as being a useful survival tool, sprinting helps improve your muscle tone, increase anabolic hormone concentrations, lower your body fat levels, improve your aerobic and anaerobic fitness, and target the 2b-fast twitch muscle fibers so you’ll feel better too.

A race on the stairs is often an ingredient of classic action movie scenes. And are you up for it? Do you get exhausted after one flight or can you keep going up to twenty flights? This is all about your endurance and stamina, and you can start doing this today. Climbing stairs could literally save your life. You can also run, squat, lunge, sprint, and broad jump to build up this kind of endurance.

HORSE-RIDING

SPORTS TIPS

HORSE-RIDING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS

Horse riding might seem daunting to a lot of people, but there are ways to be able to ride with ease and grace. Captain Sami Ghazwan of the Bahrain Riding School shows us how.

OVERALL ALIGNMENT When you ride a horse, you should be able to draw a straight line through the ear, shoulder, hip, and heel. Shoulders should be even and straight. You should sit on the sit bones without rounding or overarching the lower back.

HOLD THE REINS Hold your reins evenly and don’t have too much slack in them. Horses move their heads when they move, and if a rider does not accommodate this movement, they will have the reins pulled through their hands.

DISMOUNTING A HORSE

A

lthough people may not think “fitness” when they consider taking the reins, horseback riding can be a serious butt-kicking exercise. It may look like the horse is getting all the exercise, but it takes balance, strong legs, and a stable core to stay in the saddle. This old school hobby is an awesome way to spend some quality time in the great outdoors and get beyond a basic gym routine.

DRESSING THE PART The minimum attire for horse riding is jeans and closed shoes with a helmet. This is for your own safety and must be observed at all times. Wear long pants to protect legs from chafing against the saddle. Avoid all clothing that could get tangled in equipment including scarves, thin tank top straps, and

30 | PowerUp | January 2016

GETTING ON A HORSE All good stables have a mounting block that allows beginners to get on their horse without fuss. Stick your left toe in the stirrup and hold the reins in the left hand resting it on the front of the saddle. Put the right hand on the back of the saddle and gently hoist yourself up, swinging the right leg carefully over the horse’s back. Once one leg is on either side of the horse, sit down gently in the saddle and place the right foot in the right stirrup.

1

To dismount from a horse or pony, first remove both feet from the stirrups. Then hold the reins in the left hand while holding the pommel of the saddle. In one flowing movement, lean forward, lift the right leg and swing it over the horse’s hindquarters and land on the ground beside the horse.

2

Health Benefits of Horseback Riding

3

CORE STRENGTH Horseback riding is an isometric exercise, because of this, postural strength is very important when riding and the posture of riders improves even in day to day activities. MUSCLE TONE AND FLEXIBILITY Riders often have to maintain a squatting position while they ride, constantly adjusting to the cadence of the horse. This exercise helps with good overall muscle tone and flexibility.

Begin on all fours with your knees hip-width apart and your wrists stacked over your shoulders. Lift your left knee toward the ceiling, then extend the left foot straight out to the side. Pause, before you bend your knee again, and bring your leg back to starting position. Repeat for 45 to 60 seconds on the left side before you switch to the right.

HIP-LIFT PROGRESSION

This is an awesome way to relieve tension in your lower back and work your butt at the same time. (Have a yoga mat or something cushy to support your tailbone while you work out). Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor near your butt and hip-width apart. Keeping your knees in line, extend one leg. On your exhale, squeeze your glutes and push your hips up toward the ceiling as far as you can go. Pause, then lower until your butt hovers right above the floor, and repeat without touching the ground.

If any sport serves up serious style, bowling must be that sport, requiring nimbleness and grace.

R

ip Van Winkle was done in by a game of nine-pins up in New York’s Catskill Mountains. After being tired from such exertions with magical creatures he fell into a deep sleep that lasted for fourteen years. Bowling nowadays doesn’t have that same glamour or the dangers that come with it, but it is still a very elegant game requiring dexterity, precision, and skill. Bowling is one of the major throwing sports, in which a player throws or rolls a bowling ball towards a target. In pinbowling variations, the target is to knock over pins at the end of the lane. It is played on a flat, wooden, or other synthetic surface (which can be oiled in different patterns for different techniques). The objective is to score points by knocking down as many pins as possible. Three finger holes are drilled into a traditional bowling ball, and weights vary considerably to make the sport playable for all ages. Bowling has a unique scoring system which keeps track not only of the current pinfall of a frame, but also strikes and spares which allow for the value of subsequent pinfall. There are three kinds

38 | PowerUp | January 2016

of marks given in a score, a strike (all ten down in the first ball), a spare (all ten down by the second ball), and an open (one or more missed pins still standing after the second ball). A strike earns 10 points plus the points for the next two balls thrown. (For example, if a player got a strike followed with a seven and a two, their value for the strike frame would be 10+7+2 or 19). A spare earns 10 points plus the points for the next ball thrown. (Again, if a player gets a spare then follows it with seven pins down on the first ball of the next frame, their value for the spare frame would be 10+7 or 17). Open frames count the value of the pinfall in that frame only. (Example, if a player knocks down five on their first ball, and three on their second, the open frame would be worth eight points). The maximum score in ten-pin bowling is 300. This consists of getting 12 strikes in a row in one game (one strike each in frames 1-9, and all three possible strikes in the tenth frame), and is also known as a perfect game. While professional ten-pin bowling tournaments are held in numerous countries, the sport is commonly played as a hobby by millions of people around the world. The earliest form of bowling

BOWLING

dates back to Ancient Egypt. Remnants of balls found at that time were among artefacts in Ancient Egypt going back to 3200 BCE. Balls were made using the husks of grains, covered in material such as leather, and bound with string. Other balls, made of porcelain or even plastic, have also been found, indicating that these were rolled along the ground rather than thrown due to their size and weight. A site in Southampton, England claims to be the oldest lawn bowling site still in operation, with records showing the game has been played on the green there since 1299. The sport has spread throughout the ages with betting even included in the entertainment. In fact,

States, becoming very popular and was called “Bowl on the Green” which became very popular and resulted in associated gambling and crime. In 1841, a Connecticut law banned ninepin bowling lanes due to said circumstances, and people were said to circumvent the prohibition by adding an extra pin, resulting in the modern game of tenpin bowling. Today bowling is enjoyed by 100 million people in more than 90 countries worldwide and continues to grow through entertainment media such as video games. In Bahrain, there are several different places to enjoy

(one strike each in frames 1-9, and all three possible strikes in the tenth frame), and is also known as a perfect game. in 1325, laws were passed in Berlin and Cologne limiting bets on lawn bowling to five shillings. In 1336, King Edward III banned it as a distraction to archery practice. In 1511, English King Henry VIII (an avid bowler) banned bowling for the lower classes, imposing a levy for private lanes to limit them to the wealthy. This law was passed because bowling had apparently become so addictive that many working men and soldiers were neglecting their trades. Another English law passed in 1541 (repealed in 1845) prohibited workers from bowling except on Christmas, and only in their master’s home and in his presence. The Protestant Reformation Founder, Martin Luther, set the number of pins (which varied from three to 17), at nine. During the colonial era, ninepin bowling was introduced to the United

This incredible five day journey is approximately 300 kilometers long with 16,000 meters of ascent across wild, trackless, remote and mountainous terrain. During five days of castle-to-castle “trail running” across the Welsh wilderness, runners will cover about 186 miles and climb roughly 51,000 feet over unmarked and often trackless craggy, terrain. There are checkpoints along the way, but how racers get to each one is up to them. The race, which runs the length of Wales from North to South was first held in 1992 and recently started again after a 20-year hiatus. Fast runners should be prepared to be on their feet for eight hours a day, and to navigate in rainy, low-visibility conditions. In 2012, 85 people started the race while only 32 crossed the finish line.

ENDURANCE RACE

RACE ACROSS AMERICA

INDITAROD TRAIL INVITATIONAL, ALASKA Many people have heard of the famous February Iditarod dogsled race covering over 1,000 miles of snow and ice. But lesser known (and even physically tougher) is the Iditarod Trail Invitational a self-supported human footrace held simultaneously along the dogsled course. This is the world’s longest ultra-marathon following the historic Iditarod Trail from Knik, Alaska over the Alaska Range to McGrath and to Nome in late February every year one week before the Iditarod Dog Sled Race. This arduous event requires nerves of steel to finish over the 30 (or more days) it will take you to move from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. The short race (350 miles) finishes in the interior village of McGrath on the Kuskokwim River and the 1,000 mile race finishes in Nome. Racers have to finish the 350 mile race in a previous year before they can enter the 1,000 mile race. On top

The 3,000 mile Race Across America is a long-running transcontinental cycling challenge that takes athletes from Oceanside, California to Annapolis, Maryland. This is widely recognized as the world’s toughest endurance bicycle race. With long distance road races gaining popularity, this non-stop epic ride takes the cake. Open to solo racers as well as 2, 4, and 8 person teams. Solo racers must qualify by completing one of 30 qualifying events worldwide. They have to contend with mountains, wind-swept plains, dogs, vehicles, and everything in between. Traveling with a support team, they must endure bad drivers, saddle sores, bad weather, physical and

mental exhaustion, and bike problems; however there is no qualification required for teams. Stories of athletes taking hard falls because they fell asleep on the bike due to exhaustion become in fact, true in this case. There have been just over 100 finishers since the race started in 1997, and on four occasions no one completed the full distance. Expect to be totally self-sufficient and play by the rules. “You receive nothing from no one”, the website reads. There are no aid stations or pacers, and runners who drop out have to figure out how to get back to civilization on their own. CYCLING

HOW CYCLING MAKES YOU HAPPIER We already know cycling is great for physical fitness, but did you know it also has profound effects on your happiness?

WARDS OFF DEPRESSION A recent study at the University of Bern suggests that physical activity leads to the same neurophysiological changes as antidepressants. Mental health conditions such as depression, stress, and anxiety, can be reduced by regular bike riding. This is due to the effects of the exercise itself, and because of the enjoyment that riding a bike can bring.

REDUCES STRESS Any regular exercise can reduce stress and depression and improve well-being and self-esteem. Cycling outdoors is also a good way to be one with nature and to feel the breath of the earth. It takes one’s mind out of everyday life stresses and rejuvenates the soul.

BOOSTS BRAINPOWER Think about a typical ride and everything that goes through your head whether consciously or unconsciously:

how to negotiate the gravelly corner, bunny hop that log, or navigate your way home on unfamiliar roads. So how does that make you smarter? Using your brain in these different ways while riding results in increased cognitive control, and stimulates the parts of the brain that regulate executive function, decision making (things like that). It’s like doing Sudoko—but at warp speeds— which is great for keeping your brain healthy. This is not a new idea by any stretch: work done by Charles Hillman at the University of Illinois in 2007 showed that exercise (and cycling is one of the best exercises!) boosts brainpower and helps to stave off Alzheimer’s in older people, while parallel work being done at the University of Georgia by Phil Tomporowski showed that kids are even more positively impacted –and that exercise can help control issues like ADD/ ADHD.

SLEEP MORE DEEPLY

you catch some quality shuteye once you hit the pillow. Stanford University School of Medicine researchers asked sedentary insomnia sufferers to cycle for 20-30 minutes every other day. Cycling outside exposes you to daylight, says Professor Jim Horne from Longborough University’s Sleep Research Centre, “This helps get your circadian rhythm back in sync, and also rids your body of cortisol, the stress hormone that can prevent deep, regenerative sleep”.

MAKES YOU FRIENDLIER Riding a bike can help keep your social life active. If you join a cycling club and hit the trails weekly or monthly, this will give you opportunities to bond with other people of your age group or outside of your age group. It will broaden your experiences and perspective. And it provides a very social and active environment.

An early morning ride might have you hampered in the short term but it will help

As part of the iconic Ironman Triathlon series, the flagship race in the Middle East did not disappoint. It started off with a very interesting announcement: the swim event was cancelled due to high winds and strong currents. “Triathlon is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and there has been an increasing number of athletes from the Middle East racing on the Ironman European tour consistently for the past few years” says Thomas Dieckhoff, Ironman Europe, Middle East, and Africa CEO. The next step, which was to establish an Ironman Middle East Championship was only logical. Andrew Messick, Ironman CEO says “We are delighted to be able to establish Ironman 70.3 races in the Gulf region that is an emerging hotbed for triathlon”. The race that happened was a glittering hotbed of elite athletes, celebrities, and royalty as the Bahraini nation watched the first ever Ironman run. HM King Hamad Al Khalifa conferred the Appreciation Medal on HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa and congratulated him on winning an advanced position during the prestigious international race as well as for the outstanding organization of the world sports event which is a bid to project the honourable image of the Kingdom and its ability to organize mega sporting events that attract the world’s best athletes. HM stressed that such a key sporting event has attracted a massive audience, and reflected fair competition. He noted that sports events offer platforms to foster mutual understanding, friendship, and cooperation among athletes of the world. James Cunnama, one of the podium finishers said “The whole sport will just go to the next level and I think that’s exciting to see”. The Middle East Championship Bahrain offers 40 age-group qualification slots for the 2016 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Sunshine Coast, Australia and the top 10 Bahrainis all get a slot as a gift from Ironman!

O

ver the past decade, bodybuilding has quickly gained a reputation as one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Once, only existent in male beauty pageants, it has quickly built its reputation as a legitimate sport with its own governing body, so much so that even women bodybuilders are the norm rather than the exception nowadays. Bodybuilding is the use of progressive resistance exercise to control and develop one’s musculature. An individual who engages in this activity is referred to as a bodybuilder. In competitive amateur and professional bodybuilding, the bodybuilders appear in lineups doing specified poses, and later performing individual posing routines, for a panel of judges who rank competitors based on criteria such as symmetry, muscularity, and conditioning. The father of modern bodybuilding,

Eugen Sandow created the “flex and pose” formulas around which modern bodybuilding competitions revolve. Sandow was the perfect gracilian, a standard of ideal body proportion close to those of ancient Greek and Roman statues. Bodybuilders are judged by how closely they matched those proportions. Bodybuilders prepare for the competition through a combination of dehydration, fat loss, oils and tanning (or tanning lotions) which make their muscular definition more distinct. Wellknown bodybuilders include Charles Atlas, Steve Reeves, Reg Park, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Lou Ferrigno. In Bahrain, Blacksmith’s Gym, owned by the legendary bodybuilder, Sami Al Hadad has built its own stable of athletes who have competed both locally and internationally. SKIN CARE

FOODS FOR PERFECT SKIN They say food is medicine, but did you know that they also have cosmetic value? Eat your way to better skin with these superfoods. ALMONDS Almonds are stuffed with Vitamin E, a potent sun blocker. Vitamin E helps to protect skin cells from UV light and other environmental factors that generate cell-damaging free radicals. Eat about 20 almonds to benefit from this vitamin. Alternatively, you can substitute 2 tbsp peanut butter or ½ cup broccoli.

LEMON Lemon aids with digestion by increasing the secretion of bile from the liver, while also acting as a strengthening agent for the liver’s enzymes. Any support to the liver, which is our primary detoxifying organ, is going to help clear up acne in the long run.

TOMATOES

PEPPERMINT

Tomatoes are rich in Vitamin C, which helps keep the skin firm and taut, by aiding collagen production. They also contain lycopene: the red pigment which not only gives them their bright red color, but also stimulates skin circulation and fight free radicals. It also helps reduce sun damage.

It’s really hard to pick fault with a steaming cup of peppermint tea, which is known for its potent healing and calming properties. Not only can it help to aid digestion, relieve stress a common acne aggravator— treat headaches and clear sinuses, but its seriously good for the skin too. Try swapping it in for your usual cup of coffee.

WATERCRESS The leafy greens are jammed full of antioxidants as well as the minerals manganese, carotene, and potassium. This makes watercress a powerful cleansing agent, nourishing the skin while helping to flush out toxins and excess fluids in the process! Jackpot!

WATER The body is made up of so much water. You need to drink as much as possible to flush out the system. The skin is an eliminating organ, so any time there is toxicity in the body, it will eliminate through the skin. If water tastes too… plain, add some lemon. Not only does it give a nice kick, it’s really great for your skin.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS FOR A HEALTHIER

MIND & BODY

1

LOSE WEIGHT But don’t expect overnight success!

A lot of New Year’s resolutions fall apart when people don’t see instant results. But losing weight is a lifestyle commitment and not a crash dieting concerto. Use a food journal to keep track of what you eat and have a support group around you to keep you from making excuses not to hit the treadmill.

2

HOLD A PLANK A very manageable fitness resolution that most people can stick to is holding a plank every morning, first thing out of bed. If you can spend one minute brushing your teeth, you can definitely find one minute to hold a plank. Planks are truly one of the best exercises ever: they work your core and your entire body. Start from 30 seconds and build up to one minute. By doing this first thing in the morning, you remind yourself to stay active all day.

4

You can curb your sugar cravings by filling up on healthy, protein-rich meals. So more protein means that you can stop reaching for those chocolates!

3

“Transformation isn’t a future event, it’s a present day activity.”

EAT MORE PROTEIN

HEALTH & WELLNESS

TRY SUGAR ALTERNATIVES OR SKIP IT ENTIRELY!

Refined sugar is a big cause of worry to the health conscious folks and with good reason! This sugar is made up mostly of empty calories without the minerals or nutrients which are present in the sugar beet or cane. Try substituting sugar with stevia (a natural plant extract), which is dried so it looks like icing sugar, and also agave syrup—an ideal replacement for honey or golden syrup. Try having your coffee or tea without sugar, its not going to kill you. And you get the full benefits of these healthful drinks without the danger of getting diabetes.

5

CUT THE STRESS

A little pressure now and again won’t kill us; in fact short bouts of stress give us an energy boost. But if stress is chronic, it can increase your risk of or worsen, insomnia, depression, obesity, heart disease, and more. Long work hours, little sleep, no exercise, poor diet, and not spending time with family and friends can contribute to stress, says Roberta Lee, MD, an integrative medicine specialist at Beth Israel Medical Center. Relaxation, sleep, socializing, and taking vacations are all things we tell ourselves we deserve but dont make time for.

QUIT SMOKING

EAT LESS… AND MORE OFTEN

6

It’s sure that you don’t want to have lung disease, and you don’t want people around you to get it either! If you quit smoking, you’re doing your friends and family a big favour plus you’ll be saving major bucks!

7

Stop eating three large meals a day and instead tuck into six smaller dishes which will increase your metabolism and promote energy levels. A filling breakfast like porridge or eggs will help keep you fuller for longer too.

In fact, the average man is about 24 pounds heavier today than men in 1960, according to a study by The State of Obesity in the United States—and the figures are rising. And though you may have seen slimmer days, it’s not all downhill from here. And there are many reasons to aim for washboard abs. Consider this: when white fat expands in your abdomen, nestling deep among your organs, it sets you up for some serious heart trouble. This type of fat, called visceral fat, churns out stress hormones like cortisol and inflammatory substances called cytokines that affect the body’s production of insulin. The result: You’re looking at increased risk of Type 2 Diabetes and heart disease. The fact of the matter is that battling the bulge takes different strategies and approaches depending on your genetics, your metabolism, your willpower, etc. But with trial and error, putting in more workout as compared to the food you put in, you can finally unsheathe those abs.

NEVER STOP MOVING There’s one thing to like about visceral fat: It yields fairly easily to aerobic exercise. Vaporizing calories via running, biking, swimming—anything that gets your heartrate up— wins over resistance training when it comes to getting rid of the stuff.

EAT MORE PROTEIN About 25-30% of the calories in each gram of protein are burned in digestion, compared to only 6-8% of the calories in carbs. Do the math: you save 41 calories every time you substitute 50 grams of protein for an equal amount of carbs.

POUND THE POLYUNSATURATES Saturated fat packs on more visceral fat than polyunsaturated ones, according to a Swedish study. When subjects ate 750 more calories daily for seven weeks, either in the 58 | PowerUp | January 2016

form of palm oil (saturated) or sunflower oil (polyunsaturated), the former gained more visceral fat while the latter gained more muscle mass and less body fat.

READ LABELS Avoid foods with “highfructose corn syrup” in the ingredients list. Since 1971, consumption of this sugar substitute—which is used to sweeten soda, commercial baked goods, and even condiments—has increased more than 350% in the United States alone, paralleling the rise in obesity.

PUCKER UP

Obese people who consumed a tablespoon or two of vinegar daily for eight weeks showed significant decreases in body fat, particularly visceral fat, according to a 2009 Japanese study. One theory is that the acetic acid in the vinegar produces proteins that burn up fat, says Pamela

www.powerup-mag.com

Peeke, professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland.

EMBRACE YARDWORK View any type of physical activity—even those you try to avoid, such as mowing the lawn—as a chance to burn fat and condition your body.

RENT MOTIVATION

DO THE YOGA Postmenopausal women who tried yoga for 16 weeks reported significant reductions in visceral fat says a study published in 2012. This is because it lowers the levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which is linked to belly fat.

Once a week, watch a movie that inspires you to exercise. Examples: Rocky (for the gym), American Flyers (for cycling), and Chariots of Fire and Without Limits (both for running).

GET EIGHT HOURS OF SLEEP Sleeping less than eight hours a night increases visceral fat levels according to a 2010 Wake Forest University Study, which is one more reason to snooze.

AND MAKE IT A ROUTINE Women who wake up and go to bed at the same time each evening have lower levels of body fat according to a recent study in Brigham Young University. Chaotic sleep habits cause your internal clock to go haywire, which in turn causes your body to secrete fat storing hormones like cortisol.

BREAK A RECORD Challenge yourself to run farther in the same amount of time—even if its just onetenth of a mile, every single workout. This ensures you’re always burning more calories from one workout to the next.

SMASH YOUR DINNER PLATES And buy smaller ones. That way, even if you fill a plate to capacity, you’re ultimately eating less than you would likely pile on your existing platters.

facebook.com/powerupmagazine

MAKE GREEN TEA YOUR BEST FRIEND Moderate exercisers who stocked up on the antioxidants found in green tea, called catechins, were more likely to lose abdominal fat while exercising than those who didn’t take them.

MYTH BUSTER MYTH: The only answer to a flat stomach is dieting

FACT: Dieting definitely

helps one to reduce weight and lose body fat, provided you are eating the right fruits and vegetables. However, it is not the only thing that you can resort to. For a properly toned body, you would need to include abdominal exercises in your daily routine as well.

TIPS FROM THE

EXPERTS

This monthly feature will answer reader’s questions from top medical and fitness experts All, your medical questions, answered. This month, we interview Dr. Yousuf Sharif of Ibn Al Nafees Hospital to get a glimpse of some common physical injuries.

COMMON INJURIES POWER UP: What are the

common physical injuries that you encounter as a doctor?

DR. YOUSUF: In terms of

ordinary physical complaints: spinal injuries are the most common, and this includes lower back pain and neck pain. In terms of sports injuries, ankle sprains are the most common.

POWER UP: What are the common causes of physical injuries? DR. YOUSUF: It’s funny that physical injuries used to be caused by general abuse of the body (overwork, lifting too heavy weights, and etc.). Now, its caused by people not moving at all, a sedentary lifestyle.

POWER UP: Tell us a

little bit more about physiotherapy, what is the common procedure when you have a patient?

DR. YOUSUF: First, we examine the patient, and then there’s an X-Ray involved, an MRI image and in some cases maybe even a special test because the injury we are looking at may not be the injury we are expecting, it may be something else completely different. POWER UP: How much

time does it take for a common injury to heal?

DR. YOUSUF: Depending on the level of the injury, it can take generally four to six sessions or even longer, maybe eight. However, I have sat through some cases which only took two sessions, and sometimes only one. So it would really depend on the type of injury, the body’s mobility, and etc. POWER UP: What is the importance of physical therapy to an injured person?

DR. YOUSUF: Physical therapy allows patients to retain their full body functions and this is really important if you want to live a long, active, and fulfilling life. NEXT ISSUE: HEART HEALTH 60 | PowerUp | January 2016

DR. YOUSUF SHARIF Resident Physiotherapist of Ibn Al Nafees Hospital

POWER UP: Do you

agree that people who experience severe back/ neck pains can help themselves through videos/ books/ exercises without the need of a physiotherapist?

DR. YOUSUF: Technology is a double-edged sword. People can try to help themselves with these exercises but without consulting a physiotherapist, it might just make their condition worse. So the mix of consultation and moderate self-help is ideal. POWER UP: What are

the current trends in physiotherapy that is being highlighted in Ibn Nafees?

DR. YOUSUF: Well, there is tri-needling which is a revisionist form of acupuncture, where you highlight (needle) certain trigger points, instead of the meridian points. This is one thing that could possibly see a trend this year because it eases physical pain. For information: Ibn Al-Nafees Hospital Tel. no. +973 1782 8282

2016 TRENDS

FITNESS WEARABLE TECH Introduced just a few years ago, wearable technology includes fitness trackers, smart watches, heart rate monitors, and GPS tracking devices. Examples include fitness and activity trackers from Misfit, Garmin, Jawbone, and Fitbit. Some analysts predict that the wearable technology market will sell more than 485 million devices by

2016. Trending products include smart glasses and smart fabrics and interactive textiles. According to a 2014 study by Forbes, 71% of 16 to 24 year olds want wearable technology. Put simply, wearables are the biggest new innovation in technology since the smartphone—and the possibilities are endless.

with blades, which exposes the produce to air and speeds up oxidation. Because of this, pressed juices have more fiber and even a little protein. Initially, cold-pressed juice was used for juice cleanses and the popularity of these, and juice bars is on the rise.

03

HIGHINTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING (HIIT)

FUNCTIONAL FITNESS

/powerupmagazine

COLD-PRESSED FRUIT JUICES

Cold pressed juicers are fast becoming popular. These machines extract juice by pressing and grinding fruits and vegetables without adding heat, hence the term “cold-pressed”. The juice retains more nutrients because fruits and vegetables aren’t shredded

02

Functional fitness is using strength training to improve balance, coordination, force, power, and endurance to enhance someone’s ability to perform activities of daily living. Typically, functional fitness is paired with fitness programs for older adults and in clinical programs to replicate activities done around the home.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

High intensity interval training typically involves short bursts of high-intensity exercise followed by a

04

short period of rest or recovery and typically takes less than 30 minutes to perform. Many clients like this

type of program because of its short time-frame. This exercise remains popular in many gyms all over the world.

MARATHONS, TRIATHLONS

There’s something incredibly special about running and finishing a marathon and triathlon, having completed one you can check a major accomplishment off your bucket list. Becoming a marathoner or a triathlete is a legitimate life goal, and for good reason: you’ll get in the best shape of your life. Most training plans include interval workouts and long runs, which improve both aerobic endurance and your speed.

02

HIGH-PROTEIN BARS, POWDERS, AND SHAKES

The best way to get your daily protein is through whole food, but this isn’t always practical or possible. Enter supplement manufacturers to help you meet your daily protein needs with the convenience of bars and powders. Protein bars and shakes provide an easy hit of protein after a workout, when your appetite doesn’t

always tolerate a full meal. Protein replacement foods help elderly adults get the amino acids they need to maintain muscle mass—especially if they have slight appetites. In a pinch, protein bars and shakes can serve as meal replacements when you’re on the go.

JUICING

BENEFITS OF JUICING

ESSENTIAL BENEFITS OF DRINKING WATER, STAYING HYDRATED

An easy way to get more Vitamins and minerals into your diet, juicing has potential benefits for you and your kids.

COMBAT FATIGUE You can’t run on all four cylinders if you are dehydrated. Water is one of the most important sources of energy for your body. It helps cells complete important enzymatic activities which contribute to good sleep, restoration of bodily systems, and the production of ample energy to get you through your day.

1

SUPPLIES NUTRIENTS TO THE BODY

The number of households that cook 3 meals a day is on the decline. Mothers have jobs and the pantry is filled with ready-made processed foods. Many people eat all their meals out. This environment makes it difficult for people to get proper nutrients. People try to compensate by taking multivitamins but if they drink juice, they will get the most nutrients which are better absorbed by the body. “Although it is better to eat than to drink fruits and vegetables, it is better to drink them than not to have them at all”; says Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center.

2

GROWTH BOOSTER

The key in healthy diet is to eat all the food groups including meat, vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, etc. Nutrients are not stored in our body for later use. Except for fat, most nutrients get used up or excreted. This is critically important to children. Their growing bodies need a complete supply of nutrients through balanced meals and fruit/ vegetable juices.

3

DETOXIFIER

Juicing is an amazing way to detoxify and cleanse your body. Your body works hard everyday, digesting and processing all the food you consume, plus all the other stresses you put on yourself that your body has to deal

64 | PowerUp | January 2016

with. Since fresh juices have already been pre-digested (the fibre has been removed), drinking fresh juice regularly can give your body the break it needs to focus on healing other parts of you that it otherwise doesn’t have the time or energy to address.

4

EAT HEALTHIER

Over time, drinking fresh juices actually re-formats your taste buds, and you start to naturally feel attracted to eating a wider variety of fruits and vegetables—even the ones you previously disliked. Try it with kids who won’t eat their veggies—you’ll be amazed.

5

IMMUNE SYSTEM CHARGER

The immune system once it has absorbed juice will be supercharged with concentrated phytochemicals. It also contains biophotonic light energy, which can help revitalize your body.

5

ENERGIZER

When your body has an abundance of the nutrients it needs, and your pH is optimally balanced, you feel energized. Since it can be utilized by your body immediately, those who juice report feeling the “kick” of energy almost instantly.

REDUCE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE When the body is fully hydrated, the blood is approximately 92% water. This helps to keep the blood moving freely through the veins and arteries, helping to prevent high blood pressure along with other cardiovascular ailments. CLEANSES TOXINS FROM YOUR BODY Your kidneys need water to filter waste from the blood and excrete it in urine. Keeping hydrated may also help prevent urinary tract infections and kidney stones. If you are severely dehydrated, your kidneys may stop working, causing toxins to build up in your body.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Heartburn Remedies Heartburn is triggered when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus, and it can make you feel as though someone has lit a small bonfire in your chest. Try these natural home remedies and lifestyle changes to get relief.

1

WATCH WHAT YOU EAT

Avoid specific foods that trigger your heartburn, but also watch out for alcohol, peppermint, caffeine, sodas, chocolate, citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes, onions, and high-fat foods. Eat more fiber to keep your digestive tract moving and healthy. Try eating five or six small meals a day rather than three big ones. Eating too much at once is a big heartburn trigger.

2

WATCH WHEN YOU EAT

Push away the plate at least two or three hours before bedtime so your stomach has a chance to empty before you lie down.

3

WATCH HOW YOU EAT

Eat slowly, taking smaller bites. Relax. Feeling stressed when eating in a rush can cause the stomach to produce more acids.

4

STAY UPRIGHT AFTER EATING

This reduces the risk of acid creeping up your esophagus. You’ll also want to avoid bending over or straining to lift heavy objects.

5

USE ALOE JUICE

Aloe, a plant usually used to soothe burns, can do the same thing for stomachs. Aloe vera juice reduces inflammation so “it quiets down any inflammation that is in the esophagus as well as the stomach”.

6

LOSE WEIGHT

Heartburn often just gets worse as you gain weight. Excess abdominal fat can press against the stomach, forcing acids up into the esophagus but losing as little as two and a half pounds can help reduce heartburn symptoms. Follow a diet and exercise program to shed extra pounds.

HEALTH & WELLNESS 66 | PowerUp | January 2016

7

BAKING SODA

Old wives’ tales will tell you the best way to beat heartburn is with a little sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). Since baking soda is a base, it helps neutralize stomach acid. Dr. Jacqueline Wolf, associate professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School recommends mixing between ½ and 1 teaspoon of baking soda with a glass of water.

8

LOOSEN YOUR BELT

You could be having an episode of heartburn because tight clothing is binding your stomach. Ditch the skin-tight jeans. Tight clothes put added pressure on the abdomen.

10

CHEW GUM

Besides eliminating garlic breath, chewing gum after a meal might have its advantages. It may sound strange, but gum stimulates the production of saliva, which is an acid buffer. Plus, chewing gum makes you swallow more often, which pushes those nasty acids back out of your esophagus.

11

TOSS THE CIGARETTES

12

GET MORE ACID

13

EAT A BANANA OR AN APPLE

Smoking can reduce the effectiveness of the muscle that keeps acids in the stomach.

When you have acid burning your esophagus, it seems counterintuitive to ingest even more acid. In many cases though, acid reflux is caused by not having enough acid in your stomach. If you don’t produce enough acid, your lower esophagus is going to think its no big deal to loosen up for a little bit. Try drinking some pure, raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar.

9

STRAIGHTEN UP

Your posture might be contributing to heartburn, so if you’re sitting or lying down, try standing up. If you’re already standing, try standing up straighter. When you’re slumped down, your internal organs are compressed. A simple and effective solution may be to lengthen and widen your torso and spine, as your head gently moves towards the ceiling.

/powerupmagazine

Apples and Bananas contain natural antacids that act as a buffer against acid reflux. For this, and so many other health reasons, it’s always the perfect time to quit.

HOW EXERCISE HELPS THE BRAIN We already know exercise has a ton of feel good properties, but how does it benefit that most important body part the brain? The benefits of physical exercise, especially aerobic exercise, has positive effects on brain function on multiple fronts. It has been shown that even brief exercising for 20 minutes facilitates information processing and memory functions. John J. Ratey, M.D., an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School says “Exercise is like taking Prozac or Ritalin at just the right moment. It really is for the brain and not just the body. It affects mood, vitality, alertness, and feelings of wellbeing”. These are just some of the awesome brain benefits of exercising.

THE BRAIN BENEFITS OF EXERCISE

PROMOTES THE GROWTH OF BRAIN CELLS Exercise increases heart rate, which pumps more oxygen into the brain. It also aids the bodily release of a plethora of hormones, all of which participate in aiding and providing a nourishing environment for the growth of brain cells. Aerobic exercise not only improves brain function, it also acts as a “first-aid kit” to damaged brain cells. Running increases the brain’s ability to grow new cells, and the more miles that you run, the more new brain cells you can grow. Awesome!

HELPS MEMORY AND THINKING A study from Stockholm showed that the antidepressant effect of running was also associated with more cell growth in the hippocampus, an area of the brain responsible for learning and memory. Even moderate physical exercise such as walking, can boost memory functions, learning, and the ability for abstract reasoning. Exercising in the morning before going to work not only spikes brain activity and prepares you for mental stresses for the day, it also increases retention of new information, and better reaction to complex situations. Hitting a wall or mentally exhausted? Try rebooting with a few jumping jacks to improve your mindset.

PREVENTS DEPRESSION Depression slows the brain’s ability to process information, making it more difficult for us to concentrate and reach decisions. Exercise increases the production of serotonin, a critical neurotransmitter found in the brain that is associated with good health and mental well-being. Aerobic exercise and strength training helps to improve your mood. The anti-depressant like effects associated with “runner’s high” found in humans is associated with a drop in stress hormones. And it boosts a level of the feel-good chemicals called endorphins.

REDUCES THE EFFECTS OF STRESS Studies at the University of Boulder even showed that even forced exercise can help protect you from anxiety and stress! Slow, scattered thinking and forgetfulness are caused by stress more often than we realize. Exercise lowers cortisol levels, helping you to think straight again.

Boosts decisionmaking skills

Lengthens attention span

Improves multi-tasking and planning

MAKEUP

CLARINS FIX MAKEUP Mist this over finished makeup to help set it so it stays on longer; it has a refreshing grapefruit scent. It’s like having your makeup airbrushed, and it will last all day even under the hot sun.

CHANEL STYLO YEUX WATERPROOF EYELINER It’s rich, creamy and you can smudge it however you want and yet after it sets it won’t move. You can create easy, smoky eyes with this pencil by just running it along the upper and lower lash lines then smudging with Q-tips, no eyeshadow needed.

MAYBELLINE BABY LIPS Tinted lip balm is the perfect way to add a little light weight color to your lips. You’ll forget you even have it on. Having that extra boost of color will make your lips stand out and brighten up the rest of your face with one effortless swipe.

MAKEUP FOR KICK-ASS GIRLS

ATHLETE MAKEUP Can your makeup survive your athletic prowess? Whether you hit the gym, or go running in a marathon, or like to smash your opponents through muay-thai, these makeup picks will stand the test. L’OREAL VOLUMINOUS WATERPROOF MASCARA

ESTEE LAUDER DOUBLE WEAR MINERAL RICH LOOSE POWDER

You’ve got your skin for your whole life, so don’t be afraid to spend a little money to keep it nice. This sunscreen cream will protect your skin from those UV rays while keeping it soft and moisturized.

When you buff this on using a powder blush, the trick is to swirl the blush in circular motions as you’re going all-over your face—it’ll look so natural and sheer. You can blot your sweat away but the powder will still stay put.

FASHION & STYLE

Running gear doesn’t need to be expensive and or branded, all you really need to invest in is a good pair of shoes. After which you can start adding one by one stuff that you really need.

RUNNING

WATER BOTTLES If you’re going to run more than four or five miles, you definitely need a water bottle to hydrate yourself. To start, feel free to carry a bottle of water you can get at any grocery store. As you run more and farther, you can invest in a better bottle.

FASHION & STYLE

SMART PHONE A running watch can help you know your pace, encourage you to run faster, or run negative splits (running the second half of a run faster than the first half). Watches can range from a simple Timex 1440, costing around $20, to a several hundred dollar Garmin with GPS and automatic splits. If you truly want to get faster then you will need a watch so you can measure your pace and

SPORTS WATCH At first, all you need to know is how long you’ve been running. Any watch will do. As you progress, you might invest in a heart-rate monitor or a GPS watch, which can tell you how fast and how far you’re going as well as your pace and heart rate.

HAT

A GOOD PAIR OF SHOES Tennis shoes won’t do if you want to be really dedicated to this sport, and neither will those beat-up running shoes you’ve grown out of. You need fresh, wellcushioned shoes that fit well and match your foot type and gait. Running shoes after all, are designed for running, and as a beginning runner, your legs and feet need all the protection they can get.

GEAR

BEST BIKES FOR WOMEN A lot of women are breaking grounds in sports, so why not have gear built specifically for women? Here are top bike picks.

CANNONDALE SYNAPSE DISC 105 5 WOMEN’S 2015 ROAD BIKE Another brilliant option at the top end of the bracket, the Cannondale Synapse Women’s Road Bike has an aluminium frame, carbon forks, Shimano 105 5800 groupset and disc brakes. This is one well-kitted out roadbike. It comes with a smaller seatpost that will be favorable to smaller women, and it basically looks like the bike Batwoman would buy.

GIANT AVAIL 1 WOMEN’S 2015 ROAD BIKE The Giant Avail 1 is built for women from the ground-up, with the aluminium frame having women-specific geometry. It also features an overdrive steerer tube and an oversized bottom bracket for maximum efficiency.

SCOTT CONTESSA SPEEDSTER 15 WOMEN’S 2015 ROAD BIKE The Scott Contessa Road Bike has an alloy frame with double butted tubing and a carbon alloy fork to ensure things stay smooth no matter what the road surface is.

MASSAGE BALL Relieve your workout aches and pains. Foam-rolling is used by athletes and physios to relax muscles and aid in recovery postworkout.

FITNESS ESSENTIALS Staying in shape doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With these fitness essentials you can easily create an effective fitness regime right in your home or office.

MEASURING TAPE Waist circumference is one of the best ways to evaluate whether or not you have a weight problem as it will also give you an indication of your intra-abdominal fat mass— something that BMI or weight on a scale cannot do.

CHAIR A chair is a very useful exercise tool. Use it for pushups, triceps dips, squats, lat pulls, or abdominal exercises.

FREE WEIGHTS Start with a few free weights in pounds that feel manageable to use. Before you know it, you’ll be buying heavier dumbbells!

LUMIE BODYCLOCK STARTER 30 Health and fitness starts with a decent night’s sleep. If you struggle to switch on and off at the right time, try this alarmclock which stimulates a 30-minute sunrise that gradually brightens the room before it goes off.

GYM TOWEL an inexpensive alternative to resistance bands or a medicine ball. No matter where you are, if you have a towel, you have an effective workout tool that can be used for exercises like sliding push-ups, leg curls, isometric shoulder press, and a wide variety of stretching exercises.

FITNESS TIPS TRY THE HALF AND HALF TECHNIQUE

1

Fill up half your plate with protein and half with veggies or a mixture of veggies and fresh fruit so that its harder to overdo it on more caloric dishes like cheesy potatoes or baby back ribs.

2

DON’T FORGET THE CAFFEINE Coffee is great for athletic performances because it makes you sharper and may even give you extended energy. Now that’s a good buzz!

SWEATSHIRT Go for a 100% cotton sweatshirt which is so soft, it will feel like cashmere. If you’re after relaxed workout gear that you can wear offduty, the sweatshirt is it. It’s comfy and it doesn’t stink.

JUMPING ROPE RUN 10K Just the app for newcomers to running, and what better way to start than the new year. Sign up for a 10k on April, then follow the workouts on this app to track your progress.

In the book “The Secret Garden”, the sickly child, Mary was able to get stronger through jumping rope. Jumping rope is a good, old fashioned way to warm up and get your juices flowing. Warming up for 10 minutes increases your core body temperature and gets synovial fluid moving and oils your joints, which will help prevent injury.

IF YOU 2 WANT TO EAT MORE, YOU’LL HAVE TO DO MORE It takes 3,500 calories to gain a pound of fat. Do the math. If you want to eat more, you’ll have to exercise more to weight less. If you don’t want to exercise you’ll just have to diet, there’s no other way around it.

HEALTH & FITNESS APPS We all need encouragement to help us reach our health and fitness goals, but with the modern, busy, lifestyle who has time to coach us? These apps are the answer.

HUMAN

ZOCDOC ZocDoc helps you schedule an appointment with a local doctor just by entering your zip code and insurance. The app shows you local doctors who accept your insurance and available appointment slots, and you book your time with just one more click. You can read patient reviews to help you choose the right doctor. Plus, there’s also ZocDoc Well Guide for learning about and scheduling, and best of all, it’s free!

For those seeking a more casual approach to exercise, Human might just be the answer. This app simply encourages you to reach your “Daily 30”—30 minutes of physical activity—whatever that may be for you. Whether its running, dancing, or doing jumping jacks, all that matters is you are being active for 30 consecutive minutes at a time. Human will track your movements and let you know if you have achieved your goal for the day. Only activities of a minute or more will count towards your daily goals. A short walk during lunch, your active daily commute, or a run will be detected automatically and will show on your timeline.

ZOMBIES RUN! This app turns a boring run into an exciting chase with zombies. Zombies Run! puts together a whole narrative while you’re running, simultaneously tracking your stats and ensuring a good workout. You run in the real world and become a hero in another. While you’re walking or jogging, you will hear your mission through your headphones. If you’re chased by zombies, you’ll have to speed up.

WORKOUT HERO Select your workout of the day from more than 700 options, log it, and follow your progress. Tools include stopwatches, alarms, calendars, and heart rate monitors. This easy to use, state-of-the-art fitness app gives you the ability to pull workouts directly from your favorite website and add your gym’s RSS feed as well as Log Your Max Weight achievements. You can also create your own custom WOD’s (Workout of the Day) and save them for the future.
