in Bahrain and GCC Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the all-round growth and development of the youth of a nation. In Bahrain, under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad, we are dedicated to provide all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is concerned. I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to teamwork, and problem-solving and organisational abilities. In today’s most challenging environment, such skills can only help individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early school stages. Possibilities for implementing such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome of an effective physical education. In fact, sports have been proven to actually raise IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports help children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and how to respond positively to setbacks and failures. Most importantly, sports help a child to prepare to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion. Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and show jumping, which have an immense traditional value, although we must not forget there are also other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us. For the above reasons, I warmly welcome the arrival of PowerUp, the first sports dedicated magazine to be based in Bahrain. It will be a fantastic tool for the people of Bahrain to view sports clubs and fixtures that are available on our island. It will expose them to new sports from around the world and introduce them to exciting existing sports they may wish to try.

SWIM, BIKE, RUN

Believe it or not, Triathlon is the fastest growing sport in the world right now. It might have started out as an unbelievable test of human and mental physical ability, and of course there are many races that are like that today, but there is a reason triathlon is pacing every other sport, and you’ll know why.

ONE SPORT IS NOT ENOUGH Triathlon as a sport is still relatively new, having its roots in France in the 1920s. Competitors participated in a race called “Les trois sports” – translated literally to “Three Sports” which is swimming, cycling and running. A Triathlon is a long-distance race consisting of a 3.86 km swim, a 180.25 km bicycle ride and a marathon 42.2 km run, raced in that order and without a break. It is widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world. Most events have a strict time limit of 17 hours to complete the race. The race typically starts at 7:00 a.m.; the mandatory swim cut off for the 3.9 km swim is 9:20 a.m. (2 hours 20 minutes), the mandatory bike cut off time is 5:30 p.m. (8 hours 10 minutes), and the mandatory marathon cut off is midnight (6 hours 30 minutes).

IRONMAN Ironman started as a challenge among the US Navy Seals to find out which sport (running or swimming) is the most physically demanding. It is an extreme sport for super fit athletes and is considered as one of the most difficult one-day sport events in the world. Most Ironman events have a strict time limit of 17 hours to complete the race of a 2.4-mile (3.9 km) swim, a 112mile (180 km) bike ride and a 26.2-mile (42.1 km) run. The winner of this triathlon who completes the course within the set timings is called an “Ironman”. Several races around the world are being organized by the World Triathlon Corporation throughout the year.

CHALLENGE (HALF IRONMAN) Challenge is the fastest growing global long distance triathlon series, now with 44 full and half distance triathlons in 21 countries, of which Bahrain and Dubai are the latest. Featuring spectacular courses in iconic destinations, Challenge events focus on delivering the race of a lifetime to athletes of all ages and abilities, and creating a memorable spectator experience.

THE RACE AND HOW IT WORKS Each triathlon has a special place called a transition area (and there is almost always only one such zone) where participants change gear and clothing and do anything else they might need to do before moving on to the next stage.

Swimming The swim start is the most chaotic and unpredictable aspect of the whole race. After the starter pistol fires, everyone piles into the water swimming simultaneously, competing for position.

T1 Swim to Bike Once the triathlete is out of the water, it’s time for the first transition, also known as T1 which occurs between the swim and the cycle. The transition area is located between the end of the swim area and the start of the bike ride. Triathletes then remove their wetsuits and change to their bikes gears to get ready for the cycling stage.

Cycling Triathletes ride their bike as fast and efficiently as they can while still conserving something for the run, and pedal until they reach the transition area for T2 Bike-Run

T2 Bike to Run Once they reach the transition to for bike-run, Triathletes parks their bike and head to the running course.

THE PAIN IS TEMPORARY, THE MEMORIES WILL LAST THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. - John Collins The Father of Ironman

Running

Finish Line

Running is the final leg of a triathlon. In the standard format, the running section is 10 kilometers long. Running involves less specialized equipment or controversial clothing than cycling and swimming. Triathletes can walk during the running portion of a triathlon, but “crawling” is not allowed.

According to the ITU, a runner is said to have “finished” the race when “any part of the torso reaches the perpendicular line extending from the leading edge of the finish line”. CELEBRATE! If you’ve made it this far you’ve completed a triathlon!

T

he tradition of falconry in the Gulf goes back to ancient times, with deep roots in the local identity. Here in Bahrain, many falconry enthusiasts head to desert locations during the falcon-hunting

season, which is from October to March, to witness the birds’ hunt for prey, a chase that can last for days. Al Areen Falcon Hospital, a full-blown clinic specialising in treating falcons, was founded in 2008 to provide services to falcon owners in Bahrain and the region. It consists of several main sections, including a reception area that houses a large screen to enable the falcon owners to observe their pets under examination or during surgery. Additionally, there are documentary and other informative programmes that aim to educate falcon owners on all topics related to these magnificent birds. The hospital also contains a special five-room suite dedicated to accommodating sick falcons that need to remain in the hospital for

W

e have directed our attention and care towards the sport of the Mixed Martial Arts for the great and powerful meanings it has, and most importantly to find a generation of professional athletes, who have the required skills and strength to practice this type of sport within the correct and legal

frameworks. Our interest in the sport of the Mixed Martial Arts has originated from our realization to the fact that most of the youth in our community, from different ages, have the desire to practice this sport, and that has put us before a big responsibility, that is, to respond to the youth’s desires and interests, and to exploit the youths potentials in a useful sport instead of releasing this energy in so many negative forms such as violence, which is totally rejected by our community. Moreover, the religion of Islam encourages us to practice such sports for the benefits and skills that the youth acquire through these spots. Islam urged us to be strong in our bodies, in our minds and in our souls, and to keep away from all types of violence, and all forms of weakness, as our prophet (peace be upon him) said : “A strong Muslim is better than a weak Muslim, although he is good in all.” Our interest might emerge from our major objective, that is, we want to draw the Bahraini youth’s attention to realize the meaning of the famous saying “the healthy mind is in the healthy body”, and this sport grants the youth to practice one of the most important sports that provide the individual with the mental as well as the physical strength, and this can be realized only by practicing the intensive and systematic exercises, and this can be obtained from this kind of sport. As you know, we look forward to forming a Bahraini Mixed Martial Arts team to participate in various international tournaments and sports events, which will surely have a positive impact on strengthening the position of the Kingdom of Bahrain in this global sport, and this can be achieved only through holding the local tournaments for the Mixed Martial Arts, which we seek to find the distinct elements to approve this sport within the Bahraini team in this sport. I take this opportunity to extend my appreciation to the organizing committee, and to the working committees in the field for this great organization of this event, and wish all participants success in this event, which will witness the birth of new sport talents in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts.

n a new milestone for the Bahraini sports, a world-renowned Australian swimmer Eric Watson completed the second edition of the Khalid bin Hamad Swim Challenge, stretching 34.6 kilometres from the Sunset Resort in Saudi Arabia to the Sofitel Resort in Bahrain, in 08:31:46. The timing means that he completed every 100 metres in 1 minute and 24 seconds, which is a worldwide record in such competitions.

Is it ever too late to become a professional athlete? It would get increasingly harder as you get older. You can become a professional in your early thirties depending on previous sporting career and background. Otherwise, starting young is always best.

Basically, starting out on a standard road bike is enough to start building your foundation, to get the base and learn more about the sport.

What is the toughest leg to Eric? Is it swimming? The toughest leg for me, as far as it goes, would be the bike, as I don’t have the efficiency that I need on it yet. As far as hurting goes, it doesn’t hurt me as much. The right word is that I don’t have the efficiency that other guys have on the bike when it comes to the power and getting the body to perform at the highest level.

When I got out of the water, I felt a bit lost, like I was out of my environment; you should have seen how many mermaids I saw. A lot of people want to start cycling, but they can’t afford a superbike. Do you think the bike makes a major difference? It’s not important when you’re starting out, because you don’t have the engine that’s efficient enough to push the technology that’s being put into the bike.

How was the swim? Was it a lot harder than you thought it was going to be? It’s the most challenging thing I’ve ever done in my sporting career to date, because of the wind and the currents out there in that channel; it was definitely a world-class challenge.

What did you feel like when you got out of the water? I felt like I hit gravity again, and to finish alongside His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa was a great pleasure. I was also very proud having participated in a true humanitarian cause, which leaves me in great anticipation to future events organised by the Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Foundation.

A CHAMPION’S GUIDE TO SUCCESS by Eric Watson

DAILY TRAINING

I train from two to eight hou rs per day depending on the program and what I’m aiming for out of that day. I norm ally train six days a week and have a rest day on Saturdays or Sundays.

RESISTANCE TRAINING

I do resistance training, it is basically intervals or treadmill sessions, swimming with pedals or parachutes that hold the body back but when you rem ove certain objects that are holding you back your body can excel easier.

DAILY DIET

Since I burn a lot of calories, I have a high carbohydrate diet, I eat a lot protein for muscle development and grow th. When my body is lean, its burning thro ugh the simple sugars, honey gives me instant energy to keep going throughout the day.

CHEAT MEALS

I don’t have cheat meals, as I’m not on any particular diet. I burn roughly arou nd 5,000 calories per day hence my outp ut is a lot more than my input and whateve r goes into my body is going to get burnt.

PRE-SWIM PREPARATIONS

I’m currently carb loading to get all the fat that I need to get through the swim and cover the distance. I’m also eatin g whatever I want just for that back end energy reserved off my body.

PRE-SWIM MEAL

My pre-swim breakfast is usually something solid, low in fibre but high in carb ohydrates, the typical choices are rice with honey, white bread on toast with butter and sometimes a couple of mars bars .

SPECIAL RITUALS

Not really, I don’t believe in anything consistent, every race is different and I take it as it comes.

RACE RECOVERY

Recovery post-swim is extremely important, I usually go for a massage to get some rest, let my body recuperate and get ready for Challenge Twain Half

Bahrain Sharks Every edition, we introduce you to a local sports club that has grabbed our attention. Meet the Bahrain Sharks Ice Hockey Club. As bizarre as it sounds, it exists.

INTRODUCTION TO CLUB

JOINING THE TEAM

After the old team was dissolved due to the expats moving back home, the team was founded by Tamer Fakhroo in 2008 with assistance from the godfather of ice hockey in Bahrain Mr Andre Cote. The club is now lead by team captain Tamer Fakhroo.

It will be difficult to join the team if you are a beginner with no skating skills. Sharks usually target experienced players and not beginners. If you are looking to get into the sport and gain experience, the Bahrain ice hockey club is a great starting point.

TEAM MEMBERS

SUPPORT

The team consists of Bahraini players and expats currently living in Bahrain. Most of the team players are from the United States, Canada, Russia, and Europe.

One-on-one with British boxing champion on family and fitness

Y

ou’ve been boxing since you were eight. How did you get started so young?

As a boy, I was very hyperactive and mischievous in school. Consequently, my father decided to put my energy into something else – he signed me up at the gym, and I was in the boxing ring in no time. Usually, people associate boxing with violence and misbehavior, but in reality, it is the complete opposite. My performance at school had improved, so had my behaviour at home. Boxing taught me discipline and shaped me into what I am today.

What did your family think when you first started boxing? At the very beginning, my parents and grandmother

hated it, as they didn’t want me to get hurt. However, now that I’m really good at it, they’ve got used to it. My mother keeps asking me when I’m planning to retire; I’m not going to be in for too long to avoid getting hurt. I am planning to walk out just like I walked in, strong.

What has been your greatest achievement in boxing to date, in your opinion? Going to the Olympic games at 17 and becoming the youngest boxer in Britain to win a medal in the Olympics. That is what kick-started my whole career, and I was happy that I proved a lot of people wrong. The second was winning the global medal at the World Junior Championships. When you’re a professional boxer, it’s a dream to become a world champion, and I had the chance to do it.

Have there been any disappointing moments? In any sport you are bound to get disappointed every now and then, but that’s not what matters. What matters is how you come back from it. The fights I’ve lost have only made me stronger and more focused. Everytime I lost a fight, I used to go back to the drawing board, point out my mistakes, and fix them.

a way, it gives me a lot of strength knowing that they have my back. It positively makes me a better fighter knowing that everything I do, I do for my family.

You recently tweeted that you would love to fight Adrien Broner. Why him? Adrien Broner is a fighter that people oversee, because he talks a lot. He is a great fighter and if the opportunity prevails, I would love to win over him.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Manny Pacquiao – who do you think will win? I think it’s a great fight, because its been talked about for so long. Although it won’t be as good as it would have been five years ago when they were both at their peak, but it’s going to be a great fight that everybody is anticipating to see. I think Mayweather is going to win, as he’s smarter and is going to be more careful, but again, only time will tell.

How are you preparing for the MGM Grand Arena Championship? I’m really looking forward to being in Vegas at the MGM Grand Arena Championship. I love fighting in America, as it’s incredible to see my photo on the billboards. When I was younger, I used to visit the States and glare at photos of Mike Tyson on the billboard and now, it’s a dream come true having my photo up there.

Now what you’re a father, how has your life changed for the better? Life has definitely changed now that I have a little girl; it’s quite tough when I’m away from my family on training camp. In

Who do you think is the greatest boxer of all-time? Muhammad Ali; he has to be. Not only was he a champion inside the boxing ring, but also outside of it. I’ve always looked up to all the charity work that he did, and he has aspired me to do the same – hence I launched the Amir Khan foundation, which does charity work in third world countries. He is also the main reason why boxing is considered a serious sport.

I know our readers would love to get some nutrition and exercise tips from you. Care to share any? An exercise that looks simple, but is rather hard and extremely beneficial as

I love planking, because it works almost every main muscle in your body, and you can feel it working. I highly recommend running; a lot of people look in good shape, but they can’t run, as they don’t have fitness. When it comes to being fit, the fittest you’re going to get is when you get into the boxing ring – that’s my secret. As we are speaking, I am watching my cook prepare my meals for the day. I think meal prepping is essential to keeping healthy eating habits a priority. I start off my morning with vegetable juice, and I always make sure I balance my protein and carbs. I drink protein shakes between training sessions, as it helps heal the muscle, in addition to sipping on water throughout the day along with my multi-vitamins. Lastly, I cut back on carbs as it gets closer to the night and focus on increasing my protein intake

an you begin by telling us when and how you first got interested in yoga and how you got into teaching?

I had my first yoga class after giving birth in 2007. From the very beginning, it was obvious how yoga transformed my mind, emotions, and body. I had a regular practice, which was my sanctuary during the hectic days;

I was fascinated by the way yoga got me to look at my mind and body in broader and more creative ways. Yoga stretched my body and mind beyond my comfort zone and created more space within. The next logical step was for me to do what I loved most for a living. I got certified as a yoga teacher in 2011 and then as an experienced yoga teacher by 2013.

What type of yoga do you teach? What do you love most about teaching it? I teach Hatha yoga to beginners and Vinyāsa to intermediate students.

In your opinion, what are the greatest health benefits of doing yoga? Joy; doctors agree that happier people are less likely to get sick. Being happy prompts changes in our body that helps strengthen our immune system and decrease pain, chronic disease, and provide stress relief. Yoga works directly on turning our awareness into our true nature – that of bliss. That’s how yoga helps us all get its many benefits.

What tips can you offer for avoiding injuries in yoga and getting the most health benefits out of it?

is more It . e c ti c ra p l a u it ir p s Yoga is a very to be able s u in h it w e c a e p g in d about fin e body th in , d in m e th in in a p to look at the and still be peaceful. When I teach yoga, I feel most connected to people, to love, and to God. Through my teachings, I feel deep love for my students and myself. Most importantly, I feel love for this precious practice that brings freedom from suffering and pain. I enjoy watching how quickly and beautifully people grow and transform with this practice.

Do you feel yoga is more mental or physical? In yoga, our mental, physical, and emotional states are not separate, but are all part of one seamless system. Issue is in tissue and so, what sometimes manifests as physical pain may be emotional in origin and vice versa, physical pain can cause emotional trauma. To me, yoga is a very spiritual practice. It is more about finding peace within us to be able to look at the pain in the mind, in the body and still be peaceful.

Practice with a good teacher; following videos and books only works with those of us that already know how the exercise works. You might look at a pose and think you know how to get into it, but a teacher will guide you through not only injury prevention, but also on how to achieve the health benefits each pose is designed to provide.

What advice do you have for people who have never tried yoga? The same advice I gave all my friends after my very first class: try it or you’ll be missing out on a lot. Try with more than one teacher and more than one style of yoga till you find a class that works best for you. Don’t limit yourself; many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you, don’t allow your mind to limit you on how flexible, strong, young, or heavy you think you are. If you believe you can achieve it, then go for it. Once you begin to see the potential of how well your body, mind, and heart can feel, you will never look back. It’ll be like taking a shower on the inside Photography: Bader AlWazeer

Four Workouts Just In Time For Summer SWISS BALL CRUNCHES

Main Muscle Target: Abdominal

1. Lie on an exercise ball with your lower back curvature

pressed against the spherical surface of the ball. Your feet should be bent at the knee and pressed firmly against the floor. The upper torso should be hanging off the top of the ball. The hands should be behind the back of the head.

2. Lower your torso into a stretch position keeping the

neck stationary at all times. This will be your starting position.

3. With the hips stationary, flex the waist by contracting the

abdominals and curl the shoulders and trunk upward until you feel a nice contraction on your abdominals. The lower back should always stay in contact with the ball. Exhale as you perform this movement and hold the contraction for a second.

4. As you inhale, go back to the starting position. 5. Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.

2. Place your toes on top of an exercise ball. This will allow your body to be elevated.

3. Lower yourself until your chest almost touches the floor as you inhale.

4. Using your pectoral muscles, press your

upper body back up to the starting position and squeeze your chest. Breathe out as you perform this step.

5. After a second pause at the

contracted position, repeat the movement for the prescribed amount of repetitions.

ELBOW PLANK USING BOSU Main Muscle Target: Abdominal

Lying down on your belly, place a your feet on the BOSU and lift onto your forearms and rest your elbows shoulder-width on the mat under you. Hold it!

KETTLEBELL SQUATS & KETTLEBELL SWINGS

The kettlebell squat strengthens the lower body with a focus on the quads, hamstrings and glutes. This exercise also improves posture and mobility.

1. Grab the handle of the kettlebell with

both hands in an overhand grip and hold it in front of your chest. Stand tall with the feet about shoulder-width apart and toes pointed outward.

2. Descend down into a squat position until

the crease of your hip drops below the knee and thighs are parallel with the floor. Keep the kettlebell stable and in front of your chest throughout the movement. Explosively drive hips and knees upward to return to the starting position.

The kettlebell swing increases muscular endurance. Muscular endurance is your ability to generate sub maximal muscular contractions for extended periods of time. Moderate to high reps using a light kettlebell, combined with short rests, will help improve your muscular endurance. Your glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps, lower back, Workouts brought to you by: Chris Rawlinson Anke Visagie

shoulders, arms and core muscles are all worked effectively during kettlebell swings.

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold the kettlebell handle in both hands. Keep your weight spread evenly through your heels and forefoot. Bend your knees, descend into a quarter squat and push your hips back. Lean forward and lower the weight between your knees. Keeping your arms straight, your shoulders back and without rounding your back, thrust your hips forward and swing the kettlebell up to your preferred height. Allow gravity to pull the kettlebell back down as you push your butt back, bend your knees, and get ready for another swing.

Bike Tips 37

Given the hot and humid conditions in the Middle East, taking care of your bike is key to ensuring that your bike continues performing well for you. Bikes are no different from automobiles; if they’re not well taken care off, eventually they’ll break. It only takes a few minutes every now and then, but home maintenance can go a really long way. Here are a few tips by Corne Van Aswegen, Bike Technician at TriLife

1

“Take care of your bike, and it’ll take care of you.” If possible, try to store your bike indoors, or even better, in an air-conditioned room as the humidity in the air contains a lot of salt as we are in close proximity to the salty gulf seawater. This causes your bike to rust a lot quicker than in other regions.

2 3 Due to the really hot weather conditions, cyclist tend to sweat a lot even if they’re training indoors. Sweat contains salt and body acid, which causes the components on your bike to start rusting. Always make sure that you wipe down or rinse your bike after your ride to ensure it doesn’t rust.

When giving your bike a rinse after your ride, it is important to do your final rinse using fresh water as garden water contains traces of salt, which reduces the life expectancy of the components on the bike. Also try bouncing your bike to remove excess water or take it for a very short ride around the block before you store it.

4 5 Service intervals should be done more regularly. It is recommended that you get a minor service done atleast once every three months. If you do encounter severe weather conditions while out on a ride make sure you get your bike cleaned up before your next ride. For instance, if its windy, the sand blown onto your chain and gears creates a grinding paste, which when mixed with oil can shorten the life of your drive train.

Last but not least, summer if just around the corner and the temperature keeps going higher. Make sure you are well hydrated before your ride. Most bikes carry two bottles on the frame but there are optional solutions to take extra water along on your ride such as rear saddle mount bottle cages, aero drink bottles for your aero bars and hydration packs. You’d rather take extra water with you, then get stranded with not enough!

Of Incredibly Successful People Incredibly successful people share a number of perspectives and beliefs. Here are some of those beliefs. 1. I CAN CHOOSE MYSELF

– You can do almost anything you want — and you don’t have to wait for someone else to discover your talents, because within the past decade, access is nearly unlimited; you can connect with almost anyone through social media. You can publish your own work, distribute your own music, create your own products, attract your own funding. The only thing holding you back is you — and your willingness to try.

2. SUCCESS IS INEVITABLE ONLY IN HINDSIGHT -It’s easy

to look back on an entrepreneurial path to greatness and assume that every vision was clear, every plan was perfect, and tremendous success was a foregone conclusion. It wasn’t. Only in hindsight does it appear that way. Pick a goal and measure yourself against that goal — that is the only comparison that matters.

3. SUCCESS IS OFTEN THE RESULT OF PERSEVERANCE

- When others give up, the last person left is often the person who wins. Other people may be smarter, better connected, more talented, or better

SPORTS & FITNESS

MOTIVATION

funded. But they can’t win if they aren’t around at the end. Sometimes it makes sense to give up on ideas, projects, and even businesses — but it never makes sense to give up on yourself.

4. DON’T BUILD NETWORKS, FORGE LASTING CONNECTIONS

- You don’t need numbers. You need real connections: people you can help, people you can trust, people who care. Reach out to the people whom you want to be part of your life, even if just your professional life, for a long time. And when you do, forget about receiving and focus on providing; that’s the only way to establish a real connection and relationship. Make lasting connections and you create an extended professional family. You’ll be there when they need you... and they will be there when you need them.

5. STRATEGY IS IMPORTANT, BUT EXECUTION IS EVERYTHING - Incredibly successful people focus on executing incredibly well. Binders are filled with strategies that were never implemented. Develop

an idea. Create a strategy. Then execute, adapt, execute some more, and build a solid operation based on what works.

6. I AM NOT SELF-SERVING. I AM A SERVANT - No one

accomplishes anything worthwhile on his own. Great bosses focus on providing the tools and training to help their employees better do their jobs — and achieve their own goals. Great businesses go out of their way to help and serve their customers. And as a result, they reap the rewards.

7. WORK COMES FIRST. PAYOFF COMES LATER -

Successful people earn promotions by first working harder. Successful businesses earn higher revenue by first delivering greater value.

Triathlete, Challenge Bahrain Winner In Bahraini Women’s Category

ow long have you been actively involved in sports and what drew you to it in the first place? As a child, I was always very active and I loved sports, especially tennis – from the age of twelve, I began to compete as part of the national team of Bahrain.

MAY AL HAJI SPORTS & FITNESS

Can you tell us about the competitions you’re most proud to have been part of? Out of the many great tennis tournaments, I would choose the 2001 Arab Tennis Championship in Lebanon, because it was my first international competition. As for running, my favourite is Dubai International Marathon 2014, as I completed it just six months after having my second baby. The impact of this race still resonates in my heart. Then, there’s Challenge Bahrain 2014, which was held last year; it was my first half distance ironman race, and winning the Bahraini women’s category made it extra special. Last but not the least, I will always remember Ironman New Zealand 2015; it helped me understand what kind of person I am – the kind that sees through every task and give it my all. Despite the challenging distance (3.8 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km run) and cruel weather conditions, I managed to finish the race – my first full Ironman.

Being practically a newbie to triathlons, you’ve had a tremendous success over

Profile 41

the last year. What did it take to make it possible? It takes a lot of dedication, passion, and discipline. There is something about marathons and triathlons; they are just addictive. I would not have been able to compete at such high level without the amazing support from my husband. He’s probably not aware that he is part of my success, but indeed he is. Then again, my result in Dubai International Marathon I owe to a Bahraini veteran runner, Karim Turki. From the first day he saw me run, he believed in me and fully supported me throughout my training regimen. As for my triathlon training, I got a lot of support from the local athletes. I am also thankful for the support and sponsorship I got from Cathy Pacific to take on Challenge Bahrain. After my win, I was approached by Garmco and Skate Shack who sponsored me to take on Ironman New Zealand. The support of these businesses helped me achieve my best. I would also like to thank my friends who trained with me and pushed me to my limits. Without them, none of this would be possible.

Is running your favourite discipline? Out of the three disciplines, yes, running is by far my favourite. I do, however, practice regularly all of them, based on a special tailored programme.

You were part of Bahrain Road Runners (BRR) Committee

and serve as general secretary of the Bahrain Triathlon Association (BTA). How do these two organisations contribute to Bahrain’s sporting scene? I was part of the BRR from 2012 to 2014. On a yearly basis, they organise around ten running events and three triathlons. They have helped take sports to the next level in Bahrain with only a few passionate volunteers who know how to attract international athletes. The BTA is fairly new and it aims to form Bahraini national triathlon team. So far, the team has competed in a few events, nailing a few medals in Abu Dhabi.

Recently, we are seeing a significant increase in the popularity of triathlons in Bahrain. Why do you think that is? Triathlon is a booming sport worldwide, and I believe the main reason is that everyone can take part and everyone is a winner

I always love playing here.” Earlier Britain’s Jamie Murray and Australian partner John Peers lost 3-6 7-6 (6) 9-11 to Croatia’s Marin Draganja and Henri Kontinen of Finland in the men’s doubles final. Mayweather, 38, has said he will fight one more time after the clash with Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The unbeaten American’s fight with Pacquiao is the fifth of a six-fight contract with broadcaster Showtime. WBA and WBC champion Mayweather has won all 47 of his fights, 26 by knockout, in his 19-year professional career. After his defeat of Oscar de la Hoya in May 2007, Mayweather relinquished his WBC light-middleweight title, only to come out of his brief retirement in July to announce his fight with Britain’s Ricky Hatton. Mayweather also retired in 2008 but returned 21 months later in May 2009 to fight Juan Manuel Marquez. The fight against Pacquiao is expected to be the richest in the history of boxing and they will walk away with about £200m between them. Mayweather Sr, 62, commented: “Once you reach that pedigree and make that kind of money, you don’t have to fight no more. Whenever you get in that ring, anything can happen. It looks easy but it ain’t as easy as it looks.” - BBC

WASPS TO BECOME RICHEST RUGBY CLUB IN THE WORLD Wasps say they are on course to become the richest rugby club in the world after announcing their latest financial initiative. They will become the first sports club to launch a retail bond listed on the London Stock Exchange, which is expected to raise up to £35m. That means Wasps are set to pass French giants Toulouse in terms of revenue. The big rise in revenue is a result of Wasps, who beat Exeter on Sunday to consolidate sixth place in the Premiership, buying the Ricoh Arena, in Coventry, and moving from High Wycombe to play in the Midlands. They were previously the second-lowest revenue-generating club in Premiership rugby and now the second highest in Europe. - BBC

DANIEL STURRIDGE: LIVERPOOL STRIKER INJURY DOUBT FOR REST OF SEASON

IF IT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU, YOU’LL FIND A WAY. IF NOT YOU’LL FIND AN EXCUSE-

Liverpool and England striker Daniel Sturridge may not play again this season, says boss Brendan Rodgers. Sturridge, 25, has been sidelined by hip and thigh injuries and has not played since the FA Cup quarter-final win over Blackburn on 8 April. Liverpool have five Premier League games remaining as they look to chase the final qualifying spot for next season’s Champions League. They are seven points behind fourthplaced Manchester United, but can narrow the gap to four points with victory at Hull on Tuesday. Sturridge has managed to play just 18 games for Liverpool this season, scoring five times, compared to a haul of 24 goals from 33 appearances last term. He was sidelined for more than five months from September with a thigh injury, and was forced to miss England’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania in March with a hip problem. - BBC

Promoting Lifestyle Changes... One Post At A Time

As more of our lives move online, our cluttered online feed can tempt us to reach for foods that don’t necessarily support our nutrition goals. No matter where you’re at with your goals, there are always those days where you can’t be bothered to be inspired. Luckily for you, we have found a few accounts that help keep us up to date with workouts, nutrition information and motivation, while remaining clever and entertaining in the process. The only way that you won’t be getting inspired by these accounts, is if you’re not following them.

This month, we asked three experts to answer a set of questions regarding health and nutrition, and here is what they had to say. HEALTH & WELLNESS

Key Change To Take Control Of Your Health The first and most important change is being honest with yourself. Ask yourself, am I satisfied with my health? Am I happy with my body? After you’ve got these two questions out of the way, there are five main steps towards leading a healthy lifestyle: 1. Eat healthy 2. Workout 3. Sleep 4. Avoid stress 5. Drink plenty of water

on taking control of your health

2 3 4 5 6

Gentle Detoxing

I always encourage people to fast; it’s the best and healthiest way to detox. Throughout history, fasting has been known to have a beneficial effect on health, according to both science and Islam.

Foods And Drinks To Get Rid Of Toxins

Water – it’s simple and easy. Just drink your daily dose of water; aim for two to three litres! There are also other types of food that could help, green leafs for instance.

Health Myth You Would Like To Debunk

Eating after six o’clock does not make you fat. A lot of people think eating at night would make them gain weight, and that’s totally not true.

Current Favourite Ingredient

Wasabi; it’s the green paste that tastes a bit funny. I used to mix it with soy sauce and dip my sushi in it, but recently, I eat it with almost everything. It has a lot of benefits for your body and metabolism. It not only has a powerful taste, but also powerful effects on your overall health.

Craving Something Sweet

Key Change To Take Control Of Your Health Make it a lifestyle! When it is a lifestyle and part of your daily life, it doesn’t seem out of the ordinary. I encourage everyone to eat food of quality ensuring there are tons of colours. Also, it is imperative the food intake is in moderation and balanced. Furthermore, movement and exercise is essential to reach optimal health.

Gentle Detoxing Detox has been misunderstood on many levels, because it is taken to an unnecessary and irrelevant extreme. I personally like to juice once or twice a month for two to three days. You take in 1,200 calories in greens and essential minerals and vitamins, therefore there isn’t a lack of caloric intake, and you do not feel famished. On the contrary, you feel refreshed, light, and energetic.

Greens! Anything green! Whether it is wheatgrass, sautéed vegetables, or baked kale – intake of greens leans you out and makes an amazing change to your body inside out.

Health Myth You Would Like To Debunk

Many! Infinite myths! I cannot tolerate discussions about the date and yoghurt diet, the grape leave diet, the boiled egg diet, the cabbage soup diet, and the list goes on. There is no such thing as going on a diet that limits you to specific food items. There is a concept called “change your lifestyle and habits to better yourself” – stick to that please!

Kale – I add it to my salads, I bake it, I juice it! Kale is a superfood that you can snack on; it’s filled with antioxidants and provides vitamin A, C, K, manganese, iron, calcium, fibre, and Omega 3. Per calorie, kale has more iron than beef, more calcium than milk, and 10 per cent more vitamin than spinach. More importantly, it is an anti-inflammatory and low in calories and carbohydrates.

Craving Something Sweet Have a small piece of dark chocolate or three dates; it has always worked miracles for me when those cravings kick in

Key Change To Take Control Of Your Health It’s frankly a change of your general lifestyle in the long run. Improving your eating habits by incorporating healthy food choices, along with practicing portion control. You can eat healthier by making a few simple changes and experimenting with different flavours. Next time you’re cooking something, try to grill, broil, poach, or stir-fry your food instead of frying it. To eat more whole grains, substitute a whole-grain product for a refined product – such as eating whole-wheat bread instead of white bread or brown rice instead of white rice.

Health Equation Lifestyle changes in diet and physical activity are a must. The 70/30 approach is the best long-term approach to weight loss, where 70 per cent of initial weight loss comes from changes in diet and 30 per cent from exercise.

Physical Activity For Everyone Try to walk briskly for at least 30 minutes most days of the week, along with jogging and swimming every once in a while. There are many activities that you can fit into your daily routine – like choosing the stairs instead of the elevator, as it contributes to your total exercise time and is a good way to incorporate movement into your day at work.

Fad Diets I am personally against fad diets, such as the date diet, Atkins diet, water diet and so on. The best diet one can follow is to change their overall lifestyle and eating habits, without depriving your body from the healthy elements that it needs to operate. Even if you were to follow a diet that promises quick weight loss through what is usually an unhealthy and unbalanced diet, you are bound to gain the weight back once you go back to your previous lifestyle.

Current Favourite Ingredient Oats, for it is one of the best natural ingredients with no changes or chemical additions. Not to mention its major benefits in increasing appetite-control hormones, lowering bad cholesterol, helping control blood pressure, and so on.

Craving Something Sweet Try going for healthier alternatives to sweet snacks, such as honey, cinnamon, dates, fruits, and dark chocolate. If you are still craving processed desserts, you can reward yourself in small quantities twice a week.

COOKBOOK FEATURE

Herbs and spices are some of the most potent ingredients for delicious, healthy cooking. Herbs (the flavorful, aromatic fresh or dried leaves of certain plants) and spices (the usually dried aromatic seeds, barks, roots, or rhizomes – underground stems – of certain plants) do so much to make the food you cook taste delicious. I like to keep a good selection of dried herbs and spices in my pantry, to cover a wide range of the kind of recipes I most like to cook; and, with time, you can build your own collection.

Meet A Dietitian Nada Jawahery

What experience do you have in the nutrition and wellness profession? I have experience in medical nutrition therapy, community nutrition, and renal nutrition from my internship in the United States. After returning to Bahrain, I started running a weight loss programme at the RBH called Fresh Start. A group of RBH staff were sponsored as Fresh Start competitors, and the ‘biggest loser’ dropped 22 kilograms. He was very pleased, because he had already tried bariatric surgery and had regained the weight. So, he decided that a healthy lifestyle and nutrition were essential. The Fresh Start programme is available for individual clients at the RBH clinic.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in this field? I was very interested in learning what foods can cure the body of ailments. There are foods that can help lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, and prevent cancer.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

What interests you most about health and nutrition? I am mostly interested in how food and lifestyle can help promote health and weight management.

ada Jawahery is one of Bahrain’s most trusted nutrition professionals and diet consultants, and is currently the chief dietitian at Royal Bahrain Hospital (RBH). She is Bahrain’s first licensed dietitian to earn her degree in Dietetics and Nutrition from the United States of America.

People want a dietitian who has a trusted medical background, who understands their health condition.

Are there any drawbacks to working in this field?

What skills do you consider to be essential to work in this industry? To work in the diet industry, there are many essential skills to consider. For example, it is essential to keep knowledge updated on the latest nutrition trends and research studies.

How has nutrition awareness changed since you started working in the field? My nutrition awareness has grown since I started working in the field. I have learned that some of the drastic weight reduction methods in the industry can be harmful. Consulting a dietitian can help individuals lose weight safely.

Do you see a shift happening in public perceptions of nutrition?

I like to look at the positives. One of the positives is that the field is growing, and scientists are looking for more food cures.

Many people’s awareness has evolved, and they want to know more about healthy nutrition.

What do people look for in a nutritionist or a dietician?

And something fun: What is your favorite healthy snack?

People want a dietitian who can help them lose weight safely. People want a dietitian who has a trusted medical background, who understands their health condition. People look for a dietitian who can help them reduce health risks with foods.

HEALTHY LIVING

I have many favourite healthy snacks, such as toasted sesame seeds with honey, watermelon, and almond cookies

TWO CHEFS’ ADVICE ON

Eating Well I love using dates as a natural sugar substitute. Dates can serve as a sweetener for anything from cakes to salad dressings; the texture and flavour are simply amazing!

Chef Mark James Dickey, baker and pastry chef at Good Food

My favourite egg vegan substitute is combining 1 tablespoon of flaxseed meal with 3 tablespoons of water and allowing it to sit for about five minutes. This stuff is magic--the best egg substitute I’ve used so far.

RECIPE GOOD FOOD VEGAN BARS (Serves 6 bars)

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

Prunes pitted and chopped - 150 g Dates pitted and chopped - 150 g Raw cashew nuts - 300 g Raw almonds - 50 g Cocoa powder - 65 g Unsweetened shredded coconut - 40 g Vanilla extract - 2 tbsp. Cold water - 2 to 3 tbsp.

Combine chopped prunes, dates, cashews, almonds, cocoa powder in a food processor. Pulse and process all together until the texture is coarse. Add coconut and a quick pulse, then add vanilla and a little water at a time, until it reaches a dry but moist dough consistency. Scrape the dough mixture into lined tin and press evenly with spatula. Chill for an hour before portioning and serving.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

If you love having cream, but are avoiding dairy, then I’ve got a trick for you. Chill a can of coconut milk, then scoop out the coconut fat that separates and whip it just like whipped cream. As expected, it does taste strongly of coconut, so if you’re not a coconut fan, this is not for you.

How You Can

Benefit From All Your Stress

By Heidi Grant Halvorson

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Healthy Living 65

his might sound a little crazy, but what if it’s the very fact that we assume stress is bad that’s actually making it so bad for us? And what if there were another way to think about stress - a way that might actually make it a force for good in our lives? Well there is, according to new research from Yale’s Alia Crum and Peter Salovey, and Shawn Achor, author of The Happiness Advantage. Let’s take a step back, and begin with a different question: What is stress? Generally speaking, it’s the experience or anticipation - of difficulty or adversity. We humans, along with other animals, have an instinctive physical response to stressors. It includes activation of the sympathetic nervous system (“fight or flight”), inhibition of the parasympathetic nervous system (“rest and digest”), and the release of adrenaline and cortisol. But what does all of that do? In short, it primes the pump - we become more aroused and more focused, more ready to respond physically and mentally to whatever is coming our way. Kind of sounds like a good thing, doesn’t it? But wait, you say, can’t chronic stress make us sick? Can’t it take a toll on our immune functioning? Yes…but there is plenty of evidence that stress can also enhance immunity. Well then, you point out, can’t it leave us feeling depressed and lethargic? Yes… but studies show that it can also create mental toughness, increase clarity, result in greater appreciation for one’s circumstances, and contribute to a sense of confidence built on a history of overcoming of obstacles (which is the best, most long-lasting kind of confidence you can have). So stress is bad, and somehow also good. How can we make sense of the paradoxical nature of stress? I’ll bet right now you are saying to yourself, it’s the amount of stress that matters. Low levels may be good, but high levels are still definitely bad. (i.e., What doesn’t kill you might make you stronger….but too much stress is probably going kill you.) The problem with this theory - which was once the dominant theory among psychologists, too - is that by and large, it doesn’t appear to be true. The amount of stress you encounter is a surprisingly poor predictor of whether it will leave you worse (or better) off. As it turns out, your mindset about stress may be the most important

predictor of how it affects you. As Crum, Salovey, and Achor discovered, people have different beliefs about stress. Some people - arguably most people - believe that stress is a bad thing. They agreed with statements like “The effects of stress are negative and should be avoided,” and the researchers called this the stress-isdebilitating mindset. Those who instead agreed that “Experiencing stress facilitates my learning and growth” had what they called a stress-is-enhancing mindset. In their studies, Crum and colleagues began by identifying stress mindsets among a group of nearly 400 employees of an international financial institution. They found that those employees who had stress-is-enhancing mindsets (compared to stress-is-debilitating) reported having better health, greater life satisfaction, and superior work performance. That’s already rather amazing, but here’s the best part - your mindset can also

levels of cortisol activity. (It turns out that both too much and too little cortisol release in response to a stressor can have negative physiological consequences. But with the stress-is-enhancing mindset, cortisol release is - like Baby Bear’s porridge - just right.) Taken together, all this research paints a very clear picture: stress is killing you because you believe that it is. Of course, that doesn’t mean you aren’t juggling too many projects at once - each of us has limited time and energy, and people can and do get overworked. But if you can come to see the difficulties and challenges you face as opportunities to learn and grow, rather than as your “daily grind,” then you really can be happier, healthier, and more effective. Maybe you don’t need less stress - you just need to think about your stress a little differently

Stress-is-enhancing believers were more likely to use productive strategies, like seeking out feedback on a stress-inducing task. change! If you have been living with a stressis-debilitating mindset (like most of us), you don’t have to be stuck with it. A subset of the 400 employees in the aforementioned study were shown a series of threeminute videos over the course of the following week, illustrating either the enhancing or debilitating effects of stress on health, performance, and personal growth. Those in the stress-is-enhancing group (i.e., the lucky ones) reported significant increases in both well-being and work performance. Yet another study showed that stress-isenhancing believers were more likely to use productive strategies, like seeking out feedback on a stress-inducing task. They were also more likely to show “optimal”

News NEW BLOOD TEST SHOWS PROMISE IN CANCER FIGHT In the usual cancer biopsy, a surgeon cuts out a piece of the patient’s tumor, but researchers in labs across the world are now testing a potentially transformative innovation. They call it the liquid biopsy, and it is a blood test that has only recently become feasible with the latest exquisitely sensitive techniques. It is showing promise in finding tiny snippets of cancer DNA in a patient’s blood. The hope is that a simple blood draw — far less onerous for patients than a traditional biopsy or a CT scan — will enable oncologists to quickly figure out whether a treatment is working and, if it is, to continue monitoring the treatment in case the cancer develops resistance. Failing treatments could be abandoned quickly, sparing patients grueling side effects and allowing doctors to try alternatives. -NY TIMES

CHILDREN WITH ADHD MORE LIKELY TO HAVE EATING DISORDER A new study has suggested that children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder are more likely than other children to also have loss of control eating syndrome - a condition similar to binge eating disorder. The finding suggests the two conditions may share a common biological mechanism. Loss of control eating syndrome shares many diagnostic criteria with adult binge eating disorder, including an inability to stop eating even if the individual wants to. The research, published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, could potentially lead to the development of treatment that works for both conditions. Although many children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) lose weight when taking stimulant drugs to treat their condition, experts have found associations between ADHD and overweight and obesity. Data have also linked ADHD with adult binge eating disorder. However, there are limited data in children with loss of control eating syndrome (LOC-ES) - a condition that shares many of the same diagnostic criteria as binge eating disorder and is typified by an inability to stop eating at certain times. - MEDICAL NEWS TODAY HEALTH & WELLNESS

SCIENTISTS IDENTIFY KEY PROTEIN IN IMMUNE RESPONSE TO ALLERGIES AND WORMS Researchers have found a new way that the body controls inflammation when it is responding to parasitic worm infections or during allergy reactions like asthma attacks. They believe their findings will lead to new treatments for controlling inflammation during worm infections and allergic reactions like asthma. The researchers focused on dendritic cells one of the first responders to worms or allergens. Dendritic cells recognize the type of infection and switch on the appropriate inflammation response by activating a particular subset of helper T cells. However, while we know this much, the underlying biology of the recognition and response to worms and allergens is still somewhat of a mystery. For example, how do the dendritic cells activate the helper T cells? - MEDICAL NEWS TODAY

FINAL TRIAL RESULTS FOR WORLD’S MOST ADVANCED MALARIA VACCINE PUBLISHED Final trial data for the first malaria vaccine candidate to reach phase 3 of clinical testing suggests that the vaccine is partially effective up to 4 years after being given. According to its researchers, these results suggest the vaccine could prevent a significant number of new cases, particularly in areas with high rates of transmission. The vaccine candidate - RTS,S/AS01 - was found to be most effective against clinical and severe malaria among children compared with young infants. The level of protection provided by the vaccination decreased over time, but a booster dose was able to prolong its effectiveness, increasing the average number of cases prevented. Malaria is caused by a parasite and is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. The disease causes recurrent bouts of chills and fever and is estimated to kill around 1 million people worldwide each year. At present, efforts to treat and control malaria are being severely compromised in West Africa due to the Ebolaoutbreak. According to a new study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, up to 10,900 extra malaria deaths may have occurred last year in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia on account of the disruption to health care services caused by the virus. An additional 3,900 deaths were also attributable to the interruption of deliveries of insecticidetreated nets. - MEDICAL NEWS TODAY

COULD EXTRA SLEEP IMPROVE MEMORY FOR PEOPLE WITH ALZHEIMER’S?

Numerous studies have associated sleep with improved memory. But can sleep improve memory enough to help patients with Alzheimer’s? This is what researchers from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis set out to investigate. Paul Shaw, PhD, professor of neurobiology at the Washington University School of Medicine, and colleagues conducted their study on three groups of fruit flies - whose brains regulate sleep in a similar way to humans. In each group of flies, the researchers disabled a gene to cause different memory problems,

but all of which interfered with their ability to make new memories. In one group, the disabled gene triggered the development of a memory condition similar to Alzheimer’s disease. Another group of flies had problems making brain connections that encode memories while another group had too many of these brain connections. Stimulating brain cells involved in sleep, increasing the production of a protein associated with sleep or administration of a drug that simulates the activity of a chemical messenger involved in sleep. The additional amount of sleep the flies received is the equivalent to an extra 3-4 hours sleep each day over a minimum 2-day period in humans, according to the researchers. While further research is needed to fully understand the association between additional sleep and memory problems, the team believes their findings pave the way for new treatment strategies for neurological conditions that affect memory, like Alzheimer’s. - MEDICAL NEWS TODAY

RESEARCHERS REVEAL HOW BREAST MILK PROTECTS AGAINST SEVERE INTESTINAL DISEASE IN PRETERM INFANTS Researchers have long hailed breast milk for its ability to boost an infant’s immune system. Now, a new study led by Johns Hopkins researchers provides further evidence of this after discovering how breast milk can protect against a severe intestinal disease that affects preterm babies. Researches have found that a protein in animal and human breast milk - called epidermal growth factor (EGF) - staved off necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm mice. Breast milk can protect premature babies against intestinal damage but how and why it did so has been somewhat of a mystery. NEC is a disease characterized by inflammation and death of intestinal tissue. It is most common in preterm babies, who account for up to 80% of cases. It is a severe disorder, claiming the lives of around 1 in 4 preterm babies who develop it. At present, treatment for NEC in

preterm infants involves the removal of the dead intestinal tissue. While this strategy can be effective, Dr. Hackam and colleagues note that infants are often left with an inadequate intestine, which raises their risk of long-term complications, such as short bowel syndrome. As such, the researchers say new treatments for NEC are urgently required, and they hope their recent findings may fulfill this need. - MEDICAL NEWS TODAY

Older people are happier than you.

Why?

HEALTH & WELLNESS

IN THE NEWS

number of studies have demonstrated a major upside to getting older: As people age, they tend to become happier and more satisfied with their lives. New research from Buffalo University and Northwestern University hints at one possible reason behind this improvements in well-being -- people are more trusting as they age, which in turn carries a number of benefits for

their well-being. “When we think of old age, we often think of decline and loss,” Claudia Haase, a professor of social policy at Northwestern and one of the study’s authors, said in a statement. “But a growing body of research shows that some things actually get better as we age.” In the first study, researchers studied the link between age and trust in a sample of nearly 200,000 people from 83 countries at different points in the past 30 years. A second study followed over 1,200 Americans of different ages (Millennials, Gen X and Baby Boomers) over time. This increased level of trust in turn led to improvements in well-being and happiness. “Trust may benefit well-being because a sense of trust in other people allows us to derive support, comfort and pleasure from our social relationships,” Haase said. “People who trust more are also happier. Moreover, our study shows that people who trust more are not only happier today, but they also experience increases in happiness over time.” - CNN

BRAUN SERIES 7

Braun’s new hi-tech toy ‘reads’ your face and adjusts to the density of your stubble. A mere 10,000 microvibrations in every stroke stimulate hairs, making them easier to cut and giving you a closer shave in fewer strokes.

GARMIN VIVOACTIVE

6 PACK FITNESS PURSUIT 500

The Garmin Vivoactive is a super-smart activity tracker that can keep pace with the most active lifestyle. It has a battery that just won’t quit, and it’s safe for swimming, with great swim-tracking features. Its signature features are built-in GPS, smartphone notifications, and its own app store. While it doesn’t have an optical heart rate monitor, like the Fitbit Surge does, you can bundle it with a Garmin heart rate chest strap .

With its many compartments, this is a veritable Orient Express of backpacks. As well as room for your gym clothing, laptop and notebooks, it has three insulated gel packs to keep food fresh and five leak-proof slide-out meal containers to allow even the most caloriedepleted gym-goer to refuel. There are zippered pockets for supplements or cutlery, two mesh pockets for water bottles and an external cord for shoes or wet towels.

GADGETS

BIG BATTLESTAR Foam rollers are fine tools, but in 2015 the mobility buzzphrase will be ‘tissue shearing’ – smashing your squat-addled glutes into better shape from a variety of angles. The Battlestar is made of firm-gripping urethane to do just that – and it comes with a brace of handles for improved rehab.

SLEEP BUG

GLOW SWORKIT No gym? No time? No problem! Sworkit is designed with busy people in mind, with high-intensity bodyweight workouts that you can make as short as five minutes and as long as an hour. Choose the style of exercise you’re looking for (strength, cardio, yoga, or stretching) and discover dozens of different workouts— or go ahead and use the app to create a custom workout. FASHION & STYLE

MYFITNESSPAL Counting calories has never been easier thanks to this robust app. You can log most meals in under a minute by searching MyFitnessPal’s extensive database of brand name foods. If you made something from scratch, you can input the recipe, and the app will estimate its nutritional information, too. And, once you start regularly using the app, it gets to know your diet and saves a list of your favorite foods that can be added to your daily intake with just the tap of a button.

APP PICKS

Ladies, this is the perfect app to get more in tune with your body (and specifically your menstrual cycle). Glow is a super sophisticated ovulation calendar that tracks ovulation, mood, symptoms, and even medications to help pinpoint your next period, whether you’re attempting to get pregnant or trying to avoid it. Then it can help give recommendations of when is the best time to hit the sheets.

Can’t fall asleep to the sound of noisy neighbours or honking cars? Sleep Bug is the perfect on-demand white noise machine. Get transported to the beach, a Zen garden, or the middle of a jungle with the push of a button. There’s also a custom timer and even the ability to add noises—like rain or a whale’s call—to the scene.
