Winter is almost here and everyone is out to enjoy various outdoor sporting activities. From paddle boarding, kayak fishing to karting and motorsports, this month is surely jam-packed with fun activities that the whole family can enjoy. Last month, Japan won their first AFC U-19 Championship against Saudi Arabia at the country’s National Stadium. Bahrain football team has put their best performance and managed to reach the quarter final but was defeated by the visiting Vietnam team. It was the first time Bahrain hosted such a huge international event in the country. Hats off to the organising committee and all the people involved for bringing together such a well-executed event.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

I

n this exclusive interview, Mohammed Shahid, CEO of KHK MMA and President of Brave CF, gave us the wonderful opportunity to learn more about Bahrain’s largest mixed martial arts combat federation.

SAFETY AND REGULATION The fighter’s safety is important not just inside the ring but also when preparing for a fight. Mohammed Shahid explained, “The first thing that we want common people to know is that there are rules; not just a few rules but there are a lot of rules in the sport of mixed martial art. The second thing is that we have a regulatory body the Bahrain Mixed Martial Arts Federation. We make sure that this regulatory body is not just strong within the country or within the region, but has a strong pace and brand name throughout the world.” In the history of Asian mixed martial arts events, Mohammed Shahid said that they have seen fighters from Japan who come in and fight at 60kg and in the following event they’ll see them fight at 80kg. These fighters don’t have fat and their bodies are filled with muscles; everybody

@powerupmag

SPORTS & FITNESS

knows that there’s something going on. Mohammed Shahid explained that Brave don’t want a fighter to come down from India or the Middle East to fight with a guy from another country who has been taking huge amounts of steroids. This is a very strong and essential point that they have to address as it could lead to a very dangerous outcome if they are not cautious of who’s fighting and how they are preparing for the ring. Mohammed Shahid added “Oftentimes, we take money from our own pocket and we spend from the company itself to make sure that our event is regulated very well because that’s of utmost importance for us.”

CUTTING AND LOSING WEIGHT Mohammed Shahid is one of the fighters who has fought and cut a lot of weight. In his career time, he has cut 25 kilograms a week. People usually don’t understand what cutting weight and losing weight is. Cutting weight is different from losing weight. Losing weight refers to the general attempt to battle the bulge that comes from too much eating and too little activity. Cutting refers to shedding the excess fat gain following bulking (eating a calorie surplus to hopefully gain some muscle). In either case, achieving fat loss is the goal. Losing weight is the right thing to do, but what most fighters do is cutting weight which means that it is done quickly. Our body is made up of 70% of water and what happens

when you cut down 60% of that water? “I’ve done a lot to cut down to this weight and if you ask the fighters who saw me when I was cutting weight, it was the scariest version of me. I’ve had times when I see my face in the mirror and forget what’s happened to my face – I was changing. My eyes were one inch inside from my eye socket and I look and freak out at myself. I cannot sleep because I don’t feel the air and I don’t feel the coldness of the room. I remember that my brother was lying down next to me in the hotel room at the fight venue and he was freezing because I switched the temperature room to 15 or 14 degrees Celcius. I cannot sleep because my eyes wouldn’t close. I have reached to a point where I had to cut so much weight which is not healthy; I know it because I was blind from one eye the following morning. It was a very dangerous position that I have put myself into,” Mohammed Shahid said. There are a lot of stories about people losing their lives because of cutting

weight. Cutting weight is what people do to achieve excellence in mixed martial arts. The tiniest things matter to reach the highest level of the sport. At a level like Brave Combat Federation, people do whatever it takes to win. However, KHK MMA’s Brave Combat Federation has guidelines to ensure that fighters doesn’t go as far as cutting down weight.

ENSURING THE FIGHTERS’ SAFETY According to Mohammed Shahid, it is extremely difficult to control and monitor people who are cutting down weight because they are looking at 6,000 fighters around the world. What usually happens is that matchmakers look at the fighter’s history, get their weight category and then they go forward. What KHK MMA’s Brave Combat Federation does is personally making sure that when the fighter arrives in Bahrain, they have a medical team ready that assures the weight of the fighter before and after the game. “I usually cut 12 kilograms

November 2016 | PowerUp | 17

SPORTS & FITNESS

to 15 kilograms in a week before my fight and it is okay for me. Not everybody is the same and I was lucky to go through it without hurting myself. You can damage your liver and other parts of your body while losing weight, so we ensure the fighter’s safety regardless of what the fighter or the manager or everybody else thinks,” Mohammed Shahid added. In every BRAVE event, there are three cage side referees to ensure that if any kind of knockouts, submissions or any kind of damage happens, they will be able to stop and call in a doctor. There are three cage side referees and eight in the medic room. Paramedics and ambulances are also waiting outside the venue in case of emergencies. Medical support, medical check-ups and fighters’ health are the top priorities for Brave in their whole event.

WHY MIXED MARTIALS ARTS IS SAFER THAN BOXING OR KICKBOXING

18 | PowerUp | November 2016

Mixed Martial Arts may seem very harsh but what a lot of people don’t understand is that a people who box get a lot of concussion in the head. In boxing, fighters are only throwing their hands to their heads or bodies for 36 minutes (12 rounds and 3 minutes per round). If ordinary people sat down and start hitting their heads with their hands for 36 minutes, they are going to have a concussion. Comring boxing to MMA Mohammed Shahid said, “When you compare that to MMA, you hardly see two guys’ hands hitting

Loman? He caught him one good one. Yes, that damaged Loman but he was scared to end it because he would close distance, so he didnt hit him again. But in boxing, you hit again. You guys couldn’t close? Move back and hit again. In MMA, fighters halt and there’s no more hitting happening. That’s one of the reasons why MMA is so safe. The damage in Mixed Martial Arts is very low -- it might be the lowest amongst any of the combat sports out there.”

MMA AS A SOLUTION Mixed Martial arts is a sport that helps people find solutions. In this sport, you would be able to spot danger

and immediately switch it to a position that is not dangerous. A person who trains MMA learns how to find solutions which enables him/ her turn into a great business manager, a good employee, and he could also turn to be a good family man in future. Mohammed Shahid is a living example of this. He said, “I turned out to be a fighter. I have no education in school, I have no qualifications of being a white collar in my life and now I’m running the largest mixed martial arts combat sports company in Bahrain and we’re targeting to be the largest organisation in Brazil, Europe, India and Middle East.” What KHK MMA build is more on execution. “You have to execute and when you execute, you know you can do it. There’s no question about it, there’s no doubting that. That’s the benefit of mixed martial arts in total.” Mohammed Shahid added.

WHICH RULES ARE THE MMA FOLLOWING?

www.powerup-mag.com

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

KHK MMA’s Brave Combat Federation is following the Unified MMA Rules. However, there are a lot of rules in the Unified MMA rules that are not good for this sport. For example the Unified MMA Rules have a rule called ‘12-6 elbows’ which means from ‘12 o’clock to 6 o’clock’ position.

SPORTS & FITNESS

WHAT MAKES KHK MMA UNIQUE? One of the biggest goodwill KHK MMA has done can be seen in their past achievements. Mohammed Shahid said, “We have got the trust of most of the world

“The fighters don’t work for us – we work for the fighters. That’s what a promotion should be. If the fighters are not satisfied with this promotion that’s bringing up their value then what’s the point?” Fighters don’t do this move to anybody because that’s disqualification and is considered as banned. KHK MMA incorporates most of the Unified MMA rules and create a tailored rules considering the protection of the fighter’s safety.

PREPARATION FOR BRAVE 2 KHK MMA’s Brave Combat Federation has something different in store for BRAVE 2. They will bring in some of the biggest experts around the world to make this second event stronger in terms of protection and compelling quality for the international world watch. They aim to show the world that BRAVE Combat Federation is a truly global promotion unlike any other promotions that say they’re a global promotion but what they have is only a global attention. However, Mohammed Shahid said that they are not here to compete with other promotions. Mohammed Shahid explained, “BRAVE 2 is easier from the first event because we’ve had enough international exposure in the first event. This time people are reaching out to us and it is much easier for us to tell a story of what Brave is.”

athletes. People will come to know that these fighters have value, which is what KHK MMA aspires to create for them. KHK MMA competed in four championships: two world and two European championship. That was the first time our fighters in Bahrain jumped up and compete in world championships. We became the first GCC country to win three medals in four of the championships. That’s unbelievable. Why should we stop there?” Brave Combat Federation will be a backbone to creating a strong and huge system by the next two years. By July 2019, everyone will see Mixed Martial Arts attain a completely new pathway for the whole world to unite. Brave Combat Federation aims to create aplatform where the whole world can unite. They also envision every talented fighter who wants to be able to have the opportunity to be a part of this sport.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE FIGHTERS In Brave Combat Federation, fighters are not only going to fight at the promotion battles for global promotion. The most

important thing for these fighters is to not have their values stuck in their region. Shahid shares his vision, “We want to take them world wide and give them global exposure. We have extraordinary media agencies and promotion. We work 100% on how much exposure our fighters get.” Aside from the worldwide exposure and promotion, Brave Combat Federation also offers financial support for these fighters. “The fighters don’t work for us – we work for the fighters. That’s what a promotion should be. If the fighters are not satisfied with this promotion that’s bringing up their value then what’s the

point?” Shahid added.

WHAT CAN BRAVE OFFER TO THE BAHRAIN’S YOUNG GENERATION? When Mohammed Shahid was in Bahrain as a fighter, he has no one and no way to look up to. He wanted to look up to somebody and say “I’ve walked this pathway.” But now, the young generation already has a pathway to follow that would lead them in becoming one of the best fighters in the world. On the other hand, Mohammed Shahid believes that he cannot give the youth

He said, “When I scout, I do not look for talents and whether or not you have great skills. I look for whether you have a passionate heart because that’s the only requirement I need from them.” In line with this, they have found fourteen young talents who really wanted to be a part of MMA and do whatever it takes to reach Brave level. The question asked is “how badly do they want it”?

WHEN ARE YOU READY TO FIGHT? Many of Mohammed Shahid’s students come and ask him, “Coach, when am I ready to fight?” and he says to them, “If anybody tells you when you’re ready to fight, leave the gym immediately,” because no coach or anybody can actually tell them when they are ready to fight. He added, “The funny part about it is you’re only ready when you’re ready to fight. It is not about how much you know or how much you learn, it’s when your heart says ‘I want to do it so badly’ then you do it”.

IS BRAVE COMING TO UAE? 20 | PowerUp | November 2016

MMA RULES

Safety is the utmost importance for the Brave Combat Federation which is why their association is following the Unified Rules and Other Important Regulations of Mixed Martial Arts strictly.

A

ccording to the Unified MMA Rules, “Mixed martial arts” means the unarmed combat involving the use, subject to any applicable limitations set forth in these Unified Rules and other regulations of the applicable Commission, of a combination of techniques from different disciplines of 22 | PowerUp | November 2016

the martial arts, including, without limitation, grappling, submission holds, kicking and striking. Mixed Martial Arts may look a bit harsher and more dangerous than other combat sports like boxing but it is actually safer for the fighters. The severity of the injuries in MMA is less compared to boxing because the former is more controlled. Boxing has

a total of up to 9 to 12 rounds (three-minute per round) while MMA has 3 rounds only. Round length or section 12 of the Unified MMA Rules states that “each nonchampionship mixed martial arts contest is to be for 3 rounds, each round no more than 5 minutes duration, with a rest period of 1 minute between each round”. MMA has fewer rounds than boxing.

Instances like eye poking, heel kicks to the kidney and clavicle grabbing are huge safety issues that are addressed in the Unified MMA Rules. Section 15 says that the following acts constitute fouls in a contest or exhibition of mixed martial arts and may result in penalties, at the discretion of the referee, if committed: www.powerup-mag.com

Boxers usually direct their strikes and hits to their opponent’s head. This makes the severity of injuries in boxing more dangerous than MMA. In MMA, fighters attain less serious injuries like cuts, @powerupmag

sprains, and bruises unlike in boxing where fighters get concussions, broken bones and other perilous damages. MMA matches are also stopped by the referee. According to the Unified MMA Rules, “the referee is the sole arbiter of a contest and is the only individual authorized to stop a contest. The referee

may take advice from the ringside physician and/or the Commission with respect to the decision to stop a contest.” This also means that when a fighter could not defend himself any longer, the fight will be stopped immediately. Aside from disqualification, decision, forfeit and knockout,

MMA allows for fighters to submit by physically or verbally tapping out. Fighters are able to concede and end the fight by submission. There are many ways to win an MMA match other than hitting your opponent. In boxing, the only way out is to punch your opponent’s head or his body.

After the success of Brave the Beginning, Brave Combat Federation will make its swift return on December 2nd and once again will take place at Khalifa Sports City in Isa, Bahrain. Find out what is in store for Brave 2 “Dynasty”.

S

eptember 23rd saw the birth of a new era in mixed martial arts, and sports entertainment in the middleeast, the Brave Combat Federation era with “Brave The Beginning”. The fully packed Khalifa Sports City arena witnessed an epic sequence of fights which involved some of the finest talent the world of mixed martial arts has to offer. The cage hosted some unforgettable moments as Mohammed Atif and HamzaKooheji announced to the world that Bahraini MMA is alive and kicking with huge victories in front of their family and friends. The Boogeyman Richie Martinez, who arrived with such a big reputation and a black belt in BJJ, was dismantled by a hungry Ahmed Amir, who proved that JiuJitsu is also prominent in the arsenal of middle-eastern fighters. Was that the shock of the night? Or was it Gadzhimusa Gaziev’s right hand which shattered the consciousness of the heavy favorite Thiago Vieira who came in undefeated and left not so? How about the main event as Abdul Kareem Al Selwady

made an emphatic statement to the MMA world, finishing Rami Aziz in the first round and making it very clear he has raised his level and is ready to conquer the world at just 21 years old. So many special moments permeated the Brave 1 “The Beginning” fight card and it was truly an explosive start to its legacy in not just mixed martial arts, but in sports entertainment. “Brave combat federation, owned and operated by KHK MMA, has made a big impact in the sports entertainment and marketing industry in the kingdom of Bahrain,” said CEO Mohammed Shahid. “Brave combat federation is the first sports and entertainment company to be established in the country. On September 23rd we took the sports entertainment industry in the region to a new level with one of the biggest MMA events seen in the Middle East with a week full of entertainment and action to after parties. Following Brave 1’s huge success, and which such huge goals to fulfill, it wasn’t time to rest on their laurels. Brave got straight back to work and started working on their next installment which will take place once again in Isa, Bahrain at Khalifa Sports City on December 2nd. How could the Brave product be improved? Add more world class fighters to the Brave roster, which is exactly what they did. The acquisition of two incredible talents was just announced as Brave welcomed bantamweight Walel Watson (13-8) and featherweight prospect Alex “Leko” Da Silva (17-0). The former is a proven talent at the highest level, from Team Hurricane Awesome in San Diego, who has already fought many of the best bantamweight fighters in the world. The latter is a scary Brazilian featherweight, whose career so far has been nothing short of spectacular. He’s

amassed 17 finishes from his 17 professional fights and looks to have star potential; that’s the kind of talent Brave is bringing into the roster. Brave is about skill, excitement, action, finishing fights and entertaining the fans and that is clear to see from their choice of fighters. The roster is only the beginning of the improvements Brave have been making behind the scenes. Mohammed Shahid, CEO of KHK MMA and President of Brave CF, said: “KHK MMA is looking to get more content to the fans and people through a digital distribution channel KHK TV that will feature exclusive events, 100s of fights and combat sports on demand and original content to the people.” “Brave combat federation reaches the fans through bravefights.com as well as social media pages on Facebook Twitter and Instagram, we are constantly looking to innovate these resources,” he added. Finally, for Brave 2: “Dynasty” to usurp its

predecessor Brave 1, it must have match-ups. Thrilling match-ups between fighters of similar skill levels, who will leave everything in the cage and always be hunting for the finish. Cue the return of one of Brave 1’s biggest winners, Masio “Lobo: Fullen. He suppressed the wild and wonderful Abdul Muneer in the first round of their battle, through skillfully taking the fight to the ground, hence removing Muneer’s best weapons, and delivering brutal ground to end the night for the brave “Cutman” from India. Fullen will not only return, but also will fight for the first Brave title, against a formidable opponent making his Brave debut, Alan Omer (19-5). The Iraqi from Stallion Cage, at the age of 28 years old, has a wealth of experience and has fought at the top level for many years now. This will be a truly epic title fight and Brave has given us one more mouth-watering clash to ensure our saliva is still flowing, and it sees the return of “Deadshot” Guziev, who earned his place on this card by knocking out Thiago “Monstro” Viera in the first round. He has been matchedup against Carl “The Bomber” Booth, a bruising English Welterweight with dynamite

in his fists, lighting fast combinations and ruthless finishing ability – couple that with the KO potential in Guziev’s right hand and we have a truly electric encounter which could be over in a flash. These great fights will soon be available to fight fans throughout the world, via the medium of live streaming and other innovative techniques in the digital media, as the President Mohammed Shahid has promised. “With the global broadcasts in the near future, Brave CF will be the biggest media platform in the kingdom of Bahrain on digital media and in terms of fan engagement. Brave introduces to Bahrain an opportunity for change in the marketing industry from traditional marketing to a more digital based content. With high class VIP from ambassadors to business men from around the world at the 1st brave event it is an event for everyone.” Everyone must wait just six short weeks before the next Brave spectacle, which is already promising to be blockbuster. Paddle boarding and kayaking is becoming popular in Bahrain. It provides a full-body workout and is a great cross-training option. It is also a fun outdoor activity that you can do with family and friends to get out on the water and enjoy nature. www.powerup-mag.com

n the quest of promoting paddling sport in Bahrain, Hussain Bader is organizing the first kayak and SUP fun race this November. Sharing his passion Hussain said, “Kayak and SUP race is a famous sport all over the world, with World Series and tournaments. The goal of this event is to introduce a fun challenging sport open for the public to participate. It’s time the sport gets promoted and taken to a new level in this part of the world and it is my personal goal to achieve that.”

SURFSKIS

To join the race, the first thing you need is a surfski. Light weight surf skis are made of composite layers of epoxy or polyester resinbonded cloth: fibreglass, kevlar, carbon fibre or a mixture. The weight of a Surfski varies from 10kg to 20kg depending on the fiber material and construction method. The paddles (wing paddles) are made out of carbon fiber. The paddle blades are designed as a spoon and can weigh less than 1kg.

SUP RACE

Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP) is a combination of kayaking and surfing. Stand up paddle boarders stand on their boards and use a paddle to propel themselves through the water. In a 2013 report, identified SUP as the outdoor sporting activity with the most first-time participants in the United States that year.

There will also be plenty of fun beach activities for the entire family during the day. Make sure your paddle is the right way Make sure the blade is vertical providing you the best angle through the middle of the stroke for the most power.

and make sure they are in the back when you paddle. Fins at the back help keep the board straight while you paddle, this is called tracking, and help with grip while you paddle on the water. Paddle using your core Your core is the strongest muscles of your body and will give the most effective power for your paddle stroke. Just using your arms to paddle, will be very tiring and will not provide much power. Keep your distance Paddle boards are big and they can hurt. Be mindful of other people and make sure you have plenty of room in standing, falling and paddling.

PADDLE

Stand up paddles have an angle or “elbow” in the shaft for maximum efficiency. Make sure to choose a paddle that’s roughly 6” to 8” taller than you are. Size your paddle on the longer side for flat water use and the shorter side for use in the surf. The blade is typically bent at a slight angle to the shaft to allow for more forward reach when taking a stroke.

LEASH

This actually goes for all stand up paddle boarders but the sooner you are aware how vital a leash is in any kind of condition the safer you and everyone else will be when you are paddling. A sup leash keeps your paddle board attached to you with a Velcro strap around your ankle (or calf) that is attached to the paddleboard. Leashes come in a variety of sizes, and the general rule is to use a leash around the same size or slightly smaller than your board. In the event of a fall, currents and winds can quickly sweep your paddle board away from you.

The duo controlled the final race on land and on sea from the start while leaving the other teams battling for minor medals. Accordingly, Isa Karimi and Ahmed Al Thawadi won the second place while Hassan Ahmed and Abdulla Al Jower rounded the podium. The winning team got a cash prize as well as sporting accessories valued at about BHD1,000. “This was an unprecedented race for Bahrain, and the outcome was totally unexpected. One person couldn’t have made it to the championship alone, so it was definitely a team effort that got us to the top.” Said the duo of Mohamed Khalil and Salman Isa. The event started early in the morning with scrutineering, where the quad bikes and the jet skis @powerupmag

world where your passion keeps blazing, it makes you feel youthful when you’re in it. You learn a lot about your body when you do sports. You will discover the beauty of it, it’s capacity and its limitations. I consider triathlon as the pinnacle of sports. It involves three of the toughest endurance sports in the world. They say that endurance cycling is the toughest sport, well triathlon has that. It also has running which is world’s famous sport, including

Yes I am diabetic, but when I am in my triathlon gear, diabetes goes on vacation somewhere, and I become normal just like you, until I pass the finish line.

In case you don’t know, I am DIAMAN, and so is every diabetic person in sports. We are superheroes of our own, because we have become better human beings after being diagnosed with Diabetes.

F

rom the previous article, many people were curious on how I go about my daily routine of working out at least twice a day, to continue being at the status of participating in Ironman whenever I want. Well obviously, nutrition is vital, everything else is complementary.

38 | PowerUp | November 2016

Being a diabetic, I need to be careful and closely monitor what I eat. Diet is an important part in achieving your goal in being athletic and healthy. For some people dieting is a way to keep their body in shape and look good. The goal of enjoying the sport that I love despite my condition, is what drives me to live an active and vigorous lifestyle. Sports is a

swimming, an exercise that any physician recommends. I play sports not just for triathlon but to be able to keep a healthy lifestyle and to feel young. Yes I am a diabetic, but when I am in my triathlon gear, diabetes goes on vacation somewhere, and I become normal just like everyone else until I reach the finish line. The longer the triathlon is, the longer its vacation is. One thing I learned throughout my journey is that not all bodies are the same. Our bodies are like engines, and not all engines are made in Germany. There are American engines, that are somewhat inefficient but strong, and there are Japanese ones as well that are very efficient though not as powerful as the others. Then there are those that are in between. What is good for one engine is not necessarily right for another. It is your reponsibility to know your engine which is your body. You will know yourself, your limits, and your strengths,

condition. I became friends with it and it turned out to be the source of my strength. This is how you become a Diaman!

TIPS FROM DIAMAN DO NOT EAT ANYTHING IN THE LAST THREE TO FOUR HOURS BEFORE YOU SLEEP. Keep your dinner light, and be gentle to your stomach. It is much better to wake up hungry than full. YOU DON’T NEED TO BE VEGAN OR VEGETARIAN TO EAT LIKE ONE. Throw in a few days of your week to try out different “styles” of diet, give your body some days off from certain food type. Third, which everyone agrees on, treat food like fuel. Think about what you will do during the day, if you will be sitting down doing nothing, then you don’t need to fuel yourself as if you’re going to run a marathon, and vice versa.

APPLYING ITU RULES IN

BAHRAIN TRIATHLON In PowerUp’s exclusive interview with Bahrain Triathlon Association President Sheikh Saqer bin Salman Al Khalifa and Abbas Moosa Buhassan explains how the association is implementing the International Triathlon Union (ITU) rules in Bahrain triathlon events.

I

t begins with specialisation: everyone should be specialised in what they are supposed to be doing. Sheikh Saqer explained, “We have great associations, groups of people and clubs but what we lack is specialisation. People have to be specialised in their field of sports.” How does the Bahrain Triathlon Association carry it? Sheikh Saqer said, “Right now, most of the triathlon events do not have a centralised standard that they follow. What BTA aims is to regulate the events to reach international standards. 40 | PowerUp | November 2016

This will ensure safety of the athletes and will provide a platform for development in sports for both organisers and participants. A wellstructured event helps boost the country’s economy.”

WHY RULES ARE IMPORTANT IN SPORTING EVENTS? This December will be Bahrain Triathlon Association’s third year of conception. The association was established for triathlon sport in the country. In addition to this Sheikh Saqer said, “BTA have signed

an agreement with the International Triathlon Union (ITU) that the association will be responsible in regulating triathlon events in Bahrain. Any triathlon events in the country have to be coursed through the Athletics Association.” “Creating events promotes local and international tourism in the country. However, the economy will be at a disadvantage if sporting events are unregulated. It gives a bad impression to the people and open doors for dispute,” he added. Unregulated events are bad for the sport because organisers won’t be able to

apply the actual rules and accountability is not there. According to Sheikh Saqer, “If there is an official body or committee the liability falls on them. When creating events, knowing that the ITU and the Asian Triathlon Confederation is monitoringus, we have do things at a certain level.” ITU rules are formed to provide an atmosphere for sportsmanship, equality and fair play; provides safety and protection to athletes; emphasise ingenuity and skill without unduly limiting the athlete’s freedom of action and penalise athletes who gain an unfair advantage.

FEEDBACK According to Moosa, the organisation of the triathlon was perfect. All of them worked hard for two weeks before the race to bring it to almost an international standard. BTA also tried doubling the number of volunteers to make sure that all areas are covered. They also brought technical officials with them which are approved by ITU to officiate in this race. The marshals were also doubled in number to ensure that the event was well-organised, structured, and controlled. In previous events the spectators were free to go near the field of play which can be unsafe or dangerous at times to both the athletes and spectators. With the implementation of the rules, the field of play is exclusively for the participants only. Also, designated transition areas were provided in the race. The transition was totally separated from the play area.

CHANGES IMPLEMENTED The Bahrain Triathlon Association has implemented the ITU rules in the recent Bahrain National Triathlon Championship last October. This time, they have strictly enforced the rules to test the viability of applying it in future triathlon events.

DESIGNATED AREAS

At the championship, the BTA has set up separate sections for each stage of the race. There is a dedicated place for bike racks for the elite athletes and the rest of the participants. There were allocated areafor the swimming as well as the cycling and running stages. This is the first time a triathlon event implemented a Bike

FUTURE OF TRIATHLON Buhassan and Saqer said, “We are looking forward for other races to be more regulated and controlled. We also try to find more open routes. At the same time, we are planning to bring more technical officials and organise an expo to make it a more family oriented event.” Buhassan envisions a duathlon championship in future. “The next step will be a GCC championship which has never happened yet in the GCC,” he added.

TECHNICAL OFFICIALS

Technical officials were present throughout the course. A team of students from Bahrain Polytechnic has recorded the event in video. According to Sheikh Saqer, “This video recording is essential in spotting mistakes and implementing penalties as a proof for the participants.”

PENALTIES

The penalties were applied as per ITU and time penalties were served in a designated Penalty Box at the transition areas. The technical committee served a time penalty of 15 seconds to some athletes for minor infringements. Some athletes were disqualified for cheating and swearing. The penalties

BTA President Sheikh Saqer bin Salman Al-Khalifa awarded the winners, and praised the wideranging participation in the championship. “This represents the beginning of many triathlon events lined up to promote this sport in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The championship was also an opportunity for our

team to prepare for future championships, and we are now certainly aware of the progress of our preparations,” ShaikhSaqer said. Shaikh Saqer also praised the presence of a mix of participants representing different nationalities, stating that this contributed in making the event a huge success.

There are rules to follow,we have to check even the type of wheels that they use as it has to follow UCI standard. Under UCI, wheels shall have at least 16 metal spokes. Some of the participantsdon’t have standard wheels. Time Trail bike in draft legal is not allowed. There a lot of things to consider in applying ITU rules.” Buhassan also explained how the cycling loops are more spectator-friendly now. Usually, there are four cycling loops but this time there were only three loops. Through this method, the coordination of the race can be better guaranteed.

RULES

We also sat down with Abbas Moosa Buhassan the Technical delegate of the national championship. According to him, this is the first time a triathlon event followed ITU rules. He said, “It is the first time we have separated elite categories for men and women and the age group. On previous triathlon events, it has been a common practice to start the race with all the age group at the same time.” When asked about the difficulties they faced in implementing the rules he said, “It was really hard to implement ITU rules as most participants are not yet familiar with the rules especially those who do not

KING & QUEEN OF KONA Defending the Ironman World Championship is notoriously difficult; in its storied history only four men and four women had accomplished the feat. Today, Daniela Ryf and Jan Frodeno claimed their place among those titans of the sport as the two took victory once again in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

W

hile Daniela and Jan were heavy favorites leading into the race, both were perceived as vulnerable since they had already done two iron-distance races this year and had not defended their Ironman 70.3 World Championship titles. Yet both were able to prove they are the world’s best on this single-day test of strength,

Ryf said, “I knew I could run okay and so far I just never had to really show it, or maybe sometimes I couldn’t show it... Today I felt really solid in the marathon and with about 4K to go my team said, ‘If you want, you can go’ and my coach was watching and he said, ‘go for it’ and that’s where I was like

‘OK I’m gonna try it.’ “The last 4K were amazing. The crowd was so incredible. They just push me so hard. It was not just a great win. It was a great experience and that’s what it’s all about in our sport - to make great experiences and it’s a day I will never forget.” Frodeno took his win in 8:06:30 with a 48:02 swim, 4:29:00 on the bike, and 2:45:34 on the run. He set the pace through most of the swim, stayed in the

front group on the bike, and trusted his legs would distance him from the field over the marathon. His fellow German Sebastian Kienle didn’t make it easy for him: the two men were off the bike within seconds of each other and ran the first half of the marathon together. Frodeno pulled away on the infamous climb on Palani Road, leaving Kienle in second to fend off the hard-charging Patrick Lange. Frodeno said, “I have to say Sebastian was pushing all the time and up Palani I was just trying to go at my own pace. He was stronger on the hills before so I was surprised he dropped back. I obviously tried not to get too excited which is a bit hard when you’re leading a world championship.” It still wasn’t easy pickings racing off the front; Frodeno dug in deep, grimacing through the final mile through town. He only started to celebrate with high fives from the crowd as he ran through Ali’i Drive to meet Ironman legends Mark Allen and

Dave Scott the finish line. “I can’t remember when I last suffered so much. Right now I’m just so happy to be here,” he said. “Thank you to all the locals for giving us your space, sharing your roads. Mahalo, much appreciated.” Fellow Bahrain Endurance teammate Ben Hoffman finished just outside the Top 3 after being in the mix all day. It took a record-breaking 2:39:45 marathon from Lange to bump him off the podium. However, as first American after a trio of Germans, Hoffman can once again lay claim to being the best in the USA since his 2014 runner-up finish. While Terenzo Bozzone called it an early day partway through the marathon, the rest of the Bahrain Endurance contingent finished safely. Jodie Swallow crossed the line 22nd among the pro women. James Cunnama finished in 26th and Brent McMahon in 30th (just in front of Ryf). David Plese ended up inside the Top 20 for the first time, improving on his past Kona performances.

“DON’T DOUBT JUST DO Face your fears for your best triathlon performance.

L

ast month at the Ironman World Championships, Bahrain Endurance 13 team member Daniela Ryf delivered a crushing performance, beating her competitors by over twenty minutes and showing the world what she is capable of. As observers, we might be tempted to think that Daniela is free of self doubt and has confidence that far exceeds that of us mere mortals. We might think that, but we would be wrong. Crossing the finish line, Daniela was clearly elated, even surprised, by her own performance. At the 70.3 World Championships just 5 weeks before, Daniela finished 5th and this left her with doubts about her fitness and her ability to win. After the race she said: “To be honest I was doubting, not so sure where my bike form was after Mooloolaba and this race shows don’t doubt. Just do.” Everyone has doubts about their performance going into an important race, even World Champions. How we deal with these doubts can make or break the outcome of the race. In twelve years of racing as a professional triathlete, I have had every experience from winning Ironman to

44 | PowerUp | November 2016

dropping out. Through these experiences, I have come to the conclusion that when it comes to long distance triathlon, it’s all about how well we overcome obstacles. Sometimes, in our culture of “positive thinking” we forget to deal with our real fears. The first step is to take a good honest look at your fears and face them straight on.

Maybe you had nutrition problems and had a stitch at your last race. Imagine yourself getting a stitch and, instead of panicking, walking calmly for a few steps. Try a sip of water or coke (one of these two usually works for stitch) and then jogging again. If you are nervous about the swim, imagine yourself

“To be honest I was doubting, not so sure where my bike form was after Mooloolaba and this race shows don’t doubt. Just do.” What are the things you are nervous about for race day? Some people worry about not making the distance or having stomach troubles or mechanical issues. Some people are nervous about safety in the water or on the bike. Whatever it is, give it a name, and take a good hard look at it. After that, run through your list of “worst case scenarios” so that you can find solutions to potential problems before they arise. For example, if your fear is a flat tire on the bike, imagine exactly that happening. Imagine yourself pulling over calmly and fixing it. If you don’t know how to fix a flat, practice at home. This way, your fear loses its power.

having a panic attack and then breathing deeply to get it under control and then imagine yourself swimming again. Imagine every possible bad situation and then imagine every possible solution. This process will make you mentally bomb proof. In triathlon, problem solving is part of the game. The challenge of racing is the very reason we love the sport. If you’ve been racing for awhile, think back to your proudest moment. Invariably, our proudest races are those in which we overcame obstacles and prevailed. There is nothing that can stop you from making yourself proud on race day

by dealing with challenges as they present themselves. Looking back on my own career, one of my proudest races was Ironman Switzerland 2013. During the race, an official sent myself and two other cyclist off course. We descended down a Swiss mountain and another competitor who descended with me crashed into a stream. I stopped to help him (he was ok!), climbed back up onto the course and carried on in the right direction, adding at least twenty minutes to my time. It was a brutally hot day and when I got to transition I was tempted to stop, but I didn’t. I grabbed my transition bag and started running. I finished in 8th place (one of my worst ever) but the race still stands out as one of my proudest moments. And therein lies the final truth - things always look different at the finish line. In Ironman racing there is (almost) no such thing as a perfect race. There are only imperfect races and how we handle them. One thing you can be sure of, those who have the best races are the ones who deal with challenges quickly and with a positive state of mind. Be that person, and the rest will go swimmingly.

FOOTBALL AND GOLF IN ONE GAME Last month, PowerUp has been invited to play a combination of football and golf game called footgolf at the Royal Golf Club. WHAT IS GOLF AND HOW IS FOOTGOLF DIFFERENT TO IT?

Let’s start by defining and identifying some of the golf jargons.

GOLF

Golf is a precision club and ball sport in which competing players or golfers use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course using as few strokes as possible.

18 HOLES

The standard round of golf has 18 holes. Each hole has a teeing ground that is set off by two markers showing the bounds of the legal tee (starting) area, fairway, rough, other hazards (like sand bunkers or lakes), and the putting green with the pin (normally a flag stick) and cup. Each hole on a course, and indeed among virtually all courses, is unique in its specific layout and arrangement. 46 | PowerUp | November 2016

PAR

A hole is classified by its par, meaning the number of strokes a skilled golfer should require to complete play of the hole. A typical par-3 hole is around 150 yards (137 m) in length, with a par-4 hole ranging between 251 and 475 yards (225–434 m), and a par-5 hole being longer than 475 yards (435 m).

HANDICAP

A handicap is a numerical measure of an amateur golfer’s ability to play golf over the course of 18 holes. A player’s handicap generally represents the number of strokes above par that the player will make over the course of an above-average round of golf. The better the player the lower their handicap is. Golfer with a handicap of 0 or less is often called a scratch golfer, and would typically score or beat the course par on a round of play.

FOOTGOLF

FootGolf copies golf rules but foot and a regular football shall be used instead of golf clubs and a golf ball. FootGolf is usually played on the same type courses, having the same par system, though length of holes much shorter and the cups are much wider.

WHAT IS THE FLOW AND ETIQUETTE OF PLAY?

Most of the golf courses follow their tee time schedule. A tee time is a reservation at a golf course to begin your round of golf at a specified time. If your tee time is 10:10, then at 10:10 you (or someone within your group) should be hitting the first tee shot of your round. Tee times are spaced at regular intervals - typically 10 minutes apart so that groups of golfers are beginning their rounds in an organized fashion. A game of golf is usually

played in groups up to 4 players. 3-4 players are the most convenient number for a group to keep the right pace of play. Pace of play is a period of time sufficient for players to finish a hole or a round of golf. For example, 4 hours 25 minutes is a good pace to finish a round at The Royal Golf Club Championship Course. 18 holes of FootGolf at the same facility require an average of 2 hours to finish. Find your partners for the game and arrive on the starting box several minutes prior your tee time. On the teeing ground, you must place your ball between the tee markers, either even with them or up to two club-lengths behind them. Never in front of them. Tee markers are usually small, colored cones or stones or some other similar indicator. There are usually 3 to 5 tee boxes on most golf courses. It is done to make the www.powerup-mag.com

FOOTGOLF

FOOTGOLF AT THE ROYAL GOLF CLUB game pleasant for golfers of different skill levels. The closer tee box to the cup the easier round. The player who has “honors” plays first from the teeing ground. On the first tee, this can be decided randomly (draw straws, play paper-rock-scissors, etc). On ensuing tees, the player with the best score on the preceding hole goes first, the second-best score goes second, and so on. Once first shots are played the player who is farthest from the hole always plays first, from any position on the golf course other than the tee box. The exception is when all members of the group have agreed to play “ready golf,” meaning hit-when-ready. Ready golf can be played when a group is trying to speed up the round and lost the group ahead in view. Safety requirement must be followed. One of the most fundamental principles of golf - an idea that much of the Rules of Golf is built around - is “play it as it lies.” What that means is pretty simple - don’t move or touch the ball! Where it comes to rest, whatever state it is in, you most likely have to play it as is.

ONE EXCEPTION THAT IS ALWAYS IN PLACE

FOOTGOLF AT THE ROYAL GOLF CLUB FootGolf is limited to Sundays evenings only. Tee-times are from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. Two hours is sufficient time to finish 18 holes.

@powerupmag

You are allowed to pick up and clean the ball when it’s on the putting green. But mark it first with a marker or a coin. While playing FootGolf you may mark the spot and lift the ball when it may obstruct the other player’s kick or ball in any way.

SLOW PLAY

Slow play has always been an issue on golf courses, and it’s even more important as a beginner to be aware of your pace of play. You don’t want to keep golfers behind you waiting, just as you probably don’t want to be kept waiting yourself by slow groups ahead. Always be prepared to play when it is your turn to hit. Don’t wait until it is your turn to decide which club to use, or to determine the line of a putt; use the time while others are hitting to make those decisions, so that when it’s your turn you can step right up and play. If your group is slower than the group behind yours - if your group is holding up another group - it’s good etiquette to allow the faster group to play through. There is a responsibility on players, administrators and green keeping staff to ensure that golf is played at a good pace and at a pace that is appropriate for the course being played.

All said above is relevant to FootGolf. The same rules and principles are to be applied. But here are some additions and local rules for FootGolf at The Royal Golf Club. You may always find the rules on the back side of your Foot¬Golf scorecard. Wear appropriate clothing suitable for the surroundings as well as indoor soccer shoes or sneakers. Cleats or Studs are not allowed due to the possible damage to the course. For the same reason no play is allowed on golf greens.

1

The ball must be played in a single movement. You are not allowed to push the ball with the top of your foot. Your foot should be set separate from the ball, clearly behind, before each kick.

2

Wait to play until the ball has completely come to rest. (It is not legal to stop the ball from rolling with the wind).

3

Play the ball from where it lies. You are not allowed to move the ball or remove jammed objects. Exception: You may mark the spot and lift the ball when it may obstruct the other player’s kick or ball in any way.

4

5

The player farthest from the hole is the first to kick the ball and

order of play is established based on the lowest score of the previous hole. Just in time for the Bahrain Motorsport Festival, here’s a comprehensive guide about the World Endurance Championship

T

he FIA World Endurance Championship has matured and established itself as one of the world’s most revered and respected motor sport series. Here’s a guide to WEC and classes you can take. 2016 has been another spectacular season of racing, with 32 entries across the four categories of competition, LMP1, LMP2, LMGTE Pro and LMGTE Am, plus a calendar which for the first time featuring nine races held in Europe, Latin and North America, Asia and the Middle East. Since 2012, the WEC has featured manufacturer teams from current World Champions Porsche, Audi, Toyota, Ferrari, Aston Martin

52 | PowerUp | November 2016

and in 2016, welcomed Ford to the WEC family. The combination of committed major automotive manufacturers and some of the finest drivers anywhere in the sport ensure that spectators are privileged to be watching some of the highest level endurance racing of all time. Add to this the many privateer teams battling it out across the classes, plus evocative and storied locations like Bahrain, Silverstone, SpaFrancorchamps, Nürburgring, Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez and of course the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans. FIA WEC provides two classes for those who wants to enter the world of endurance motorsport racing.

LE MANS PROTOTYPES

Le Mans Prototypes are either open or closed cockpit cars with no production minimum required. Generally produced specially for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but also for FIA WEC Endurance Championship / ELMS / IMSA races, these cars are developed exclusively for on-track competitions, fulfilling the requirements of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest’s technical regulations. Because of their superior performances and level of technological development, they have a star status within Endurance Racing.

PROTOTYPES ARE DIVIDED INTO TWO CATEGORIES:

LMP1 - for Manufacturers LMP2 - for teams independent of manufacturers and/or engine suppliers

“LE MANS” PROTOTYPE 1 CATEGORY INCLUDES:

“LE MANS” PROTOTYPE 1 Hybrid: with Energy Recovery System (ERS). “LE MANS” PROTOTYPE 1 : with no Energy Recovery System (ERS) reserved only for privateers.

The LMP1 Private Teams category is reserved exclusively for independent private teams. A team that is independent of a manufacturer means a team that does not benefit from any support from a manufacturer other than for the single supply of engines, services relating to these engines or commercial support. Any support from a manufacturer relating to the chassis or to chassis systems is prohibited. It is understood that traction control is considered as a chassis system. www.powerup-mag.com

FITNESS TIPS

MOTOR MUSCLE Motor racing is a seated sport, so it might come as a surprise to you that the driver’s core is challenged during a race.

F

or general motor racing fitness, a combination of low-intensity, aerobic cardio exercise as well as shorter, high-intensity, anaerobic training needs to be included in the program. Targeting the specific muscle groups that are challenged during a race will help, but focus should be on the larger muscle groups, as well as the core. Try the following exercises, in a circuit. 10-12 repetitions of each, 3 times.

FLOOR BRIDGE

Bring your feet close to your bottom, hip width apart, and keep your knees directly above your ankles. Squeeze your bottom and lift it off the floor until your knees, hips and shoulders form a straight line. Hold the position for one second, then lower your spine one vertebrae at a time onto the floor.

CHARLOTTE ANDERSON Health & Wellness Practitioner at HV Holistic Health & Corrective Training

FLOOR COBRA

Lie face down on the floor, with your forehead resting on the back of your hands. Keeping your neck in line with your spine, lift your chest and legs off the floor. You will need to contract your lower back and bottom muscles. Hold for one second, and slowly return to the floor.

STABILITY BALL PULL-INS

Place your hands on the floor and your feet on a stability ball, and adopt a plank position. Using your abdominal muscles, pull your feet towards your hands. Lift your hips towards the ceiling, and allow your knees to bend. Hold for one second. Return the legs out into a straight plank position while keeping your core engaged.

TIPS FROM HEAVENLY SPA We always advise the guests not to have massage right away to let the skin absorb the oil and then they can go to the sauna and steam. Arrive to the spa at least 30 minutes so they can enjoy the facilities like the sauna, steam and Jacuzzi. Being in a hot environment helps makes the blood circulate in your body a lot in relaxing the muscles during the treatment. It makes you feel which part of the body you have to focus more.

SPORTS MASSAGE Relax and Rejuvenate Sports massage therapy is geared not only toward athletes of every kind but also for regular people who trains and exercises.

A

fter a tough race or sporting activity, athletes are looking for a way to recover, relax and relieve muscle tensions / stress. What best way to relax than having a massage? PowerUp met with Westin’s Director of Spa and Recreation Department, Ahmed El Sandoby to give us some tips and benefits of sports massage. According to the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA), massage acts to improve performance, reduce pain, prevent injury, encourage focus and shorten recovery time. It basically involves two types

60 | PowerUp | November 2016

of responses: a mechanical response as a result of the pressure and movement and a reflex response where the nerves respond to the stimulation of a massage.

It’s good for soft tissues injuries but if someone has operations, sports massage is not advisable. Most of my clientele are either athletes or navy, they work out a lot and

Sports massage is not only for athletes, it is for everyone who does a lot of physical activities from running, cycling, jogging to a lot more. MASSAGE FREQUENCY

When asked how frequent a person has to have a massage Ahmed explained, “It is advisable to have a massage once a week or twice every two weeks and to include it in your monthly regime.

do a lot of physical exercises. It’s good to have a massage for an hour to 90 minutes. Longer massage yields better results. Massage varies from soft to hard and we do offer a variety aside from sports massage.”

The Westin concepts are about be well, play well and eat well. Sports massage fits fully into the ‘be well’ concept as it focuses on your wellbeing in sports rehabilitation. Sports massage is not only for athletes, it is for everyone who does a lot of physical activities from running, cycling, jogging to a lot more.

SPORTS MASSAGE AND OTHER TYPE OF MASSAGE

The particulars of the sports massage technique are specific to the athlete’s sport of choice. However, you don’t have to be an athlete

to get a sports massage. It is also advisable to those who are active and are experiencing muscle pains. It focuses on areas of the body that are overused and stressed from repetitive and often aggressive movements. Sports massage emphasizes prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons. It promotes flexibility, reduces fatigue, improves endurance, helps prevent injuries and prepares their body and mind for optimal performance. The good thing about sports massage is, if you don’t have symmetry in your muscle it gives you symmetry.

It incorporates stretching and focuses more on areas that have issues. According to Ahmed before they advised any treatment or types of massage, “As a standard, we always ask our customers about the areas of concern so we can focus on those particular areas. The major areas of concern we received are the shoulder blades, the lower back, the hips and the legs. Focus areas depends on what you do, for example, for a cyclist the main focus areas is their hamstring, the lower part of the calves including their shoulder blades. Heavy lifters are most likely to

complain of lower back pain. It depends on what kind of sports you do. The massage therapist will spend more time in that particular area.” Whether you engage in different sporting activities or just have an active lifestyle, sports massage can help you ease any of your physical stress. Sports massage is not only for managing pain and treating muscle injuries but also for relaxation. For more information: Heavenly Spa by Westin Tel. DR. SAMER J. BASHIR Consultant of Retinal Surgery and Laser Gulf Diabetes Specialist Center

EYE DRYNESS

More and more people are complaining about this elusive and ill-defined nuisance. Dr Bashir explains the causes of dry eye syndrome and the variety of treatment that are available.

E

ye dryness or medically known as “Ocular Xerosis” means insufficient tears for the eyes’

needs. Basically, the stream of tears is secreted from behind the bony orbit in two forms. The first form is slow and steady (basic) secretion which is thickand loaded with essential elements for a healthy eye. The second mode is a rapid thin secretion that is useful when a foreign body or irritant reaches the eye or when we simply cry. This phenomenon is confusing because some symptoms of eye dryness include extra tears. However, eye dryness is not connected to low water intake which means extra glasses of water won’t correct it. Diabetics are chronically dehydrated and tend to have casual dryness as well. Eye dryness is mostly caused by weather changes. This explains the widespread 62 | PowerUp | November 2016

distribution of this condition across all ages. The sudden transition from any air conditioned area to fresh air which may be loaded with dust is beyond the eyes’ ability to adapt. For example, the rapid shift from a very hot and humid environment of the car’s interior to a very cold and dry atmosphere in minutes when repeated several times a day is defiantly a causing factor. Additionally, the evaporation of tears occurs in seconds when we direct the vents straight to our faces to obtain an immediate cooling. The second most common reason is the widespread and chronic use of technological devices ranging from phones and tablets to PCs and TVs. These gadgets all force the brain to switch off blinking in order to keep the information stream going without interruptions, causing dryness in few hours of use. Kids are severely affected due to long hours of

unmonitored use. However, simply closing your eyes for several minutes every half an hour does wonders. Switching from one application on your smartphone to another in the same phone is not considered a break! Lid infections which prevail in elderly population are the third most common reason for eye dryness. This infection leads to friction which results to dryness and will soon cause another friction. This vicious circle can be managed through a root treatment of the lid’s infection. It’s also worth noting that some drugs like antihistamines used in nasal allergy, Roaccutane (Accutane) used to treat chronic facial acne, oral contraceptives, lack of good night sleep andsome types of makeup can cause temporary dryness, which disappear once the root cause is dealt with. Medical treatment is done in a step like fashion. Artificial

tears are basically viscous water in many forms, sizes and formulations that help ease the symptoms. Your doctor may be able to help with selectingor even making one especially for you. The doctor can also close or plug the tears’ drainage ducts to keep your hard earned tears longer in youreyes. In addition to these, it is important to know that several eye drops which are meant to whiten or cleanse the eyes can cause chronic dryness, and the use of any formulation including herbal ones is not advised unless you were specifically told to do so. Also not all fat is created equal. If you tend to carry more fat around the abdomen 64 | PowerUp | November 2016

then you are increasing your risks because fat surrounding the organs in the abdomen and liver are closely linked to insulin resistance and hence diabetes. Obesity indeed is

Take care of your protein intake with eggs, milk, cheese and unsweetened yogurt. Deep fried, packaged, canned and fast foods are a definite no. White breads and sugary cereals should also be avoided. It is also a myth that diabetics must steer clear of carbs. The type of carbohydrates you eat as well as serving size should be kept a check on. Focus on whole grain carbs instead of starchy carbs since they’re high in fibre and digested slowly, keeping blood sugar levels more even. Brown rice, sweet potatoes, steel cut or rolled oats, leafy vegetables and low sugar bran flakes are excellent

TH BEAT DIABETES WALK IN BAHRAIN

Beating diabetes one step at a time.

iabetes is one of the major diseases in the Middle East and Bahrain has witnessed an increase in deaths in the past few years. There were about 154,300 cases of diabetes in Bahrain in 2015 according to the International Diabetes Federation. In line with this, various groups and organizations have created campaigns on awareness, care and prevention of Diabetes for the public. The Beat Diabetes walk is one of the many initiatives held across the GCC. In 2015, the walk saw the unprecedented participation of more than 40,000 participants across these

countries. Over 4,000 people in Bahrain alone took pledge to Beat Diabetes by joining the walk. As a part of Al Rashid Group’s corporate social responsibility, this leading retail and hospitality conglomerate has been hosting the Beat Diabetes Walk annually for eight years in a row. The walk will be held this year again in November at Dohat Arad Park, Bahrain. The Beat Diabetes Walk will span approximately 3 kilometres. Announcing the walk VikasAttri, Chief Operating Officer Al Rashid Group Bahrain said, “The walk is a very important annual event for us, it brings the community together and raises awareness about a condition that is steadily growing in prevalence in the region. More than half the people living with the condition are not aware that they have it, and it is essential that we come together

and raise awareness about diabetes. Like every year, we hope to see the community join us and make this event a success” Registrations for the annual Beat Diabetes Walk in the Bahrain can be completed online at www.beatdiabetes. me from 23rd October to 11November 2016 or on the day of the walk at the venue. 387 PEOPLE HAVE

WORLDWIDE

DIABETES 101

8.3%

Worldwide, more than 387 million people have diabetes – 8.3% of the adult population and, by 2035, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimates that more than 592million people will have the disease.

D

iabetes is a condition where the pancreas fails to produce insulin at all or not produce enough insulin to keep blood glucose under control. When food is digested and enters the bloodstream, insulin works by moving glucose out of the bloodand into cells, where it is used as an energy resource. Diabetes occurs when there is insulin resistance and/or deficiency and the body is unable to move glucose into cells.

TYPES OF DIABETES

There are three kinds of diabetes:

68 | PowerUp | November 2016

TYPE 1 DIABETES

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body’s own immune system kills the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Blood glucose levels must be regulated with insulin treatment in the form of injectable insulin. If too much insulin is injected and the level of blood glucose falls too low, hypoglycaemia can result leading to unconsciousness. If blood glucose levels remains too high (hyperglycaemia), the body breaks down fat reserves instead of glucose as an energy source, giving rise to the release of toxic ketones (ketoacidosis), which

ADULT POPULATION

can lead to coma and death. At present, there is no way to prevent type 1 diabetes, and people diagnosed with it must receive insulin treatment for life and take insulin injections on a daily basis.

TYPE 2 DIABETES

Type 2 diabetes is much more common and accounts for 85–95% of people with diabetes, and is increasing in every country. In type 2 diabetes, blood glucose starts to rise as the number of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas gradually declines over time due to ageing, lack of exercise and increasing amounts of abdominal fat. This can cause insulin resistance,

where the body produces insulin but the tissue and cells do not respond fully.

GESTATIONAL DIABETES

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is characterised by high blood glucose levels during pregnancy in women who have not had diabetes previously. During pregnancy, the placenta produces hormones that alter the mother’s metabolism to ensure that the developing baby receives enough energy. Untreated GDM can lead to complications in the baby such as large size at birth (macrosomia), birth trauma, hypoglycaemia and jaundice.

dosing when needed. This flexibility could help improve the lives of patients, as poor insulin adherence contributes to poor glycaemic control.” said Dr. Feryal Al Saber Consultant physician and endocrinologist head of the endocrine unit in the royal medical services at the Bahrain Defense Force Hospital in Bahrain. “Maintaining good blood glucose control with insulin treatment can be challenging for healthcare professionals and patients due to concerns over hypoglycaemia and night time hypoglycaemia in particular. Tresiba has shown less risk of nocturnal hypoglycaemia than the most widely used basal insulin,” said Vikrant Shrotriya, VP Gulf, Novo Nordisk.

The progression to diabetes-related complications can be slowed down or even avoided altogether by two forms of preventive measures: lifestyle change and medical intervention.Strong scientific evidence from studies in many countries shows that the course of type 2 diabetes and its complications can be, to some extent, controlled. SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES

Diabetes can cause symptoms such as: Excessive thirst Frequent urination Fatigue Blurred vision Weight loss

For type 1 diabetes the symptoms are often severe or distinct, whereas for type 2 diabetes symptoms can be minor or very subtle. Due to this, many people with type 2 diabetes remain undiagnosed

for up to 10-14 years.

RISK FACTORS

Factors contributing to the increased prevalence of diabetes include: Ageing population caused by longer overall life expectancies: Over the last 50 years, medical advancements mean that life expectancy in Europe has increased while birth rates have declined. Urbanisation and lifestyle changes leading to an increase in obesity. This urbanisation process has a significant impact on the prevalence of type 2 diabetes. Globally, those who live in cities are two to five times more likely to have diabetes. Risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes include: Evidence of impaired glucose tolerance Physical inactivity Being overweight: 85% of children diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese. TECH GADGETS

NEW FITNESS AND ADVENTURE BUDDIES From wearable technology to action cameras, these gadgets are changing the game for players, coaches, and sports fanatics alike. Check out this month’s top picks!

APPLE WATCH SERIES 2

ADIDAS MICOACH SMART BALL

GOPRO HERO 5 BLACK

Apple had just recently launched its second generation smart watch. This smart watch carries out some of Apple’s trademark colors: silver, gold, rose gold and space grey. Compared to the earlier version of Apple watch, the Series 2 focused more on fitness by adding a built-in GPS so you can record precise distance, speed, and pace while walking, running or cycling. There has been some changes in the display which made it two times brighter than its predecessor. Also, the new Apple watch is now water resistant which means you can now track laps while swimming in the pool or open water. Apple surely is upping the game for sports watch owners.

The Adidas Micoach Smart Ball is not just your ordinary ball. It helps you improve your soccer skills through its integrated sensor inside that detects speed, spin, strike and flight path data and instantly relays kick data to the MiCoach app on your smart phone. The information gathered will be sent via Bluetooth to the MiCoach Smart Ball app on your device. The app provides instant feedback on the analysis of your performance. What’s more fascinating is the ball’s feel and reaction is similar to a normal ball. This app-enabled ball helps and guides you to improve your ball-mastery and soccer kicking technique while training.

You can take your adventures to another level with the GoPro Hero 5. It is now waterproof up to 10 meters (33 feet) without a housing. This is an upside compared to other action cameras. GoPro’s past cameras were only water resistant when it’s in its polycarbonate housing but Hero 5 may be the best one yet. It also has a 4k video, simple one-button control, and voice control which makes it easier to use. The GoPro Hero 5 Black added some of the muchneeded features from its predecessors. If you are looking for a convenient and quality sports camera, GoPro Hero 5 Black is a good investment.
