YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
DEAR FRIENDS Did you know the YMCA invented the games of basketball and volleyball? The Y, in its rich 170 history has offered society many firsts, including these two very popular sports. But, these examples are just a small fraction of what our organization represents. Sure we are recognized for aquatics, being the leader in the country teaching young people water safety skills. People know us for health and fitness, pioneering this industry over 100 years ago. The Y is even known as the grandfather of Bodybuilding, a multi-billion industry, beginning with what was called “Muscular Christianity”. The list goes on and on. We are proud of the rich history and impact this organization has had on local communities all across the country.
Unfortunately, many do not understand what is at the core of our mission. It is to serve community, plain and simple. It is to address the changing needs of our community and serve all people, regardless of background, financial status, ethnicity or creed. We exist to lessen the burden of government. We serve teens, impacting and changing lives. We are in schools across the region serving the needs of working parents. We serve the social, spiritual and physical health of thousands of older adults, helping to provide the means to a productive life in retirement years. The Y helps to make life easier for military families through our robust and growing Military Outreach programs. As we say, the Y is “So Much More™”. YMCA Before and After School, with a childhood enrichment emphasis, added seven new sites with the 2013 – 2014 school year, serving 100 additional children daily, including a new collaboration with the Westside Community Center. The Before and After School Program also adopted and successfully implemented the Healthy Eating Physical Activity (HEPA) standards in an effort to combat childhood obesity. The Y is now serving the needs of 18 elementary schools across our region with anticipated growth in the coming year. Our Summer Day Camp Program continues to see an increase in participation, reaching capacity at nearly all 8 camp locations, driving the need for additional sites in 2015. Notably, hundreds of day campers read 414,060 minutes directly addressing the critical nature of the achievement gap and summer learning loss. Youth have a variety of sports to choose from and there is no better way to start and develop the whole person through sports than with YMCA Youth Sports. 10,712 young athletes participated in clinics, leagues and sports camps to not only develop skills in sport, but to also
2
build character and leadership. In the Fall, we launched our first competitive basketball league for grades 5 – 8, which was well received by players, parents and coaches. Learning to swim and understanding critical water safety skills are important parts of growing up. The Y is leading the way, teaching 11,698 youth to swim last year. Many of these young swimmers enhanced their strokes through swim lessons and later became members of the Y swim team with 2,048 fellow swimmers. Healthy living is part of the core of the Y’s mission. The Y meets people where they are on their wellness journey and assists individuals and families in developing plans to make sustainable lifestyle changes and enhancements. In October, the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region launched “LIVESTRONG®” a national program focused on cancer survivorship aimed at the reclamation of health and offering a vehicle of support with others traveling a similar journey. Twelve amazing people were part of our first program that yielded results even we did not think possible. This program will be replicated at most centers throughout our organization in 2015. A dedicated focus on partnership and collaboration brought new opportunities in 2014, including the Tri Lakes Health Pavilion which officially opened in January 2015. This partnership with the healthcare industry addresses health needs in specific areas within the greater region through an innovative, sustainable platform focused on prevention before intervention. There will be an enhanced focus on this delivery model throughout our organization moving forward. Thank you for allowing us to share just a few highlights from our year. We hope you will travel through our timeline in this annual report and reflect on a year that brought impact to many of our friends and neighbors.

LOVING
MEMORYof
If you are new to the Y or have been around for a while, we all have a story of someone who has touched our lives in some special way. A way that can be described as life changing. These people come and go out of our lives as we journey through our careers, but some, because of their love for what they do, their love for the Y and its values, their love for kids and people...they stick with us forever. These people always put others first and are doing what they love to do. They are an inspiration, a role model, and simply a friend. For hundreds of children and Y staff - both camp and the branches - TJ Bolinger is this person. TJ was Camp Shady Brook’s Master of Fun and Games Summer 2014. And boy did he deliver. TJ touched so many lives through his own values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. TJ is genuine, and loved what he did for people. On August 18, 2014 TJ Bolinger passed away while attending college in Boulder, CO. TJ will forever be in our hearts and our minds and his memory will be honored with the TJ Bolinger “Kids to Camp” Scholarship to help ensure every kid has a chance to be part of the fun. For questions on the TJ Bolinger Scholarship please contact Sonny Adkins at 719.329.7227 or sadkins@ppymca.org

ANGEL AWARD Rachel Richardson
This award is given to a YMCA staff person exemplifying values of the YMCA in every day work and making an extraordinary impact in the life of a member of our community. Rachel Richardson began as a membership consultant at the Garden Ranch Y in May 2014, where she spends her days welcoming YMCA members. Prior to coming to Colorado Springs, Rachel worked for the YMCA of Greater Houston and was a “Y kid” growing up. Rachel truly exemplifies the YMCA commitment to service for all. “But to the lady at the YMCA with a smile that can change the world...Thank you! Thank you for being selfless and kind and meeting the needs of others who can’t meet their own. My life is forever changed.” - Signed a man with hope 19
J.H. WOODGATE AWARD TED RINEBARGER
Ted and his wife Judy moved to Colorado Springs after retiring from the United States Air Force as a Brigadier General. He began his service with the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region as a volunteer, assisting with a study on the YMCA and USO. Soon after the study was completed, Ted was hired as the Director of the YMCA USO Branch where he worked closely with YMCA leadership to establish the Y as an official Armed Services YMCA affiliate. He then played a key role in the capital campaign with staff and volunteers as the Project Manager to build what we now know as the Southeast Armed Services YMCA, where he eventually served on staff as Executive Director. It was during this time that Ted worked with leadership of Gazette to have the Armed Services YMCA included as a local recipient of Empty Stocking Funds which the Y still receives today. Ted later took a new role as Endowment Development Director for the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region where he established the Y’s Endowment Development Committee and Summit Society. Prior to going back into retirement, Ted served as the Project Manager for the new Tri-Lakes YMCA and is a founding member of the YMCA Foundation of the Pikes Peak Region. Ted had many opportunities and he chose to put his passion, energy and expertise into helping military and civilian individuals and families gain access to YMCA programs and services and provide a foundation of service through the Y for years to come.

OUR MISSION To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
OUR CAUSE At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. That’s why we focus our work in three areas: youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
