Why is it important for my child to attend summer programming? Studies show that most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in math computation skills over the summer months. Low -income students also lose more than two months of reading achievement (Cooper, 1996).

Camp Shady Brook Volunteer Experience 2014

Short Story By Sierra Barrow I walk tiredly into the kitchen of my new house, I yawn and stretch my arms then look around. I grab a bowl, poor cereal and milk in it. As I eat my sister comes in the room cheery as always. I often wonder how she’s always happy even in the mornings when I can barely open my eyes. “Hey good morning” she says cheery . “Hi Rachel it is too early,” I say about ready to fall asleep on the table. “Oh you don’t mean that,” she says “anyways I am going to the mall today, think you can handle staying here alone?” I look at her about ready to be sarcastic but decided against it, “I am sure I can, being 15 and

all”. “Ok great, mom and dad aren’t here, you should know that,” she said. “Actually I did not know, tell me again where they are.” “They went on vacation! Silly.” She says grabbing her keys and her purse the she headed out the door. Before she leaves she looks at me and smiles. “Oh and you can’t stay in your pajamas all day we have somewhere to be today” she says closing the door. “ugh,” I think and headed up to my room to get dressed. “Why do I have to go somewhere today it’s meh lazy day,” I think aloud. I put on a lime green tank top and black skinny jeans. I brush my hair, jump on my bed, grab my iPod and listen to music. It was very peaceful until I heard a loud crashing sound downstairs. I jump out

of bed and pull out my headphones. I try to stay calm, although I am silently freaking out. “Ok calm down, maybe it was just your mind playing tricks on you.” Then another loud crash came from downstairs. “Ok maybe less imaginary than I thought.” I slowly make my way downstairs taking deep breaths. I reach the end, I look around the wall and I see someone. A boy, “crap” I think, “what do I do now!” I take another look at the boy. He had brown hair and was wearing a blue shirt and jeans. I try to calm down, my breathing deepened, I was terrified. I had no clue what to do, call 911 but my phone was upstairs. I take the first step up the stairs but it made a loud squeak. I slowly turn around and I am facing the boy who is staring right at me.
