FAT TUESDAY MARDI GRAS CONCERT with Dixieland Express

Dixieland music is a style of jazz, often ascribed to jazz pioneers in New Orleans, but also descriptive of styles honed by slightly later Chicago-area musicians. The term also refers to the traditional jazz that underwent a popular revival during the 1940s and continued to be played into the 21st century. Dixieland Express is a popular picnic band favorite, but today these seven talented musicians will perform a Dixieland Mardi Gras-style concert.

Plain Dress in the Docket: Lillian Risser, the Pennsylvania Garb Law and the Free Exercise of Religion, 1908-1910

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 1, 2 P.M.

In 1895, Pennsylvania passed the so-called Garb Law prohibiting public school teachers from wearing religiously distinctive clothing in the classroom. Although the law was aimed at Catholic nuns in western Pennsylvania, it was first enforced in Lancaster County where it was used against “plain” female school teachers of the Mennonite and Brethren faiths. This illustrated presentation will tell the story of Lillian H. Risser, an early Elizabethtown College alumna, who was teaching in Mount Joy Township just east of Elizabethtown when she ended up in court. Hear the story’s twists, turns and unexpected outcomes. Since the law remains on the books today, it raises contemporary questions about freedom of expression. Presented by Steve Nolt, director, Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies, Elizabethtown College. Sponsored by the Life Long Discovery Fund.

DeMolay Movie Matinee: “1776”

SATURDAY, FEB. 4, 1 – 3:30 P.M.

Join the young men from DeMolay for the showing of the movie “1776.” The nation’s fathers harmonize their way through the founding of America in this musical adapted from a popular Broadway show. Benjamin Franklin (Howard da Silva) and John Adams (William Daniels) charge Thomas Jefferson (Ken Howard) with the work of writing a statement announcing the new country’s emancipation from British rule. Refreshments to follow in the Lodge Multipurpose Room.

What if there was a cable channel that demonstrated how to prepare dishes of the Victorian working class or to prepare piroshki in Imperial Russia? This class will walk through time and space to demonstrate actual recipes using original ingredients and preparation techniques without modern shortcuts. Part 2 includes foods from West Africa, Brazil and the Chinese Qing Dynasty. There is even a lecture on “can opener cooking” from the 1950s. The Islamic Golden Age lasted from about 750 until about 1250. Advances inside the Islamic civilization during this time are comparable to those of Ancient Greece and the European Renaissance. It was a time where a mixture of cultures worked together to produce advances in music, literature, engineering, medicine, astronomy and mathematics. The course is not focused on the Islamic religion but is about the history and achievements of a civilization that had Islam as the state religion. Olga Vinokur, Pianist presents “The Art of Etude”

Olga Vinokur will perform pieces by Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, Gould and more. She is an acclaimed pianist and a dynamic performer on the classical and contemporary music scene with a reputation for strength and consistency in her artistry. She has appeared in the United States and internationally as a recitalist with orchestra and chamber musicians in major venues including Carnegie Hall, Shangai Prague, King’s Place in London and many others. She pursued her Master and Doctor of Musical Art degrees at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, where she resides. Singer/songwriter/ motivational speaker KJ Reimensnyder-Wagner brings her music and positive energy back to Masonic Village. She is joined this evening by her friend Tim Latshaw, also an accomplished and seasoned musician and vocalist. This duo wowed our audience last February, so we have invited them back this year for more of their music camaraderie.

Maria Damore, vocalist, accompanied by Marty Mellinger, pianist, will perform an afternoon of beautiful love songs. Maria, a professional vocalist from Berks County, is noted for her strong, clear vocals, and versatility in covering various musical styles. She has been featured in Classical Singer magazine, discussing her work in the original children’s jazz-opera, The Bear Prince, and her Greek folk music duo “Stavros & Maria.” Pianist, Marty Mellinger is the founder and owner of Cross Keys Recording Studio. He has performed with Rita Coolidge, the Sammy Kaye Orchestra, Mary Wilson, Ray Parker, Jr., and tours internationally and throughout the United Sates.

Classes for the Curious: Lessons from Engineering Failures

Classes for the Curious listens to and discusses one lecture in a DVD series each week over several months. Each lecture lasts about 30 minutes, followed by 15 to 20 minutes of discussion. In 2019, we watched lectures on structural design. We learned the basics about arches, domes, cables, trusses and other structural components. For this series of lectures, we’ll learn the lesson taught when these components fail. The lecturer from 2019 returns to analyze over 20 instances of catastrophic failures caused by wind, water, earthquakes, terrorist bombs and other natural and unnatural events. The lectures discuss a new event each week, so you don’t need to come to every lecture in the series. The series’ facilitator is resident John Hope.

Get into character and don your Mardi Gras bling for this interactive program in which audience members work together with comedic results to help to solve the “murder” mystery. A buffet dinner includes shrimp po-boy with remoulade sauce, muffuletta sandwich, Creole potato salad, red beans and rice, hush puppies and pecan pie for dessert. This comedy/romance is rated PG-13, with a run time of 1 hour and 44 minutes.

A talented and respected musician and composer, Charlie Zahm is a singer and player of Celtic, Maritime and traditional American music. He sings baritone and plays guitar, banjo, mandolin, flute, tin whistle and the bodhran, among other instruments. Charlie is joined by the fantastic Baltimore fiddler Tad Marks, who has toured extensively across the United States and Europe with top-name groups. Tad is considered one of the finest fiddlers on the East Coast, and his fiddling ranges from harddriving jigs and reels to the most expressive accompaniment for vocals you will ever hear.

Hike on over for the Hiking Club’s second annual planning meeting. The club enjoyed some great hikes in 2022, and now it’s time to plan our trails to conquer this year. We will discuss what we liked about previous hikes and what we may do differently. Generally, we like to hike at least four miles on an unpaved trail within a 90-minute drive from campus. We always need volunteers to lead hikes, so we invite you to pick your month to lead. No experience is necessary to join us or lead a hike. Located in the Freemasons Cultural Center, the Baird Wellness Center offers an array of cardiovascular and strength equipment, functional training, personal training and group fitness classes. Massage therapy and wellness workshops on mind, body and spirit are also offered.

Open daily, from 5 a.m. – 9 p.m. Staff are available Mon. – Fri., 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. Group exercise classes are broadcast on MVTV Monday through Friday, in the morning.

Brian Reichenbach, trumpet, was recently appointed assistant professor of trumpet at Lee University School of Music in Cleveland, Tennessee. Rhonda Sider Edgington is a concert organist, church musician, chamber musician and currently a fanatical fan of antique Northern German organs. She is a creative and eclectic musician, with a diverse repertoire and a wide range of musical interests. Join this duo for a variety of music for your listening pleasure. Village Connect CLASSES

As we start a new year in 2023, we have some exciting news! During the last few months, we have been trialing the ability to sign up for events on the Village Connect portal. As we move into 2023, we are going to have many more events available for you to sign up for directly through Village Connect. We encourage all residents who have the ability, to download the K4 Community Plus app on your devices and/or computer, so you have access to the benefits of Village Connect.

For residents who do not have access to Village Connect, you will still be able to sign up for events and access information in other ways, but it will be more convenient using the app.

Workshops for Village Connect will take place the second and fourth Thursday of the month, from 2 – 3 p.m., in the Life Long Learning Center.
