7 4 8 9 5 10 1 6 2 LOWER RISK OF DISEASE
Regular cycling stimulates and improves the heart, lungs and circulation, reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. A 2017 study at the University of Glasgow concluded people who cycled were 45% less likely to develop heart disease. Cycling strengthens heart muscles, lowers resting pulse and reduces blood fat levels.
REDUCED AIR POLLUTION
The main reason biking reduces air pollution is it doesn’t use fossil fuels. The average car produces about 1.3 billion cubic yards of polluted air over its lifespan. This doesn’t include worn tire particles, brake garbage and the emissions from plastic and other materials in the car which contribute to air pollution. Opting to ride instead of drive is an effective way to reduce air pollution.
THE JOY of BICYCLING: Top 10 Benefits HAPPINESS
Cycling for just 15 minutes decreases levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, while increasing the production of chemicals in the brain that enhance happiness.
INCREASED BRAIN POWER The benefits of cycling for physical fitness have long been known, but there is growing evidence to support that it’s good for our minds, too. The time spent pedaling a bicycle pumps more blood through the body, supplying the brain and muscles with more oxygen and nutrients, improving memory, reasoning and planning.
WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
Riding a bicycle is aerobic exercise, the kind needed to burn calories and lose weight. Riding a bike will help get rid of excess body fat when combined with a healthy diet. “On average, a moderate pace outdoors for an average adult for 30 minutes would burn around 300 calories,” Sara Fruendt, certified personal trainer and a certified diabetes care and education specialist, said.
REDUCED CANCER RISK
There’s plenty of evidence that any exercise offers protection against cancer. One long-term study carried out by Finnish researchers found men who exercised at a moderate level for at least 30 minutes a day were half as likely to develop cancer as those who didn’t. Studies suggest that women who frequently cycle reduce their risk of breast cancer.
IMPROVED SLEEP
Exercise can significantly improve not only the quality of sleep, but the time it takes to actually fall asleep. Regular, deep sleep is fundamental for good health. In a Stanford University study, researchers found that 20-30 minutes of daily cycling helps people diagnosed with insomnia fall asleep faster and sleep longer.
INCREASED CREATIVITY
Cycling can increase the parts of the brain which govern creativity. Pedaling causes more nerve cells to fire and intensifies the creation of proteins which promote the formation of new brain cells.
IMPROVED CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM An adult uses 10 times more oxygen cycling than sitting. Regular cycling strengthens the cardiovascular system, enabling the heart and lungs to work more efficiently.
IMPROVED RELATIONSHIPS We know cycling increases the natural happiness hormones in the blood, which make riders more content with their life and, subsequently, with their relationships. After a ride, flooded with positive hormones, cyclists have a warmer feeling towards each other.
