Arizona State Championship there was plenty of wind for prac-
January 2-3, 2016 Thank you to the 34 contestants who attended the January 2-3, 2016 Sporter/Unlimited 5-Shot Arizona State Championship. This match will combine with the January 3031, 2016 Light Varmint/Heavy Varmint Arizona State Championship to create a combined 3-Gun and 4-Gun Aggregate. Thursday and Friday were the practice days for the match and
tice on these two days. Suddenly on the first day of the match, the wind disappeared and gave us the best January match we have seen in recent years as far as weather and wind is concerned. Saturday’s temperatures were in the high 60s for the majority of the day and there was a little wind throughout the day. Sunday gave us more of the same great conditions. In fact, condi-
tions were so nice that at one point it looked like two shooters might be getting close to breaking records. Duke Rovarino started out with a very nice aggregate in the first two matches, and then Larry White caught up to him with matches 2-4. If Match 1 would have gone a little different for Larry, we would have seen a contender for the Unl5 5-Shot 200 Yard Aggregate NBRSA Record! Larry White took first in the Sporter Grand Aggregate and Duke Rovarino took first in the Unlimited Grand Aggregate. In the end Larry White came ahead and took home the wood for first place in the two gun aggregate with a 0.2304” Grand Aggregate. He was followed by Duke Rovarino with a 0.2454” Grand Aggregate and Randy Burgess with a 0.2594” Grand Aggregate. All in all we saw many good scores this weekend and were thrilled to see a few screamers and eight shooters with teen Aggregates in the 200 yard Unl5 Grand Aggregate! Wayne Corley wins VFS & Jerry Kloeppel wins Hunter Class October 4, 2015 Another score shooting season has come and gone, we had a total of 14 competitors. We truly do appreciate those that were there and those that were not- you missed a good time! The weather was very nice for an October day with the temperature at cool 50’s in the AM and getting into the 60’s by the end of the match. We had switching head winds the entire day with varying velocity. Almost never did it have a low velocity. In the VFS class at 100 yards the top 5 shooters shot 250’s with Wayne Corley winning with a 250-16X, Bill Haynes placed second, Bud Mundy third followed by Bud Schneidman and fifth was Albert Clark. At 200 yards the winner was Wayne Corley with a 249-6X. Dennis Boyet was second with Bud Mundy again in third place. Mike Schneidman ended in fourth position and Stanley Clark rounded out the top five placements. In the grand, Wayne Corley was the winner with 499-22X followed again by Dennis Boyet, Bud Mundy, Mike Schneidman and Bill Haynes. In the Hunter class the 100 yard winner was “Jumpin’ Joe” Hemkens, except Joe wasn’t doing much jumping around today because he was on crutches--nursing along a bad back. Joe shot a 249-15X, with Jerry Kloeppel second, Clark Green placed third. At 200 yards Jerry Kloeppel took his turn at the win with 242-3X. Jerry was followed by Joe Hemkens and Clark Greene. The grand agg winner was Jerry Kloeppel 491-14X,
with Joe Hemkens and Clark Greene. A special thanks to our match workers, without them there would be no matches. Hope to see you all this spring and some of our other regular competitors also. Potential New World Records at Palomino Valley 4-Gun Match
The Palomino Valley Gun Club hosted a 300 yard 4 Gun group match on October 24th and 25th and the seven competitors were blessed with conditions that were likely the best our range north of Reno, Nevada has ever experienced during a benchrest match held at the Washoe County Regional Shooting facility. On Saturday the 24th, the first aggregate was 5 Shot Unlimited under over-

cast skies, moderate temperatures, and winds that were very light and consistent. Through the first four groups, Steve Archibald was leading the pack with a .1977 agg, but on the 5th group he shot an astounding 0.159” to win the Unlimited with a .1687 agg. Both the group and aggregate are pending new world records. Henry Pinkney and Everet Smith, both from California finished in second and third, respectively. noon and Everet Smith took first place by shooting three of the five smallest targets, including small group of 0.519” and a .2885 aggregate. Don Archibald finished Sporter in second place and Jan Sarras was third. Sunday began with excellent conditions as the competitors shot the Light Varmint 300yd leg of the match. Although Henry Pinkney only had one of the five small groups, he shot consistently and won with an agg of .3110. Jan Sarras finished second and shot a 0.589” for small group while Everet Smith finished third. Heavy Varmint was the final leg of our 4 Gun 300yd match and the conditions held on until the

last couple of groups where typical windy 15+mph switching conditions returned. Everet Smith, who, most of the time, shoots better than the locals at our range, won with a .3591 aggregate. Steve Archibald was a close second place, also earning small group of 0.457”. Jan Sarras finished third. Everet Smith was our Two, Three, and Four Gun Winner! Everet, congratulations on your win. Two Gun second and third place finishers were Jan Sarras and Steve Archibald, respectively. Three Gun second and third place finishers were again Jan Sarras and Steve Archibald, respectively. Four Gun second and third place finishers were Steve Archibald and Jan Sarras, respectively. Thank you to our target pulling and scoring crew: Kelly Marsh and Kerri Sarras. Desert Sportsman Hunter Match
January 24, 2016 The weather had called for high winds this Sunday and five brave souls came out to do battle. We prepared for the worst but got a great day. Some days it pays to take a chance. Brian Jones made a clean sweep of winning both yardages and the grand posting 236-1X in the 200 yard competition, 2488X in 100 yards and 484-9X in the grand aggregate. The feel, the precision, the quality and the ease of adjustment of this tool are unique. Features include click head adjustments for precise primer seating and all stainless steel components with aluminum handle.
Concentricity Gauge with wheel
This device enables the user to rotate the case one complete revolution with about 1/8 of a turn on the wheel. Providing consistent pressure on the case. Easily retrofits in a snap to the 21st Century Shooting Concentricity Gauge (run out gauge - as shown). Features include canting to the left or right to keep the base of the case rotating against the stop. For unlimited setup scenarios. Simply amazing!
Neck Turning Lathe
The floating design of our neck turner and the universal floating case driver allows the case mouth (bore) to run on the arbor absolutely concentric. Therefore allowing O.D. to be turned concentric with I.D. The tail-stock creates a horizontal inline support for the base of the case. Also allows the operator to keep both hands on the power screw driver or drill. This makes it very easy to control feed rate of the cutting operation, generating a very fine turned finish. Case holder drivers are designed to be the most gentle driver, yet providing an adequate hold. DOES NOT DRIVE OFF THE PRIMER POCKET NO PRIMER POCKET OR CASE DAMAGE. Driver shaft is hexed to use power screw driver or drill. 17cal. Fireball to a .416 Rigby. Also 50cal. www.21stcenturyshooting.com 260-273-9909

Letters from the Field: Benchrest Table Top Dimensions
Question: Sir, thank you for taking a moment to answer a question. I represent an accuracy inspired club of hunters who handload. What are the nominal square dimensions including the "cutout" portion of the regulation concrete benchrest? We are trying to utilize all knowledge gained by the professional benchrest community to assist us in the hunting and shooting sports. We wish to pour some concrete shooting benches when the weather will allow and thought what better experience could we tap into than the NBRSA for advise on tabletop shape, dimensions, height etc? We would like to build a short line of benches based on NBRSA recommendations although geared for sport, hunting and recreation. Any dimensions or drawings suggested would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much for your response. JH, Tennessee Response: Hi Jeff, There isn't an official size or even an official shape for the benches. Generally they fall into two categories; the "T" shape and the "U" shape. Nominally, both are about 48" long, and 42" wide in the front, but even this varies by a few inches in either direction at most ranges. The skinny part of the T is typically 16"-20" and is about 18-24" deep. Three inches (3") thick is plenty. Any more thick and it begins to get too tall or cut into your legroom under the bench. The opening on the U-shaped benches is usually around 24" wide and 16-18" deep. The top should come in at about
table height, 32-34" is common. The most important factor is that it is solid on its base. I test the benches I shoot on by leaning on them with my chest while looking through a 40x scope at the target-if the crosshairs move on the target even a 1/4", I know that the top isn't as solid as it should be and I'll need to be very careful with my body position to prevent a benchinduced 'flyer'. T-Shaped benches are generally more popular. Righties and lefties shoot from either side. The biggest issue is when right and left handed people shoot side-by-side. They are literally back-to-back. Narrow T-benches only have room from one competitor on the bench. U-Shaped benches give a single shooter more space for cleaning or loading gear on the bench and provide more separation from opposite handed shooters. A drawback is they are sometimes less comfortable for large people and work best if the shooting lanes are narrow, since you don't have much room to set the gun up for shooting to the left or to the right. I've seen designs with tops rebarred to concrete pillars that wobbled and I've seen designs that
just sat on stacked blocks that were rock-solid. A solid foundation and liberal use of the concrete adhesives/epoxies when assembling seem to be the key to success. My home range bench is a 3" thick top sitting on 3 stacks of four 8x8x8 cement blocks just held together with construction adhesive. As solid as any of the massively overdesigned systems I've seen, though it probably would not last too long at a public range. Someone could lean too hard to one side and tip it over. Rod Brown, Precision Rifleman, Technical Editor Response to PR: I now have a much better understanding of the dimensions needed for our benches. Enough room is needed for equipment but the most important factor being the top is anchored solidly and is as rigid against lateral pressures as possible. That gives me new consideration to our foundation. I’m beginning to see that concrete can be poured the right way or the wrong way and the cost will be the same. I will send pictures this spring. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience sir. --JH, Tennessee

Sahuaro 1000-Yard Benchrest by Dale Arenson January 9, 2016
“Long Range Benchrest Shooting is Life. Anything before or after is just waiting. Okay, I stole that line from Steve McQueen, and of course, he was talking about racing. But I think that anyone who is passionate about our sport, (which is just about all of us) can relate to the dedication and commitment implied by that statement. Or, is it Obsession? The January NBRSA Sahuaro meet at the Three Points Range, west of Tucson was a good example of a bunch of dedicated shooters out there trying their best for another month. We had 12 shooters

and 22 guns and the conditions were exceptionally good for a change. Cold temps the night before, about 46 degrees when we showed up for our 8:00 AM winter start time. But it warmed up into the mid-sixties by the time we were done. The breezes were light and pretty much stayed that way until the fourth relay where they picked up a bit, but still were not all that hard to deal with. Anyone familiar with the happenings at the Sahuaro matches won’t be surprised to learn that Ross Herrick won everything…. Again! I am running out of ways to tell the same story over and over. Ross has to be the winningest shooter I have ever seen. We would like to call him names behind his back, or maybe make up nasty stories about him. But with a guy as friendly, easygoing and helpful as Ross, that is just impossible. Name Ross Herrick Mike Billotte John Benz (LG) John Benz (HG) Steve Everson (LG) Steve Everson (HG) Dale Arenson (LG) Dale Arenson (HG/23) Wayne McDonald Pat Billotte (LG) Pat Billotte (HG) Lon Persun Jeff Billotte (LG) Kim Krueger Warner Zaborowski (LG) Zaborowski (HG)
We are also happy to have someone show us the way, of what can be done, and that it is not a fluke. He does it time after time. It is easy to blame a poor performance on conditions, but when Ross can do it, then you know there is no excuse for you not to be able to do it too. Now back to the match. These competitors here at Sahuaro are no slouches. Out of twelve guns in Light, the top eight shooters all had sub-MOA aggregates, and there were 24 sub-MOA groups! Of course Ross’s were way sub-MOA. He had a 6.31’’, a 4.12’’ and the smallest group of Light Gun, a 3.31’’, for a 4.58’’ winning aggregate. If that number sounds familiar, he had the exact same agg a couple of months ago. His aggregate was over three inches smaller than the second place light gun agg.
The top four scores were within three points, with Ross starting out the day shooting a 50-2X score on his first target, then two 46’s, dropping only eight points to win with a 1423X. John Benz was right on his heels with a 140. The ten shot groups in heavy were pretty much the same story, this time there were only two sub-MOA aggregates, (remember that is 30 shots for score), but there were eight sub-MOA groups. Once again John Benz gave Ross a run for his money in not only group but score. Ross won with a 8.16’’ while John had a 8.83’’. Small group for heavy went to Dale Arenson, who shot a 5.93’’. Heavy gun score was very close with Ross turning in a 284-5X, while John Benz had a 283-4X. John also shot the highest single heavy gun target of 98-2X. All the rest of us were

Shooter Bio: Ron Hoehn Last year, one of my friends greeted me by saying, "Hi Old Timer"! It kind of made me laugh, and at the same time, made me think about how long I have been shooting Benchrest. I was 26 years old before I ever owned a high powered rifle, (I'm 72 now). My brother had wanted me to go deer hunting with him for a few years and my wife finally said, "Central Hardware had rifles on sale, why don't you get one and go with him?" I worked with a shooter, Jerry Glaus, the president of our local club, Bench Rest Rifle Club of St Louis, and he convinced me to get the bolt action Mossburg .308W. He said we could tune it up and shoot in the Hunter matches after deer season. I had a great deal of success with that old 308, and I still have it. (It is probably the only rifle I own that I wouldn't sell). That was back in 1968-69. Hunter matches were very popular back then. In fact, we had 18 benches, and I can remem-
ber having 1 bench short of 2 full relays! I purchased my first used 40x wood stock, 222/35 in 1972 and had Sinclair build my first "Full-Blown" 6PPC, fiberglass stock back in about 1976-77. Art Freund did most of my work locally, but like a lot of shooters, I purchased my own lathe in about 1978-79. I have upgraded to a Nardini, but I still enjoy building and doing the metal work to this day. Tom Meredith does most of my stock work. I naturally shoot here in St. Louis, as I live about a mile from the range, but shoot most of the Kansas City Matches as well. I have only missed a few of the Super Shoots and make most of the National Matches. To say I enjoy/love to shoot might be an "Understatement"! Why, you ask? I think because that one hole group is always elusive and perfection is never totally achievable. My advice to a new shooter would be: buy the best available equipment. (Not the best you can afford, BUT, the best that is available!) Save your money so you only have to cry once! What do I attribute to my success? I never look at shooting as "work". I know when I'm shooting by myself, or with 400 people at the Super Shoot, if I'm shooting well, poor, or just average. I have finished second or third at a match and knew I did the best I could do and was happy with that. On the other hand, I have won matches, not because I shot well, but because the other shooters shot worst than I did. If I am doing my best, I will take second or third every time.

This is a Great game, with many great people. To enjoy this game, you have to like making decisions. Every time you pull the trigger, you have to decide whether the conditions are the same, more or less, AND, remember, the clock IS running. Rarely, can you finish a group holding in the same place. (I have a saying, that might make little girls mad, but, if it were that easy, little girls would do it!). I also have a saying that goes like this: I would like a "screamer" on one side of me, that is, if he looses a shot, he screams! I know instantly that I should get my trigger finger off of the trigger because there is something going on that we cannot see. On the other side of me I would like a new shooter with a well tuned rifle, and that I know is holding on the same place every time, and I can use his record target as a sighter, as I know he is not holding off! I know I am moving around here, but some more good advice for the new shooter: Practice at 200 yards and shoot all the matches you can attend. Matches are normally won and lost at 200 yards, and you will learn more in one match than 5 practice sessions by yourself. My Equipment: TM stocks, Kelbly & BAT Actions, Jewell triggers, Bartlein and Shilen Barrels, Farley Front Rest & Edgewood Rear Bags, 6PPC & 22-.070" short PPC, Lapua Brass, Barts, Hottenstein, & Conaway Bullets and Federal 205 Primers. Last, but certainly not least, you MUST have an UNDERSTANDING wife! Jo Ann understands how much I enjoy shooting AND encourges me to enjoy myself at the matches. Shooting wives refer to themselves as "Bench Rest Widows"! Jo Ann likes to shoot also, and we won the Husband/Wife Super Shoot in 2003. You never do that on the strength of the husband, you always do that on the strength of the wife.

Sheldon Turf Scores New World Record!
The NBRSA office received notice from Rich Carpenter, Chairman of the Score World Record Committee that Sheldon Turf of Las Vegas, Nevada shot a new world record on December 5, 2015. Sheldon’s 498-17X established a new world record in the Varmint For Score 200-300 yard Grand Aggregate and the record was set at Desert Sportsman’s Rifle & Pistol Range in Las Vegas. Sheldon’s record supersedes Hunter Hall of Famer, Tim Naugle’s record of 498-13X, set on August 22, 2013 and which held for over two years. Match Director, Keith Myers said he’s shot with Sheldon for years and witnessed good and bad days. One thing for sure is that Sheldon never gives up. Keith said once Sheldon began smithing his own rifles is when his scores really started to improve. In the photo, Sheldon is with his lovely wife, Sandy, who is also an accomplished shooter. Sheldon set this record using a 30BRX caliber heavy varmint rifle with a BAT 3-lug action, Krieger Barrel which he smithed himself. He used a Franklin stock and was his own stocker. His scope was a NightForce 12-42. He used H4198 powder, 37 grains, Fed-
eral 205 primers, Lapua case and BIB bullets. Congratulations to Sheldon! The updated list of current world records, dates and holders follow. Congratulations again to Sheldon!
