Jerry Kloeppel Wins the Black-Out at St Louis On April 14-15, 2012, Benchrest Rifle Club of St Louis held the first night match in over 20 years - and the first time shooting after dark at our new facility since opening in 1995. The weather predictions were not kind for the weekend but luckily due to the late start on Saturday we were able to get the match in with no rain. Just as we shut down to set up for the match the skies dried up and the winds calmed down. We got the light gun done before we had to turn on the lights. Even though the winds were calm, you could tell by the targets that there was a condition that no one was used to. We finished the night with the fastest time I have ever witnessed - just under four hours for ten matches. Everyone was loading and shooting fast to try to get the best conditions. Sunday brought the south winds with light gusts. Some people got it figured out early and some never did, but we were able to finish up before the rain came again. We had 18 shooters that all had a great time in the dark and are asking for more next year.
We started Sunday off with the HV and Bob Hammack won the HV-200 with a .3982” aggregate and got the small group with a .420”. Just like the night before, we kept it rolling fast; we finished up the Heavy and got started with the LV early in the morning. Terry Hall showed that he could ride the wind and won the LV-200 aggregate with a .2818” and Jim Hart scorched out the small group at .342”. The LV Grand aggregate, HV Grand aggregate and Two-Gun standings are listed in the tables. Looks like we all have a lot to learn or remember about night conditions, so we will need to plan more of these in the future. Safe shooting and keep them on the paper.

Ron Hoehn won the LV-100 with .1916” aggregate but Dave Coots got the small group with a .135”. After the switch to HV, Keith Christensen started off with the small group of .124” and took the win for HV-100 with a .2026” agg. Sunday had a forecast of spot storms and gusting winds. It seemed as if every time I would call the shooters to the line the wind would pick up and not let up until cease fire was called.

Uncle Timmy: Are there any old benchrest shooter homes as an alternative to the many assisted care facilities now available for those of us who are almost there, such as myself? Dear Geezer: You have asked a brilliant question! In the final planning stages is the NBRSA Methuselah Rest Home. It will be built with elderly benchrest shooters in mind. Each shooter will have his/her own room from a palatial suite to a padded cell depending on need and money. Instead of aluminum walkers, big gun carts will be used. The adjacent range will have wheelchair accessible benches. Instead of basket weaving and bingo there will be bullet making and reloading. Physical therapy will be available on the premises in the form of strength training (carry-

ing heavy boxes around), cardio (the 25 yard cart and wheelchair pea gravel run) and flexibility (bending over setting flags). Each cart and wheelchair will have a bullhorn mounted in front so the shooters can communicate with each other. The dining room will serve a variety of meals including fried foods, BBQ, steak both whole and blended in a cup and pie. Beer, wine and Xanax will be served if requested or in most cases needed. Other services such as the most requested Swedish bikini team massage staff will be considered depending on the availability of money. Speaking of money, staying here will set you back about $75,000 a year. What, you don’t have that much? Well, you can always live with your children. Uncle Timmy: Is it true that a new generation of benchrest scopes is on the horizon? Rumor has it that a new Japanese scope is coming out? Dear Rumormonger: Yes, you are correct. A new benchrest type scope is
starting production in Japan. It has been named The Badassumabitchee which loosely translates from Japanese as Formable. It uses state of the art digital electronic imaging with no optics involved. It works in all weather conditions including total darkness, fog and rain. Mirage is canceled by enclosed onboard software. It senses wind speed and direction from the muzzle to the target and an electronic reticle adjusts to compensate for any bullet drift. Right now they cost $450,000 each and they weigh 5 pounds. Projected future cost and weight reductions to bring that to competitive levels propose a market to future customer time of 30 years. Too bad you will probably be dead by then. Second Amendment Concerns Spark Change for McMillan Many of you have already heard about McMillan Manufacturing’s conflict with Bank of America. For those who have not, the discussion according to McMillan International was posted on their company facebook page as follows: “McMillan Fiberglass Stocks, McMillan Firearms Manufacturing and McMillan Group International have been collectively banking with Bank of America for 12 years. Today (April 19, 2012) Mr. Ray Fox, Senior Vice President, Market Manager, Business Banking, Global Commercial Banking came to my office. He scheduled the meeting as an “account analysis” meeting in order to evaluate the two lines of credit we have with them. He spent 5 minutes talking about how McMillan has changed in the last 5 years and have become more of a firearms manufacturer than a supplier of accessories. At this point I interrupted him and asked “Can I possible save you some time so that you don’t waste your breath? What you are going to tell me is that because we are in the firearms manufacturing business you no longer what my business.” “That is correct” he says. I replied “That is okay, we will move our accounts as soon as possible. We can find a 2nd Amendment friendly bank that will be glad to have our business. You won’t mind if I tell the NRA, SCI and everyone one I know that BofA is not firearms industry friendly?” “You have to do what you must” he said. “So you are telling me this is a politically motivated decision, is that right?” Mr Fox confirmed that it was. At which point I told him that the meeting was over and there was nothing left for him to say. I think it is import for all Americans who believe in and support our 2nd amendment right to keep and bear arms should know when a business does not support these rights. What you do with that knowledge is up to you. When I don’t agree with a business’ political position I cannot in good conscience support them.” Until this time, McMillan had a banking relationship in good standing. According to www.gunsandammo.com,
“Director of Operations Kelly D. McMillan said his company had been doing business with Bank of America for the last 12 years and has never been late on a payment or bounced a check. The debt outstanding on the company’s line of credit was at 61 percent as of that Friday.” BofA has since denied this claim and because the April 19th meeting occurred behind closed doors and exclusively between Kelly McMillan and Ray Fox, it is anyone’s guess as

McMillan’s has little to gain from the exposure of events except perhaps some dubious publicity; on the contrary, he now has additional work assignments in researching and establishing a financial relationship with a new institution. Furthermore, Mr. McMillan has taken the added measure of communicating the incident to the outside world via the company’s facebook page and through interviews with numerous media engagements. For the Director of Operations of a multi-million dollar business, this constitutes a large time investment and sheds light on the high priority he gives the situation. Second amendment advocates have flocked to the story and coverage has reached as far as Fox News and Glen Beck’s radio show among many notable others. People were offended at BofA’s alleged “throw-down” and viewed it as an attack on the 2nd amendment and not just an individual corporate decision. In correspondence with Mr. Mc-
Millan, his focus has been very clearly on the 2nd amendment implications and he is doing what is necessary to protect his business in response to the incident. Response was quick when the story broke. Mr. McMillan stated, “the support is overwhelmingly positive for support of our 2nd Amendment rights. People have called, emailed, posted on our face book and distributed the story to friends nationwide. The response is truly national.” In fact, in an interview on April 27, with Karen Jowers of marinecorpstimes.com, “McMillan said he’s answered nearly 1,000 emails and taken about 100 phone calls, and about “99 percent of them are supportive of me.” The week before this happened; his Facebook page had about 3,200 likes. The week following, it had more than 11,000. With all the media attention this story has received, I was curious whether the NRA had issued a position to which Mr. McMillan replied, “The last I heard their official position is that they have no official position. That is based on the idea that there is no way to prove who is telling the truth.” Mr. McMillan also stated he discussed the subject with Mr. Benito Almanza, State President of Arizona for Bank of America, whose response was basically the decision had nothing to do with being a firearms manufacturer but was based on sound banking principals. My concern with Mr. Almanza’s statement is it harkens back to the $45 billion TARP funds BofA received back in 2009. It begs the question as to where those “sound banking principals” were prior to the bailout. Furthermore, on April 27, 2012 on FoxNews.com, a BofA spokeswoman again denied McMillan’s account, saying Bank of America has never had any policies prohibiting banking or lending to clients in the firearms industry. Bank of America may have some dubious practices; however, it is my conviction that the decisions to torque McMillan’s credit lines were made by an individual employee and not a part of general corporate practice. Dan Dowling is Two-Gun Top-Gun at Central Utah Bench Rest On May 5-6, 2012 at Springville, Utah, Central Utah Bench Rest Club held their sporter and unlimited two-gun match. Beautiful weather graced us this weekend with cool mornings and afternoons in the 60’s. Pretty much the norm for springtime in northern Utah after a mild winter. Wind was the only fly in the ointment as we experienced moderately gusty winds both days. Not to complain though, it was certainly better than the snow we had last year. Thirty one shooters from California, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming and Utah attended the first stage of the Utah State Championship. For most of them, it was their first tournament of the year and they were anxious to smell gun smoke and Hoppe’s. There was so much ribbing and joking between matches you would of thought it was a roasting, not a tournament. I believe everyone got a good natured skewering at least once for an errant shot. Norm Cox and Gil Graser started the Sporter 100 off each shooting a .216 for the small group in match one. Rudy Carnesecca shot a .181 for small group in match two followed by Jeff Williams .185 in three. Small group for the yardage was a .167 shot in match four by Dave Blazzard. Joe Olas wrapped up the Sporter 100 stage with a .227 in match five. Keith Kirkman’s .2426 agg took first place followed by Jeff Williams in second and Dan Dowling in third. After lunch the big guns came out and the ten shot Unlimited 100 was underway. Jeff Williams won match one with a .281 and also had small group for the yardage in match four with a .183. Gil Graser won match two with a .348; Dave Blazzard won match three with a .258 and Lou Murdica won match five with a .249. Gil Graser, who was shooting his Sporter, won the 200 yard stage with a .3246 agg followed by Jeff Williams in second and Lou Murdica in third. Lowell Frei won the Sporter 200 with a .3631 agg. Second place went to Dan Dowling with a .3635 and Jim Erickson took third place with a .3759 agg. Dan Dowling’s .3212 Grand Agg. won the Sporter class while Lowell Frei’s .3372 takes second place and Dana Andrus third place with a .3553. Dan Dowling is also the Sporter & Unlimited Two Gun Champion by virtue of his .3883 Two Gun Agg. with Dave Blazzard taking second with a .4091 and Dana Andrus in third with a .4196 Agg.

Larry Boers Wins the 2012 Allen Bench Trophy at Tacoma Tacoma Rifle & Revolver Club had their first match of the 2012 season on the weekend of April 7 & 8. Saturday started off with greeting old friends while dusting off gear. Some shooters were noted staring at gear as if it had just fallen out of the sky. Some were seen dropping cleaning rods or stabbing fingers when trying to pierce patches to clean barrels. Jeb, the dog, was having a grand time greeting everyone while running all over the range with his special stick in his mouth daring anyone who could get it from him to throw it. We had clear skies and the thermometer started out at a chilly 28 degrees and headed to a high in the low 60’s. We had moderate winds that got stronger and switchier as the day wore on; the effects of the winds can definitely be seen in the day’s aggs. We started off with the light varmint 100 yard. This match ended up with what would be some of the better conditions and aggs for the weekend. “The Master” Steve Kostanich would show everyone that he still had good vision and lightening fast reflexes by coming in first with a .2280 agg. Coming in Second was second year shooter Bob Weesies, followed by Jeff Lewis in third place. Jeff took the small group honors with a .108”. Coffee mugs are given here at TRRC for the small group at a yardage. They seemed to have become a very coveted item.

Jim Carmichel Sets a New World Record! As originally reported in May’s issue, it has now been confirmed that Jim Carmichel has indeed set a new NBRSA world record. On March 24, 2012, the measuring committee determined his 5, 5-shot groups at 100-yards measured an .1441 aggregate, establishing a new world record in Light Varmint Class. Jim Dowling Wins Van Dyne Sportsmen’s Hunter Match Van Dyne Sportsmens Club May 5, 2012 Well, good old May in Wisconsin again this year. Two days before our May shoot we were greeted with 7 inches of rain that would have made it possible to float a canoe down to the 200 yard targets. We always seem to catch a break, however, as the water had receeded by Friday afternoon so we could get down range. It made for some creative driving for our target crew to get targets down range on Saturday morning. So on to the 100-yard results. We had 26 shooters attending and rather switching conditions made for a quite interesting start. Long-time local shooter, Lee Keller shot a 50-4X on the first record target and never looked back. Lee finished with a 250-19X to take the 100-yard title. In second was another local shooter, John Puhl, who also started with a 50-4X but had only 3X’s on his second target to give Lee the opening he was looking for as they matched scores for the last three targets. John finished in second place with a 250-17X. Excellent shooting from both. At 200-yards there was only one shooter that stayed clean. Desert Sportsman: Keith Myers Does It Again! What a windy match we had with gusts up to 30 mph. Something was missing though and no one could figure it out. We used to have song birds chirping between relays but today was sorta quiet. It was that new shooter from Arizona who got the blame. He showed up without his Amish disguise and left the beard and birds nest at the barber. Without his facial wind probe, DeBacco was the man to beat after the 100 yard relay. Missing his beard and the constant chirping in his ears at 200, he gave the championship away. Myers was drafting behind DeBacco during the 100 match and then at 200 made his move and slipped right past him for the checkered flag.

Clayton Martin is Holton’s 2012 President’s Cup Champion! April 28-29, 2012 Registering for benches started at 1:30PM on Friday for the first group match of the 2012 season at Holton. The crew started to set frames around 5:30, so that competitors could set their flags before heading to dinner or a late evening practice before the main event. We figured we would need extra time considering the rain and wind that was forecasted. Once the flags were set, most participants headed into the club house for the Friday night supper which we always do before all of our shoots. This is reason enough to come and join us, as the menu included meatloaf, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, corn and freshly baked pie with ice cream. Saturday morning started with Light Varmint 100 yard at 9AM with a little rain and even some snow. Yes, SNOW! Pat Canning came through with a .2262 to win the LV100. Scores are posted but notice our new shooter, Kevin Barnhard placed third in the LV100 aggregate. Looks like the local boy makes good! In the afternoon was the HV100 and the weather was still a little brisk for the shooters. Now Clayton Martin, 87 years young, comes up and siezes the HV100 with a 1996. Sunday morning started the HV200 at 8AM with weather still on the chilly side but high hopes of a little warmer weather as the day progressed. Alex Calder took the HV200 with a .2217 and Vic Halverson won the HV Grand with a .2446.

Gene Bukys Wins the Two-Gun at 19th Annual Bluebonnet The annual Bluebonnet shoot was held May 5th and 6th at Dietz range in New Braunfels, Texas. We shot SP/LV 100 yards on Saturday and LV/SP 200 yards on Sunday. We had 31 shooters attend the match this year. Virgil Howarth did a great job calling the match, Mrs. Thomas ran the computer while her husband Duane was shooting and our local Boy Scout troop did a fantastic job running targets. Without their help this match would not be possible. Gene Bukys, Charles Huckeba, and Duane Thomas all started Saturday morning off right by shooting ones in the first match. Dietz range gave up a total of ten ones that morning which is not normal for this windy challenging range. It was a battle between Gene Bukys and Charles Huckeba for most of the morning. Small groups were shot by Charles Huckeba, Scott Hunter, Gene Bukys, Gary Grove, and Gary Bristow throughout the morning. In the end it was Gene Bukys with a fine .2006 edging out Charles Huckeba with a .2404 for top spot. After lunch we resumed our 100 yard shooting with Light Varmint. Charles Huckeba, Gene Bukys, Mike Bryant, and Mike Elliot all started the afternoon off with four one’s. The conditions were windy but manageable because the range gave up a total of sixteen ones that afternoon. Once again it was Gene Bukys and Charles Huckeba battling for the top spot. Both shooters wound up shooting teen aggs for the afternoon. At the end of the day it was Charles Huckeba with a fantastic .1832 agg edging out Gene Bukys with an impressive .1984 agg. Two teen aggs!! Sunday morning at 200 yards proved to be very challenging because the weather decided to dump a couple inches of rain and showed no signs of letting up. Driving rain pushed by high gusty winds made shooting very difficult. At times the targets were all but impossible to see. Luckily the rain blew out and we could concentrate on shooting. Sunday afternoon shooters faced challenging gusty winds. It was the veterans Charles Huckeba and Gene Bukys along with young local shooter Gary Bristow shooting for the top spot. In the end experience prevailed with Charles Huckeba edging out the field with a .3470 followed by Gene Bukys and Gary Bristow. At the end of a challenging two day shoot it was Gene Bukys winning the Sporter Grand with a .2784 edging out Charles Huckeba and Tim Oltersdorf. Gene Bukys also won the Light Varmint Grand with a fine .2308 edging out Charles Huckeba and Tim Oltersdorf. The Two-Gun was won by Gene Bukys with a .2546 with Charles Huckeba and Tim Oltersdorf following.

Bill Johnston is Top Gun at 1,000-Yard Long Range Nationals
Bill Johnston, Champion 2012 1,000-Yard Nationals Bill Johnston attributes his success to having a good gun and good wind. When asked about his strategy he said he shoots at different wind conditions on the practice target so that if the condition returns during the record you know how to respond. He said you have to watch the wind, look for shifts and compensate. I inquired whether he agrees that competitive bench rest shooting is as much a mind game as it is skill, to which he responded: #1 - It is important to have an accurate rifle when you go to the line and #2 - To have confidence in the load and accuracy of your rifle and know the bullet will land where you expect. Bill has been shooting since he was 3 years old. His father was a gun maker so it has always been a part of his life. He started with a muzzle loader, then progressed to pistols and rifles. He has always enjoys shooting squirrels from far distances. He entered long range competition around 2 years ago because he liked the challenge. He said now that he’s recently retired he considers LR shooting his new full-time job.
Richard Schatz, Winner, Two-Gun 1000-yd Richard Schatz, likes to use the expression, “the wind can blow them in just as easy as it can blow them out.” Based on his placements, I guess the wind was on his side this time. Richard’s been shooting since he was a little tyke. The county where he was
raised offered a bounty of 4-cents for each gopher tail brought to the commissioner. His father supplied all the rimfire ammo as long as he didn’t waste it. Well, waste ammo he did not; waste gophers he did - and in abundance. He and his brother ended up turning in a whopping 4,800 gopher tails in one year! That’s three 5-quart ice cream buckets full of gopher tails, according to Richard. He began shooting long range in 2001, when he had a custom rifle built and was anxious to shoot it. He went to Missoula, Montana that weekend to try it out. The other participants were shooting large caliber brass and were poking fun at Richard’s small cartridge...right up until the end when he took home a handfull of cash. It goes to show that in shooting, sometimes size doesn’t matter. Terry Balding Takes Top Gun at 2012 600-Yard Nationals Terry Balding’s been shooting about 8 years but only seriously the last 2. His placement speaks volumes considering he runs his own firm, Wisconsin Wealth Advisors and shoots for fun when he can. When asked how he selected long range benchrest, he stated he purchased a savage 6BR and needed to find some ranges with which to shoot it. He gives new meaning to the phrase, “have gun, will travel.” The closest matches to his home are about 5 hours drive. Frank Vance, Speaking of “have gun, will travel,” Texan Frank Vance is no stranger to shooting. He built his first gun in high school and he’s sprung onto the long-range benchrest scene 3-4 years ago. Frank won the 2-gun score aggregate and left the nationals with a prospective world record for 2-Gun 12-target score. Frank’s waiting for the formal piece of paper confirming this and then he’s having a party! He said he’s had a great year and Shilen and Berger have been wonderful to him. Berger will chase down lot numbers of bullets, which really helps him when he finds one that works well. Since Frank’s trade is repairing mills and lathes and one of his customers is Shilen, it was only a matter of time when they asked him to test some of their barrels. Well practice he did...shooting hogs from 1,000-yards when he got bored wtih barrels. The prospective 2-gun world record was shot using a Shilen DGA for light gun and a DGV for heavy. Shoot & giggle is Frank’s moto and he strives to be a good ambasador for the sport. The light-hearted Frank doesn’t understand grumpiness at the matches and his moto reflects his shooting attitude as well as his wind flag dancing.
When asked what he thinks has helped him in his shooting skill, he said the one thing Texas has alot of is wind and this has helped him greatly. In short bench he was middle of the pack and was just tickled to simply place. Twice he was dead last. Now he carries 8 trophies, a likely world record and 2 Hall of Fame points. The sour grapes were quiet...time for a wind-flag dance. Dick Colyar, LG 6-Target Group winner, says he’s just delighted to be in the top-ten and that it’s taken many people to help him get there. Dick has been shooting since 1966 when he got out of the Navy. He’s originally a black powder guy but changed to long-range about 6 years ago. 2012 Long Range Nationals, continued John Crawford, who won the heavy gun 6-target group at 600-yards, transitioned to long range 2 years ago after 3 years of short range shooting. He was drawn to bench rest because of the accuracy and enjoys the competitive environment. He feels that attention to detail is the key to great long range shooting success and that shooting short range gave him a solid foundation in loading and tuning to shoot well in long range. For John, shooting is strictly a hobby as his primary occupation is in the pharmaceutical industry. Robert Hoppe, 1,000-yard Light Gun Score Champion also set a potential world record in 6-target score with a 288/6X at 1,000-yards. This will not be Hoppe’s first rodeo, as last year he set another world record at 10shot score at 600-yards with 100/3X. Overall, Robert holds 5 standing 600yard world records. In addition to the record mentioned above, he holds LG 5-shot Group, HG 10-Shot Aggregate, Two-Gun 6-Target Agg and LG 5-Shot Agg. Shooting long range since 1993, Robert appears to be one of the veterans. At the conclusion of the 2012 Nationals, both Robert Hoppe and Bill Johnston stand 1 Hall of Fame point away from induction!

Bigelow Bests Both HV & VFS Championships at Council Bluffs 2012 Nebraska State Heavy Varmint Group Championship
2012 Nebraska State VFS Championship
Mike Bigelow of Madrid, Iowa showed himself equally adept at group and score shooting winning both the Nebraska State Heavy Varmint and Varmint for Score Championships. The competition was held April 28 and 29 at Council Bluffs Rifle and Pistol Club.
In the Varmint for Score Championship on Sunday, Brad Borges jumped out to an early lead, firing a possible worldrecord 250/24X at 100 yards.
The match drew 20 shooters for the group Championship on Saturday and 16 for the Varmint for Score Championship on Sunday. Despite record-setting warm temperatures all winter, it was sunny and cool for the Saturday matches; cooler yet with some rain for Sunday. Mike notched an early lead in the group championship finishing the 100yard stage with a first-place .2174 aggregate, comfortably in front of Jeff Shultz, who was second with a .2888. Top five at 100 are listed. Dave Brooks, a new shooter, fired the small group of 0.135. When the targets were moved out to 200 yards, Jon Leu was first with a .2798 aggregate, Top five shooters are posted. Dave Brooks did it again and fired the small group of 0.328 at 200 yards.

Chris Harris Breaks The Ice At Minnetonka! Minnetonka Game & Fish Club hosted the first match of the year on April 21st and 22nd . A total of 21 shooters showed up to brave the elements and battle it out in less than great conditions. The nice weather the region had experienced earlier seemed to disappear a week before the match. Temps were in the high 30’s in the morning and warmed to high 40’s by the afternoon. The North Dakota boys showed up in mass and the Hawkeye contingent traveled north as well. One shooter from South Dakota and another from Wisconsin rounded out the five state area. The new benchrest building was completed last fall, you couldn’t ask for a nicer place to reload during cold weather. Everyone was toasty warm in between relays and during the lunch break. Council Bluffs new benchrest building Saturday morning we started out with the LV-100yd.The wind was switchy and the flags were constantly turning. The overcast cloud cover kept the mirage to a minimum. Scott Moser was shooting great and led the pack all morning. He was being chased by Chris Harris all 5 matches but held on to secure the win. Scott shot a nice .2384 for 1st place, followed by Chris who posted a .2574 for 2nd. Chris also shot the small group .101. After lunch we shot the HV-100yd, the rain started during the break and continued off and on through 3 matches. Wind conditions remained the same as the day had started all though the intensity changes started picking up. Doc Peterson put on a clinic and shot a .2378 to take 1st place honors. Dave Dowd finished in 2nd with a nice .2518. Chris Harris shot the small group again with a .108.

Over cast skies kept the mirage at bay but the wind was still playing havoc with a lot of shooters. Scott Moser shot a very respectable .2591 to take 1st place, followed closely by Keith Christianson who scored a .2693 for 2nd place. Small group honors went to Dave Dowd with a .317 group. The LV-200yd started right after lunch with the same wind conditions playing the field. Once again we had a nice overcast so the target picture was clear thru the scopes. Terry Hettich blew the field away with an awesome agg of .1937 for 1st place. Dave Dowd finished with a .2224 to take 2nd. The small group wood went to Terry Hettich with a .211 screamer. When the scores were all tallied, it was Chris Harris who captured the LV Grand honors, with Terry Hettich coming in 2nd and Dave Dowd securing 3rd. Doc Peterson won the HV Grand followed by Keith Christianson in 2nd and Scott Moser in 3rd. Congratulations to Chris Harris the Two Gun winner, Dave Dowd finished in 2nd, followed by Terry Hettich in 3rd , Keith Christianson in 4th and Dean Ekstrom finishing in 5th. A special thanks to our target crew Dan & Jeanette. Your hard work is appreciated by all the shooters. Everyone had a great time at the “Ice Breaker” The range constantly challenges all the shooters, this is why its so interesting shooting at MGFC. Norm Jeffery Strikes Again at Visalia’s Two-Gun April 21-22, 2012 The weather for April had been mild except for a few storms that blew in, but that all changed the weekend the Visalia range held a club match. The temperature went from the low 70’s to the mid-90’s during the match. Most of the 30 competitors had a hard time adjusting to the heat except Gary Ocock and Walt Berger - both Phoenicians and are used to heat.
with all five groups in the fours to win the 200-yard trophy. Second place trophy went to Bob McGraw shooting a .2276 for a fairly close finish. Bill Mellor won the small group trophy with a .260. The Sporter Grand, Light Varmint Grand and the Light Varmint-Sporter two-gun top five winners are posted. --Bill Mellor
On Saturday, Joe Stanovich started off the Sporter class by winning the 100yard match with a .1816 aggregate. A fairly new shooter to Visalia, Jim Nicolas placed second with a .1972. The small group award went to Gary Sinclair with a .118. Norm Jeffery took over at 200-yards and won the first place trophy with a .2220. Don Nielson placed second with .2317 and Bob McGraw won the small group award with a .212.

Bob Hammack wins in Grand-Style at Mill Creek Rifle Club We held the Light Varmint class on Saturday, May 5 with 30 shooters present at the Bruce Hodgdon Range. Jerry Tompkins came to the match to visit some old friends. Jerry is one of our former shooters who has been through some serious health issues. We were all glad to see him. We also had Charlie Scott, another of our former shooters visiting the match. Brian Cook came and participated in the match and we were glad to welcome him back. The weather was clear, hot and light tail winds at the start of the match. Larry Conrad started off by winning his first aggregate with a .2148, TK Nollan .2320, Jim Hemmert .2370, Bob Hammack .2472, Jim Gardner .2476 were the top five. Small Group .131 was fired by TK Nollan. While the frames were being moved for the 200-yard event the winds began to change directions and speed. Bob Hammack won the 200 Light Varmint .3517, Don Creach .3906, Larry Scharnhorst .3913, Tim Turnbull .4329, Howard Cower .4342 were the top five. Small Group honors went to Jon Leu who fired .334. Bob hammack won the Light Varmint Grand Aggregate .2995, Don Creach .3290, Larry Conrad .3589, Larry Scharnhorst .3654, Greg King .3668 were the top five. Sunday morning was bright sunshine and clear skies when we started the match with the forecast for rain later that evening. Winds were blowing in our face for match one. Match two brought low, dark clouds, light wind, very good conditions for the rest of the match. Bob Hammack won the 200-yard aggregate .1770, Lelan Kirk .2209, Don Creach .2239, Larry Scharnhorst .2425, Chet Whitebread .2460 were the top five. Small Group of .268 went to Lelan Kirk. Don Creach won the 100-yard aggergate with .2154. Greg King .2296, Bud Mundy .2316, Melin Hubbard .2362 and
Bob Hammack .2406 were the top five. Small Group .089 shot by Dee Myers. Not surprisingly, Bob Hammack won the Heavy Varmint Grand Aggregate .2088 with Don Creach .2197 second, Ron Hoehn .2564 third, Greg King .2588 fourth and Lelan Kirk .2618 rounding out the top five winners. Mike Bigelow Takes Hunter; Ron Miller Wins VFS Mill Creek Rifle Club held its HTR/VFS match on April 14-15, 2012 with 36 shooters in attendance. It was a very tough and windy weekend with the threat of tornados and severe storms looming all over the midwest. The local weather broadcasted the winds at 35 45 mph. Needless to say the scores took a beating. In Varmint for Score, Sam Longhofer managed the only 250 at 100-yards for the win. Tim Turnbull won 200 by an â&#x20AC;&#x153;Xâ&#x20AC;? and Arlyn Copley took the 300 yard stage. Tim Turnbull did his usual steady shooting and won the 100 and 200 yard aggregate. Ron Miller either tied or was second in each yardage and would up winning the 200-300 aggregate and the three yardage grand. In Hunter class Tim Henderson won the 100-yard, Mike Bigelow the 200-yard and Mike McFarland the 300. Mike Bigelow and Mike McFarland shared every aggregate; Bigelow the 100 and 200, McFarland the 200 and 300. Tomball Gun Club: Gene Bukys Wins Crawfish for 4th Time!
Gene Buckys 1st, Jay Lynn Gore 2nd, and Vic Smith 3rd.
I would like to start with a big Thank You to Charles Huckeba for the encouraging words about halfway through the match – it kept me going. We had 48 shooters who came out for the 2012 Crawfish. The conditions were tough on Saturday with the winds blowing 15 to 25 mph all day and extremely switchy - nothing unusual for Tomball range. We started with LV 100 yd. Jay Lynn Gore won with a .2566, 2nd was Gene Buckys, Jay Gore, Winner LV-100 3rd was Vic Smith. Mike Guillot had the small group with a .139. After lunch came HV 100 yd. Vic Smith won with a .2458, John Horn was 2nd and 3rd c a m e Vic Smith, HV-100 Winner C h a r l e s Huckeba. Small group went to Glen Chism with 0.119. Glen also won the $100 for his small group at 100 yds. Sunday the winds calmed down some, 5 to 15 mph but still switchy. The challenge was the great deal of mirage, especially during the afternoon. Well, you have it: Gene Buckys won the 2012 Crawfish 2 gun for the 4th time. Jay Lynn Gore was 2nd and 3rd went to Vic Smith. Congratulations Gene. He did tell me after the match he shot 30.4g all weekend & never changed his load. I hope this wasn’t supposed to be TOP SECRET.
Gene Bukys, Two-Gun Champion started with HV 200 yd. Gene Buckys won with a .2281, 2nd was Catalin Loghin and 3rd came Larry Baggett. Zane Athey had the smallest group with a .256. HV grand was won by Gene Buckys, 2nd belonged to Larry Baggett, and 3rd was Vic Smith. At this point it looked like Gene would be taking the traveling trophy home if he didn’t shoot that 1 big group in LV 200 yd. After lunch we started LV 200

Roye Leckemby Passes
It is with a heavy heart that we notify our members of Wally Siebert’s passing. His son, Rayner Siebert wrote the following, “I am sending this to everyone in dads contact list. Two weeks ago we took dad to the hospital and yesterday he passed away. He had a triple by-pass 20 years ago and in the last few months we had made several trips to the hospital with him, this time his body could not recover from heart and lung disease. Thank you to all who have been good friends and family over the years. He will be greatly missed.”
We mourn the passing of our dear friend and long-time shooter Roye Leckemby. As Eastern Regional Director, Joe Krupa says, “the entire sport of benchrest has lost a great friend. I shot my first group benchrest match at the Hog Roast in 1996. And we have worked with Roye and the entire crew at Fairchance to keep the Hog Roast going. Roye was instrumental in getting the 2013 NBRSA Nationals at Fairchance. He always ran a class event.
A mourner in Tucson wrote that Wally will probably be best remembered for his work and expertise in scopes, but as someone who grew up in Germany during the war, and later moved to Australia he was a fascinating guy to just sit and listen to. Wally was a life member of NBRSA and on behalf of the entire benchrest community, we extend our sad condolences to the Siebert family.

We were fortunate to induct Roye into the Eastern Region Hall of Fame at the 2011 Hog Roast; when Roye was able to accept the tribute that the Region bestowed on him for his hard work and dedication to the sport. Fellow shooter Roger from West Virginia shares that there was never a question of favortism or cheating when he was involved in a match and that he is a better person for having known him. We send condolences and well wishes to the Leckemby family.

Bud Mundy wins VFS Clark Greene wins Hunter
On April 22, 2012, we just couldn’t get a break when it comes to wind this year on match days. The wind was a switching headwind all day; however it actually started out in the morning as a medium wind and progressed to more than anyone wanted by the time we got to 200 yards. There were NO let ups and it pretty much came from either 11 or 12 o’clock at about 25 MPH. We had 12 Hunter shooters and 14 Varmint for Score shooters for a total of 26. In the VFS class at 100 yards the winner was Tom Rippee with 250/17X, 2nd was George “7MM BR” Ulrich and 3rd was Bud Mundy. George and Bill Downey were shooting a 7MM BR today, George made a set of bullet dies and made up 85 grain bullets so that
will be their project for the season. At 200 yards Bud Mundy was the winner using a 6PPC with a sore of 246/4X, 2nd was Tom Rippee and 3rd was Bill Haynes. In the grand agg the winner was Bud Mundy with 495/21X, 2nd was Tom Rippee with 494/21X and 3rd was Brad Hawkey with 492/16X. In the Hunter class the 100 yard winner was Mark Frost with 250/18X, 2nd was Jerry Kloeppel and 3rd was Clark Greene. At 200 yards the winner was Tim Henderson with 244/3X, 2nd was Clark Greene and 3rd was Jerry Kloeppel. In the grand agg the winner was Clark Greene with 492/17X, 2nd was Jerry Kloeppel with 491/15X and 3rd was Tim Henderson with 491/15X- the tie breaker rule was used.
