Minnetonka: Minnesota State Championship August 18-19, 2012

and Dave Dowd 3rd with a .3412.

What a nice weekend for a benchrest match. We had temperatures in the mid 70s with moderate wind for both days. We started Saturday morning with Sporter 100 and the 3rd leg of the MN State Championship. Dean Ekstrom came up from Iowa to show us how to get it done. Dean shot a nice .2000 agg for the win and Jay Sperry in 2nd with a .2258 Jerry Lahr was 3rd with a .2332. Jerry Lahr had a.115 for small group.

After lunch we put away the rail gun and picked up our sporter for the afternoon match. The wind had been steadily picking up with very heavy mirage. It was a lot easier shooting the rail gun when you didn’t have to look at the target with the scope .

After lunch you could shoot either heavy varmint or unlimited. In HV it was again Dean Ekstrom with the win with a .2238 agg and behind him Jay Sperry in 2nd with a .2944 and Scott Moser 3rd with a .3368. Dean Ekstrom had the small group with a .077 screamer. In the 5 shot UNL it was Jerry Lahr that set a new potential world record with groups of .137, .086, .120, .101, and .121 for a .1130 agg. Josh Moser was 2nd with a .2540 and Dave Dowd 3rd with a .4176 after his rail moved and he shot a 1.370 group. Jerry Lahr had small group with a .086. We only had 3 rail guns for this match, it sure would nice to see this class grow. Sunday morning we stated off with HV 200yds and switchy condition and heavy mirage. There were times when you couldn’t see the rings on the target. That didn’t seem to matter to Nick (The Hammer) Moser who came away with the win with a .3221 agg. Scott Moser (dad) was 2nd with a .3450 and Dean Ekstrom 3rd with a .3567. Small group was .421 by Ken Hanson. Dean Ekstom won the HV Grand with a .2903, Scott Moser 2nd with a .3409 and Nick Moser 3rd with a .3545. In the UNL 200yds it was again Jerry Lahr who show them how to drive a rail gun with a .2262 agg for 1st. followed by Josh Moser in 2nd .2380 agg and Dave Dowd in 3rd with a .2648. The UNL Grand agg went to Jerry Lahr with a fine .1696, Josh Moser 2nd .2460

Again the Hammer, Nick Moser out shot everyone for the win. Did I mention Nick is only 14 and has been on a roll all summer? He said he likes to stay close to the leaders at 100yds and then put the Hammer down on us at 200yds. This young man can really shoot well if he can keep Scott (dad) from messing with his rifle. Dave Dowd was 2nd .3197 and Jerry Lahr 3rd with a .3221. Jay Sperry shot a nice .376 in some bad conditions for the small group. The Sporter grand went to the steady shooting of Dean Ekstrom with a .2726 and Jerry Lahr hot on his heels with .2776 and Dave Dowd 3rd with a.2823. With Dean Ekstrom winning both Sporter and HV grand we thought we might as well give him the 2gun as well. Dean did a terrific job of shooting over 2 days. He is Mister Steady. The Hammer Nick Moser just behind him with a .3434 and Scott Moser 3nd with .3801. This was the last leg in the 3-Gun, we shot the LV and HV in June. The 3-Gun went to Jerry Lahr with a .2697, Josh Moser in 2nd with a .2759 and Scott Moser 3rd with a .3097. I don’t know how Scott shoots so well as he has to keep 3 boys shooting. Along with cleaning guns and help with reloading, running the match and the boys driving him nuts. He probably needs a stiff drink when it’s over! Thanks to everyone for coming and hope to see you at the September match. A big thank you also to Dan and Jennet our target crew for job well done.

Dear Uncle Timmy: Why, oh why do bullets, powder, barrels and actions vary from one lot to another? Where is the consistency in our lives as benchrest shooters? Dear Confused: I could give you a myriad of technological reasons for the statistical variance in lots of steel, bullet jackets, etc but here is the real reason: you are the victim of demonic forces sent by the express order of the prince of hell to make your life miserable. Live with it. Dear Uncle Timmy: What do you mean by primer pocket? Dear Haberdasher: It is that little pocket usually on the right side of mens pants just inside of the main pociet. Its main use is to collect spare change and spill it out when you fumble for coins to complete a purchase. Dear Uncle Timmy: What is the main attribute of a good benchrest wife? Dear Male Sexist: Valium and lots of it. Dear Uncle Timmy: Is there doping in benchrest? Dear DEA Surrogate: Yes. There are a current list of performance enhancing drugs in wide use among benchrest shooters: thorazine, preparation H, scrotal botox, Centrum Silver multivitamines, BBQ made from road kill, cheap tequila, poison arrow frogs washed down with beer and, of course, viagra. Dear Uncle Timmy: Do benchrest shooters wear boxers or briefs? Dear Unmentionables: No. They all go commando. The next time you are on the line look at the shooters next to you and form a mental picture of that. Dear Uncle Timmy: What do I need to become a benchrest columnist like you? Dear Curious: Bath salts and spellchecker.

Sahuaro 1000-Yard Benchrest September Match September 8, 2012 A familiar name to Long-Range benchrest, Ross Herrick worked his magic once again at Three Points Range in Tucson. He claimed the win in all four events during this match. Conditions this match were calm with wind from 2 o’clock with a little twich to it. Ross says the wind will be friendly for about 30 seconds and then it changes...typical for the desert climate. Remember that in the long range matches, an aggregate consists of light gun 3 5-shot groups and heavy gun is 3 10-shot groups. Ross says this time he almost shot the “holy grail of long range” in the light gun class when he scored 4 bulls out of five but the wind let up on the fifith shot and pulled it over to the 9-ring for a score of 49/4X. Still not too shabby shootin at a distance of 1000 yards.

Congratulations to Ross Herrick once again and to all the long-range participants. You’re in a league all your own! Northern Colorado: Firewalker Celebrating 25 Years Thanks to Bud and Judy Schalles, a good time was had by all. Thirty six shooters came for the 25th Anniversary of the Firewalker. Bud ran a smooth shoot and Judy provided a great meal for more than fifty hungry people. Judy makes some of the best homemade pies in Colorado. Special mention to Roger Tillery for being handy on the grill. The steaks were mouthwatering. The meal alone was worth the trip, so shooters who did not attend, make certain to book your trip to this event in 2013 early to taste the fares yourselves!

the three gun and .3169 for the four gun. Loren Leider had a great year of shooting earning himself a place in the Northern Colorado Hunter Class Hall of Fame. As a special note, five of the original Firewalkers showed up for this 25th shoot; Dan Dowling, Truman Wilson, John Ambler and Bob Prather came to shoot and reminisce. Charlie Barber came for the great food and visited as a show of support.

Loren Leider, newest No Colorado Hunter Hall of Fame inductee incredible .1701 agg with Dan Dowling (one of the original Firewalkers) taking the small group with a .241. Scott also took first place in the 100 yard Heavy Varmint shooting a .2070 aggregate. Todd Tyler took the small group with a .136.

2012 Firewalker, Todd Tyler & Match Director extraordinaire, Bud Schalles Saturday morning for the 100 yard Light Varmint, Todd Tyler provided excitement for the weekend by shooting a possible world record aggregate of .1418 through a tricky over the shoulder condition, leaving a lot of distance between himself and and Rod Brown’s second place .2514. His agg left the other shooters inspired. When asked about his good fortune, Todd said he doesn’t normally shoot small groups but things were just working right for him this day. His efforts were a .203, .098, .107, .139, and .162. He also took the small group with that .098. Todd not only finished the 100 yardage in first place but he also took first in the 200 yardage finishing the day with a .2291. Betty Sheldon shot the small group with a .276. The 2-gun looked out of reach on Sunday but Scott showed us you should never give up. Scott Smallwood (aka Tommy Gunn) took first place in the 200 yard Heavy Varmint shooting a an

Todd and Scott finished the weekend with Todd in first place adding his name to the coveted Firewalker Trophy and Scott finishing in second. Todd completed his grand a g g r e gate with .2202 and Scott with a .2334. G r e a t shooting you guys! For insights into Mark Schwab having the mind a great time of a benchrest shooter and a comical look at the mental games that ensue, be sure to read this month’s article entitled Range Ramblings from Tommy Gunn beginning on page 24. This shoot was the last leg of the range’s 3- and 4-gun competition and Dean Thomas, always the consistent shooter, took home the both trophies finishing his year with a .3194 agg for

If you’re wondering how the Firewalker shoot got its name it’s top secret. You’ll have to ask one of the originals...all I know is it has something to do with a bonfire and copious amounts of beverages. Young benchrest shooters should be given their due, if benchrest is to continue into the future. Colorado has its own young shooter representing his state... Eleven year old Brandon McNairy competes as many weekends as his time will allow. He’s been shooting for two years and has competed in South Dakota and Grand Junction in addition to Northern Colorado. He takes his gun safety and Dad’s advice very seriously and likes the whole process of reloading and setting flags. He’s not nervous competing with the guys; he’s just happy having fun. Well Brandon, we’re glad to have you have as much fun as you want!

Shelby County Deer Hunter Assn’s Briar Hail Memorial Sidney, Ohio The second annual Briar Hail Memorial Shoot opened with 25 shooters attending. The weather was typical August, 60’s in the morning and high 80’s or low 90’s in the afternoon. Humidity stayed low once the temperature increased. Saturday shooting started with the Light Varmint 100 yards. Winds were light and variable. Dominic Grunas topped the list with a 0.2118, followed by Jack Neary with a 0.2138 and finishing up the trio was Ted Heindselman with a 0.2356. After an hour break for lunch the Heavy Varmint 100 yards started off with 90 degree temperatures and 5-7 mph winds. At the end of the contest Ted Heindselman top the list shooting a 0.2344, followed by John Petteruti with a 0.2562 and new shooter Patrick Kennedy sporting a very good 0.2586 agg for third.

Tim Humphreys Second Place, Briar Hail Memorial Sunday was almost a replay of Saturday’s weather. Another beautiful day in Sidney Ohio. The Heavy Varmint 200 yards ended with Jack Neary firing a hot 0.1972, followed by Tim Humphreys with a 0.2444 and Dominic Grunas with a 0.2539. After another great lunch served up by the members of the Shelby County Deer Hunters Association, the Light Varmint 200 yards commenced. Tim Humphreys showed all how it was done by firing a 0.2193, followed by Jim Hole with a 0.2470 and Grey Walley coming in third with a 0.2544.

When all the numbers were crunched, Jack Neary won the Two-Gun firing a 0.2480, followed by Tim Humphreys with a 0.2663 and Jim Hole with a 0.2794. Besides winning plaques, the top three were awarded cash prizes. At the end of the day, everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves. The members of the Deer Hunters Association once again rolled out the red carpet for the shooters and hope they will come back for the Eastern Region Fall Finale.

Rachel’s Glen: Second Annual David Reynolds Memorial The “Fat Lady” has Sung at Rachel’s Glen Scripture tells us there is a time for everything and this was the time to call it quits at Rachel’s Glen. We’ve been holding matches for about 22 years and, quite frankly, we’re worn out. Over the years we’ve seen shooters drop out of the game for various reasons. I had to quit because of failing eyesight while others had their reasons. Sadly, we lost quite a few to the grave, the most recent being Dale Rose, one of the most universally liked shooters ever to come to the line. I kept looking for him to show up knowing full well that he wouldn’t be there. It just was not the same without Dale. There are not enough words to say how much we appreciate the efforts y’all have made over the years to come and shoot with us. We tried, and I believe we succeeded in putting on a good match. The one thing that made it as easy as it was the quality target crew that we had. Ted and Deborah Ferrell were unsurpassed at running targets. We were blessed with good, if hot, weather for our finale. As usual we began with Unlimited 10 shot since this was the 200 yard portion of the Southeastern Regional. We had Jeff Thompson (AKA JTIII) come for his first visit to try to take things but Buddy Ross would not be denied. Buddy has been shooting many years but he has been on a tear lately and when he’s shooting it’s almost a contest for second place. In that case JTIII won…second. Steve Lee finished third. Buddy had small group with a .345 (10 shots, remember). Saturday afternoon we shot Heavy Varmint. Richard Milton had donated a special plaque in memory of Dale Rose to be awarded

the winner of the HV. Bart Sauter won it and remarked that he’d rather have that than a HOF point. Dale camped with Bart and Billy at the IBS Nationals and little did any of them know that when Dale left they would never see each other again. Bart had to slug it out with Larry Costa but edged Larry out at the end by .0008 to take first place. Larry did have small group with a .210 and Richard Milton came in third. Bart had a .1763 agg which is extremely good at Rachel’s Glen. Sunday was clear and hot as LV got under way. Larry Costa took first place with a .1770 agg with Bart in second with a .1836 and Billy Stevens was third with a .2196 agg. Billy took small group with a .234. Sporter was the last thing we shot and Buddy Ross won it with a.1756 with JTIII in second with a .1992. Bart was in third but was not close enough to cause Buddy to break out in a sweat with his .2329. Jeff shot a teeny group of .161 to win small group. The Four Gun at 200 yards was won by Buddy Ross with quite a bit of “cushion” with a .2085 agg. Jeff Thompson was in second place with a .2237 and Larry Costa had a .2300 to take third. Steve and Anne Lee had the misfortune of losing their dog, Ralph, this weekend, due to Heartworm medication and Comfortis flea pill interacting. Let this be a warning to check with your vet if you give your dogs these pills. It was a bittersweet time telling everybody goodbye knowing that in all probability our paths wouldn’t cross again but there are no guarantees that any of us will see tomorrow. It’s been fun for all these years and I wish all of you nothing but the best. If you’re in the area you’re always welcome to stop by.

Scarbrough Wins Eastern Region Three-Gun; Krupa Takes Two-Gun Here are the results for the 2012 Eastern Regional Championships held at Holton, Michigan over the Labor Day Weekend. Beautiful weather all three days. Fourty-eight shooters in the bag guns. Some excellent shooting; especially by Jack Neary winning both 200-yard aggregates on Sunday and Jim Hutchison, who shot two ones at 200-yards this weekend...and the timeless ability with the unlimited rifles of George Kelbly was again seen in the Unlimited Class with George winning both the UNL-100 and UNL-Grand. Congratulations to all the shooters who traveled to the Greater Holton Area to shoot this match. Thanks to the Holton crew for another well-run match and congratulations to all who attended and participated.

Oak Hill: The Import & Veteran

Iowa and Oak Hill Gun Club have benefited from Sinclair moving to our state. Our gun club has gained a new shooter from this move and he is well known to most benchrest shooters. He has struggled figuring our the wind patterns/swirls at our club. Give milk enough time and the cream comes to the top. Well, August 19, 2012 was his day at 100-yards showing the boys he has arrived and will be a force to be dealt with hereafter. The IMPORTED shooter and Sinclair employee is Larry Caston, whom you have probably talked with when ordering your benchrest supplies or at the Super Shoot at Sinclair’s tent. I think it’s Iowa’s gain and Indiana’s loss. Welcome to Iowa Larry and congratulations on your first win at Oak Hill.

these things he remains the one you will always have to beat if you win anything at our club. You may know him by JLC Precision Products, Jim Carstensen or just Jim. He just won the Iowa State Championship in July and won the 200-yard agg and light varmint agg in August. Match winners are posted for both yardages. Jim Schmidt and Jerry (chainsaw) King were match directors and did an excellent job. Watch our for the IMPORT and the VETERAN -they’re the ones to beat.

Shooters congregated at Tacoma Rifle and Revolver Club on August 4 to contest the Light Varmint and Sporter to round out the final 2 matches for the NW Regional 4-gun event with the Del Bishop Trophy going to the top shooter. We had good weather for the weekend, with sunny and hot days. Although the conditions on the range varied, they were fairly manageable if one was patient. We started out Saturday morning shooting the 100 yard Sporter. Coming out on top was Rick Graham shooting a .2220 agg Chris Ross shot a .2438 agg to take 2nd , with Steve Kostanich in 3rd with a .2494. Small group went to Rick Graham’s .098 screamer. After lunch we move out to 200 yards. Allen Condiff took control at 200 with a 1st place .2550 agg. Jeff Lewis was hot on Allen’s heels with a .2558 agg for 2nd place, while Rick Graham took 3rd with a .2882 agg. Small group honors went to Mustafa Bilal’s .355 group. After the smoke cleared and the numbers crunched we would find Rick Graham in 1st place in the Grand Agg with a .2551. Second went to Jeff Lewis with a .2740 and 3rd to Allen Condiff with a .2753 Agg. Sunday morning would find us at 200 yards to contest the Light Varmint leg. Rick Graham came out on top, once again by shooting a new Tacoma range record. His agg was a .1615. Yours truly came in close behind Rick with a .1686 agg and 3rd place was Allen Condiff with a .2411 agg. Small group was a .178 screamer shot by Rick Graham. With lunch out of the way and a move to 100 yards, we finished up the weekend. Steve Kostanich really put on a show of marksmanship that left all others wondering what he saw that we couldn’t. Steve shot a possible world record agg at .1414, which earned him 1st place as well. Second went to Allen Condiff’s .2620 and 3rd to Chris Ross with a .2714 agg. Small group went to Steve’s screamer group of a .082. The LV grand agg went to Rick Graham with a .2167. 2nd went

to Larry Boers with a .2261 and 3rd to Steve Kostanich with a.2423. Rick Graham took the 2 gun with a .2359 agg. Allen Condiff shot a .2634 for 2nd and 3rd to Steve Kostanich .2645. With the results from our earlier LV/SP matches tallied up with this weekend matches we would find Rick Graham winning the NW Regional 4 gun. This honor includes receiving the Del Bishop Trophy. Rick’s 4 gun agg came out at a .2281. In second place was Steve Kostanich with a .2583. Jeff Yost took 3rd with a .2796 agg, Larry Boers in 4th with a .2832 agg. and rounding out the top 5 was Jeff Lewis with a .2853 agg. Special thanks to our target and stat crews for making this match happen. Take care and see you all next month.

Weather conditions were sunny and mid 60’s. Winds are always changing and unpredictable when focus is on 1000 yards distances. Anything can happen in the space of 1000 yards. In Light Gun, the small group honors for the day went to Ken Schroeder with a 4.0336 but Norm Matzen carried the group aggregate. In Heavy Gun, Tom Price was not to be

denied and took both the small group, aggregate and the Two-Gun Grand. When it came to score, Norm Matzen took the Light Gun 3-target score with his 133-1X and (wait for it) Tom Price took both the Heavy Gun 3-target score top space as well as the Two Gun High Score. Sloughhouse’s match director extraordinaire, Craig St Claire recently underwent some contention in court as to the giving away of prizes at the Long Range Nationals back in April of this year. Two misguided individuals felt a gift is a right and the courts did what they do best...claimed gifts are just that - gifts and the only requirement should be gratitude. Congratulations to Sloughhouse Benchrest and Craig St Claire for keeping a clear head in light of challenging circumstances and having a gracious heart. Now we can get back to what we do best...long range benchrest!

Precision Rifleman

Range Ramblings, by Tommy Gunn Sometimes, you just need a break from this benchrest stuff so I took one. I started shooting competitive Benchrest rifle back in 2000 or so, but haven’t shot in a registered match in about 2 years. I picked up a couple of new barrels back in January, played around with one a few times, then put all that stuff up for the season and pursued other things – mainly handgun shooting and training. I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with Benchrest and needed a break anyway. I liken it to marrying a stripper. You may initially enjoy life on the wild side, but it can wear you down and leave you wanting a normal life too. In the meantime, I’ve enjoyed training my new dog, Taser, to growl at Obama supporters. They’re pretty easy to pick out for him, they give off an odor of a mixture of granola, t h e ra p y candles, and guilt. With the fall election so close, this is a handy thing to have your dog know how to do! I recently watched a NASCAR highlight reel in which Tony Stewart threw his helmet at another car and I thought, “Man, that’s passion. I love it!” If the helmet had bounced off the car and hit him in the head, it would have been an even more impressive act of futile emotion. It made me think back to a time when I first started competition when I was so ticked off that I had the urge to stand up and launch my rifle down range as far as I could toss it. I could actually feel the flat bottom fore end sliding across my left hand as I pushed forward with my right hand against the butt for all I was worth. A nice twisting motion of my midsection added more velocity to this object of great annoyance. I could see the midday sun glinting off the action as it pir-

ouetted through the air. I watched the muzzle pierce the ground like the SOB had just pierced my heart, and I could feel the release of all that angst in the process. Oh yeah, baby – take that!! Then I came back to reality, stared at an ugly 4 + 1 looking group through the scope, took some deep breaths, and hammer fisted the bench top a couple of times. I’ve since mellowed and learned the hard way that disappointment is a part of competition and the more difficult something is, the more the satisfaction you feel when it all comes together. I sense the same thing in these NASCAR teams. They endure a grueling season, have a huge dependency on their car and tune for a given day, and also need some luck to keep them out of crashes and the pits. Not to mention the personal cost from time spent on the circuit. They speak of the “almosts” and “next times” to the point that you wonder how long they can go on without a big win. Yet they keep showing up with the same determination, race after race. They’re an inspirational crowd. The pressure to perform or get dropped from sponsorship must be incredible. So the rekindling of that sprit, a couple of fresh barrels, and a phone call from a buddy, made me think I had been on the sidelines long enough and that I needed to go to Phoenix for the Nationals this year. Just to see some good people that I hadn’t seen in a long time and to shoot in that crowd. Usually, the nationals invokes this feeling of being Lady Gaga in a meat suit walking around a wolf sanctuary, but not this year. I’ll just go and shoot with low expectations. But I needed a warm up. I thought our local Northern Colorado Firewalker match would be a good one to attend and it would be good to see the local homies as well. I played around with one of those new barrels and it looked like it was trying to shoot, so I signed up. I was assigned a bench next to Don Nielson, Dan Dowling, and Jack Duncan, so right away I’m in the middle of some very experienced friends - I couldn’t hide out on a quiet relay and have at

it. I had absolutely no pressure, but I still didn’t want to look like an idiot in front of these guys. I have been experimenting with my own flat base bullets and they looked promising, so I thought I’d try them. I started out with a .110 group in the Light Varmint 100 match. Cool, a great start! But then I struggled with vertical. Not a drop of two rings down type of thing, but enough to keep from shooting any more teen groups, so I finished that LV 100 yardage with a .2538 agg. I was taking multiple loads out and never found anything to tighten those groups up. Not sure if I just didn’t find the tune, if those bullets are lacking some consistency, or if it was just rust on my part. I tried some boat tails in a known load on the last group and they looked pretty good, so I switched bullets for the LV 200 in the afternoon. Why not? Then I heard that a buddy, Todd Tyler, had just shot an unbelievable .1418 agg and they had grabbed his targets for record committee submission. That’s great for Todd, couldn’t happen to a better guy, but you pretty much know who just won the whole show at that point. So what the hell, that pressure was really gone! That afternoon was spent dialing in the tune and trying to get out alive before a condition switch came along and ruined the group. I was very slow and methodical in my shooting. One, because I hadn’t shot in a long time and didn’t trust myself, and two, I just didn’t feel the need to rush groups. I typically notice the feeling of a knife getting shoved into my back upon that first shot and it doesn’t come out until number five leaves the muzzle. But not this time – I was just happy to be there and enjoying the weekend. I’d shoot a couple in a steady condition, poke around on the sighter to get a new hold off, shoot a few more, and finish with a hold off guesstimate if it didn’t change too much. I wasn’t running many groups in the light but very switchy conditions. Sort of felt like Rosie O’Donnell playing hopscotch on thin ice….

November, 2012 Precision Rifleman After both Light Varmint yardages were shot that first day, Todd was well ahead of the pack with an incredible .1855 combined grand agg for the class and I was in second place. This amazed me as I kept missing the midrange flags at 200 yards and shot a rather large .3026 agg for a grand agg of .2782. Of course the gap between us was huge. I told Don Nielson that I couldn’t shoot a .14 agg in a tunnel. I should have added, “with angels guiding the bullets”… The next morning, we shot the Heavy Varmint 200 event and I took a couple of loads up again. I noticed a lighter load worked better in the morning the day before, and I actually went up in charge as the day progressed and it got to 90 degrees. Seems ass backwards, but that’s my story. Wasn’t too switchy in the morning, just a light right to left, but the velocity was varying slightly, just enough to matter. I didn’t make a big deal of it, I just held a little here and there and kept shooting. The gun was pretty much shooting through some of that and I didn’t want to screw around for an extra small group and take the chance of the wind really changing. I focused on bench manners and shot and waited conditions out, but didn’t look for that perfect state that exactly matched the condition of my last shot. I probably could have shot smaller groups on a few targets, but that was the strategy and I stuck with it. Don Nielson told me I was giving him a heart attack watching me shoot. That, of course, meant I was taking forever. I spent time every target fluffing up my front leather bag and putting a fresh coat of powdered wax on it. Then I’d tighten it, shoot a fouler or two, and tighten it some more. I wanted a smooth drag on it. I noticed that first shot really loosens the thing up, so I kept an eye on it more than usual. Not sure it mattered, but it sure didn’t hurt. Shot a .254, .407, .382, .406, and went up a little in powder for the last and ended with a .252. I didn’t look at any targets along the way, I just shot. I had no idea they were that small. I was shocked when the agg come back at a .1701 at the mid-day break. Wow, never came close to that before, a few .19xs but not a flat .17. Cool, man!!

Todd was still shooting well, but not at that sub teen pace he was yesterday. I talked to him and he said he had laid awake that night in the motel thinking about that record. Only got one hour of sleep. Yep, I would have done that too. So he was tired and probably not as focused as the day before. He’s really coming into his own and will probably do this again, get 4 hours of sleep, and then really kick our butts. One more yardage, the HV100. This one was rough. Winds at 10 to 20 with high velocity switches - we all hate that stuff. I followed the same tune strategy as I did the previous day, going up as it warmed, and picked every target, sometimes not finishing until very late in the 7 minutes. This was a different strategy then the morning. If anything changed, I stopped and saw what it did on the sighter. The penalty for ignoring changes at higher velocity is due cause for launching expensive gear into orbit and I wanted nothing to do with that again! On most targets, there were about 3 conditions that you could pick from - all with a different hold. You couldn’t wait for a time

25

period in which you had one condition to shoot all five shots - the risk was too great it wouldn’t last. I wound up shooting a flat 2 in that stuff, which I was happy to get. I was exhausted by the end. I started to remind myself why I wanted a break from the sport. Felt like Eric Holder tap dancing in front of congress for three months…. So with all that over, we got the final results. Mr. Tyler took 1st place in both yardages and the grand for the LV classes, and I took 1st in both yardages and the grand agg in the HV class with a nice .1886. In the end he bested me in the final 2-gun agg by .2202 to .2334, a difference of only .0134 after that huge lead he amassed. A couple of morals to this story I guess: when you’re out front, don’t let off the gas. And when you’re back in the pack, don’t let off the gas. Humm, I see some similarities…. When I started shooting hand guns in earnest this year, I didn’t think any skills were transferable. But after classes, reading a few books, and

26

Precision Rifleman

shooting a bunch of ammo, I think there are some things in common. Physical manipulation: In handgun shooting, I’ve been surprised at how a finger here or there can really affect the way a gun handles, which you can see on a target. Try shooting a 40 or 45 with your weak hand and notice how much that thing moves under recoil. And not straight up either – it twists. We tame that movement with a two hand hold, but that doesn’t mean it’s not trying to move and interact with our fingers and grip. Most of us shoot bench guns free recoil and don’t touch them, but that front bag sets the ‘tone’ for recoil, so maybe there is more to this then I’ve previously thought. It’s apparent that monkeying with that front bag so much didn’t hurt. I had never before adjusted it after shooting the first shot, but I think there might be something to that. Awareness: I had a lot of problems with jerking the trigger while pistol shooting. I sat in a chair many nights and just manipulated my finger without a gun. We spent time in classes talking about sympathetic movements in which one tendon moving can have an effect on another. If I pretended to be running a trigger just as fast as possible, I could see the tendons in my forearm twitching and that affected my hand. And if I’d been holding a handgun, that bullet would not go exactly where I intended. How do you cure this? By being aware. You can feel your arm do a mini-spasm when your finger goes over a speed limit. Practice pulling your finger with more urgency until you feel and see the spasm. That’s the limit. Then when you push it on the range, you can tell because you’re aware and notice the feeling that you’ve taught yourself. In Benchrest, we only shoot 1.5oz triggers, so that’s not quite as much a problem. But I find I have a habit of sliding my shoulder forward just as I expect the trigger to break and you can’t do that either. But I’m better at being aware now and can feel it. It’s a matter of concentrating, and not kicking yourself in the ass when you do it - just don’t do it again. I think making a big deal out of flinches, spasms, anticipation, only serves to make them worse. Like telling a kid, “don’t strike out”

when he goes to bat, instead of telling him to “get a hit”. We don’t need that negative image floating around. Having said this, it’s no wonder that cops and anyone else scared to death has a heck of a time hitting a target until they get settled down and back in control. I don’t think strictly target shooters truly appreciate this. Of course, a target shooter can be scared in a different way, a mental way, and have a similar performance drop off. It’s just that the targets aren’t trying to kill them.

Stafford wrote a great book, “Surgical Speed Shooting”, and he mentioned that this takes constant awareness and focus to do, even by him, a handgun guru. I thought of this when shooting Benchrest too. All my thoughts were downrange, but yet I was aware when my shoulder moved beforehand, or my hand on the rest adjuster wasn’t as solid as it should be. When it’s working, your focus is downrange but your subconscious is still at work and sends an alarm when something doesn’t feel right. Big similarities here.

Target focus: Something that’s near to awareness is target focus. I’m getting to the point where I can tell if my pistol shot is a decent one when the gun goes off. Jeff Cooper was big at promoting the “surprise break” and I’m starting to really believe this. I was never a fan of Col. Cooper’s ascots, but this bit of advice is golden, in my opinion. Flinching is so much easier to control when you’re thinking about the target, not the gun and all the excitement that ensues after it goes off. In Benchrest we start the reload cycle and begin the decision process as to when to fire again. In pistol shooting we are getting the gun back on target, resetting the trigger, and timing the trigger pull cycle to coincide with having the muzzle point exactly on target again . No wonder we fight nerves and flinches. We go from focus-focus-focus to hurry-hurry-hurry in a fraction of a second. Much like a jacked up NFL defensive end flying off the line to nail Philip Rivers (love it when that happens!) It’s a wonder offsides isn’t called more. I recall in Mas Ayoob’s class, I was having trouble with pulling shots low and left, which is the classic “trigger control” symptom for a right handed shooter. I was thinking about trigger control and all this stuff and not doing a very good job. He then mentioned the story of the University of Texas Bell Tower shooter and I visualized the target as someone who needed to be stopped. As in “this target has just shot 8 people and would love to shoot me next”. My focus shifted from my gun to the target and my groups immediately improved. This is not a one-time fix it and forget it deal either. I have to work on this every time I shoot handguns. Andy

Maybe I’m full of it. Who knows. Maybe I’ll never shoot another set of aggs like this in my life, after these bullets and this barrel is gone. Some of the guys who have shot a lot more of these then me seem to say, “the gun does it and you’re along for the ride”. Perhaps this is true after you get enough experience to reach that Zen state. Personally, I thought it was a lot of work to find that tune and hold it. And to keep that much concentration going, not just for a target or two but for two days. If we can also find a way to reduce pressure, it makes all the difference in the world. I really admire the cool finger Lukes of the world who thrive and perform better under pressure. I think this weekend was a lesson in what removing it can do for one’s performance. When I first saw Michael Phelps before the Olympics, I marveled at how little passion he had going into his events. I predicted he was going to perform terribly. I was wrong. Perhaps his lack of excitement at being there meant he felt little pressure and that actually translated to another excellent performance. Either that or his mom sent a bunch of pot brownies to the swimmer’s dorms and kept Michael accompanied by a security guard to keep him away from them. Might explain why his competition were all blowing bubbles in the pool and he was swimming like a dolphin with a wedgie. Who knows? We’ll see how Phoenix goes. I may come back, get another pup, a closet full of Glocks and 1911s, and take another 2 years off. In the meantime, it sure was cool to experience things I never have before in a Benchrest match. I was not expecting this at

November, 2012 Precision Rifleman all. And isn’t that why we shoot these matches in the first place - to see what happens? Like the lottery, you can’t win if you don’t play…. Well, the doorbell is ringing and Taser is going ballistic. Time to greet the Obama solicitors who made it across the moat with a fusillade of warm honey paint balls and a couple of black bears I keep around for such occasions. Take care… Tommy

Remembering Morris “Butch” Kimmell Craftsman - Competitor - Friend October 14, 1939 - July 6, 2012 Butch was born and raised in Indiana. After a stint in the Marine Corps, he came west and eventually settled at the confluence of the Colorado and Gunnison Rivers in western Colorado. Big and imposing in stature, with a booming voice, everyone tended to listen when he spoke. He was always willing to offer help to those who needed it and not too proud to ask for help if he did. Butch made his living supervising large construction projects. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fly fisherman, drift boat pilot and hunter, as long as his health would allow. He and his wife of forty years, Donna, tied flys and built fly rods commercially for a while. When diabetes took his mobility, he made top quality bullets and quite a few good shooting rifles. His craftsmanship was outstanding in everything he attempted. Until recently, Butch was a trap shooter and goose hunter. For about six years

starting in the late 90’s, Butch and Bob Prather managed the bench rest competition at the Orchard Mesa range in Grand Junction. Butch loved bench rest and the accuracy and camaraderie it provided. He knew and liked everyone and it was mutual. Butch was a fierce competitor and participated in bench rest from the Nationals down to the local events. He especially liked to shoot at Deckert’s Prairie Dog Target Club in South Dakota, often arriving early or staying late to help with the repairs and upkeep of the range, or just to visit. During a visit, he became very solemn and softly said, “I’d give anything to get my gun and go shot just one more yardage with them”. Then he looked out into the distance and smiled, as if reflecting on the past. His ashes are in a grassy field surrounded by majestic mountains and beautiful streams. Our sport has lost a friend.

George was inducted into Eastern Region Hall of Fame as an Honorary member in 2005, but the “old brick-layer” wasn’t satisfied until he shot his way into the Hall. It goes to show that the great shooters never give up.

These bullets are being tested by top BR shooters, with great success. Lou Murdica has won matches in both Florida and California, Don Nielson won Two Gun Aggs three weekends in a row and Tony Boyer shot a 200 yard HV Agg of .1928 at the 2012 East/West match in Missouri.

Please congratulate George Kelbly, Sr into the Eastern Region Hall of Fame as a shooting member as a result of George’s win in Unlimited 100 and the Unlimited Grand at the 2012 Eastern Region Championships held at Holton, MI over Labor Day weekend. Great shooting George!
