Local Boy Makes Good! Lester Bruno Wins the Berger Cactus Classic One hundred and two of the NBRSA’s finest came out to play in the sun at Ben Avery in Phoenix, Arizona and shoot in the best conditions in years. There was no wind to speak of. “For guys that have their gun in tune, with these conditions you were going to do good” said new match director extraordinaire, Art Clegg. The morning started at 42 degrees and COLD, VERY COLD for Phoenicians. The target crew was seen swiftly hanging targets, wiping their noses, donning knitted winter caps and 2-3 layers of clothing just to keep on top of the elements. Starting off the LV 5-shot 100, Ed Adams and Lester Bruno duked it out like a ping pong match with Lester taking small group of 0.118 in match 1. Then Ed bested Lester in match 2 with 0.135. In match 3, Ed held the lead with 0.225 to Lester’s 0.234 only to see Lester shoot another small group of 0.089 in match 4. The two gents were off by 0.005” when Ed eked out the win with an agg of 0.1784 in the end. Third place with a 0.2010 was Larry Scharnhorst, Doc Marsh, shooting his newly-famous marsh action, came in a princely 0.2044 for fourth and rounding out the top five is Aaron “all in the

When talking with Jack Foster, who placed 9th, he said he was mighty happy with his final standing, given that he had run into “issues” and shot a 0.409 in match 3; otherwise, who knows how this would have ended up?! Honorable mention goes to Lowell Frei with small group 0.084. Saturday afternoon they kept the targets close up and shot the HV 5-Shot 100. Temps only warmed up to 52F and the overcast remained but the shooters were none deterred. Lester came back with a vengeance and took first

with a 0.101 to win the first match and the small group. Lester held onto his home field advantage and took match 2 with a 0.141, match 3 with a 0.210 and match 4 with 0.165. By the time the agg was finished, it was pretty darn clear that Lester meant business and he was going to be a force to reckon with. Lester held his lead through match 5 with a 0.170 and won the HV100 aggregate with a 0.1574. Walt Berger was right behind him in second place with a 0.1978, Ralph Stewart was third with 0.2022, Bob Brackney fourth with 0.2094 and fifth was Don Nielson with a 0.2094. Afterwards everyone worked hard and fast to get the flags set for tomorrow’s 200-yard battle as quickly as possible because Walt Berger was hosting another of his famous dinners at 5PM. Nobody wants to be late for the great vittles and free advice that really IS worth far more than it costs! Sunday morning began the Heavy Varmint 5-shot 200 yard battle. Lowell Frei had a bit of bad luck when his gun broke after match 3. Bummer Lowell. Larry Baggett decided it was his turn to start making waves and to give Ed Adams and Lester Bruno a run for their money. Lou Murdica was undeterred

as well as Norm Jeffery and Tom Libby. Larry took first for the aggregate with a 0.2178 and Lou held a respectable second with a 0.2292, Norm Jeffery took third with 0.2316, Tom held fourth with 0.2342 and Lester was fifth with 0.2342. Ed Adams made an appearance with the small group for the HV200 with 0.206. When the first day of Cactus fighting was over, Walt Berger and his family hosted the shooters to a grand feast of Mexican delights followed by a prize giveaway with lots of goodies. Now the truth came out and Lester reigned supreme as the Heavy Varmint Grand Aggregate totals were tallied up. Lester won with a 0.1958. Bob Brackney stealthily took second position with a 0.2227 followed by Norm Jeffery with a 0.2249, Lou Murdica with 0.2295 and Larry Scharnhorst placed fifth with a 0.2424. By Sunday afternoon the Light Varmint 200 was finished up and the gang was ready to call it a day. It’s always such fun coming down to Phoenix to enjoy the sunshine and camaraderie
with all the great shooters; sharing stories and making new memories. George MacDonald took the win for LV 200 with a 0.2862, Don Creach came by and swept second with a 0.2928, Dave Gibson took third with 0.3002, Rodney Brown made a showing in fourth with a 0.3020 and fifth was Gary Ocock with a 0.3112. Lester proved to be on a mission and took the Light Varmint Grand Aggregate win with a 0.2666. Second was Don Creach with 0.2720, third was Rodney Brown with 0.2779, fourth was Ed Adams with 0.2788 and rounding out the top five was Don Nielson with a 0.2822. Ultimately, Lester Bruno proved to be unstoppable taking the 2-Gun win with a 0.2312 with fellow Arizonan, Bob Brackney shoring up second with 0.2640 and Norm Jeffery placed third with 0.2711. Fourth was Bill Summers with 0.2734 and fifth Ed Adams with a 0.2740. Match winners for each match received $50 each donated by Arizona Benchrest Shooters. The winners were:

Schultz & Johnson win at Ojai ...and now a word from Dear Timmy. A column of shooting shenanigans and questionable advice for your reading enjoyment... Dear Uncle Timmy: What are the earliest origins of benchrest? Dear Historian: Ancient cave paintings discovered in the south of France depict human figures squatting and hurling what look like feces at the sides of cliffs. One figure who seems to have hurled the most dung at the smallest area on the cliff wall is shown surrounded by admiring stick figures of other males. In following panels, he is seen holding a leg bone of what may be a mastodon and dancing around a large fire with it. Later cave paintings in other areas show the same leg bone held aloft by other stick figures. This is thought to be the earliest record of benchrest and the origin of the traveling trophy. Dear Uncle Timmy: What makes a great benchrest shooter? Environment or genetics? Dear Mendelian Groupie: Good grief! I sure hope it is genetics. Lord help us if it is the environment of a benchrest match. If that were the case, we would be spawning a generation of bipolar, evil geniuses capable of subjugating the earth with a snap of their fingers. On the other hand, I may have just described the current members of the benchrest hall of fame. Dear Uncle Timmy: What common sense gun control laws would you support? Dear Gun Grabber: Ok, I am not immune to common sense, despite what my wife may say. I look to our federal government and the Department of Homeland Security for guidance in this manner. No individual should possess more than 1.5 billion pounds of powder, primers and bullets hopefully of the same lot. Call me crazy but we shooters must place some reasonable limits on ourselves.
On March 17 we had another nice match in Ojai, California with a great attendance of 17 shooters. A few regulars were not able to make the match but we had a few new shooters with one that had not been out for a while. Hope to see the regulars that were unable to attend make the next match on May 19, 2013. It was a nice day for shooting, although it was quite windy. The first relay had a nice strong wind. The second relay had a little more wind but was switching directions quickly. The dates for the rest of our matches are May 19, July 21, September 15 and November 17. Come by and join the fun. St Louis Rifle Club HTR/VFS WOW, what a day for a match! On March 17, it rained a little at 100 yards and turned to sleet by the time we got to 200 yards. The temperature hovered just above freezing most of the day but as Tom Rippee said “at least his Butches Bore Shine didn’t freeze”. The wind was pretty much out of the east the entire day varying in the range of 10 to 15 mph. We had 7 Hunter shooters and 7 Varmint for Score shooters and we truly do appreciate those that came out for the match under such nasty weather conditions. In the VFS class at 100 yards we had only one competitor with a 250 and that was Galen DeRousse with a 25016X. Following Galen in 2nd place was

Tom Rippee with a 249-14X and 3rd was Dennis Boyet with a 249-13X. This was Dennis’ first ever score match and only his 2nd match ever- it looks like he is catching on pretty fast. At 200 yards Tom Rippee won with a 245-3X edging out Brad Hawkey who shot a 244-6X and in 3rd place was John Ross who shot a 244-3X. In the VFS grand the scores were 1st Tom Rippee with a 494-17- Tom was shooting his 30 BR Farley that was stocked by Terry Leonard and chambered by Sid Goodling, 2nd was Galen DeRousse with a 49325X and 3rd was John Ross with a 49213X. Visalia... Group Results From Dale Wimp Range Sent in by Bill Mellor The first match of the year for Visalia was held in February. We had a good turnout with a few new shooters for a total of 39 competitors. There were also shooters from Canada and Washington state who stopped by for the match on their way to the Berger Cactus Classic. The weather for the weekend was mostly sunny with some tricky conditions to make things interesting and to provide some good practice for those heading south to the Cactus later on. The Light Varmint 100 yard winner was Walt Berger shooting a .1816 aggregate. This was just the start of a great weekend of shooting for Walt. A .2036 aggregate shot by Bill Summers was good for a second place finish. We took a break for lunch which was quite a treat. Sean and the Visalia crew barbequed prime rib and pork loin with all the trimmings. Now that’s a feast a shooter can fully enjoy but after eating lunch, it felt like you needed to find a place to take a nap. George Lozano took over the Light Varmint 200 yard match and shot a .2506 aggregate for the first place trophy. A .2600 aggregate placed Don Nielson in second. The winner of the Light Varmint Grand Aggregate first place trophy was Walt Berger, who shot a .2359 aggregate for the win. Not too far behind with a .2373 aggregate was George Lozano for second. The Heavy Varmint 100 yard first place trophy went to Don Nielson shooting a .1660 aggregate. Lawrence Weisdorn won the second place trophy with a .1882. Walt Berger was heard from again. This time winning the Heavy Varmint 200 yard first place tro-
phy shooting a really nice .1784 aggregate. Tom Price won the second place trophy shooting a .2242. The Heavy Varmint First place trophy was won by Walt Berger; Walt shot an even smaller aggregate than he did the first day - a tidy .2015. Lawrence Weisdorn won the second place trophy with a .2184. It’s no surprise that Walt berger won the two gun first place trophy since he won the Grand both days. Walt had the right load and the conditions figured out and shot a .2187 aggregate for the win. Don Nielson won the second place trophy with a .2348 aggregate and George Lozano placed third with a .2431.

Testing the New Nightforce Competition 15X-55X x 52mm Scope by James Mock
Although the name Nightforce is known throughout the shooting world, it is fairly new. The company that gave birth to Nightforce scopes in 1992 was an Australian company known as Lightforce. They manufactured high quality lighting instruments and the owner Dr. Raymond Dennis decided that as a hunter he wanted the very best in rifle scopes. Therefore, Nightforce optics was born, and they have earned a reputation in the short period of time that is the envy of the world. When I heard of the new Nightforce Competition scope, I contacted their office in Orofino, ID and requested one for testing. Mr. Kyle Brown, Director of Sales and Marketing (he is located in Lavonia, GA) quickly answered my e-mail and told me that he would send me one of the new scopes by the first of March. I received it on February 28th. This scope is so new that the manual that came with it did not include this model. I researched it on the web and found the following: 1) it features the finest ED glass that has multi-layered coating which allows 92% light transmission, 2) the ocular lens is focused by an European fast-focus style eyepiece, 3) this model weighs 27.8 ounces which is 24% lighter than their 12X42X BR model, 4) parallax is adjusted with a side-focus type system 5) windage and elevation adjustments are 0.125 MOA, with 60 MOA total travel, and 5 MOA per revolution, 6) field of
view at 100 yards is 6.9 feet at 15X and 1.83 ft. at 55X, 7) two reticles are offered in this model- the CTR-1 which features a 0.16 MOA crosshair with 0.125 MOA dot., and the other (which I chose) is the DDR model which features a double dot system. (The photo above shows the reticle in use at a 600 yard match.) I quickly mounted the new scope on a Marsh 6mm PPC which I am also testing. When testing scopes, I like to “shoot the square” using the same aiming point and the adjusting the scope up six inches (48 clicks), over 48 clicks, down 48 clicks, and then back to the original setting. Also, I shot this scope at 15X, 25X, 35X, 45X, and 55X to see if there was any point of impact shift when the power was changed. Photo #2 below shows that this scope passed both tests with “flying colors”. It is a pleasure using equipment that functions exactly as stated.
After this initial test, I mounted the new scope on my BAT rifle that is chambered in 6mm Dasher. This is the rifle that I use for 600 yard competition. The photo on the next page shows my old BAT/Leonard with Brux 8-twist barrel. Also, the riser blocks that allow one to convert their Davidson-type bases to Weaver-type rings is from BKL Technologies, Fort Worth, TX. On March the 16th, I travelled the 50 miles to the Howard Prince Memorial range in Pioneer, LA. On this trip I was accompanied by Matthew Hedrick, a 16 year old grandson of my cousin. He had never shot any type of competi-
May, 2013 Precision Rifleman tion before, but he was anxious to try. I loaded enough ammunition for the two of us to shoot the match. With a cool wet range and bright sunshine, the conditions were tough for veteran shooters and new shooters alike. I checked the wind before leaving my home and it was 12 mph from the SW. When the wind is blowing with that velocity before sun-up, one knows that it will be more intense as the day progresses. Although Matthew and I did not set any world records, the scope performed flawlessly. The mirage was very bad, but we both shot with the scope set at 55X for the entire day. He finished in ninth place and I finished second….to another shooter shooting a Nightforce scope. His was the 12x-42X BR model. Nightforce allowed me to keep this scope for 6 months and I plan to shoot it in future 600 yard matches, and perhaps at this year’s Super Shoot. Of course, it will only be used in the HV
(13.5#) class at Kelbly’s because my rifle is at the maximum for 10.5# with a lighter scope. This scope is not cheap. Plan on spending around $2231 & up, but it is as good as one can buy…in my opinion. If you desire more information on this scope or other Nightforce products contact them at info@nightforceoptics.com.
Good shooting, James Mock
Thank you to Turk Takano for the picture of James Mock in the title. All other photos are from Mr. Mock.

2013 Allen Bench Memorial Trophy Hosted by Tri Cities Metallic Silhouette Club
Here at Tri Citiies Metallic Silhouette Club we held the annual Allen Bench Memorial match on March 30. The weather was beautiful for a spring day in the northwest desert country; chilly in the morning and climbing up to the low 70’s. The warm spring days in the northwest usually bring with them switching winds and mirage with gusto. Some of the favorite phrases overheard were, “why did it do that?” “dad gummit” “dad burn it” and “I want my mommy.” A few harsher and more colorful metaphors were heard until Glen Sampson had it figured out and got one in the center of the sighter target then rapid fired the next 5 for

score down range before the condition changed. Five shots in 10 seconds must be a record and it paid off with a awesome 250-17X at 100 yards and 243-3X at 200. The rest of us took our time and tried to figure out the conditions and guess what? Dad Gummit! Rick DeGroat Match Director Rick DeGroat is the new match director for Tri Cities MSA in Washington State. He has taken over the reigns of Jim McConnell. Welcome Rick!

Larry Costa at
Middle Georgia Gun Owners Assn’s
Shamrock XII Seventy-seven shooters competed at the 12th annual Shamrock Shoot in Dublin Georgia hosted by the Middle Georgia Gun Owners Association. Twin Oaks Range has a full service kitchen and an air conditioned dining area. Breakfast and Lunch was served by club members on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The range facilities include 42 camping spots and showers in the bathroom facilities. Friday had some great weather for practice. Also, some reporters came to interview Jim Carmichel for Outdoor Life magazine. Last year in Dublin, Jim shot a world record 0.1441” aggregate in the LV 100. This year only 7 out of 385 targets in LV 100 scored better that Jim’s last year WR agg. Registration went smoothly and the bench assignments were posted at 3:15 p.m. Twenty states were represented and the longest travel was made by Merrill Bergs from Oregon. Having two shooters from Ontario made this an international event. This was the first big shoot for several new bench rest shooters. Bill Griffith, a new shooter from the Atlanta area, used blocks of wood and sand bags as a front rest. Saturday started with Matthew Keller arriving wearing a neck tie. He had left work and driven straight to the Shamrock Shoot. He said “if I take off the tie, I might lose it.” Matthew also sang the National Anthem for the opening ceremonies. Having him sing is becoming a wonderful new tradition for the Shamrock. Thank you Matthew. The weather on Saturday cooperated. It rained only during the lunch break.
Sunday was a different matter. There were thunder storms all night which continued into the morning. The start of the first relay was delayed one hour. At 9 a.m. the storms had passed and a few sprinkles were seen for the rest of the morning. With three relays and a super-fast target crew the days ended early despite the late start on Sunday. The challenge in Dublin is the unpredictable weather. Larry Costa, (pictured above with wife, Dee) and Jim Carmichel were battling it out on Saturday to see who would win the Two Gun. Sunday morning Buddy Ross got in the mix by winning the HV 200 with a 0.1765” aggregate. Sunday afternoon, Larry shot a 0.2057” aggregate in the LV 200. Larry won the Light Varmint Grand with 0.1996”. Jim won the heavy varmint Grand with 0.2013”. Larry Costa won the Two Gun with a 0.2113” grand. Buddy Ross had second place with 0.2131” and Jack Neary had 0.2186” for third place. Steve Lee added that Larry’s score beat Buddy’s by .0018”; literally one group made the difference. Fourth and fifth place went to Jim Carmichel and Bob Hammack with 0.2197” and 0.2444” respectively. The smallest group of the Shamrock was Mark Engle with 0.084” on HV100 with Kip Jones having a slightly larger group of 0.088” for LV100. Jerry Sharrett wrote, “I shot beside Larry and it was amazing some of the stuff he shot through and got tiny-tiny groups. The first day I was between Kip Jones and Larry and our targets looked like the Morse code for “R”. Dot, dash, dot!!”

Precision Rifleman On the left is Buddy Ross. Why is Buddy’s smile so big? Take a look at the picture on the right. It’s a Thing of Beauty. Buddy Ross’ 200-yard target was the best shot over the two day event. I believe that constitutes reason enough for a big smile. It’s also part of the reason there was only a .0018” difference in the two-gun results between Larry and Buddy. Good shooting, Gentlemen. Here’s another question for you...Since the matches are held outdoors, why are the shooters all gathered around the covered loading shed? The answer is on the right. Soggy, soggy & more soggy. Left: The Awesome Threesome. Jack Neary, Larry Costa & Buddy Ross Right: Our Canadian shooter, Dave Abbott takes a break.
It may look like Jack Neary on the left is having a shoot-out with Brad Lewis on the right, but it’s just your favorite editor having “a little sport of her own.” Brad is preparing to let off a shot downrange during practice and Jack is testing Harley Baker’s rifle during the Shamrock practice session. They both survived both the Shamrock match as well as the deluge the weather brought forth. Hopefully I will survive publishing this! The photos were submitted by Dee & Bill Griffith to whom I am very grateful. The peanut gallery commentary is the fault of your editor.

Risk Management by Rod Brown I recently had a respectable finish at the Cactus due in part to a shooting style I call Risk Management. It seems like most of the shoots I attend have an invisible helicopter hovering just over the flags about mid-range. Tails point every direction at the same time and yet someone always seems to come up with a Tiny Group that seems to defy the laws of nature. Years ago Ed Adams told me to “forget about the small groups and just shoot what the conditions will give.” It made me start looking at the flags in a different way. Sunday afternoon (LV200) at the Cactus this year was sort of like that. After three yardages of relatively consistent conditions, we had a hard left-to-right blow that was pulsing and switching directions enough to make the scorers’ job pretty easy. I was testing that condition by launching two rounds as fast I could shoot them at the lower left sighter and they often ended up on 2 inches apart on either side of the right bull. There didn’t seem to be a change in the flags and the hard blow had a lot of variation in it. So, how do you get through this without shooting an agg-wrecker?
My shooting log has a large, hand-written reminder on it that “I can always shoot a big group fast”. Knowing that, on the blustery days it is sometimes good to just watch the flags for awhile. Rather than waiting for the flags to all line up, I will try “calling my shots” on the sighter to see if I can find a low risk way to get out of the match. Start by looking for some individual signal in the field in front of you and try a few shots keying off that signal. A few years ago, I shot a nice teen agg in a gusty 15-25 mph wind. The whole flag field stood straight out green, but I noticed that about every 30 seconds, my front two flags would sometimes completely flip from green to orange usually for less than a second. The hard blow wasn’t going to give anything less
than a .3, so I tested that little reverse and the shots stayed together. I ended up with a teen agg by shooting completely heads up and just snap-firing whenever those front flags reversed. I shot one of my few screamers at the Chippewa in Ohio a few years ago in the warm-up to the Super Shoot. The Chippewa range is like a bowl carved in the forest, open in the back and set nicely for a vortex of wind to swirl in. The group was shot with the front flags blowing hard orange, and the back flags were blowing hard green. As the invisible helicopter slid back and forth the two middle flags would swap to keep you on your toes. Even though the field looked like a mess, keying off the moment when second flag made a quick swap to the correct direction lead to a nice small group. Managing the risk can also be about noting how much extra width you get in the group shooting the lefts and rights versus the extra height you get shooting heads and tails. If conditions are blustery, I will usually try to pick a head or tail wind to run the group in. The caveat to watch out for is that little change from 11 to 1 as a head/ tail switches from orange to green. That color shift can be good for two

bullets of vertical, but even that is often better than 1½ in the left or right pulses. At that Cactus LV200 I noticed that every few minutes there was a complete reverse that lasted only lasted 5-10 seconds. So while the hard blow showed a stable condition, the reverse offered a chance to shoot a tail wind. I made it work by forgetting about fine point aiming, and just running 5 shots as fast as I could shoot when the reverse came around. My aiming point was probably varying by a half inch, but the bullets stayed nearby and I finished without breaking the inch barrier and actually got a small group on one match. Shooting a fast switching tailwind quickly was a lower risk strategy than carefully aimed shoots in the steadier blow. Misjudging an intensity change in a tail wind can add a bullet of vertical to the group, while misjudging the same change in the crosswind can add a bullet of vertical plus an inch of horizontal. Placing well is usually more about small mistakes than small groups.

Introducing the “Oh, So Cool” Screamer Patch! Shooter Name Street Address, City, State, Zip Code Date & Range Class, Yardage & Group Size
With the loss of Precision Shooting we also lost our screamer patch partner. I miss Dave Brennan. He was a great Editor for many years and served the shooting community well. The screamer patch is such a fun program that NBRSA, through Precision Rifleman, just had to do something to salute these fine shooters. Enter the “Oh, So Cool” screamer patch designed by my favorite benchrest shooter of all time, Rod Brown. The order has been placed and there should be stock on hand at the business office by summer, so now is the time to review the application process so you will know what to do when you shoot one. The Official Screamer Patch is awarded for exceptional groups shot in competition. Your group must be fired in a registered NBRSA match with a moving backer. The backer requirement is removed only for 600 & 1000-yard matches. There is a limit of two (2) patches per year for any member. The screamer criteria is as follows:
5-shot group .450, 10-shot group .699 600-Yards 5-shot group .99” and under 1,000-Yards 5-shot group Light Gun 2.99” and under 5-shot group Heavy Gun 4.99” and under
100-Yards 5-shot group .099; 10-shot group .199 200-Yards 5-shot group .250 10-shot group .449 300-Yards
Please do not phone in requests. It’s my first time with this program and it will be easier to keep track of things by mail or email. Please include the following information in your request:
Thanks for reading. I’m looking forward to seeing a lot more screaming eagles around the matches.

On March 23, the Okie Shooters got together to begin the 2013 season. Weather temperatures were cool; about 50 degrees and light winds of about 9 mph and noon and 6 mph by 3pm. The easy breezy conditions came just in time for the 200-yard Light Varmint Regional and first leg of the Oklahoma 3-Gun, which starts at noontime. We had been practicing from 10AM until 11:30AM getting ready. Because of age and health issues, Don Perdue was not able to attend this match, which was sad because Don is an Okie faithful and all around great guy. We’re rooting for you, Don. Here’s the scoop on the match so you don’t feel left out... It drizzled early in the match but did not rain. We had 21 shooters with 4 new guys to the Luther range from Texas. Scharnhorst spanked us at 100 with a .226 agg followed by Darrel Loker with .277, and then John Dumas with .2778. The 200-yard was a little tighter. Reneau .2117, Roby .2119, Hargadine .2432. For the grand aggregaate, it was Cale Roby .2523, Larry Scharnhorst .2587, Joe Hargadine, .2662. Small group at 100 went to Gary Bristow .095, and 200 yards was Joe Hargadine .189. There are not many zeros at 100 or ones shot at 200 at Luther.

Mike Walker It is with great sadness that we report the passing of this great legend. Just last month Rod had the honor of chatting with Mike about his career and creations and shortly after April’s issue went to print, we were notified Mike had passed on.

Speedy Gonzalez writes, “The man that gave us the Remington 700 & the 40X and was an instrumental driving force in the development of the game of benchrest passed away this past week. Mr. Walker passed away last week at 101 years old. He had fallen and broke his hip, they put him under the knife for a new hip; he survived the surgery and was doing well then 3 or 4 days after he passed peacefully in his sleep at the hospital. He treated me like a son and always took the time to answer any question I had. We are diminished.” Turk Takano first met Mike at the Firearms Convention in 1974 in Houston and shot with him at the Nationals and Super Shoots from 1973 to 1999. Thank you to Turk for providing us this great picture of Mike to share with the membership. Mike Walker will indeed be missed.
