My First Trip on the US World Team First of all I would like to thank everyone that helped to support our USA Team for the trip to Australia; it would have made the trip much more difficult without the support of these people. I was very fortunate to make the team that went to Australia this year and it has been a great experience for me. As a regular shooter, it shows that some of us can have a shot at this also. (I know me, regular?) I could not thank enough the Australian officials that organized and ran the match while we were there. Talking to several of them during the competition, they were very interested to see some of the best shooters in our sport shoot their range as they, themselves had trouble reading the conditions. Shooters from all over the world were having trouble with what seemed to be a ghost condition that moved bullets without revealing from where it came. Case in point, I had four bullets in a nice group at two hundred yards, then one bullet goes left to Chicago and I couldn’t see why. I thought I was missing something, but the best thing that happened was Tony Boyer, top shooter in our sport, was watching me through the spotting scope and told me he never saw anything that would have moved the bullet like that. Those words were a great comfort to me to know that I was doing the best I could under these conditions. When shooters complete their equipment list many people disclose what they plan to shoot. On this trip, the teams were changing loads faster then they change their socks, so the planned equipment list goes out the window. Some are secretive and guard their information saying that their load won’t work for anyone else. Either way, in the end, it all boils down to what happens when you pull the trigger. Benchrest is not usually a team sport. At WBC12, I was very impressed at how the Team came together and worked with each other on loads, bullets and shooting conditions. Most of the USA Team members were shooing Vihta Vuori 133. I remember listening to all the team members discussing what load they were shooting. It was like watching a chemist or a mad scientist mix-

ing up a bullet pill..adding a couple of grains here, or taking away some to get that number on the scale they wanted to shoot. All I know is they were packing in the powder. They may have taped two drop tubes together to get it in (not really). I believe I was the only one of all the countries that was shooting my original 600 rounds of 8208. While everyone was setting up when we arrived, I was pulling bullets to get the powder out and into my powder bottle being very careful not to spill a grain, as I didn’t know if I would have enough powder to make it through the competition. As it turned out I did have enough and actually had about 1/8th of the bottle left at the end of the match. Usually I am the one that is messing with other shooters trying to lighten up the mood as most of the shooters know or just think I am nuts. Well, at this competition most of the team members seemed to be in a competitive mode but still relaxed enough to have a good time in the loading building. They even turned the tables on me and took the opportunity to photo bomb me while I happen to take a meditation break (nap) between matches as it was sort of like the Super Shoot having about an hour between each time you went up to the line. All in all it will be something I will re-

team together and all the paper work that it took to get into Australia. Trust me on this. We as a country do NOT want this to happen in the USA; it is a nightmare of paperwork and regulations for gun owners to travel to Australia. A personal note of thanks to John Loh for making a special front rest with the inscription “World Benchrest Team 2013 Sydney Australia” so I could sell it at the competition to help me with my expenses. Twelve Questions for WBC12 To pay tribute to one of my favorite editors, Dave Brennan, I’ve taken the liberty of sending out twelve questions for the USA Teams that attended WBC12. I’ll cover the responses I received from Teams A,B & C, but let’s start with the winner of this event; humble Texas nobility, Sir Charles Huckeba. (I can see his eyes rolling as I type this sentence.) 1. How long have you been shooting? I’ve been benchrest shooting about 25 years. 2. What other shooting sports do you do? Nothing. Just benchrest. I used to shoot score but at that time there was insufficient interest so I gave this up. 3. What are the 3 top benchrest moments of your career? Getting in the Hall of Fame and winning WBC12 were the biggest highlights. The third was at the Phoenix Nationals in years past, I shot 5 out of 8 groups that measured 0.3999 at 200 yards. 4. How did you do that?

The barrel was an outstanding barrel; I haven’t had one since. Anyone who doesn’t believe in a screamer barrel, they are out there. When you get one, it’ll make you look really good and when you lose it, it will make you look really bad. 5. When did you first figure out you might win the WBC12? I really didn’t realize it. I knew I was shooting well and on the second match of the last day I thought I might just pull this off. I didn’t press things; I just focused on not making a blunder. I knew it would be close at any rate. 6. What were your first thoughts when you realized you won? I still couldn’t believe it. I was as shocked as anybody else; there were several shooters who were very consistent. I was just lucky I had a good gun and things just fell into place. I was happy with my groups and happy with my aggs and everything felt good. There were 4-5 shooters there that consistently shoot better than I do that could have possibly won be-

cause they were both shooting well but bad luck struck. 7. How did you handle the “ghost conditions” that seemed to plague the participants? I think it happened to everyone shooting; in my last group the fifth shot flew out and I thought I had shot myself in the foot but everyone seemed to have this problem. Don’t know if it was the conditions or what but most if not all of the teams seemed to be experiencing the same problems. In my experience on ranges there can be something that you’re just missing. The Australians had the same problem as well as New Zealand and South Africa teams. 8. Did you change your load like everyone else? If so, what was the trick? I shot 30.2 of VV133 at 200 yards; I shot hot loads too throughout the matches. the first day 30 grains, second day 29.4 to 29.5 because the humidity was higher and it was cooler. I’d try 2-3 loads prior to the match at warm up and then used what worked best.

9. Do you think living in Texas (windy conditions) helped you win this event? The wind does help. If you shoot in wind, it takes the worry out of pulling the trigger. I’d rather shoot the wind than calm conditions because its just what I’m used to. 10. With all the excitement were you able to concentrate or were you “in the zone.” When I’m shooting decent, I try to load and shoot the best I can. I don’t stress myself out about shooting a small group. I never go to the line trying to shoot a little group; I just focus on shooting the best group I can each time. I never try to pressure myself up. I was calm because I knew I had a good gun. 11. Did jet lag affect you? It affected me a little going over there but not near as bad as going home. It didn’t zap me. You could tell for a couple days that it took it’s toll for a few days. Coming home was a total disaster for me. 12. How did you get the nickname, “Sir Charles Huckeba”? started that but I think it was Jeff Thompson who put that on me. The first time was when I won the Nats in Phoenix and one at Raton one time Ron Hoehn might of said that. When I hear it I tell them then can stop that any time. 12 1/2. Any last comments you want to share? Everybody on that team shook hands and told me how glad they were for me. The South Africa team is getting stronger every year; as well as Australia and New Zealand. They want to beat the US and they are working on that for sure. Everybody, all of the officials, I personally congratulated everyone who ran the range as they did a great job. Everybody was extremely nice and I enjoyed visiting with them. Moving along to the USA Team responses, following are answers from Team C: Todd Tyler (TT), Team B: Lee Hachigian (LH), Team C: Tom Libby (T3) and Team A: Gene Bukys (GB). To shorten this article, I’ve affixed their initials next to their responses... 1. What were the temps/winds each

day during the match? TT: Monday hot and windy. Tuesday was dead calm all day. Wed hot and windy. One day was overcast with some sprinkles. There was a lot of smoke from the fires;they were real close to us. LH: The temperatures varied by day, ranging from 75 to 94 degrees. The humidity started the day in the 50% range but quickly dropped to the 20% and lower. The range was cut into a side of a large hill, which gave the range bowl like conditions. You would normally see flags up range and down range moving in opposite conditions. The red flag conditions (right to left) gave me a large amount of vertical, so I focused on heads winds and green conditions (even if they were hard pushes). T3: It was the hottest October Sydney has had. The humidity was higher than the temperature in the morning 68 to 72% down to mid 45% later in the day. GB: The match started on Monday and it was about 68 degrees in the morning going to 90 degrees by mid afternoon with humidity, if I believe what I saw on the gauge, down in the single digits like 2%. I didn’t think it could get that dry, but that’s what my mickey mouse dealy said. Winds were mild but quite switchy. Tuesday was overcast most of the day; winds were light to non-existent and temps were a balmy 80 degrees or so. Wednesday apparently a front of some kind came through. The wind was howling; probably gusts to 30 mph and temps hi 60’s in the AM and low 90’s in the afternoon Thursday, when we arrived, the range was covered in smoke and I later learned that the fires were only a kilometer away from the range. They did take the time to make sure that everyone knew what the evacuation plan was and we shot all day without incident. Much cooler in the morning. The only day I wore shorts to the range. Big mistake as the wind had lost some of its intensity though it was still blowing quite a bit and was quite switchy. My guess is that the intensity was half of what it had been on Wednesday and by midday I was comfortable in my shorts; probably high of 80F and humidity 30% by midday. Friday was 10 shot 200 yards. Wind was back to what it was like the first day; 10-15 mph gusts and plenty switchy. It was no trigger pull for sure

The hotel was very good, eating was within walking distance and shopping was a ways away. The Casino was next door and had some great restaurants; only $100 for 4 of us to have 4 dishes and a drink. GB: The Aussies were great hosts. They went out of their way to make us feel welcome and to help us out in any way. It’s a shame how difficult the government makes holding international shooting competitions. 12. Share any insights or words of wisdom you learned. TT: It was a great experience that I will remember forever. LH: Team events are much different than individual events. It puts a lot of pressure on you. I made the mistake of licensing (in July) one of two rifles that I shot at the NBRSA National’s in Fairchance. Unfortunately, the rifle that I shot the 0.16 agg in HV was not the one I picked to take to Australia. As we all know, rifle, action and barrel must all work together to shoot small. I would recommend for others that get this opportunity to license all the rifles they may take and then you would be good no matter which combination of barrel and action works the best. T3: Yes, in 2016 the World will be held in New Zealand and if you are going to try and make the team, better start saving your money NOW. The other days if you waited the mirage might clear up enough to shoot a group, but not always. LH: At 200 yards, the mirage was so bad at times you couldn’t shoot the condition that held the best. T3: You could see mirage at 100 but it was heavy at 200. With my 40 power March scope it was ok for me. I like to use the mirage. GB: At times the mirage was severe enough that the March Scope shooters complained that they couldn’t see the rings. I was shooting a Leopold, so I had no problems. 10. How was the traveling back and forth over such a distance? Do you think the travel affect your performance? TT: Not really. LH: No problem. T3: Travel was not a factor. It was like a class reunion, especially going home after the shoot. Everybody had a great time ragging on each other, especially when the bus driver stopped at the store on the way back. GB: Traveling over long distances (more than 3-4 hours) in an airplane is never fun and Australia is an additional 14 hours after taking the 3 hour flight from Houston to LA; however, we arrived in Australia 4 days before the match started, so we had plenty of time to decompress. 11. How were the Aussie hosts? Did you feel welcome? Were accommodations and transportation punctual and easily available? TT: The Aussies were perfect. I felt welcome the whole time. 2013 Varmint For Score Nationals October 15-16: Short Range VFS The competition this year was as fierce as the wind on the first day. At 100 yards points were dropping everywhere except for only a handful of shooters. Lou Murdica, shooting his new 30BR for the first time in a registered match won at 100 yards with a 250-19X. In second was local shooter Ron Carter with a 250-17X. Ron is the only shooter who shoots without wind flags. As you can see in the pictures he has a beard which I am convinced is wired to some wind sensors with the way he shoots. And in third coming down from Wyoming is Raymond Becker scoring a 250-13X. The long range portion of the Nationals started on the third day. We began at 200 yards with very unusual conditions that lasted for the duration of the week. Light switchy winds and then all of a sudden dead calm. Which relay you were on really made a difference on the scores. Shooting his way into first place and a pending world record was Lou Murdica with an awesome 250-14X. Dan Zaccanti came in second scoring a 250-11X. And once again Raymond Becker in the top three with a 250-9X. On a side note to the shooters who had to leave early due to family members passing away. You were missed very much but family comes before our favorite past time.

A meeting was held at the 2013 VFS Nationals in Las Vegas, NV on October 16, 2013. There was a list of things the Varmint For Score shooters had questions about. They would like to see them clarified and/or set up. Following are the items of discussion: 1. One representative from all the Regions to form a Score Shooter committee. You must be an active shooter in Hunter or VFS to be part of this committee. 2. The Score Shooters Rules to be part of the NBRSAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Rule book under its own heading/section. 3. Have a VFS, World Records and Two Gun Hall of Fame set up now instead of years down the road. This way we wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to search for records later just so we can give points to a shooter years later. 4. Following is a proposed scoring set up. Its goal is to give everyone a chance to earn points. It is based on the score rule National Trophies; section 7, paragraph D: Points would be awarded for the 2012 and 2013 VFS Nationals, and world record points for those standing on December 31, 2012 and December 31, 2013 at which time all the categories should be filled. From this point forward, every time a record is reset. The Two Gun points to start at the first two gun nationals on August 4, 2014 in Casper, WY. This would establish (4) four separate categories you can shoot for. Once you have been inducted into the Hall of Fame in a category, you are in. Now you would just keep earning points to get to the top. 1) Hunter, which has its own point system 2) VFS 3) Two Gun 4) World Records Points would be given to the top (5) five places in the following categories: 100, 200, 200, 300 matches 100, 200 agg 200, 300 agg 100, 200, 300 agg 100, 200, 200, 300 agg each world record set Proposed Points awarded: World Records would receive 6 points each. Yardages would receive 5 pts for first

2013 VFS Nationals Meeting Minutes place, 4 pts for second, 3 pts for third, 2 pts for fourth and 1 pt for fifth. In VFS aggregates and Two Gun, 6 points would be awarded for first place, 5 pts for second, 4 pts for third, 3 pts for fourth and 2 pts for fifth place finish. To qualify to be inducted into the Hall of Fame you would have to earn 50 points in the categories listed above. This would require you to place in at least two different Score National Matches. 5. At a National or local event that shoots consecutive days, to qualify as a 100, 200, 200, 300 floor mate could the,100, 200, 300 world record be set using your long range 200, 300 agg and add in the 100 yd from your short range match? They currently use only short range agg and add in the 300yd score from your long range match. My understanding for this is by using the short range and adding the 300 to it is to make it so every one has a equal and fair chance,(no second chance/practice day at a better 200 yard score). A question was asked whether there could be a 100, 200, 300 yd record for both short and long range. This would have to be addressed by the Board. The next six items were asked to be clarified: 1. When a bullet hole is outside the sighter bull and not touching the vertical or horizontal extension line, how is it scored? The answer is from the rules. Current score rules off the NBRSA web page is. page 2, #3, part g. There shall be no penalty of the first shot of each match if it strikes outside the sighter bull area if it is reported to the Range Officer before firing another shot. Any shot outside of and not touching the sighter bull after the first shot will be counted as the score of the nearest record bull. However, a shot in the area to the right of the sighter box or above the sighter box that still touches the extensions of the surrounding lines of the sighter box shall be considered as sighter shots. Old rule book No. 37 page 79, #4, part g. There shall be no penalty of the first shot of each match when it hits outside the sighter bull, if it is reported to the Range Officer before firing another shot. Any shot outside of and not touch-

ing the box of the sighter bull after the first shot on the target will be counted as the score of the nearest bull. However, a shot in the area to the right of the sighter box that touches or is below an extension of the top horizontal sighter box line will be considered a sighter shot. A shot in the area below the sighter box that touches or is right of an extension of the left vertical sighter box line will be considered a sighter shot. So if I understand and am reading it correctly per the new rule, only shots to the right of the target are to be considered sighter shots and to the left and below the sighter box that don’t touch the sighter box lines will be counted as zero scores for number 1 or 5 bulls. 2. Two or more shots on a bull when no cross fire occurred? Answer from the rules. Current score rules off the NBRSA web page is page 2, #3, part d. Penalties. When an identifiable crossfire occurs on another competitor’s target, the low value or identifiable shot shall be transferred to the offender’s target and a penalty of one (1) point shall be deducted. If the crossfire is a 10-X, the X score shall be null and void. The point will be deducted from the “10” score and the “X” will not be counted. Should the same competitor crossfire again on the same target, then he/she shall receive no points for that crossfire or subsequent crossfires. The competitor who crossfires must not then shoot the corresponding bull on their own target. To do so may result in a disqualification, if it is determined that this was an attempt to conceal the crossfire. Any open bull, not a crossfire shall be scored as a 0. If there is more than 1 shot on a record bull, only the lowest score on that bull will count. Old rule book No. 37 Same as above. 3. How long do you have to challenge a score on a target? Answer from the rules. Current score rules off the NBRSA web page is page 3, #4, part d. At the end of the match, the aggregate score will be posted. The time of posting will be noted and 15 minutes will be allowed for protest of scores. Old rule book No. 37 Same as above. 4. On a proposed cross fire shouldn’t the referees go down range to make the de-

termination that there was a cross fire? I wasn’t able to find an answer in the current score rules off the NBRSA web page and Old rule book No. 37. A suggestion was to add a sentence that the referees need to go and verify that it was or was not, by reviewing both the backer and the target before either are removed or backer holes are covered. Then they report to the range master there findings. This is based on the fact that that’s how shooters have seen it done at other hunter national matches. 5. Could there be a blank sheet of paper placed between the targets so a shooter that is having trouble getting on paper has a place to shoot. This way target frames don’t get shot unnecessarily and it’s a penalty free spot to shoot. This would not be a rule but placed in the rule book as a suggestion so it could be done if the range has the room/space. 6. Proper reading/use of the reticle for scoring targets. It seems that some scorers use the inside of the ring to determine whether or not a shot is good. Which is to be used; inside or outside of the ring? Could there be a proper use procedure added to the rule below? Current score rules off the NBRSA web page is Page 3, #4 f. All score targets shall be scored with the official NBRSA scoring reticle. If you have information for the clarification to the above items, wish to give constructive input to the discussion items above,or if you have questions about any discussion items / score rules please send it to me. Rogue Valley 600-Yard Inaugural Event Brings Crawford A New World Record! October 20, 2013

Jackson County Sports Park Shooting Complex’s Historic Camp White Rifle Range hosted its first 600 yard NBRSA registered match. When the gates opened at 7:00am the thermometer stood at 39°F and it didn’t take long for things to warm up. Competitors from Washington, Oregon, California, and Nevada provided the heat. The Light Gun Relays score belonged to John Crawford of South San Francisco, CA shooting a World Record 147 with an X-count of 5! Placing second was Larry Kahle of Corvallis, OR shooting 145 with an X-count of 3. Following Larry was Billy Copelin of Tacoma WA (Long Range Hall of Fame member) shooting 145 with an X-count of 2. The Light Gun Relays group was owned by John A. Johnson of Grants Pass, OR with an average group of 2.2457”. Placing second was John Crawford grouping at 2.3437”. Third place belonged to Billy Copelin grouping at 2.4820”. The Heavy Gun Relays score saw John Crawford just nudge Bob Dorton of W. Sacramento, CA 270 to 269; each with X-counts of 3. Third place belonged to Everet Smith of Mt. Shasta CA with 264 and an X-count of 1. The Heavy Gun Relays group was also owned by John A. Johnson with an average group of 3.0213”. Placing second was Robert Hoppe of Reno, NV with 3.5633”. Third place belonged to Billy Copelin grouping at 3.6437”. Ahh the Aggregates: The Two Gun score had John Crawford on top with a LG score of 149 and a HG score of 270 making an aggregate of 419 with an X-count of 9. Following John was Bruce Bangeman of Roseburg, OR with a LG score of 144 and a HG score of 264 making an aggregate of 408 with an X-count of 7. Third Two Gun Score belongs to Everet Smith with a LG score of 140 and a HG score of 264 making an aggregate of 404 with an X-count of 3.

Following John was Billy Copelin with a LG group of 2.4820” and a HG group of 3.6437” making an aggregate of 3.0628”. Third Two Gun group belongs to Bruce Bangeman with a LG group of 2.6533” and a HG group of 3.8350” making an aggregate of 3.2442”. All of the top shooting competitors were awarded plaques or medals sponsored by Whips Crushing & Scrap Metal of White City OR – Thanks Gary. Drinking water was sponsored by the Tuesday Morning Rocking Chair Shooters of Medford OR – Thanks Bob. At the completion of the event award ceremony Bruce Bangemen presented Phil Grammatica, Match Director and RVSSA Long Range facility administrator, with a plaque recognizing his and the RVSSA support personnel for their tireless efforts for the NBRSA members and event. Phil Grammatica invited all of the competitors to give feedback on improvements that might make the facility and/or event better and to come back for the upcoming NBRSA 600 yard events.

Greg Wilson Wins 2-Gun & Dan Lutke is Shooter of the Year November 2-3 This was our last match of the year for Sacramento over the weekend. We had 15 shooters on Saturday and 16 on Sunday. The weather was cold and windy; Saturday began at 50 but warmed up quickly to a high of 77 with a strong wind. Sunday began a chilly 48 and only reached 65 with wind. Most shooters wore jackets all day. In the afternoon the wind was very twitchy and hard to read. The roof vibrated from the wind; a good indicator not to shoot. We began Saturday shooting all 200-yards and all 100-yards on Sunday. Shooter of the year would come down to the last yardage and the grand. A big thank you to Greg Wilson for being the match director the last 11 years. Greg has decided to step aside and pursue some other hobbies. Sahuaro 1000-Yd Benchrest November in Tucson is pretty hard to endure. It was sunny (of course) and in the early morning the temperatures were in the low 50’s, but by noon, we were enjoying the high 70’s to low 80’s. It was a good turn out with 10 shooters in light gun and seven in heavy, Including rifle maker John Lazzaroni who was testing a couple of his products at the 1,000 yard range. Match director Karl Hunstiger had us pulling triggers by 8:00 A.M. Conditions in relays one and two were reasonably good with winds in the 5 to 10 mile per hour range, but with lots of mirage and thermals. But as often happens at any range, you just never know. In relays three and four, the conditions improved dramatically. In the pits we were amazed to watch the dust clouds, from the bullet impacts on the berm, going straight up and then dissipating. New to the Sahuaro range was Hal Byrd who took first in both Light Gun score and Light Gun group. Obviously, Hal is not new to long range shooting, having been doing the 600 yard game for years. That experience paid off this weekend. In Heavy Gun, it was long time Sahuaro shooter Steve Everson who won both score and group, outclassing the rest of the competition. Shelby County’s Fall Finale by John Petteruti Twenty-five shooters met at the Shelby County Deer Hunters Association on October 19th and 20th to finish the Eastern Region’s schedule with the Fall Finale. The weather was mixed with Saturday being cold with rain with light winds and Sunday being bright and sunny but winds that started at 9 mph in the morning and ended up at 20 mph in the afternoon. The results were quite a bit different for each day. The range was opened for business at 8:30 am. It was to be a day of some really small hole shooting. Steve Theye took first in the 100 Yard Light Varmint with a blistering .1682 aggregate followed by Melvyn Newramsky with a .2112 and Jack Neary with a .2120. Small group was shot by Margaret Jerrett, a member of SCDHA. Margaret put an impressive .090 hole on the paper. Following the morning shoot an hour lunch break was taken. The Association’s kitchen turned out Chile, burgers, Chile Dogs, pies, cakes and other great things to eat. This after serving a great breakfast of biscuits and gravy in the morning. Doesn’t get much better than that! More small groups followed in the afternoon with Dale Dillingham winning the 100 Yard Heavy Varmint with a hot .1954, followed by Jack Neary at .1986 and Jerry Jerrett at .2138. Jack Neary’s .100 won the small group.The small group phase of the Fall Finale was not over.

Sunday morning opened bright, sunny and windy. At 200 yards the whole character of the Shelby County range changes drastically. The 200 Yard Heavy Varmint was won by Ted Heindselman who shot a .2593 followed by Paul Whitt at .2607 and Dominic Grunas at .2692. Fred Moreo shot a .255 to take the small group honors. Greg Walley took top honors for the 200 Yard Light Varmint by shooting a .2270 while Ted Heindselman took 2nd with a .2382 and Joel Nader, 3rd , with a .2620. Ted Heindselman’s .331 took small group. The Light Varmint Grand Aggregate honor went to Greg Walley with a .2314, followed by Ted Heindselman at .2349 and Steve Theye at .2368. Jack Neary won the Heavy Varmint Grand Aggregate with a aggregate of .2409. He was followed by Dominic Grunas at .2563 and Greg Walley at .2710. When all was said and done, the winner of the Two Gun Aggregate was Greg Walley with a .2512. Congratulations! Following Greg was Jack Neary at .2521 and Ted Heindselman at .2534. Kloeppel Wins Two-Gun at St Louis by Scott Pieper Mississippi Valley Regional October 19-20, 2013 Absentee? Yes, the Match Director failed to show for the Mississippi Valley Regional, but not for lacking a good cause. I was in Australia for the Word Bench Rest Competition, tagging along with the US team. The Club sent me down under to do some snooping to help prepare for the Word Championships coming here to St. Louis in 2015. So I really have no idea how the conditions were for this match. Based on the scores, it looks like it was challenging to say the least. Greg Gardner won the LV100 with a .2560” aggregate and Steve Turner shot the small group with a .097”. After the switch to HV, Jerry Kloeppel took the win for HV100 with a .2924” aggregate and Joe Fesi shot the small group with a 0.166”. We started Sunday off with the HV first, and Chuck Hearn won the 200 with a .2877” aggregate. Chuck Hearn also got the small group with a .223”. After the switch to LV class Chuck Hearn took charge and won the LV 200 aggregate with a .2832”. Chuck also pulled out the small group at .317”. Looks like Chuck was a hand full at 200 yards. Light Varmint Grand Aggregate winner was Chuck Hearn followed by Jerry Kloeppel in second and Jim Gardner rounding out the top three. Heavy Varmint Grand Aggregate winner was Jerry Kloeppel with Steve Turner in second and Bud Mundy third. The 2-Gun went to Jerry Kloeppel, with Jim Gardner 2nd, Chuck Hearn 3rd, Steve Turner 4th, and Bud Mundy 5th. Thanks again to all that came to St. Louis. It really is a pleasure running the matches for you all; just wish we could get a few more to show up to see what they are missing out on. We shot the first half of the Southwest Regional Championship was at the Ben Avery Shooting Range October 5-6, 2013. We had 23 shooters. It was one of the worst conditions that I have seen on that range since Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been shooting here. The wind gusts were between 40 and 60 mph and the wind switching, made for a very tough match. You could tell it was a tough shoot when the small group on the first 200 yard match was a 1.152 shot by Dana Andrus. The results follow. We would like to thank everyone for their continuing support. Gary Ocock Wins Visalia Invitational The Visalia Invitational is a two day unlimited five shot match which is the last match of the year for the Visalia Benchrest shooters. This match is held in October when the conditions are good and usually produce some very nice aggregates. This year the conditions were almost perfect for the twenty four shooters that attended the match. The temperature was cool and the winds were mild and sometimes the flags did not move. On day 1, the 100 yard match was won by Gary Ocock with a .1602 aggregate. Gary also won the small group trophy with a .066 screamer. George Lozano placed second with a .1832 aggregate. Dave Woodward shot a .1894 for third place. Moving out to 200 yards Gary Ocock got serious and put together a nice .1587 aggregate to win the first place trophy. The small group trophy was won by Mel Iwatsubo shooting a .144 screamer with a bag gun. A.1807 aggregate won the second place trophy for Dennis Thornbury, Lawrence Weisdorn placed third with a .1885 agg. After winning both the 100 and 200 yard matches, it’s no surprise who won the first place trophy for the grand. Gary Ocock ended day 1 with a .1594 grand aggregate for his win and also set a new range record. George Lozano shot a .2000 to win the second place trophy, in third place was David Woodward with a .2035, fourth place was taken by Dennis Thornbury’s .2042 and in fifth place with a .2131 was Lawrence Weisdorn. On day 2, I don’t know what Gary Ocock had for breakfast but it sure helped his shooting. Gary shot four screamers in a row and a one on his fifth target for a .1088 aggregate for the first place trophy and a new range record. Imagine shooting four screamers and not winning the small group trophy. The small group trophy went to Joe Stanovich with a .067 screamer. Joe also won the second place trophy with a .1374 aggregate. Chuck Miller shot five one’s to take the third place trophy with a .1464. One of the local shooters took over the 200 yard match, Marty Childers won the first place trophy shooting a .1649 aggregate. Marty also won the small group trophy with a .192 screamer. John Verhagen took the second place trophy

with a .1984 aggregate. Jim Nicolas shot a .2102 aggregate for the third place trophy. The Day 2 Grand Aggregate first place trophy was won by Gary Ocock. Gary shot another fine aggregate a .1620 for first place. Joe Stanovich placed second with a .1982, a .2030 took third place for Chuck Miller, Francis Lee was fourth with a .2048 and fifth place was won by Marty Childers shooting a ..2054. Gary Ocock had a great weekend of shooting, winning three out of the four yardages and both Grand aggregates. Gary Ocock won the two gun first place trophy with a great two day .1607 aggregate. George Lozano won the second place trophy with a .2048 aggregate, a .2080 aggregate by Dennis Thornbury took third place, Francis Lee shot a .2141 for forth place and in fifth place with a .2157 aggregate was Joe Stanovich. Nick Marino Wins at SWLA VFS by Wayne Bengston October 20th was our last VFS match for the year. We had a good turnout and the weather was great with mild winds from the south around 1 to 3 mph during the 100 yd match. Nine of the thirteen shooters stayed clean through the 100 yd match with Dale Metzer shooting a 250-21X to take 1st place, Rodney Landry a 250-19X to take 2nd and Mike Louwein taking 3rd with a 250 19X. During the 200 yd match in the afternoon the wind picked up a bit and became very switchy with a little mirage thrown in. Ray Perry and Larry Tilley tied the 200 yd match with scores of 249-4X. However, Ray won 1st place with the tie breaker pushing Larry to 2nd place and Nick Marino taking third with a 248 7X. With all scores added up for the Grand Ag. Nick Marino took first place with a 498-24X, Michael Louwein took 2nd with a 498-23X and Larry Tilley took 3rd with a 498-20X. Congratulations gentlemen, good shooting.
