They’re Back! Tomball’s 4-Gun 100

Tomball’s 4-Gun 100-yard competition was held February 22-23, 2014. Joe Duke starts out by saying a big thank you to Dwayne and Richard Pullum and all their crew for bringing registered matches back to the Tomball Gun Club. This is the first registered match in two years and it was sorely missed. This weekend of shooting the 4 by 100 format was a blast. Tomball is the junkyard dog of the ranges. It will and does extract its penalty from every shooter sooner or later. Joe said his knees will be sore for a week after wading thru the gravel for three days. There was a variety of conditions to overcome and some did it better than the rest of us. Tomball on a cool, still, almost foggy morning took its toll on most of us. It is hard to understand why the groups are so big when there are so little conditions. Joe managed to scratch out a yardage win and when

by the most popular guys in all of Texas, The Pullum Brothers

shooting against all the talent in the Gulf Coast region, he counts that as a very special accomplishment. Those guys (and Lady) never give anything. Zana Carter turned in a very special performance this weekend. She was the most consistent shooter all weekend long and took home an entire arm load of trophies. Way to go Zana! Joe credits his success this weekend to Ronnie Cheek’s fine shooting 6mm bullets. Dale Metzger shared a special thanks to the Pullum brothers for taking on the monumental task of being match directors. They did an exemplary job. Also thanks to John Jones, Gary Walters and all of the other Tomball Gun Club members who assisted in calling the match and scoring. Thanks to the target crew who, for a first time outing, did a great job. Special recognition to Zana Carter who was “ON

FIRE” this weekend. Excellent shooting, Zana! We started with 5 shot unlimited and finished with heavy varmint on Saturday. Sunday we shot the sporter in the morning and ended the weekend with the light varmint. Richard Pullum said they had a wonderful turn out with 38 shooters on Saturday and 39 on Sunday. Thanks to everybody that came out to shoot and a special thanks to everybody that helped get this thing going. As a reminder, this was only the first half of the 4-Gun. The 200 yard results contested April 5-6 will be printed in an upcoming issue. Congratulations to all the winners. Vendors of Benchrest Interest For gun enthusiasts, there are several annual shows that allow one to peruse the multitude of vendors with up and coming products that are of interest. One of the biggest is the SHOT Show. This last January, the Shot Show was held in Las Vegas and Rod Brown was present to visit with the many, many vendors. Following are some of the companies which offer interesting benchrest products and services. Take a look…

Gunright: Shooting for Accuracy Located in Gilbert, Arizona, this company is a father and son operation. They re-profile barrels and build it up with a titanium or aluminum spray to reduce barrel weight. Typical light

varmint barrels weigh around 5.2 lbs and this process shaves 30-40% off that weight. You could then get a barrel that weighs 3-4 lbs allowing more room for a heavier scope, action or stock.

Score High Gunsmithing Located in Albuquerque, NM. The company’s products are geared towards the benchrest crowd. They make an epoxy material for bedding and aluminum jigs you can use when you take a standard Remington rifle and this jig makes sure your holes are square. According to Rod, it is a very nice and clean professional process of bedding actions. Ballistol Located in Kitty Hawk, NC this com-

pany produces multi-purpose cleaning solutions. This is an old product dating back to the World War II era that is still popular today. Nathaniel G Lambreth, Sr Mr Lambreth developed a micrometer reamer adjustment device which he sells out of Pacific Tool & Gauge. You can adjust the depth the reamer cuts the chamber. In benchrest, where everyone wants their chambers to be the same, Nathaniel’s product makes it easy for a gunsmith to exactly hit chamber depth. www.customgunsandammunition.com.

Sportear This was one of many hearing protection companies represented. This

Gunzilla This is a cleaning chemical company. Their chemical formulation and demonstration looked very interesting. His product is comparable to Baristol.

BS Planet Technology Solutions Over the Top in high-end Long Range and Benchrest category rifles. Selling for upwards of $50,000 these rifles include one solid piece action and scope rings for the hardcore shooter with deep pockets.

SHOOT BETTER SHOOT BERGER

SCATT Sells laser training devices to help develop proficiency in accuracy. They attach a camera device to the rifle for Olympic style shooting. Normally this would be of zero interest to the benchrest crowd because it traces the movement of the gun. There is, however, the possibility to produce a training regimen to determine where you were holding when you fired. If, for example, you held off ¾ of a bullet and the shot landed, it may help in determining bad bench manners.

The Berger 6mm BR Column Target bullet uses the physics of dispersion mitigation to provide BR Berger offers a full line of match grade rifle shooters with a reliable option that offers the widest and lowest tune valley. This means the bullet bullets for varmint, target, hunting and tactical shoots best in the widest variety of loads and seating depths. In this case, overall balance of the applications. Ask your dealer if they stock Berger bullet is more important than overall weight, so there is no listed weight. Rather, Bullets or visit our website for full details. the 6mm BR Column bullet achieves a specific internal lead column height, resulting in minor weight differences from lot to lot.

Sellmark Not related to benchrest specifically but worth an honorable mention. This company sells Pulsar scopes which are digital scopes and have night vision for evening coyote hunting.

Oehler System 88 Oehler has a new product coming out that is a downrange chronograph. For the long range shooters, there is concern for high BC’s. To have a real number instead of a calculated number requires different inputs from math including time of flight. This product does just that. It measures flight time from muzzle to target. This is the important figure in figuring out your BC.

These bullets are being tested by top BR shooters, with great success. Lou Murdica has won matches in both Florida and California, Don Nielson won Two Gun Aggs three weekends in a row and Tony Boyer shot a 200 yard HV Agg of .1928 at the 2012 East/West match in Missouri.

JGS Precision Tool Manufacturing Their primary business is making chamber reamers. They are in the same business as Pacific Tool & Gauge, Clymer and Dave Manson. JGS is out of Coos Bay, Oregon.

company makes custom molded hearing protection that is specifically designed for the sportsman and provides hearing enhancement. This product is used as a “binocular for your ears”. The process incorporates a custom mold with a hearing aid built into it which blocks loud noises but allows normal conversation to be heard. This would be great for the benchrest crowd as it would allow a shooter to wear hearing protection throughout a match without having to remove them between match conversations with fellow shooters or to hear range commands. This is an active earplug. Good solutions cost good money and the price was around $900 for a set.

Nightforce Their newest product is a competition scope that benchrest shooters may want to consider. They are introducing a 15-55 x 52 competition scope. The heavy weight of the Nightforce scopes has keep them from the shortrange crowd but with the introduction of this new scope with a feather weight around 28 ounces, things are positioned to change. This new scope competes directly with Leupold and March completion scopes currently among the standard in short range benchrest.

Arizona Benchrest Cactus Warm-Up

For this February Cactus warm up match, there were 40 shooters participating on Saturday and 37 on Sunday; everyone trying to get tuned up for the big event. The weekend was cool in the morning with very light wind to start. You know its going to be a fairly nice day when you drive into the range and see the hot air balloons in the sky. (Not from the shooters). Jim Gardner was shooting with the rest of us but his secret was having his wife set his flags, clean his brass, and load for him. He tried to get her to clean his rifle but she couldn’t get the brush through it without standing on the bench to get enough leverage. In the HV200, I almost caught Jim. He didn’t know that I had his wife come over and help with my loading! On the HV Grand, Jim said he would have done much better but his wife took off to go shopping. Bob Brackney said he would have done much better if he was not distracted talking to Dan Sutton’s wife trying to get her to let Dan put custom exhaust on his new truck. Keith said he would have done much better but he was too busy watching the hot air balloons. I say I would have done much better but was too busy having an argument with some of the voices in my head on which one was going to get lunch. Located 15 miles from Holton, these restored Queen Ann homes were built in the late 1880’s and were once the home to two of Muskegon’s most prominent lumber barons. Featuring intricate wood carvings, stained glass, stenciled walls and ceilings, some original furniture and family possessions. This site is featured on the National Register and is sponsored by the Muskegon County Museum.

Scolnik House

A Historic House of the Depression Era. The house is a site of the Muskegon County Museum and will tell the story of common families living during the Great Depression. In fall 1929, stocks fell 75%, income fell 40% and a quarter of the workforce was unemployed. A fictional Polish Catholic family owns the two story home which was built in the late 1880s in classic Queen Anne-Inspired Folk Victorian style. The family includes a couple, their five children and the paternal grandmother. They initially lived on both floors of the home, but because of the depression, now only occupy the main floor. The second floor is now an apartment to a young fictional PolishJewish couple, their two children and the wife’s brother. They immigrated to the United States before the Holocaust. The Scolnik House is open for public tours Wednesday through Sunday 12pm - 4pm from May to October. No admission fee.

Lake Effect Winery

Lake Effect Winery is located on Michigan’s west coast in the beautiful, lakefront Muskegon County. The winery uses premium Michigan fruits and berries to produce delicious wines, boasting unique flavors. The wines include: Apple, Blueberry, Elderberry, Cherry, Black Currant, Pear, Aronia, Marion Berry and Elderblue.

White River Light Station

A vintage 1875 lighthouse now used as a museum which offers the opportunity to see what life used to be like around the great lakes. It features photos, paintings, artifacts, and newspaper articles about the lighthouse, shipping, and lumbering.

Country Dairy, Inc

Take a tour of the processing plant and show barn in order to see where it all begins. Country Dairy is a fourth generation family farm and has been bottling their own milk free of rBST (bovine growth hormone) for over 20 years. Country Dairy also makes rBST free cheese, butter, and premium ice cream. Country Dairy has a farm store and deli hosting a bottomless cup of their own fresh milk. At the deli, guests can enjoy cold and hot sandwiches, wraps, grilled panini sandwiches and hoagies. Afterward they can top off their meal with a selection from the dairy’s various specialty sundaes or choose from their 17 flavors of ice cream made right here on the farm. Straighter Brass Makes Straighter Ammo by Boyd Allen

Improving The Process Someone told me that Ferris Pindell said that unless things are in perfect alignment, you are better off letting them float a little, or words to that effect. Without getting to the issue of how straight is straight enough, this article is about how to make straighter brass with the equipment that you already own, by using a better die setup technique, and modifying your press and shell holder. A couple of weeks back, a friend, Don Forbes, who has a lot of race engine building experience, builds his own rifles, and has a lathe, mill and boundless energy and curiosity, took an interest in the alignment of his Rock Chuckers’ (2) ram to die thread alignment. What he learned, and the bit that I added to it, more than halved the runout of my FL sized PPC brass. This all began with an after lunch bull session at a local (Selma, CA) carniceria that serves huge, tasty, chili verde burritos. During the wide ranging discussion of possible things to try to improve our

results, I told him of an idea that became the basis for a successful investigation and equipment modification. Of course without his skill and equipment, my idea would have remained unproven theory. As it turned out, it worked very well. By careful examination of brass that he had raised into contact with a die (minus bushing) lowering the ram and seeing if there was room to push the case to either side, and to the rear, Don determined that the case had no room to move to one side and to the rear, a possible indication that it was being held off center from the die. It turned out that it was a combination of the shell holder and the length of the slot in the ram that needed fixing. First the shell holder. It had been my idea to allow it to float a little by reducing the diameters of the bottom flange and the necked down part between it and the upper flange. Using his lathe, he did that and then discovered that there was still an issue getting the shell holder far enough to the rear in the

face of the ram, so he chucked up the ram and opened up the back of the slot in a circle, that was centered in the ram and slightly larger in diameter than its original width, creating more clearance to the rear and sides while leaving the front of the slot as it had been manufactured. This combination gave him float all around, and when combined with first touching the case to the die and then retracting it slightly, to center the shell holder and case on the die before sizing the case, was able to achieve much better sized case concentricity. Since I happen to have an extra RCBS # 32 shell holder (My investigation would be with 6PPC cases.), I asked him to do to it what he had done to his and take .015 off of the top as well. The next time that I saw him, he handed me the shell holder, with the middle and bottom diameters reduced, and the top cut down as I requested. Sometime later, I had a chance to test the results of the modifications, comparing them to those from a

14

Precision Rifleman

shell holder that had only had its height reduced. For the test, I used a Harrell turret press, and a RCBS Gold Medal (bushing) FL die, that I had come by as part of a writing assignment. At first I inserted the fully modified shell holder in the top of the press’s ram to see if it could be moved. It could not, and after some thought, it came to me that it was being held further off center because of the reduced diameters, which was not what I was looking for, so I improvised. I removed the shell holder retainer. Then it could float as intended, and with the ram fully retracted the press frame prevented the shell holder from falling out. So far so good. Then I began to do my comparison of the results from that shell holder and one with stock diameters. The results with the modified one were better, but not as good as I had hoped for, or as good as my friend had reported. The good news is that I managed to figure out why, and come up with a fix. It seems that the threads of the RCBS die were slightly smaller than those of the Harrell’s die that I normally use, which were about as tight a fit as would be workable in the minimum sized threads of the turret. The RCBS die had significant float within those threads, which could result in its being locked down slightly off center, and/or cocked. Fortunately, this was not my first encounter with this sort of a problem. I had a plan. Holding the die so that it could not turn, I raised the lock ring, leaving a gap between it and the press turret and tightened the set screw, securing its position on the die. Then I secured the die from turning with strips of Gorilla tape down the sides of the die body, across the top and edge of the lock ring, bridging the gap, and down the sides of the two hole turret, so that the die could float but not turn in the press’s threads. I used two half inch wide strips across from each other, and tested the result. It worked. My final step was to size a couple of cases. This gave me end of neck runout of a half thousandth, or

less, about twice as good as it had been after all of the previous work. (For all of my runout measurements I used an old Sinclair concentricity gauge that supports the case body on four bearing balls.) Not wanting to settle for pieces of tape, it seemed to me that if I screwed down the trued (another story) lock ring to the top of the press turret, with a case that was in the process of being sized in place, that this would hold the die centered, and let me do away with the ugly and fragile tape connection. It was not to be. Even though I did my best to be careful while tightening the lock ring, the runout was increased, significantly, so I returned to the previous configuration, with the tape and the space, and resolved to work on a more elegant solution, while continuing to use what works the best. So there you have it. I can size cases with a factory die, in a turret press, so that they have no more than a half of a thousandth runout at the ends of their necks (measured on an old Sinclair concentricity gauge that uses four bearing balls to support the case). Of course if you are already getting results that are this good or better, this has been a complete waste of your time, and I should be reading your article;-) My apologies to those of you who cannot deal with functional ugly, but for me, for this kind of situation, how a thing works takes precedence over how it looks.

Desert Sportsman Varmint For Score by Keith Myers

Las Vegas, Nevada 3/1/2014 Even with gusty winds and rain in the forecast, shooters came in from the surrounding states to see who will prevail for the start of the 2014 VFS season. Thankfully, the rain did not show up. With the prevailing wind in our faces all day, rain would have soaked us and our precious rigs. We started at 100 yards with nice steady wind and no mirage. By the time the first match had begun at 200 yards, the winds picked up and started blowing a few flags over and some targets from their frames. Here are the results. 100 Yards Keith Myers..................... 250-18X Tom Debacco................... 250-14X Scott Smith...................... 250-9X Howard Bloom.................. 249-15X Tony Debacco.................... 249-8X 200 Yards Tom Debacco....................248-1X Tom Guisewhite................. 243-3X Pete Savage...................... 242-4X Keith Myers...................... 242-3X Randy Burgess................... 242-0X 100/200 Aggregate Tom Debacco................... 498-15X Keith Myers..................... 492-21X Randy Burgess................... 490-9X Howard Bloom.................. 489-18X Tom Guisewhite................ 488-11X

Visalia’s Cactus Warm-Up

Written by Bill Mellor The first match of the year for Visalia was almost canceled when Dennis Thornbury called the range and said he was sick in bed and could not even get to the range. They held a meeting and Dan Lutke, Don Nielson and Scott Hamilton volunteered to run the match. The weather was cool and overcast both days and the 36 shooters attending did some great shooting. The Winner of LV100 was Robert Doi with a .1838 aggregate. Jack Childers was not far behind with a .1864 for second place. Steve Epstein shot his first screamer, a .060 for the small group trophy. Art Kawai won the LV200 shooting a .2439 aggregate. Norm Jeffery took second with a .2464. Norm also won the small group trophy with a .128 screamer. The LV Grand winner is a newcomer to Visalia, Bob Hammack shot a nice .2274 aggregate for the win. Norm Jeffery took second with a .2302 aggregate. Keith Cottrell placed third with a .2369, In Fourth place shooting a .2420 was Steve Epstein and George Lozano placed fifth with a .2478. It didn’t take Bob Hammack long to figure out the conditions at Visalia. He won the HV100 with a .1748 aggregate. Taking second with a .1786 aggregate was George Lozano. The small group trophy was presented to Everet Smith who shot a .043 screamer. The HV200 went to George Lozano shooting a fine .1971 aggregate. Jim Nicolas placed second with a .2229 and Jim also won the small group award with tiny .134 group. The HV Grand was awarded to George Lozano shooting a

.1878 aggregate. Jim Nicolas won second with .2153, and placing third with a .2207 aggregate was Walt Berger. Francis Lee shot a .2226 aggregate for fourth and fifth place went to Norm Jeffery with a 2282. George Lozano won the Two Gun first place trophy with a .2178 aggregate. George had the pleasure of sharing the moment with his son David whom he had brought to the match and competed in his first Benchrest match. Coming in second place with a .2292 aggregate was Norm Jeffery, Bob Hammack shot a .2358 for third place, placing fourth was Tom Libby with a .2426 and in fifth place was Larry White shooting a .2450. A big thank you goes to Dan Lutke, Don Nielson and Scott Hamilton for stepping up and taking over for Dennis Thornbury. On a sad note, Scott Hamilton’s father and our range master for many years, Bob Hamilton passed away recently. He will be missed. George said David enjoyed the weekend and got a feel for how challenging this sport can be. He also sent a big thank you to Dan Lutke who provided him with much encouragement and support. Take a closer look at the names listed and consider who George was shooting against. Norm Jeffery is a benchrest winning stalwart, Tom Libby just returned from WBC-12, Keith Cottrell is a World Record holder, Walt Berger is a benchrest icon, Dan Lutke is two-time shooter of the year in Sacramento, Lou Murdica is the reigning VFS Champion,

Don Nielson’s long range legacy has never been equalled and that’s just to name some. Regardless of all the titles and qualifications, it’s always one shooter against another on even footing and anyone’s game. A heartfelt congratulations to George. The win couldn’t go to a nicer guy. Sloughhouse Long Range Benchrest

The following are results from the February 23rd 600-yard long range benchrest match at Sacramento. Weekend weather was sunny, warm and dry. The morning started with temperatures in the low 40s with clear skies. and the afternoon warmed to the low 70s. If you are going to travel to Sacramento, there is no better time than the spring. Just remember to get here early enough in the season to avoid our “unseasonably hot summers. As the results show, many shooters showed up to get some last-minute practice before testing their skills at the upcoming Long Range Nationals. St Louis Benchrest: Joe Hemkens Wins Hunter

WOW, what a rough day for a match! We had a headwind that varied from head on often but also switched to a crosswind at times from the start of the match until the end. The weatherman said it was a 23-27mph wind and the competitors thought it may have been a little more than that. The weather kept many shooters away as they cancelled out the day before. Mixed in with this wind was snow, and snow in the face made it difficult to see, since the temperature was in the 30’s. We had 3 Hunter shooters and 5 in the VFS class. At 100 yards we had no 250’s and no one even shot a 50 at 200 yards! At 100 yards the winning score of 249-10X was shot by Jim Hart, second was Wayne Corley with 249-9X and 3rd was Dennis Boyet 246-10X. At 200 yards the winner was Wayne Corley with 231-1X, second was Jerry Kloeppel with 231 and 3rd was Jim Hart with 229-2X. In the VFS grand the scores were first Wayne Corley with 480-10X, second was Jim Hart with 478-12X and third was Jerry Kloeppel with 475-10X. In the Hunter class the 100 yard winner was Joe Hemkens with 246-7X, second place went to Clark Greene with 244-5X and third was Chuck Hearn with 236-5X. At 200 yards Joe Hemkens was again the winner with 238-2X and second was Clark Greene with 225-1X. In the Grand, the winner was Joe Hemkens with 484-9X and Clark Greene was second with 469=6X. for the base of the case. Also allows the operator to keep both hands on the power screw driver or drill. This makes it very easy to control feed rate of the cutting operation, generating a very fine turned finish. Larry Pertrey has passed away after a long battle with cancer. Larry was a long time benchrest shooter at Minnetonka Game & Fish Club, where he was a match director for many years and was always the first to help out with anything needing to be done. Larry didn’t travel to the big matches so many members may not know him. He was, however, a mainstay at Minnetonka. Larry just loved to be on the range on Friday before the match to do some shooting and hang out with the guys. Please keep Larry’s family in your prayers at this time of loss. Thank you to Jerry Lahr for keeping NBRSA members informed. Our condolences to the Pertrey family.

A Very Special Letter

I received the following letter shortly after the completion of the Berger Cactus Classic which will be featured in next month’s issue along with the Shamrock. Because of the contents of this letter, I just couldn’t wait to publish it. I double-dog dare you not to smile while you read it. Continue reading and see why...

Dear Audrey Brown, I was at my first benchrest Cactus Classic. It was a blast. I loved it. It was so fun and exciting. I had lots of fun with my friends and my dad, Thomas J DeBacco and I made tons of new friends. So many people have been nice and generous and very helpful and those people are Bud Mundy. He is my pal and he is very encouraging to me and he tells me to never give up and he gives me lots of bullets. Larry Lesser because he is very kind to me and he acts like I am family to him and he gave lots of supplies. Ed Maxwell and Thomas Maxwell I really appreciate them and all the work they do for the sport. Ed gives me lots of tips and he is kind to me and Thomas is very generous and he works hard on scores. I really appreciate it. George Lozano has been nice to me and he has taught me about good sportsmanship. Marty and Jack Childers they have given me confidence and they helped me stay calm if I shot a really small group and they helped me win my first ever group match and I thank you. Lawrence Weisdorn he taught me on how you can always try your best

and never give up. Charles Huckeba he is nice and he always wants others to shoot good. Lou Murdica has been really nice and generous because Lou gave me a gator bag and he has gave me good sportsmanship. Lester Bruno has taught me on how to handle the gun and also he has show me good bench manners. Randy Burgess has been like a third grandfather to me and he has been a real good friend to me. These are other people I would like to thank. Dan Suton, Bob Brackney, Walt Berger, Tom Guisewhite, Mike Sosenko, Keith Myers, Howey Bloom, Henry Pinkney, Keith Cottrell and many others. I appreciate all of what they did for me and the only think I can say is thank you. Tony DeBacco Glendale, Arizona 12 years NBRSA member
